ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018

MAY YOU GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH Over our years at JFS, we have seen people sign off on thank you notes, emails and in speeches, using the saying above. It’s a message that empowers you to do better……do more……grow. STRENGTH is a message that is clear to us. It is who we are at JFS, and who we serve. We see strength in our clients as they walk through our doors. We see strength in our staff, who work to improve the lives of our clients so they can become healthier and self-sufficient. We see strength in our volunteers who donate their time, talents and energy. We see strength in YOU - our donors and champions for those we serve. Your individual gifts are the agency’s largest source of support annually. We thank you for answering our requests for assistance to help those in need this past year. For the client who found the perfect job in construction, but couldn’t afford the required steel toe boots to start working, a donor saw the need and started an “Empowerment Fund” for our Career & Financial Services program. This fund serves to help others facing similar, short term work-related financial crises. For the client who struggled with addiction. A donor made the JFS Addiction Management program a reality by funding a full-time licensed Addictions Specialist to work with at-risk youth. For the client in the Food Pantry, who couldn't afford basic needs like fresh produce, toilet paper or diapers. Many donors saw the need and are making an impact with monthly donations of these items. A small group of Food Pantry ambassadors saw the need for support in picking up donated food where we now have a refrigerated truck and a driver to provide even more healthy food to our clients. For our clients whose lives have been touched by your generosity, thank you. YOU strengthened our organization this year. With your help, JFS served over 13,000 individuals in this past year alone. Thank YOU for your support as we continue to do better, do more, and grow for our community. Sincerely,

Cathy Barker Interim Chief Executive Officer

Michael Kaufman Board President

In-School Services Children in the Dallas Jewish Day Schools continue to receive personalized in-school services and assessments to meet their unique needs and challenges. Our staff also provide advocacy, strategic guidance and professional support to parents, teachers and school officials that facilitate the student’s success at school, at home and in the community. Located primarily in the schools, our School Intervention Specialists meet weekly with student and/or faculty and parents, and offer services including social skills groups and groups that address bullying. The School Intervention Specialists also provide education and training to school faculty, staff and parents with workshop topics ranging from “Helping Children to Deal with Hate” to “Grief Support for Yourself, Your Children and Family.”

Premier Resource for Autism Testing According to recent studies, approximately 1 in 59 children in the U.S. is identified with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). JFS is the only center in DFW that completes evaluations for families with Medicaid, which has allowed us to become the largest resource for autism evaluations. In fact, families travel from all over the region and spend the night to get an appointment with our staff. Within the last 12 months, JFS has received over 300 referrals for autism testing, with the number of referrals steadily increasing. With generous funding from the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, we were able to hire a full time PhD Diagnostic Specialist to provide testing for those with special needs, with a specialized focus on testing children who might fall on the autism spectrum. The JFS Autism team not only provides testing, but also connects families to additional services recommended for children identified with autism, such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, school based intervention services, and parent/teacher support in working with the child.

Men's Group In group therapy, 6-10 people meet face-to-face with a professionally-trained therapist to explore and discuss their struggles and concerns in a safe and confidential space. The power of a process group lies with the unique opportunity to both provide and receive feedback, support, and validation from multiple perspectives in a collaborative environment. This group focuses on increasing awareness into how our internal processes contribute to our difficulties and influence our relationships, behaviors, and choices. As awareness increases, group members learn to confront difficult emotional experiences, better address their internal and external needs, and develop a new sense of selfconfidence, stability, and well-being. In our Men's Group members are welcome to bring any issues to the group that they feel are important and impactful. Some of the issues that are addressed include: interpersonal relationships, family conflict & violence, parenting, depression & anxiety, managing anger, exploring & understanding abusive experiences, and living a life of integrity.

Support for Those with Loved Ones Struggling with Addiction Jewish Family Service provides a 6-week support group for those who want to understand and help family and friends with the disease of addiction. Watching a loved one struggle with substance abuse and dependency is difficult. Often, shame and guilt are a part of the experience and family and friends don’t have the knowledge or the understanding of how to help. Our group provides education about the disease, resources for helping others and a safe environment to share feelings and experience.

ADU LTS Dialectical Behavior Therapy Group Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment shown to be effective in teaching and refining an individual’s skills in changing behavioral, emotional and thinking patterns associated with problems in living that cause misery and distress. The goal of learning the DBT skills is to create a life worth living.

