@jsyartscentre

Welcome to Spring 2023!

And to celebrating 40 years of Jersey Arts Centre.

We hope you have all remained well and safe throughout the autumn months and enjoyed your adventures in Wonderland during our extraordinary Christmas production. We also hope that there will be many performances, exhibitions and courses throughout the spring that you’ll be inspired to attend. Contained within these pages is our spring season as it currently stands though, as you might imagine, it may still be in flux with changes sometimes happening. We will therefore update this brochure when these changes occur, so do keep checking our programme of performances, exhibitions, courses and workshops on the website!

Over the weekend of 20-22 January, we will be celebrating 40 years with: Festival 40 Weekend! Everyone is welcome for champagne and cake at 6pm on Friday 20 January (our actual birthday day!) with 10 performances scheduled over three days to excite your imaginations and intellect. And do ensure you also visit the Berni Gallery to see the work of four Jersey artists who have created work straight onto the walls for our special celebratory exhibition. There are also many local societies performing throughout the season together with Amici Artium concerts and many more dramas.

We would like to thank you all for your unparalleled support and encouragement throughout these past 40 years – the challenges have sometimes been great – but your commitment to the work at Jersey Arts Centre has been even greater! We look forward to seeing you here at Phillips Street – elsewhere – and throughout the season.

Take good care, stay safe and enjoy the experience here!

The Other Side of Performance

Ladies & Gentlemen

all esteemed attendees

the house is now… a conception of three-sided rooms inhabited by an alchemy of family

We’re not confined by the corners of a ticket or the edge of a stage the boundary of a building or the coast of an island

Our wonderland / dreamscape is directed / prompted / shaped in the engine room / rehearsal space

Beyond each second of performance seen on stage there are unseen hours of creation / preparation / application concentrated / implemented / executed

There’s not a wrong or a right different people / different vibes / different synergy

In this company there’s no hierarchy we learn from everyone else’s skills everyone is valued / everyone is important

4

If you arrive in a mood we’ll lift your energy with syncopation / singing / palpable memory

Physical restriction’s a liberation we’re sophisticated / complicated / most inspired when instinctive

We trust in everybody we believe in everybody you can’t control that

How are we going to tell the story?

Plenty of nonsense Who am I?

Curious Who are you? Sssssh, stop it! I was loving the jazz Jersey Arts Centre is our second home welcome our house is now… open

Spring Forward

A time-constained Exhibition

MONDAY 9 JANUARY - SATURDAY 4 FEBRUARY

PREVIEW: MONDAY 9 JANUARY 5.30PM – 7PM

An exploration celebrating 40 years of Jersey Arts Centre by looking at where we might be in the world in 40 years’ time! With only 40 hours, over four days, to create their pieces, local artists have again been given the challenge of producing their work straight onto the Berni Gallery walls, using the above as a stimulus. Each artist had just 40 hours, in situ, to create and complete the work.

This exhibition follows in the footsteps of the previously successful 5×4 in 2006, Self Portrait in 2011, Conflict in 2014, Sporting Bodies in 2016, woman|man in 2016, Art 35 for Jersey Arts Centre’s 35th anniversary celebrations in 2018, the dance in 2018, Liberation 75 in 2020 and Jersey and the Crown in 2022.

After the exhibition has finished on Saturday 4 February, the gallery walls will be repainted, covering up the work forever. Don’t miss your chance to experience this unique exhibition –it won’t be there for long! The artists for Spring Forward are: Rob Allen, Michelle Le Cornu, Martin McDowell and Kerry-Jane Warner.

MONDAY 6 MARCH - SATURDAY 25 MARCH

“Every so often a milestone in your life allows you the opportunity to take stock, to look at what you have created and to share. This exhibition has allowed me to rediscover some of my favourite images. It’s an eclectic mix of portrait, colour, shape and design.”

Ansel Adams said: “There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.”

Each image should reflect some qualities of observation, humour and empathy for the subject and ultimately something of myself.”

