It is with great pride that I welcome you to the very first edition of the Australian Dairy Breeds Journal. This publication represents something new, but also something deeply rooted in the traditions and values that have always bound dairy farmers together - commitment, passion, and community.
For too long, our sector has tended to operate in silos, divided by breed or organisation. Yet, the reality is that what unites us is far greater than what separates us.
Whether you milk Holsteins, Jerseys, or other dairy breeds, we share the same dedication to breeding better cattle, the same challenges of running resilient businesses, and the same passion for ensuring that our industry remains strong for the generations to come.
The decision by Holstein Australia and Jersey Australia to work together on this Journal is more than a publishing venture, it is a statement of intent.
At a time when the registered dairy sector faces contraction and increasing pressures, collaboration is no longer optional; it is essential.
By joining forces in this new publication, we are strengthening the voice of our community, creating new opportunities to share knowledge, celebrate achievements, and showcase the very best of Australian dairy breeding to the world.
The Journal will highlight stories from across the country, shine a light on the people behind the cattle, and provide insights that help us grow stronger together.
Most importantly, it is designed to bring us closer as a community, reminding us that while we may milk different breeds, we are all part of the same team when it comes to the future of Australian dairying.
I invite you to read, contribute, and share in the journey of this new publication.
Together, we are stronger.
It is with great excitement that I introduce to you the launch of the Australian Dairy Breeds Journal which marks an important step forward for our organisation and its members. For many years, the Australian Jersey Journal served us well, providing a trusted platform to share members and industry news, achievements, and insights. This new Journal published in partnership with Holstein Australia has been designed with you, our members, at its heart. It brings a fresh look, a modern style, and with the ambition to expand to all Australian Dairy Breeds we see this as in important step towards ensuring we can continue to deliver a published journal to you, our members.
Importantly, this magazine is not just about telling stories - it is about building connections. It is a space where we can showcase our collective achievements, highlight opportunities, and share perspectives from across our industry. I encourage you to engage with this new publication, promote your stud to widening audience and your ideas, and take pride in the vibrant dairy community it represents. Together, we will ensure this magazine becomes a valuable voice for Jersey Australia members and wider dairy industry
Jersey Australia President
How exciting it is to publish this the inaugural Australian Dairy Breeds Journal! I congratulate the Boards of Holstein Australia and Jersey Australia for uniting two outstanding legacy publications that have respectively been the voice of our breeds for more than half a century.
While a range of circumstances has led to the decision to bring the two journals together, our most important consideration is to ensure that the registered dairy sector continues to have a strong and relevant voice. You have our commitment that the Australian Dairy Breeds Journal will uphold your trust and deliver on that promise.
We are already looking ahead to Edition No. 2 in December, with plans to take the next steps toward developing a truly all-breeds journal. Contributions will be invited from all dairy breeds, as we work towards making this publication the united voice of our entire industry.
Over the past 10 months, I have been working with a client to facilitate a live heifer shipment and open a new market opportunity for Australian dairy farmers. The aim has been twofold: to improve farm gate returns for Australian dairy farmers while also lifting the pedigree standards of exported heifers, ensuring they represent our industry at its best.
Unfortunately, what we have seen instead, are elements of the live export industry that have worked against these goals - driving farm gate returns down, devaluing pedigree integrity, and undermining the role of Breed Associations in safeguarding true-to-breed standards. Too often, commercial expediency and cost-cutting have been prioritised over long-term value and reputation.
Live export remains a vitally important part of the Australian dairy farm business. It should be an area where exporters, farmers, and breed associations work together to build mutually beneficial partnerships that reward quality and strengthen market opportunities.
How we resolve these ongoing issues remains unclear. Past efforts to move the China market towards full F certificate pedigree standards have stumbled, not because the pathway was unachievable, but because convenient excuses were made rather than the real challenges being addressed.
The solutions and answers to this issue is not clear and easily achievable but it is certainly one that needs a strong message to all stakeholders that Australian dairy farmers should not be taken for granted.
Jersey Australia welcomes the following new members to the Association.

We warmly welcome our new members and look forward to seeing them on farm or at Jersey / Holstein events across the country.
The past 12 months have tested the resilience of dairy farmers across the country. Floods, drought, rising feed costs and fluctuating milk prices have placed enormous pressure on many of our members. Yet, true to form, farmers continue to show not only remarkable strength in the face of these challenges, but also the generosity and spirit of community that define our industry - always ready to lend a hand to neighbours when times are tough.
It is that sense of connection and shared purpose that lies behind the launch of this new publication, The Australian Dairy Breeds Journal. Produced in partnership between Holstein Australia and Jersey Australia, the Journal is designed to bring the registered dairy community closer together. Through stories of members, profiles of outstanding cattle, industry developments, and coverage of key events, we aim to reflect the depth and diversity of our sector while celebrating the people who drive it forward.
I firmly believe this initiative will strengthen ties across the breeds and provide members with an even greater sense of involvement in the life of their industry.
Closer to home, October will see Holstein Australia’s Annual Awards dinner staged as a stand-alone event for the first time. Set against the backdrop of the mighty Murray, the evening will be an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of our members achievements that continue to advance the reputation of the great Australian Holstein cow.
This year has once again produced an exceptional standard of entries in both the Semex All-Australian Photographic Competition and the Cow of the Year contest. I extend my sincere thanks to all members who entered, proudly promoting the breed both nationally and internationally, and to our judges for the expertise and time they contribute.
As we move into the busiest part of the show season, I wish every exhibitor the very best. Behind the spotlight of competition lies a huge amount of preparation and commitment, and it is thanks to the dedication of members, families, and supporters that our shows continue to thrive.

Eighteen-year-old Gippsland dairy farmer Harry Dodd is about to embark on the experience of a lifetime, representing Holstein Australia on its youth exchange program with Holstein UK.
Harry, who runs his own herd under the HL-Starcrest prefix at his family’s Jindivick farm, grew up immersed in dairying. His parents, Hayden and Danielle, established the Starcrest Holsteins Master Breeder herd and, when Harry was christened, gifted him his first cow, a daughter of All-Australian 5 year old Starcrest Royal Petal. Today, Harry manages 70 registered Holsteins, with a special fondness for the Mary family, a line renowned for its fertility, strength, and dominance in show rings from Brisbane to Sydney for more than a century.
“My passion has always been the Holstein breed,” says Harry. “From showing cattle locally and nationally to developing my own herd, I see this exchange as a chance to build knowledge in breeding, showing and farm practices. It’s my first time overseas, and I want to take everything I learn back to the farm and share i with other young dairy farmers in Gippsland.”
As a committee member of the Gippsland Dairy Youth Group, Harry is keen to pass on his experiences, whether it’s insights into new genetics and AI sires, or practical skills from the UK show scene. His own showing highlights include success at the Gippsland All Breeds Dairy Youth Show, and a memorable win in the Senior TwoYear-Old class at 2024 Victorian Winter Fair with S C Petal.
The exchange runs from 8th September to 6th October, coinciding with the UK’s busiest month for dairy events. Harry will stay with Holstein UK members across England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, taking part in major fixtures including UK Dairy Day, the National Holstein Show, the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show, and the Royal Bath & West Dairy Show.
For Harry, it’s a chance not only to deepen his own skills but also to strengthen the next generation of Australian dairy leadership.
Good luck to our 2025 Australian team; Leah Dickson, Mitch Atkins, Claudia Ross, Toby Flemming, Renee Anderson and Team Captain Callum McPhee as they head to Belgium in September to take part in the Young Breeders School.
This is an incredible opportunity to showcase Australia on the international stage as our young breeders compete alongside teams from across the globe. We look forward to following their journey and will share a full wrap-up in the next issue of the Australian Dairy Breeds Journal.
Sadly team member, Abbie Hanks was unable to travel as she recovers from concussion following a netball game last month. Her presence will be greatly missed and we thank her for her commitment to the team while wishing her a speedy recovery.. Follow along via the Young Breeders School Facebook page or on our Young Breeders School Australia Facebook page to stay up to date.
As advised to Holstein Australia members in August, a number of service fees will be updated from 1st October 2025.
As with many businesses in the agricultural sector, the cost of delivering services has increased considerably in recent years. To ensure that Holstein Australia can continue to provide high-quality services and support to members, the Board has approved adjustments to several fees, including registrations and classifications.
Members can continue to access services at current rates until 30th September 2025.
We appreciate members’ understanding as we make these changes to safeguard the Association’s long-term sustainability and ability to invest in the future of the Holstein breed in Australia.

The Fry family’s Katandra Park stud, owned and operated by Don, Lorelle and Lachlan in Brunswick Junction, WA, is home to a 50-50 split of registered Holsteins and Jerseys - an uncommon but highly effective strategy in Western Australia’s dairy landscape.
The farm is located about 160km south of Perth on the banks of the Brunswick River, supplemented with additional leased land within a half hour radius to support young stock and homegrown fodder.
The Fry family’s dedication to breed development is evident in their registration history. Don began registering Holsteins under his ‘Markdon’ prefix in 1972, later changing to ‘Katandra Park’ in 1988 soon after he and Lorelle got married. A single Jersey was added in 1994 and this year marks 30 years of breeding Jerseys.
