Welcome to our Summer 2024 season!

Jersey Arts Centre opened its doors overs 41 years ago now and we have been active across the Island for over 50 years because we started out as the Jersey Arts Council in 1970!

Our programme is designed to appeal to all tastes and so we hope that there will be many performances, exhibitions and courses throughout the spring that you will be inspired to attend.

Oddsocks Productions and Music Managed return to Coronation Park this summer between 29 July and 7 August - see pages 43 - 47 for the full detail of events. And Jersey Arts Centre’s youtheatre (The Wardrobe: 7-9 May), ACT ( Dracula: 25-29 May) and our Junior Drama Group (The Twits: 11+12 July) are all presenting great dramas this season, too…

In fact, Roald Dahl’s The Twits opens a completely new initiative: the Island’s first Children’s Festival. Jersey Arts Centre’s Children’s Festival is called playdays and we are presenting 40 events between 11-24 July, including Nicole et Martin in their famous White Tent at the Royal Jersey Showground. We hope to see you at many of the performances for play, adventure and discovery – details for playdays are on pages 28 - 42, and where you see this logo:

We would once again like to thank you all for your unparalleled support and encouragement throughout these past 40+ years – the challenges have sometimes been great – but your commitment to the work at Jersey Arts Centre has been even greater!

We look forward to seeing you here at Phillips Street and out-and-about during the summer. Take good care, stay safe and enjoy the experiences ahead!

With best wishes

Life Behind Barbed Wire

MONDAY 6 MAY - SATURDAY 1 JUNE

PREVIEW: TUESDAY 7 MAY 5.30PM - 7PM

Between 1942 and 1945, the Schloss in Bad Wurzach was used as an internment camp for those British nationals deported from Jersey. As there were almost 200 children under the age of 18 interned, school materials, paper and paint were delivered through the ICRC and the YMCA’s prisoner of war aid organisation. A large number of watercolours and drawings were created that now provide an insight into everyday life in the camp. Many of these images are now kept at the Jersey Archive, but many more are still in private hands. Curated by Gisela Rothenhäusler of the Bad Wurzach Partnerschaft Committee, and translated by Angela Francy, BEM.

Edmund Blampied: Children’s Books and Illustration

MONDAY 3 JUNE - SATURDAY 29 JUNE

Edmund Blampied (1886 - 1966) is regarded as one of the most eminent artists to come from the Channel Islands and is noted mostly for his etchings and dry points of Jersey landscapes and local life. However, while developing his skills as an etcher and lithographer in the early 1920s he worked extensively as an illustrator for magazines and book publishers and produced hundreds of political cartoons and decorative drawings for many publications. Some of his most successful illustrations were for children’s books of the period and this exhibition concentrates on his work in this genre bringing together many of the books he illustrated to reveal their beautiful covers and interior drawings that brought the stories to life. It will also include the twelve original watercolour paintings from his interpretation of Peter Pan, which is part of the Jersey Heritage collection, as well as his preliminary sketches for the At the Farm storybook that gives a fascinating insight into Blampied’s unique drawing and painting techniques.

A ‘must see’ exhibition for all members of the family.

Environmental degradation has led to unprecedented losses in both species and habitats and is estimated to affect the wellbeing of 40 per cent of the world’s population – 3.2 billion people. The devastation of these natural systems, including through climatic change, is most acutely felt by the world’s poorest – those who are least responsible for causing it and arguably the least well-prepared to withstand it.

Join Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) and experts from the RSPB and Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust for a discussion on how, through JOA’s Conservation Livelihoods theme, pioneering projects in Sierra Leone and Madagascar are tackling climate change, biodiversity loss and multidimensional poverty, in an integrated way.

Geographers of Solitude

Ballet d’Jèrri

FRIDAY 7 JUNE - SUNDAY 9 JUNE

7 + 8 JUNE 7.30PM / 8 + 9 JUNE 2.30PM

Ballet d’Jèrri joins forces with ZfinMalta, the national dance company of Malta, in a new work by ZfinMalta Artistic Director Paolo Mangiola. Twenty dancers come together to explore what unites the two islands through distinctive geographical and cultural landscapes.

Taking inspiration from the Arctic Tern, a bird known for having the longest migratory patterns on the planet, Geographers of Solitude is a conversation on diversity, the fragility of different voices, and fostering collective harmony. Just as these birds take shelter on both islands during their long journey, the dancers on stage explore both itinerant and protracted island life and the dynamic interplay between solitude and communal, on our individual and collective narratives. It delves into the notion of islands as a microcosm of the world at large – a contained environment where its inhabitants develop unique cultures and ways of organising societies.

Dracula

ArtsCentreTheatre

Adapted by Jason Kenyon from the novel by Bram Stoker

She comes in search of the last person alive who might believe her tale... and understands that the story may not yet be over.

Bram Stoker’s novel has been adapted and embellished upon in countless mediums; to the point where the story and characters, at times, bear little relation to the original.
