On behalf of Jersey Australia, I extend my sincere thanks to everyone whose help and assistance have been valuable and instrumental in bringing the 2025 World Jersey Conference together. From the largest to the smallest contribution, we couldn’t have made this event what is without you. Special thanks to Deanne and John and the team at Jaydee Events. Your professionalism is second to none!
DataGene recently release the annual stats update which shows a significant increase in the Jersey population in the Australian national herds to nearly 18%.
This is an increase of just over 2% for the past year and up from 11% a decade ago. This increase reflects the high standard of Australian Jersey that you have bred and continue to breed to meet the Australian and global market as a high quality fit for purpose dairy cow for now and the future.
Congratulations to our breeders for setting the standards high.

The Jersey Australia 2025 Annual General Meeting will be held on July 2nd 2025, and we encourage members to start thinking about applying to join the Board of Jersey Australia.
Nominations will open in early May, and we will be distributing nomination forms straight after the World Conference.
If joining the Board interests you, please reach to one of the current Board members to find out more about the role of a director.
The dairy community has lost one of its finest with the passing of Matthew Templeton - a passionate breeder, respected judge, and great mate to many.
Matthew, along with his wife Nicola, daughters Geri and Harlie, and parents Bruce and Jan, ran View Fort Holsteins & Jerseys in Victoria. With 350 cows in production and over 600 head on the farm, their focus on strong maternal lines and high-type genetics built a herd admired both in Australia and overseas.
In 2024, the Templetons took an exciting step forward, expanding their operation with the purchase of a new farm - just one of many signs of Matthew’s drive for growth and excellence. Before settling into life on his own farm, he made a name for himself as a professional cattle fitter, working across Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, Brazil, and Germany. Along the way, he prepped some of the world’s most elite show cows, including Supreme Champions at World Dairy Expo.
His love for showing never faded, with his own herd producing five Supreme Champions at IDW. As a judge, Matthew reached incredible heights, making history in August 2024 as the first Australian to officiate at the Wisconsin Championship Show for both Holsteins and Jerseys. He also judged at World Dairy Expo, the Ontario Summer Show, and countless Royal Shows across Australia and New Zealand, as well as the All-Australian Photographic Competition and Australia-wide On Farm Competitions.
Matthew was more than just a top breeder and judge - he was a true cattleman, a mentor, and a friend to so many in our industry. His knowledge, passion, and presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the cattle, the people, and the memories he leaves behind.
Our thoughts are with his family and all those who were lucky enough to know him.
Jersey Australia will be implementing a revised classification visit schedule across 2025 with a monthly service being operated.
We plan to have a weeklong class service in a designated region each month to provide a more regular class visit service opportunity particularly in larger service areas.
The revised service will also support and work with our classifier availabilities. Our traditional periods of classification in November is a very difficult time to get classifiers off farm for an extended period making scheduling more and more difficult. We are also seeing requirements with several bookings now over 200 cows per visit. More regular opportunities to classify would held reduce the impact on cows and farms in these larger herds from a single days class as we now do it. Keep an eye out for the new schedule.
DataGene has recently release the discussion paper for review and input on the National Breeding Objective.
Key Changes proposed for the BPI are as follow
• Increase weighting on Fat and Protein with far more emphasis on fat in line with fore cast milk pricing.
Increased weighting on Daughter Fertility and Survival
• Increased weighting on Overall Type and Mammary
• Increased weighting on Mastitis Resistance and Somatic Cell Count
• Reduced weightings on temperament
Through the National Breeding Objective process, we also expect to see the Base roll which will roll back the genetic gain made since the last roll. For Jerseys, we should expect to see Milk ABV’s drop by 212 litres, Fat ABV 9.2kg, Protein ABV by 8.6kg & the Daughter Fertility ABV will stay the same indicating there has been no genetic gain in Jerseys for daughter fertility in the last decade.
Members are encouraged to engage in discussions where they can or reach to any of the Genetics and Breed Development Committee or myself to discuss your thoughts.
The Board has reviewed the Community Grants Funds and has made the decision to reduce the total funds available each year to $8,000.00 per annum.
The decision made by the Board reflects a tightening budget into the coming year and the lack of utilisation of the fund since its inception with less than 50% of the funds available being used by members.
