2025 WORLD JERSEY CONFERENCE

PRESIDENT'S Welcome

It is my pleasure to welcome Jersey enthusiasts from across the world to Australia. We thank the World Jersey Cattle Bureau for the opportunity to host the 2025 World Jersey Conference.

It's an exciting time for the Jersey cow in Australia. We believe the Australian Jersey is one of the very best dairy cows in the world and able to compete internationally. The latest industry data released in February 2025 shows the Jersey cow now makes up 17.4% of the Australian dairy herd, an increase of 2% over the last year and 8% over the last decade.

There is strong demand for the Australian Jersey internationally with Australian Jersey semen being exported to New Zealand, America, Jersey Island, South Africa, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Uruguay, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Costa Rica, United Arab Emirates, Netherlands and Germany. It is a pleasure to continually receive positive reports about how daughters of Australian bred bulls are performing overseas.

The next two weeks will show how the Jersey cow performs in Australia. The tour will visit farms throughout Victoria and NSW. Those on the tour will see the Jersey cow being milked in various feeding systems from grass based with concentrate fed in the dairy with the addition of hay and silage in the paddock to Jersey cows being milked in total feed lot systems. The tour will visit farms milking a few hundred Jersey cows to a few thousand Jerseys cows. I know you will be impressed by how the Jersey cow performs in all of these systems.

As Australian dairy farmers we have been fortunate to be able to select semen and embryos from across the world to develop our Jersey cows. The Jersey cow in Australia today meets the commercial requirements of our industry and environment. You will also see some truly magnificent examples of the Jersey cow.

As the conference travels around South Eastern Australia, you will visit and see the varying Australian country side. Delegates will visit Australian world leading dairy research facilities, Australian icons such as the 12 Apostles, the Murray River and the Sydney Opera House.

Enjoy Australia, admire the Australian Jersey cow and most of all embrace the Jersey fellowship.

Jersey Australia President

WORLD JERSEY President's Welcome

It is my pleasure to extend to you all a very warm welcome to the 2025 World Jersey Conference being held in Australia.

These tours provide Jersey breeders a fabulous opportunity to come together to network, share ideas, celebrate successes, discuss developments across the globe and most importantly, celebrate the attributes of the Jersey cow – she truly is “more than a pretty face”!

I commend Jersey Australia for the amazing tour they have prepared as we will visit many well-known herds as well as reconnecting with their breeders.

Each day we are constantly reminded of the challenges of climate change and the compliance pressures that places on the dairy industry. It is important that we gather together to speak with one voice and strongly promote the value of the Jersey breed - her adaptability, feed conversion efficiency, calving ease, lower carbon footprint, A2A2 advantage, to name a few.

With the launch earlier this year of the new logo and website, World Jerseys are well on the way to adopting a new strategy as we work towards achieving greater knowledge and understanding of the Jersey breed and capture the imagination of the decision makers.

I look forward to seeing you all and I have every confidence that we will enjoy a tour filled with friendship, knowledge, inspiration and, as always, with the Jersey cow at the centre of it all.

“Jerseys – Feeding the world and sustaining the planet”.

The Jersey Cow in Australia

Cows are not native to Australia but they have been a familiar part of the countryside since 1788 when four arrived with the first European settlers.

Those cows, along with a bull and a bull calf, were promptly lost in the Australian bush but more arrived in 1795 and by 1810 most British cattle breeds had been successfully introduced to the colonies.

Jerseys weren’t part of the first fleet nor were they among the next groups of imports but they soon made their mark on the country. Today Australian Jerseys rank behind Holsteins as the second most common breed and are recognised globally as among the best in the breed.

Dairying was an important part of the growth of Australia. By the 1820s, small dairy farms were being established south of Sydney and in 1822 there was mention of Channel Island cattle with the sale of an Alderney bull, referring to one of three breeds from the islands along with Jerseys and Guernseys.

Records from the early years of European settlement of Australia are scant when it comes to the importation of cattle, but there were further mentions of a sale of Alderney – and possibly Jersey –cattle in 1829.

The year 1829 is now widely considered to be when Jerseys were introduced to Australia. The breed continued to spread across the country and there are records of Jersey imports to Victoria and South Australia in the 1850s and 1860s, laying the foundation for the breed.

However, the official Royal Jersey Agricultural & Horticultural Society’s (RJA & HS) annual reports don’t have any official mention of cattle going to Australia until 1903.

Herd books and show ring exhibitions started to emerge during the 1850s and 1860s as breed numbers increased. A ban on livestock imports from 1873 to 1878 led to a sharp rise in the prices of domestic animals and greater interest in breeding from the best bloodlines.

Every female in your herd is a micro business and deserves individual attention. Planning the right genetically optimized mating for each female can be a time-consuming exercise. WMS does that for you. We love it when a plan comes together.

State Affairs

John Baker, who settled in Morialta, South Australia after arriving from England in 1838 and later became the state’s premier, is widely credited as the first importer of registered Jerseys to Australia.

Many Australian herds were built on cattle bred at Morialta and there was a great trade in Jersey cattle in the 1880s.

In Victoria, the first import of a Jersey cow was recorded in 1854, though most imports before 1888 were known only as “ship cows”.

Australia’s longest established Jersey Stud, Kings Vale, was founded in Victoria by the Anderson family in 1886. It continued until a final dispersal in 2021 while also evolving into other studs run by family members using the Kings prefix.

The Melrose Jersey herd, established in the early 1880s, was another notable contributor to the breed.

In the 1941 publication, 'History of the Jersey in Australia’ author R.S. Maynard said probably no other herd had made a greater contribution to the breed in Australia.

Before the 1880s only a few pedigree Jerseys were recognised in New South Wales but a herd founded at Bowral by Sir Robert Lucas Tooth changed all that. The herd was later transferred to Kameruka near Bega and it contributed to the pedigree of many Australian herds.

Jersey herds were also established in Australia’s other dairying states Tasmania, Western Australia and most particularly Queensland, where Jersey breeders dominated in the early days. The Jersey Cattle Society of Queensland was formed in 1906.

Queensland was notable as being the first state in Australia to have its own dairy herd book, founded in 1899 and continued until 1972.

In 1900, the Australian Jersey Herd Book was established with the first volume published the following year, although it went into a hiatus until 1908 when membership of the society had risen to 69.

During the early part of the 20th century, the importation of Jerseys by the Department of Agriculture and exports of butter and other dairy products led to significant advancements for the breed.

Numbers increased in both pedigree and commercial stock during the early 1900s, making Jerseys the dominant breed in the country.

The period wasn’t without controversy. In 1914, Albert Gorrie published a privately-owned Jersey herd book, causing quite a stir within the Australian society

The introduction of herd testing in 1912 further advanced the quality of the breed and the Australian Government continued to encourage dairy farming.

In 1900 there were less than 500,000 dairy cows in Australia; by 1960 there were about 3.25 million, the majority of which were Jerseys.

At its peak in the 1950s, the Australian Jersey Herd Society had nearly 2,750 members while the Queensland society had 750 members.

Successful Studs

The Australian Jersey success was built upon by a number of significant studs in the 20th century, many lasting for decades and continuing to influence the breed today.

At the risk of overlooking significant contributors, some of the notable studs included Kings Vale, Belgonia, Francliff, Katandra, Bemersyde, Eurarie and Bushlea.

Other Jersey studs played their part and many Jersey herds made significant contributions to the advancement of the breed.

More recently, Jersey Australia has introduced a Master Breeder award to recognise breeding excellence over the past 20 years by Shirlinn, Loxleigh, Bushlea, Brookbora, Cairnbrae, Broadlin, Kings Ville, Jugiong, Wallacedale, Kaarmona, Merseybank and Murray Brook Jersey studs.

Australia has produced many outstanding cow families, including Fernleaf, Love Lies, Jenny, Girlie, Belle, Estelle, Sandy, Ilagay, Constance, Madge, Daisy, Sunshine, Illusion, Melaine, Rowena, Malvarie, and Iris.

Over many decades, Australian breeders have focused on getting the best genetics from around the world, whether it be from Jersey Island, New Zealand, United States, Canada, Europe or Scandinavia.

This 'best of the best' outlook helped to develop an ideal Jersey cow and Australian Jersey genetics are now in high demand across the world.

