Welcome to Summer 2023!

Jersey Arts Centre is now in its 40th year and our celebrations for Festival 40 Weekend in January were a huge success with over 1,250 at our 12 events: thank you all for your support.

We hope that there will again be many performances, exhibitions and courses throughout the summer that you will be inspired to attend. Contained within these pages is our summer season as it currently stands though, as you might imagine, it may still be in flux with changes sometimes happening. We will therefore update our website when these changes occur, so do keep checking our programme of performances, exhibitions, courses and workshops online!

As you will discover on pages 16 and 17, we are so very excited to announce that not only is Tim Crouch returning to Jersey Arts Centre – after the success of his award-winning show Truth’s A Dog Must to Kennel at Festival 40 Weekend – with another of his productions: I Malvolio, on Tuesday 16 May, but that he has also agreed to be our Honorary Patron for the next five years! There are indeed exciting times ahead!

We would like to thank you all for your unparalleled support and encouragement throughout these past 40+ years – the challenges have sometimes been great – but your commitment to the work at Jersey Arts Centre has been even greater!

We look forward to seeing you here at Phillips Street, across the Island, and throughout the coming season. Take good care, stay safe and enjoy the experience here!

FANTASMAGORIA

Marc Medland

MONDAY 3 APRIL -

SATURDAY 22 APRIL

PREVIEW: MONDAY 3 APRIL 5.30PM – 7PM

Marc Medland is an artist and illustrator. On show are his invented parallel worlds set in extreme situations such as war torn Venice, crumbling downtown New York, or a rocky beach in Aran. The characters are colonists who occupy and inhabit these places. They are often encouraged to participate in the creation and adaptation of their own dwellings. The projects are illustrated using architectural drawing, synthesised with collage. The use of plastic, artificial colour and stylised drawing as opposed to naturalistic representation enforces the idea that these places and people belong to the world of dreams... or nightmares.

Coast to Coast

Kay Pont

MONDAY 24 APRILSATURDAY 20 MAY

PREVIEW: TUESDAY 25 APRIL 5.30PM – 7PM

This exhibition is inspired by the North-west coast of England and the coastline of Jersey. The English dunes and wide seascape recall Jersey and thus, memories of the Island filter through and influence the paintings. Some images may be familiar while others borrow from the imagination to evoke a sense of place and space.

Lasallian Life

De La Salle College

MONDAY 22 MAY - SATURDAY 10 JUNE

PREVIEW: TUESDAY 23 MAY 5.30PM – 7PM

De La Salle College celebrates a year of art work from its talented students. The exhibition showcases the creative work of the very youngest to the oldest students, who share their experience of ‘Lasallian life’ through their personal reflections of the core Lasallian values: Respect for all; Quality Education; Concern for Poor/Social Justice; Inclusive Community; and Faith in the Presence of God. On display are: the winning entries for the Lasallian calendar; the winning tortoise trail design which expresses a respect for God’s creation and the unique value of all life; GCSE and A Level Art and Photography work showcasing the creative talent of these exam students; and portraits of King Charles III and Queen Elizabeth II created by year 8 students, celebrating an appreciation of their service over many years.

Heath Robinson Watercolours

A Heath Robinson Museum Touring Exhibition

MONDAY 12 JUNE - SATURDAY 15 JULY

Heath Robinson trained as an artist at the Royal Academy Schools and always saw himself as an artist. He earned his living as an illustrator and cartoonist, but he would spend much of the limited spare time he had either drawing or painting in watercolours. He might indulge his love of landscape or seascape painting, or pursue his experiments into light, colour, movement and abstraction. His children remembered him on holiday at the seaside, dressed in suit, collar and tie, setting up his easel on the beach or in a country lane to paint the scene before him. When painting for pleasure he was able to adopt a much freer style, executing sensitive impressionistic watercolour sketches. The combination of his facility with the medium and his distinctive vision means that although these pictures are mostly different from his commercial work, they are instantly recognisable as his. These paintings were not exhibited during the artist’s lifetime.

