FIGURE GROUND

The studio was presented a task designed to introduce us to explore new techniques, and start thinking conceptually, but with intent. The project was centered around an abstract piece of art painted by Bradley Walker Tomlin called “Number 4”. These reproductions are all focused around manipulating the piece and its attributes to create not a brand new composition, but also not

LIGHT VESSEL

Light is an essential element of architecture, as it can affect the mood, atmosphere, and functionality of a space. Effective lighting design can enhance the aesthetics of a building and affect the space to make it comfortable or inviting. Effective use of light in architecture requires cautious consideration of the light sources, intensity, and direction, as well as the materials and surfaces that it will be shining on. The model was designed to cut and create negative space with the light and create an inviting, ethereal feel. As the light hits the outside of the structure, the light acts as negative space on the base of the structure.

PAVILION

The site, located on the UDM campus between the Library and Architecture buildings, is underutilized and often ignored by students and faculty. This location, adjacent to the quiet peaceful library, inspired me to design a meditation and prayer space for students and faculty to use.

My goal was to create a space where individuals can find solitude, pray, or connect with themselves, the

"Space itself is not obvious, cannot be visually perceived; one sees only objects in space; or the structural members that encloses the space. Space that is, felt; its quality is apprehended by means of the senses, but it s effect is upon its emotions, and cannot readily be rationalized, measured or depicted" -Geoffrey

DJ

For this project, I chose the song "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane and created an abstract interpretation that relates to the song. The project involved creating 2D studies and compositions, followed by a 3D study and a final model. Through the use of various design elements and techniques, I aimed to capture the essence of the music and convey its emotional and conceptual aspects in a visually compelling way.

The end result was an interpetation of the song that captures it's, in my opinion, core elements such as the improvisation how the song

MUSIC STUDIO

For this project, I designed a music studio for John Coltrane that is located in Eastern Market. The studio was specifically designed for recording jazz music and includes an outdoor performance area. The design of the studio incorporated elements that are both structural and aesthetically pleasing on the site. The goal of the project was to create a space that reflects the spirit and legacy of John Coltrane and captures the

DETROIT JAZZ VENUE

This project involved designing a music center inspired by the genre of jazz, located near City Modern in Detroit, at the corner of John R Street and Adelaide Street. To develop the concept, I began with a case study of the Daeyang Gallery and House.

The concept was inspired by the similarities between jazz improvisation and storytelling, and how those concepts can be translated into architecture. The design incorporated various elements of light and space which create tension and resolution through the interplay of positive and negative space and the manipulation of the scale and proportion of the space. The final result is a unique and dynamic experience that celebrates the legacy of jazz music and its impact on American culture.

TOOL BOX

During our Visual Communications course, we worked on enhancing our digital ability in programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Rhino, and InDesign. Our first project introduced us into 3D modeling. We were assigned to pick a tool from the UDM woodshop and create a 3D model of it in Rhino, then work on our linework in Illustrator.

JOINT STUDY

Our second project for Vis Com involved us to utilize our fabrication skills to design a full scale fastening system. My design went through many changes and iterations, but eventually landed on a sort of crank/toy idea

CASE STUDY

We were then instructed to design our case study building that was assigned in studio into a 3D digital model on Rhino. We were then instructed to pick a precedent drawing and render our 3D model in that style of art.
