Dr. Chung to Speak at Israel Space Conference
As Principal investigator on one of the 2022 Rakia Mission space station scientific studies, Dr. Paul Chung was invited to participate in the 17th Ilan Ramon International Space Conference in Israel. The conference is held in honor of Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli astronaut who perished in in the fatal mission of the Columbia shuttle, in which he and six other crew members were killed in the re-entry accident. Details on Dr. Chung’s upcoming International Space Station research study can be found on page 4.
Dr. Hubosky in Dubai

Dr. Mike Grasso, 1992 Jefferson residency graduate along with Dr. Scott Hubosky at the Société Internationale d’Urolgie (SIU) in Dubai, UAE, in November 2021.
Dr. Scott G. Hubosky, Professor of Urology, attended the 41st Congress of the Société Internationale d’Urolgie (SIU) held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Nov.14, 2021. This was one of few academic meetings actually held as an “in-person” event during the last two years.
Dr. Hubosky, together with Jefferson Urology alum, Dr. Michael Grasso III of New York Medical College and European endourology expert, Dr. Olivier Traxer of Sorbonne University in Paris, served as faculty for the instructional course, “Advanced Ureteroscopy.”
Updates on the latest ureteroscopic instrumentation, as well as stone and upper tract tumor treatments, were presented, along with strategies to avoid complications.

Jefferson India Center

Drs. Mat Thakur and Leonard Gomella with Dr. Richard Derman, Director, Global Health Research and Professor, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Dr. Lauri Romanzi who recently joined Jefferson’s College of Population Health and Vice-Chancellor of KLE University in Belgaum, India, Dr. Vivek Saoji.
Dr. Vivek Saoji, Vice Chancellor of KLE University in Belgaum, India and home to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, visited Jefferson in December, 2021. Drs. Gomella and Thakur reviewed progress in our joint Urology research program in the urinary detection of bladder and prostate cancer. The lab effort in India is led by Dr. Raj Nerli, Chair of Urology at KLE. The group along with Drs. Derman and Romanzi also engaged in preliminary discussions to develop joint Jefferson/KLE training programs for residents and fellows.
Dr. Vittorio Canale Guest Resident

Drs. Gomella, Lallas and Marino presenting a certificate to visiting Italian Urology resident Dr. Vittorio Canale. Dr. Vittorio Canale participated in a specially arranged 6-month observership in our Department. Dr. Canale is a 2017 graduate from the University of Rome La Sapienza Medical School and is currently a senior resident in Urology at the Policlinico Umberto Hospital of the University of Rome. Dr. Canale’s visit was facilitated by Dr. Ignazio Marino, Professor of Surgery at SKMC and Executive Director of Jefferson’s Italy Center. Dr. Costas Lallas served as his primary mentor while at Jefferson. According to Dr. Marino “The Department of Urology at Jefferson is recognized nationally and internationally as having a premier urology training program. I look forward to having other residents from Italy spending time with Urology’s outstanding faculty and hope one day to provide Jefferson’s residents the opportunity to participate in one of the Italian urology programs. While at Jefferson, Dr. Canale was engaged in a project studying the role of novel biomarkers in the diagnosis of upper tract urothelial carcinoma with Drs. Hubosky and Gomella. PERUVIAN UROLOGY SOCIETY Dr. Leonard Gomella served as a faculty member for the Peruvian Urologic Society. The virtual ZOOM webinar meeting was held on July 16, 2021. The meeting focused on the latest developments in genetics and genomics in the management of prostate cancer. The meeting presentations were simultaneously translated into Spanish.

HONG KONG UNIVERSITY The HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE) is a secondary education institution in Hong Kong. The School is a private subsidiary of the publicly funded University of Hong Kong. The HKU School specializes in professional education. During their May 2021 multi-day workshop "Advanced Workshop on Genomic Testing and Genetic Counselling for Hereditary Cancers", Dr. Leonard Gomella was a faculty member for this internationally broadcast program. Dr. Gomella was asked to address “Prostate Cancer and the Genetics of Disease Risk and Management” and participated in a virtual question and answer session with participants from around the world.