Dear Member,
The Board of Jersey Australia is reviewing the longterm feasibility of Jersey Australia to function and deliver services to members in a standalone capacity as we currently do. The Board has agreed that Jersey Australia should investigate working with other dairy breed associations to gauge interest in working together in some areas or combining Associations.
The Jersey Australia Board does not have a firm position on whether we should work together on specific areas and services or combine associations. It is however becoming more challenging to offer the level of service we have as the number of large, registered herds decline in line the dairy farm number across Australia. The Board is looking to enter discussions with an open mind.
If members have views on what would be the best way forward, please contact myself or a fellow Jersey Australia director. There does seem to be support across the breed associations currently to investigate the options.
Jersey Australia is currently working with other breed associations sharing staff and resources with classification.
If you have any feedback, please contact me or one of the other Jersey Australia Board Directors.
Yours sincerely,
Geoff Akers President 0427

When Lyn Parish’s Dornoch Jerseys first appeared on the BPI lists, it was at the lowly ranking of 278 out of about 320 Jersey herds.
Barely a decade later, they’ve peaked at number five on the latest list and Lyn believes she can go even higher.
Visitors to the Parish family’s Winchelsea farm nestled against the Otway National Park will see a herd that is constantly on the improve, even though the season has been far from kind.
In the December BPIs release, Dornoch achieved a 214 BPI score but preliminary tests indicate that it might go higher next time around. “None of the TSU results from my genomic spring calves born in 2024 made it into the December release so they could improve the score,” Lyn said.
“If that proves to be true, I’m hoping
to rise a couple of positions if no-one else makes any major changes. We started at 278 but have been gradually climbing. Five has been my highest position – so far. A high BPI herd has always been a passion and a goal.”
Lyn says it’s “exciting times” for the stud. “We have a lot of calves and heifers coming through that are featuring right up at the top of the BPI rankings.”
The Parish family’s Jersey herd dates back to the late 1960s when Ernie and Jean Parish invested in stud heifers.
Originally using their own bulls and then AI since 1981, firstly from New Zealand but later mostly from Australia and United States, they developed a strong commercial herd. However, the stud was left dormant for a long time before current owners, Lyn and her husband David and David’s brother Paul, were inspired in 2015 to make a comeback.
Their Bonnie View farm – which will be visited as part of the World Jersey Conference tour - now peaks at 800 cows in spring but Lyn admits that’s too many. They came up with a solution to overcrowding and four years ago purchased a second dairy farm, now run by Lyn and David’s daughter Jodie alongside her sister Wendy around her duties as a vet.
“We had too many cows and the opportunity was there,” Lyn said. “The new farm, Retreat Creek, had irrigation which was one of the attractions because we don’t have any irrigation on the home farm.”
Bonnie View has endured a dry winter, fairly poor spring and an even drier summer, with hand feeding almond hulls, grain and silage to support the herd.
Retreat Creek has another advantage, allowing Lyn to relocate low-performance cows to increase her BPI.
The second farm is not totally Jersey. They bought a few of the former sharefarmers’ cows, expecting they’d know the run of the farm and could lead everyone else around, and bought in some other cows so there is a mix, including some Holsteins and cross-breds and the lower performing cows that Lyn sends there.
The relocation is usually an annual thing, most often during spring when Lyn thinks the home farm is over-populated, but occasionally it happens twice a year.
“It’s a walkable distance so we just walk 100 or 130 to the other farm,” Lyn said. “We take them down a laneway, let them stop and have a feed and then walk them on. It takes about an hour and a half.”
It’s a one-way ticket. Once they leave Bonnie View, they don’t return. “At Retreat Creek they’re just looking for production, not worrying about the BPI, and they’re cows that I don’t want to breed from because they will pull my BPI down.”
The December BPI figures included cows that were later shipped off to Retreat Creek.
Lower performing cows are also bred to Angus through the Greenham dairy-beef program and the family also owns a third farm dedicated to beef and managed by another daughter, Elizabeth. Once dairy-beef calves are reared to just past the weaning stage, Elizabeth takes them to the beef farm.
Lyn and David’s other daughters Kasey and Samantha and her husband Nick are not on the farm but play a role in the business or plan to return to the farm in the future.
