Welcome New Jefferson

Please welcome our new full time Department of Urology faculty members Whitney Smith, MD and Patrick Gomella MD, MPH. Drs. Smith and Gomella are primarily assigned to our expanded JUP practice at Abington/Asplundh and will work in coordination with Drs. Chandrasekar, Mann and Lallas. Drs. Smith and Gomella will also participate in the teaching, research and research activities on the Jefferson Center City campus.

Our new JUP full-time practice began seeing patients at the Asplundh Cancer Center, Willow Grove, in August 2021. The Abington 302 Price Building renovations for Jefferson Urology are set to be fully operational in early 2022.

Our Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center Urology cancer care providers will continue seeing patients at the Asplundh Pavilion.

WHITNEY SMITH, MD

Dr. Whitney Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology. She graduated from Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, and received her M.D. from The New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ. Her general surgery internship and urology residency were completed at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She served as Chief Resident in Urology at Jefferson from 2017-2018. Dr. Smith went on to complete a two-year fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, NC under Drs. Catherine Mathews and Gopal Badlani. Her clinical fellowship included the care of both female and male patients. Dr. Smith has clinical and research interests in robotic surgery, voiding dysfunction, diversity and inclusion, and improving resident education. She is looking forward to returning to the Department of Urology and will be primarily based in our full-time practice at Abington Hospital.

PATRICK GOMELLA, MD, MPH

Dr. Patrick Gomella is an Assistant Professor of Urology with a joint appointment in the Department of Surgery. He earned his B.S. in Biology from the Pennsylvania State University and remained active in emergency medical services as an EMT with the University Ambulance Service, serving as the Company Supervisor his senior year. After completing paramedic training, he became a nationally certified EMT-P. At Thomas Jefferson University, he earned a Master’s Degree in Public Health followed by a medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College. He completed a residency in urologic surgery at George Washington University. Following residency, he was a Society of Urologic Oncology fellow for two years with the Urologic Oncology Branch at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland and completed an additional year at the NCI. Dr. Gomella is excited to return to the Delaware Valley to provide general and advanced specialty urologic care in the Jefferson Health System. In addition to continuing his urologic oncology research, he has a particular interest in medical education and looks forward to training the next generation of urologists.

Amazing Progress in Prostate Cancer