The Frys obtained their Holstein Master Breeder award in 2019 and are striving to one day repeat this in the Jersey space. Lachlan, a fourth-generation dairy farmer, has served on advisory sub-committees for both breeds, as well as Don serving as Jersey Australia board member for several years. Breeding goals are consistent across both breeds, with a focus on type, production, and strong cow families. The Jerseys, in particular, have flourished from a solid foundation built on the Damaris line, with the Vanessa and Daisy families now playing a prominent role.
The family tends to favour Holsteins in the showing ring because of the greater competition, recently claiming Junior, Intermediate & Senior Champions at the 2025 WA Autumn Dairy Fair. In recent on-farm competitions, the Fry’s have earned top honours across both breeds. Katandra Park Boast Daisy was named champion two-year-old and reserve champion cow at a Farmwest White Gold All-Breeds OFC. In the Semex Holstein Australia WA competition last November, Katandra Park won premier breeder and exhibitors as well as overall champion cow with their five-year old, Doorman Rae.
Looking ahead, the Fry’s remain committed to the 50:50 model. The farm has a fresh milk contract with Coles and the mixed herd is well suited to this arrangement. “It’s a system that works for us - operationally and financially.
We’re equally passionate about both breeds and excited about future opportunities to share resources and knowledge across the Holstein and Jersey communities.”
Jersey Australia extends its sincere thanks to Rosie Phillips and Kelsie Hore, who have both recently finished their employment with the Association.
Rosie has been with Jersey Australia for 5 ½ years, managing our accounts and supporting operations across Dairy House, including work with Holstein Australia and DataGene. She will finish with us in mid-September as she takes on a new full-time role. We thank Rosie for her contribution and wish her every success in her new position and future endeavours.
Kelsie has been part of our Member Services team for 2 ½ years and, over the past 12 months, has also taken on our layout and design work. This experience has led to her new role in Project Management, Layout and Design for the Australian Dairy Breeds Journal. While Kelsie will no longer be undertaking Member Services, we look forward to continuing to work with her through the Journal and our promotions activities.
We thank both Rosie and Kelsie for their dedication and contributions to Jersey Australia and wish them well for the future.

Andrew and Angela Koch’s farm in South Australia’s Barossa Valley farm was a well-established Holstein operation in 2000, but deregulation changed that.
“We were traditionally Holstein breeders and got our first Master Breeder award in 2000,” Andrew recalls.
“That was when deregulation was coming, and it was suggested we add some Jerseys to the herd to lift components to recapture some of three cents per litre in the milk price that was expected to be lost.
“We were up for a new challenge.”
Glenunga Holsteins was joined by Ashtaney Jerseys (named after their daughters Ashleigh, Taylah and Courtney) and today they milk about 200 Holsteins and 100 Jerseys with year-round calving to fit their Woolworths Farmer’s Own brand flat supply contract.
For a long time, they milked only about 30 Jerseys and 230250 Holsteins after struggling with too many Jersey bull calves. When sexed semen came along, they started correcting that and improving the mix.
“The 30 we were milking weren’t having a big impact on the components in the vat but the mix we’ve got now I feel is about right,” Andrew says. “I wouldn’t milk any more Jerseys simply because the Holsteins have the advantage in cull cow value and calf price and export markets.”
While Angela was keen on the Jerseys, they did lead to extra workload at shows. “Now we take two breeds instead of one, which wasn’t the greatest move,” Andrew admits.
“When we started, even though we bought stud animals, I said we were going to keep them strictly commercial. We’d be silly to try to run two studs. But we milked them for a year and we went to the Mt Pleasant show which was a three-day show at the time so I made the fatal mistake of watching the Jersey judging and got very itchy feet.
“I knew I had some handy animals that would be quite competitive. The temptation became too great so the following year we entered and showed five head, winning reserve champion cow, best udder, intermediate and juvenile champion and we were most successful exhibitor.
“It has stuck ever since and we still show with both breeds.”
At the 2024 Adelaide Royal show they had both Jersey and Holstein champions. There was a bit of internal family rivalry for the Supreme cow title, with the Jersey eventually holding sway.
Andrew says they will stick with the mixed breed. “The girls wouldn’t let me get rid of the Jerseys!” he jokes.
Andrew and Natalie Marks’ herd is heavily weighted towards Jerseys, but Holsteins and Ayrshires also make a valuable contribution.
The Winvarl Jersey stud was established in 1942 and Andrew, a fourth-generation farmer near Dorrigo in New South Wales, now milks 220-230 cows, about 80 per cent Jerseys, 10 per cent Holsteins and 10 per cent Ayrshires.
The farm always had a few Holsteins but they weren’t registered until about 10 years ago when they bought some registered cows and decided to go the next step.
Andrew likes the current mix and plans to continue it, even with broader changes to their faming system.
“It’s just something different; they’ve all got their point of difference,” he says. “The Jerseys are a profitable, compact cow that handles our country fairly well, the Holsteins were introduced to add a bit more volume.”
Natalie likes Ayrshires so that portion was added to the herd.
“We like their longevity,” Andrew says. “You can quite comfortably have 10-12-year-old Ayrshires still very functional.
While the 80-10-10 mix is likely to continue, their breeding objectives have changed slightly since a compost barn was added to the farm in 2024.
“We now house cows part-time depending on the conditions,” Andrew said. The wet environment is predominantly from January to May but the cows were back under shelter at the end of July when the area was hit by snow.
It was a big investment, but Andrew says the paybacks from the benefits make it worthwhile.
“When the cows are in the shed, we get 20-25 per cent more production quite comfortably. They’re not burning energy just to keep warm.”
The farm usually receives about 2 metres of rain per year, but that has been edging up to 3 metres in recent. “We’re getting extreme conditions so you get peace of mind from putting the cows in the shed.”

Supporting Comments: Verbena is a cow with the kindest nature. She consistently breeds quality animals. We own several of Verbena’s daughters and granddaughters and they all have the same great nature that she does. They are no fuss, high producing animals with low cell counts. She still competes in the milking herd as a 15yr old thanks to her youthful udder, strong mobility and excellent type. Purchasing Verbena was one of the best decisions we ever made and we are so proud and passionate about this magnificent cow.
Judges Comments: As a seventeen-star brood cow Verbena is creating a legacy reflecting her ability to transmit high production and type genes.
The The Mary cow family is a bloodline steeped in history and tradition. Packed with acclaimed brood cows and show champions, it has been the cornerstone behind some of Australia’s most influential Holstein breeders – including the renowned Brundee herd of V.J. Lamond, and the Wyoming herd of Aub and Charlie Shearer.
Over the past century, the Marys have conquered the Royals, from Brisbane to Melbourne to Sydney, with successive generations winning countless championship titles across multiple states.
Now they have their sights set on International Dairy Week with several family members featuring prominently at the event earlier this year – including the winning senior 2-year-old, Wyoming Diamondback Mary VG86, exhibited by Brad and Tayah Fraser of Riversbend Holsteins, Harry Dodd’s HL-Starcrest Samite Marty EX-90-1E, who placed sixth in a very strong 6-year-old class, and the yearling heifer Starcrest Eyecandy Mary who was crowned Reserve Junior Champion with a Junior Handler, led by Harry’s younger sister Violet.
In this, a new wave of Marys are finding success as a new chapter begins for the next generation of Holstein Master Breeders.
CONQUERED THE ROYALS
The The origins of the Marys can be traced more than 100 years to Volume 1 of the Australian Holstein herdbook. On the 15th of December 1910, Lunta IV of Brundee (herdbook no.46, Vol.1.) was born on the farm of the renowned Brundee Holsteins herd of A.C. and V.J. Lamond, Nowra, NSW.
Brundee was undeniably one of the most influential Holstein herds of its generation, and dominated the NSW showring and production awards throughout the early 1900’s.
In 1931, a granddaughter of Lunta IV was among
the top production dairy cows in the country. Brundee Damsel’s Fanny 2nd was tested under the NSW Department of Agriculture’s herdimprovement scheme, with an official 300-day record of 11,335 lb. (5,141litres) of milk, 3.7%, 417 lb. (189kg) of butter-fat.
Fanny 2nd had two daughters, including the 1941 Champion Cow at Sydney Royal, Brundee Damsel’s Pride.
Damsel’s Pride was the mother of the acclaimed Brundee Damsels Pride 4th. Pride 4th won three successive titles at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show in 1948, 1949 and 1950. She then reclaimed her title in 1953 as an 11-year-old, in what was the 23rd consecutive Sydney Royal Championship title for the Lamond family.
In 1945, Damsel’s Pride produced the heifer Brundee Mary Princess 2nd who was sold to Singleton NSW breeders Aub and Charlie Shearer. The Shearers often sourced cattle from Brundee to bolster their Wyoming Holsteins herd, and like the Brundee herd before them, they too would eventually become synonymous with success at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show.
