Since then, millions of young active citizens have united together to create sustainable impact in their communities. Today we have nearly 170,000 members in 120 countries and 5,000 communities around the world. What started as a dream in a single location has become a global movement for peace and a brighter tomorrow. As we embark on this exciting future, we must take time to remember our past. Each year of the JCI Movement takes us one step closer to better communities and a better world. Change comes one smile at a time. The mission of JCI is to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. The heart of this mission is to empower young people, and this is what I have experienced as well. From leadership on the local level to now leading on the international level, JCI has provided development opportunities that connect my commitment with the issues that I am passionate about. Tonight you join the hundreds of thousands of JCI members, past and present, all around the world who this year are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the JCI movement. For one century we have been changing lives, changing communities and changing the world so that all can be better. I believe that 2015 is a year of togetherness – which is why this is the theme we have chosen for the upcoming 2015 Asia Pacific Conference. Of course, there is the togetherness as we come together to celebrate this anniversary of JCI. But more importantly, it is important to recognize the spirit of togetherness that allows us to fulfill our JCI Mission. JCI is the organization that unites all sectors of society to create positive change. Whether it is by Local Members coming together, or Local Members working with National Members, or Members from one country working with Members of another, or JCI Members working with business and government. We understand that when we all come together as active citizens we can really create a meaningful and sustainable impact.

2015 JCI Vice President

Not many non-profit organizations around the world can claim to be one hundred years old. Even less can claim to be dedicated to transforming young people to young active citizens with the objective of creating positive change and sustainable impact.

Philippines

This is exactly where we find ourselves as an organization - one hundred years of making a difference, and this is why we are here tonight – to celebrate that accomplishment and to motivate ourselves to do even more in the next hundred years.

“The work of a JCI Member is never finished, precisely because as the world evolves, new problems emerge. It is a future that has always been uncertain, yet hopeful, because of organizations like the JCI whose dynamism, youthful vigor, and positive outlook make it a force of change to be reckoned with, whatever the circumstance.” So as the members of JCI Philippines converge to celebrate one hundred years of community leadership, we stand as one with the JCI World in committing to create more positive change by spreading more impact, to connect with all sectors of society, and by caring through the alignment of the Active Citizen Framework to the needs of our local communities, not just in 2015, but beyond. Let me take this opportunity to congratulate the men and women of JCI Philippines’ 100th Year Celebration Committee for their hard work, dedication, and professionalism. To the “elder statesmen” of JCI Philippines – our Past National Presidents and Past National Officers, the National Board, Senators, the Batch Legacy Presidents, our members, business partners, and our guests, there is no limit to what we can achieve for as long as we move forward purposefully and in unity. Here is to another century of positive change and another hundred years of impact!

Marc Brian C. Lim 2015 National President JCI Philippines

Republic of the Philippines HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Quezon City, Metro Manila My warmest greetings to the Junior Chamber International Philippines, Inc. as you celebrate the JCI’s Worldwide 100th Year Anniversary on May 30, 2015. As a proud member of JCI World, I am one with you in this landmark occasion of continued fulfillment of the JCI’s commitment in helping people become better individuals. I trust that JCI will continue its eagerness to be agents of development and create a greater impact to our society, as you inculcate among your members the valuable role they play in building better communities. Your dedication to create positive change by promoting the values of leadership and service is a feat that deserves accolade. It is indeed an honor to have been part of JCI and JCI Philippines’ history. What a great and grand organization we belong to!

In the last 100 years, it (JCI) had touched so many lives. Through time, not only had our various projects effected positive change to our community, JCI had, also transformed and improved us to became active citizens, as it still continues to do so with the newer generations!