603 ADULTS & TEENS SERVED

The skills are taught in modules that include mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and middle path. The group members are of mixed age, gender and diagnosis. Group members must be in concurrent individual therapy while attending the group. The DBT group has just begun its second year at JFS. Some members have shown quantitative reductions in depression, emotional dysregulation and behavior dysfunction based on measures given before and after six months of group attendance. 6

PLAN Clubhouse At the PLAN Clubhouse, members and staff work together to operate all aspects of the facility. Clubhouse International, the accrediting organization for Clubhouses across the world, issued a set of 37 time-tested standards for Clubhouses to follow. These include operating according to a Work-Ordered Day with “Work Units” for members that involve voluntarily participating in daily tasks (including meal preparation), unit meetings, outreach, attendance tracking, and event planning. Participation in such activities provides excellent opportunities for development of job

PLAN OF NORTH TEXAS What We Do The mission of PLAN is to provide professional, effective and affordable mental health and social services that promote lifelong self-sufficiency, selfworth and well-being, specifically within a supportive community for adults with persistent mental illness. PLAN services include: Psychotherapy/crisis counseling and case management, PLANIt 4Ward©, PLAN’s proprietary adult psychosocial skills program, education and socialization with over 80 activities each month, and PLAN Clubhouse, which operates according to a proven rehabilitation model based on a “work-ordered day” for treating mental illness.

skills. Offering Transitional Employment opportunities with community business partners is also a key component of the Clubhouse model. Individuals, who have been isolated for years, or have a lack self-confidence, begin to see themselves as having productive roles in society as they participate. After much review of effective models, PLAN of North Texas is pending approval to be the first accredited clubhouse in this area. The Clubhouse model has over 70 years of history; evidence-based and proven to be transformative, with an emphasis on reintegration into the workplace and as a place to establish significant relationships. The Clubhouse philosophy is that meaningful work is part of

the healing process, and that voluntary structure, routine and responsibility are stabilizing and improve the ability to manage

oneself

independently. With over 53,000

individuals living with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and/or major depression, the need for this service in Dallas is great (“Texas State of Mind”, Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute for Texas, 2016). The PLAN Clubhouse, affectionately known as “PLAN @ 1121 Rock” is offically open at 1121 Rockingham Dr., Richardson, TX 75080.

PLAN-It-4Ward© PLAN-It-4Ward is a dynamic combination of group sessions and computer activities designed to help adults improve social skills, neuro-processing, and social stamina. It is a series comprised of four modules addressing and enhancing cognitive flexibility, emotional resilience, problem solving and cognitive skills. Participants are given access to a premier online cognitive traning program called NeuroPyschOnline (NPO) Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy System, a division of psychological software services developed by Dr. Odie Bracy. The tracks address cognitive skills including attention, memory, visuospatial, problem solving, and communication skills.

FAMILY VIOLENCE INTERVENTION Housing First Domestic violence is one of the leading causes for homelessness in North Texas, but there are numerous barriers for victims to access the services needed for a path to self-sufficiency. To address the need for transitional housing for victims of crime in both Dallas and Collin Counties, JFS has expanded existing agency services to include a bestpractice “Housing First” Transitional Housing Program. The program is expected to serve at least 20 families a year. The program provides free, furnished housing, childcare, utilities, and a phone for adults (primarily women) who are in an abusive relationship or have a history of being physically, emotionally, and/or sexually abused, families with children with similar experiences and/ or have witnessed abusive situations in the household, or victims of a crime that warrants a move to another location. Housing is available for up to 18 months for clients willing to participate in transitional housing, create an individualized safety plan with staff assistance and possess the ability to safely live independently without 24/7 staff support. Apartments are furnished utilizing The Resale Shop, JFS’ thrift store, as well as supplementing needs from community partners like the Dallas Furniture Bank and other corporate partners. With stable housing and access to our continuum of professional wrap around services, victims can develop strategies and the emotional health necessary to stop current victimization, create safety in their lives, gain a sense of control, heal from the trauma and/or violence, break the cycle of abuse, and leave the situation in order to become emotionally and physically self-sufficient.

OLDER ADULTS Annette's Story Annette and her sister Elaine, both in their 80s, moved into a condominium together after Annette's husband passed away. They were happy to be together after spending many years in different states. Elaine, with the help of her adult children, packed up Annette & her late husband's belongings - sifting between "keep" and "give away" piles.

The JFS Community Chaplain, visited Annette while she was in the hospital, giving her the comfort she needed to continue to heal emotionally and physically.

By the time Annette was discharged from the hospital, their families had safely moved everything to Elaine and Annette's new condominium, but nothing was unpacked. The floor was littered with moving boxes and plastic wrapped furnture. Even weeks after JFS Volunteers her ribs and joined them collarbone had for three days healed, Annette to bring items knew she was down from not 'out of the "AFTER MY FALL, their attic, sort woods' yet. Growing Needs We saw a 25% increase in the total number of clients served since last year. This, of course, creates a greater need with regards to space, food sourcing, and volunteers. To continue to meet these increased needs, the Food Pantry team added a part-time truck driver to assist with transportation and pick ups of food from our partners. Over the summer, JFS supporters successfully purchased a refrigerated truck which will give us the ability to secure more corporate & inkind donations, and, in turn, continue to feed the growing number of families we serve. The Food Pantry now receives deliveries from our partners, like North Texas Food Bank, on Mondays and Wednesdays. Clients are able to attend the Food Pantry and access case management services on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. In total, volunteers served 10,911 hours in the Food Pantry, helping to ensure our clients receive what they need.