In the early days, Aub and Charlie were known for transporting their show team to the city via the train, before walking them along the main streets of Sydney from the station to the showgrounds. Today, the Wyoming prefix has succeeded to Charlie’s daughter Janelle Wenham, and her husband Russell. Janelle said her father and grandfather shared a great eye for dairy cows, and she has since tried to replicate their tradition of breeding for depth of pedigree, with an appreciation for cows that have a wide muzzle, open rib and a flat dairy bone.
“Dad always liked cows with constitution – cows that could stand over a bale of hay and had shovels at the front end. The Mary’s are all like that,” Janelle said.
Calving for the last time as a 16-year-old, Princess Mary 2nd produced ten registered progeny at Wyoming, including Wyoming Mary May VG86 2*, born in September 1950.
Janelle was only a baby when Mary May was active in the herd – yet she retains vivid memories of the great foundation cow.
“Mary May was everyone’s favourite cow when I was a kid,” Janelle said. “I would have been only three years old when she died, but I can remember her like it was yesterday. She had big curly horns and a beautiful nature, and would let us kids climb all over her.”
Mary May classified VG86 as a 16-year-old, and produced more than 95,000litres lifetime across 15 lactations. She won her first Royal Championship at Sydney as a 6-year-old in 1956. Her second title came as a 9-year-old at Brisbane Royal in 1959.
Twenty years later, the Mary’s were back at the top of Brisbane Royal when Mary May’s granddaughter Wyoming Kriss Mary 2nd EX-3E 2* won Champion Cow in 1979.
“You could not have wished for an easier cow to work with,” Janelle said of Kriss Mary “She was a great cow to milk with a tremendous temperament, a tremendous udder and such unbelievable depth of rib, you could have crawled inside her.”
A cross to Agro Acres Marquis Ned produced the incomparable Royal Show juggernaut, Wyoming Ned Mary 3rd EX-2E 4*. She won her first Royal title in 1981 as Junior Champion at Sydney, before returning as Champion Cow in 1986. She was named All Australian Mature Cow in 1985. Then as a 9-year-old in 1987, she followed her mother’s footsteps, becoming the third out of four generations to win Champion Cow at Brisbane.
As a 10-year-old, Ned Mary 3rd was flushed to Longsfarm Kay Elevator, resulting in the influential brood cow, Wyoming Kahreena Mary-ET VG87 STP 11* LIFE 1. Kahreena Mary produced 81,415 litres from 11 lactations, calving the last time as a 14-year-old.
Though she had some success in the showring as a dry heifer, Janelle said Kahreena Mary never developed the depth of rib to make the Wyoming show team as a mature cow.
“She took a bit longer to develop, but with her genetics, we were pretty confident we could breed something good out of her – and we did,” Janelle said.
To build the extra capacity, the “constructor bull” Broker was the obvious combination, resulting in the striking white cow, Wyoming Sweet Mary EX-5E STP4*. In 1997, Sweet Mary was crowned Junior Champion at the NSW State Show, and was named the All Australian 2-year-old dry heifer that same year.
In 1998, Sweet Mary became the third cow in four generations to win Champion Cow at Sydney when she won the Intermediate title in 1998. Then, like many Marys before her, she returned as a mature cow to win Champion in 2002.
Over the decades, many Marys have broughtsuccess to their new owners. It brings a great sense of pride for Janelle who, having recently retired from dairying, continues her active love for breeding with some select members of her most precious bloodlines.
Most recently, Jannelle and Russell sold a group of pregnant heifers to a pair of local breeders, Brad and Tayah Fraser. The young couple have just started their new dairy operation Riversbend Holsteins, milking 140 cows at Denman in northern NSW. Among the group was a big black heifer sired by Mr D Apple Diamondback.
Wyoming Diamondback Mary VG86 is a fifthgeneration VG/EX descendant of Kahreena Mary. She was named Champion Cow for the Hunter Valley during their Semex On Farm Challenge in 2024 – giving her new owners Brad and Tayah the incentive to enter her at IDW where she finished first in a very strong Senior 2-year-old class.
Janelle said Diamondback Mary was always a standout.
“Even as a calf she had that big Mary framework and looked like a heifer with a good future,” she said. “To know your genetics are still out there, and to see young breeders do so well with them is a real honour. She couldn’t have gone to a better home. If anyone was going to have success with her, it’s people like Brad and Tayah.”
Behind every Master Breeder story, there is a cow that forever changed the trajectory of their breeding program. For Hayden and Danielle Dodd of Starcrest Holsteins – it was Wyoming Broker Mary VG88 29*.
Broker Mary was a daughter of Kahreena Mary, and an elder full sister to the acclaimed Sweet Mary. She was Hayden’s first ever Holstein, bought when he was just 15-years-old. Her influence forever solidified Hayden’s appreciation for the Holstein breed, with her descendants now representing more than one third of the current Starcrest herd.
Hayden and Danielle, along with their children Harry (18) and Violet (15), milk 280 registered Holsteins on 112 hectares at Jindivick, 20kms north of Warragul in north west Gippsland. Hayden is the fifth generation to work the family farm, forming Starcrest Holsteins in 2002 after merging his family’s Galla Bank Holsteins with Danielle’s Rickdale Holsteins.
It was the January of 1995 when a teenage Hayden made the bold choice to purchase his first black and white heifer, introducing the Holstein breed to his family’s small herd of Ayrshires and crossbreds.
As a budding showman attending his first International Dairy Week, Hayden arrived with his heart set on buying a heifer at the illustrious Semex Spectacular Sale hosted on stage at the Civic Centre in Shepparton.
After hitching a ride to the event, Hayden set about inspecting the sale lots, scribbling his notes on the palm of his hand.
When the Conant-Acres-JY Broker daughter walked onto the stage, Hayden was immediately blown away by her strength and style. Though he had never heard of the Wyoming herd, or the Master Breeder Charlie Shearer, there was something about Mary that appealed to him.
Hayden remembered the photos in the catalogue of successive family members that had won champion cow at Sydney Royal. So, bolstered by youthful enthusiasm, gut instinct and a bit of luck, he bought the 12-month-old heifer for $3,700.
Little did Hayden know that this heifer would later become the cornerstone of his own Master Breeder Holstein herd.
Thirty years on, Broker Mary’s descendants have provided the Dodd’s with consistently high classification scores, countless performance awards, AI bull mothers, On Farm Challenge winners and the ultimate in showring success.
At 29 Stars, Broker Mary now stands among the all-time leading brood cows ever in Australia.
Starcrest Holsteins was awarded Master Breeder status in 2024. Hayden attributes their success to strong cow families, and a breeding program aimed at generating cows worthy of a Holstein Australia Superior Total Performance award.
“A lot of people see breeding as an artform – not a science,” he said. “I believe it’s actually a bit of both. You need to use the science – and make that an artform.”
According to Hayden, the STP cow typifies his strategy of producing durable, long-lasting cows that produce high quality milk with strong udder attachments – all traits of which his Marys excel.
“The thing about the Mary’s are their udders –always really good uddered cows,” Hayden says proudly. “They’re aggressive and push their way to the front with a lot of width and strength. It’s that dairy strength, their udders and their good components that makes you want more of them – and their good fertility allows that to happen.”
Growing up Hayden said his dream was to win Supreme Dairy Cow at Royal Melbourne Show with a cow he bred.
Hayden achieved his dream in 2006 when the 6-year-old Galla Bank First Petal EX-91-3E STP 4* LIFE 1 (not a Mary) was crowned Supreme Dairy Cow, with the 4-year-old Galla Bank Leader Maryjane-ET EX-93-4E STP 4* LIFE 3 awarded Supreme Allbreeds Vessel.
With her EX-94 mammary system, Hayden says Leader Maryjane was a standout from the moment she hit the dairy. The Comestar Leader daughter of Broker Mary had her breakout show winning the 2-year-old in milk class at the IDW Youth Show in 2001. In 2003, she won Supreme Holstein Vessel and placed second in the 4-yearold class at Melbourne Royal before repeating the feat in 2006. Her udder even had the quality to win Supreme Udder at IDW in 2007, despite being five months into her lactation.
“Her udder was something I’d never seen, and yet she just continued to get better and better” Hayden said proudly.
Leader Maryjane was the result of a flush that also resulted in two Excellent ET full sisters – Galla Bank Leader Mary-ET EX-90-3E STP 3* 1xF LIFE 1 and the 2002 Royal Melbourne Intermediate Champion, Galla Bank Leader Maryjo-ET EX-90-1E STP 3* LIFE 1.
While a fourth sister, Galla Bank Leader Marymay -ET VG86 8* was unable to match the classification scores of her siblings, she proved to be an exceptional brood cow at 100% VG progeny. Hayden said some of his favourite Marys in the herd today trace back to Leader Marymay’s daughter, Starcrest Dante Marymay-ET EX-90-1E STP 5* LIFE1, including Starcrest Monterey Marymay-ET EX-91-3E STP who produced 11,675litres and 738kg milk solids on her last lactation.
“She’s one of the best cows we have at the moment,” he said of the View-Home Monterey daughter. “She’s a beautiful type cow that calves every year, and she’s razor sharp with a good udder.”
Aside from the Leader flush, Broker Mary also had great results from flushes to Robthom Integrity and Ladino Park Talent.
