A LETTER TO OUR SUPPORTERS

DEAR FRIENDS,

When we started in 2021 our project was to use sport and basketball to address development and peace to youth players in Cameroon. We aim to recognize a concept that has great potential: utilizing basketball to bring individuals together across divides and enhance social skills among participants. We firmly believe that meaningful learning and playing interactions can revolutionize skill acquisition and social sport programs. In the sadly unique context where sports are used solely for talent discovery in Cameroon So much so that we launched a new type of after-school program in July 2022 called JAF HOOP SCHOOL AKONO, where kids from Akono city in Cameroon participate freely in biweekly sport development sessions throughout the 2022/20223 school year.

Not only did we organize a big event like Run 4 Jaf or the JAF Hoops School Summer Tour to enhance awareness of the sport for development movement. Our goal is to challenge the perception that sport is limited to the most talented individuals and performances. Our aim is to open up new perspectives on how sport can be used as a tool to bring people together, and enhance social skills in young individuals. In addition to other skills, they can acquire new ones that will be highly beneficial for their life journey.

The Grass Roots Need

Although international sporting events and competitions have increased in Cameroon in recent years, most of the infrastructure built for them is still not accessible to the middle and low-income communities In the area of the city of Akono and the area of Mvolye in the city of Yaoundé, we checked that most sporting events and programs lack quality playgrounds, poor management structure, the local elite is not actively involved, and there is low interest of girls

(aged 6-18) involved in leisure sport activity are lacking for safe and regulated environment both Akono and Mvolye(Yaounde) sport communities

Our solution

59%

Injuries occurring during physical activity for youth people are caused by no exigencies on play surfaces or protective equipment, or by lack of strict rules.

This academic year, we took on the challenge of ensuring that our activities were conducted in a safe, healthy, and regulated environment for our JAF members and participants For this, we carried out main activities: JAF HOOP SCHOOL AKONO, which was our main activity The goal was to promote citizenship and entrepreneurship among Akono youth through basketball We organize and support SPORT BASKETBALL EVENTSs to promote our commitment to raising awareness of sport in a healthy, safe, and standard environment.

Sport for development activities conducted

The beginning of our jaf hoop school session, it was divided into two parts: the first hour was reserved for the learning of drawing techniques conducted by one of our coaches who studied design at university The second instead focuses on teaching the basics of basketball (rules, field, technique) One of the best lessons we learned is that sport is not a magic wand like the one in the Harry Potter saga We expected that the kids, because of the gratuitousness of the activity and the sports offered, would be many and involved in the program, given that there are no other such activities in the area Indeed, especially in sub-Saharan African countries in the backward areas of the big cities, sports are still an activity that is not essential to everyday life To make a change in October 2022, we organized two awareness campaigns in two principal primary and secondary schools and one on market day in Akono city These campaigns made it possible to attract more than 120 percent of children to the next JAF hoop school the next day, a sign of the interest aroused in the community, but slowly over time, many of the new ones did not show up at the following sessions, a sign of our difficulty keeping them interested in our activities To address these concerns we conducted interviews with parents local coaches and students The most reported problem was the distance between the playing field and home; many of the children in the afternoon are committed to helping their families at work and home (which, for the most part, are local farmers); the prohibition of parents to continue the activity at JAF caused to their indiscipline behavior and disappointing school results; the lack of interest in our activities; and the late arrival at the sessions (most showed up only for the basketball part) In December 2022, we decided not to accept anymore students who come only for basketball practice, and we had the opportunity to upgrade our design class by replacing the drawing session with the toolbook "Design for Change in Marginalized Communities," created by our friends Pacollaborative

As for the sports part, we have restructured our activities of basketball training taking more inspiration from manual "Basketball 4 Life" Namibia (Namibia,GIZ,en), we can find manual like this also for other sport at https://www sport-for-development com/ we also reviewing our principal goal during basketball session , which is not to necessarily teach the correct technical gesture but instead to put in the main topic the selected life skills and create exercises that highlight them during the basketball session These radical changes have pushed a lot of other students to drop out but allowed the more daring ones to express themselves more and feel more involved; for example many of them started showing up on time Clearly we had to discuss with our coaches that they were moving beyond being simple sports teachers,to becoming true educators In order to be able to carry out initiatives of this kind, we must focus on the education of the participants, but above all, the educators role is fundamental in developing programs that have a real impact on the beneficiaries

JAF Youth week tournament 2023

What a journey!!! In honor of Cameroon's Youth Week, which is held every year on February 11th The Jeanne d'Arc Foundation had the chance to host their first JAF Youth Day Tournament in the beautiful city of Akono After three months of planning and preparation, on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, from 11 a m to 4 p m , with 50+ participants, the event was a premier not only for our JAF kids but also for our JAF instructors, JAF volunteers, local institutions, stakeholders, and the kids' families

