2020 AREA 1 CONFERENCE Written by: JCI Mem. John Carlo T. Lim 2020 Area Vice President

I

ndeed, 2020 has been a roller coaster

ride for everyone. And just like any good ride, we saved the best for last — the Area 1 40th Area Conference! It is the f irst virtual Area Conference which was held last November 21 and 28, 2020. Yes, it is different f rom the traditional conferences held in the past, but the 2-day event was f illed with fun, learnings, and surprisingly; tears of joy, appreciation, and gratitude. The conference was hosted by one of the best LOs in our Area, JCI Tarlac City, which was headed by Pres Jay Yango and Areacon Director IPP RV Vega.

8

CONFERENCES

It was truly an experience. I was excited and nervous about how everything will turn out. I was hoping for the event to be successful because I knew how hard each and every one had worked to put it all together amidst the situation and the long nights spent by our ASec Raffy, the brilliant ideas of our AVPs (Louis, John, Orange, and Yvette), the eff iciency of AAC Kate, and the participation of the Hiraya Presidents. They truly deserve it to be a success. As an AVP, I couldn’t wish for more. My fellow members and board off icers were present, showing support for our Area, and cheering for one another. The year 2020 may have been a time of many f irsts. It was a perfect time to show how our presidents and members have risen up to the challenge; and have grown by leaps and bounds, emerging to be better versions of themselves. As a JCI member, I am conf ident that we will always be active and will always act for a greater cause. The UNO Awards is a testimony that amidst the numerous calamities and pandemic, JCI members will always act to make our communities better. Our Areacon and UNO awards perfectly captured our JCI journey in 2020. It was f illed with stories of how the members and presidents love one another (during the ACM), of reasons to move on (during the trainings and forums), and most importantly, of how we move forward with no one left behind.

Thank you, Area 1, for being my Ohana! Ohana means family. Family means no one gets left behind -Lilo & Stitch

The

2020

batch of Hiraya Presidents, the Local

Organization

Presidents

of JCI Philippines, is undeniably the most resilient batch. Imagine starting the term with a typhoon, followed by an earthquake, a volcano eruption, a pandemic, and ending it with a super typhoon. In fact, the 2020 Metro Area Conference had to be postponed due to Typhoon Ulysses. The new dates are still deemed untimely for a conference to take place considering the severity of the damage left by the super typhoon. But as an adage in theater goes, the show must go on, and it was the very heart of what the area conference theme was about – “Aryá!”, a beautiful Filipino word which means “bulalas na tumutukoy na ipagpatuloy o ituloy ang isang aksiyon o hakbang; abante; o pagtuloy sa isang balakin.” For whatever the circumstances that JCI members were in, the best thing to do was to carry on, to move forward, and to continue.

Cramming what could have been a year’s worth of preparation into a couple of months, and utilizing the recent advances of virtual communication platforms, Facebook, Zoom and Streamyard; the concept for the eSOLAC was born. When It Rains It Pours – Customarily transpiring during the early part of the month of September, the annual SOLAC celebration was moved to the month of November so as to enable the production of the materials needed for the virtual week-long conference. However, already short of manpower and time, 2020 decided to stay true to its reputation and sent a slew of three typhoons

But due to the pandemic, we were suddenly faced with the challenge of how to conduct the Area Conference through an online platform.

Planning, preparation and sponsorships seemed to be a diff icult endeavor we had to take on. We greatly appreciate the generous support we have received f rom our Provincial Governor Esteban Evan Contreras, City Mayor Atty. MARK JOSEPH DAVID

THE MOST OUTSTANDING JCI NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF

NATIONAL PRESIDENT

JCI

Philippines’ Mark Joseph David was recognized as the Most Outstanding National President at the 2020 JCI World Congress which was held in Yokohama, Japan last November 03-07, 2020. The congress is the most important assembly of members of Junior Chamber International across the globe. As the world continues to grapple with the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. David was able to exemplify effective and compassionate leadership. He was able to raise 6.6 million pesos through support f rom partners and fundraisers for supplies to combat the spread of COVID-19. He also worked with the Department of Finance to pass the “Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises” bill which provides help and support to affected businesses brought on by the pandemic. The priority programs of JCI Philippines such as the National Program for Disaster and Relief, “Oplan Kaagapay” and National Program for Medical Missions, “Got Heart” have helped thousands of Filipinos affected by the pandemic and the Taal Volcano eruption in January of last year.

His 15 years in JCI have equipped him with the ability and qualif ication to lead the organization in this time of unprecedented crisis caused by COVID-19. His JCI journey has not only brought him achievements, but also moments of failure which have given him the strength and insight to pursue innovative ideas. This is incorporated in his theme for this year which is to “Mold and Motivate”. Mr. David has demonstrated that despite the challenges that our country is still facing, young leaders such as himself and organizations such as JCI Philippines are greatly capable of bringing positive change and substantial contributions to our society and future generations. Other awardees include: Most Outstanding Local President Karishma Ansaram of Mauritius, Most Outstanding New Member Peggy Teh Pei Yi of Malaysia and Most Outstanding Member Mikkel Kaffka Schwarz of Denmark.

JCI Sen. Mark Joseph David 2020 National President

Someone

once said “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success”. When I took my oath as the National President of JCI Philippines in October 2019, I had a whole year planned for JCI Philippines. Then 2020 came and as we all know, it was far f rom what we had imagined. First, we welcomed 2020 with the Taal Volcano eruption. Oplan Kaagapay was activated and JCI Philippines and our many local organizations were at the ground to provide immediate and much needed help. Then COVID-19 came in with a sucker punch and changed our lives as we knew it. Inductions, fellowships, and projects which make up a huge part of our JCI life were cancelled to prevent further spread of COVID-19. We switched to virtual meetings and projects. Oplan Kaagapay and Got Heart were activated and despite the limited movement

WORKING WITH PALAWAN EXPRESS & PALAWAN PAWNSHOP With Palawan Express and Palawan Pawnshop being led by Mr. Bobby Castro, a true blooded JCI member f rom JCI Puerto Princessa Oil, the partnership towards promoting quality education through our program YLEA or Youth Leadership Excellence Award remained strong on its third year and as we inspire and motivate the youth to be better leaders. In 2020, aside f rom distributing the award to students, JCI Philippines also maximized the sponsorship and supported the another national program which is Bags to School. Truly, Mr. Castro gives truth to the saying “Once a jaycee, always a jaycee”.

allowed, local organizations were able to deliver aid. Projects related to mental health during quarantine were also conducted by local organizations. In a nutshell, we did not allow the year that was to break us. Quite the opposite, we worked even harder to make our JCI creed, mission, and vision a reality. As we braced for the new normal and all the changes that came with it, the off icers, the secretariat and the members all did more than their part to ensure that the organization was able to cope with these changes, thrive, and come out stronger. However, what most people weren’t able to see are the partnerships made by JCI Philippines with other organizations who share the same beliefs, visions, goals and “whys”. Seeing the effect of the quarantine to our community made these organizations even more committed to partner with JCI Philippines to create positive change in our communities.

NATIONAL PRESIDENT WORKING WITH PLDT & SMART The Outstanding Young Men & Women is an award given to extraordinary men and women working towards creating a better future. PLDT & Smart worked hand in hand with the TOYM Foundation in ensuring that this award continues to contribute in building a stronger Philippines, a stronger nation. Led by Mr. Manuel Pangilinan, a TOYM Honoree himself, PLDT & Smart remained a strong partner for TOYM, allowing JCI Philippines to continue with the program’s mission and vision and ensuring its signif icance in today’s world.

WORKING WITH THE TOYM FOUNDATION With TOYM being an award of great signif icance, JCI Philippines and the TOYM Foundation continue to uphold the standards expected f rom an award of great esteem. In addition to ensuring the integrity of the award, TOYM Foundation, thru the leadership of Mr. Bienvenido Tantoco III, TOYM Chairman, and Mrs. Chaye Cabal-Revilla, TOYM President, both TOYM Honorees themselves, has pushed for support in helping f rontliners in their f ight against COVID-19. The program

now is stronger than ever through the active participation and leadership f rom both honorees in the Foundation. Helping JCI Philippines navigate through the new normal and ensuring that amidst the pandemic in 2020, TOYM would be a success and continue to share stories of extraordinary individuals and motivate, inspire and mold the future generation of this country.