Starcrest Integrity Mary-ET VG88 was named the All Australian 2-year-old after winning Intermediate Champion at Royal Melbourne in 2005.
The Talent sisters, Starcrest Talent Mary-ET EX91-2E 5*, Starcrest Talent Maryme-ET VG89 and Starcrest Talent Maryjoy-ET VG88 each produced more than 50,000litres lifetime.
Hayden described his favourite Talent Mary as “a tank of a thing”, scored EX-96 for dairy strength, with EX-93 rup and an EX-90 mammary.
“She was a beautiful big and wide cow with a really good udder. Even as a calf, she was always that bit wider and deeper than her sisters,” Hayden said.
Though Talent Mary did not have a huge impact in the show ring, she managed to win the local West Gippsland On Farm Challenge. According to Hayden, most of the best Mary’s in the Starcrest today are descendants of Talent Mary,
including their IDW Youth Show winner and 2025 All Australian Finalist, Starcrest Eyecandy Mary.
Despite all their success, Hayden says one of his biggest thrills came when his daughter Violet led Eyecandy Mary to first in her class and Reserve Junior Champion with a Junior Handler at this year’s IDW Youth Show.
Hayden said from the time Eyecandy Mary was born, he was struck by her similarity to the many famous Mary’s that had gone before her.
“She even has the markings and the shape of the old Ned cow,” Hayden said. “She has that similar head carriage with great length and width. She’s as good a heifer as we’ve ever bred.”
After taking a small hiatus from the show ring to focus on their family and their business, Hayden and his family are enjoying their return, along with the comradery and the competitiveness of the showring.
“When I first started – I was just a 10-year-old Ayrshire kid that wanted to go to Melbourne Show. Now showing is something our whole family can be involved in,” he said.
“There’s a lot of stuff you can learn from showing that you can apply on farm. Learning how a cow eats and how to predict her behaviours and patterns – this is knowledge you can use even when milking large scale commercial herds.”
“I have met so many farmers my age that have never seen what happens outside of Gippsland,” he said. “I’ve been to Malanda and to the Darling Downs in Queensland, to Southeast South Australia and Western Australia and Tassie – and everywhere I go I meet people and learn things.”
“I’ve had a lot of great opportunities and experiences – all of this from buying that Broker calf.”
As a four-time Sydney Royal Champion, Brundee Damsels Pride 4th was a groundbreaking dairy cow of the early 1900’s. She is also the 11th generation behind a groundbreaking cow of the 21st century in the legendary two-time IDW Champion, All Australian and fellow Sydney Champion, Fairvale

To the Central Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club, the Smethurst name immediately brings up the image of club Life member Jim Smethurst (pictured). Breeding under the Lang Park Prefix along with his wife Doris, Jim spent many years on the local club committee and served as a classifier for Jersey Australia visiting farms throughout the country to classify the golden brown cow. Not only a Life member of the CGJBC, Jim also received a Distinguished Service award from Jersey Australia. Widely known as gentleman Jim to many, he will always be remembered as a well respected member of the Jersey breed and a great mentor to the next generation, of which benefited greatly from his wisdom and time invested in them.
When the Lang Park Jersey Stud was passed down, half remained under the Lang Park prefix with older son Geoff and the other half under the Riverdell prefix managed by their younger son Alby. During this time both Jim and Doris continued to be a presence around club functions. Geoff in his own right was also a very active member throughout his time being involved in the CGJBC serving as club secretary, served on the Jersey Australia Vic branch committee and was also instrumental in setting up the successful Central Sires Cooperative which has proven numerous Jersey sires. As time went on the Lang Park Stud ceased once Geoff and wife Lois stopped dairying, as did the Riverdell Jersey Stud when Alby relocated to Canada, the homeland of his wife Gillian where they dairy farm together until this day.
During the years of expansion and to allow for both Geoff and Alby to begin their own dairying journeys the original farm owned by Jim & Doris was sold. The farm was purchased by Jim’s brother Peter, which helped him expand on his adjoining dairy farm where he milked a commercial Holstein herd. There were also 2 more brothers being Ted and Bruce who dairy farmed within the area nearby on their own respective dairying enterprises.
Bruce being the youngest of the 4 brothers eventually made his way down to the rolling hills of Princetown in Western Victoria. It was then following in older brother Jim’s footsteps that Bruce along with his wife Lorraine started their own Jersey Stud in 1966 under the Lerida Park prefix, with the purchase of 10 to 15 in calf heifers from various “Lang Park” cow families forming the foundations. Now owned by their son Rhys Smethurst and wife Lauren, the Lerida Park Jersey Stud progressed throughout the years to become one of the premier Jersey herds in Western Victoria. In more recent times with no future generations wishing to dairy, retirement plans to think of and a neighbour wishing to expand. The decision was made by Rhys and Lauren to sell the farm and with it the milking herd dispersal of Lerida Park Jerseys to follow.
With the Lerida Park Jersey Stud Dispersal in sight, a very unique opportunity presented itself to Troy and Leanne Smethurst. Not only the chance to buy into high quality Jerseys but the ultimate kicker being the vast majority of the group purchased, were from cow families that were established on the very farm that Troy and Leanne now own.
Troy, Leanne and their children Jaxon, Ashden, Hunter and Zara, are the sixth and latest generation of the Smethurst family to farm on the Lang Lang River valley property at Athlone. Over the past 15 years they have worked their way through purchasing the property and the herd that Troy’s parents, Daryl and Jenny, and grandparents, Peter and Gladys had developed. Part of the property being the former home of Lang Park Jerseys as previously mentioned above which was purchased by Troy’s grandfather Peter.
To go along with the dairy farm, after leaving school Troy earnt his qualifications in the plumbing trade and successfully operates his own plumbing business until this day.
Great uncle Jim Smethurst actively encouraged the younger Troy to participate in calf days, youth shows and to purchase and breed from high quality stock. Troy has invested in a number of well-bred stud Holsteins with success coming in On Farm Competitions as well as at International Dairy Week. A few Jerseys have been purchased from local studs as well as a handful of Brown Swiss and one Illawarra.
However, the purchase of 38 head in total from both the Lerida Park Jerseys herd dispersal and first heifer sale, is a significant investment in the Jersey breed. All bar one of these cows are members of cow families originating at Lang Park. Success with these cows has already started, with placings in the Central Gippsland On Farm Challenge, as well as Lerida Park Raceway Sabina (pictured right) placing 2nd in the Senior 3yo in milk class at IDW 2025.
Troy and Leanne are planning for the future, with the recent purchase of a dairy farm directly over the river from the home property which they have previously leased for the past few years. Ultimately, this is hoped to be a mostly Jersey herd with the Holsteins remaining at the home property. It is believed that Zara is extremely keen on the Jerseys and has big plans for them. We hope as she gets older, she gets to realise them.
The Central Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club are delighted to welcome a new generation of the Smethurst family back into the club and wish them every success for the future.

Over five generations of farming on the Atherton Tablelands in far north Queensland, the Bevan family has mixed things up along the way.
Today Henry Bevan with his wife, Anna, and children Baylee, Keaton and Kendall, has the Bevandale herd at a roughly 50-50 mix of Holsteins and Jerseys but the composition has changed over time.
“When Dad took over the farm from his father, he crossed all the Jerseys to Holstein and bred a Master Breeder Holstein herd,” Henry said. “Now I’m bringing the Jerseys back.”
Jerseys were reintroduced to the 230ha farm about four years ago for their overall ease of management, health traits and fertility.
At the time, Henry aimed for a 50-50 split but now that has been achieved, he wants to progress to 75-25 in favour of Jerseys.
“There is a balance to be had,” he says. “The Holsteins provide higher litres but from a management, fertility and efficiency perspective, you can’t beat a Jersey cow.”
Their journey into Jerseys started with a spur of the moment decision to drive 1,400kms to Monto to look at a freshly calved two-year-old heifer, Slam Carrier Laney. “While we were there, we spotted a 10-month-old heifer, Slam Hired Jane. These two rapidly developed cow families that influenced our venture further into the breed.”
Over the past four years they purchased a line of commercially bred heifers and also 50 head from the well-respected Long Lanes herd.
Some stars of the Jersey herd today include Bevandale Matt Jane 3 EX90, Long Lanes Topsy Rosemary EX93 and Bevandale Ferdinand Lane VG87.
As for the Holsteins, the Wyoming Meg and Sally families have been long-time high achievers in the herd with Bevandale Breeza Meg EX90 3E being the first 8th generation Excellent Holstein in Australia and Bevandale Unstopabull Sally-Red being the highlight of the Holstein portion of the herd.
Over recent years they have moved to a split calving herd but Henry doesn’t plan to go back to being a one-breed farmer, though if he did it would be Jersey.
The farm isn’t pushing for high litres. “With our tropical climate, it’s more about getting the animals to be efficient,” Henry says.
The cows are fed a PMR ration on a feed pad which is used across nine months of the year. Most of the feed is home grown, supplemented by some grain and whole cotton seed.
The Bevandale prefix is used for both Holstein and Jersey studs.
While Henry’s herd has shifted more towards Jerseys, he’s happy to see both breeds combining into one journal.
