Welcome to the 2nd issue of JCI Leader, the premiere publication of JCI Philippines. It is true what they say about how time flies so fast. Just a few weeks ago, we were just working on the 1st issue of JCI Leader, now we have the 2nd copy of the JCI Leader out. We promise you another fully packed issue. Our cover features the very first JCI Philippines Presidents Cup Golf Tournament. A project that aims not only to raise funds for JCIP, but also gives JCI members an avenue to promote camaraderie. Another event that was highly anticipated during the first half of the year was the Philippine Elections. JCI Philippines did its part as an active citizen by promoting voter education. JCI My Positive Change featured 4 of the vice presidential candidates. We were able to interview the candidates and show the voters their platforms and where they stand on different issues. We also have in this issue, the Ten Outstanding Young Men Awards. A highly coveted award that honors Ten young men and women who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields. These are just some of the stories that you will encounter in this issue of the JCI Leader. We hope you enjoy‌. Next Stop ASPAC Kaoshung!!

national board meeting (jcip) O

n January 9, 2016, the 2016 JCI Philippines 1st National Board Meeting was held at the JCI Philippines Headquarters in Quezon City.

With the 2016 National Officers from all Areas present, plans from the offices of the National Executive Vice President, National Treasurer, National Secretary General, and National Training Director were presented. Fresh from the 1st National Chairpersons Academy, the National Chairpersons were also given the opportunity to present their plans to the National Board. National Chairman for Beyond Prison Walls Majella Gallevo-Bambo talked about this year’s target to contribute to the improvement of prison facilities and the quality of life in the prison cells. “We want to provide legal, health and wellness, and economic assistance to the inmates”, she added. National Chairman for JCI Advantage also took the opportunity to share her goals for JCI Advantage. NC Vicky shared that the primary objective of JCI Advantage is to add value to the annual membership dues paid by JCI Philippines members. She also plans to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship with JCI Philippines. JCI National Chairman for JCIP Merchandise Tina Caswell showcased JCIP BLU to the members of the National Board. And lastly, National Director for Development Council (NDC) Steve Arquiza presented the B.U.I.L.D (Basic Understanding in Leadership Development) Program which was created to guide new or newly revived LOs by providing technical assistance on their internal growth and development programs. “It is to generate long-term and sustainable membership growth through effective chapter management and administration”, he said. It is indeed an exciting year for the JCI Philippines! 2016 National President Steve Tycangco expressed his gratitude to his National Board and Chairpersons for working very hard in ensuring that JCI Philippines will give better value and services to its members. He encouraged everyone to keep the momentum to “Build as One’ and work together to achieve our goals as a National Organization.

Mid Year Academy

T

he Mid Year Break used to be just a simple gathering that evolved over time into an event where presidents of the different local organizations of JCI Philippines have the opportunity to bond, reflect, and learn more during the midway of their term as the standard bearer of their respective chapters. The Mid Year break where the presidents would get together and socialize, slowly morphed into an event that would help the presidents of different local organizations re-energize, revitalize and reassess their terms. This event became what is now known as the Mid Year Academy. This year, JCI Philippines invited its affiliated local chapters to bid for hosting the 2016 Midyear Academy for the Batch 101 Presidents. Bidding for this much-awaited mid-year gathering would showcase nature’s wonders in the Philippines. Two chapters, JCI Narra Grains and JCI Angeles Culiat vied for the host chapter position; both complied with the guidelines issued by the office of the National Training Director. After a careful deliberation, one came out victorious-JCI Narra Grains. 2014 President Joaquin Panaligan shall lead the chapter in this intake, together with 2016 National Training Director, Chenny Galano. Tagged as Build As One in Palawan: Batch 101 Presidents Midyear Academy is slated to be yet another fun, exciting and worthwhile event this coming May 27 to 29, 2016. Watch out for more information. We are on Facebook! Please like our page, Batch 101 Presidents Midyear Academy. See you in Palawan!

FLEXing it! s the year opened and members of JCI Philippines take the challenge of leading the organization towards one goal, we have also opened a new opportunity for them to achieve this challenge. In January, a partnership with Organizational Change Consultants International, or better known as OCCI was introduced to JCI Philippines. The collaboration supports the vision of achieving the vision of Peace is Possible through working towards becoming better so we can work hand-in-hand in creating better communities for the Filipinos. The collaborative partnership introduced two programs called Foundations of Leadership Excellence (FLEX) and Advance Leadership Course (ALC).