27

THE PHILIPPINE LEADER

Oplan Kaagapay and Got Heart, individuals like Mr. KARLO NOGRALES and our very own Cong. ALFRED VARGAS who supported our program – the Youth and Leadership Excellence Award (YLEA), LAZADA which provided us an online platform where we can raise funds for our various programs. We also have ADVANTAGE led by our former National President and JCI Secretary General DENNIS CUNANAN that repeatedly supported our programs such as TOYM and Oplan Kaagapay and LARK, which organized a business growth and sustainability seminar for our members. These organizations and so many other partners of JCI Philippines have greatly contributed to the success of our various programs implemented in 2020.

Aside f rom these stories that helped JCI Philippines accomplish more amidst the new normal because of the pandemic, we have other partners such as a US Firm who partnered with JCI Philippines thru their CSR partner BENEVITY to help f ight the spread of COVID-19 thru our national programs –

In the words of Cong. Alf red Vargas for YLEA awardees, “all our resources are limited but you will f ind out that if we share what we have with each other, we will always have enough”. While I don’t want to sentimental, I truly believe this. When we were young we were taught the miracle in feeding the multitude when Jesus and his disciples were able to feed 5,000 people with only two loaves of bread

28

NATIONAL PRESIDENT

When we tap other chapters or organizations, the positive change we create has an exponential effect. The past year was a testament to this. If anything, the pandemic may have kept us physically apart but more united in our burning desire to make this world a little better each day than it was the day before. May this passion to lead and serve keep burning in us everyday. May this passion burn so bright that other organizations will see our us and join our f ight for positive change.

and f ive f ish. What we weren’t taught though, is that the miracle there was not simply that that the supply had miraculously been enough, but that other people, seeing the need of others and how others were sharing the limited resources, were also inspired to share what little they also had. Our f inancial and material resources will always be scarce considering the many challenges that we face everyday. What we don’t lack though, is human resources.

NATIONAL CONVENTION

THE ROAD TO

NATCON 2020 Written by:

JCI Sen. RJ Paguyo 2020 National Director

On

the 11th of December 2020, JCI celebrated its

72nd JCI Philippines National Convention. This annual event celebrates our local and national organization members, projects and achievements. However, what made this National Convention memorable were the circumstances that made the f irst ever “Hybrid” (online and physical event) event happen (or did not happen) and how the team behind it made it a success. The year 2020 was not very kind as back-to-back local and global disasters made it the worst year in recent memory. The global pandemic brought about by

the coronavirus or COVID-19 came down hard on the Philippines, overwhelming the healthcare industry and pulling the breaks on the economy. In order to halt the spread of the virus, the national government imposed strict quarantine measures that limited the movement of people. With people stuck at home, technology provided new ways of “getting together” and going to work. Online gatherings and meetings became the norm during most of the year under quarantine. And this is where the story of our National Convention begins.

UNLEASHING THE HERO IN OTHERS Written by: JCI Mem. Iza Antonio 2020 President, JCI Alabang

“HARD TIMES DON’T CREATE HEROES. IT IS DURING THE HARD TIMES WHEN THE “HERO” WITHIN US IS REVEALED” – BOB RILEY

Last September 2019, I was elected as the 16th president of JCI Alabang. Though I have never been a president of any group my entire life, I was truly excited to lead a chapter

Despite all the challenges, the chapter was still able to do 137 projects benef itting more than 65,000 benef iciaries this year. The most notable programs of JCI Alabang were

During the GMM, I told them that I wanted the theme,

“Unleash the Hero Within” this year, since I was a believer that all volunteers have heroic capabilities inside of them. I wanted JCI Alabang to be the vehicle where members would reach their full potential and be the heroes the world needs. But as the saying goes, “Be careful what you wish for”, as I did not intend that my term would be called to the challenge. 2020 was a chaotic year full of calamities, but such events that caused dismay and anxiety to many, lead to the emergence of heroism in others. Today’s unsung heroes are not the ones we see on TV and in comic books. They are ordinary people who do extraordinary things. People who go out of their way to help others and risk their lives for the benef it of many. This is what JCI Alabang strived to be this year.

I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the hardworking and dedicated 2020 Board of Directors and the members of JCI Alabang. In a world where everyone needed to be saved, you went out of your way to save others. Thank you for being the Heroes you were ought to be! It was an honor to have served with you this year.

“Service is the fee we pay for living in this community. My role is to lead the organization with different projects and activities that have an impact on the lives of others”

to deliver the needed services in the community. I stood by my position because of the trust of the members and past presidents. With their show of support, a leader can practice “Service above self.” I am always re-energized and would regain my composure when I personally see other people who need a little help. I am deeply touched by the wonderful souls of people who are willing to give even if they don’t have much. This shows the spirit of camaraderie built in a strong rock formation. JCI Baguio Sunflower is an organization that has the spirit of volunteerism. Truly, we can make amazing changes through helping hands between and among members. We can make a difference. We sprinkle seeds of love in the community out of ordinary things but in an extraordinary way. I believe that little things are great things when they reach the right persons in times of need. This marks my one year of Presidency. I will always f ight and protect JCI Baguio Sunflower. Thank you so much for your trust and support.

GUIDING THE CHAPTER TO CONQUER ITS 2020 Written by: JCI Mem. Ninna Castillo 2020 President, JCI Baras

It has been a long and challenging year for all of us. We may have come out f rom our term on a high, but it’s not without hard work and challenges that come with being an active citizen of our organization. All in a year, we had to learn to adapt to new norms, adjust our expectations, manage our emotions, and learn to lean on each other to get the best possible result out of the worst of circumstances. It was probably the most challenging year of my life but def initely one of the most fulf illing as well!

We

sustainable solutions, and taught to inspire and nurture young active citizens! We were able to do this not only for our love of JCI, but more so our drive to learn and aspire to be developing leaders of our organization. I’ve been a JCI member for 8 years and counting, and when I was searching for a call to action for my term, I wanted a call that would drive and inspire us together for greatness. What I did not know then was that the call to action that we would coin, “DESTINY” would be a term that not only propelled us to greater heights, but also clarif ied our essence as JCI Members! Everything that we have accomplished, we were able to accomplish together, and we were able to do it as a culmination of everything we have learned and experienced together as JCI Members!

All in a year’s work, we were able to conquer our #JCIBarasDestiny2020!

I can summarize everything that we have accomplished for

the intangibles one cannot qualify or quantify! All in a year’s work, I found more f riends than I deserved and will keep for life. We were able to teach ourselves and even our members, that no matter how passionate we are as JCI members, we should take care of ourselves f irst. We should make sure that we are always well enough, health-wise and emotional-wise, before we can set out to help others. All in a year’s work, on top of a pandemic and catastrophes, we learned that the JCI spirit is resilient and innovative. We learned, in more ways that we ever imagined, how to work together and how to do it without thinking of who is ahead and if we are winning or losing. This year, there was truly no race. It was the hardest, but most rewarding year to lead. It was truly a year to conquer our own DESTINY!

The almost invisible virus has paralyzed a world economy, has emptied our avenues and streets, has forced us not to shake hands and to keep distance f rom our f riends, has even closed our churches, and has forced us to stay at home. The pandemic has forced each one of us to look at our different behaviors in a way that we are not used to. We are compelled to move collectively for the good rather than to be individualistic. It was never an easy situation that came across our lives’ existence now, especially in our term as the 2020 LO President. But still we delivered.

Let us uphold the JCI Values as we tread towards achieving our ultimate goals, and envision to be the leading global network of young active citizens. As one JCI family, we move forward and together. Let us aim to grow and activate impactful motivators to make the remaining months our first full year in JCI a success because “Service to Humanity is Best Work of Life”

Perhaps because of the COVID-19 threat, it is worth grappling with the mystery of uncertainty. But in the midst of crisis, God is reminding us “the harder the effort we invest in our faith, the greater the blessing that is promised to us”. one year to lead. I was actually asking myself, what have I done during my term? Imagine, you have a vision, things you would like your organization to accomplish but the Taal Volcano erupted and then COVID-19 happened. As a change maker, I believe that I had a good foresight in seeing what lies ahead. We did what we had to do – to fulf ill our commitment in serving the people. Despite the negativity, JCI Batangas Balisong still considers 2020 as an impactful year. I can proudly say that our organization has been a visible f igure on and offline through our sustainable and impactful projects. The local organization also marked its 5th year which signaled rebirth, change and hope. As President, I made sure that the 10 point agenda of our organization is properly executed while strengthening our ties with local communities, local government units and other private organizations. As an NGO, JCI Batangas Balisong is ready to move forward and engage more youth to participate and be part of this community. It is about time that we provide more development opportunities so that we can empower more people aiming to create positive changes in the society.