While pure registered Jersey cows have been a successful cornerstone of the Australian dairy industry, the breed has also been an important part of cross-breeding programs, dating back as far as 1910 when Jersey cows were mated with a Zebu bull. For the first 20 years of the Jersey Breeders Society studbook, registration of cattle with four crosses of pure Jersey sires was allowed.

Today Jerseys continue to play an important role in cross-breeding programs, particularly for their fertility traits.

Through the genetic recovery scheme, many modern herds have again entered the stud register.

Today's Australian Jersey

In the 1980s and 1990s, the number of Jersey cows in Australia dropped as Holsteins became the dominant breed, based largely on their higher production capacity.

However, that trend is starting to turn. In 2025, The Australian Jersey is the second most common breed in Australia, leading Aussie Red, Illawarra, Brown Swiss, Guernsey and Ayrshire.

Jerseys now account for nearly 18 per cent of the national herd, up from 10.5 per cent 15 years ago. Jersey Australia evolved from the Jersey Breeders Society that was established in 1899 and has been proactively advancing the breed over the past decade.

Two independent studies commissioned by Jersey Australia found that the breed has the attributes that can make them Australia’s most profitable and sustainable cows.

An initial study showed that Jerseys have higher fertility, higher production efficiency, and greater heat tolerance and longevity compared to other breeds, while further modelling showed Jerseys have up to 14 per cent advantage over Holstein Friesians in the cost of producing milk kg/Ms and are a better return on asset.

The independent studies backed up what Jersey farmers have been claiming for years; that Jersey cows are more profitable and sustainable.

The study found that Jerseys produce 6-11 per cent more energy-corrected milk (ECM) than Holsteins per kilogram of dry matter intake; 26-31 per cent more ECM per 100 kg bodyweight than Holsteins; have about 14-21 per cent higher feed intake capacity than Holsteins per 100kg bodyweight; and have about 5 per cent higher feed intake capacity than Holsteins per unit of metabolic weight.

Overall, dairy cattle numbers in Australia continue to decline but dairy remains one of the country’s most important rural industries, producing about 8.8 billion litres of milk in 2022-23 and directly employing about 33,500 people. It is the third-largest rural industry in Australia generating $6.1 billion in farm gate value in 2022-23. The majority of milk production occurs on the south-east seaboard in Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania.

There are about 1.3 million dairy cows in Australia and the country exports about 30 per cent of its milk production, with exports valued at $3.3 billion in 2022-23. A large proportion of exports are in the form of value-added products such as cheese, butter, ultra-heat-treated milk and milk powders. Australian dairy is exported around the world.

Although some farms have introduced barns, Australia is best known for its pasture-based grazing systems, with most farmers successfully growing and utilising pasture as the most important homegrown feed for their herds.

As the world strives to deal with harsher climatic conditions, the smaller-framed, fertile, productive and profitable Jerseys will continue to be a vital part of the Australian dairy industry and make their mark around the world.

Kings Ville JERSEYS

Rob and Kerrie Anderson and youngest daughter Holly, farm 465 acres of gently undulating land nestled below the picturesque hills of the Labertouche State Forest in Drouin West, Victoria.

Established in 1987, Kings Ville Jerseys was honoured to be one of the nine inaugural inductees of the Jersey Australia Master Breed Award in 2023.

Rob is a fourth generation Jersey breeder. Holly continues the tradition and has established Empire Jerseys, while daughters Emily and Meg own individual cows within the herd.

The farm was purchased in 2000. It is a dry land farm with a ryegrass pasture base using perennial hybrids and Italians. The herd is rotationally grazed, supplemented with grass silage together with protein hay in summer/cereal hay in winter alongside a mixed grain ration at milking.

The milking herd consists of 280 registered Jerseys with a split calving of 40% Autumn and 60% Spring. There are an additional 240 young stock on farm. The herd has achieved the Platinum Production Award from Jersey Australia for a number of years with an average rolling production of 6,668 Ltrs, 5.1% 341Kgs fat, 3.8% 255Kgs protein.

With production a key focus, an emphasis is placed on breeding cows of high genetic merit of correct functional type. Genomic testing has been utilised for the past 10 years. Breeding with and for polled genetics is a significant focus at Kings Ville with 25% of the herd polled.

The herd has produced several notable Jersey sires, including Kings Ville Bashful P the current number 7 proven sire, along with TLG Qantas, Boast, Boost, Bedford P, Boyd P and Taronga P. The Kings Ville herd ranks 13th based on BPI (Balance Performance Index).

Two notable cow families at Kings Ville are the Belle’s which descend from Duncan Belle. This high-ranking BPI cow family makes up the largest percentage of the herd and the Lassie’s being the largest polled cow family.

Rob is a board director at Jersey Australia, Vice Chairman of Australian Dairy Youth and has judged at many prominent shows within Australia and internationally.

Rob, Kerrie and Holly are on the CGJBC Fair committee. Holly is President of the Gippsland Dairy Youth Group. Both Kerrie and Holly enjoy taking photographs that capture the beauty of Jerseys, some of these are utilised in various dairy publications and as reference photos for Kerrie’s oil paintings.

Lynton & Lisa Broad, Gavin & Olivia, Maeve & Elena Broad

Broadlin was founded by Lynton Broad in 1962 at just 10 years old. More than six decades later, it remains one of Australia’s premier Jersey studs. His inspiration came from his parents, Reg and Clove, who operated the renowned Francliff Jerseys. In 1992, Lynton and Lisa Broad combined Lisa’s stud, Echo Downs, with Broadlin. Their son, Gavin, continued the family tradition by establishing his own stud, Broadside, in 2011.

Alongside Lynton & Lisa, Gavin, his wife Olivia, and their children, Maeve and Elena, operate their own successful herd, Broadside. It runs in conjunction with the Broadlin herd as a single operation based in Wonthaggi, South Gippsland, Victoria. The farm spans 280 hectares and peaks at 340 cows, with a calving split of 60% in autumn and 40% in spring. Gavin’s enthusiasm for breeding well balanced cows keeps us motivated to further improve the herd. All our children - Toni, Gavin, and Cassie - have all played a valuable role in our journey and successes.

We have always taken pride in the overall performance of our herd - breeding cows that are a pleasure to work with, compete well in the show ring and On-Farm Challenges, whilst maintaining high production levels.

Prominent cow families:

Broadlin: include Illusion, Constance, Ilagay, Bubbles and Vanessa.

Broadside: families such as Karen, Noella, Sharna, Ugene, Estelle and Rose.

Broadlin has bred several bulls that have entered AI programs in Australia, with the most influential to date being AUSSIEGOLD

His semen has been sold worldwide, having a significant impact across the globe, proving to be a massive success for the stud. Other notable bulls bred by Broadlin include HATMAN, ALGERNON, BUZZBOX, POLLEDGOLD, and BROADWAY

Current bulls in use: TLGBASHFUL, BROADWAY, VENTURA, STGWHISTMEL & CSCVAST

A major highlight for Broadlin was winning Supreme Champion at IDW in 2015 with Illusion 2817. She returned in 2018 to claim the Supreme Udder title, further cementing the stud’s success in the show ring.

Lisa and Lynton Broad have continuously looked for ways to improve while staying true to their goals of breeding for production mixed with a focus on type. Broadlin was one of the first herds in Australia to embrace the use of US semen which dramatically increased both type and production in the herd.

Broadlin continues to evolve, with many of the stud’s highest classifications achieved in recent years, including Excellent 94 for Broadlin Beryl 3028. Broadside has also seen success, with two Excellent 94 cows - Sandlewood Karen 2 and Broadside Noella 3622, and 2 achieving EXC93, Broadside Zola 3383 and Broadside Rose 3131

In 2018, Lisa and Lynton received the Genetics Australia Breeder Honour Certificate, recognising their contribution to the Australian dairy industry through the provision of elite genetics.

In 2023 Lynton and Lisa were honoured to receive a Master Breeder Award from Jersey Australia in recognition of the contribution to the jersey breed through the breeding of Elite genetics.

Their individual achievements have also been recognized - Lynton received the Lex Bunn Excellence Award, and Lisa was honoured with the Bette Hall Power of Women Award, both celebrating their leadership, genetic advancements, judging, breeding, and overall contributions to the dairy industry.