JCIP – FLEX Batch 2 followed the next month on February 27 -28, 2016 hosted by JCI Philippines, JCI Makati Princess Urduja and JCI Ortigas also held at the JCIP Headquarters in Quezon City. This batch has produced a total of 34 graduates including 5 Presidents from Batch 101. It keeps getting better with each roll-out we do. Onto JCIP – FLEX Batch 3 in Cebu on April 30 – May 1, 2016 hosted by JCI Cebu and JCI WoMandaue held at BIG Hotel in Mandaue City. This batch has produced 30 graduates including our Central Visayas’ very own RVP Disston Tan, 2013 National Training Director, Bimbo Gabor, and 5 Presidents from Batch 101.

FLEX was introduced to the JCI Philippines membership with a vision that aims to harness the potentials of every JCI member to be the best that they can be by learning the most basic yet effective principles in creating everlasting peace.

Because of how well-received the program is, we continued to get lots of requests to conduct FLEX. we’ve reached JCIP – FLEX Batch 4 in CDO on June 25 – 26, 2016 hosted by JCI Philippines, JCI Macajalar 24k and JCI Kagayhaan Gold held at Philtown Hotel. This batch has the most number of graduates to date. It has produced 38 graduates including Northern Mindanao’s very own RVP Apple Cera – Quiblat, Western Mindanao’s very own RVP Lito Ayam and 4 Presidents from Batch 101.

To date, the partnership between JCI Philippines and OCCI has produced a total of 133 graduates. JCIP – FLEX Batch 1 debuted on January 23 -24, 2016 hosted by JCI Philippines held at the JCIP Headquarters in Quezon City. This batch has produced a total of 31 graduates including our very own National Treasurer, Ken Ngo and Metro Area’s Area Vice President, Bong Quiroga. This batch has also produced 5 graduates from Batch 101.

With every roll-out and with every member getting access to the 1st level of the program, the vision of empowering members to realize their potentials strengthens. The success of the roll-outs are really the members who go out and apply these basic yet most effective principles in their everyday life choices whether it is in their JCI career or their respective careers and home. So, are you ready to FLEX it?

My Journey to the world of

JCI PHILIPPINES By: VP Ryoma Koyama

s the JCI Vice President assigned to the Philippines, I had the previlege of visiting one of the best National Organization in JCI. During my visit, I experienced how JCI Philippines implement their projects. I was able to visit 4 projects during my stay. I was quite impressed with the projects as JCI Philippines was able to unite all sectors of the community, connecting to its community leaders to create a more sustainable impact. On the first day, National President Steve Allen Tycangco, together with National Secretary General Walter Uy, National Executive Director Chai Talag, and National Director for International Affairs McGeorge Yuquico, welcomed me with such warm hospitality. In the evening, I was able to attend JCI Manila’s welcome dinner for its sister chapters in the residence of 2016 LO President Rami. We then preceded to the Induction of JCI Ortigas in Alpha Tent. The next day was an opportunity to meet the Local Organization Presidents from Area 3. We took a helicopter ride to Batangas City to attend a project hosted by JCI Batangas Caballero, ‘Cheers to a 101 and Beyond Planting 101 Trees’. On my third day, I attend the project of JCI Manilena entitled “Child and Maternal Health Seminar” in Tondo, Manila. In the afternoon, we attended the awarding of The Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines (TOYM) at the Meralco Theater. On the Fourth day, we flew to Davao for the launching of the Tebow Cure Hospital, a project partnership between JCI Davao and Tim Tebow Foundation. In the evening, we attended the installation of JCI Makati Princess Urduja, the Local Organization of National Executive Director, Chai Talag. The installations I attended were very impressive. It was well organized and well attended. It also gave me an opportunity to get to talk to the members.

Message to JCI Philippines I appreciate your hospitality during my official visit. I would like to say thank you very much for your supporting JCI movement. I think that JCI Philippines is one of strongest organization, not only in Asia and the Pacific, but in the world, I hope that your organization will be the leading organization that will unite all sectors of Philippine society to create sustainable impact. As you already know, JCI begin its steps for the next 100 years. 100 years ago, JCI founder Mr. Henry Giessenbier established the vision, achieving everlasting world peace. To achieve world peace, we need to begin to reach out to our communities. Each Local organization must take an active role in creating positive impact for the world. Please continue to extend the circle of friendship through the JCI movement. Let’s take action to be better citizens of our our society. I wish you success in all your projects!! See you in Kaohsiung!!

