The modular floor system allows for customization of the plan to move to new areas and be adjusted around existing plant-life and not destroy the surrounding environment.

Th e s t r ucture is m o s t l y op e n t o the elemen t s w i t h ca n v a s wall paneli n g a n d th e o p e n grid stru c t u r e , bu t c a n be adjuste d to p r o t ect from ha r s h we a t h e r .

T h e goal of the project is for n a t u re to be the focal point and t h e structure to be “barely there” b y u sing materials of various t r a n sparency and by seemingly f l o a ting above the ground. The g l a s s floor panels are inspried by a r c h eological sites where they use t h i s technique to not destroy what is t h e r e and allow people to study what i s b elow.

PRIVACY Privacy is extremely important to people who live in big cities and especially important to immigrants who are just moving and losing the comfort and stability of their home country. In my building, it is important to endorse privacy between residents and allow them to connect with others as the wish and when they wish.

THE BLOCK

There are 3 different block designs used, the plain L-shaped block, the completely open block, and the partially open block. The plain blocks are offset from the open and partially open blocks in order to create the puzzle effect on the facade. The corner condition is the most used throughout the building in order to create bas-relief on the facade, accentuated through the different face blocks. The holes in the block creates an interesting condition for light inside of the building

Bas ed o n t h e i m p r e s s i o n t h a t c a v e d w e l l e r s f i n d thrill as well as a s en se o f c o m f o r t i n th e u n c o m f o r t a b l e d a r k n e s s and uncertainty fou nd i n c a v e s , t h e r e se a r c h c e n t e r b e c o m e s a m o dern cave, providing spe ci fi c e l e m e n t s t h a t a c a v e m u s t p r o v i d e . T h e s e include shelter, dar kn es s, c o n t r o l l e d l ig h t , a n d l e v e l s a s w e l l a s the feelings of dis co ve ry , f o g g i n e s s , an d u n c e r t a i n t y . S i n c e t h e forms are natural and bas ed o n t h e e a r t h , t h e s p a c e b e c o m e s a n e x t e n s i on of the cave, the mod er n ca v e .

C A V E

Each space within t he modern cave becomes a natural geologica l form that are layered at half levels, providing a sense that one is within a com plex cave system. Each floor is open to be low less and less, to a point where one can only see what is below if they decide to travel deeper into the cave. The circling ramps through the building allow for an experience and discovery when eme rging at each floor.

Since the walls are not placed on a typical grid, but rather shifted and carved away at, it creates the experience of discovery as one mov es from space to space.

The various interior views of the research center show how the walls are shifted and carved away from the whole, creating a feeling of confusion and discovery as one moves from space to space.

SITE DESIGN The sculptural plates emerging from around the site allow for the same sense of discovery as the researchers travel the site and are an extension and depiction of the cave system uprooting all around the site.

The modern cave emerges from the ground and looks naturally formed, with the floor plates creating the impression that they have just emerged from the ground as seen in this model and the previous sections with the shifting floors and zig-zag carving.

Wi t h i n t h e w a l l s , a re openings looking th r o u g h t o t h e r e s t of the space, which ac t a s d i s p l a y a r e a s for the musician’s a l t o , t e n o r , a n d b a r i t o ne saxophones. These o p e n i n g s a l s o a l l o w for the music played i n t h e c o n c e r t s p a c e to flow through the house.

In the warmer months, the main concert space c a n a l s o b e o p e n e d to the porch, which consists of doors that all o w f o r v e n t i l a t i o n through the house. The downstairs space is the m o r e p r i v a t e p a r t of the house, but the curved staircase allows f o r t h e n a t u r a l flow down and to another outdoor space before e n t e r i n g t h e private area.