The organization also vows to continue leading with honor. When you lead, you are ambitiously seeking to protect people in the long term. You have to cultivate these seeds and make sure that they will be harbingers of hope in the future. Your obligation doesn’t really end after your term, it is just the beginning. But the thing that I am most proud of is that I was able to discover future leaders. I am happy that through my motivation, I was able to bring out their inner leadership skills and unleash their capacity of being somebody. JCI Batangas Balisong encourages personal growth by meeting community needs and providing opportunities to lead. Nothing happens in a vacuum as human nature is composed of both the ego and openness. JCI Batangas Balisong will always be an avenue wherein we bring forward a change of mindset, where teamwork and sense of belongings is favored, and that service to humanity is the best work of life. It has been an honor serving you, JCI Batangas Balisong, f rom 2745 miles away here in Australia. May we continue to mold and motivate as we bring forward the message that peace is still possible. THE PHILIPPINE LEADER

I, AmBIDA Written by: JCI Mem. Claudette Ambida 2020 President, JCI Batangas Caballero

I

pictured a presidency with rainbows and

butterflies. A term I waited for so long with many plans in my mind but challenges piled up continuously. I started a year with the big news of the Taal Volcano eruption followed by the COVID-19 pandemic which led us to be coined as Pandemic Presidents, as typhoons came here and there. But I am a woman who believes that I should learn how to f ind the positives in every negative situation and perhaps keeping my circle intact is one positive thing which I can say led me to be more inspired in serving and leading. After all, this is why I am here. My term is not for myself, it’s for my members, and it’s for my community.

Up to this day, as my term nears its end, I cannot believe I was able to pull off not just a year, but this year’s term. 2020 brought out the best and worst in people, and I am no exception. My ability to lead was tested through and through. There were countless barriers faced as we served our purpose. But with my Chapter’s efforts, we were able to come up with more or less 82 projects, by God’s grace. When you lead a pack of strong willed and made individuals, there are no shortcuts. It is extremely challenging but more than that, their passion and perseverance will motivate and guide you to a direction that will serve the Organization’s Mission and Vision. My one year to lead will end but the memories that made me stronger will remain forever worth remembering. And the truth about JCI, every person is special. Every situation is different. But every year, is a chance to be a better citizen. Ending my term, I knew I had a good one.

ONE YEAR TO LEAD ONE YEAR TO GROW Written by: JCI Mem. Kevin B. Casiño 2020 LO President, JCI Catbalogan Balud

W

hen I joined JCI Catbalogan Balud in 2016, I

told myself that I don’t want to be the president. Why? I saw how it worked. Sadly, it was a struggle and the president had to face it, sometimes alone. Fast forward to 2020, I ended up being the president. But I’m telling you, no regrets. None at all. The struggle? Yes, it was there, but now I know there’s a lot more to being the president than just trials. Being the L.O. President for me was an honour, privilege and an achievement. An honour due to the respect you receive f rom the chapter and even f rom the community. It is overwhelming because of this, you know you are probably doing something right. It has been a privilege to be able to serve the community and lead an organization, since it is a chance not given to everyone. Lastly, it is an achievement. If ever someone would ask me what my greatest achievement in life is, I would def initely say being the President of JCI Catbalogan Balud. I

know not everyone would understand, but being the L.O. President gives you more than just an achievement, it gives you a sense of purpose. It gave me one year worth of memories that I would love to visit over and over again when I’m old. To the people I met on this journey, thank you very much. To Batch HIRAYA, I will forever be proud that I am one of you. Thank you for everything, please know that you have found not just a f riend, but a brother in me. To my JCI Catbalogan Balud family, thank you for being my strength, thank you for giving me the chance to be your 2020 president. To my family and f iancée, thank you for always believing and supporting me. To our Lord God, thank you. Thank you for giving me the opportunity of one year to lead and one year to grow. Kevin B. Anyone

It is because I believe that the

reason that we are here right now is because we have a purpose, and we are to enjoy the journey. Indeed, there are a lot of happy-based decisions I have made and leading JCI Bohol Limestone is one of them. I could vividly recall the joy of a 1-piece of apple given to me by an organization during my elementary years because that time I cannot afford to buy one. At a young age, I know how it feels to have none. I somehow wished that maybe someday, I could be a part of something big. 5 years ago, I looked up and realized that I am living inside of the exact thing that I once only

dreamt about and prayed for. And who would have thought that 2020 has become the big year for me – L.O Oplan Kaagapay activator and a pandemic president. It was an amazing roller coaster ride. With my 1 year to lead, things were not perfect. We had ups and downs, but through the hard work and setbacks, we survived and developed a strong sense of mental toughness that allowed us to persevere. Through these, we were able to accumulate a list of valuable experiences and those experiences have helped us immensely in our lives.

When I f irst started, I did not know much about how the organization functioned, and the only thing I had was passion. But thanks to my mentors- the past crop of leaders of JCI Philippines and JCI Bohol Limestone, 2020 National Board with NP Mark’s leadership, Area IV with AVP Maylene, Central Visayas with RVP Joe France, I was able to achieve the vision that I had in mind. Thank you to my Group Sinagtala and Batch Hiraya Family. I realize how much love there is. At one time I know nothing, but when I started this journey of selfdevelopment with my co-presidents, I suddenly realized that I could do a lot more. MARIA KATRINA VIRAY Written by: JCI Sen. Maria Katrina Viray 2020 President, JCI Catbalogan Balud

In hard times, the veracity of one’s leadership is tested the most. The aptitude to endure and to act decisively are measured especially in great circumstances. As a leader, these trying times reveal how far one can go and what he can do for others before himself. The year 2020 served as a great obstacle for everyone. It was a period of drastic change, setbacks, delays and even loss. I could say that being the 2020 Local Organization President of JCI Dagupan Bangus has been a great challenge for me. However, I believe in the unstoppable power of a heart that desires to help and lead, and this has been my driving force throughout my term as President; having the goal to do more, help more, and to heal as one.

I believe we can all relate to having a lot of cancelled plans in the past year. I have envisioned a lot for my term that I did not get to execute due to this global crisis. However, I can still proudly say that 2020 has been a f ruitful and victorious year for JCI Dagupan Bangus and to everyone. The JCI Dagupan Bangus legacy of service and social responsibility carries on no matter what obstacle, and will continue to carry on for the many years to come. My presidency is a chapter of my life that I would always cherish. I am eternally grateful to serve and lead together with eff icient and active individuals f rom JCI Dagupan Bangus family who never cease to support and extend help. One year to lead would never be enough for me to inspire and to be of service to the people. I believe that this is a lifelong responsibility that I will always carry and pass on to generations having the same advocacy.

“I WAS NOT YET DONE UNTIL IT WAS DONE WITH A GAVEL, A BRONZE STANDARD OF EFFICIENCY, AND A 1 STAR IMPACT AWARD.”

The day I accepted the challenge to gather

membership for this chapter, there was a huge hesitation in my mind. Despite all my experiences in this organization, I still needed to believe in myself. After a year of struggles, ups and downs with all of you good people, our ladies in Dagupeñas, I have done more than expected. I am a proud member of this local organization, the JCI Dagupeñas Chapter, because of its members and their exceptional way of leadership! I salute you all! I was not yet done until it was done with a gavel, a Bronze Standard of Eff iciency, and a 1 Star Impact Award. I am now leaving my position and have passed it on to a person, who I know can do more and will continue what we have started.

I would like to quote one of our JCI values: “We believe that faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life”. This is the purpose which God has given meaning to me, when I decided to lay all my worries in my faith to him. The JCI value, “That the brotherhood of man, transcends the sovereignty of nations” is seen when we gather these ladies to become our members. We did not hesitate to adjust whatever differences we have, but we collide and work together for this success. Furthermore with, “And that service to humanity is the best work of life”; I have done my leading in this chapter for you, my dear members of Dagupeñas, but I am not yet done in supporting all your endeavors in this organization. Lastly, let me leave you with this caption, “A leader is not def ined by a position, it’s her service and dedication to mankind”. To my JCI Dagupenas, continue to “Lead. Serve. Inspire with Integrity!”