Lyn attributes the stud’s improved BPI performance to her insistence on selectively using high BPI bulls, and focussing on fertility, components and health traits.
“We’re focused on breeding hard-working functional cows that suit a commercial operation.”
Dornoch was one of the original Ginfo herds and Jersey Australia classifies the heifers each year.
Consultant Amy Wright is another integral part of the breeding program, evaluating all heifers each year to create an individualised breeding report, customising reports for each cow in the milking herd and discussing suitable bull choices.
“When we’re ready to join the heifers, Amy will make a mating report and we use sexed semen in the best BPIs,” Lyn said.
“This year is the first year that we’ve got black Angus cross calves coming out of heifers solely by their BPI number. We used Angus-approved dairy beef AI straws over the heifers rather than using a Jersey bull and getting a lower resulting BPI animal. This process works well as a beef mother does not have to be retained to produce a calf to go into the Greenham program.”
All 250 of the heifer replacements are genomically tested at a young age prior to entering to the closed herd to advance the next generation through first sexed semen joining.
Lyn hasn’t classified cows in recent years but is about to correct that. “We’ve been told by people visiting the farm that we have to classify the cows,” she said. “The highest classification we had was EX93 but they estimate there are some cows that will achieve 91 or 92 points at reclassification.”

To say Jamber Jerseys is on a roll of success might be a bit of an understatement.
For the past two years, Jamber has come home from the Royal Sydney show with champion titles - and you can add an International Dairy Week title to that.
But stud masters Rob and Ashley Wilson think the best is still to come.
Jamber will be back at Sydney this year with a 20-strong team and Rob is keen for a hat trick.
Jamber Colton Veronica EX93 Max, owned with the Gavenlock family at Cherrylock Cattle Co, was crowned grand champion at International Dairy Week and champion cow at Sydney Royal in 2024.
At the 2023 Sydney Royal show their cow Burnside Victorious Honey EX92, from his father’s stud, was crowned champion cow.
Rob says he will have a “pretty decent team” of about 20 Jerseys at this year’s Syndey show.
He’ll also have plenty of good cows on the farm for people to see when the World Jersey Tour drops by.
Jamber farms is owned and operated by Robert and Ashley and family and located in Jamberoo NSW, about 90-minute drive south of Sydney. They operate two farms in the local area, milking about 500 cows across about 550 acres.
The Jersey herd consists of the Jamber stud founded by Robert and the Burnside stud founded by his parents Mark and Marion Wilson. The Jersey herd is currently averaging 7199 litres 3.9%P 276KgP 5%F 355KgF over a 305-day lactation.
They have about 130 Jerseys; the rest are mainly Holsteins along with a few Illawarras that came with the new farm which was last November. “It was a good opportunity, 400 acres just down the road, so it made sense to jump in. We’ll still sit around the 500-cow mark and hopefully do it more comfortably,” Rob said.
Rob created Jamber and registered his first cow in 2005, following on from the Burnside stud. Most of the cows now come under the Jamber prefix, with Rob and Ashley taking over the cattle and leasing the land off his parents more than two years ago.
To celebrate 20 years of breeding, Jamber will hold its first solo sale on March 18.
Rob aims to breed profitable, functionable cows that can also excel in the showring, and they have been excelling in both fields.
“Milk comes first but we also like functional, type animals that seem to have greater longevity,”
Rob said. “I like to play between both worlds of type and milk and aim for the right balance.”
Over 20 years, Rob has always maintained a focus on breeding a top-quality herd, with selective purchases and a big investment in good genetics.
He hit gold with an early purchase. “One of the cows I started with that I bought at a sale in 2004 was Miami Elmo Lady 14.
“She produced more than 10,000 litres of milk and was a show champion and bred daughters that did really well for me. We’ve got more than 80 direct descendants from her maternally along with paternal descendants.”
These days Rob looks locally for genetics. “AI-wise I use a lot more Australian stuff these days,” he said. “I still use a bit of type from overseas but Australian genetics are so balanced and have the best of both worlds. There’s a lot of good Australian stuff coming through.”
While he’s confident people will be impressed with what they see at the farm and Sydney show, Rob hopes the best might be yet to come.
