Dear Readers, We didn?t write this magazine for ourselves. Sure, it was an assignment. Yes, it was for a grade. And of course we labored over it for hours on end, but all the time, effort, sweat and tears were not self-centered. They were for you. We wrote about our favorite things - our interests, our burning passions, our greatest hopes and deepest fears - which only we could understand, so that you, the reader, could better understand them yourself. You may ask: ?W hy??Because you deserve it. If there was anything we?ve learned this year, it?s that words are the most powerful kind of magic. They are the type of magic to sweep you off of your feet - to take you to an unknown land or the mind of another - to nourish our starving minds - and all in one sentence. You may ask: ?How?? Because we have a team of dedicated, hard working, team-driven students. Because we have LucidPress - a slow but steady and handy program. Because we have ISSUU, which gave us a place to publish our work. Because we have our teacher, Ms. Clark, who led us the whole way. And because we have you. That?s right, reader, this magazine was made for you and because of you. And if this introduction doesn?t at least give you goosebumps, then maybe that thought will. Sincerely,

The Aut hors in Room 210

""JUSTTHROWSANDIN THEIREYES"" ANDALL THEOTHERFOOLPROOF ADVICEYOU'LLGETIN MIDDLESCHOOL By Hannah H. and Bella W-S.

The Advice ¨ Be the best... dang broccoli you could ever be.¨ This is jst one example of a piece of advice given by a middle schooler. In middle school, you will get lots of advice from many peo ple. Some of it will be helpful and some will be nonsensical. One of the most important aspects of middle school is learning how to filter this advice. Therefore, we have surveyed 56 middle schoolers from George Bode Middle School to see what some of the craziest advice they have received was. Participants were also asked who was the source of this information and if the advice helped or hurt them. Because some advice that was received did hurt them, we have found the need for some advice of our own. Incidentally, by reading this article, you will know what advice to take, and what to laugh at. Who You?ll Get Advice From In middle school, you will meet some new people, and stay with some old friends. You?ll need to surround yourself with a good group of people who will look out for you. There aren?t a lot of bad people, but if you get caught up with them, it won?t go well for you. The Journal of Early Adolescence conducted a study in February of 2011 at the University of Oregon with over 1,200 middle schoolers. They wanted to know how friendship affects your grades. They

found that people with friends who behaved negatively had worse grades than those with friends who behaved positively. How t o In t er pr et Advice As you go through middle school, you will begin to develop a filter. You will learn to check multiple sources before deciding when an assignment is due, if a teacher is here, or even if we?re dressing out for P.E.. Some other advice you might get could pertain to your personal life. In this case, you really never know what you?re going to get. In the case of your personal life, you might not want to share this information to get multiple perspectives.

Professional opinions on advice giving can range from, ?Our friends usually mean well and when they give us bad advice it's coming out of their own misconceptions,? to the opinion that sometimes, ?[e]verything they suggest makes us doubt our intelligence, abilities and self-worth? (Source).

Conclusion We noticed that the results that we collected from the students from George Bode Middle School support the studies that we have found. You are going to get some crazy advice in middle school and at least half of it will come from your peers. We also found that over half of the advice you get will most likely be bad advice. This just goes to show that you do need to ¨ choose your friends wisely¨ and ¨ make good decisions¨ with the advice that you get. That is our advice to you.

Recr eat i o n al v s. C o m p et i t i v e Sp o r t s By: J.J. F.

I

f you don't know the

difference between recreational and competitive sports are, then you're about to get a nice "edumacation" in it.

Recr eat ion al Spor t s Recreational or REC Sports are sports played for fun rather than competitively and super seriously. Whereas competitive sports are more competitive, hence the name, and more time-consuming. Typically children begin competing in team sports by about 6.8 years of age, for boys, or 7.4 years old, for girls. Recreational sports are typically provided by the local recreation center, or REC center. The cost of the REC sports cost different depending on the sport that you choose. REC sports typically cost less and require much less traveling. These types of sports also have less participants which provides so it requires much less commitment. There are also no tryouts required and are played during the regular season, or when they are

supposed to be played. These types of sports provide easy opportunities to practice the basic fundamentals of the sport and are typically played for fun in a local area. Some examples of REC or competitive sports are baseball, soccer, basketball, softball, or swimming.

Com pet it ive Spor t s Competitive sports, or "Travel Teams" are different however. They require much more time and much more commitment. They require you to try out, and they will test your ability, skills, and talent. These teams are much harder to get into and harder to stay in these. Depending on the sport, some are played year round and are extremely tough and competitive

St at ist ics / Su r veys According to a study done in 2013, by SFIA (Sports and Fitness Industry Association), there are around 21.5 million American kids in team sports by the age of 6-17. That?s more than the population of Florida! From a survey conducted by Don Sabo, 34% of girls say that sports is a big part of who they are, and 61% of boys stated that sports is a big part of their personalities and lives. I then wanted to ask my teammate to find out his opinion on competitive sports.

Th e In t er view JF - " So, are competitive sports worth it?"

TM - " Yes, they are more fun and you get more of a challenge."

JF - " Do you enjoy playing competitive more than REC?"

TM - " Yeah, it is more challenging, and you get to know your team better while having a great relationship with them."

JF - " Has playing competitive affected you? And if so, how?"

TM - "Yes, I've made a lot more friends, and have gotten a lot better at the game."

JF - " On a scale of 1-10 how important is this to you?"

TM - " Probably like a 8, and because it is a lot of fun, it?s enough of a challenge to make me want to do it."

JF - " Would you recommend someone to try out for competitive sports, not thinking about the costs?"

TM - " Yes it gives you a great challenge, and it causes you to persevere."

JF - " Once again, are competitive sports worth it, over REC Sports?"

TM - " Yes, definitely."

Arizona Wildcats- The Wildcats were a dominant team last season as a 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats have s t only one senior as well and a great recruiting class coming through (2nd) according to 247 Sports. They are also projected 2 to be ranked 11th for the upcoming season, ESPN says. Duke- Everyone knows Duke not only as smart but a basketball dynasty. They were a dominating 2 seed in the tournament, with dominating star Jayson Tatum. Grayson Allen has also chose to stay which will help them with their okay recruiting class coming though and ranked 7th for next season (ESPN).

Wh o Will Be Ok ay an d M ak e Th e Tou r n ey?