Coordinating logistics, food preparation, and the welcome of different stakeholders needed for the event’s success were not easy at all, but the JAF staff team did a wonderful job Our JAF coordinator manager, Do Rufine, visited the local authorities a day before the event to invite them, planned with the JAF parent team the meal plan for tomorrow, and installed the JAF event banner at the crossroads of Akono city with the help of our coach Tamba

Before leaving Akono, our members from Yaoundé, the capital city, met with Akono members to ensure that all activities would take place the next day

Jaf's youth day started with our head basketball coach Clemence, her assistant coach Junior, and JAF coordinator manager Do Rufine going to Akono They arrived at Stoll College Akono around 9:15 a m Previously, they made a stop at one JAF parent's voluntary house, family MBAKU, to make sure that food preparation was going well

When they arrived in the field, they found our JAF art and skills coach Anicet, some learners, and the animation staff working to set up the tent, chairs, and equipment for the animation of the event Learners will come to the field one after another, as many are still in school A representative of the Special Commissioner for Akono City Public Safety will arrive by 11:30 am to be sure the organization is respecting the safe guidelines

The number of students attending primary and secondary school from various communities in Akono will soon increase Our coach coordinator, Tamba, started a funny series of warm-up exercises to engage them A few moments later, we will be visited by the sports representative, the police commissioner, and the brigade commander, who is a relative of one of our students

KEY NUMBERS

A few moments later, some local authorities take time to visit and celebrate with us not only the sports representative, Mr Mbappé, but also the Akono city police commissioner and the Akono city brigade commander

JAF coaches and parents, but definitely JAF learners, were the stars of the day Everyone was involved and hands-on with refereeing, coaching, table officiating, and ensuring that food was distributed efficiently

Around 12:30, the coaches, after a long and funny warm-up, start to divide the participants into four different gender-mix teams After The four teams formed, the official kick-off of the first match is given The following are the schedule results for each game:

Game 1 opposed Team Cédric # Team Cardinal, the score was 0322,

Game 2 opposed Chearone Team # Junior Team, the score was 1317,

After a little break the final game start at 2 pm

Team Cardinal played against Junior Team, the score was score 3812,

The first time winner of JAF Youth Day Tournament was Team Cardinal

Believe me, Team Cardinal celebrated with crazy joy and enthusiasm, but we liked the fact that they also congratulated and celebrated their opponent, and that's how we teach and want them to play and enjoy sports

Follow the game, we host a little award ceremony

& Jaf Hoop School Awards 2023

Since the launch of our sports and social activities in 2021 at Akono Stoll College We were able to see the enormous will of the young people of the city but their parents to participate in our activities We wanted to offer a mini-marathon bringing together the entire akono community around sport; but it will help us to better present and support our activity that combines basketball practice and art workshop skills that today is completely free for our learners Recalling that for the success of our main project that to offer the opportunity for young people between 8 and 14 to be able to train physically, mentally but above all intellectually through our activities; there will be a need for synergy between the local community, its representatives and social/educational actors such as our association JAF , the schools, possible sponsors, local patrons The project called "RUN 4 JAF AKONO 2023 & Jaf Hoop School Awards 2023" aims to bring together the community akono around a sporting event and at the same time pick this opportunity to raise awareness of our extra programJAF HOOP SCHOOL which takes place throughout the school year at akono stoll college

THESTART

This year was a pivotal exercise in measuring and evaluating our overall impact in Cameroon

We still strive to build and consolidate a safe and healthy environment for youth basketball players. We have decided to reduce our involvement in the construction and maintenance of sports infrastructure. Our focus has shifted to implementing a new form of sport that is crucial for empowering youth players.

THEPROCESS

Pursuing our activities in Akono, we have prepared and launched an afterschool program called JAF HOOP SCHOOL AKONO. The goal was to teach basketball lessons while also developing social skills. The experiment confirms the potential of these types of activities, but also reveals the many challenges we have in front of us to stabilize them.

We also organize or participate in other sport events like Tournoi des go 2022 where we contribute with gift and donation of support material and also the Nawewewe sport tournament who promotes the practice of sport for refugees living in Cameroon

THECHALLENGE

It is clear now we are on the path to really focus on sport for development activities and events, we also understand that to be an advocate and game changer in the sport industry in Cameroon, we have to push our activities also outside of Yaounde and Akono city. We are currently in the process of organizing our fundraising strategy and strategic plan for our S4D activities for 2023-2024.

Our wish for next year is to take another giant step towards establishing a safe and healthy sports environment It would only be possible to consult with many grass-roots sports organizations;on how to improve standards requirements for sport events and tournaments and develop stable S4D activities in their organization in Cameroon