GOD SENT ANGELS

IN MY ONE YEAR TO LEAD Written by: Christopher M. Aquino President, JCI Daraga

Year 2020 has never been easy for us Hiraya

Presidents. I waited for this moment to arrive. It took me 8 years before I f inally said yes to

the presidency, but ended up my one year to lead with pain and f rustrations because of this pandemic that rocked our world. Back in March this year, I felt that my world fell apart and my dreams were shattered. Fitness taught me that when you are tired, take rest but never give up and remember why you started. When lockdown started, my anxiety kicked in at a very high level. I lost my enthusiasm and wanted to quit and tender my resignation. Everything changed when I attended the Midyear E-Academy and JCI Malaysia’s Sunduvan Midyear last June. Head Trainer Mennen Aracid and the rest of the training team sparked a light of clarity and hope in us. Personally, I was inspired to get up and pick up my battle armor again.

It’s been a long and winding journey but we f inally crossed the f inish line. The pandemic tore apart our plans and dreams in our one year to lead journey. But we picked up the pieces and walked back into the light, into the sunset of glory where our heart lies. My plans for this year never wholly came true but I still pushed with some of those, pushed with what we can still do. When I was at my lowest, I found not members, but f riends. I consider them my miracle. As we bid goodbye to our term, allow me to dedicate this article to them. I am grateful because they have faith in me when I lost it for myself. They got my back at all times, letting me see my strength and believing in my capacity. They never left me, never crossed my line, never went against me, and never stole a momentous moment that is meant for me. They allowed me to feel that I am the president, that they have sincerely worn my shoes, and felt deeply where I’m coming f rom. They have been faithful and loyal to me.

Taal, to this COVID-19 pandemic. Quarantine happened and we had to stay indoors. Only minimal movements were allowed, but that didn’t stop us f rom doing what we are supposed to do. We innovated, f rom physical meetings to online meetings. We did things virtually and ended up with positive results. It wasn’t as easy as people expected it to be. “Easy lang yan kasi puro virtual na ang lahat”. I beg to differ. It wasn’t. I doubted myself. Yet with the help of my batch Hiraya presidents and my board, I could

honestly say, I bounced back and got up on my feet and made everything work. I didn’t want to dwell on the things that aren’t relevant. Instead, I decided to choose what’s best especially for JCI Davaoeña Dabadaba. Hiraya is also a deeper form of the word hope in which, this year, we have been giving hope to those who are hopeless. Despite the pandemic, we made a difference. I am proud of what batch Hiraya has accomplished. If I could only hug each and every one, I would. We may have had cancelled plans or wasted ideas, but we are resilient. We gained more wisdom, we overcame. But most importantly, we gained f riendship. Never did I ever regret becoming a “Pandemic President”. Here’s to 2020 and here’s to overcoming inevitable circumstances.

HALIGUE ON MOVE 2020: MOLDING OPPORTUNITIES, VOLUNTEERISM ENGAGEMENTS Written by: JCI Imus Haligue

This COVID-19 pandemic changed the landscape

of everything in this f ragile world. During this

unprecedented time, I don’t think we should allow the rare opportunity to reach out and help our fellowmen. Because of this crisis, we encountered diff iculties that changed the routinary activities of our daily lives. On the other hand, we had a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to watch in real-time how the effects of social distancing can impact the lives of many. Each of us was in a bubble. In the months of March and April 2020, I stayed at home because of the nationwide community quarantine and lockdown protocols. During that time, a lot of uncertainties came to my mind staying at home means caring for yourself and for your family. To plan and execute a project during quarantine was something I thought of as diff icult and impossible. But thanks to our Past President Roy Tingco and Immediate Past President Paeng Alarcon and their unwavering dedication to serve and help our fellow Imuseños, we were able to conduct several Community Projects like Project SOPAS, “Distribution of healthy meal to a family”,

60

Distribution of relief goods and hygiene kits, and Project Distancia where we served as f rontliner volunteers during Sunday mass services in the Our Lady of the Pillar Cathedral Parish in Imus. We also conducted several online membership meetings, trainings, a webinar, and a lot more.

THE TRUE WEIGHT OF BRONZE: A TESTIMONY FROM A HIRAYA PRESIDENT Written by: JCI Lantawan Laya

I started my JCI journey in 2017 when the charter President of JCI Lantawan Laya, PP Jen San Pablo invited me to an OTI at a local secondary school. There I met high ranking dignitaries f rom JCI Metro Basilan. Back then, I was not fully aware what JCI is and how the whole process works. Though, I already saw posts f rom f riends regarding the organization. It was during that time that I discovered f rom one of the speakers, PNVP Jamju Rivera that JCI is formerly known as the “Jaycess” when we were in high school. It never crossed my mind that I will become an active member of this organization, since I was quite skeptical then. In 2017, I became the VP Collaborate of the chapter and subsequently became the LTD to Secretary the following year. Time moved swiftly and in 2019, I was elected as the Executive Vice President of JCI Lantawan Laya. I have joined several projects, met new faces and people f rom other chapters. I started to attend Regional and Area Conferences. From a mediocre start, we were trained to lead a local organization with the best potentials that we have. As I often hear, JCI is a training ground for future leaders. Here, we were trained how to manage and practice our leadership skills, to motivate our members and create an impact to our communities. As an advocate of positive change, we always aim to be better than our usual self. Helping one another through partnership and collaborations, and fostering the true spirit of brotherhood. I am a witness of how winning together works. As they say, “No man is an island” and in JCI we cannot stand alone. Hence, I always encourage others to participate in every activity that we have. This is for them to experience and love serving humanity. Although JCI is an organization composed of young active volunteers, we still push our

62

members to attend seminars as these are benef icial to their skills and personal development. As I looked deeper and engaged myself with more JCI events, I came across various people and experienced a lot in several plenaries I attended. I got the chance to be part of the National JCIP elections in 2018 and 2019. Never did I plan nor envision to become a President. Yet no matter how you wish to decline it, what is meant for you will surely f ind its way en route to you. So in 2020, I was elected as the 4th President of our chapter. I remember exactly how ambivalent I was to the scenario then. If my f riends noticed, I never posted the result of the election as I was considering many aspects before accepting the position to which I am elected such as my family, career, time and social life.Accepting the gavel and medallion is no joke as the responsibilities along with it are quite heavy. I remember the f irst reaction of my husband. He asked me casually “Hon, I saw the post earlier. You have been elected as the President of your LO”. I replied, “Yes”. So the conversation ended there. The next day while headed to town he asked again, “What have you eaten? Why did you accept the Presidency?” “You know we lack money these days right?” It passed through my ears like a tingling sensation that directly sent an impulse to my brain. I was speechless for a moment and replied, “You know me, whenever I enter into something, I always want to excel or if not, make a graceful exit.” Let me just do what I can and when my best isn’t enough, there are many good morning towel in the market!” So he gave up.

Upon hearing the result of our BOD Election, a lot of my JCI f riends congratulated me with their warm greetings. Some already gave their advice and these lines served as my guiding star, “Do not stress yourself. If your members don’t support you, it’s okay. It happens to most presidents. Remember that being a Jaycee is voluntary, there is no forcing. If they attend to a project, commend them and if they don’t, leave them and focus on the active ones. They know their responsibilities and once they are committed to their chapter, they will make a way in.” Another important instance that marked my whole Presidency was in the 2020 Natcon General Assembly. I was the chief delegate and I received our gavel and bronze seal of eff iciency plaque. As usual, my f riends took the moment to jokingly tease me that our bronze plaque is heavier than their silver, gold and platinum. I was surrounded by top presidents , so I was the underdog in the group. Yet one of the presidents seriously asked me, “Pres, if I may ask? What will be your goal?” Of course, it was premature to answer then as I was new to the circle. I didn’t know what to answer. That question did not end there. The same IPP constantly updating me and asking how it was going and what have I done as of the moment. At f irst I got pressured but in the long run, I got used to it as I updated him and his wife of our standing and so with my tf Nellie. These people were part of my journey and they made me accept this presidency well. Furthermore, I am thankful that I have batchmates who are great visionaries, our barangay Hiraya. These people were my adrenaline and I thank God that he put me in the right time and place of which I am grateful for. Our term was a roller coaster. At f irst attaining a 75% eff iciency rate and obtaining a gavel was hell, but now the Platinum plaque will soon be held by our calloused hands and a 3 Star Award was unexpected. Being the president during a pandemic was not easy. It was a journey through various seasons and phases. Some were incredibly joyful and victorious, while others were very dark and discouraging. But as a leader, I needed to have FAITH. I believed God was in control and I trusted HIM that he would keep his promises to me. Indeed, God never left me nor has he forsaken me. He used people to be instruments to help me on my leadership journey and I am grateful because, despite the challenges and circumstances, our chapter managed to hit the mark. Kagayhaan Gold’s goals for this year were met. The LO was able to conduct 2 major business/ fundraising projects and was able to raise a total of Php181,050.00. The said amount raised was used for the various community projects and programs implemented by the LO with Php77,902.00 left as

income, way ahead of our target which is to earn Php5,000.00 and leave Php10,000.00 for the next administration. Membership growth (20%) was achieved. However, during the JCI Philippines 40th Mindanao Area Convention Agung Awards, we were able to receive more than what we wished for. THE PHILIPPINE LEADER