Kentucky- The John Calipari legacy is still rolling with a dominating season last year with star freshman Malik Monk and De'Arron Fox leading them to a 2 seed and a close game in the elite eight. Isiah Briscoe has also not decided if he is going to stay and if he does he could be a good leader for their team. And they are already ranked 1st in the upcoming season according to ESPN. They will also have some good recruits because they always have some recruits because of Calipari.

Michigan State- Tom Izzo, one of the greatest coaches over, who has led his team to make the tourney pretty much every time. They made the tournament this past season as a 9 seed and easily making it to the second round upsetting Miami. They were led last year by star player Miles bridges and they are ranked 12th for next season says ESPN. Auburn- They were not a very good team last year at all, but that could change from what I think. They have the second best recruiting class according to scouthoops. They aren't in the top 25 for nxt season but that doesn't hold anyone back. I know this is a long shot but i believe they have a very well good chance if their freshman perform as they are projected too. Arkansas- Will still be solid have the number 1 recruiting class coming through according to 247sports. They were a astonishing 8 seed in the tournament putting up a great game against the North Carolina Tar Heels who then won it all. They are not ranked but I feel 100% sure that they will make the tournament. I am warning everyone to be aware of the Razorbacks.

Wh o M ay Com e An d Upset Som e Team s Again ? St Mary's- Made the tournament last year doing pretty well, until they played 2 seed Arizona. They aren?t going to lose a lot of players but a dominant center for them is entering the draft. They are also ranked 15th according to ESPN. Miami- Had a good run last year as taking a solid 8 seed in the tournament but lost the first game against Michigan State, but could probably do good this year as well as they are not losing to many players and ranked 21st according to ESPN. They have a great coach and seem to always make the tournament and everyone knows during tournament time anything can happen. Wichita State- Will have Conner Frankamp and Landry Shamet to lead them to upset some teams for next season. They are also ranked 8th for the start of next season according to ESPN. This team always knows how to contend and they have a smart coach as well. They put up a solid game last year in the tournament facing 2 seed Kentucky as well.

Wh o M ay Be a Sleeper ? Mizzou- Great recruiting class that I think could be deadly, they got new coaches and the number 1 recruit as they also have another top 25 recruit coming 247sports, through and could get another and they will be coming out on fire because they have a good chance this year. They are not ranked for next season but they haven?t had a chance to be good in a long time so they will definitely be ready. Iowa- Young solid team that if they play together can make the tourney, they almost made the tourney last year as 3 of their five starters were Freshmen and I think they could also be solid next year, with the 9th best recruiting class coming through according to 247sports. This team only has Peter Jok leaving which will definitely hurt them but they have a 4 star recruit coming through so don?t doubt them. Texas- Also has a great recruiting class coming through, 3 recruits in the top 100 according to Hook?Em.com who I also think could be deadly and they could do pretty good as a young team and they have a good coach. Texas is usually pretty good with a great student atmosphere boosting their adrenaline. This team may not be that good but I thought ya know they have a chance so why not see if they can do something with it.

Pro gaming is a uprising new sport that is starting to become a big thing with e- sports . The whole world participates in this event. Most of the people that participate spend almost their whole day gaming and making advancements. The whole variety of gaming in these events on games like Call of Duty and Overwatch rely on teamwork to win it. You win or go home. There's nothing else to it There are games like Super Smash Mobs that you have one on ones, and that is just who's the better player or who counters the other player. E- sports is the most thing viewed on Twitch and streaming sites when they come live. These events don't last just one day, they last days and hours with 16 teams competing on a ladder system. You don't get paid for winning this event, but if you win the whole event, you get a lot of money. The basis of these types of events are for people with special talents to be able to make it in the world vs. not being able to do anything with it and not having a special skill

I surveyed several students at Bode. People like Xbox One more in Bode Middle School. They like it more than PS4 because the size of the controller is more convenient for hand size. People like both, but the system they start with is always easier to use, due to being used to it. Here are some comments they left: Xbox On e "It is better quality overall." "because I like Xbox" "PS4 is not as good. Play stations always freezes up and you end up losing your progress of the game" PS4 "It has better graphics, it runs faster and I can play call of duty map packs 1 month early" "because I like Playstations"

ISTECHCHANGINGEDUCATION?

WRITTENBY: ZACHW.

Yes or No? Technology is changing everything! Things are different than how they used to be, and they are continuing to change. In some schools, instead of your usual pen and paper, they are supplying students with laptops to do their work on. There has been a lot of debate over whether the old-school or the new-school educations strategies are better. Some kids would say that it's easier having a laptop for organizational purposes, or even to take notes on. Some kids disagree and say that having a computer can make school work complicated and hard. Many schools have started switching to the new technology and i wanted to figure out what kids liked the most.

Wh at do t h e st u den t s pr ef er ? So I asked them. I sent out a survey form (with my Laptop) to the kids of Bode Middle School, asking if they prefer doing school work on a laptop, paper, or both. These are my results.

Kr ebs, Den ise. " 2012-003 Classr oom Resear ch ." Flick r . Yah oo!, 03 Jan . 2012. Web. 25 Apr . 2017.

Bu t Wait , Th er e's M or e! Still curious, I asked the kids what activities they prefer to do on a laptop, and what activities they prefer to do on paper. Activities students said that were better to do on a laptop include writing, taking notes, and researching. Although these are some basic components of school, most students like to take tests and do daily homework on paper.

Ben ef it ? or n ot ? Using technology in the classroom, in K-12 and in higher education, has been a controversial debate for the last couple of decades. Parents, teachers, and students have argued the potential benefits versus the risks and consequences of classroom technology, not only referring directly to the devices many students own, but referring to the use of tools in everyday education. Here are some good/bad things that might come from using technology in the classroom.

M olin a, Alejan dr a. " He Got a ?Lor d of t h e Flies?Cam pu s, bu t Pr in cipal Tu r n ed San t a An a?s Spu r geon In t er m ediat e ar ou n d." Orange County Register. Or an ge Cou n t y Regist er , n .d. Web. 01 M ay 2017.