CI Members are passionate in their work, but they are equally as passionate when they play their respective sports. There is an abundance of sports activities that JCI members participate in, but none can compare to the love of this particular sport...the sport of GOLF. Junior Chamber International seems like a perfect fit for Golf. JCI organizations around the globe hold various golf tournaments to raise funds and develop camaraderie within its members. This natural fit urged National President Steve Tycangco to hold the very first JCIP President's Cup Golf Tournament. The goal of the project was to raise funds to support JCIP Projects, as well as provide an avenue for JCIP golfers to have fun. But NP Steve envisions the JCIP Presidents Cup Golf Tournament as a yearly activity that can also help promote the JCI Brand. A project of this size may seem a herculean task for some people, but NP Steve Tycangco choose a man who is no stranger to big projects. National Chairman Nino Namoco of JCI Manila was more than ready to face this challenge. When asked why NC Nino accepted this project, “ I Just started playing golf a few years ago and i instantly got hooked. Golf not only brings out my competitive spirit, but it also gives me an opportunity to socialize and bond with like minded individuals. I think Golf can be a good avenue for JCI members to bond and get to know each other. So When NP Steve asked me to chair this project, I accepted.

NC Nino has high hopes for future runs of the JCIP Presidents Cup Golf Tournament. “ I can see the tournament get bigger in 2 to 3 years and expanding it to have Visayan or Mindanao leg. We can even invite players from other JCI National organizations since golf is pretty popular in Japan and Korea. The 2016 JCIP President's Cup Golf Tournament was held at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club on March 18, 2016. A total of 100 people from different JCI local organizations participated in the event and by the end of the day, the project was able to raise P700,000.00. Some of the notable guests were NP Steve Tycangco and NP Bernard Faustino Dy.

his year JCIP is celebrating its 68th Anniversary. The 2016 JCI Philippines Board of Directors (BOD) has developed its priority national programs towards the banner theme “Build As One”. One of the said priority national programs is BEYOND PRISON WALLS (BPW). BPW was conceptualized by the first JCIP National President, Ramon Del Rosario, Sr., to help the correctional community (“People Behind Bars”) in their Total Human Development based on the principles of balanced vand restorative justice, namely: (i) Human Rights Advocacy to the Accused; (ii) Sports, Cultural and Educational Programs; and (iii) Livelihood Programs/Projects. To further BPW’s advocacy, the JCIP 2016 BOD likewise deemed it proper to address one of United Nation’s Sustainable Goals, which is to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all level, through the implementation of BPW’s projects, some of which are Human Rights Advocacy (Righ to Health and Clean and Healthy Living) Projects such as donation of facilities (i.e. Electric fans, bed sheets, pillows, etc.), toiletries, napkins, clean, reusable clothes and other hygienic supplies, dental & medical mission, conducting Pinoy Laughter Yoga, stress debriefing, Sports, Cultural and Educational Projects such as donation of substantive reading materials (i.e. magazines, The Leader), conducting zumba, donation of basketballs, volleyballs and other sports equipment, Livelihood Projects such as conducting trainings on the technical know-hows (i.e. no-bake graham balls, organic goods, bracelet making, etc.), conducting trainings on shoe repairs, soap making, etc., Access to Justice Project such as legal seminar/talks and free legal aid/basic consultation. To officially launch the BPW Projects and Programs, 2016 President Cecille Apad of JCI Perlas Pasay, conducted a Medical Mission in collaboration with Kalusugan ng Kababaihang Pangkabayanan in Pasay City. They provided obstetrics and gynecology needs of its female detainees. Total of 172 female detainees were given OB-GYNE ultrasounds and consultations, breast examinations, VIAs, cryotherapies and cervical polypectomies. They were also given free meals – from breakfast to afteroon snack – and vitamins (good for one year) and medicines as described by the OB-GYNE doctors. They also offered free hsytopats and biopsy were also given to those who were in need of them. To assist and help chapters in the implementation of BPW Projects nationwide and consequently reach a greater number of inmates, JCIP through the effort of its BPW National Chair, Maje Gallevo-Bambo, provided electric fan and hygienic supplies to the inmates – prisoners and detainees. In this connection, sincerest gratitude goes out to BPW Major Sponsor, KAPANDESAL MULTIPURPOSE COOPERATIVE (represented by its Founding Chairperson, Carmela P. Tadeo and its CEO, Mary Ann H. JCI Kanazawa Conference

Unites Delegates to Develop Plans for the Advancement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals

