SHH, IT'S HOT. OH-SO SPOT ON!

This issue feels like Déjà vu of the Editor’s note I wrote in 2009, saying “although my personal support system had been removed from me..I believe it is all in God's divine plan...” 16 years later, I agree with that statement verbatim.

Welcome to 2025. I’m super stoked to start this year with the re-imagined Spotlight magazine, which is bolder with, A New Look. A New Attitude!

As you flip through the pages, you’ll agree with this narrative, as you find that I have personally spilled 'hot tea' just for you [but a testimony for me]!

Thus, it’s fitting that in this inaugural issue after our two-year hiatus, I share with you, ‘A Leap Of Faith, my raw, unfiltered personal story that broke me into tiny little pieces...but take heart it’s not a pity party story...

What with our exclusive female business insights [FBI], as Deirdre Martin shares her intel on how to say no to 100 hours of grind and saying yes to finally ditching the hustle!

Plus the Scoop features challenging the status quo globally. Jonda Lowe, says God wants you to take your hands off his money, while Sandra Igwe lashes out on disparities facing black mums, as she connects you with women who share experiences, challenges, and triumphs on this beautiful yet complex journey of Black motherhood.

Jennifer Nash, xoxo

Just in time for Valentine's Day, we’ve got the exclusive scoop ‘Love-On-Air’ as Meghan brings her wholesomeness to Netflix and 'Oh So Important Sexual Welnness' feature, Hannah is challenging the women's health norms.

If all those red hot and sexy cover headlines didn’t get you intrigued, then let me whet your appetite with how Hollywood Actors are rescuing Terriyaki Chicken!

Finally bringing our THRIVE section to reality, now that you’ve got your copy, be sure to grab your spot and join me on my birthday February, 16th for a Sip n Read gathering virtual party where we’ll discuss the articles in full, exclusively ask me anything about my story because Togethe We Thrive!

No, it's not selfish to have an allBlack and mixed heritage team.

When I first started The Motherhood Group I was repeatedly asked “why is it only Black mothers that attend your interventions?”.

It was frustrating having to overexplain myself to people who didn't understand the disparities Black women face. That's why I'm incredibly proud of creating a team that reflects our ethos.

The Motherhood Group's Christmas team dinner moved me to tears, and I'm blessed beyond measure. Eight years of running this organisation, and I can honestly say this has been an incredible journey. And the journey is incredible because of the women I've encountered and brought along with me.

You see me collecting awards, speaking at conferences, and appearing on TV, but behind all of that are these incredible women who keep the wheels spinning. Those commissioned 50-page reports, those four-hour training sessions for healthcare practitioners, those detailed stakeholder proposals, our TikTok account - very little of that is me. Yesterday, I realised this is what sisterhood is about. This is what female social entrepreneurship is about - elevating one another for a common goal. That is truly special.

THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.

Blackmums is about sisterhood

Whether you're navigating pregnancy, adjusting to life with a newborn, managing toddler tantrums, or embracing the empty nest, Blackmums is about finding your tribe of Black mothers who get it. Connect with women who share your experiences, challenges, and triumphs on this beautiful yet complex journey of Black motherhood.

Create a profile that celebrates your unique motherhood journey. Share your experiences, interests, and parenting philosophy to connect with mums who truly get you.

It's a unique experience that many haven't yet grasped, but when they do, they'll understand ✨

To me, success means using your platform to build up others and having them support you in return Success means seeing a problem and collectively working to tackle it Each of these amazing ladies is proof that when we lift each other up, we all rise higher

Why You Must Take Your Hands Off God’s Money!

Once you have a solid customer tracking system, you have to make sure the business is making a profit, not just making sales and revenue. Knowing your numbers is the second financial success pillar

Do you know business is defined as organized for profit?

However, many businesses fail due to lack of cash flow and profit to sustain the business To avoid cash and profit leaks, we help our clients audit their expenses to understand potential leakage and make sure expenses are not growing faster than revenue To ensure everyone in the business is working on profit generating activities, we first have to define the most critical number in the business that moves the needle This critical number must be understood by everyone, tracked weekly and reported often. You are what you measure and therefore have a peace of mind financial tracking system, so you have timely weekly and monthly reports to gauge the financial health of your business and make timely decisions.