LANGDALE

Langdale JERSEYS

Langdale Jerseys is owned and operated by Darien and Alexandra Mathews, and daughters Ivy (8) and Cassidy (4).

Beginning in 2006 on a simple lease farm, the business and herd have been grown from the ground up utilizing a mix of share-farming and leasing options as opportunities to scale arose.

Beginning with 150 cows on the farm at Trafalgar, to 420 cows in Inverloch, and reaching 520 cows at Dumbalk, this growth gave us the stepping stone required to downsize the herd in 2022 and purchase our own farm in Mardan.

This was the Accomplishment of a life-long dream, as we had both grown up on dairy farms and always knew that we would be dairy farmers.

The farm is 380 acres and we have an additional 180 acres of dry block, located 15 mins away. Today’s operation milks 310 cows at peak, with 2/3 of the herd being registered Jerseys. The other 1/3 is mainly registered Holsteins, with a few lingering crossbreds.

Our current Jersey herd classification is: 62 EX (Including 1x 95, 1x 94), 86 VG & 55 GP.

There has always been a strong focus on genetics, utilizing bulls from all over the world, but focusing mainly on Australian cow families.

Our leading Australian cow families include Daisy, Dairymaid, Fernleaf, , Estelle, Melaine, Sleeping Beauty, Carmel, Rosella, Lizabeth, Madge and Silkie.

Via the On Farm Challenge platform, we have achieved some incredible results to help build our profile. This has included:

Jersey History on Display

Winsome Anderson’s archive and museum at Nar Nar Goon is a treasure trove of Jersey history, not only from Australia but from past World Jersey Cattle Bureau conferences.

The display includes dairy equipment dating back to the early 20th century plus signs and other items along with more than a century of Anderson family Jersey history.

Winsome’s own Jersey history is also highlighted, starting from her father Norrie De la rue who created Jersey stud Lucerne Vale in 1925 at Weering and then a second stud Glenwyn at Irrewillipe in 1946.

The Anderson family history is well represented reaching back to 1886 when Kings Vale Jerseys was originated by Joseph and Christina Anderson at Lyndhurst, and continuing through various family members over the generations.

Winsome, who was announced as the 2024 Bette Hall Power of Women in Dairy Award winner at International Dairy Week, has memorabilia from the 14 consecutive World Jersey Cattle Bureau conferences she attended from 1972 to 2018, including being a co-opted member to the organising committee for the Melbourne conference in 1999.

There is an album on display from every tour, including Australia 1976, 1999 and 2013. Winsome was the official Australian delegate to the United Kingdom conference in 1992 and South Africa in 1997, and attended 11 World Jersey Cattle Bureau council meetings in different parts of the world.

The display includes articles relating to the family’s involvement in local shows, International Dairy Week and the Royal Melbourne Show.

There are paper clippings dating back to 1912, photos as old as 1895, original herd books from 1901 to 1969, every Jersey Journal, Melbourne Show and International Dairy Week catalogues and reports and show ribbons as old as 1918.

The archive is housed in a carpeted and insulated garage covered floor to ceiling with memorabilia.

The equipment display is housed in a separate shed and includes an antique two-bale wooden dairy complete with old milking machines from New Zealand, an antique finger mower, old baling press, an antique drill and a sweep.

Since 2000, we’ve been investing in positive change that benefits everyone in the Victorian dairy industry, supporting people and businesses to create thriving communities where they want to live, work and invest.

Wallacedale JERSEYS

Established in 1947 by the late Vic and Val Wallace, Wallacedale Jerseys is still going strong some 78 years on. Carried on and grown by Cliff and Marieka, it is now owned and managed by the third generation Luke and Melanie.

The farm consists of 76 ha of 100% dry land pastures of which 70 ha are used to graze the 200 cow milking herd. A further 36 ha owned by Cliff and Marieka 2 km down the road is leased by Luke and Mel to run young stock. The feeding management of these young stock is done mostly by Cliff. Melanie manages the young calves on a Lely Calm auto feeder until weaning age. In the last year the lease of a 28 ha property next door has been utilised to run dry cows, heifers, embryo recipients and bulls. Demand for bulls is very high with the farm selling up to 30 bulls a year to other breeders and local dairy farmers. The milking herd are fed grass when available and then supplemented with home grown pasture silage during the wet winters and the drier months of summer. Grain consumed per cow is around 1.8 – 2.0 tonnes per lactation made up of a mix containing, wheat, barley, maize, canola meal, soy bean meal, mineral additives, probiotics and other additives as required. The highest producing cows receive 7 kgs per cow at peak production being around the 32 to 39 litre range. The herd is currently on track to average 6200 ltrs, 5.1% ft, 3.75% prt and 550 kgs milk solids.

Cow families are considered the most important element in our breeding program. Building pedigrees that contain generation after generation of high performance cows has seen the herd improve steadily over recent years. The most influential family for the success of the current herd has without question been the Melaine and Melanie lines. At one point in time over 60% of the herd were members of this family. They have produced cows scored to EXC 94. Production over 9,000 litres and a cow to over 103,000 litres of lifetime milk! Great Southern Challenge winners, first place winners at International Dairy Week, and bull mothers just to name a few achievements!

Other cow families of note are the Madge, Melys, Belle (Duncan Belle), Marie. There are currently 7 Wallacedale bred young sires available. Using the most recent Aug 24 official figures, they include Stark PP the # 1 Homozygous bull available in the country, Vast P the number 3 heterozygous bull available and Gadget one of the breeds elite type and mammary sires. All 3 bulls are from the Madge family. Along with Pickle who is a sire of sons, then Goldband P, TLGExquisite P, TLGLemonpeel P and TLGDepole P round out the group.

A breeding dream and goal had been to have Wallacedale genetics used globally. This dream came true in 2022 when straws from Goldband P and Stark PP made the journey across to South Africa. Since then semen from these 2 and others have been exported to more countries including New Zealand, Switzerland, UK, Germany, Italy, Pakistan, Ecuador and Peru.

There have been many highlights over the years but none more special than receiving an inaugural Master Breeders Award in 2023. With what is considered a small herd, to have at the time bred more Jersey Australia Elite Brood Cows than any other herd was an incredibly humbling and rewarding feeling. In 2012 the stud held its ‘Future Fortunes Sale’ on property. After two years of planning, combined with some incredible help and support from family and Jersey friends. It resulted in an Australian record breaking single vendor female average of $5,755. Top price being $16,500 for an In Milk member of the Belle family. Of the 45 female lots, 21 went on to score Exc. Females from that sale also went on to win broad ribbons at IDW, become bull mothers and establish families in some of Australia’s leading herds.

November 2022 saw the installation of 2 Lely A5 Astronaut robot milkers. The herd transitioned to this new way of milking exceptionally well, much quicker than we did! Within 10 months the farm was running 170 cows through the 2 units and made the decision to install a 3rd unit in November 2023 to increase cow numbers and more milkings per cow per day.

Running as a simple 2 way grazing system, Luke & Mel have been pleased with farm and cow performance and very happy with the decision to adopt this technology.

It has allowed a more balanced lifestyle and given greater flexibility for involvement in other areas of our lives. The family has been involved in both local Jersey clubs for decades. Melanie is the current treasurer for the Central Gippsland club. Luke previously held a position as a classifier for Jersey Australia for 5 years. He is currently on the genetics steering committee of Jersey Australia. With judging appointments at many local shows in Australia as well as judging in New Zealand. With over a dozen On Farm Challenges judged, 2 stand out as the most memorable. Firstly the Great Southern Challenge was a big honour and privilege to judge some of the very best cows in the country.

The second and most challenging & enjoyable was the Leading Edge Genetics All Breeds Challenge. Travelling around Gippsland and judging up to 100 cows a day of all breeds with up to 100 head in each age group was a truly amazing experience.

Luke & Mel love the Jersey breed and are passionate about helping to make the future of the breed a strong one. "Our aim has always been to build on and improve proven cow families that are long lasting, profitable and enjoyable to work with day to day. Also to share our genetics with other breeders who are interested in our cattle. We have so many amazing friends in the Jersey world and are forever grateful to the Jersey cow for this connection. We hope all involved in the World Jersey Cattle Bureau visit to Australia have a wonderful time and are impressed by the modern Australian Jersey Cow!"