In the last 100 years, it had touched so many lives. Through time, not only had our various projects effected positive change to our community, JCI had, also transformed and improved us to became active citizens, as it still continues to do so with the newer generations! Occasions like these are important. We get to gather together to reminisce the good old days. It makes “old alumnus” like us rejuvenated and reinvigorated by fond memories of the good ol’ days. Undoubtedly, here at home, JCI (or the Jaycees, as we had fondly called ourselves) had enhanced us in so many ways. As it had done for me, I am sure that this unique institution had “polished”, transformed us and helped create the future for us beyond the confines of our organization. It had contributed to a better quality of life for us. Hopefully, it will do even more for our younger members. I anticipate that these recollections of past glories, will make them proud of what Junior Chamber International have become and excite them to take the cudgels, achieve more, and move JCIP to the next level. More importantly, in the process of doing so, enhance their own personal potentials to the hilt. After all, this is what JCI is all about. Congratulations to the organizers headed by NP Brian and NC Bea. I, also, congratulate for being part of the first 100 years of JCI, all here present tonight, the thousands throughout the country who were not able to come, and the millions throughout the world who had been a JC, at one time or another. With conviction I say: Like a brick that made a wall, it was each and every JC’s contribution of themselves, through every generation, that made this institution how grand it has become today! You deserve an outstanding ovation! More power to JCI and what it stands for!

Crispin Dy Jr. 1998 JCI World Senate Chairman 1997 JCI World President 1991 JCI Philippines National President

It is with a great privilege that I greet you my fellow Jaycees with the warmth of my heart on the auspicious celebration of one of the world’s greatest organization for young people, JCI, on its centennial anniversary this year. We, past and present Jaycees, have much to be thankful for, joining what many call “the university of life” that has marked the turning point of the lives of many of us. Getting actively involved in the Jaycees through leadership training and direct experience has enabled men and women I met to broaden their horizons, added excitement and fulfilment to their life, and helped understand what it takes to make a contribution to society, to the country, to the communities, and to our family.

The bond of brotherhood and genuine friendship we have cultivated over the years as Jaycees opened limitless opportunities for its members to grow in our careers and professional development, improving our lives and enriching our understanding of people.

Our fellowships provided memorable moments of our affection towards one another. On my part I cannot thank our great organization enough for the foundations it has given me in making the organizations I worked with, private and government, rise up to make a positive contribution to the economy and to our country. In looking forward to our historic gathering come end of this month let us reflect on the mission and vision of JCI and continue to commit ourselves to developing more young men and women for a future role in making a positive change to our world. MABUHAY ANG JAYCEES! MABUHAY ANG JCI! MABUHAY ANG JCI PHILIPPINES!

Warm greetings from Lansing, Michigan, USA and I hope that all is well with each of you today! It is my pleasure to bring you greetings and best wishes during this celebration of 100 years of JCI tonight at the Solaire Grand Ballroom. Indeed it was 100 years ago that the first group of young people gathered in the St. Louis, Missouri, USA area and became committed to being better leaders for a better society – creating active citizens.

“Your national organization has served as an example for other groups of JCI members throughout the world and they have become better through the active engagement of so many of your Members and Senators.”

JCI Philippines has much to be proud of, I know this not just because I have seen the involvement of your NOM at International Events, but also through visiting your country five times and counting several of your members as personal friends. I look forward to visiting again in the future. I wish that my schedule would have allowed me to attend the event this evening and I appreciate the very kind invitation to celebrate with you tonight. I know it will be a night to remember for all those involved and offer congrats on a successful event to President Brian Lim and every member of the team who planned the event and participated by attending. Have a great evening, all the best, and If I can ever be of assistance, please let me know.

Identify the Community Determine if you will target a community where JCI exists, or a community where JCI does not exist to create sustainable impact. To achieve lasting impact, we must examine and understand the needs of the community. Therefore this step requires active citizens to analyze internally and externally to prepare themselves to address community’s challenges.

Connect with Community Stakeholders Enabling a community to achieve sustainable impact requires young active citizens and community support. To find such resources, one must immerse oneself in the community, identifying stakeholders who can connect you to young leaders and sources of support. Meet with individuals from all sectors to begin building relationships that will lead to sustainable impact.

Engage Young Community Leaders Enabling a community to achieve sustainable impact requires a core group of passionate individuals who can ensure momentum is not lost in the community. These “young community leaders” will be the foundation from which the organization is built and developed. These motivated leaders can bring a fresh perspective and new energy that will engage and empower other young active citizens to join.