PROS -Students can look things up during discussion, and share what they?ve found with the class -Students?readings, notes, and assignments are more accessible (and the school doesn?t have to print everything out don?t have to print everything out) -Some students can take notes more effectively on their laptops -Laptops can allow for different and sometimes more effective in-class learning activities, especially for small group work -Laptops can let allow students to engage differently in the material, which might help them learn better

CONS -Some students will probably go to websites that can distract them from their learning (gaming sites) -In a discussion it can be off-putting to have several students around a table with their laptops open because their full attention won?t be on the speaker -?I?ve found that sometimes a lot depends on whether there?s a critical mass of students using their laptops ? in which case it detracts from the atmosphere in the classroom, and it feels like there?s a bunch of individuals on their computers sitting in a room rather than a group of invested students in a room.? says Kim Mann, who is the editor and a writer for the Academic Technology Blog.

Music for You Cami, Melia, Skylee Music is very popular today, and keeps changing with time. Which songs are the most popular; what genres are the most popular? We hear songs on the radio all the time, but when you read this you?ll be surprised to find out that Bode agrees with the rest of the US. These are Bode?s favorite genres and songs.

What The U.S. Pr efer s

What most people prefer in the United States is rap or mostly today?s hits. The reason why people prefer today?s hits is because when you're listen to the radio or your play list it can change people?s mood to happy or sad. Some people listen to rap or today?s hits is to have fun with friends almost every public place you go to that is listening to music you?re more likely to hear this kind of music. On the radio there?s a lot of music sometimes you hear a song made from the 2000?s you or your family, friend still can jam out to.

2016 FRESHMAN RAPPERS

1. XXXTentacion, the 19 year old from Launder hill Florida has been blowing up in the past couple of months. This is mainly because of his two songs ?LOOK AT ME"? and ?#sippinteainyourhood".

3. Famous Dex, a young upcoming rapper from Manhattan, New York, has a very ?energetic vibe". One of his most popular songs is ?Took Time"?from the album ?Dexter The Robot".

2. Lil Pump, a 16 year old from Miami Florida has also been blowing up lately,. His favorite songs include ?D Rose"? and ?Flex Like Ouu".

4. Ugly God, a 20 year old rapper straight out of Indiana, has recently released the banger known as ?W ater".

5. Kyle, also known as Superduperkyle, is a 23 year old, and probably best known for the song ?"I spy".?He also has other nice songs like ?Doubt It". He could be grouped as a singer, as well.

6. Ski Mask The Slump God, usually associated with XXXTentacion, is a 20 year old rapper who has released bangers featuring XXXTentacion, such as ?Take a Step Back".

7. Rich The Kid is a 24 year old who could?ve probably been on last years cypher. He isn't really a ?Freshman"? anymore, but could bring more attention to XXL.

8. Amine, 23, would probably add a hook into freestyle. He blew up a major song ?Caroline"?about a good looking girl with a terrible attitude.

9. Playboi Carti, 20 years old, released his debut mix tape on April 14, 2017. He is also in the ASAP mob along with ASAP rocky.

St r in gs Article written by: Emily M. Band or strings? This is an ongoing argument in Bode Middle School that nobody seems to have the answer to. Everyone has a different opinion, and nobody is planning on siding with other 's opinions. So I'm here to ask you one thing. Band or strings?

Ban d

(In band) Tyson C.- "because we sound more organized and we're cooler " (In band) Shyla C.- "band has more of a variety. Strings looks like the same instrument but different sizes. Edan S.- "as far as band goes, there are more variations, like in strings you can only pluck of bow." Josie C.-"I like that lots of people who are working on different things can blend together into one song; it's beautiful."

Band, in schools, is an amazing opportunity to express yourselves and fight to the death with the strings kids (I'm just kidding, please don't kill us). You Tristan P.- "I think the reason I chose band is because it has more of a variety have a large variety of instruments to while strings is just plucking the strings. choose from and all the instruments have different 'personalities'. WHYBAND? Why is band so great? Is it the people? Is it the teacher s? Or is maybe you come for the health benefits. No matter what your cause is for being in band, or any music progr am for that matter, the exper ience is once in a lifetime. We thought we should take the time to acknowledge all of the hard work that our music teacher s and students put into their cr aft ever y day.

Not only is band amazing, playing an instr ument also has lots of health benefits, and is even considered to help treat alzheimer 's. A study was done at the Univer sity of Kansas Medical Center that states ?musicians per for med better at cognitive tests than non musicians.? Band has been not only an educational exper ience but can help with regulating mood, enhance your coordination, and improve your respir ator y system. Then again, none of the kids in band really care about all that Jazz, we just come to do what we love, play Jazz (I?m too good).

Aside from the hor r ible puns, it really is like that. We come into band as a place to do something fun, be a par t of a group effor t, and make something beautiful. It is nice having a class where the fun outweighs gr ades, where there is no conscious effor t to be better, it just happens along the way. Yes for many, it is fun to get better, speaking from exper ience. Aside from Chad Lippincott and all those director s, I?d say that the best par t of band is the idea that it is more fun than it is a class you take in school and it stands out. For that, it is by far the best elective at Bode Middle School.

BANDTEACHERS Our band progr am recently received the 2017 Best Communities for Music Education award. That means that we were nationally recognized as one of the best places to lear n music. Our teacher s are what really make band great though. We went around inter viewing kids from all different sections as to why Mr. Lippincott, the seventh gr ade br ass teacher and the eighth gr ade band teacher, is so great. ?He really encour ages kids to do well.? said Isaac R., an eighth gr ade percussionist. Ever yone has str uggled in band, but Mr. Lippincott really pulls us through and makes us believe that we can do it. This last Spr ing Concer t there were a lot of difficult solos that we couldn?t quite get down, but he didn?t let us give up and encour aged us to keep tr ying until we eventually got it. Mr. Lippincott inspires students ever yday to continue being musicians, and does so by making band a great exper ience. Parker H., a clar inet in the eighth gr ade band, told us, ?Without him pushing us to get better ever yday, a lot of us would've given up or been okay with being ter r ible. He always tells us that we can be better, and pushes us to stretch our limits and progress.? Although we haven?t known him long, Mr. Fischer has had a huge impact on us. He is the band director, which means he over sees all of the band activities. He doesn?t teach at Bode, but he still takes the time to come in ever y once in awhile to see how we?re progressing and give us tips. Mr. Fischer is always excited to see us and watch us progress, and you can tell even when you fir st meet him that he is really passionate about teaching music. He cares so genuinely about music and the kids, so it?s hard not to love him.