FROM THE PREXY Written by: JCI Mem. Mialin Rose L. Ferrer 2020 JCI Lingayen Bagoong President

“A Catastrophic Year!”

is what most of us described the year 2020. But

behind these words lie a memorable journey. This year I became the Local Organization President of JCI Lingayen Bagoong on its 40th year. Life has knocked me down a hundred times. I have been through many hardships and lost my way that it came to a point that I tried to kill myself. I suffered f rom depressions that I don’t see my life’s worth anymore. But like a damsel in distress, someone held and saved me, and I am thankful to them—God, my family, and my husband. So this time, I reset my life. I regained myself and became more aware of the many blessings I have and keep on receiving. It is this time that I also want to be back on the path and to continue pursuing my studies, while making a career and creating a family. As life goes on, there is this feeling that there is something missing. A realization that I need to do something— to serve my purpose. And f rom that point, my JCI journey began. I became more involved and in love with what we do in JCILB. I’ve been active for almost 3 years until two of our Past Presidents approached me and told me to be the next president. I was in shock that I immediately

refused at f irst saying, “I wasn’t ready. Don’t get me wrong. I love JCILB, but maybe I really wasn’t ready for a big role.” But they told me, “Nobody is ready, as long as your commitment is there, and we are always here to support you, you can do it!”. And there we go, I became the LO President in a blink of an eye. Being the President is challenging, yet very fulf illing. To give back everything to the community even through simplest projects to more complex ones, the smiles of those we helped are priceless. It’s true when other presidents said that there will be times you’ll cry during your term and I did. As one of our PP said, “Your presidency is not worth it if it’s not a tough ride.” Well, I can attest to its trueness. Being the president doesn’t mean you always have to be good and perfect. But here in JCI, we become the president to learn more how to be it. JCI has been the best training ground for leaders. I may not be the perfect president that JCI Lingayen Bagoong had, but I KNOW I AM IN THE PERFECT LOCAL ORGANIZATION that trained me to lead and discover myself. I love you, my JCI Lingayen Bagoong, Serving with Passion and Leading with Purpose.

ONE YEAR TO LEAD: A CHALLENGE FACING THE PANDEMIC Written by: JCI Mandaluyong, Inc.

As I started my journey as the 2020 President Elect

of JCI Mandaluyong, Inc. after a week of our Metro Areacon 2019, I can already see a bright future for our Local Organization. I was then equipped with my one-year program and projects for my term as I entered the doors of the Presidents’ Academy in Cam Sur. Though I have already known my coPresidents f rom the Metro Area, there are still more Presidents to meet for myself. I can hear other presidents f rom different areas and I can understand their dialects, but it was still hard for me to chime in. My conf idence was not in full until I was grouped with Team Magnates where I felt like I belonged and made my Presidents’ Academy and Natcon experience really memorable. As I returned to my own local organization, I was full of hope. We started our strategic planning, scheduled our OTI, and activated our very f irst project, “Tulong Mandaluyong: For the Fire Victims of Addition Hills.” I continued to attend inductions even out of town through land and plane, and participated actively in area and regional trainings until the pandemic came. I was out of work; no work, no pay. I was experiencing anxiety and depression unconsciously. I had no means of income or fundraising to sustain the chapter. I was in despair until collaboration projects f rom our area and sister chapters were activated. But still, it was not enough. There were not enough funds and I was on the verge of submitting my resignation as LO President. I was discreet enough with my decision but new calls and messages came in f rom my Batch Hiraya Presidents, who were coming in to check on me and console me. After several

I have to be KIND and have COURAGE for I cannot let all the hardships to end just like that. I continued to mold and motivate others in collaboration trainings, projects and our Metro Area Launch for “Beyond Prison Walls”. I did not stop there, I proceeded and claimed what I deserve; a prestige to my local organization with the help of my co-presidents, who never gave up on me and trusted my abilities as a LEADER to MOLD AND MOTIVATE the people around us. SHINE THROUGH Written by: JCI Mem. Lalissa Singson JCI Quezon City Luna

We

are all aware of how 2020 has been the

greatest plot twist of the century. I cannot f ind the right words to describe my year, but the most certain thing that I could think of is it has molded me to be both gentle and vigilant. When I was elected as the second president of JCI Quezon City Luna, I promised myself to create leaders f rom this newbie chapter in one of the most competitive regions in the Philippines. Looking at how we have started building Luna in 2018, our mission has been about advocacy-based communities that serve various concerns. Apart f rom creating meaningful projects, one of my ultimate goals was to create leaders who are equipped, inspired, and enlightened. Hence, I am proud that hailing f rom the 2020 roster of JCI Quezon City Luna are two Area Chairpersons, a Regional Coordinator for a national youth event, and a concurrent Regional Executive Director. They are qualif ied in their own right and I am just really happy to share that our chapter has been an instrument to enable these added credentials. The committees that we built, the project chairs who initiate a lot of our programs, and the entire membership of our budding organization inspire me to keep going, despite how challenging 2020 has been. Maybe it is true that when you serve, you are tested; and also when you serve, you are also blessed a hundredfold.

72

I will not forget this year. I paused the operation of my travel agency because of the pandemic, but I also grew several industries under my consulting group. I am also reunited with my family after years of “ultra independence”. There are more challenges that I cannot reveal publicly but those have certainly tested my courage to keep hoping after each downfall. There are so many things that changed its course because of how this global situation unfolded. I would like to believe that every day we are one day closer to a better world. As of now, it is time to turn over the leadership to someone who will take charge on this very important mission. It will not be an easy journey but it will def initely be one of the best experiences life can give. I am grateful to the support of real f riends and family. I am thankful to those who believe in me, those whose love transcend my flaws, and those who believe in my vision. A very special thanks to the people behind JCI Quezon City Luna who said yes to build, grow, and lead with us. To our charter president and the board of directors, thank you for believing in me. Special thanks to Batch Hiraya for the everyday laughter. You make each day extra bearable. One year to lead; to cherish in my entire lifetime. JCI, I cannot thank you enough.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY Written by: JCI Mem. Patricia Rose Cano Dimalanta JCI Quezon City Sampaguita

The year 2020 was the year that we were all

expecting to be THE ONE. I wanted 2020 to be JCI Quezon City Sampaguita’s year!