“Food Pantry Experience” Community Engagement Program This program involves learning the value of a dollar and simulates living at the poverty line. The program was reworked this year to include a family scenario and budget exercise to better immerse the participants in their learning experience. It includes shopping at the Walmart across the street from JFS with a budget of $5 charity for each student, having a discussion about hunger & health, and what food can be bought with the limited “income.” The simulation experience can either be finished by restocking the shelves in the JFS Food Pantry with purchases made across the street or by simulating a normal shopping day in the Food Pantry as if they were a client receiving services.

Weekly Orientations JFS Dallas has resources available for all educational backgrounds and employment statuses including, but not limited to, individuals with learning differences and behavioral challenges, criminal records, a history of multiple short-term jobs and layoffs, and long periods of unemployment. Our longstanding Career and Employment Services program has been re-developed and rebranded as Career and Financial Services (CFS). Clients participating in the CFS program start by attending a two-hour orientation session with Employment and Financial Coaches. This orientation session is offered once a week, and serves as

an introduction to the continuum of services JFS offers, focused primarily on detailed information about diverse offerings within CFS.

a foundation for participation in weekly support groups, workshops and computer literacy training classes.

During the orientation, comprehensive intake information is collected, including credit assessment, job and salary history and other variables that could serve as barriers to success. Financial coaching is addressed to allow clients to get comfortable discussing their finances as a part of the program.

Orientation workshops are focused on resume development, budgeting and salary needs, understanding credit reports, interview skills, understanding available resources, and change management. Upon completing the orientation workshops, clients are presented with the opportunity to schedule their oneon-one employment and financial coaching sessions, join networking groups, and sign up for computer literacy training classes.

These workshops seek to present information to better prepare the clients for a one-on-one setting with their employment and Financial Coaches and to provide

FAREWELL The end of the 2017-2018 year of JFS saw not only a year end, but the end of the tenure of Steve Banta as Chief Executive Officer of the agency. Steve served Jewish Family Service during a transition period, with his stated vision being “to move the agency forward and put it on a solid footing to meet the growing needs of the community.” Steve’s love of the JFS mission was evident in all that he did, and his devotion to this work was never in doubt. The Board of Directors of JFS wishes Steve and his family well in all that they do. As noted above in this report, may they go from strength to strength.

JFS FOUNDATION Understanding the benefits to Gifts of Stock & Appreciated Assets A gift of appreciated securities is for you: 1. If you want to hold stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares that have increased in value. 2. If you want to make a gift that doesn't affect your liquidity or cash flow. Established in 2012, the JFS Foundation supports the long-term viability of the mental health and social services of Jewish Family Service through planned giving and endowments. It allows thoughtful, generous donors to make a lasting impact in our community for generations.

Ways to Give You can make a tax-deductible gift at any time to the JFS Foundation to an established fund or to the general unrestricted fund. Gifts from your Will or Trust Preserve your assets during your lifetime by planning a gift that costs nothing to you now, but can make a world of difference to JFS and the community over time. Gifts from a Retirement Plan Leave more of your estate to your heirs and name JFS as beneficiary to your retirement plan, freeing up other assets to pass on. Gifts of Stock and Appreciated Assets Avoid capital gains tax by buying low and giving high. Take advantage of appreciated securities, rather than cash, to make your gift to the JFS Foundation. Gifts of Life Insurance Create a long-term gift that won’t draw funds from your estate. Originate a new life insurance policy or donate a paid-up policy of coverage you no longer need. 27

3. If you want to make an outright gift, or fund a gift that will first return lifetime payments to you and/or another beneficiary. 4. If you want to diversify your assets to increase your income without having to pay the capital gains taxes that would result from a sale.

How It Works

Benefits

· You transfer appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares you have owned for more than one year to the JFS Foundation.

· You receive an immediate income tax deduction for the fair market value of the securities on the date of transfer, even if you originally paid much less.

· The JFS Foundation sells your securities and uses the proceeds for an endowment.

· You pay no capital gains tax on the transfer when the stock is sold.

A $10,000 cash gift and a gift of $10,000 in appreciated securities both generate the same charitable deduction. HOWEVER, if you use publicly traded stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares that you have held for a year or more for a gift, you will receive an additional tax benefit: The IRS allows you to make your transfer to the JFS Foundation without recognizing capital gains on the appreciation. You can, thus, leverage a larger donation than you could make with cash, and receive a larger tax benefit, by "buying low and giving high." Your gift of stock is valued, for tax purposes, at the mean of the high and low on the date the shares are received in our account. Mutual funds are valued at the "net asset value." If you and your advisors are transferring assets at the end of the year, it is especially important to note the following: We encourage you not to sell the stock first as even though you may give us the proceeds as a gift, the IRS will impose capital gains tax on your sale, wiping out the benefits of this arrangement. For more information, contact Cathy Barker, Interim CEO, at 469.506.1645 or cbarker@jfsdallas.org