“More people are milking both breeds,” he adds.
As Australia’s only dual Master Breeders, brothers Graeme and Rohan Sprunt fully appreciate the benefits of both Jerseys and Holsteins.
The Sprunt family’s Kaarmona Holsteins achieved Master Breeder status in 2018 and Kaarmona Jerseys followed in 2023, one of Jersey Australia’s inaugural Master Breeders.
The family farm at Kaarimba in Northern Victoria was settled in 1874 and Graeme and Rohan are the fourth generation on the land.
Kaarmona was started in 1965 by Rohan and Graeme’s parents John and Jennifer. Rohan and Graeme leased the farm from their mother in 1994 to start their business venture and later bought the property in 2000.
In 1994, they started with 100 cows, including more than 70 newly purchased Holsteins which were the easiest breed to buy at the time. Now the herd will have 470 to calve by the end of spring with only 100 Holsteins.
More Holsteins will be sold later this year as the brothers revert to a predominantly Jersey herd as part of a strategy towards retirement.
They have been milking off a 133-hectare dairy platform and have more than doubled the milking herd over the past two decades with only a slight increase in land.
Rohan said the mixed herd did a good job of having milk mixed in the vat, but their bigger picture goal was to develop highquality cows. “We were able to maximise the genetics by having the two breeds pure; that’s why we did it,” he said.
The Jerseys contribute components and are good for their heat tolerance, fertility and efficiency on the farm. They have focussed on improving Holstein health traits and fertility and added more production volume over recent years. Their hoof health has also been a bonus with the cows needing to walk up to five kilometres per day.
“There have certainly been advantages to both breeds, but we find the Jerseys work best for our farm,” Rohan said.
Whichever breed, Rohan and Graeme aim to breed strong, efficient cows with good udders
They still have descendants of at least one cow family - Arkona – that their father won the World Conference Champion Cow at Tatura in 1976.
Presented in career best form, the 7-year-old Byrne Lea Octane Buttersnap EX-91-2E 1xM 1xF 1xP, exhibited by the Wishart family of Rowlands Park Holsteins, overpowered the competition to claim the title of Supreme Holstein at the 2025 NHD Victorian Winter Fair in July.
Rick and Tina Wishart milk 350 registered Holsteins on their property at Mead in north west Victoria. Their daughters Emmalea, Kaitlyn and April are also actively involved in the business, and are the driving force behind their showring success.
The Wisharts bought Buttersnap in 2021 as a pregnant 2-year-old at the dispersal sale of Craig and Fiona Fisher of Byrne Lea Holsteins.
For the past four years, Buttersnap has been a prominent member of the Rowlands Park show team, and in April 2024, she was crowned Supreme Dairy Cow at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show.
However, Emmalea Wishart insists Buttersnap’s Winter Fair title is their most memorable to-date, having exhibited there every year since the event’s inception 11 years ago.
“You dream about these moments because they are so few and far between,” Emmalea said. “It’s not like you can ever go to the Winter Fair thinking you’re going to win. There are always so many great cows hereso a win like this is pretty special.”
Emmalea says working with cows like Buttersnap reminds her why she loves the early mornings and long days of dairy farming.
“Dairy farming can be hard work – but it’s beautiful cows like Buttersnap that are the reward,” she said. “She’s an aggressive cow and always bossing everyone at the feed and making plenty of milk. She is an easy cow to work with and really enjoys showing. We couldn’t ask any more from her.”
Judging the Fair was renowned judge and breeder Lisa McKay from western Victoria, alongside associate judge Emily Robins.
In selecting Buttersnap as their Senior Champion, Lisa said it was the extra capacity and spring of her rib structure, her superior dairy strength and youthful mammary system that pushed Buttersnap to the top.
“I like modern frames, and I like really good udders that are well attached and up in the cow,” Lisa said. “I like immaturity in cows, and I like to see cows that develop as they get older.”
“My Champion has a really great udder – but when you get to her frame, the senior cow is a complete package. She’s wide, she’s angular and she’s dairy.”
Lisa said it was the extra depth of frame and eye-catching femininity that gave Buttersnap an advantage over the Reserve Senior cow, Gorbro Sidekick Repa EX-92-1E 1xM 1xF 1xP, exhibited by the Gordon family of Gorbro Holsteins.
The 4-year-old also won Senior Best Udder, with Repa showing more height and width to her rear udder and superior udder texture over the Honourable Mention, Winwood Tatoo Lightsout EX-90-2E 1xP, exhibited by Kelly Bleijendaal and Mal Nikora.
Friends pool together to uncover a Champion
A band of close friends swept the Intermediate in-milk section when their junior 2-year-old entry, View Fort Hano Pure VG85 was named Champion and Best Udder for the intermediate show.
The partnership of Kelly Bleijendaal, Mal Nikora, Daniel Bacon, Kelsi Barclay, Simon and Hannah Tognola and Willliam Dudfield bought Pure in November 2024 as a dry heifer at the “View Fort Victories Sale” of Matthew and Nicola Templeton. Sired by Siemers DJ Hano, Pure stems from the same cow family as the incomparable two-time World Dairy Expo Champion, VanDyk-K Integrity Paradise EX-96-2E.
Speaking for the group, Kelly said their syndicate came together to support the Templetons sale. After a few drinks and a chat, they decided to pool their money together in the hopes of buying something that was “a bit fresh and a bit new” that they could have some fun with at the shows.
“Pure stood out because she was structurally correct and had great length to her frame,” Kelly said. “We thought she had the makings of a really nice cow – and she’s done exactly that.”
As the first intermediate exhibit to enter the ring – Pure made an immediate impression on the judges.
“She set the scene for the rest of the show – and we didn’t see a better young cow for the rest of the intermediate section,” Lisa said.
As a self-proclaimed “udder person”, Lisa said she likes to see immaturity and snugness on young cows, along with very high and wide rear attachments.
“I made this cow Best Intermediate Udder, so I think it was the next step to make her my champion,” Lisa said. “She’s a young cow that has that width, she has that openness to her rib, and she has that style that I look for in young cows.”
It was the additional depth and spring to her rear rib, her slope from hip to pin, and superior udder quality that placed Pure ahead of the Reserve Intermediate, Eastview Jagger Bonnie VG87, exhibited by the Ashen Plains Holsteins and Profit-a-Bull Genetics partnership.
The Senior 3-year-old Peak Jagger daughter displayed more depth of rib and balance throughout than fellow Jagger daughter and second placed Senior 3-year-old, Gorbro Jagger Shimmer VG88, exhibited by the Gordon family.
Unstopabull Red and White Champions
A third generation Excellent, Gorbro Riverdown Asia-IMP-ET-RED EX90 -1E, exhibited by the Gordon family of Cohuna in north west Victoria, claimed the Senior title in the Red and White Holstein Show.
The 4-year-old sired by Riverdown Unstopabull-RED is a granddaughter of the three-time Global Red and White Cow of the Year, Luck-E Advent Asia-ET EX-94-2E.
Her barn mate and ET full sister, Gorbro Unstopabull Admire-IMP-ETRED EX-91-2E stood below her as Honourable Mention, separated by yet another Unstopabull daughter in Gorgala Unstopabull Tiffany-RED EX-90-1E
as Reserve, exhibited by Chad & Kristin Gordon of Gorgala Holsteins, Tongala.
In a close placing, Lisa said Asia had the advantage ahead of Tiffany for her superior dairy strength, angularity and udder quality.
“My first cow is a little more open and capacious of her rear rib,” she said of her champion. “She’s a little higher of her rear udder, and shows a little more uphill run and style through her front end than the cow in Reserve.”
Lisa then placed Tiffany over Admire saying she was cleaner through her brisket, and softer through her hide than the Honourable Mention.
Intermediate red and high of the highest Kalibre
Despite the smaller offering in the Intermediate Red and White Show, the standard remained elite with the 2-year-old Elm Banks Warrior Okabargo-RED VG85 claiming the Champion title.
Exhibited by Scott and Pip Robinson of Eastview Holsteins, Okabargo boasts an enviable pedigree backed by two Excellent dams to the multi-European and World Champion, Decrausaz Iron O'Kalibra EX-97.
Historic pedigree makes an impression in the Junior Show
In the junior show, it was the yearling heifer Impression Jealous OfMy Latenite 269-IMP-ET-RED winning Junior Champion of both the red and white and open section. She was exhibited by the partnership of Mitch and Lyndsey Flemming, Callum Moscript and Matt Senecal.
Her pedigree features a staggering eight generations of EX-94/95, via the famous Trina family of Wilsondale Farms, Maine USA, tracing back to the 1800s to one of the first black and white cows imported into the USA from the Netherlands.
Mitch Flemming of Impression Holsteins, Maffra, said while it was exciting to own an animal steeped in such a rich history, he was also excited to own such a great individual in her own right.
“It’s important for us to breed and exhibit cattle that have commercial relevance that can add value to the wider industry,” he said. “Having a pedigree that’s full of Excellent cows with proven longevity is important commercially – but we also have a heifer that’s made beautifully that has the potential to make a really good ‘everyday cow’ in the future.”
