Welcome to Summer 2022! We hope you have all remained well and safe throughout the spring-time. This is now our 7th season since the start of the pandemic (including two on-line lockdown seasons!) and we hope that there will be many performances, exhibitions and courses this summer that you will wish to attend. Throughout 2021, Jersey Arts Centre presented 168 live performances with over 9,750 attendances at reduced capacities of 40, 80 and 125. Our audience capacity will remain at 125 from January 2022. However, we hope that from Monday 25 April we will return to 250 – though this is not guaranteed – as we navigate the pandemic throughout the late spring. Jersey Arts Centre remains committed to following all Government of Jersey guidelines in order to keep everyone safer and well. With the return of The Outside Track (5 July), Oddsocks’ Hamlet The Comedy (1-10 August), and the Summer Concerts at Coronation Park, we anticipate that you are going to have some incredibly fun, musical and dramatic nights with us. Contained within these pages is our summer season as it currently stands though, as you can imagine, it has been in constant flux with changes sometimes happening on a daily basis! We will therefore update this brochure when these changes occur and in order to add to the season when we are able – so do keep checking our programme of performances, exhibitions, courses and workshops on the website! We would once again like to thank you all for your unparalleled support and encouragement these past two years – the challenges have been great but your commitment to the work at Jersey Arts Centre has been even greater! We look forward to seeing you at Phillips Street, Coronation Park – and elsewhere – this summer. Take good care and stay safe. With best wishes

Daniel Austin | Director

Art Against War Sergei Sogokon and the Ukrainian Community in Jersey

MONDAY 25 APRIL - SATURDAY 14 MAY Ukrainian photographer Sergei Sogokon exhibits his collection of still life photography. All work is on sale: proceeds will go to Ukrainian relief charities. “The reflection and calm of my images are at odds with the current dynamic in Ukraine; they aspire to an orderly world where beauty is paramount, there is hope to offer and ultimately an acceptance of the transient nature of all living things. This wonderment that I chose to present to the viewer is being viciously challenged by what is happening in my homeland, Ukraine.

That said, these still life photographic compositions hark back to a traditional ethos that is very Eurocentric and convey the aspirations of my homeland to remain within the realms of that European concept.”

Jersey and the Crown A time-constrained Exhibition

MONDAY 23 MAY - SATURDAY 18 JUNE PREVIEW: MONDAY 23 MAY 5.30PM – 7PM

An exploration of Jersey’s unique relationship with the Crown to celebrate HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Each artist will have just 36 hours, in situ, to create and complete the work. This exhibition follows in the footsteps of the previously successful 5x4 in 2006, Self Portrait in 2011, Conflict in 2014, Sporting Bodies in 2015, woman / man in 2016, Art 35 for Jersey Arts Centre’s 35th anniversary celebrations in 2018, the dance in 2018 and liberation 75 in 2020. After the exhibition has finished on Saturday 18 June, the gallery walls will be repainted, covering up the work forever. The five Jersey and the Crown artists are: Eleanor Chambers, Amber Hahn, Michelle Le Cornu, Francesca Monticelli and Eliza Raine.

CAHUN - a retrospective

A new play by Jacqueline Mézec / Commissioned by Jersey Arts Centre In association with Jersey Heritage + Liberate

THURSDAY 14 JULY - SATURDAY 16 JULY 7.30PM

SUNDAY 17 JULY 3PM

Claude Cahun steps out of time, removes her masks, and takes us behind her enigmatic photographic self-portraits. She conjures up a Chorus of Cahuns to enact her extraordinary life story from a difficult childhood in provincial Nantes, via the political and creative excitement of Paris, to an idyllic retreat in Jersey, while always challenging conventions of gender and identity. During the Occupation, together with her life partner Marcel Moore, Cahun engages all of her skills as a writer and artist, risking her life to heroically resist the Nazis through her persona The Soldier With No Name. This new play by Jacqueline Mézec, commissioned by Jersey Arts Centre and directed by Daniel Austin, is provocative, inspiring and moving with its black humour, vivid storytelling and poetry. £18 (£13 STUDENTS/CHILDREN) MEMBERS: £15.30 (£11.05 STUDENTS/CHILDREN)