Impact

FIVE STEP ACTION PLAN

to enable communities to achieve sustainable impact

Unite Active Citizens Once the foundation for a strong organization is established, it is time to work with the young leaders to promote the opportunity to create positive change. Encourage them to go five for five, each bringing five active citizens to unite through an empowering event, which will inspire them to take actions that create sustainable impact. Build an Impactful Local Organization With strong, committed leaders and a passionate group of motivated members, you are ready to strengthen the Local Organization both within the community and the Junior Chamber International movement. Using the JCI Active Citizen Framework as a guide, these empowered young people are prepared to take action that will unite all sectors of society to create sustainable impact in their community.

A Single Active Citizen

5 Young Leaders

Enabling Communities to Achieve Impact

Basic Cycle

JCI members around the world recognize their responsibility for creating sustainable impact. The ability to ensure global development begins in local communities. By developing JCI Local Organizations that will provide relevant, needs-based actions and solutions to community problems JCI will not only attract those assisted directly by the project but also those interested in belonging to an organization known for creating sustainable impact. Your passion, action and results will keep your organization at the front of others’ minds and position JCI as the organization that unites all sectors of society to create sustainable impact.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippines, a reliable partner in community service, on the occasion of its celebration of JCI’s 100th Year. Everything that we have done since our founding, the past 100 years of impact – from local to international collaboration on projects ranging from growing our general membership, assisting refugees and victims of calamities, providing medical care, advancing education, building business partners and promoting equality – has been in pursuit of that one goal: to create positive change.

Therefore, as we mark this 100 years anniversary, let’s not simply commemorate history. Let’s rededicate ourselves and unite according to the causes and values for which our founding fathers fought and taught us.

For this has been our work since Henry Giessenbier founded this organization in 1915. It’s what allowed him to advance local actions that have made his 32 fellow young men in St. Louis, Missouri, USA an international organization in 1944. A century later, his reason for effecting positive change is still new in our hearts and minds, and it’s the same reason we are all in this together because our work is never finished. Therefore, as we mark this 100 years anniversary, let’s not simply commemorate history. Let’s rededicate ourselves and unite according to the causes and values for which our founding fathers fought and taught us. Again, congratulations to JCI Philippines, and I wish us all the best for a better world!

I would like to give my warmest felicitations and congratulations to JCI Philippines for your celebration of our beloved organization’s 100th Year Anniversary. It is indeed a momentous occasion for JCI Members worldwide as very few organizations can claim to be at the forefront of creating positive change, and even fewer who can claim that they develop young people to be leaders not just in their communities, but also in the realm of business, public service, and other civic advocacies. Indeed, we have come a long way since Henry Giessenbier founded the JCI Movement in 1915. Today we are an organization composed of nearly 200,000 members, each day creating action that leads to sustainable impact through our Active Citizen Framework, making our world today a little better than yesterday. We have proven our resiliency, our unity, and our dedication in helping our fellow man.

Kazuyasu Ueshima JCI Adviser

JCI Philippines is the first national organization established in the AsiaPacific Region. Since then, it has been a leading NOM in spreading the JC Movement in our Area. I really appreciate your continuous support and contribution to our organization.

Now I urge everyone to continue our legacy of excellence, to continue spreading Jayceeism across the globe, to getting more young people involved in creating positive change. Let today be the start of another one hundred years of impact. Congratulations once again JCI Philippines!

Malaysia

Our warmest congratulations to JCI Philippines on the occasion of your grand celebration of JCI’s Centennial Anniversary.

“JCI Malaysia and JCI Philippines have a long standing relationship that has spanned decades, made closer with the friendship pact we have with each other. This relationship is not only at the national level but also at the local level. Many of the local organizations in Malaysia have sisterhood pacts with the local organizations of JCI Philippines. Our members have learned a lot from each other through the years of friendship. We are pleased to see that the JCI Value “that brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations” is manifested in this partnership. This year, JCI Malaysia is proud to host JCI’s Asia Pacific Conference in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from 11-14 June 2015. The program is packed with training, seminars, national parties, meetings, and other interesting programs. We will also showcase the variety of culture that we have in Malaysia. In addition, Sabah State offers you a variety of exciting activities, be it hiking at Mount Kinabalu; diving and snorkeling at the beautiful tropical islands; shopping for traditional handicrafts and many more activities to keep you entertained. We look forward to the strong presence of JCI Philippines at the ASPAC as we seek support from National President Brian Lim and the National Board of Directors to bring a large delegation of your members to Malaysia, as we continue to celebrate JCI 100 Years Anniversary in this area conference. Our team is ready to provide a memorable experience and warm hospitality to all of you JCI Philippines Members.