Side note: There wasn?t a HUGE meaningful explanation about why I picked these songs to review. It was mostly a means of a. these are kind of personal favorite songs for me, and b. They were the first meaningful songs I thought of.

We?ve all got a favorite song or two, but in some cases, the lyrics might not be crystal clear on their meaning. So, it?s time to take a look at some song lyrics that may be a little confusing and make them crystal clear.

Info on The song and Band: Forest is a song from the Twenty One Pilots album Regional at Best. It's not available on anywhere but Youtube, but it's still a good song.

Twenty One Pilots is a band that doesn't fit into any genre. One of the main topics tackled [Small note, any time I say you, it?s just referring to a general person.] in their songs are mental illness and serious issues, rather than popular peppy sounding tunes that would make money. The two members of Twenty One Pilots are Josh Dun, the drummer, and Tyler Joseph, the singer and songwriter. There's a fairly large following behind the band [nicknamed "The Clique"], and most of the Clique can relate to the issues brought up in the band's song. Some of the band's most popular songs are Stressed Out, I don't k n ow w h y I f eed on em ot ion Ride, Tear in My Heart, and Car Radio.

Th er e's a st om ach in side m y br ain [The narrator?s a little confused as to why he relies so much on emotion. It?s not a positive thing to him.] I don't w an n a be h ear d I w an t t o be list en ed t o [Being heard isn?t always a good thing. If you?re heard but not listened to, saying anything feels kind of pointless. If no one takes to heart or reacts to anything you said, it?s not even worth saying anything.] Does it bot h er an yon e else Th at som eon e else h as you r n am e? Does it bot h er an yon e else Th at som eon e else h as you r n am e, you r n am e? [A bit of existentialism here. It?s a big thought., that someone else has your name, and that there are people who are very similar to you. Are you just a clone of someone? Are you anyone in this world? That?s the question the narrator?s really asking, not if it freaks you out that you?re not the only one with the name you have.]

I scr eam , you scr eam , w e all scr eam [That?s an old reference to the old saying ?I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!?But this isn?t used cheerily.] 'Cau se w e'r e t er r if ied of w h at 's ar ou n d t h e cor n er [The basic human fear. The fear of the unknown. Nobody wants to jump head first into something in which they have no idea what will happen. This especially applies to fans of Twenty One Pilots, because Tyler writes songs not to make it big, but to be relatable, and a lot of people who listen to TĂ˜P deal with a lot of fear. Not everyone, but quite a few.] We st ay in place 'Cau se w e don't w an t t o lose ou r lives [Once again, another human fear. The fear of death. While not all people have it {I know I don?t fully}, most do. People will do what they know is safe because it won?t result in anything bad. We stick to what we know. It?s easier to stay in our own little personal bubble.] So let 's t h in k of som et h in g bet t er . [The narrator is throwing the idea of not focusing on all of the terrible things out. Let?s not focus on the things that we don?t know about, let?s not focus on death, but let?s focus on something that we can find ?better?. It may be a belief, something we enjoy, or just some of the good things in life. Whatever it is, focus on that instead.]

The forest is a place of sanctuary, where no one has to worry about the terrifying mess that is reality. The forest is peace. As for the chorus that everyone knows but nobody wrote, that?s probably just the idea of a common belief that?s been around forever that most people can agree on, like we should all be the best we can be.] M y br ain h as given u p Wh it e f lags ar e h oist ed [And back to reality. The narrator has hit a low point in mental stability. All this stress is getting to him. So, the ?easy?option comes out. Give up. While this may sound like a terrible thing to do, it?s not easy to always stay standing under intense fire from your own brain. Sometimes, giving up is a bit of a necessary part of dealing with these sorts of problems. Wait for the storm to pass before attempting again.]

EVERYTHING,EVERYTHINGISEVERYTHING YOU'VEBEENWANTINGINAYANOVEL Wh at it ?s abou t : Everything, Everything is about a girl named Madeline who suffers from SCID, which basically means that she is allergic to anything and everything. To avoid dying, Madeline is forced to stay indoors and she doesn?t get to explore everything that the world has to offer, with only her nurse Carla and her mother as companions. That all changes when Olly moves in next door. Wh y you sh ou ld (n eed) t o r ead it : Everything, Everything truly does have EVERYTHING. It combines humor, romance, and a little action and adventure. INTERVIEWWITH KATHERINEC. FELLOW8THGRADER Wou ld you r ecom m en d Ever yt h in g, Ever yt h in g t o ot h er s? I would definitely recommend it to others. Wh at do you lik e abou t Ever yt h in g, Ever yt h in g? It was beautifully written and changed my outlook on life. Yoon's writing really carries you along the story, and there are never any boring moments. It changed me as a person, which is the token evidence of a good book. The twists and turns that happen towards the end of the book totally flip the story, and make a regular love book one of great suspense and mystery. Will you be seein g t h e m ovie w h en it com es ou t ?

Th e im ages t o t h e lef t an d u p ar e book cover s f or Ever yt h in g, Ever yt h in g. Th e im age dow n lef t is t h e au t h or , Nicola Yoon .

Abou t t h e au t h or : Nicola Yoon is the #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of her novels Everything, Everything, and The Sun is Also A Star. She was born in Jamaica and she currently lives in Los Angeles, California with her family.

I will be seeing the movie when it comes out, even though it looks very different. I'm not one of those people who hate book movies because they change things. I understand that movies are different from books in not only how they are shown, but how they have to be written. I hope it is a good movie, and entices more people to read this book. Do you lik e ot h er Nicola Yoon book s? I'm currently reading The Sun is Also a Star. I just started it, but Yoon's familiar style of writing carries through to this book. So far it is really good, but I can't make a final decision until I finish it.

W hy Arrival Should've Won Best Picture by Elise M. Arrival was one of the best movies I?ve seen in a long time. Probably the best since Inception. It?s the type of movie that you really have to think about to fully appreciate, and, honestly, I think that?s why not a lot of people tend to like films with those qualities. But that?s not the only reason that Arrival should?ve won. Th e Gen r e Sci-fi is hugely under -represented in the Oscars. There has never been a sci-fi movie that has won best picture. The main awards that sci-fi earn are for special effects, and Arrival didn?t even win that, The Jungle Book did. Although Arrival did win sound editing, it didn?t do the movie justice. Arrival gave the Oscars a chance to show that they aren?t genre biased and they threw it away, like every other sci-fi movie. Th e Th em e The overall movie has a very motivational message. Knowing the destination doesn?t change how rewarding the journey can be. Even though Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams knows what?s going to happen in the future, she goes ahead and goes through with it, like giving birth to a child that she knows will die. She seems to appreciate what is going on more because she already knows what will happen.