Keep in mind money does not have a brain and it is meant to be managed We are the brain behind it, and it has been a game changer for my clients to create a predictable profit plan to direct the resources to maximize the return on investments. Pricing is another key lever to increase profits; however, I have seen most business owners try to cut costs first before raising prices Lastly, most people overestimate how much they can accomplish in a year and having an annual budget is not sufficient to grow your business We help clients create a three-year strategic plan to ensure they have the runway to invest and operationalize their visions into financial reality.

The last pillar is knowing your people. People are your most valuable assets Attracting talent to your business is only the first step. Continuing to motivate and grow your team to support the missions and visions of your business to drive profits are the most important role as the CEO

Learning what it takes to effectively manage, not micromanage, your team and hold them accountable is a critical skill As your company grows, your business will become more complex and that is when we see more silos You will quickly find some of your people might not have the skills to grow with your company Many businesses lack the ability to invest in their team of continuous learning. Ongoing assessment of your team will help ensure you have the right talent at the right job Communication is not only a one-way direction and having an open-door policy and creating a high-performance culture builds trust and reduces attrition Keep in mind people quit because of their managers and hiring the right people to grow with your business will pay dividends to your business long term. Attrition is costly to your business, and it impacts your team, bottom line, and your clients We help clients establish a clear performance guideline and customize a pay for performance compensation plan for their business to help motivate, grow, and retain talents. Operation and Financial management are the foundation of your business to avoid leaving money on the table Creating a data driven company to gain customer insights, employee performance and follow the money will propel you to create a sustainable profitable business Bringing more money in without learning the financial strategy how best to spend, save and give, it will not change the financial situation. It does not help you spend, save, and give.

HOW TO RECLAIM

100+ HOURS

IN YOUR COACHING BUSINESS

(and finally ditch the hustle!)

I used to work 15-hour days when I started my business. Not seeing the return on investment for my time or effort, I soon felt silly and guilty. I barely saw my husband, kids or horse. And, I was on the slow road to going broke. At the end of the road was a dreaded 9-5.

Instead of automatically saying 'yes,' to every opportunity or meeting, ask yourself, 'If I say yes to this, what am I saying no to?' Maybe you need to stop having Zoom coffee chats or saying yes to every free opportunity that crops up.

Each time you say no to these things, your brain will try tricking you into believing your business won’t grow. But the reality is, you’re creating space for the opposite to happen. When you say 'no' more often, you have more time and energy for your ideal “paying” clients –the ones who energise you and get amazing results.

2.CreateBoringStandardOperating Procedures(SOP’S)!

You know when you have to do that occasional task, the kind you don’t do every day? The ones that take a ridiculous amount of time? The kind that, if you had the funds, you would outsource?

Seriously, I went grey in my first year in business because of those tasks. But then it dawned on me one day as I was setting up a pipeline in Kajabi that if I recorded my screen with Zoom and spoke aloud at the same time, it would give me a transcript. I could then save how I completed the random time-sucking task so the next time it had to be completed, I could quickly and easily follow the steps.

AI subscriptions can quickly add up. But, tools like Calendly can be game-changers. It saved me from writing 1.7k emails last year! Most AI tools offer free trials, so experiment and see what works for you.

If you're a busy coach looking to reclaim your time, start by opening up your calendar and politely decline or remove any non-needle-moving activities. Remember, saying no more grows your business.

As you complete business tasks, record yourself. Save your recording with a clear description so you and your future team members can easily find them.

POV By Jennifer Nash

A NOTE FROM HANNAH

Fed up of finding tampons next to pet food in the supermarket aisles, two years ago I decided I wanted to build a new kind of destination allowing people to find sustainable, non-toxic products to support their health and wellbeing. Based on my personal frustration that I had nowhere to go to find quality products to support my health, symptoms, and general wellbeing all in one place, I took matters into my own hands.

I quickly built a website, started selling products, and well, my experiment quickly became a real-life business. Unfabled began evolving.

We listened to members of our community, hearing their stories, and we knew we needed to do more. We began offering solutions for more symptoms, more categories – from sexual wellness, fertility, post-partum and menopause, to tailored care for conditions like PCOS and endometriosis. We’ve grown into a one-stop shop for all things menstrual and hormonal wellbeing, through each chapter of our lives.