On behalf of each and every one of the members of JCI Japan, I would like to take this opportunity to warmly congratulate our fellow members in JCI Philippines, as we join in celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the JC Movement.

Japan

The JCI Philippines has played a dynamic role in contributing to the development of the Philippines, as one of its leading youth organizations. All of your achievements, which are broad ranging, and founded on a deep devotion to excellence, are the results of the efforts of the many capable Past Presidents, leaders and members of your National Organization. And now, under the leadership of National President Marc Brian Lim, you are continuing this proud tradition and opening new paths to peace and prosperity for the young people of your beautiful country.

Both of our National Organizations continue to take the lead in the development of the JCI movement in the Asia Pacific Area, and around the world, and I am confident that we will continue to break new ground in the years and decades to come, forging golden memories together and creating new friendships with one another. This year in November, as the culmination of a year of celebrations, the 2015 JCI World Congress will be taking place in Japan, in Kanazawa, and we are eagerly looking forward to welcoming many members of JCI Philippines to what will be a once in a lifetime event. I hope that as many of you as possible will join us in Kanzawa, have the chance to meet with many of your fellow members of JCI from around the world, and enjoy the many opportunities that will be available to you to encounter firsthand the traditions and culture of Japan, which I believe are unique in the world. I wish to close by letting you know just how much I look forward to witnessing the success and development of JCI Philippines and each of its many treasured members led by President Marc Brian Lim in the future.

Warmest greetings from Hong Kong! On behalf of JCI Hong Kong, I wish to extend our congratulations to JCI Philippines on this special occasion at which you and your fellow members shall be celebrating JCI’s 100th Anniversary.

Hong Kong

In the past decades, JCI has brought positive change around the globe and trained many leaders along the way. What makes JCI Members unique is not only how we constantly seek to create positive change within ourselves, but take upon the responsibility of creating sustainable impact in our communities. In addition, JCI members always find a common ground against the most pervasive issues of our time.

JCI Philippines, where the first JCI organization in Asia was formed, continues to manifest the JCI Mission not only in your local communities but around the world. I would also like to salute the senior members of your national organization who offer unfailing support to JCI Philippines, especially to those who brought the JCI Movement to Hong Kong in the late 40’s. My utmost congratulations to all of you for celebrating JCI’s 100 years of impact in the Philippines. May I wish this memorable event every success!

I am deeply honored to be part of the committee tasked to prepare for our national organization’s celebration of JCI’s centennial year. The Junior Chamber International, or JCI, has always been a force of positive change, creating impact all over the world. Whether it is on an international scale such as Operation HOPE, or at the national level such as OPLAN Kaagapay, and even the projects of our local organizations, JCI has continued to prove that its actions can be relied upon, its members professional and dependable, and its output effective and measurable. I consider it a privilege to be part of this organization which continues to empower young people around the world to develop as leaders, and gives them the necessary opportunities to create positive change and sustainable impact. My thirteen years with JCI has led me to a path of selfdiscovery as well. I have learned that I can overcome my perceived weaknesses and make a difference, no matter how small, and always in my own unique and simple way. JCI has changed the way I approach helping others - when I was hesitant, now it comes naturally. I have learned to leave my comfort zone and make friends with total strangers with JCI as our only commonality. Through my active participation in various JCI activities, I have learned to be more outgoing and to be more involved in “service to humanity”. As a JCI Member and as a Filipino, there is no better time to create a more ideal world than today. Thank you JCI for igniting my passion to serve, and I sincerely thank my fellow JCI Members for the opportunity to learn from them. May the light of positive change the last hundred years continue to shine brightly for hundreds more! Mabuhay JCI!