It turned

out to be my TOTGA or “The One (Year to Lead) That Got Away”. But 2020 broke my heart. At f irst, we were in denial that our plans won’t push through. Eventually, we had to adjust and adapt to the “new normal”. Take for example our flagship project, Femme Phenomenon. We had grand plans for a day of women empowerment activities, but we were still able to push through with successful online webinars. From there, we conducted several more online activities and training. We became known as the COVID and Virtual Presidents. This may have a negative connotation, but we proved

of papers to the Off ice of the Vice President and Rosa L. Susano Elementary School as part of Metro Area’s Bags to School, and donated provisions and volunteered to pack some items to give to the survivors of Typhoons Rolly and Ulysses. Before my presidency came to a close, our LO joined the f irst ever Joint Induction and Turnover Ceremonies, which was a bittersweet ending to the year. Yes, 2020 was challenging. But looking back, it wasn’t the one year to lead that got away. Instead, we can proudly say that 2020 was the year of new visions, bright beginnings, and hopeful tomorrows.

that necessity is the mother of innovation. Then little by little, we became braver. The JCI spirit to serve humanity cannot be stopped by the virus. We started joining physical projects towards the end of the year. We were able to give away masks and shields to the Riverways Cleanup Operations Group, donated reams

A

great adventure is out in the open seas, it is

never in the safe harbor. JCI Regatta sailed through in one of its exciting and memorable chapters as an organization in 2020. I had the pleasure to serve as its Captain as we drift away and sail into new beginnings. JCI Regatta chartered its course based on the action plan of “MaKING waves of POSITIVE IMPACT”. The f irst objective is “making KINGs” which reinforces the MOLD and MOTIVATE theme of JCI Philippines. Essential to a successful voyage is to scout, train and hone JCI Regatta sailors. Our chapter grew to 35 members with 10 newly inducted members. Our growth and development program, the SHARE IT series, discovered, trained and showcased the skills of our Regatta members. We conducted or participated in at least 25 training sessions with 15 activated trainers. To inspire the newer members, we honored 4 exemplary members with JCI Senatorships. The second objective is to make waves of positive impact which calls for progressive improvement in one’s self, the community and organization. We faced adversity in the times of pandemic but we adjusted our sails to make small or big contributions to our community. It was an opportunity for us to be of service in whatever capacity. We completed 29 projects and we navigated our way to achieve 100% eff iciency in

74

the JCIPEA and were awarded the Platinum Seal of Eff iciency with 2 Impact Stars. A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor. The year 2020 tested our organization as we faced one of the roughest storms. It was clearly not a smooth sail riding through the waves of the pandemic. What helped us make it through is our faith in each one’s capacity and being an anchor of strength for each other. We leaned on and learned f rom each other. The captain is only as good as its crew. We could have not reached our destination without all your support, JCI Regatta family. My immense gratitude and thanks to each and every one of you. It’s now time to take a new voyage and adventure. Sail on my JCI Regatta... and continue maKING waves of POSITIVE IMPACT!

We had our own obstacles to deal with, but we thought of ways on how to show more empathy, compassion and kindness towards our members as well as to the community. We therefore had to take charge and become better leaders who are ready to serve our community despite the hurdles that come our way. CHALLENGE, COMMITMENT AND CONTROL. These 3 C’s describe my “One Year to Lead”. It has been an honor to be with hard working, service-driven and resilient Batch Hiraya Presidents. As we end our journey, may we continue to create a more inclusive and loving chapter where every member feels they matter and belong. May we build positivity and resiliency around us. And most of all, may we encourage others to be passionate in putting to action our JCI core values.

A JCI EDUCATION: ONE YEAR TO LEAD, ONE YEAR TO LEARN Written by: JCI Mem. Mico Espina 2020 President, JCI Taytay

Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Ours was not a forgiving year. Earthquakes, f ires, floods, typhoons, volcano eruptions, and a global pandemic. And as if a JCI presidency wasn’t challenging enough, I was already juggling work with my master’s studies. If it’s true what they say about JCI, that we are here to train youth leaders, then a presidency is its ultimate education. And maybe the most important lesson I’ve learned f rom this demanding year is to not forget your Why. I joined JCI because I believe that a group of young, active citizens can change the world. As a new member, I had a casual relationship with JCI activities. But when I was elected president, that relationship turned into a marriage. Eventually, I got caught up in administrative duties, politics, protocol, and a rush for JCIPEA points. I admit, it became a little toxic.

It took time and help f rom my batchmates and past presidents. I have learned to always ask myself the big questions. Why am I doing this? Is this for my community and organization or for myself? I have learned sacrif ice, compromise and purpose. I have learned things a college degree could never impart. I have learned to be a leader. I’m still not perfect but I am better. And that’s all any of us in JCI want: to Be Better. It is because of this “education” I will be leaving my presidency wiser, a full heart, and with a proud legacy of membership growth, a year full of projects and partnerships, our f irst Platinum Seal of Eff iciency, an Impact Award, seats in the Area and National Boards, the f riendships made, and the community service given. Thank you, JCI, our honored organization, for this opportunity to learn. Indeed, heavy is the head that wears the crown. But stronger am I for it.

THE PASSION OF A LEADER, THE SERVICE OF A TRUE WORKER Written by: JCI Tacloban Love Inc.

Giving is a gift beyond measure, a true test of character and a simple manifestation of hope. We are in this time of endless chaos and predicament, but we also live in a time of endless giving. This is what our dear president, Rex B. Palompon, truly exemplif ies—the power of giving. He gives his time, treasure and talent to be part of something bigger than his own advocacy. He gives himself in the service of others, putting smiles on others’ faces, and giving joy in whatever little way he can. As candid and funny as he can be, our president knows how to serve with joy and how to give with love. In the past months into this pandemic, numerous activities were initiated by our servant leader. Shedding more light in the darkest of places and giving as much as JCI Tacloban Love Inc. can. These illuminating activities involved environmental advocacies such as the Tacloban Clean Up Drive and Think Green Tree Planting. It also included humanitarian advocacies of Pandemic Response dubbed as “JCI Tacloban: Love in the time of COVID-19”, Christmas treats for kids and street dwellers, gift giving to various drivers, and bloodletting. Education being the means of every endeavor served as a top priority as JCI Tacloban Love Inc. also participated in the Brigada Eskwela donating bond papers, printers, computer ink, bags, and school supplies to partner communities. As we sally forth into this battle against COVID-19, the most relevant initiative included the donations of face shields,

alcohol, surgical gloves, food packs, PPE suits and other protective equipment, and relief packs for porters, pedicab drivers,

employees of LTFRB. The president also spearheaded a donation drive for the Tacloban City Jail called, “Beyond Prison Wall” in partnership with STCDCFI, a private basic education institution. Moreover, Oplan Kaagapay highlights the disaster response of JCI keeping up with the signs of the times in reverberating hope among those afflicted by the back-to-back Typhoons Rolly, Siony, and Ulysses. All these are successful events that have become a symbol of hope and an emblem of generosity. All donors, all participants, all workers and servant leaders made it a point to gather all human and material resources to bring about the true essence of giving and helping in the community. Efforts have been poured and unity has been achieved through the vision of our Pres. Rex. He has shown how passionate leadership can pave the way of true service for others—to be a man for all men, a man for others by the grace of God. We continue this f ight for peace, justice and hope knowing that people like PRex are leading the way to have a better society. Driven with a heart of a true visionary, a resourceful worker and a servant leader.

THE PHILIPPINE LEADER

PAY IT FORWARD Written by: Rhoda M. De Ocampo 2020 President, JCI Ortigas

My mission was crystal clear - cultivate a pay-it-forward culture within the organization and inspire people to do more, be more and give more.

2

020 had been unexpectedly extraordinary. It was a year in history when a pandemic struck the world and forced us to change our norms. Here we are now, still in the new normal - trying to push on, while we look out and take care of each other’s health for the sake of those we love. To each of you watching today, I wish us all good health a kinder, brighter 2021.

We kicked off early in 2019 f rom BOD Strat Planning in September and rolled out our f irst project days after NatCon in October 2019. I remember bringing my bouncing 2 year old toddler to the National Conference at CamSur because he just didn’t want to be away f rom mommy. Thanks to our trusted nanny, I was able to multi-task between mommy and presidential duties. We were faced with natural disasters as early as October earthquakes, f ire - name it, we had it! For us that time, it could just be one of the usual disasters that we’ll quickly recover f rom, just like any year. I fondly remember holding our grand recruitment night in November with 30 attendees - for a Category 2 chapter like us, 30 is already a big number for one night. I look back with gratefulness to our past presidents who graced our face to face GMMs since October 2019 through February 2021. It was a delight for the new generation of members to see. To our private and public partners who enabled us to make our trainings and commdev projects rolling consistently month on month - we keep going because of people who trust us, and the members who continue to show up.