Thank you for supporting our journey. Let’s write a new chapter in health & wellness together.

Much love, Hannah xx

We're on a mission to redefine wellness –finally centering our menstrual and hormonal health.

WITH LOVE, MEGHAN.

POV Researched & Written

Netflix has just unveiled the first glimpse of its latest offering, ‘With Love, Meghan’, a new series that invites viewers into the personal world of Meghan Markle. The nearly two-minute trailer, which dropped last week, is a sensory delight. It showcases Markle strolling through the rows of a pristine garden, handpicking vibrant blooms, harvesting golden honey straight from the hive, and kneading homemade bread with the kind of ease that makes you want to roll up your sleeves and join her.

Set against a backdrop of idyllic scenery, the series seems poised to blend lifestyle inspiration with intimate storytelling. Markle’s effortlessly charming presence is paired with the star power of a few famous friends, hinting at moments of camaraderie and collaboration in the kitchen. The show appears to celebrate connection - be it through food, nature, or heartfelt conversations - and reminds us of the beauty in simple, intentional living.

This venture marks yet another chapter in Markle’s evolving post-royal narrative. Known for championing causes close to her heart, the series seems to align with her passion for mindfulness and community. From tending to her garden to sharing the joy of a perfectly risen loaf, Markle appears to embrace the ethos of slowing down and appreciating life’s quieter moments.

‘With Love, Meghan’ has all the makings of feel-good escapism, but it’s more than that.

It’s an invitation to rediscover the beauty in everyday rituals and cultivate a life grounded in love and intention.

As the series promises to explore themes of connection and creativity, one thing is clear there’s plenty of love in the air, and we can’t wait to breathe it in.

The series premieres this spring. Will you be tuning in?

Even though my middle name is ‘FAITH’

The bad news I got 17 days before Christmas broke me into tiny little pieces...

OUR EDITOR SHARES A RAW, UNFILTERED PERSONAL STORY OF TRIALS AND TRIUMPHS

WOULD I LIE TO YOU?

That is the best sentence that I've picked up from a British television show. Dubbed the award-winning comedy panel show; suave host Rob Brydon and lightning-quick team captains David Mitchell and Lee Mack encourage their guests to tell the tallest of tales. Better still - Have I got news for you?

Well, what I'm about to share with you is no-modern feeble or a tale. So fasten up your seat belt as I shall say this only once. This is my confession of a black sheep...no wait a black year. The year that I'd like to forget...

But again - wait! Scratch that. It's the year that I would like to immortalise - because it was the best year of school of my

life in the UK yet. The lesson was so good! I actually want to frame the year 2024 and give it a 'Best Year Award' because it saved my life, literally!

Let me tell you this:- The TRUTH... The good and the ugly - because the truth will always set us free.

My life in the last 12 months has been a nightmare with a series of unfortunate events Anything that could possibly go wrong - went wrong - one thing after another! I will not detail all the things publicly and to protect the innocent and not-so innocent.

However, what I will say is it’s only during this period that I learned how ALONE and LONELY I’ve ever been...

In a country of 68.43 million no less - in a world of 8.2 billion souls because no one really knew?

That’s why today I wanted to use a drop of ink to make a million think [again] - to tell you my story - by speaking out and sharing this truth - just in case someone else somewhere is experiencing this mental anguish silently like I have for over a year now. I hope and pray you don't have to

To give you a bit of backdrop first: I left San Francisco in 2006 despite having received a scholarship for UC Berkeley, I chose the pursuit of a 2.0 happy ever after - a second marriage Continued on next page.

Fast forward; I moved to the UK in 2010, with a promise of a brighter and better future after losing my business [Je t’aime] to the effects of the 2008 -2010 recession at its peak. I had no choice but to close the shop and accept hubby’s strong and persuasive suggestion to move to the UK for a ‘fresh start’and fresh it was…

I had to forget EVERYTHING I KNEW ABOUT LIFE, and I kid you not!

My strong independent black woman, personal discipline and survival instincts that I’d built from my childhood way into my twentyone years of adulthood. Mind you 10 of those 21 years, I had lived and worked in the USA [where I practised chasing the American dream everyday], and the first part of it had been in my native country Zambia [where I honed my survival skills]

So armed with what I proudly termed as my trans-Atlantic citizenship - I skipped and hopped into the uncharted waters of this Great British part of the United Kingdom

Little did I know that with that move - I had branded myself as a cultural misfit and outsider - both in England (as I was told early on that I was too Americanised because apparently I’d come to the UK with a typical American guns-blazing attitude)..