“I’ve spent a lot of money on genetics and buying pedigrees and flushing since we took over the farm from mum and dad a bit over two years ago,” he said.
International cow families they are currently working with include SV Velocity Rosie, Kevetta Chrome Violin, Howacres Seacord Tesla, Schulte Bros Tequila Shot, Huronia Centurion Veronica, Bri Lin Valson Spritz, Hases Babes Lad Charo, Avonlea Premier Chocolate Chip, Avonlea Iatola Victoria, Duncan Belle, Rapid Bay Whistlers Rumour,
Huronia Connection Crystalyn, and L’ormiere Fusion Christine.
Australian families include Lovelies, Wanda, Floss, Lady, Romance, Estelle, Starbright, Benita, Silvermine, Grace, Jenny, and Fernleaf.
Rob describes himself as a “farmer first” but breeding and showing add a bit of spice to the career, and a hat trick of wins at Sydney would be “incredible”.
“The run we’ve had has been amazing,” he said. “We’re not taking it for granted and we know it will end one day but we still want to improve. I keep saying to my mate, if I get three years in a row at Sydney, I should call it quits, but no, I’ll keep pushing and
trying to make it better and better. There’s always something to push for.
“Farming has its ups and downs but when you have a bad day you can look back on your breeding and feel proud about what you’ve done.”

Les Bennett has gone out on a high note as he ends his 20-year career as a classifier for Jersey Australia.
The very last cow he classified before retiring, Bushlea Irwins Jenny, was the first he ranked 96 points.
“That’s the highest cow I’ve ever classified,” Les said. “I’ve had three 95-point cows but she was my first 96 so it was good to go out on a high and it was nice when the second classifier confirmed my score.”
As per Jersey Australia rules for cows classified 95 or higher, a second classifier was required to review the cow to confirm Les’s classification.
Bushlea Irwins Jenny went on to be Reserve Champion Cow at International Dairy Week and Les says she’s a great example of the modern dairy cow.
“She’s almost perfect in every trait. If you’re going to have an ideal cow, you’d have a photo of her.”
Les has classified thousands of cows over the past two decades in a career that has taken him from the Atherton Tablelands to Tasmania.
While the cows have been wonderful, the people have been even better.
“Meeting new people has been the best part of it,” Les said. “I’ve made some great friends all over the place through classifying.”
There have been a few hiccups along the way, but Les thoroughly recommends the role to anyone interested in classifying.
“I don’t think you can call yourself a classifier unless you’ve been hopelessly lost at some stage. When I started, all we were going off were road maps but it’s better these days with the technology.”
Likewise, Les supports the technology behind Jersey Australia’s new classification system. “I used the new system on my last tour and was very impressed with it,” he said.
“There will be a lot more uniformity among classifiers. All we’re doing now is putting in the linear scores and the system calculates the final score. It will be more accurate and uniform.”
Les was asked in 2002 by then head of the classifier panel Alan Carson to join the team.
“I thought it was something I’d like to have a crack at but I put him off for a year or two because we had a young family at the time. I went to classifier field days for a couple of years but my first tour was 2004.”
While he learnt a lot from the field days which made sure all classifiers were on the same page, Les was already a fan of the classification system and he still has his cows classified, usually twice a year.
“It’s good for marketing and it helps with promotion,” he said. “It important for members to get their two-year-olds classified because that data goes into the bull proofs.”
Les says a good classifier needs to understand cows and the need to follow the system. “You’ve got to have an eye for it and then be able to put it into the linear.”
His efforts were helped by his background. “It helps if you’ve grown up with them,” he said. “My parents also owned a Jersey stud so I’ve always worked with them which has helped.”
On his own farm, Les has received a 94-point classification for Wanstead Valentino Ivette.
“I was very happy the day we got that,” he said. “I purchased her as a two-year-old. I saw her in the paddock and thought I had to have her.”
He also bred Benlee Park Heather 26 that was sold as a three-year-old and has gone on to classify 94 points for her new owners.
While he has retired from classifying, Les is still milking his mostly Jersey herd of 165 cows at Macorna in Northern Victoria alongside his son and sharefarmer Ryan.
He’ll miss the interaction with fellow farmers that comes with classifying, but admits it was time to step back.