When judging the junior show, Lisa said she was looking for youthfulness and style, openness of frame, femininity, dairyness, and heifers that moved freely and comfortably on a correct set of legs.
She said her champion was at the right stage of development for her age, showing adequate maturity with openness and depth of rib, a desirable slope from hip to pin, and a near “faultless” frame.
“She blends a little nicer through the shoulder and the neck, and tracks a little more freely and a little straighter on her rear legs than the reserve,” she said.

The 2025 Semex-Holstein Australia All-Australian Photographic Competition has drawn record interest from breeders across the country, with the highest number of entries in seven years and a standard of quality that left judges both impressed and challenged.
This year’s judging panel; Andrew Koch (Glenunga, SA), Daniel Holmes (Arabella, QLD) and Ricky Nelson (RJS, VIC) - came together at Dairy House in Melbourne to assess the entries, spending a day carefully reviewing, debating and ultimately selecting the finalists in each class.
In total, 190 photographs were entered, making this the largest All-Australian competition since 2018 and comfortably surpassing pre-COVID levels.
The entries came from 62 individual exhibitors, a notable rise from the 44 who competed in 2024. Four classes - the 6 years & over, 4-year-old, 3-year-old, and Senior Yearling Dry (over 15 months) - all attracted between 20 and 30 entries, while the Senior Yearling Dry (under 15 months) proved the largest class, with 44 entries alone.
Judge Andrew Koch described the experience as both an honour and a privilege. “We saw a rise in overall entries which totalled 190, the highest number of entries since 2018. The quality of the animals presented was again tremendous, with the winners exemplifying the great Australian Holsteins that we all as breeders are striving to breed.”
His fellow judge Daniel Holmes echoed those sentiments, highlighting the depth of talent across all four classes: “The consistency right through the competition makes our jobs very challenging. The cows were exceptional and narrowing them down to the finalists required a lot of discussion and consideration.”
For Ricky Nelson, the opportunity to judge the AllAustralian was equally rewarding. “The standard of entries reflects just how strong the Holstein breed is in Australia today. Congratulations to all of the finalists and thank you to Holstein Australia for continuing to run such a significant event for our industry.”
The Holstein Australia/Semex All - Australian Competition is a national photography competition recognising excellence in conformation and showing. It is open to all Holstein Australia Herdbook and Appendix 1, 2 and 3 females that have been successfully shown at nominated shows throughout Australia each year. The three-member judging panel selects both the finalists and the top three places in each class.
Thank you to the photographers who have worked with members to provide images for the competition this year and in previous years, notably Bradley Cullen, Andrew Cullen, Dean Malcolm, Luke Gardiner, Simon Tognola & Mike Hentschke.
The combination of a record entry pool, heightened competition and outstanding quality has ensured the 2025 All-Australian Photographic Competition is one of the strongest in its history. With results eagerly anticipated, the finalists once again underline the dedication of Holstein breeders nationwide.

Shane’s life was defined by his unwavering devotion to his family, farming, and the Jersey cow. Working alongside Stan and Maureen, Shane developed a love for dairying and showing- a passion that would shape his life and career.
Shane was truly at home in the show ring. Over the decades, he and his family achieved remarkable success, beginning with their first Brisbane Royal Supreme Champion in 1975 with Opals Rowena to countless champions spanning across Queensland and beyond. Among his proudest achievements was leading his much-loved Adadale Silver Carol, Ex 94, to Supreme Champion at the Brisbane Royal Show in 1988 – a moment he treasured and often recalled with great pride.
But Shane’s passion went far beyond ribbons and trophies. He was committed to the future of the Jersey breed, serving on the Jersey Australia board and as President of Jersey Queensland. He was a
respected judge at major shows throughout the country, generously sharing his time, knowledge, and encouragement with fellow breeders and the next generation of cattlemen and women. His enduring love for the Jersey cow – past, present, and future – was at the heart of all he did.
Shane was also known as a strong advocate for farmers and his beloved industry. He never hesitated to stand up for what he believed in. Shane was respected for his principles, his courage and his willingness to say what needed to be said, even when it was difficult.
To us though, Shane was simply our rock. He was a devoted husband to Sharyn, a proud father to Lachlan, Nicola and Julia, and a loving grandfather. He was happiest when surrounded by those he loved, whether on the farm, in the show ring, or within his community. His humour, generosity, and quiet strength left an indelible mark on all who knew him, and the values he lived by will remain with us always.
We are deeply grateful for the many tributes that have been shared, reflecting the respect and affection Shane earned throughout the Jersey and wider dairy community. His legacy lives on in the Adadale herd, in the industry he worked so hard to protect and promote, and most of all, in the family who loved him dearly.
With love and pride,
Sharyn , Lachlan, Nicola, Julia and families.

PAZZLE is a newly daughter proven sire, and a son of the global cow of the year winner Siemers Lambda Paris EX91. He is a Rozline brother to high farmer satisfaction sire and global sire of sons PARFECT. Early PAZZLE milking daughters are typical of his proof, displaying an abundance of balance throughout. His daughters also have great strength, body depth and openness of rib. This is also evident in his linear as these three traits are all higher than his stature, truly a rare combination especially for a high type sire. PAZZLE daughters are also predominately black and have outstanding udders. Rear teat placement is near perfect with high and wide rear udders and strongly attached fore udders. He has also been used as a sire of sons, producing HALIANT-P & CAPSIZE both of whom you will find in our Australian line up. Australian farmers are really impressed with their PAZZLE calves and are turning to him again in their mating program. A sire that will meet many different farmers breeding objectives.
SHEEPSTER is another newly daughter proven sire who has gone straight to number two on the TPI chart at 3458. His first milking daughters display all the traits farmers love, perfect teat placement along with adding teat length which gives him the RobotPRO designation. Balanced cows that are perfect in stature and walk around the barn with ease. This leads to his great production with over 1300 pounds of milk and 113 pounds of fat at 0.21% he is siring daughters that will be profitable for a very long time. Along with his high TPI he is also great on HHP$ at 1077 and this is also evident in his sons in our line-up. His sons featuring in our Australian lineup starting with the popular TUBMAN +1704 milk & 2.0 CCR, DAY TRIP 1048 HHP$ & 1.9 CCR, SCORPIUS 1223 HHP$ and a polled son in SOETEBIER-P 2.5 CCR. SHEEPSTER has clearly passed on his high fertility to his sons. Health traits are a strong point with him with nearly 5 on productive life and very respectable on Zoetis wellness traits, such as Metritis 105, Ketosis 103, Cystic Ovary 103 and Calf respiratory disease 104. Positive management traits that will make life easier on the farm. SHEEPSTER also has a strong maternal line with his dam classified excellent she now makes up 10 generations of Excellent & Very Good. With a pedigree stacked full of great sires of the past like Aerostar, BW Marshall, Potter, Supersire and Delta it’s no surprise how well he transmits.
KAMAKAZI milking daughters continue to impress across the world. He is building a name for himself by siring daughters that have great mammary systems, with particular emphasis on correct rear teat placement while adding teat length. Their strength and width impress, and this reflects in their production. At close to one thousand pounds of milk, expect big records from his daughters. Combine this with his high JUI of 19.2 and you will have cows that produce big lactations for a long time. All reports indicate his progeny to be aggressive eaters and easy to rear which simulates his zoetis calf liveability at 108. Another highlight is his ability to get cows pregnant with his high SCR staying solid at 1.1.
A new jersey sire to our line up ODESZA, is an extremely high milk bull at +1232 pounds of milk, also with a high Combined Fat & Protein of 85. “Odesza is backed by six generations of EX dams that have extreme yield deviation in the Master Breeder herd of Wickstrom Jersey Farms of Hilmar, CA. Expect Odesza to deliver high flow and CFP from extremely functional super uddered cows that last and perform!” Herby Lutz, Select Sires. With breed leading teat length +1.5 and correct rear teat placement he is the ideal sire to use over Casino, Matt, Broadway & Impeccable bloodlines. Qualifying for the RobotPRO logo. For such a high production sire his health traits are also reputable with +4.5 productive life, high mastitis and lameness resistance while also having high zoetis calf liveability of 109.
Moving locally now and our first acquired Jersey bull Brookbora BERT continues to do all the right things. Excitement is building as his first calves are due to hit the ground very soon. We are hearing great feedback from farmers about his semen fertility in both conventional and sexed semen. He still sits at the pointy end of the breed with his high mammary score of 116 and overall type of 112. Combine this with his daughter fertility of 105 and you truly have a rare bull. BERTS closest four dams are all scored excellent, and we expect a great deal of his daughters to follow the same course, given height & width of udders are both 109, proving evidence that his daughter rear udders should be a highlight.

We have our replacements covered. What to do with the other 75%.
With spring joining fast approaching, many farmers will be considering which dairy bulls to use to fill the tank. With annual dairy replacement rates typically only sitting around 25% in most dairy herds, the question of what to do with surplus calves remains an annual management challenge for all dairy farms.
Australia’s 1.2 million dairy cows produce a huge number of calves each year - yet only about 300,000 of these are kept as replacements. That leaves roughly 900,000 surplus calves to be managed.