Th e St or y This isn?t your average, spacey, futuristic, sci-fi. Unlike most movies in that genre, this movie plays to your emotions. The very first scene has Louise Banks with her newborn daughter. As the movie continues, her daughter gets older, but at the end of each scene Louise seems troubled by something, almost like she knew her daughter ?s life would be ending soon. It continues weaving these emotion filled moments throughout the movie. And finally when Louise understands the Heptapod?s language, her view of time is utterly changed. This is the moment when you realize the movie is in Louise?s view of time, and that she understands that there is no beginning or end of time, only what you are perceiving currently. Time is infinite. Th e Review s Arrival managed to get a whopping 94% on rotten tomatoes, while the runner up to best picture, La La Land, got 93%. Christopher Orr for The Atlantic called Arrival ? .. the kind of science fiction movie, at once epic and intimate, that Interstellar tried (and failed) to be.? Even if it didn?t win Best Picture, Arrival will be remembered as one of the greats of sci-fi movies. It?s ratings just fall behind classics like ET, Blade Runner and 2001: A Space Odyssey. I can?t say that Moonlight didn?t deserve to win, but I strongly think that it was a better contender for Best Picture.

F NDOM S: Th e boom in g su bcu lt u r e of people all obsessed w it h t h e sam e t h in gs. By: Naomi Q and Amanda N Unless you use an ungodly amount of your free time browsing Tumblr and Pinterest, you probably have no idea what we?re talking about. If you do know what we?re talking about, try not to fangirl too much (if you were the former group, you will find out soon what fangirling means). If you would like to become savvy in the way of this world wide phenomena, continue reading.

Wh at is a Fan dom ?: Everybody likes something. It can be a book, a TV show, or even a person. Most people are just casual enjoyers of said thing but a select few take it farther. This is when you get a fandom. Basically a fandom is a collection of people who all share a common enjoyment of something. The term 'fandom' can be described by some as ?kingdom of fans?, while people have also said that fandom is an abbreviation of ?fanatic domain?. Both of these are valid descriptions. There are many different fandoms each of which circles around something different. Some fandoms include: the Potterheads (Harry Potter), the Clique (Twenty One Pilots), and the many miscellaneous book fandoms. As you can see, many fandoms, especially the bigger ones, have specific names. For example, the Supernatural fandom is called ?the Hunters?rather than just ?the Supernatural fandom?.

Wh er e ar e Fan dom s Locat ed?: You may be asking yourself where these communities reside, to this there are several answers. Usually members of fandoms use social platforms such as Tumblr, Pinterest, Youtube, etc to share fanart, fanfics, or to just discuss their fandoms with like minded people. You most likely have also heard of Comic Con, which is pretty much a massive fandom meeting. Image from Wikimedia Commons

Ter m s: Du e t o t h e vast n u m ber of f an dom s an d people in f an dom s, m an y t er m s h ave ar isen t o descr ibe dif f er en t t h in gs. Th ese t er m s cou ld be a n am e f or a ch ar act er pair in g or t h e accept an ce of a f an t h eor y. Her e ar e a f ew of t h e biggest on es t o k n ow :

Ship/Ship-name:

No, not this type of ship. Image from https://pixabay.com/en/photos/ship/

The use of the term ship is not necessarily exclusive to fandoms. A ship is a pairing, usually romantic, of two characters. There are many different types of ships some of which can even involve characters from two different fandoms. There are no rules for shipping as it is is simply a way of expressing two characters that would go well together or can even be used as a joke. One example of a joke ship would be Drapple, the shipping of Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter and an apple.

A ship name is usually a combination of the names of the two characters, however this is not always the case. OTP: OTP stands for ?one true pairing?. It is pretty much the mother of all ships. While most people have many casual ships, their OTP is the couple that they want to end up together above all else. Many people are very passionate about their OTP, much more so than any other ships. While OTP stands for one true pairing, most people have more than one. Feels: Feels usually refer to the emotions brought on by something that happens in the book/TV show etc. that the fandom circles. This could be when something makes you happy but is usually when there is something very sad or painful.

Fanart and Fanfiction: These both refer to fan made material. However, they are very different things. There are a vast range of things that qualify as fanart. These could be images of the characters doing everyday activities or of things that have happened within the series. There is also plenty of shipping fanart but we?re not going to delve into that. In addition, there is a vast range of qualities of fanart. While some fanart is extremely beautiful and detailed, other fanart can be a simple doodle. So long as it is fan created art that pertains to the series, it qualifies as fanart.

This is an example of some mediocre fanart that I (Naomi) actually drew. It is the main character from Markus Zusack's The Book Thief.

Fanfiction is a bit different. This is basically when a fan borrows the characters and/or the setting of a series and does what they want with them. Fanfiction is commonly used with ships. Enough said. Canon/Headcanon: A headcanon is oftentimes a fan theory within the realm of possibility. Headcanons differ from fanfiction in the sense that the could have or could eventually happen within the series. Canon is when a headcanon is accepted by the creator of the series. Most times when using the term canon, people are referring to ships. Fangirling: Be aware that fangirling does not only apply to girls. It just a general term as fanboys are considered an endangered species by many. Fangirling refers to when a fan pretty much spazzes out in reaction to something relating to a fandom that they are in.

