CLINICAL ACHIEVEMENTS IN NEONATAL CIRCUMCISION

Under the direction of Dr. Keara De Cotiis, the Pediatric Urology Division at Nemours Children’s Health-Delaware has a new initiative to improve access to neonatal circumcisions. The Pediatric Urology team started a dedicated circumcision clinic in addition to those scattered throughout our Nemours clinics already to accommodate our growing referral base. Every Wednesday there are 9-12 circumcision slots with parents receiving a thorough prep sheet so they are quite comfortable prior to the procedure. The circumcision clinic was extended down to our Nemours Milford location, where it is possible to do between 6-8 procedures during those clinics. The program offers Mogen, Gomco, and Plastibell circumcisions depending on the provider or parent preference. After the procedure, parents get a care packet as well as instructions for home care. The team has performed over 300 neonatal circumcisions in 2021, averaging around 75 circumcisions/year previously. According to Dr. De Cotiis “This program has been a success by allowing trained pediatric urologic surgeons to offer this care to newborn infants. We should be on target to do almost 400 office circumcisions by the end of the year.”