Perspective Entirely

MONDAY 17 JULY - SATURDAY 12 AUGUST

The work I make is through intimate study of buildings past and present, selected for their unique aesthetic, size and relationship with the viewer. I endeavour to extract personality from each structure with my mark-making. Defined by their surroundings, the architecture, rendered in charcoal, pen and ink, aim to provide intrigue and appeal for my audience. The buildings around us in Jersey have lived through history and taken on the burden of time. I want to share with you my views of what I consider to be some of Jersey’s most iconic works of architecture.

The Original Student Art Exhibition

MONDAY 14 AUGUSTSATURDAY 23 SEPTEMBER

The exhibition will profile the diverse and exciting creations of Degree level, Foundation and equivalent level students from Jersey.

A main feature of Jersey Arts Centre’s programme since it opened in 1983, the initiative has helped launch the careers of many local artists.

But do all stories have a happy ending?

Jazz Emu presented by London Limelight & ArtHouse Jersey

THURSDAY 27 APRIL + FRIDAY 28 APRIL

8PM

Direct from a sell-out, critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe, Jazz Emu brings his stand-up musical spectacular to Jersey. In 2016, Jazz Emu played the biggest gig he’d ever landed at the Helsinki Velodrome. But during his between-song patter, he carelessly insulted one of his biggest fans. What he said doesn’t bear repeating, but let’s say the Scandinavian Goblin community may never look him in the eye again.

Now he’s back to clear his name and regain his former glory. Will he be able to surmount the insurmountable and get every single person in the world to like him?

Or is it time to face the music?

Inspired by Islanders who experienced the events, this film tells the real story of the Nazi Occupation of Jersey from its beginning in 1940 to its end in 1945. Through first-hand personal interviews and rare film footage shot at the time, the documentary explores the wide-ranging effects that military occupation had upon the lives of those people forced to endure it. From both a social and historical perspective, Living with the Enemy is an important addition to this unique chapter in the history of the Island and World War II in general. £5

I, Malvolio

Commissioned by Brighton Festival & Singapore Arts Festival / Supported by BAC

TUESDAY 16 MAY

8PM

I, Malvolio re-imagines Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night from the point of view of its most notoriously abused steward. It’s a charged, hilarious and sometimes unsettling rant from a man adrift in front of a cruel audience. Part abject clown, part theatre-hating disciplinarian, Malvolio asks his audience to explore the pleasure we take in other people’s suffering.

I, Malvolio has toured the world since it opened in 2010 - from Shanghai to Sydney, from Moscow to Mumbai. This is a rare chance to see a performance by one of the UK’s most original theatre makers. Tim Crouch is an Obie-award winning performer, playwright and director. His plays include An Oak Tree, The Author, Adler & Gibb and Beginners.

The Ella Munro Band

FRIDAY 30 JUNE

8PM

Ella is a folk singer originally from the Isle of Skye but now based in Glasgow. In 2009, she was awarded a place at the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music, where she spent five years studying Scots and folk song. Ella then studied further at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. It was during this time that Ella formed the Ella Munro Band.

After supporting acts across the central belt, including the likes of the Paul Mckenna Band and Archie Fisher, the Ella Munro Band then became regulars on the folk club circuit around the UK and enjoyed performing across the country, from the Edinburgh Fringe to Durness to Jersey. Ella’s unique combination of folk song, Scots song and original songs has enraptured audiences across the country with the band able to both play foot-stomping upbeat songs to engage the entire audience but also perfectly execute a nuanced traditional ballad. Ella was a finalist for the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Award in 2017 and later successfully released her debut EP in 2018: The Final Trawl. Ella’s Summer 2023 tour encompasses venues across the UK and is not one to be missed!

ArtsCentreTheatre (ACT)

Adapted by Jason Kenyon from the book by George Orwell

WEDNESDAY 12 JULY - SATURDAY 15 JULY

7.30PM

ArtsCentreTheatre presents a new adaptation of George Orwell’s classic novel; a frightening vision of a dystopian future world that has inspired innumerable adaptations for the screen, stage and radio – and has inspired and influenced countless more programmes and productions since its publication in 1948.

Winston Smith is a middle grade worker at the Ministry of Truth chaffing against the rule of Big Brother, the omniscient leader of the State of Oceania. But... when love is a crime, when dissent is punishable by death, when simply having a disloyal thought can lead to your arrest and torture in the infamous Room 101... what hope is there for freedom?

Contains adult themes, strong language.