Araluen Park JERSEYS

Trevor Saunders and Anthea Day

Trevor and Anthea are both fourth generation dairy farmers. Anthea’s family starting their farming adventure after selling a hotel and buying a dairy farm in 1912. Starting with Ayrshire and Jersey cows from a very early stage. Stud bulls were sourced for the herd bulls with care taken to select from top studs of the day and from these studs best cow families. Trev’s paternal grandparents were given six Jersey cows as a wedding present in 1931 and continued with Jerseys from then on.

Anthea became a member of AJBS in 1983 adding a registered component to her Jersey dairy herd.

Trev became a member of AJBS in 1989.

They purchased the farm at Shady Creek together in 2004 and combined the best from our separate herds to move forward as Araluen Park. We also incorporated the Stony Run stud prefix into our herd working with our very good American friend Loren Ruth. Through the Stony Run component of our herd we have concentrated on cow families that not only were strong in their maternal lines but were identified as proven bull producing families. A belief we strongly adhere to, is that not every exceptional cow family is capable of producing bulls. A belief we still hold even with the onset of genomics. Today at Araluen, we have multi Australian generationally bred cow families from America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Including members of the Flower, Faith, Sherry, Mary Sue, Peggys, Violet, Bambi, Sandra, Posh, Pix, Fame, Babe, Katie, Impish, Meg and many others. Our heritage families, bred down from both our families, hold a special place in our hearts.

We currently run 680 hectares over two farms. The home farm that we run with our youngest son Cody milks up to 700 cows of which, currently, 93% are Jerseys and the remaining 7% are Ayrshire.

All young stock are run on the property. Our Ayrshire herd is the number one BPI Ayrshire herd in Australia and currently our Jersey herd sits at number eight. The second farm milks up to 420 cows and is managed by Anthea’s middle son Jake who owns his own herd and share farms the property

The introduction of genetic recovery was pivotal for both our herds and embraced with enthusiasm. Today the Araluen Park herd is fully registered, every animal is genome tested, we herd record monthly, and every animal is classified. We are a Five Star Jersey Herd

We have a focus on fertility, production, type and calf vitality. We concentrate hard on keeping a strong focus on our ideals and we have 95 x2, 94 x3, 93 x18, 92 x34, and 91 x57 with over 210 females 90 points or better in the herd today. The Araluen Park Genetic development program is intensively managed. We are continually searching the world for the most suitable bulls to use in our herd.

Production is an important focus we run a pasture/ grain fed diet with cows getting supplemented with conserved fodder during low pasture growth times of the year. We aim for production per hectare rather than per cow but our herd does consistently produces 500 - 550 kgs milk solids per cow. We generally produce 500,000 of milk solids per year across the two farms.

Simon Tognola Photography

We supply Burra foods who pay us 1 to 1 on kilos of Fat and Protein. Our mating program has embraced sexed semen. With the addition of the World Wide Sires cow manager tags, our conception rate to sexed semen is outstanding.

Last spring joining achieved a 6 week non return rate over 120 yearling heifers of 82% with 100% sexed semen usage. This has in turn advanced our genetic gain in our herd with genomics. We use 100% AI.

We block calve twice a year from Feb to the middle of April and then July to mid-October. We had used a considerable amount of Dairy Beef but as there is not much of a market as yet we have switched back our focus on quality heifers selling surplus calves, yearlings and heifers.

A bit about ourselves. We have both had a lifetime of involvement in the registered dairy cattle industry. From local cattle clubs, industry representation, state and national breed organisations with Trevor currently the Oceanic Vice President on the World Jersey Cattle Bureau. Anthea is currently the president of Australian Ayrshires and deeply involved with a global move to establish pathways to enable complete genomic data transfer for Ayrshires. As well as being President of Central Sires.

Warrion JERSEYS

Warrion Jerseys is located north of Colac in South West Victoria and run by Sarah Chant.

The stud was founded in 1972 by Sarah's grandparents and later managed by her Parents for 25 years before being passed to her in 2017. The herd began with large influences from Edi Genetics and Barwon Vale and has been predomently built from there, now with a large focus on developing these families. Artificial insemination (AI) was introduced in the early 1990s, followed by a long-standing collaboration with Amy Wright of WWS from the early 2000s.

Today, the farm operates across 600 acres, milking 260 cows in a split calving pattern. Based in a drier region, irrigation is essential to sustain the herd through the summer months, though the farm remains largely self-sufficient in feed production. A strong emphasis has always been placed on breeding robust, well-structured cows with quality udders-ensuring ease of milking and long-term productivity.

"We are excited to welcome the World Jersey Cattle Bureau (WJCB) this April and look forward to sharing our herd with visitors from around the world", Sarah said.

Dornoch JERSEYS

Dornoch Jersey stud nestled against the Otway National Park at Winchelsea South, Victoria is a family owned and operated dairy, currently milking 800 registered Jersey cows.

Originally established 50 years ago by Ernie and Jean Parish, their sons Paul and David Parish and David’s wife Lyn currently own and manage the herd. David and Lyn’s five daughters all either actively play a role in the business or have intentions to return to the farm in the future.

The herd has increased in size from humble beginnings and progressively improved through the use of artificial insemination (AI) and selective breeding choices and management.

In 1981, Dornoch Jerseys embarked on its AI journey using New Zealand sires, later transitioning to American sires. Today, a mix of Australian and American sires are utilised and individually evaluated.

Lyn says they are focused on breeding hard-working functional cows that suit a commercial operation. Fertility is a priority, with robust frames and strong components to breed quality Dornoch Jerseys. Throughout the early 1990s, Lyn embraced the role of the breeding program with the guidance of herd evaluator, Amy Wright. Lyn's unwavering determination and passion for enhancing the herd has yielded impressive results.

Dornoch Jerseys has rapidly climbed the Balance Performance Index (BPI) rankings for Australian Jerseys, currently holding fifth position (August 2024). The success is a testament to the commitment to continuous improvement of the Parish family. All 250 of the heifer replacements are genomically tested at a young age prior to entering to the closed herd to advance the next generation through sexed semen joining. Dornoch Jerseys’ goal is to aspire to even greater heights and they look forward to sharing achievements in the future with Jersey friends.

White Star JERSEYS

The Glennen family started farming at the foot of Mount Noorat in south-west Victoria in 1923.

Con’s grandparents, Con and Maggie Glennen, bought the original 85 acres where they raised their family of 15. Over 100 years later, the property has expanded to a 500-acre milking platform.

The farm is pasture based with a medium to high input system, milking 400 Jersey cows at home with 250 acres of out paddocks supporting all herd replacements and growing a large percentage of the herd’s fodder requirements.

Soils types in Noorat range from challenging black flats to rich volcanic soil of which 140 acres is watered by three centre pivots. Milk is supplied to Fonterra on a fresh milk contract with a flat milk curve and cell count under 200,000 a mandatory requirement.

To provide the flat milk curve, cows are calved twice a year with a 50/50 split in autumn and spring.

The farm is staffed by third generation farmer Con, who started working alongside his uncles in 1992, wife Michelle, two fourth generation farmers in their sons James and William, and one casual staff member.

The WHITE STAR JERSEYS Stud, named after the White Star Line that bought the family to Australia, was established in 1978 by Con’s uncles, Con and Jack, and his aunt Bernadette, the three remaining siblings from the family still living on Dalvui Lane.

The herd has been "closed" for 50 years as the siblings just wanted to milk good Jersey cows with breeding focused along commercial lines.

They are great believers in genetics and data. Starting as an original Ginfo herd, they provided tissue samples and herd records for some of the original genomic research work.

All reared heifer and bull calves are ear notched and the whole herd is herd tested am/pm 12 times a year and breeding and culling decisions are made with this data.

They also use activity collars for health and breeding, covering about 60% of the herd with sexed semen, 30% conventional and 10% beef.

“We aim to breed a cow that we want to milk, is a great converter of grass into milk solids,” Michelle says. “We want an animal that is well engineered to walk a distance, tolerate heat, get back into calf and produce milk with a low cell count, all while presenting with a lovely temperament and a great work ethic.”

WHITE STAR COBBLER and WHITE STAR PEGARK were the first WHITE STAR bulls to enter the progeny test system in 1995. Some 43 bulls and 30-plus years later, WHITE STAR DOUGGAN is, at the time of writing, the top daughter proven bull in Australian Breeding Value System. The herd sits number one for Balanced Performance Index, Health Weighted Index, Sustainability Index and Australian Selection Index.