Th e Five Lar gest Fan dom s: So now you know all about fandoms, here are the top five:

5. Books: There are thousands of miscellaneous book fandoms of varied size and followings. Some are so small that they may seem obsolete, but they are there. Be careful, they bite. Examples include: Percy Jackson, Hunger Games, The Lord of the Rings, The Lunar Chronicles, Legend, Lorien Legacies,The Mortal Instruments etc. 4. SuperWhoLock: SuperWhoLock is actually the combination of three of the larger TV fandoms, Hunters, Whovians, and Sherlockians, creating the unholy combination of mass destruction. Though SuperWhoLock is not Canon, there are many AUs (alternate universes) to make up for it. (The three tv shows in question are as follows: Sherlock, Supernatural, and Doctor Who.) 3. Disney: You?re lying to yourself if you say you?re not a member of this fandom. If you grew up with the classics: Nemo, Snow White, Aladdin, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast etc, you have experienced the Disney magic. 2. Marvel: This fandom was originally based in comics but grew into one of books, movies, and TV shows. These are the fans who know to stay for the end credit scene and to look for the next infinity stone. Their most recent and iconic material has been the Avengers movies (I?m excited for Infinity War) and The Guardians of the Galaxy (I can?t wait for Volume 2). Image from Wikimedia Commons

And last but never in a million years least: 1. HARRY POTTER! * Hedwig?s theme plays in the distance* You knew this was coming. There is no way that you haven?t heard of one of the best selling series of all time with the largest following of all the fandoms, the Potterheads. This fandom is based around its 7 book series (not including the Hogwarts Library set) and 8 films (not including Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them). The books have been translated into 68 languages and have sold over 400 million copies worldwide.

Th e Ru ssian's Jew el By Nayah V. The Amur Leopar d The situation of the Amur leopard has become a critical issue, due to habitat loss and conflicts with man. Amur leopards are now only found in the border areas between Russia and Northeast China. Their space to roam is very limited, even smaller than some very unpopulated living places like Dorset. Russia is known for their cold climates, and The Amur leopards have adapted to them by growing a hide of thick fur. Amazingly, the fur can grow up to 7.5cm in the winter. Their rosettes, the pattern on their coat, are widely spaced separating them from other species of leopard or big cats. Also, Their tongues are layered with barbs or hooks, called denticles, used to rip the meat of their prey's bones.

Poaching For this sparse beauty, poaching has become a serious issue. According to WWF experts estimate there are only 40 to 35 of them freely roaming the wild. Only about 7-12 still roam the Chinese border. Due To poaching, illegal trade, and the lack of reproducing at a fast paced these low numbers could easily die out. This leopard is poached largely for it beautiful spotted fur. These rare pallets are sold for 500 to 1000 dollars, but can be sold for much more out of local establishments.

W hat'sCooking? Who says good food can't be healthy? Ar t icle by Car son H Whether in the morning, midday, or at night, food is always something we need to survive. But what if food could become something more than just an energy source -- what if food could become not a way to survive, but a way to live? Plus, why is so much food in our lives unhealthy? My goal today is to provide you with several recipes -- all of which are under 500 calories -- that are equally delicious in their own way.

4 Tablespoons unsalted butter, browned 5 cups miniature marshmallows 4 cups Kellogg's Rice Krispies cereal 2 cups Post Fruity Pebbles cereal 2/3 cup white chocolate chips, Hershey's 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil Prepare a 13 by 9 baking dish by spraying it with non-stick cooking spray or baking spray. Next, add butter to a saucepan and heat at medium. Don't let it burn. Continually stir with a wooden spoon and remove from heat when butter particles start to brown, which takes about 5-8 minutes. Add marshmallows to the brown butter and constantly stir until melted all the way. In a large mixing bowl, mix up the rice krispies cereal with 2/3 of the marshmallow mixture and pour into the baking dish. Flatten using wax paper or a spatula sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Then, reheat the marshmallows (only if necessary) and mix it up with the fruity pebbles. Add the fruity pebbles to the top of the rice krispies and flatten the same way. Melt white chocolate in the microwave in 15 second increments. When mostly melted, add oil and mix well. Transfer white chocolate to a decorator bag and snip the end, drizzle over krispy treats and serve.

FRANCE PRIOR TO THE GREAT WAR 1 The French Revolution, in fact, fundamentally altered

the success and longevity in nearly every aspect of European life. French armies now far exceeded their counterparts in the Holy Roman Empire, and by 1797 they had defeated the First Coalition. By the Napoleonic Era, France had reached the peak of their militaristic power. As opposed to their influence in the Great War of 1914, France was one of the superpowers of the then ?modern world?. 2 France, at least in America, is most famously known for providing French aide, including guns, ships, and troops during the American Revolution of 1775.

HISTORYOFTHEU.S.S.R BY: ISAACR. Wh at w as t h e Soviet Un ion ? The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), or Soviet Union for short, was a nation of the world that came abroad in 1922. The Soviet Union adopted Communism, a form of government that came on the rise in 1917. The Soviet Union would strive through the years, only before falling in 1991, being ?re-done? to present day Russia. The soviets would achieve many notable acts in their time, such as being a prominent member of the Allied Powers in World War 2, being a proud ally of East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Poland, as well as spreading Communism through most of the Eastern World.

Wh at is Com m u n ism ? Communism, in simplest terms, is a form of government conceived by the ideals of Karl Marx. Communism promotes the idea that all production factories (Mines, factories, farms, etc.) are publicly owned by the state. The wealth of these production factories was to be divided among the people evenly, according to personal need. The ideals were to eliminate people from capitalizing off of other people?s work, such as a private investor taking a part of a coal production plant to gain profit. Communism eliminates this from happening and forces people to work for their own need. Communism was the exact opposite of Capitalism, the form of government that proposes the ideal that you should be able to capitalize off of other people?s labor. Communism also wished to eliminate social classes, which is quite ironic, as it didn?t do so at all in the Soviet Union?s case. The quote ?All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others,? is a quote from the book Animal Farm, often used to portray Communism, in a way. Animal Farm is, after all, an allegory to the Soviet Union.

Fou n din g of t h e Soviet Un ion The Soviet Union was officially founded in October of 1922. I could end this section here, but there?s a lot more to the founding of the Soviet Union than just that. The roots of the Soviet Union can be traced back to the October Revolution of 1917. The revolution overthrew the Tsarist government of Russia and replaced it with a Provisional government. This is directly responsible for the Russian Civil War, which lasted from the October Revolution to the founding of the Soviet Union (1917 1922). The Russian Civil War was a conflict fought by multiple forces of the Russian Empire. Many factions tried hard to enforce their political future for the country. The two most prominent factions in the Civil War were the Red Army, fighting for the Bolshevik form of socialism led by Vladimir Lenin, and the mostly allied force of the White Army, which included diverse beliefs in monarchism, capitalism, and alternative forms of socialism, each with democratic and antidemocratic variants. Another famous army that fought in the civil war was the Green Army, which fought against both Bolshevik and the Whites. The Russian Civil War ended with the victory of the Red Army in 1922, and thus resulted directly in the founding of the Soviet Union, which soon came to be under the leadership of Joseph Stalin.

casualties (Germans, Romanians, Italians, and Hungarians) are believed to have been more than 800,000 dead, wounded, missing, or captured. The Battle of Stalingrad was fought from August of 1942 to February of 1943. The battle did, however, result in an Allied victory from the Soviets. The Red Army had proved successful again.