Becoming the 17th JCI Ortigas LO President was not a path I did not plan or expect. I joined JCI because I wanted to give back in some way. In 2017, PP Raymond Lising’s thrust of responsible leadership struck a chord in me. JCI Ortigas was well known for fellowship projects but we also mean serious business. As I immersed further I’ve felt that palpable energy within the chapter that aspires to getting better every single year. I felt this even more strongly through PP Tersh Tupas who tapped me to be part of her BOD in 2019 and eventually opened the more weighty challenge of taking the chapter’s leadership after her (such big shoes to f ill!) So there I was, a JCI newbie taking on that next big challenge. What pushed me to go against my original plan to just be a happy member supposedly after PP Tersh’s term was done? It’s that call to continue what the leaders before me has worked hard to built beautifully. When I decided to take the leadership role as LO president, I was certain that it’s not going to be an easy ride. There will be uncertainties along the way. I was ready to embrace the unknown because I was sure I wanted to be an agent of change for our dear chapter.

82

I would say the momentum was on a high, I was 4 months into my term - until I was caught off guard by a personal tragedy. We discovered my dad was sick, and I was conf ronted with scary thought : Life is short, how do we want to spend it with our loved ones? Unknown to most of you, this uncertainty shook me to the point of letting go. Because time was against me. I spent days in the hospital because we knew our dad needed us everyday and it matters like a lifetime. From hospital trips to coming home to my toddler at night, so I could

HIRAYA nurse him to sleep - he would literally just wait for me to come home, every single night, no matter what time I arrived. I took a space of rest and quietude to calm my mind who was scared that the end was near. I thought about resigning, but when I remembered my WHY - why I decided to take on the presidency, I knew I would still not have the heart to let go.

themselves. I wanted to be a vessel of hope for others and inspire more people to take a step forward and make a choice to be active instead of just being a bystander. And when things go harder, I just go back to my why and my mission why I chose to do this in the f irst place. 2. Strive for growth not perfection. Every term is different , and so are the circumstance of every person in the chapter. Small improvements take you to the higher road. Enjoy the journey of the present. The changes today will be the building blocks of a better tomorrow. 3. Nurture love and connections in your heart. Whatever cause you decide to f ight for, make sure to keep love in your heart - for your family, for what you do and the people you meet along the way. I have been honored to meet a wealth of good hearted people, new f riends within the JCI community. To my Hiraya batchmates, advocacy partners, and new f riends, I am grateful for the new f riendships. I wish we can catch up on lost time when this is all over.

To my 2020 team of directors, you are the main reason why I chose not to let go. Thank you for being with me in my darkest days. Thank you for allowing me to lead you. I look forward to see the day that each of you will become bigger champions of positive change in what ever f ield you choose to pursue, and also here in JCI. January was hard because my father was sick. It wasn’t easy to plan and make decisions at the height of a personal and natural disaster. But we kept going, together. My dad was released f rom conf inement and he stayed with me in our home while he recuperated, - I knew I wanted my kids and myself to spend more time with him. I even borrowed him f rom my mom. I thought things will be all well there after. I was proud to say we were also very supportive of Regional and Area Projects. We had the strongest chapter delegations for National Training Month. Back in March I was interviewed for a radio show and I was talking about women empowerment and JCI what it stands for and why it’s worth your time. I saw my dad after, that same day and we had family lunch near the hospital where he had a follow up visit. It was a happy day. 3 days after, he died of a heart attack. To my batch mates who also lost a father like me, I mourn with you. Let’s keep all the good memories of our loved ones alive. Just after I lost my dad, the lockdown happened. We all have stories of how we rose up to the situation. Because of JCI we were able to become vessels of hope. Through team effort, and thanks to our donors, we donated 33,000 PPEs to f rontliners at the height of the pandemic. Things will not always go the way we want it. But the tragedy and uncertainty of 2020 all molded us Hiraya presidents to muster extra resilience and political will to make decisions. I had f rustrations along the way but we just make the best of what can be done given limitations. When things were not exactly as we hope for, I just always remind myself to lead with the heartand the mind. And everything will be okay. To my Hiraya Batchmates, congratulations for our one year to lead. Tough is def initely an understatement.

Before I close, I pass this leadership role to the 2021 Board of Directors. I am sure 2021 will be a better year with our set of high potential leaders. Keep the love for our chapter alive. Continue striving for excellence. Lead with the head and the heart. I close my presidency with my tanks full - there is fulf illment f rom JCI that no money can buy. It’s that fulf illment knowing we’ve helped others when help was badly needed. From millions worth of of donations done during the course of the pandemic last year, to smaller things unpublished but etched permanently in my heart… like raising future leaders, partnering with excellent advocates for mental health, environment conservation, women empowerment or disaster risk preparedness… or that small act of kindness for a f rontliner without a PPE to use at the height of the pandemic, reaching off-coast community of students in Romblon with no access to water or giving hope to those who are stuck below poverty level. All these I lose my words for, but it is because of JCI that my heart expanded so much bigger because I know being an agent of positive change is something I would like to do even quietly, or past my JCI age (which is 2 years f rom now). It’s been a great honor to serve and lead. Congratulations to all of us who decided to amplify the voice of the youth to do more for others. Positive change doesn’t have to be expensive. It’s just always done with decisiveness to change something for the better one person, one project at a time. Be bold. Be brave. Be the light.

I’d like to share 3 lessons I learned that enabled me to hurdle through the challenges of the presidency. 1. Be clear with your mission. My mission was clear at the very start. I wanted to cultivate a pay-it-forward culturewhich was the very essence why I joined JCI in the f irst place. I wanted to empower others to believe more in

With the continued arising and emerging of new potential and future leaders within the chapter, it is no wonder we could reach even greater heights in years to come. Last 2019, our call to action was “Synergy, Working Together”. After a year of regrouping, recruiting and reuniting our members, not just by heart but by our passion to serve, we ended our year f ruitfully. The transformation and the turning over of leadership and responsibilities for all chapters were never easy, and so does ours. It took us few tiring months to do it but eventually, because of our strongly built relationship inside our organization, we made it once more.

86

This 2020, we are facing a lot of challenges, starting with some natural catastrophes and now this so-called COVID-19 which has become another worldwide pandemic. Some may say we are limited, but if we work together, we believe we can always be limitless. Some changes in our plan of actions have to be made, but then again, it will never stop us in conquering our fears and fulf ill our purpose. This year we call ourselves, THE BUILDERS, because we are ready! Ready to build more relationships, build our beloved communities and BUILD LIVES!

JCI-ANTIPOLO’S BANGON RIZALEÑOS: RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITIES This year had its own shares of ups and downs

for everyone. Aside f rom the pandemic that we all faced, different natural calamities had devastated our land including Rizaleños’ with the recent Typhoon Ulysses. JCI Antipolo, together with other Metro Rizal local organizations headed by 2020 Regional Vice President Joven Bernados, joined forces to launch Oplan Kaagapay to hard-hit municipalities in the region. They have provided basic food packs, clean drinking water, clothes, milk, diapers, blankets and other necessities for the typhoon victims.

Oplan Kaagapay relief operations were held in different parts of Rizal—San Mateo, Rodriguez, Tanay and Baras, to check on our fellow kababayans and provide assistance during these tough times. Recovery and starting over might be diff icult and impossible. But during the relief operations, we heard stories of how Rizaleños showed resilience that whatever may come, they have the courage and faith to continue with their lives. Indeed, “lalawigan kang tanging-tangi, mahal namin magpakailanman.”

Rarely do we hear that Rizal is included on the list of typhoon related disasters. But since the news came out, we are overwhelmed with the help and support that came to our aid. Though the typhoon flooded most of their homes, donations f rom its neighboring cities and other JCI chapters also overflowed.

40TH KARAKOL NG IMUS:

JAYCEES STYLE THE NEW NORMAL Written by: JCI Imus Haligue

Karakol is a thanksgiving parade accompanied with various dance steps honoring the feast day of a certain patron saint, commonly observed all throughout the Province of Cavite. It’s a yearly devotion since it was f irst celebrated more than four hundred years ago. It was introduced by Dominican Friars to the locals of Cavite as the absolute medium of showcasing undying commitment towards their patron saints. During that time, the Philippines was still a colony of Spain. Considering particularly Cavite, and more specif ically Imus, was one of the main strongholds of

This caused the Jaycees of Imus Haligue to take the challenge of annually organizing the said event. In 1980, the f irst Grand Karakol ng Bayan Jaycees style was born. JCI Imus Haligue invited various civic organizations in and outside Cavite to experience and witness the festive tradition that Imuseños are known for. Thousands of people joined the procession to the point that main thoroughfares were f illed with people cheering and dancing to the tune of the Karakol played by marching and lyre bands.