“You don't get there in one generation,” Con says. “In this case it has taken over 100 years of hard work, dedication from generations of family and a passion for the breed.”

Murray Brook JERSEYS

Paul and Lynette Lenehan established Murray Brook Jerseys in 2000, building on Paul’s 35 years of breeding experience and his dedication to big, balanced cows with strong production.

Paul’s breeding goals haven’t changed much since he was 14 and started working on the family farm near Koroit in south-west Victoria.

“I’ve always wanted a big-bodied cow with capacity to eat a lot of feed and produce a lot of milk and she had to have a good udder to carry that and to last in the herd for a long time,” he said.

“One of the main comments I get when people come here is about the size of the cattle.”

It starts with letting cows grow to a big size before calving. “If they’re too small when they calve, you’re forever trying to catch up,” he says.

The focus on quantity hasn’t hurt quality and the farm has achieved platinum awards every year since they were introduced and before that always managed gold.

The herd usually places around fifth or sixth on the national rankings and the cows produce over 7000 litres with 620-640 kg/Ms.

Murray Brook Jerseys also contributes bulls to the A.I system, with cscJamieO, currently the number four proven bull in Australia, Motie, Bosa Khan, Motown and this year Sheehan was added to the catalogues. The stud is also excited to announce that Tower Hill has recently been sent to Genetics Australia, with hopes that he will be available later this year.

Paul won the On Farm Great Southern Challenge the first year he entered in 2009 with a bought-in cow Noeda Mayfair 143, and returned to the winner’s podium in 2013 with three-year-old Murray Brook Annie 3660.

She was classified Ex 93, one of four cows to achieve that ranking alongside her daughter Murray Brook Annie 3908, Murray Brook Orchard 4022 and most recently Murray Brook Marie 4872.

“I haven’t showed, apart from the On Farm Challenge,” Paul said. “I’ve always been commercially focused but I like them to look good.”

The stud’s principal cow families include the Annie family, highlighted by the pair of Ex93 cows, the Ash family which led to Shadow Man and continues to do well, and the Lyn family highlighted by Lyn 4058 and two sons in AI –cscJamieo and Motown.

Of the cow families bought by Paul, Orchard, Hattie, Empress and Daisy have been strong.

Paul has been genomic testing since 2015 and the whole herd is now tested.

In the early days, Paul used a lot of American genetics but now uses more Australian genetics.

Their son Adam now runs the farm but Paul, a Jersey Australia Master Breeder, remains active in most parts of the business and has the reins of breeding.

“I’ve always been a commercial breeder. I went 35 years before being registered and I’m still a commercial breeder,” he said.

BROOKBORA EILEEN 130

Brookbora JERSEYS

Celebrating 60 years of Brookbora in 2024, it has been an incredible journey to bring the herd to where it is today. With hard work and history behind Brookbora; much has been achieved under the stewardship of dedicated family members; and they continue to push forwards while not forgetting the past.

The family farm was established in 1949 by Robert Bacon’s grandparents, George and Jean, and the herd first registered in 1964 by Robert’s father, Norman, and his brother Henry – with his mother Margaret already strongly involved within the business. A few years later, Henry and his wife, Nolene, established their own farming business, while Norm and Margaret continued with the Tennyson farm and herd.

Robert and his twin brother, Colin, left school in 1981 to work alongside their parents. In 1997 Robert and Sandra partnered with Colin and Narelle to take ownership of the business, and Norm and Margaret retired. Robert’s passion and ownership of the breeding program since leaving school; continued on in 2001 as Robert and Sandra bought the other half of the Brookbora home farm, and the majority of the herd. Colin and Narelle bought another farm locally.

Robert and Sandra’s son Daniel completed a Bachelor of Animal Science, starting work as an animal nutritionist and part time on farm in 2014, returning to the farm on a full-time basis in 2022, with Kelsi joining the family in 2023.

The original Brookbora founding cow families of Love Lies and Standard Lady, together with numerous introductions over the years; have had much success and provide a broad base to work with into the future. Proven sires over the years have worked well with maternal lines including Quicksilver Royal, Brook, Berretta, Taranak; and more recently Vanahlem and Valentino and Askn.

The family strives to breed highly commercial & functional cows from deep maternal lines with the will to milk. A shared vision for the breeding program, knowledge, passion, drive, and foresight to breed a herd with type, production, and index propelled Brookbora to many highlights including:

• Consistently in top 1% herd for BPI [Balanced Performance Index] for Australian Jerseys. The operation is a predominately pasture-based feeding regime, supported by hay, silage, and grain.

• Bred 542 EX cows to date (1 x EX95, 4 x EX94, 20 x EX93, 69 x EX92, 106 x EX91, 342 x EX90)

• Multiple championships in the Jersey On-Farm Challenge at club, Great Southern and Australian level.

• Premier Breeder IDW 2019-2025 and Premier Jersey Exhibitor – IDW 2020-2025

• Held Australia’s Platinum Production award for the last three decades with recent production to 668kg milk solids in 305 days with 260 cow average

• Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor – 2020 All - Australian photographic competition.

• Master Breeder Award from Jersey Australia at inaugural 2023 presentation.

Sires into AI have included Brookbora Valentino Askn, co-breeding Pannoo Abe Vanahlem, Brookbora Bushfield-P, Brookbora Borung, Brookbora Aeroglen, and Brookbora Bert

With a farm mantra of #achievesomething, Sandra, Daniel & Kelsi look forward to moving their vision onwards into the future continuing Brookbora’s legacy.

Jugiong JERSEYS

Jugiong was established in 1932 by Veronica and Phillip Nicholson. Veronica had a dream of establishing a herd of quality dairy cows that would commercially sustain her children and their families.

Today brothers Pat and Brendon Nicholson look back and wonder what Veronica would think, some 92 years on. So much has been Accomplished from one woman’s dream and a family’s commitment to the Jersey Breed.

The stud was named after the NSW town where Veronica was born and grew up.

Jugiong was carried on by Veronica and Phillip’s son, Arthur and his wife Iris at the foothills of the Grampiansin the Wimmera. Their sons Bill and Phillip with their wives Evelyn and Amy further developed the herd and moved it to its present location at Girgarre in the Goulburn Valley. From here Jugiong began to make an impression on the breed and industry.

Today the herd is owned and managed by the fourth generation of Nicholsons, Bill & Evelyn’s sons Pat and Brendon together with their wives Carmen and Tenealle.

Pat and Brendon are both past classifiers with Jersey Australia and have both judged throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The farm is fully flood irrigated and covers 224 ha, 80% of the pasture is annuals to best utilise the irrigation water available.

The herd comprises 450 registered Jerseys and is split calving with 35% Autumn and 65% Spring.

The herd has achieved the Platinum Production Award from Jersey Australia for a number of years, with last season achieving the Gold Production award.

Production has always been and will continue to be a priority and this has helped Jugiong provide for four generations of the Nicholson family.

Over the years, showing has played a major part of the promotion of the herd. Jugiong has exhibited at most major shows throughout Victoria, NSW and South Australia.

Highlights include Champions at International Dairy Week, Melbourne Royal, Sydney Royal, State Shows and fairs. Jugiong exhibited Senior Champion at the Victorian Autumn Fair for 19 years in succession, a feat that has never been matched.

The milking herd was dispersed in September 2019 following years of low water allocations and difficult seasons. The herd has since been rebuilt with the heifers that were retained at this time.

The Jugiong herd is based on Francliff bloodlines both maternal and paternal and this provided a wonderful base with which North American genetics worked very well after being introduced in the late 1980s.

Cow families have always been a big part of our breeding philosophy. The ‘Daydream’ family is the flagship family and has been a part of Jugiong for 75 years producing many noted herd members.

Other noted families include; Leonie, Petunia, Ronita, Ilagay, Buttercup, Illusion and Beth.

International families of note include; Nellie’s & Hattie’s from Rebob, Delilah’s from Dutch Hollow, Magic’s from Graber in the USA and the Doris’s form Willand in New Zealand.

Jugiong was honored and proud to of been one of nine inaugural inductees of Jersey Australia’s Master Breeder Award in 2023. They continue to use what they consider to be the best genetics from both Australia and North America.