J

ust a few months after JCI delegates congregated in Kanazawa, Japan for the 2015 JCI World Congress and to celebrate 100 Years of Impact by the JCI movement, JCI Japan and JCI Kanazawa couldn’t have a picked a more perfect time to bring JCI members back to their beautiful city as they hosted the first JCI Kanazawa Conference amidst the much anticipated cherry blossoms festival. Over 400 delegates from 19 countries attended the conference last April 1–2, 2016 to discuss the Global Goals for Sustainable Development and solidify JCI’s role in achieving these goals. As the 2016 appointed National Chairman of the UN SDG Committee, I had the wonderful privilege of representing JCI Philippines and be part of this momentous event to learn and share about effective strategies that would help address these global issues. Led by JCI World President and peace advocate Paschal Dike together with other key JCI leaders, the conference provided an

opportunity for the delegates to have a deeper understanding of the UN SDG in order to develop creative and sustainable action plans and solutions that can be implemented by their local and national organization. During the two-day conference, discussions were ignited by a variety of keynote speeches and forums delivered by professionals with expertise in sustainable development. Participants were privileged to hear from such leading figures in their fields as Mr. Makoto Murase, CEO of the Institute for Sky Water Harvesting who talked about water and sanitation, a key focus of JCI members in Asia as they committed their actions to address Global Goal 6 which ensures availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Another keynote speech was delivered by Director of UNDP Representation Office in Tokyo, Mr. Tetsu Kondo who discussed the UN SDG and their immediate relevance as well as why it is crucial for global citizens to implement them. One of the highlights of the conference was the Commemorative Forum on the final day facilitated by actress and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Misako Konno. The forum focused on the world that we live in today and emphasized how international cooperation can change our future. Delegates explored ways in which citizens can take action in their daily lives as well as the importance of working in collaboration with other stakeholders to create the most impact and positive change.

The conference culminated in a simple yet meaningful ceremony where JCI World President Pascal Dike left everyone with an inspiring message to continue to “just act and be active citizens and advocates of peace as we work together and unite for the advancement of the sustainable development goals. Empowered by the knowledge and experience that I gained from the Kanazawa conference, I am humbly reaching out to all the local organizations to rise up to the great challenges that our world is facing today starting with identifying the relevant goals in your respective communities and developing ways and strategies to take action to advance the UN SDG through local action and collaboration. As JCI active citizens, the best way to get involved is to simply adapt a global goal and make a commitment to advance these goals in your communities. To know more about the UN SDG, JCI members are also welcome to join the JCI Global Partnership Summit in New York on July 25-28, 2016. The summit will engage leaders from various sectors of society to discuss important challenges and opportunities that the global goals present and provide momentum for all delegates to return to their homes with the motivation to take responsibility and start taking action towards building a more peaceful and sustainable world.

2015 The Outstanding Young Men:

Building our Nation for Global Competitiveness By: Earl Leonard Sebastian

T

en new individuals have been added to the list of awardees of The Outstanding Young Men, the most prestigious award given to young Filipinos, held in a ceremony last January 27, 2016 at the Meralco Theater in Pasig City. Each of the awardees received a medal and a trophy. Inspired by the theme, “Building our Nation for Global Competitiveness”, the new batch of awardees are all very competent and respected in their fields of excellence:

The awardees were rigorously chosen from a list of 106 nominees between the ages 18 to 40, many of whom were submitted online – a submission process that was only introduced in 2015.

• Raymond Abrea, accounting and finance • Engr Jose Ramon Aliling, civil engineering • Michael Barney Almazar, law/legal aid • Geoffrey Brian Chua, education • Patricia Evangelista, journalism • Sofronio Fortich Jr, arts in music • Donald Patrick Lim, community development • Nico Jose Nolledo, business • Roderick Salenga, public health • Rogelio Santos Jr, social entrepreneurship

The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Awards was initiated by the Manila Jaycees as a chapter project in April 6, 1959. Subsequently, the Philippine Jaycees formally adopted the project on a national basis on October 15, 1959, during their 11th National Convention in Baguio City.

In particular, Donald Patrick Lim has been a long time member of JCI Manila, and was among the guest speakers of the first batch of Future Leaders Camp participants held in Cebu last year to discuss about branding of JCI. “The honorees are true models of exceptional young Filipinos worth emulating by the millennials and the nation in general,” said the organizers, led by National Chairperson Jaeger Tanco of JCI Ortigas, the Junior Chamber International (JCI) and the Gerry Roxas Foundation. 2015 JCI Philippines National President (and now JCI Vice President) Brian Lim also graced the induction and gave an inspiring message. The TOYM has honored more than 400 individuals in the last 5 decades for their achievements in the fields of public service, education, journalism, science, and the arts. It is an awards presented by the Junior Chamber International Philippines, the TOYM Foundation, and the Gerry Roxas Foundation.