Today we remember the profound beginnings of an organization that has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. Today we look back at the extensive samplings of leadership demonstrated by countless young men and women who led a brave corps of young people. They have all shown audacity and spirit in giving flesh to a vision that has bound this organization for a century. Today we celebrate our proud history as a grassroots organization. We were founded over 100 years ago as group of diverse professionals looking to share ideas and form friendships. Since then, JCI has grown to a worldwide organization with millions of members and alumni with a common goal: providing development opportunities that create positive change. Today, many of these young people have joined the next corps of leaders who continue to believe that partnership and collaboration knows no limits or age. All Senators from JCI Senate Philippines shares the joy and vision of the first national organization in Asia, and we stand alongside with all young leaders today in pursuing such shared goal. We stand alongside all members of JCI in the Philippines because we share in the pride of what we have achieved for the last 100 years, and how these contributed to what JCI achieved throughout the world. With JCI members in key leadership roles in all fields of endeavor, imagine the life-saving work, the impact we can, and continue to do to the world. This is the finest memory and lasting impact that we share with all the young men and women of JCI Philippines and the Junior Chamber International on its 100 years. Together we shall continue to stand proud with you in the next 100 years

Alipio F. Fernandez Jr. 2015 National President JCI Senate Philippines

Everything that we’ve done since our founding, the past 100 years of impact – from local to international collaboration on projects ranging from growing our general membership, assisting refugees and victims of calamities, providing medical care, advancing education, building business partners and promoting equality – it’s been in pursuit of that one goal: to create lasting positive change.

Indeed, we’ve grown in tough circumstances, but we do strive to guarantee that everyone is working as a team – never alone – so that all kinds of opportunities are accessible to everyone around us. It’s all about continuing the legacy, just the way the National Board of the Regular Members, the Senate, and the Senate Foundation are leading the change in this new era of responsibility.

Therefore, as we mark our centennial anniversary, let’s not simply relive past accomplishments. Instead, let us motivate one another to enter a new century of Jayceeism with vigor and positivity. Congratulations Philippines!

COLLABORATE

9 Facts Every Creative Needs to Know About Collaborative Teams Behind every successful creative story is a great team of passionate people who raised each other’s game. Each individual focuses on productivity, but what really takes the project to the next level is by improving the teams and understanding the psychological factors that turn a group of individuals into a solid unit.

3. Virtual teams can do better than face-to-face teams. Cisco conducted a survey in 2009 and revealed that 69% of thousands of teleworkers increased their productivity while working remotely. Similarly, 83% admitted that their communication with other team members was neither unaffected nor improved despite the isolation. Another research team led by Frank Siebdrat assessed the performance of 80 software companies in 2009. His team found that virtual teams often outperform “co-located” teams because the process is more organized, such as is the most important factor in the success of a remote team to ensure that each member contributes fully. 4. A balance of extroverts and introverts makes for a better team. Corrine Bendersky and Neha Parikh Shah

Here are nine facts that can help how to help optimize the team selection and working habits; thereby maximizing the opportunity of working with others.

they recommend that the most effective mix is a balance of complementary personalities.

According to “social facilitation” effect in social psychology, the presence of other people engaged in similar task can boost motivation. In 1920, social psychologist Floyd Allport showed how a group of people working individually in one table performed better on their tasks though there was no cooperation or competition. His research illustrated how other people’s energy can pass as a substitute team though a person works alone.

Sports teams have the advantage when they compete in their home stadium because of the familiar surroundings and familiar faces around them. Constantly working with the same people gives the opportunity to learn their strengths and weaknesses and develop unspoken habits and rules that encourage mutual understanding. The presence of other people engaged in the same task can boost motivation.

5. Most good teams have one analytic thinker on board. Ishani Aggarwal and Anita Woolley at the Tepper School of Business found that teams with an analytic thinker perform better because they focus on the details of the project, pay more attention in identifying sub-tasks, and take note of the resources needed to complete them. However, they warned that big picture thinkers

and analytical thinkers can disagree on strategic priorities, which can harm the performance of the team. 6. Teams perform better when they include both men and women. In 2012, Credit Suisse released a publication and analysis of approximately 2,400 international companies saying that a diverse team at least one woman on the board and balanced leadership skills are the strongest performers. Likewise, European researchers revealed in 2011 that teams with equal number of men and women performed best at a business venture game because they monitor each other more often to ensure that everyone performs their team.

individual team members but on the higher proportion of women in the group and how each member take turns during conversation. The research led by Anita Woolley suggests that each team should be tested for “social sensitivity”, just like how each individual is assessed. If a team fails at this assessment, then or train the team in better communication. 9. The best teams communicate outside of formal meetings. Researchers at MIT Human Dynamics Laboratory revealed that conversations outside of formal meetings are the most important factor that contributes to team success. Their research showed that the energy and engagement of these informal interactions accounts for one third of the differences in productivity between groups. The most productive creative teams hit the perfect balance between sourcing new ideas from outside the team and integrating ideas within the team.