Kaarmona JERSEYS

Graeme and Rohan Sprunt have an enviable record to their names. They are the only breeders in Australia to attain Master Breeder awards in two breeds – Jersey and Holstein.

Their farm at Kaarimba in Northern Victoria was settled in 1874 and Graeme and Rohan are the fourth generation to operate the farm, with Jerseys introduced in the 1960s when their parents were married.

In 1965 the first Kaarmona prefixed animal was registered at Jersey Australia.

Graeme and Rohan own 240 hectares (600 acres) and have 68-ha perennial pasture, 63-ha annual ryegrass, 15 Ha double cropped with maize and wheat, 29-ha lucerne for silage and hay and the balance is dryland and dedicated young stock rearing. They lease a further 148Ha (370 acres) for grain & fodder production. The total 1000 acre enterprise is run by just Graeme, Rohan & 1 full time employee, Harry Moon. A casual relief milker is utilised when available.

The farm originally had 434ML water right but they have purchased additional entitlements and it now has 750ML HR water shares and 332ML LR.

The milking platform utilises biological farming practices. No synthetic fertilisers used for about 12 years, with the goal of improving soil biology and being more sustainable.

They have used WMS mating program for about 20 years with WWS’s Amy Wright being our consultant for the last 7+ years. There’s no doubt that this mating tool has contributed greatly to the consistency of our herd today.

The herd peaks at around 400+ cows in spring and doesn’t go below around 230 through winter. In 1994, Graeme and Rohan started with 100 Holsteins and 30 Jerseys but today’s herd is now made up of 80% registered Jerseys. Their calving pattern is 15% January, 35% autumn and the balance in spring.

BULLS OF PROMINENCE have included BOR, Belgonia Royal Light, Brigadier, Lester, Quicksilver Royal, Berretta, Alf, BWParade, Jace, Valerian, Vanahlem, Valentino, Oliver (P), Matt, Aldrin, Invincible, and Grant.

Kaarmonas Current bull team includes Starlord, Jeronimo, Broadway (P), Impeccable, Sturgis, Corona, TLGBashful, CSCBrady, Gadget, AltaIMPERIAL (P), Bert and AltaLABRINTH.

They have bred proven bulls CSCBerlest, Marvig, BOSMarstar, Loki, Valerian, Gainful, Jurace, Rhumona, JEFestival, Vasilis, JEJeep, Glenferrie, CSCBalenti, the current number one genomic Jersey bull with type and udders of 110 or higher in Aust, CSCBRADY, and the current number one genomic POLLED Jersey bull with type & udders of 110 or higher, AltaIMPERIAL (P).

Kaarmona’s achievement are many, including having the current number 3 ABV Jersey and Holsteins herds and nearly all cows are awarded Jersey Australia’s `5 - Star Jersey Cow ’ award. SUCCESSES HAVE INCLUDED:

> Winning the Great Southern Challenge Grand Champion Cow twice with the same cow, Kaarmona Parade Babe 2, SUP93 in 2007 & 2010. Kaarmona Parade Babe 2 was also Honourable Mention Intermediate Champion IDW 2008 & then CHAMPION UDDER Jersey Cow IDW 2010.

> Reserve Champion Cow IDW 2006 with Brunetta Brook Marie, SUP92. This cow was also Honourable Mention Champion Cow IDW 2000 and won her in-milk class three times at IDW.

> Multiple in-milk class winners at IDW.

> Honourable Mention Champion Cow IDW 2005 with Kaarmona Lester Babe 2 (ET), SUP93

They have achieved a Jersey Australia Platinum Production Award every year since 2007, except for last year, and exported embryos back to USA from the Babe family which originated in USA.

All calves are genomically tested and registered within three months of birth and all 2yo heifers are classified.

Graeme and Rohan have also contributed to the industry as Jersey Australia and Genetics Australia committee and board members and they were an Original GINFO herd with their monthly herd test data and classifications scores of 2-year-olds contributing to the genomic database in Australia.

They aim to breed large framed powerful Jerseys with great udders to graze quality pasture and produce large volumes of high quality milk, continue to contribute to the genetic pool to advance the breed and continue improving farming techniques to remain viable.

Loxleigh JERSEYS

Loxleigh Jerseys was established in 1952 by Robert (Bob) and his father William (Harold) Akers when Bob decided he would prefer to be a dairy farmer than an orchardist.

The Loxleigh herd was established on the Broken River at Orrvale just out of Shepparton on 50 acres and the orchard was removed as cow numbers increased. The Akers had a significant history in the local orchard industry with Bob’s grandfather being the first chairman of Shepparton Preserving Co-operative better known as SPC.

The Loxleigh stud name came from the Loxleigh area just east of Nagambie where the family farmed in the early 1900s before moving to Orrvale when irrigation came to the area.

The herd was founded on some local blood lines. The Marie family is one of the original families which can be traced back to Belgonia with significant numbers in the herd today. Many Elenko families and sires were introduced through the 1960s and 1970s. The Sybil, Bonnie, Gem and Love Lies families remain in the herd today.

The introduction of Denison Park cow families through the late 1990s during herd expansion had an impact. Families such as Iris, Designer, Melaine and Buttercup are prominent among the herd favorites today. The Iris family currently has the bull Loxleigh Irymple standing at TLG with semen available.

The purchase of the Vanessa family at the Daraway dispersal in 2003 saw the establishment of another cow family having significant influence in the Loxleigh herd today, with the bulls Invincible and Ventura standing at Genetics Australia.

In 1993, a dairy was built on the run off farm at Tallygaroopna. In late July 1993, the Loxleigh herd and Akers family moved to Tallygaroopna to the larger 260-acre farm. The farm has expanded during the past 30 years to now cover 1,800 acres operating across two dairies, milking 850 cows in total. Young stock are reared on farm and most hay and silage is home grown.

Loxleigh is focused on breeding cows that will compete in a grazing system and carry quality udders for a lifetime. When selecting sires there is a focus on udders, chest width, depth of rib and fertility.

The herd grazes in the paddock on annual and perennial ryegrass and clover 52 weeks per year and this is supplemented with 8kgs of grain mix per day in the dairy. The herd is topped up with silage and hay as required. Loxleigh has on several occasions received the platinum production award. The aim is to produce 500kgs Milk Solids per cow in a 300day lactation. In good years, this is well exceeded.

Herd Highlights;

> In 2023 Loxleigh was honored to be recognized by Jersey Australia as one of the 9 inaugural herds to be awarded the Master Breeder Award.

> Four times Great Southern Challenge Supreme Champion

> Twelve Champion Cow awards Great Southern Challenge

> Supreme Champion All Australian On Farm Challenge

> Four Champion Cow awards All Australian On Farm Challenge

> Three bulls currently standing in AI

Darrynvale JERSEYS

Darrynvale Jerseys milks 300 cows on the highly fertile soils of the Ovens River Flood Plains in Milawa, North East Victoria.

Owned and operated by Darryn Hourigan. His partner Rochelle and Darryn’s son Bailey and daughter Ellie are also involved in running the farm. Bailey and Ellie also work off farm in other agricultural industries while daughter Grace is a Social Worker at Wangaratta Hospital. Young stock are run and fodder is produced on Darrynvale’s second and third farms at Tarrawingee and Byawartha.

Darrynvale is a platinum production herd and regularly achieves more than 7,000 litres average, with some cows producing up to 11,000 litres.

Its cow families can be traced back to the renowned Elenko, Warrick and Tecoma studs.

In the early 1980s, Darryn’s father Keith invested in Big Hollow and Merriland genetics in New Zealand, including the world-renowned Daisy family which has had an enormous influence in the herd with very deep pedigrees, including cows up to12 generations Excellent. Merriland Silver Satin (imp) was classified 93 points and won numerous championships.

Darryn continues to breed award winning cows with deep pedigrees. Merriland Silver Satin’s great-greatgreat granddaughter, DV Tequila Satin (EX-92 points) won Junior Champ at IDW, the Great Southern Challenge and All Australian 2-year-old.

DV Jim Satin EX92, won her class in the Central Gippsland On Farm Challenge on three occasions for co-owners Ellie Hourigan and Reece and Toni Attenborough.