Breeding to supply the export heifer market is one option. However, with exports still slowly recovering after a couple of low years, it’s far from a complete solution. Even in the best years, dairy heifer exports only accounted for around 120,000 headstill leaving between 700,000 and 800,000 surplus calves on farms.
This is where Dairy Beef can be part of your annual breeding strategy. Using beef sires over the bottom end of your herd or on late-calving cows creates additional market options. While returns can be limited during low beef price periods, this approach can still play a valuable role in adding value to calves that would otherwise have limited market potential other than the bobby calf market.
When selecting beef bulls for your program, it’s important to consider the traits that will deliver the best results in a Holstein
CSCBRADY from Central Sires Co-op retains the No. 1 ranking on the Good Bulls Guide list with a BPI of 445, followed closely by Viking bull GISLEV on 433. Pleasingly, both bulls have reported stable BPIs compared with the previous run.
It is also terrific to see Semex return to the Australian domestic Jersey bull market with the release of 0200JE08194 (Miami Songstar) this spring. Miami Songstar debuts with a BPI of 414, backed by excellent Daughter Fertility (111), positive components, strong workabilities, and solid type and mammary traits. He is a sire that offers breeders the opportunity to significantly lift Fertility without compromising on key areas of performance.
STARLORD, from Worldwide Sires, is another bull gaining momentum, particularly as a sire of sons and daughters. His influence is already being seen in the Daughter Fertility space, with a number of his young sons entering AI this spring carrying strong Fertility ABVs.
TOP HERDS
The White Star Jersey herd of C Glennen & Co has returned to the No. 1 herd position, recording a herd BPI average of 281 from 365 current cows - an increase of 9 points since April.
In second place, Bryan & Jo Dickson’s Emu Banks Jersey herd holds a herd average of 273 from 61 cows, easing back 6 BPI points from April.
The Top Young Heifer for the August run is BEULAH STAR D FAIRY 2 -TWIN, with a BPI of 417. This Starlord daughter, owned by Daryl and Lani Hoey, narrowly leads ahead of MURRAY BROOK SILVERMINE 5882, with a BPI of 414 from the Murray Brook stud of Paul, Lynette and Adam Lenehan.
On the cow list, ARALUEN PARK JIGGY SANDRA takes top honours with a standout BPI of 550. Classified EX90 in her second lactation, the four-year-old Jiggy Sandra is owned by Trevor Saunders and Anthea Day.
There are growing concerns with Jersey bull proofs, with a number of bulls showing significant fluctuations in BPI values from run to run over very short periods. These movements - both upwards and downwards - have raised questions about stability and confidence.
An urgent review request has been lodged with DataGene, which management has acknowledged and escalated to the DataGene Board.
Maintaining trust and confidence in proofs is essential to give breeders the certainty they need to invest in their breeding programs. Jersey Australia will continue to strongly pursue this matter with DataGene on behalf of members.
Bulls must be positive for Fat & Protein, Milk, Overall Type, Mammary and Daughter Fertility For the full ABV list visit www.datavat.com.au. Bulls must be active and (g) tested on NASIS
Australia’s top-selling polled Holstein bull has surged up the national rankings, driven by standout performances from his daughters in herds across the country.
This achievement comes as ABS Global claims the top five Holstein polled genomic bulls in the country – and six of the top 10 – in the latest Australian Breeding Values (ABV) release.
ABS Global Australian Business Operations Manager Bruce Ronalds said strong local demand for bulls that “tick all the boxes” has shaped ABS’ strategic matings, delivering a new generation of high-performing polled sires.
“We have four polled bulls over 500 Balanced Performance Index (BPI), so there’s no excuse for not having polled,” he said.
“There’s no compromise on profit, production or health traits, while reducing the cost of disbudding.”
Mr Ronalds said new sires Denovo 23176 HIGHFERT-PP-ET and Denovo 21598 HAYWARD-PP were the result of targeted breeding for the Australian market.
“ABS identified a high-ranking genomic overseas cow, strategically mated her to the highest polled bull ESTATE PP and we got exactly what we needed – and most importantly –what the industry wanted,” he said.
ELLIS-PP, at 485 BPI and 61 daughters across eight milking herds, was the original polled Holstein to deliver the complete breeding package. Excelling in Daughter Fertility, Production and Health. Now, with an additional 34 BPI points and a lift to 115 in Daughter Fertility, the arrival of milking daughter data is confirming his genomic predictions and delivering profit on-farm.
The next generation of polled genetics, HIGHFERT PP at 539 BPI and HAYWARD PP at 522 BPI are full brothers sired by DENOVO 4798 ESTATE-PP-ET at 528 BPI, but unlike ESTATE-PP, HIGHFERT and HAYWARD are A2 carriers and offer elite daughter fertility.
WARATAH OBERON- P - the Gippsland-bred son of ELLIS PP - has risen to number four on the ABV genomic ranking at 574 BPI, adding important gains in Survival, Daughter Fertility and Mastitis Resistance.
High Daughter Fertility sire CHAD PP at BPI 518 rounds out the top performers and continues to add daughters to his Australian proof.
In the proven space, farmer favourite ABS JERONIMO P still hold strong in the top 4 Australian proven sires at 457 BPI and has never dropped out of the top 5 since becoming proven in Aug 2021. Hoogerhorst Dg Oh RUBLES RED is still the number one Australian proven for type and is now number 6 Australian proven.
The Locally-bred and farmer favourite bull Kaarmona Jeronimo BRADY (CSCBRADY) continues his dominance of the Australian Breeding Values genomic Jersey rankings, maintaining his position at number one after 18 months.
At 445 Balanced Performance Index (BPI) he hasn’t changed, despite many bulls around him shifting positions and even disappearing.
ABS Global Australian Business Operations Manager Bruce Ronalds said BRADY’s consistency was a testament to the bull, cow families and his pedigree.
“He’s a consistent bull and that suits the Australian market,” he said. “That’s why we – ABS in partnership with Central Sires Co-Op - chased him so hard, he’s positive for components, high survival, elite type and udders but when it all boils down, he continues to hold his place and that’s crucial.”
Balnageith JANGO P (CSCJANGO P) has started adding daughters into Australian herds and at 386 BPI, he’s the number two polled genomic Jersey bull in the country.
With 10 daughters across three herds, he’s demonstrating why farmers select him to breed for Survival, Production, Polled and A2.
New, Western Victorian- bred bull Miami HEATHSTAR (CSCHEATHSTAR) at 333 BPI is becoming a favourite for farmers wanting to improve health traits and is a huge 107 for Daughter Fertility.
Global Jersey bull Cal-Mart JAMMER is the new number 1 JPI proven sire and also has increased to 385 BPI after adding daughters locally and overseas. High for milk and components - unique for the Jersey breed - he also covers many bases at 108 Mastitis Resistance and 103 Daughter Fertility. Used heavily as a 'sire of sons' for overseas ABS markets, JAMMER provides some outcross for the Australian market as he doesn’t have any VALENTINO in his pedigree.

Our approach has always been and will always be, help our customers create cows that suit the conditions they farm in, and as we know this is vastly different across our great country! The one thing that remains the same, moderate framed cows with strength, great udders, but the cow must be healthy and fertile to give her the ability to express the production genetic potential. This approach has proven extremely successful for our customers and rewarded them with high genetic merit herds, if looking at either local Australian indexes or overseas based indexes. In August 6 of the top 15 bulls on the Balance BPI GBG list call WWS home HAYK +567, HEATWAVE +566, RODNEY +562, HANDLEIT +588, BLUE VERVAIN +554 & PARJET +553, with another recent new release not on the list ROXABELL coming in at +562 BPI a high solids Sundance son with semen expected to arrive in November.
Leading the list is HAYK who has recently died and his last semen will be dispatched this month, he has created a legacy of making cows with strength and performance, he has some very notable daughters around the globe that will no doubt continue this legacy. His sons are not to be outdone, with RODNEY +562, PROVEN FULL +514, HADES +509 & high semen fertility sire DRYDON +481 BPI.
RODNEY who is also our highest Sustainability sire, who is also the #2 milk sire in the top 10 BPI bulls, has been extremely popular this year, his well rounded proof solid across all key areas on production health and fertility has been his strength.
SUNDANCE +488 BPI a recently released from NxGen sire is the other sire of sons that has a large impact on our elite BPI sires, HEATWAVE +566, ROXABELL* +562, HANDLEIT +558 NxGen), LEDGER* +538(NxGen), GLENORA +523, BONAPPETIT* +499(NxGen), TIKI* +484, DANN +467, BLACKROCK +464(NxGen), * denotes sires not currently registered on NASIS. SUNDANCE not only has the ability to create high BPI progeny, BONAPETIT and BLACKROCK are over +3400 TPI, HANDEIT & LEDGER over +3380 TPI while DANN is over +2.00 PTAT.
HEATWAVE is a higher volume bull but still very high components, #11 SI sire and the highest Daughter Fertility sire in the top 10 BPI sires.
HANDLEIT is a rare bull who dominates across all indexes in Australia and globally, with plenty of use as a sire of sons, he might be the one to create the next generation.