Research showed that “micro-cultures” are strong when the team is formed based on social identity, such as gender or ethnicity. According to psychologist Doris Fay, divisions in multi-disciplinary teams can also be formed along shared professional identities. Hence, it should be made sure that there is a plenty of communication between team members and each member is committed to the same cause. The team should also evaluate its own performance. 8. 4. Share everything you can. FGOs.org recommends seven key strategies how knowledge, and skills of its volunteers. 1. Make them feel at home. Make sure that volunteers feel that they are a part of the organization. Provide them with a comfortable workplace, introduce them to other staff and volunteers, and keep them updated with what is going on in the organization. Volunteers do not only want to help but they also want to enjoy their time with the organization. 2. Understand the volunteers.

areas, such as management or research, while others opted to volunteer because they support your cause. Do not be afraid to ask why they chose to work in the organization to maximize their skills and talent while providing them with a truly valuable experience. Listening and understanding each volunteer individually will keep them motivated.

The more volunteers know, the more they will be able to do their job better and help the organization further. Share with them the plans, goals, and hopes. Volunteers are oftentimes on the frontline so they have plenty of ideas, notice the small stuff, and experience situations that most of the management do not. Volunteers your new service, Allow them to see how they can contribute to the bigger picture. 5. Show appreciation to their work. Just like any worker, volunteers feel better about their work if they are appreciated and assured that they are making a positive contribution. Let your volunteers know that they are making a positive impression and share with them their contributions to the organization, such as helping out in raising funds for the organization, assisting in developing new projects, and supporting the organization. Stop and thank them for their work, at least once a day. 6. Thank and reward the volunteers.

not survive without its volunteers. Show your volunteers that you appreciate their support so that they will realize their true value. A thank you letter with personal touch and signed by all staff members will give a nice impression, but a special dinner for them will surely make them feel special.

3. Give back and invest. Volunteers are giving up their time, skills, and expertise to support your cause; hence, it is your responsibility to repay them and invest in them. Show courtesy by walking them through their tasks, regardless how basic and obvious they are. Answer their questions respectfully, ensure them that you are always around, and show them that you support them should problems occur.

There are times that volunteers will have to stop working. During these times, it is important to show that you understand and support them. CONNECT

The Engagement Pyramid: Six Levels of Connecting People and Social Change The Engagement Pyramid has six levels different levels of engagement that people can have within an organization, as discussed by Gideon Rosenblatt, former Executive Director of Groundwire. Organizations utilize the pyramid to allow comprehensive thinking on various methods and techniques available to them and match the opportunities with its members for a higher possibility of success when it is carried out. The vertical dimension exhibits represents the intensity of engagement — low-level, lightweight engagement at the bottom and high-intensity, deep engagement at the top — while the horizontal dimension represents the number of people involved. The combination results to a pyramid with plenty of mildly-engaged people at the bottom and a few deeply-engaged people at the top.

communications that focus on informationsharing and awareness-building, such as word-of-mouth, websites, blogs, social media, or published articles in blogs, newspapers, and magazines. This level of engagement is unaided recognition polling.

aims to offer value and secure permission to deliver direct, proactive communications via subscription to newsletter, email list, or RSS feeds. The person engaged in this level shows interest in the cause and interest of the organization by providing his contact information to receive updates and information about it. This level is evaluated through its RSS and newsletter subscriptions, click-through metrics. Twitter followers, and Facebook fans.

Engagement Level 3, called “Endorsing”, seeks of the work by low-level membership pledges, email forwarding, petition signing, becoming a Facebook fan or a Twitter follower to inform and stimulate interest leading to straightforward, single-step transactions with little risk or investment of resources. The person engaged in this level allows his name to be used to endorse campaign because he believes in the mission and trusts the organization. “Endorsing” level measures its success based on the number of memberships, social media sharing, public endorsements, and conversion and renewal rates.