DV Whiskey Josephine EX92 won the Great Southern Challenge Champion 3-year-old, 2009. She was purchased by Kaarmona Jerseys and has established a reliable family.

Another family that dominates Darrynvale is the Joans, which originated from Elenko in the late 1960s, with DV Vanahlem Joan 2 EX91 awarded Champion 3-year-old and 4-year-old Great Southern Challenge and All Australian 3-year-old, 2016.

Another family member DV Vanahlem Joan EX91 has produced up to 11,000 litres, the highest milking cow in the herd at present.

DV Bhama Favour EX93 was awarded 3, 4 and 5-yearold Champion in the Great Southern Challenge and was overall Reserve Champion Cow on two occasions, also originating from the Merriland stud (N.Z)

Darryn believes classification is an important tool and has classified for about 45 years, with cows classified twice a year for breeding and commercial purposes. Genomic testing is another tool that Darrynvale is using.

In the herd there are 100 cows classified at 90 points and 40 at 91 points and above. Because it is a pasture-based operation, Darryn believes in breeding dairy cows for Australian conditions that have strength and the ability to walk long distances.

The Bonnie family also originated from the Elenko Stud with DV Marks Bonnie 15, EX92 Junior Champion at the Shepparton Show and Intermediate Honorable Mention at IDW.

Located in the heart of the Riverina, just outside Mayrung, New South Wales, Wyoming Dairy is a modern 900-acre operation run by the Steenholdt family. With a passion for bovine health and Jersey cow dairy systems, Mr. Steenholdt brings 17 years of experience from intensive dairy farms in New Mexico and Texas to the operation in Australia. At Wyoming Dairy, the focus is on an intensive dairy system, where the Jersey cows are fed a customised total mixed ration (TMR), including corn silage, milled barley, and Manildra Stockfeed DDG-S Wheat Pellets.

This feed system ensures the cows consistently produce high-protein, high-fat A2 milk, with quality that’s second to none. The farm also grows its own feed crops, including corn for silage, making the most of every inch of the 900 acres. The Steenholdts have integrated a successful breeding program, exclusively using sexed semen to reduce unwanted bull calves, while also producing top-quality beef-cross wagyu steers for feedlots. As the farm continues to grow, the team is aiming for 10,000 cows, pushing the boundaries of intensive dairy farming and sustainable practices in Australia. Wyoming Dairy is a true example of how smart systems and innovation are paving the way.

WILGO JERSEYS was established in 1878 with the stud being established in 1908 with many families still here today.

Wilgo JERSEYS

WFarm Visit Sponsor

ilgo Jerseys was established in 1878 in Cobargo NSW with the stud starting in 1908.

Aaron and Emma Salway along with their sons Jack (16) and Riley (11) are continuing the Wilgo farm and stud today.

Aaron is the 6th generation to run the stud with the hopes that their sons, who are both keen farmers, will take it on down the track.

Aaron and Emma have always had a love for dairy cattle, with their breeding journey in Jerseys and Illawarras respectively starting at a young age. In April 2009 they started milking their own cows in partnership with Aaron’s parents Robert and Janelle Salway. In August 2014, they purchased the Wilgo Farm from Robert and Janelle.

They started milking only 40 cows in 2009, and now milk between 200 and 240 year-round on the 187ha farm. The herd is 80% Jersey, with the remaining 20% being made up of Illawarras, Holsteins and crossbreds.

Emma says they have always classified, with two of their favourites from one of the cow families that dates all the way back to the beginning, Wilgonia LC Queenie and Wilgo Samson Queenie 2nd both classifying EX94 in the past 12 months. These cows are also maternal sisters, whose mother was their 1st EX92 cow many years ago. They also have 3x EX93 cows, 10x EX92 and numerous 90 and 91-point cows.

Wilgo has had many successes over the years both in the show ring and in On Farm Challenges. Some of their favourite successes include Wilgonia LC Queenie EX94 who was Supreme Champion at Cobargo and Bega Shows in 2016 and 2017, and also the Great Northern Challenge Champion in 2016. Her daughter Wilgo Sambo Queenie EX92 was the Great Northern Challenge Champion in 2022.

Wilgo Samson Queenie 2nd EX94 was Champion at their local On Farm Challenge as a 2-year-old, Supreme Champion Cobargo and Bega Shows 2022, Hon Mention Gippsland Jersey Fair 2023 and 3rd 5-year-old at IDW 2024.

And the success continues…Wilgo Valentino Stevie 87@2yo was the All-Australian 2yo in 2023, Wilgo Samson Shamrock 2nd EX90 was Supreme Champion Candelo, Cobargo and Bega Shows 2023, Supreme Champion Candelo 2024 and Reserve Champion Senior2 All-Australian Photo Comp 2023.

Aaron and Emma aim to breed cows that are deep bodied, wide from their muzzle right through to their rump, with great udders that have the capacity to produce a lot of milk.

They use AI, and keep a couple of bull calves each year out of their cow families that continue to breed to their goals, and can be used as herd sires.

RBrunchilli & Rivendell JERSEYS

iverlane Dairy Pty Ltd is a family owned and operated dairy farm on the NSW South Coast along the Shoalhaven River flats.

Formed in 2021 by fourth and third generation dairy farmers Stewart Menzies and David Boyd; Riverlane Dairy was named after the combining of two-family run farming businesses; The Menzies family farm (Rivendell Jerseys), on the flats of the Shoalhaven River, & the Boyd family (Brunchilli Jerseys) who relocated from the NSW Southern Riverina in 2016.

Riverlane Dairy has grown the registered Jersey herd to 800 milkers calving year-round and producing more than five million litres of milk annually. It was a platinum production herd in 2023, selling Jersey branded milk directly into Sydney. The farm prides itself on an outstanding milk quality record of low somatic cell count, bacterial counts and high milk components.

The dairy operates 196ha of a predominately pasture-based farm system at Numbaa equipped with a modern 50-bale rotary, feed pad and two centre pivot irrigators utilising recycled water from a nearby town. They also run an additional 550 head across five leased properties with 140 ha of land nearby to run dry stock and grow corn and forage crops to supplement the milking herd and a further 488ha property at Gundagai to raise young stock.

Both David and Stew have a breeding focus on balanced, high type and production cows, complimented with good udders and longevity, they have used sires that will continue to improve each generation. North American genetics have played an influential part in their breeding program over the years. Many of the foundation cows in the Rivendell and Brunchilli herd have stemmed from the use of Lester Sambo in the early 2000s, Rapid Bay genetics in Canada and fastforward to today with Valentino, Victorious, Air and Virtuoso, being the most prominent sires in the herd and young stock.

Rivendell & Brunchilli’s most successful cow families include Vera, Tammy, Priscilla Maybelle, Violet, Passion, Noelene, Eileen and the Vita, all excellent cow families that have produced many champions and Excellent daughters. Today, the herd has more than 170 Excellent classified cows. Before their amalgamation, both Rivendell & Brunchilli had enjoyed great success in the show ring with a long history of championships, Premier Breeder and Exhibitor titles at International Dairy Week, Sydney Royal Easter Show, Melbourne Royal, NSW Jersey State Show and local shows spanning nearly two decades.

More recent achievements include Supreme Champion Sydney Royal Easter Show 2019, Reserve Junior Champion and HM Intermediate Champion of IDW 2023,

Supreme Champion NSW State Show 2023, Intermediate Champion NSW State Show 2023, Great Northern On-Farm Challenge Champion and Great Australian On-Farm Challenge 3-year-old winner 2023, Junior and Reserve Junior Champion NSW State Show 2024 and Reserve and HM Senior Champion NSW State Show 2024.

Rivendell Victorious Vienna was also awarded Senior and Grand Champion Jersey Cow at this year’s National Jersey Show at International Dairy Week in Tatura. (pictured below)

In 2023, Rivendell & Brunchilli hosted the Royal Rendezvous Sale at Sydney Royal Easter Show where 40 head were exhibited and shown before being auctioned live at Sydney Showgrounds.

The sale averaged $8308, with Rivendell Gentry Cleo achieving the highest price and going on to win Reserve Champion cow the following year at Sydney Royal with her new owners.

Riverlane Dairy is thrilled to be one of the member herds being visited by the World Jersey Conference Tour, and look forward to welcoming you to New South Wales in April!