MY STRONG INDEPENDENT BLACK WOMAN, PERSONAL DISCIPLINE AND SURVIVAL INSTINCTS THAT

I’D BUILT FROM MY

CHILDHOOD...

On the other hand, whenever I went to my native home country Zambia (I was termed as ‘ some of us ' a derragotry term reserved for people with a perceived adopted foreign accentoften told we have defectors who have no business claiming to be Zambian

None of the above were in of themselves - the problem; but are some of those jabs that chipped away at my confidence piece by piece so much so that over the years, it culminated into me losing my ‘mojo as they say…thus my identity crisis began.

For over 15 years now since I moved to the UK, I have silently suffered from a low self-esteem and an identity crisis Only until now; I had not pinpointed that [well until my life began to unravel in the last 12 months] and I began to see the effects of it piece by piece By this time, I realised I’d lost all contact with my support system - my friends and family.

I was all alone. Ultimately, I’d resorted to playing a Desperate Housewife of Gerrards Cross! Looking back, Covid didn’t help -Yeah! Because I'd graduated from my PR and Advertising BA - in the middle of it - in August 2020 - Couldn’t get clients right away

It took almost 15 months to sign up my first client.

- By April /May 2021 I had 5 high ticket clients and I was earning c£15k p/m in MRR

- All while I was floating like a Swan above the water, I was peddling like mad down below, because the storm of my personal life was raging in the background

- And just like that - by the end of 2021 - I lost all 5 clients... Lights out. Period.

By April 2022 - I was in way over my head Had a debt of over £70k [including student loans], lost my home [and by July this year my car too] and started living in other people’s homes. What started as a romantic notion of being a glamorised house sitter in a modest 4-bedroom house in April 2022 ended up being a nomadic lifestyle I'd not bargained for.

All the while, little by little, my personality, passion and purpose became diluted I started to give up my rights, values and beliefsbecause I wanted to fit-in. To be accepted in my new country, culture and to longer be told I was the outsider who didn’t fit in the mould, or be a butt of other people’s jokes or gossip - [both in UK and Zambia].

So I gave in - to their expectations of who I ought to be; while giving up the true identity of who I truly was.

By November 2022, I made a catastrophic decision [against my better judgement] to go and work in corporate ‘like a normal human being - they’d told me ’ By now you all know [because I've told this part of the story a few times] how that did nothing but diminish my confidence even further, and also tainted my reputation as an Entrepreneur. This led up to the deja vu of housesitting another housedespite my gut instinct not to - I chose to stay in my comfort zone and live out my fantasy lifestyle.

Well until October, 2024when reality set in. I was homeless. In fact; looking back - I had been homeless for 2 years; but had covered it up with the housesitting fairy tale just so I could feel better about my rude awakening that was painfully imminent.

While due to low self esteem, I had already stopped being present to my audience back in early 2022, now after the corporate gig contract ended just became bitter and resentful.

Lost my positive vibe and optimistic personality.

First I stopped taking care of myself, no beauty treatments - no manicures, no hair dressing [resorted to perpetually wearing wigs] -

Went from the glass is always half full to a negative Nancy, who moaned and complained about everything. Oh, and blamed everyone else for my own shenanigans - but myself. all the while - I took no responsibility for my life. Instead I started coasting along and picked up a lazy and dependency syndrome back burner seat - because it was easier to be codependent than to deal with the conflict and the perceived lack of humility that apparently my fiercely independent streak brought about.

It was easier to compromise my values, beliefs and purpose than fight battles I knew I’d not win. At least not in that environment anyway. Slowly but surely, I became a mummified version of myself. Before I knew it, I had lost my idealistic focus on my visions, I’d lost my pragmatic moral ambition and my work ethic sunk I stopped dreaming and indeed lost the passion to pursue a purpose driven life. In the process, I started losing everything that I had worked so hard for all those years.