Th e Fall of A Nat ion The tale of the Soviet Union is a sad one. You?d think that with all of the success the young nation provided that the Soviet Union would cease to fall and would, in fact, continue on as one of the world?s major powers. This, however, just wasn?t the case. The roots of the failing nation can be traced back to 1990, when the Soviet Union was falling behind the massive arms race that was the Cold War. The nation struggled to keep its people in check. The rising political tension seemed to stack on as well. The tension was relieved, and the people got their wish on December 25, 1991, when the Soviet Union was officially disbanded into independent republics across the nation, being revoked to what the nation had always been centuries before: Russia. The Soviet Union is a bit of a darker side of history, as even though they seemed to be just another nation of the world, a lot of their people suffered throughout the years of the U.S.S.R. Without further ado, that was a brief summary of the rise and fall of the Soviet Union.

T A St r ivin g Nat ion The Soviet Union asserted its dominance in World War 2, where the Soviets proved to be a very large part of the Allied Powers and one of the direct reasons for the retreat of the Nazis to Berlin. In World War 2, Adolf Hitler had originally planned to defeat the Soviet Union with a quick conquer of the town of Stalingrad. If the name Stalingrad sounds familiar, it?s probably because the Battle of Stalingrad was one of the deadliest battles in World War 2, having more casualties than The Invasion of Normandy on Omaha Beach. Over 425,000 Allied and German troops were killed, wounded, or went missing during the Battle of Normandy, while the Soviets recovered 250,000 German and Romanian corpses in and around Stalingrad, and total Axis

THE BANNER

You pledge allegiance to the Flag. More specifically, you pledgeallegiancetotheflagof theUnitedStatesof America andtotherepublicfor whichit stands, onenation, under god, indivisiblewithliberty andjusticefor all. ...That?s great and all, but what does it mean?

Every day, as if we were robots programmed to do so, we say the same quote to the same flag and yet we give little thought to what they both represent, much less their unique back stories and creators.

The flag is the easier one to comprehend. It is a ?symbol of freedom and liberty.?Each of the 50 stars represent a separate state, and the stripes represent the 13 colonies, which are also states. The red stands for ?valor and bravery?the white for ?purity and innocence?and the blue for ?vigilance, perseverance and justice? The whole flag really shrieks "CHEESEBURGER!"

THE PLEDGE The pledge of allegiance is more complicated. He's the big emo bro - the one nobody truly understands. Christian-socialist minister Francis Bellamy birthed this in 1892 in TheYouth's Companion:

by Tristan P.

T

His goal was for his pledge to be "used by citizens in any country". He did not reach his goal. L Instead of people from all over the world, he reached school children all across the United i States. 1923 comes around the corner and we Americans did what we do best. We made it ours.s The pledge was edited to fit our country.

We made one last edit in 1954. We put god in it. ?Why add god??you ask. "Because Communists," Then-President Eisenhower answers. After all, God is the tried and true anti communist symbol. Bellamy?s daughter did not approve of this addition but we went ahead and did it anyway.

THE STARS(or lack thereof)

Like the pledge, our flag went through many iterations. Each new state added to the union increased the star count by one. Obviously I cannot show you all of them, so I have pulled .some of the more interesting iterations. They are displayed below. Created in May of 1776 by Betsy Ross, this was the first American flag that had stars and stripes (the ones prior had one of those traits or neither)

This flag is known as the ?Indian Peace Flag?. It was created in 1803, just 33 years before the Cherokee trail of tears. Sorry about that.

This flag, appropriately named the "Great Star Flag" has a star made of stars. Next thing you know, we?ll have a flag made out of flags...

...Speaking of such a flag, in 1776 this flag was created as a sort of mash of the Union Jack and the standard American flag. No wonder we almost lost the revolutionary war. There's no creativity here.

THE PONY EXPRESS

WRITTEN BY: A.B. & P.H.

Google For m: Of all the students we surveyed at Bode, only about 5% of them actually knew what the Pony Express was. That's sad. We did a survey, and after reading the responses, we decided that Bode needed a fixer-upper on their knowledge of the Pony Express. Here are some of the wackiest or most correct responses. (anonymous responses) "Delivering mail on a horse around the world.' "A route that people riding horses would go to deliver mail to others" "a discovery" "pizza" "Who knows" "The pony express is where this mailman rode a horse everywhere for the mail and would ride city - city" "A mail delivery service back in 'ye olden days'" "My little pony"

What Was t he Pony Expr ess? The Pony Express was a mail delivering system that began in the spring of 1860. Being able to deliver a letter from the starting base in St. Joseph, MO to the ending base in Sacramento, CA in less than 7 days made it the fastest way to deliver a letter at that time. Although it ended up going out of business due to the building of railroads and telegraph lines, and was an all in all a financial flop, the Pony Express is a very important part of St. Joe history. To help you better understand, here are 5 interesting facts about the Pony Express -

1. According to record, they only ever lost one bag of mail (Andrews) 2. There were about 80 riders, and over 400 other employees (Pony Express Riders) 3. Along the trail, there were about 100 different stable stations (Pony Express Riders, 1861) 4. To have been a rider, you would have had to have been a 14 - 18 boy who weighed around 100 - 125 lbs (Pony Express Riders) 5. The pay was around $100 monthly-- that is $2, 700 in today?s money! (Pony Express Riders)