Jamber farms is owned and operated by Robert and Ashley Wilson and family and located in Jamberoo NSW, about 90-minute drive south of Sydney.

They operate two farms in the local area, milking a combined total of 480 cows across about 550 acres.

The Jersey herd consists of the Jamber stud founded by Robert and the Burnside stud founded by Rob’s parents Mark and Marion Wilson. The Jersey herd is currently averaging 7199 litres 3.9%P 276KgP 5%F 355KgF over a 305-day lactation.

Robert says their goal is to breed profitable, functionable cows that can also excel within the showring. “Milk comes first but we also like functional, type animals that seem to have greater longevity,” Rob says. They are excelling in all fields at the moment.

Their most recent success was with Jamber Colton Veronica EX93 Max. She is owned with the Gavenlock family at Cherrylock Cattle Co and was crowned Grand Champion at International Dairy Week and champion cow at Sydney Royal in 2024. Veronica is a direct granddaughter of the one and only Huronia Centurion Veronica EX97.

John Flemming and his two brothers each received from their father a registered Jersey in 1937. That’s where the passion began. The brothers

When John and Gwen were married in 1954 they began the Miami stud milking 24 cows at Wingham, a little inland from Taree. The Miami name came from the spot they honeymooned, Miami Beach on the Gold Coast.

Soon after they purchased a bush and pasture farm at Bobin, North West of Wingham milking 33 cows and paid the farm off in 10 years.

1968 saw Miami with three children move to Blighty, near Finley in South West Riverina, to a 500 acre farm milking 100 cows. Mark was 6 years old. The Miami brand developed there, improving the irrigation property and showing large teams at local shows. Developing significant cow families, like Dawn, Gladys, Snowdrop and Eileen.

The Eileen family was instigated before the shift, when John had a purpose built float to drive down to Bemerside in 1963 and buy Eileen 240, the sister to the Royal Champion of Adelade, Sydney and Melbourne.

John and Gwen always made decisions that were best for the business, and if circumstances required the business to change geography, they did so. Drought sent them to Muswellbrook in the Hunter Valley in 1981 where they built a herringbone dairy and miked 120 cows and grew lucerne hay on stunning river flats.

The Hunter Valley farm was acquired by coal mining, but at the age of 66 John still wanted to farm. The 450 hectare sheep and cropping farm was purchased at Finley in 1996 and converted into a dairy with a rotary and extensive irrigation layout to milk 350 cows. Several lines of extra heifers were purchased from Denison Park, Dreno, Rosecroft, Brunetta, Glenbrae and Mannanarie to boost numbers. Many new cow families were developed from these lines.

Mark and Philippa sold their local 540 acre farm and took on the Miami property in the midst of drought in 2007, milking 450 cows, and John and Gwen retired to Wingham.

What a legacy to take on! John had used Bright Spot and the best of US sires to inject milk into a high production system. Then added Danish components. An incredible startup to add Philmar purchased families to. Took us a couple of years to consolidate, but we are so very proud of John and Gwen’s business acumen to continue to develop the Miami brand.

We are also very proud that the Jersey DNA has affected our sons. Brenton working with us since our shift to South West Victoria in late 2019.

MIKAYLA CROUCH

Mikayla Crouch, a 5th generation dairy farmer from La Bella Jerseys, Queensland, was the recipient of the 2024 ADY Travel Scholarship. She pursued a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Hons) majoring in Genetics at the University of Queensland, with her studies focusing on genomics, molecular biology, and ecology. Growing up on her family’s dairy farm ignited her passion for dairy farming, sustainability, and genetic research, which shaped her academic focus on bovine health, climate resilience, and sustainable agriculture.

As part of the scholarship, Mikayla undertook an exchange program at University College Dublin (UCD), where she gained global insights into cattle fertility, disease management, and methane reduction. Mikayla saw the opportunity to expand her knowledge of how different countries address challenges such as bovine diseases and climate change, applying this global perspective to her future work in the Australian dairy industry.

We don’t grow multi-species pastures overnight. They don’t miraculously appear in every paddock, perfectly green and ready for the cows to eat. They take time, determination, and patience.

The image above shows a pasture grown in Central Victoria. Dryland. No irrigation. No fertilisers, or pesticides / herbicides. Just SOILKEE. And a farmer who tried something different.

bit of history for you ... did you know?

THE GREAT BUTTER BOOM & "GOLD IN A CAN"

Before refrigeration, Australian dairy farmers in Victoria and NSW made their fortunes by producing salted butter for export- mainly to Britain. In the late 1800s, butter was called "Gold in a Can" because it was as valuable as gold! Some of Australia’s most successful dairy co-ops started during this time, paving the way for the industry today.

Fun Fact: Cobram, VIC, was once called the Butter Capital of Australia!

COWS BY BOAT – THE "OVERSEAS" JERSEY ARRIVALS

The first Jersey cattle arrived in Australia by ship in the early 1820s, carefully transported across the world on long voyages. Farmers would keep cows on board to provide fresh milk for the passengers, making Jerseys some of the first “overseas settlers” to set foot on Aussie soil!

Fun Fact: The first dairy cow in Australia (not a Jersey, but still legendary) escaped into the bush for four years before being recaptured- earning her a place in Aussie folklore!

AUSTRALIA’S FIRST DAIRY FACTORY – A WORLD FIRST?

Australia didn’t just follow the dairy trend- it led it! The first commercial cheese and butter factory in the Southern Hemisphere was built in Bega, NSW, in 1899 a name still famous for dairy products today.

Fun Fact: Some say Aussie dairy factories were so efficient that European cheese makers came here to learn modern methods!

THE WILD CATTLE DROVERS OF GIPPSLAND

Before roads, hardy Australian drovers moved cattle on horseback through rugged mountains and bushland. In Gippsland, Victoria, cattle were driven from farms to ports on foot, often through wild, untamed terrain. It was a dangerous, dusty, and very Aussie way to transport livestock!

Fun Fact: Gippsland's dairy history is so legendary that Australia’s first-ever butter train ran from Warragul to Melbourne in 1888, proving how essential dairy was to early Australia.

THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN "MILK WARS"

Not all dairy history is peaceful! In the 1930s-1950s, rival dairy processors and farmers fought over milk prices, sometimes leading to milk dumping protests-where farmers poured thousands of liters of milk into rivers rather than sell at unfair prices. Some cheeky farmers even smuggled milk across state borders to get better deals!

Fun Fact: In the 1970s, dairy co-ops pushed for the iconic milk carton design, making Australian milk easier to transport and store worldwide.

AUSSIE COWS LOVE THE BEACH!

Most people picture Australian farms as dry, dusty paddocks- but in Southern NSW and Victoria, cows actually graze with ocean views! Some of the country’s best dairy farms are located near the coast, where sea breezes and lush green pastures create perfect conditions for happy, high-producing Jerseys.

Fun Fact: Some farmers joke that their cows are "surf and turf" because they can hear the waves while they graze!

THE BIRTHPLACE OF MODERN AUSTRALIAN DAIRY

Victoria is home to leading dairy research facilities, including the Ellinbank Dairy Research Centre and AgriBio Research. These centers have pioneered advancements in feed, breeding, and sustainability practices, significantly influencing global dairy research

Fun Fact: Australia was one of the first countries to track dairy cow genetics digitally, long before it became a global industry standard.

DEVELOPING SUPERIOR JERSEY GENETICS SINCE 1960

For over six decades we’ve worked hand in hand with progressive Breeders to identify the best Australian Jersey genetics.

While breeders have developed superior cow families, we have progeny tested bulls from these elite females to identify the best genetics to help progress the breed. Today genomics has been a game changer and Australian Jersey breeders have embraced this technology and genetic progress has never been greater.

Our commitment has never wavered – generation after generation, we continue to source the strongest and most productive Jersey genetics in the industry.

At Genetics Australia we are proud to be the major sponsor of the World Jersey Conference to help showcase to the world the quality and depth of the Australia Jersey breed. We are also proud to have played a small part in making the Australian Jersey one of the world’s greatest dairy breeds.

Together we are creating the future of Australian Jersey genetics, generation after generation.

Brookbora Jerseys at Tennyson in Northern Victoria have been breeding elite Jerseys for over 60 years.
We thank Annabelle and George Harton for walking through the next generation at Brookbora.