Twelfth Night

Oddsocks Productions

MONDAY 16 JANUARY - SATURDAY 21 JANUARY

7PM (EXCEPT FRIDAY 20 JANUARY: 9PM)

It’s all about celebration as Oddsocks return to Jersey Arts Centre to mark its 30th year of visiting with a relaxed, cabaret-style version of Shakespeare’s hilarious, bawdy and mischievous play

Twelfth Night.

This unique, cabaret-style performance will be a party experience hosted by the Duchess Olivia and her hilariously pompous butler, Malvolio. Before the evening is out, you will have experienced the highs and lows of an epic love triangle, the ins and outs of a cross-dressing character disguise and the ups and downs of a ridiculously wrong romance all wrapped up with songs from a Britpop playlist. It’s Shakespeare’s seasonal comedy as you’ve never experienced it before.

A great Shakespearean party hosted by the inimitable Oddsocks!

One of Those Streets

Mezzanine Productions

FRIDAY 20 JANUARY - 7PM

One of Those Streets is a performance project exploring and excavating the multiple lives of a single building: a house, a home. Delving into the past and imagining futures, this is a story told through the very fabric of the building itself and the experiences of the people who have once lived there and who may yet make it their home.

Told through historical accounts and half-truths, memories and white lies, this story investigates the realities and myths of inter-generational living, familial and community connection and social isolation.

In a whirligig of film and visuals, movement and soundscapes, puppetry, installation and storytelling, a static address transforms into something dynamic and elusive: something alive.

Commissioned by Jersey Arts Centre to open its Festival 40 Weekend and sponsored by the Association of Jersey Charities with a 50@50 award.

Mezzanine Productions comprises:

• Simon MacDonald: playwright, performer, theatre maker and director

• Lisa MacDonald: painter, illustrator, maker

• Todd MacDonald: filmmaker, musician

• Lulu MacDonald: fine artist, sculptor

• Joss J. MacDonald: performer, physical theatre practitioner

• Christina Orchard: composer

Truth’s a Dog Must to Kennel

A Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh Production

SATURDAY 21 JANUARY - 5PM

The Fool leaves King Lear before the blinding. Before the killing starts. Before the ice creams in the interval. In this new solo work, Tim Crouch draws on ideas of virtual reality to send the Fool back to the future of the play he left. Back to a world without moral leadership or integrity; a world where wealth covers vice; where the poor are dehumanised; where the jokes fall flat. This daringly unaccommodated piece of theatre switches between scathingly funny stand-up and an audacious act of collective imagining. It is an adult take on the atomised world we live in now.

The Importance of Being Dr Adam Perchard

SUNDAY 22 JANUARY - 4PM

Join cabaret star and scholar Dr Adam Perchard in a romp through Oscar Wilde’s best-loved comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest. Performing some of Wilde’s most iconic scenes interposed with songs and stories from the Doctor’s own life, Adam reveals Earnest to be a dazzling hall of mirrors – mirrors that reflect our own twenty-first century world just as much as they do the glittering, decadent nineteenth-century society that Wilde was satirising.

The truth is rarely pure and never simple…

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

Adapted for the stage by Rona Munro / by arrangement with Nick Hern Books

youtheatre / Directed by Hettie Duncan and Nicole Twinam

WEDNESDAY 1 MARCH – FRIDAY 3 MARCH

“You, are my nightmare. You’re the heart of the horror. You’re woven through my imagination, as close as my own blood and breath. I will look at you. I will understand you. This is your story and I won’t look away again.”

A young scientist breathes life into a gruesome body.

Banished into an indifferent world, Victor Frankenstein’s creation desperately seeks out its identity only to be faced with cruelty and fear. Pushed into darkness by rejection and a broken promise, the creature sets out on a bloodthirsty and vengeful mission to seek revenge on its master.

Rona Munro’s “inventive feminist adaptation” (The Stage) of this Gothic masterpiece places Mary Shelley at the heart of the story, as she wrestles with her horrific creation and with the stark realities facing revolutionary young women then, and now.