Citations

The Life of a Rider While riders had decent pay and reputation, the job wasn?t always glamorous. Many riders died from disease. Others may have been killed in raids or attacks. Not to mention that riding around on a horse all day-not too good for your body. So, you may wonder, What sort of things did these riders endure? Well, that?s what we will be answering for you! Diseases and health problems were a huge problem with riders on the Pony Express. Even though riders changed horses every 15 miles, they only changed people every 75 to 100 (Pony Express Riders Faced Many Dangers). These boys were riding for all this time in what many historians compare to a ?relay race? (Andrews); they were riding at fast paces over rough terrain. Because they rode so often, many of them developed scoliosis, genital issues, neck problems, and many other complications concerning the spinal cord (Real). On top of the excessive riding, they had to ride through all sorts of weather conditions. Due to too hot or too cold weather, the boys contracted sickness such as tuberculosis, influenza, and heat stroke. Another huge difficulty was that things like dust storms caused lung and breathing problems to arise in the riders (Real). Not only did the boys have to work their way through disease, there were also many dangers along the way to the stations. They were constantly being threatened by herds of buffalo (Real). I don?t know about you, but I wouldn?t want to get trampled by a huge buffalo, let alone hundreds! Robbers were constantly after their mail in hopes that someone might have been mailing jewels or money. People often robbed the stations, making the job of station manager almost more dangerous than rider (Pony Express Rider, 1861). But the trouble doesn?t stop at crazed buffalo or maniac thieves with guns. That would be too easy. They also had to deal with Native American attacks, and rough terrain that was often very dangerous to navigate. William ?Buffalo Bill? Cody even talks of a time when ?a party of fifteen Indians jumped me? ? If you would like to learn more about the Pony Express, you can visit the Pony Express National Museum at 914 Penn Street; St. Joseph, MO; 64503. You can also contact or find out more through phone: (816) 279 5059, or their website, ponyexpress.org.

The Cr eat or s William H. Russell, Alexander Majors, and William B. Waddell. Do these names mean anything to you? The answer is probably no, (unless you are a huge history buff!) These three men are the creators of The Pony Express! After California becomes a state in 1850, citizens, miners, and businessmen/women alike are all anxious to get faster communication from the East to the West of the US. William Russell and William Waddell form the company ?Waddell and Russell.? (bio) to deliver military supplies from the government to the western states. After Ben Ficklin (employee of the firm) travels with the owners, he has the bright idea to make a mail service with horses, and relays. (1854) a bill is drafted to congress for the government to provide the mail service. But, the bill never gets out of committee. (Pony Express website) On Jan. 1st 1855 Alexander Majors joins the company and it is renamed ?Russell, Majors and Waddell.? (bio.com) This small business would soon monopolize western freighting and start a mail-passenger service to both Colorado and Utah by stagecoach. However, The Mormon War in 1857 would almost bankrupt the firm due to losses from stolen or destroyed equipment and supplies. (Pony Express website) 1860, The firm sets out to establish the Pony Express mail service under the name of the Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company. They had chosen Saint Joseph as the Eastern terminal for the mail, as it was perfect. (since it was connected to the east by railroads and the telegraph.)

According to psychologistworld.com, hate can be formed from many different ways. It can be created from guilt or pride. Criticism, jealousy, and idealism are also common causes. It supposedly causes clear thinking and concentration, but destroys relationships in the process. As we have seen in history, many horrible events were caused by hatred. Look at the Holocaust! Now with this minor background knowledge on hatred, let?s look at five steps on how to get people to hate you. (This part is satire. I don't support hate, so do not try to get people to hate you.)

1. Disagree with the touchiest of people on the touchiest of subjects. As we have seen in the psychology background knowledge paragraph, idealism (which can take form of opinions) is a common springboard for developing hatred. I have learned from personal experience! As soon as I had

.voiced my opinion on the patriarchy existing, 6 different people immediately started shouting at me. But that is just for short term hatred. You want to develop grudges. Speaking of that..

This photo is from USAweekly.com

2. Keep grudges. Guilt is another common proponent of hatred and this will happen. Say somebody wrongs you, like say they see you walking towards them and their friends and they run away so they don?t have to talk to you. If they ever do apologize, never forgive. This grudge relationship will cause them to strongly hate you out of guilt.

3. Criticize people. Don?t just nitpick, use full-blown destruction of everything they love! Are they a Minecraft fan? Tell them that it is a garbage sandbox game with crazy 8-year old fans, Atari age graphics, and music you would hear from a 3rd grade piano recital.

4. Be a total hypocrite to the hate. You are hating these people, and in return, getting a lot of hate, and one way to get more of it is to be a hypocrite. So after you finished ripping apart everything they love, telling them you will never forgive them, and destroying all of their political beliefs, tell them that hatred is wrong and that they need to stop being evil. You can even sprinkle in a little #LOVETRUMPSHATE.

5. Do ?pranks?. Basically, make different attempts to ruin their lives in the most horrible of ways, and whenever they call you out for it, use the famous line, ?It?s just a prank bro?. It?s simple as that.

I h ave m an aged t o also get exclu sive in t er view s w it h 2 an on ym ou s people. On e is a pu blic-pr oclaim ed h at e spon ge, an d on e is n ot h at ed by an ybody. I ch an ged an y n am es t h at w er e u sed.

INTERVIEW ONE: Wh en did you becom e a h at e spon ge? In a teacher ?s class. A certain teacher started the hate sponge thing last year. Every day anybody was talking, it could be someone across the room. She is grading papers, she looks up, ?Ronald* ! Be quiet!?. I look up and she has walked across the room. ?Ronald* ! Be quiet!?

Wh at m ak es a h at e spon ge a h at e spon ge? A hate sponge is when a people commonly hate on a student to the point where students pick on that person thinking its okay. I k n ow people h at e an d pick on you jok in gly, an d act u ally ar e good f r ien ds w it h you in r ealit y, bu t do an y of you r peer s h at e you n on -jok in gly? Obviously there is people who will non jokingly hate you. I have a fair share of people who hate me non-jokingly, sometimes they do it just for fun. INTERVIEW TWO: Wh y ar e you n ot a h at e spon ge? I don?t like to think of myself as a hate sponge because I try to be nice to everybody. Everybody should have a chance to be treated kindly. Wer e you ever a h at e spon ge? Um? Yeah. (I ask if t h e per son is w illin g t o u n f old h er t r agic back st or y) I would prefer not to. Overall, I feel that the meaning of hatred as a psychological outlet of the negative side of other feelings is wrong, but must be examined closely to truly understand it. We now have a deeper understanding after talking to people who have experienced different amounts of hate, discussing how hate is built, and what hate is, in general. So if you have ever wondered why somebody hates you so much, whether it is jokingly or not, I hope you know now.