In 1973, the Gerry Roxas Foundation co-sponsored the project, due to the similarity of its goal to promote leadership and exemplary innovation among the youth to address our nation’s development. On October 22, 1990, the TOYM Foundation was organized by past TOYM Awardees and Jaycee National Officers to provide support and continuity for the annual search. In 1996, it was changed to TOYF “The Outstanding Young Filipinos” to give women equal emphasis in the search. However, women were an integral part of the search since 1984. In 1999, the name was reverted back to its original name of TOYM to preserve the sanctity of the awards, as the word “men “ does not intend to distinguish the difference in gender. Over the years, the TOYM has become an institution, having developed a reputation for its selectiveness of outstanding young men upon whom the awards is conferred. TOYM seeks to give national recognition to young men and women between the ages of 18-40, whose selfless dedication to their profession or vocation has resulted in significant contributions to the welfare of their countrymen, as well as to the advancement of their fields of endeavor. #MyPositiveChange Voter Education Campaign BY ALEXANDER RICHMOND UY

|

2016 NATIONAL DIRECTOR FOR MARKETING

L

ast May 9, 2016, the Philippines went to the polls to vote for a new president, vice president, 12 senators, 297 representatives, governors, vice governors, mayors, vice mayors, city and municipal councilors as well as officials for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). The fate of the country for the next six years lies on these newly-elected president and other government officials that will assume office on June 30.

have, summarized the C.H.A.N.G.E. checklist – Clear Vision, Highly Passionate, Action-Oriented, Nationalistic, God-Centered and Excellent Track Record. The JCI Philippines-BABP Gabay Sa Pagboto was published online and also cascaded to JCI members for the purpose of sharing to their circles of influence and conducting community seminars. Many JCI Local Organizations across the country were able to conduct this much-needed voter education training.

Voting is one of the most important rights of every Filipino aged 18 and above. All registered Filipino voters, regardless of age, race, gender, location or financial status, have an equal power. Every vote is as important as the next. It is, indeed, the great equalizer.

In order to assist voters in their decision-making process, the #MyPositiveChange published highly-informative videos on YouTube and Facebook. The team invited all Vice-Presidential candidates for an interview to understand their #MyPositiveChange solutions to ten issues that the country is currently facing. Cong. Leni Robredo, Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero and Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV and Sen. Gregorio Honasan graciously accepted the team’s invitation.

Despite the record-breaking 40 million voter turnout this year, the elections are still taken for granted. It is still commonplace for voters to choose candidates based on popularity, affinity, hometown, or family name. An unfortunate truth is that vote buying or vote swapping continues to take place. To address this, JCI Philippines commissioned a voter education National Project that built upon the #MyPositiveChange marketing campaign started in 2015. The #MyPositiveChange voter education campaign, led by National Chairperson Miguel Roldan of JCI QC Capitol, was a multifaceted project targeted to the youth that comprise 56% of the total voting population. Knowing that the Filipino youth spend significant periods of time on Facebook, the team created the JCI Philippines My Positive Change Facebook Fanpage which published relevant and up-to-date electionrelated information. JCI Philippines also partnered with Bagong Ako, Bagong Pilipinas (BABP), a voter-education advocacy group, to cascade and utilize a comprehensive and well-formulated voter education guide. The guide highlighted qualities and characteristics that leaders should

The candidates discussed their #MyPositiveChange solutions to these issues: 1. The Increasing Drug Prevalence in the Philippines 2. The Unproductive Urban Traffic 3. The Burdensome and Uninviting Tax System 4. Poor Internet Speed and Connectivity 5. The Benefits and Welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers 6. The Difficulty of Doing Business 7. Pervasive Corruption at All Levels 8. The Peace and Order Situation in Mindanao 9. The Philippines’ Preparedness for the ASEAN Integration 10. Labor Contractualization Through the efforts of JCI members nationwide, JCI Philippines was able to help enlighten the voting public, develop relations with government officials and other organizations, and also garner wide-reaching media exposure through TV, radio and online media. It is safe to say that JCI Philippines made a real and lasting influence towards a better and brighter future for the country.