GLENORA is from a Frost Bite dam back to a Conway who brings even more milk volume but impeccable teat length and placement ideal for robot herds.
Contact your local WWS representative about any of the above bulls.
As we look forward to another spring breeding season, we are proud of our continued strong standing with the latest Holstein August proof releases both Aust and USA.

WHEN a cow with a deep, long-lasting pedigree and high components walked through a Gippsland sale ring three years ago
Mark and Philippa Flemming couldn’t resist buying her. The couple from Western Victoria rarely buy cattle for their family’s Miami Jerseys, which just celebrated 70 years of breeding in 2024 - but this time was an exception. “She had a solid cow family and the cow herself - Araluen Park Navarian Heather 2, went on to be classified excellent 90 points after we bought her, so that made five generations of excellent cows and that’s just based on her type,” Mark said. “They are a really long-lasting cow family. Generations and generations had milked for seven, eight, nine and 10 lactations. There’s one there - four generations back - that milked for 11 lactations.”
Back in Western Victoria, it made sense for Mark and Philippa, who farm with their son Brenton, to combine the longevity traits of this unique cow family with the credentials of the highest fertility bull at the time, STARLORD. The result - the new ABS outcross sire MIAMI HEATHSTAR (CSCHEATHSTAR) - a bull with high fertility, positive milk flow, high-wide rear udders, strong centre ligament and high survivability - positioned on the new August proof run as the number 16 Health Weighted Index sire.
Mark said these traits are sought after by commercial farmers, and while they all contribute to a farm businesses’ bottom linelongevity is especially vital for profitability.
“The longer that a cow is productive in your herd, she’s making you money,” he said.
“You only have to rear her once; it’s a big cost to rear an animal and calve her down as a two-year-old. The more productive lactations you can get out of a cow, she's more profitable.”
Breeding bulls for artificial insemination is nothing new for Mark and Philippa, and their families - Philippa’s parents Ron (dec) and Glenyss Baker had Glenarron Jerseys, while Mark’s parents John and Gwen operated Miami Jerseys until 2007.
Mark and Philippa’s eldest son Mitchell and his wife Lyndsey also farm and work in the herd improvement sector and show cattle at the best shows in Australia.
Contributing to the national genetic pool is something the Flemmings have done for both Jerseys and Holsteins, for many years. Mark and Philippa were part of the original Ginfo project 20 years ago, which meant their herd contributed data to the national reference herd for genetic information, now used by Datavat.
Genomics is a huge part of Mark and Philippa’s business. The Balanced Performance Index (BPI) is used as a guide for breeding decisions, but there’s also other considerations. The couple also assess type, balance and cow families in their breeding decisions and individually mate each of their 300 head herd. With over 1,200 animals genomically tested, the Flemmings have one of the highest rates of genomic testing uptake in the country - especially considering the size of their herd. Their herd currently sits at 29 on the BPI rankings and they’ve bred a cow that hit the top five a couple of runs ago.
Mark said the DNA genomic technology has helped them concentrate further on fertility - a trait that’s not understandable without a genomic test.
So, it was no surprise that the positive fertility of Araluen Park Navarian Heather 2 EX-90 was one of the appeals of the threeyear-old at the time, and when combined with Starlord - the joining made sense for their herd goals.
“She (Araluen Park Navarian Heather 2 EX-90) has five of six generations (including her at 104) behind her, that were positive for fertility,” Mark said. “The one (that wasn’t) was 99 and all the others were over 100. We didn’t expect to breed a bull that would go into AI out of her, we just thought we'd be breeding females. Starlord transmits high fertility and good type and the combination - when Heathstar was genomically tested he came up good enough to offer him to Central Sires Cooperative.” Central Sires Cooperative have a partnership for sourcing local Australian bulls.
ABS Australia Business Operations Manager Bruce Ronalds said CSCHEATHSTAR made sense for the Australian market.
“He’s got huge commercial appeal as one of breed leading daughter fertility bulls in industry at 108,” he said.
“The Jersey industry has struggled for many years to find high daughter fertility bulls and then to add the strength of the cow family, his type and the fact he’s an outcross - we are expecting strong interest in him.”
Gippsland breeders Anthea Day and Trevor Saunders bred CSCHEATHSTAR’S dam, Araluen Park Navarian Heather 2 EX-90. Her cow family has a special place in Anthea’s heart. “The first registered animal that I ever owned was Kooroo Heather 18, she was my first 90-point cow, and she goes back to Gordon Lawson from Koorooman,” she said.
“ (Araluen Park Navarian Heather 2 EX-90) Great grandmother, Heather 38 was 14.5 when she calved her last calf - there’s good fertility, longevity, type and temperament in this line. Heather 38 was a Barber, she’d come towards you as if she was going to swallow you with her mouth - her massive muzzle - and she’s like a snuggle. Temperament was always good with their Heathers.” Anthea and Trevor have two daughters from Araluen Park
Navarian Heather 2 EX-90 in their 700 cow herd and Heathstar’s sister by Sturgess.
The latter animal has just been classified excellent as a second-calver, representing the sixth generation of EX-classified animals from this cow family - and something Anthea is incredibly proud of.
She said her and Trevor get “get excited” when their cows are purchased by other farmers and go onto huge things within the industry.
“Mark and Philippa chose the cow and the joining, with a bull that ticked all the boxes and then bred a bull that got picked to go into AI service,” she said.
“That makes Trev and I feel great.”
Breeders can expect significant re-ranking of animals in DataGene’s December release of Australian Breeding Values (ABVs) as a result of implementing the updated National Breeding Objective and a new model for the Survival ABV. In the December ABV release, DataGene will also implement a new model for the Survival ABV and changes to the expression of type traits with intermediate optimums.
The National Breeding Objective is updated every five years to enable farmers to breed herds that meet the future needs of the Australian dairy industry. This update follows more than a year of consultation with industry, market analysis and scientific investigation. The updated National Breeding Objective involves three key changes:
1. Updating pricing for milk components and inputs.
2. Enhanced Health Weighted Index
3. Updated base
The updated pricing for milking components and inputs will apply to all indices and all breeds. From December, forecast prices will be used, instead of historical average prices which were used previously. Feed costs will also be updated but the ratio of feed costs to milk price will remain as it is currently. However, the protein to fat ratio will be moved from 2:1 to close to 1:1, to better reflect forecast milk pricing models and global trends
The Health Weighted Index (HWI) will include the calving ease and gestation length to better reflect the needs of seasonal herds with pasture-based systems. Compared to the current HWI, the expected response to selection depends on the breed:
• Holstein: faster genetic gain for fat, protein, survival, cell count, calving ease and gestation length; and similar gain for fertility.
• Jersey: faster genetic gain for fat, fertility, gestation length, cell count and mastitis resistance.
The base (‘average’ animals used for breeding values) will be updated in December and then every 5 years. This brings Australia in line with international best practice (Interbull). The base change will result in changes in the numerical value of all ABVs but animal rankings will not be affected by changing the base.
Combined, these changes will result in re-ranking of animals on all three indices – Balanced Performance Index (BPI), Health Weighted Index (HWI) and Sustainability Index. Re-ranking is also expected for Survival ABV.
From December, DataGene will use a new model will be used to calculate the Survival ABV. Previously, the Survival ABV was a prediction of the probability of survival from year to year. The new model is based on a combination of survival from the end of the first lactation and survival in subsequent lactations. Overall, it gives better predictions of an animal’s productive lifetime. Some reranking of animals will occur with the implementation of the new model, with older animals in particular likely to benefit.
From December, DataGene will change the way it expresses type traits with intermediate optimums. For these traits, more is not necessarily better. The optimum is an intermediate score. Take for example rear teat placement, which affects the ease of cup attachment in the milking shed. Cups are difficult to attach if rear teats are too close or too wide – the optimum position is intermediate. A bull with a Rear Teat Placement ABV of 100 is breed average. But breed average doesn’t necessarily represent the intermediate optimum. From December, DataGene will express the six traits with intermediate optimums (see box). There won’t be any changes to the way these ABVs are calculated. DataGene is simply changing the way it expresses these traits to make it easier for breeders to recognise animals that are close to the intermediate optimum.
Traits expressed with intermediate optimums
• Pin Set
• Rear Set
• Udder Depth
• Teat Placement Fore
• Teat Placement Rear
• Bone Quality
The change will involve the addition of a letter indicating if the breeding value is in the optimum range (O) or an alternative letter indicating the trait direction. The following example shows how Udder Depth ABV will be expressed in Holsteins:
• 95 D (indicates deep)
100 0 (indicates optimum)
• 110 S (indicates shallow)

The event was held on the 24th of May after a week of flooding rains in the Hunter Valley and Mid North Coast. It was a big decision to push ahead but the show went on and the day turned out to be beautifully sunny.
Myles Carrigan from Tamworth NSW won Champion Parader. The Hassett family took out the All Australian Holstein class with Halewood Actionman Poetry, paraded by Sophie Jansen.
A highlight of the day was the dress-up class which the kids and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed. Braxton Brown claimed the win with his Bee Keeper costume.