Also known as “Contributing”, Engagement Level 4 aims to deepen the commitment to mission and work of the organization through personal emails, phone calls, or face-to-face meetings, to inform, arouse interest, and coordinate on a special project or request funds. The person engaged in this level contributes the organization. Engagement Level 1, the bottom level of the Engagement Pyramid, is labelled “Observing”. It strives to inspire initial and repeat contact with the organization through random, indirect

volunteers, volunteer hours, contributed dollars, conversion, and renewal rates.

philanthropy should be authentic to the company’s the story of Toms Shoes. The primary goal of engagement level 5, referred to as “Owning”, is to instill and develop a sense of responsibility for the mission and work of the organization through personal emails, phone calls, or face-to-face meetings, to collaborate on ongoing projects. The measure of success for “Owning” level become less quantitative and more subjective, which requires evaluation through interviews and surveys.

Blake Mycoskie launched Toms Shoes in 2006. He had a very creative hook that will set his company different from the competitive shoe market. That is, for every pair of canvas sold, Toms will donate a pair of canvas Toms gave away 10,000 pairs of shoes. In its second year, the number soared to 200,000.

Engagement Level 6, the topmost level known as “Leading”, seeks to develop leadership skills and opportunities by personal emails, phone calls, and face-to-face meetings to inform, stimulate interest, and support the mission. Similar to the previous level, “Leading” level is assessed by opinions through interviews and surveys. *This is a digest from an article derived from IdealWare.

5 Things Entrepreneurs Can Learn From the Philanthropic Struggles of TOMS Shoes The Millennials, or the Generation Y, will spend more than $200 billion each year starting in 2017. In order to catch those millennial dollars, entrepreneurs do some philanthropic work as part of their marketing strategy and product development. However, attaching a charitable donation tag on each sale is not enough. The

However, many philanthropists say that donating shoes is not the best way to help poor communities. It can even harm them as well as the local cobblers, creating an economy of dependence. Likewise, in their article, Fast Company says the act is a temporary solution for a system that needs long-term, comprehensive economic development, health, education, and sanitation solutions. Toms has now expanded beyond shoes, went back to the drawing board, and came up with more thoughtful forms of giving. The company now donates a birth kit with the sale of every bag and gives money to provide clean water with every bag of coffee sold. Toms still donates shoes but they are now sourcing it from local producers to support struggling economies. Valeria Budinich, leadership member at Ashoka, and entrepreneurs can do to incorporate philanthropy in their business and create a double bottom line — increasing earnings while doing good.

1. Do not manipulate your customers. More than older customers, Millennials have very strong lie detectors. They can easily distinguish when a charitable offering is authentic or done only to make the company look compassionate.

Budinich recommends that entrepreneurs should think how they can involve their customers as

2. Be thoughtful about your supply chain. Many businesses want to get noticed with marketing campaigns, such as promising organic ingredients or locally-sourced foods. supply chain as part of your social-good pitch, you should follow through and play consistent. Trivializing and turning the campaign into a very opportunistic behavior is the worst thing to do. 3. Build philanthropy into the core of your business. Incorporate philanthropy into every aspect of the business — from your suppliers, your treatment to employees, to how you distribute the charitable dollars — and you will create social impact from the employee level up to the institutional level.

5. Learn from others’ mistakes. Companies like Toms and Nike needed to take drastic steps to assure customers that they are sincere when they comment on “doing good while doing well”. Each entrepreneur starting their own businesses should take the opportunity to see what other companies have done and avoid similar mistakes. Doing philanthropic work as part of the business can organically into the business model, skipping philanthropy can help your business more.

*This is a digest from an article derived from Forbes.

4. Find a concrete way to show your impact. Millennials want to see proof that their money has a real impact. This is the reason why Kai Buehler created Causora, an online platform that connects brands with causes to help millennials offer tangible contributions with every purchase, such as a free meal, feeding program, and clean water. Buehler says that 90% of consumers like to shop brands that repay; however, it should be aligned with the product and the company.