CLASSROOM-ON-WHEELS FOR THE PUPILS Written by: JCI Mem. Jerico Cayl Samson 2020 JCI Lingayen Bagoong Executive VicePresident

The Philippines is now facing a big problem

WASH IN PANDEMIC Written by: JCI Quezon City Capitol

By the end of 2020, COVID-19 has infected around 75 million people in 218 countries all over the world including the Philippines. Our country has more than 460,000 in total cases where 55% are in the National Capital Region. As the pandemic spreads, millions of people are heeding the advice of health experts to wash their hands as one of the minimum public health protocols. But for about 21 million people in the Philippines who do not have access to a handwashing facility with clean water and soap, this small action to prevent infection remains to be a challenge and out of reach. This even includes about 20% of healthcare centers in the country where patients in the community receive immediate medical care. SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT

ONE STRAW AT A TIME Written by: JCI Surigao Nickel

Urgent times call for urgent solutions. Looking

around us, what we see are endless plastics littering our environment. People throw their

litter everywhere, what’s worse is that these do not degrade and will be polluting our environment for years and years to come. They will greatly affect our environment and the communities that depend and live in it. Plastics are also ingested by wildlife contributing to their death. These not only affect the flora and fauna around us, but our communities as well. These micro plastics may also enter our bodies when we ingest food f rom animals who have ingested plastics. This is a web of danger and destruction which must be halted and solved. Our actions, be small or great, create impact. What matters is that our actions make an impact to ourselves, our community, and the world. The impact that creates ripples and waves is what matters the

98

most, making everyone aware of the problems and solutions that can address them. It all starts with us. Making a difference, a stride, crosses the mind as we live our daily lives. To combat plastic pollution, JCI Surigao Nickel headed by its 2020 Local Organization President Henry Ace M. Kang thought of an innovative alternative. When the stars aligned, the fated meeting had to happen between Pres. Ace and the Rice Straws. Seeing the opportunity to create a lasting and meaningful impact that leads to positive change for the individual, the community, and the nation as a whole – STRAWnger We RICE – was born. Acknowledging the impact this has for all, as one JCI Philippines family, collaboration and connection with other chapters were inevitable to make a wider impact for everyone.

JCI PHILIPPINES’ UNSDG: YOUTH: OUR HOPE FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Written by: Raida Galang 2020 Area 4 Chairman for UN SDG

Every nation knows the youth is its backbone.

Harnessing our youth’s energy, cultivating their talents, and expanding their knowledge for the common good could take us one step closer to a better future we all desire for our planet. We recognize that we are Earth’s most valuable resource and, ironically, also the greatest source of destruction. However, as we build awareness and action on the SDGs with the younger generations, we also increase the chances of transforming our future. Embarking on the exciting journey towards a better future through the SDGs requires a collective effort f rom all social sectors. With shy of 10 years to go before the conclusion of the 2030 UNSDG agenda, we bank on our youth to accelerate action on fulf illing the Sustainable Development Goals. Since the SDG’s adoption in 2015, leaders f rom JCI Philippines have continued to be pro-active in transforming this promise into practice by implementing sustainable projects and development activities. Alongside JCI Philippines, the 2020 UNSDG team, led by 2020 JCI Philippines’ UNSDG National Director Marianne

100

Sigue, engaged our youth by building meaningful partnerships with youth organizations such as: Youth Advocates for the Philippines, AIESEC in the Philippines, National Youth Volunteers Coalition, and ASEAN Youth Engagement Summit. Through these partnerships, JCI Philippines was able to promote the SDGs and youth action online while building a network of promising young leaders. Through the series of online initiatives by the UNSDG team in 2020, the exchange of innovative ideas and plans for sustainability to achieve the Global Goals with the youth f rom different parts of the globe was made possible. The UNSDG promises to “Leave No One Behind” by fulf illing a vision of a sustainable future for all. It is our responsibility to promote and achieve these goals as active citizens. With the global challenges and pressing issues looming today, we also witness our youth’s increasing drive to carry on with our responsibility as leaders of humanity, and to pave the way for responsible generations to come. Towards a better and more sustainable future for all.

“As an AC for the UNSDG, despite the limitations brought about by the pandemic, the team under the leadership of ND Marianne, we were still able to pull off several activities involving almost all JCI Chapters in the country. Each event that was held inspired leadership and enabled collaboration in very unprecedented times. The passion and the grit of the team helped the chapter leaders to come up with innovative projects keeping in mind its long-term effects. After all, the new normal demands new approaches and new solutions that the UNSDG team was rather successful in cocreating even in the many virtual discussions.” Kevin Martin dela Cruz - AC for UNSDG, Area 2 “As the 2020 UNSDG AC for A4, I witnessed the great potential of creating positive impact through virtual events. It was only in 2020 that I was able to appreciate the value of online learning and networking. I will always be grateful to have worked alongside ND Yan, who was undoubtedly one of the most versatile members of JCIP. She is a sincere advocate of the SDGs, so we AC’s were always pleased to support her plans and endeavors. We all had to adjust quickly and assimilate the new normal way of fulfilling our duties of promoting the Goals. It was an exciting year with backto-back events, which turned out even greater than I expected. We were able to reach out to the youth from all regions of the Philippines and even globally! Pulling every string to manifest the SDG promise to “Leave No One Behind” was a one-of-a-kind experience I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.” Raida Galang - AC for UNSDG, Area 4 “As the 2020 Area Chairperson for UNSDG representing Area 5, I never felt so lucky working with such a dynamic team headed by the most creative and enthusiastic National Director Marianne Sigue. I don’t have enough knowledge about the SDGs, but as I worked with the team, I started learning and appreciating the importance of sustainability on all things. The experience was awesome having talked with different JCI and non-JCI members from Area 5 and Mindanao with one goal and that is to promote the 17 SDGs. Seeing a lot of young people striving hard to make a positive impact in the society through SDGs amidst the height of CoVID-19 pandemic was so fulfilling. TOYM 2020

CAPS OFF THE CELEBRATION THROUGH AN INTIMATE AWARDS NIGHT

Written by: JCI Sen. Florica Aira Talah Pimentel 2020 National Chairperson, TOYM Search

The year-long search for The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of 2020 concluded through an intimate awards night at the Grand Hyatt Manila last February 18, 2021. Spearheaded by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippines, the awards night conferred the trophies and medals to the seven (7) f inest young men and women of the country for 2020. The recipients are David Almirol Jr. (Science Technology and Engineering); Edgar Elago (Community Development/Education); George Royeca (Business Entrepreneurship in Pioneering Industries); Lesley Jeanne Cordero (Political and Social Sciences); Raymond Francis Sarmiento (Medicine); Capt. Ron Jr. Villarosa (Community Development/Military Service); and Pasig Mayor Victor Ma. Regis Sotto (Government Service). The TOYM is a flagship project of JCI Philippines that aims to recognize the invaluable contributions of Filipinos under 40 who have made tangible impacts to society. Due to the pandemic, the organizers of TOYM were compelled to explore the digital platforms in conducting the nationwide search for prospect honorees. “With the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we have been conf ronted with challenges on how to conduct the search for TOYM given that strict lockdown was imposed across the country. But with the help of our team and all our partners, we managed to pivot to digital platforms and carry on with the search,” Florica Aira Talah Pimentel, TOYM 2020 National Chairperson mentioned during her opening message. As the f irst-ever TOYM search that was undertaken entirely through online platforms, this national event is

groundbreaking for surpassing physical obstacles and transcending into the digital age. Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto as one of the awardees graced the occasion and delivered a heartfelt message to all the aspiring young leaders. “Despite feeling that we are moving an immovable object whenever introducing reforms in the government, I always take comfort in knowing that there are thousand more young leaders who are pushing change and working hard to see a better Philippines for the next generation,” he said. TOYM Foundation President Chaye Cabal-Revilla closed the program with a challenge to the 2020 awardees. “I hope and pray that you continue to do well and inspire us and many more to do the things beyond people can ever imagine. The country needs people like you and the world is hopeful because we have you who will make a difference,” she mentioned. Due to the restrictions on mass gatherings, the ceremony was attended only by selected individuals and partners who have made signif icant contributions to the success of TOYM. This includes the members of the Screening and Judging Board, TOYM Committee 2020, TOYM Class of 2020 Awardees, and JCI 2020 and 2021 Board Members. This year’s search is co-presented by Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., and Home Fibr and Smart Communications Foundation,