Not only had I lost my corporate job [no - I was actually forced to resign from, another story for another time] - but I was also ‘coerced’ to live a life I had not chosen for myself. Coerced by human forces that controlled my life [because I had unknowingly and unwittingly given them consent to do so] most of us do this unconsciously - we give away our power and rights to exist on our own terms - through compromise, coercion, manipulation and other subtle but very effective mind altering persuasive games. [to fully grasp this concept read Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini it’s on my book recs]. It literally opened my eyes - 3 months ago!

That being said, however, to this day, it still baffles me how this plot to rid me of my identity was orchestrated - but what I do know is I passively participated in the killing of Jennifer Faith Limula. Now replaced by an empty shell, bitter angry black woman who I barely recognise.

So if you ’ re reading this and wondering - what the heck happened to me…this is it. I died. TBC in next issue. Be sure to grab your copy here

It's Not New, It's True: Chakras and

Christianity

For God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2

Timothy 1:7

Every good and perfect gift is from above coming down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow or turning. James 1:17

I like to consider myself both a woman of faith and a woman of science. One of my greatest joys was teaching physical science to high schoolers. Lab days were always the best days. I lectured the students at the beginning of labs, “safety first”, every single time. Once that message was given, I loved jumping into whatever experiment we were conducting that day.

Chemistry day – lighting the different elements on fire to see what color they burned

Oh yeah! Physics day – building pully systems and exploring how to do more work with less effort. That was exciting, too.

Another great joy is studying I like words. I like breaking open my Bible and the Strong’s Concordance and looking up the Hebrew and Greek words to peer beyond the surface meaning of those words. Some people adhere to the King James Version of the Bible only. If that’s you, that’s great! That translation is rich with depth and meaning. But I enjoy exploring different translations and getting to the root of the words.

You may wonder why I’m starting off with the verses I did and with explaining that I loved teaching science.

You might even think I’m a bit of a nerd to admit that I love to study. That’s okay. The verses I’ve shared and the points I will make come together in my mind when discussing chakras from a Biblical, Christian point of view. I will explain how, but first I will acknowledge these points when it comes to talking about Christians, the Bible, and chakras:

As far as we see in any English translation of the Bible, the word “chakra” is nowhere to be found. When we search the internet for information on chakras almost all of the information we come across is written from what many people would call a New Age point of view. Many of the websites themselves call themselves "New Age." That’s pretty convincing.

From HERstory to SHEeo, a new wave of branding is taking hold in women-led businesses.

“HER” sometimes spelled H3R - isn’t just a clever twist on language it’s a powerful statement. It signals a shift from quietly participating in business to boldly owning the narrative. But what does this trend really mean? Are women “foundHERS” suddenly woke, or is there something deeper at play?

Let’s be clear: women founders excuse me, foundHERS aren’t suddenly “woke.” They’ve always been awake to the inequalities they face, the challenges of shattering glass ceilings, and the fight for space in industries often dominated by men What’s different now is their refusal to downplay their identity. By putting “HER” front and centre, they’re not just building businesses; they’re building cultural shifts.

Using “HER” in a brand name or business title isn’t just a clever play on pronouns It’s an act of defiance and reclamation. It flips the traditional script, placing women at the forefront of spaces where they’ve historically been sidelined. It says, “We’re not just here to contribute; we’re here to lead,

Critics might call it trendy or performative, but that critique misses the point. These names resonate because they’re steeped in meaning. They’re about women proudly declaring their place in the business world without apology. They’re a rallying cry for representation, a nod to the women who paved the way, and a flag planted for those yet to come.

This shift is more than marketing; it’s intentional empowerment It reflects the reality that visibility matters Seeing “HER” in big, bold letters is a reminder to women everywhere that their stories, ideas, and leadership belong here. It’s about creating a legacy of ownership and shaking up norms that have long gone unchallenged.

For those who find the trend over-the-top or confrontational, well, that’s kind of the point It’s meant to provoke thought, to inspire change, and to make people uncomfortable with the old ways of doing things. It’s a deliberate act of cultural disruption.

that show that women understand the stakes, the struggles and the triumphs of carving out a space in a competitive, and often inequitable, world What’s changed is their audacity to make it known

The rise of “HER” in branding isn’t just a trend it’s a movement. It’s about taking up space, rewriting the rules, and ensuring that no one can hit snooze on women’s voices anymore. This isn’t just clever wordplay; it’s a declaration: HER time is now