“I’ve really enjoyed myself but I have a crook back and standing on concrete all day has been tough the past couple of years. When I started, I was in my late 30s but now I’m in my early 60s and it’s time to step back a bit.
“But if anyone is thinking of having a go at being a classifier, I highly recommend it.”
For over six decades we’ve worked hand in hand with progressive Breeders to identify the best Australian Jersey genetics.
While breeders have developed superior cow families, we have progeny tested bulls from these elite females to identify the best genetics to help progress the breed. Today genomics has been a game changer and Australian Jersey breeders have embraced this technology and genetic progress has never been greater.
Our commitment has never wavered – generation after generation, we continue to source the strongest and most productive Jersey genetics in the industry.
At Genetics Australia we are proud to be the major sponsor of the World Jersey Conference to help showcase to the world the quality and depth of the Australia Jersey breed. We are also proud to have played a small part in making the Australian Jersey one of the world’s greatest dairy breeds.
Together we are creating the future of Australian Jersey genetics, generation after generation. Phone:

The incredible combination of genetic power, diversity, and depth provides you the flexibility to handpick Jersey sires to help you achieve your goals. There is power in ABS Global Jersey sires.
PRESIDENT: WAYNE KUHNE | SECRETARY: OLIVIA WATSON | TREASURER: ALEX MATHEWS
Inverlair Heights Jersey stud was established in 1981 by Barrie and Sue Allan and their children Brett and Tanya. The current farm at Mardan has been in the Allan's name since the land was settled in the 1870's! At nearly 85 years old, Barrie has officially handed the reigns to his daughter, Tanya, who represents the 4th generation on the farm. Tanya has worked on the property her whole life while also holding an off-farm job at the local secondary college. Tanya and her son Levi (14) currently run the 235 acre property milking 120 registered Jerseys and rearing all young stock on the property. The farm employs a casual worker who helps milk during calving and covers milkings when Tanya’s daughter Ava (12) has dance competitions to attend.
Inverlair Heights remains a seasonal calving herd, but the short turnaround for getting cows back in calf is becoming more and more challenging.
Over the years, the herd has been heavily influenced by bloodlines from 'Kooroo', 'Inverell', 'Mapleton','Parrabel', 'Barwidgee','Lynbrae','Fleurieu' and 'Bushlea'. Barrie remembers the financial struggles his family faced after losing his father at a young age. And remembers when other farmers would leave Jersey calves tied to their mailbox, where his passion shifted from Illawarra Shorthorns to Jerseys!
Their herd has been closed for quite some time, with the last animal they purchased at a sale was 'Tbone Belle' from Bushlea. Her Genomics came back skyhigh and she was selectively bred to the highest genomic bull at the time 'Raceway'. This resulted in a bull 'Inverlair Heights Raceway Ferrari' who was later sold to Central Sires. One of most influential families within the herd has been the ‘Fernleafs’, with Keith Kuhne noting that Inverleigh Heights has the most Fernleafs in any herd without relying on flushing.
Tanya has dabbled in sexed semen but has found it too unreliable achieving early pregnancies, which is critical for a seasonal calving herd. Instead, its more important for her to get them in calf over a sexed semen pregnancy. The Good Bull guide is utilised to help chose sires alongside conversations with other farmers to see what works for them. A well-rounded proof, balancing fertility, body capacity, feet and legs, mammary and BPI remain key in their bull team.
In the past, Classification, Herd Test and Registration have been important but in the last few years, they have only been classifying sporadically, due to cost and lack of a need to sell animals. They still Herd test bi-monthly & still register all calves, but have lost a little faith in the cost vs the value of doing this
Showing was a big part of Inverlair Heights, with plenty of success at local shows. But these days, there just isn’t enough time for it. For Tanya, it was a huge part of her childhood.
The family remains active members of the South Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club and has previously been involved with the Central Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club. They have also enjoyed participating in On-Farm Challenge Competitions, twice winning Champion Cow and frequently qualifying for the Great Southern Challenge.
Barrie supplied Murray Goulburn Milk Factory for over 60 years and when the last Australian Co-op collapsed it was felt very hard by the Allan family, we stayed with Saputo for a few years… but now supply Bulla. It was very important to them to supply a family-owned Australian Company that takes pride in it's products.
