JUNIOR CHAMBER INTERNATIONAL 2021 FACT SHEET About Junior Chamber International Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a global membership-based non-profit organization of young active citizens ages 18 to 40 who dedicated to creating positive change in their communities. Through projects in more than 5,000 communities across more than 100 countries, members seek targeted solutions to local problems, creating a global impact.

The JCI movement started on October 13, 1915 by one active citizen, Henry Giessenbier, who had a passion for positive change. Since then, millions of other young active citizens have united together to create sustainable impact in their community.

International Cooperation JCI is an international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with active participation in the United Nations (UN) system. In this context, JCI has relations with the Office of the UN Secretary General (Secretariat) and a Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). JCI has cooperation agreements with the UN Global Compact; the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); the UN Foundation; UN SDG Action Campaign; the Pan American Health Organization; the Conference of NonGovernmental Organizations (CONGO); the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC); AIESEC International; KIWANIS & etc.

International Events Each year, members from all over the globe come together at the JCI World Congress. At this event, JCI's critical mass of young people united to share experiences, understand the interconnectedness of our world and facilitate international cooperation. JCI also hosts four regional conferences each year : Africa and the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, the Americas and Europe. At these conferences, JCI conducts in affairs, hosts training, and gives members the opportunities to address global issues and show their commitment to become socially responsible leaders.

JCI RISE The JCI RISE (Rebuild, Invest, Sustain, Evolve) initiative is a platform for JCI members to share ideas, best practices and their unique efforts to sustain and rebuild economies around the world. JCI members have always prioritized understanding their communities to create sustainable solutions. When we partner with other organizations and sectors of society, we can re-imagine what the future could look like.

RISE will focus on 3 specific points:Investing time and resources to sustain and rebuild local economies.

Engaging and empowering the workforce through effective leadership and communication.

Acknowledging, understanding and creating solutions to the mental health impact COVID-19 has had on the global population.

About JCI Petaling Jaya JCI Petaling Jaya (JCI PJ), was initiated in year 1980 by JCI Senator DJ Lourdes (Past President of JCI Bukit Mertajam) and the late JCI Senator Patrick Wong (Past President of JCI Ipoh) and extended under JCI Kuala Lumpur. JCI PJ was officially registered under Registrar of Society on 21 April 1981 and installed its Charter President JCI Senator Felix Gong in September 1981. Currently, JCI PJ is registered under the Registrar of Youth and Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia and is affiliated to JCI Malaysia and Majlis Belia Selangor.

JCI PJ is an award winning local organization that is affiliated to JCI Malaysia, maintaining the 100% Efficiency Award since year 2009 till now. JCI PJ was won numerous awards at JCIM Annual National Convention, JCI ASPAC and JCI World Congress. It was also awarded the Most Outstanding Local Organization in Malaysia 7 years consecutively from year 2009-2015. In 2019, JCI PJ was the first NGO being awarded with Eco Office Certification under Eco Office Initiative Project (EIPO) by NetsECo. JCI PJ is now operating from its new headquarters in Damansara Perdana, where board meetings, training and members gathering are held monthly. JCI PJ is managed by its Boards if Directors, who is elected annually and contributes voluntarily. Members are given leadership opportunities, and practices "1 Year to Lead" concept.

JCI PJ conduct various events annually, including its signature projects such as International Children Drawing Contest (organized in collaboration with JCI Higashi Iruma, Japan) and Dragon Ambassador (organized in collaboration with JCI City, Hong Kong). Both of the project won international awards in 2019 JCI Asia Pacific Conference (ASPAC), Jeju and 2019 JCI World Congress, Estonia (Europe) respectively. JCI PJ also conducted many community projects such as JCI PJ FoodHero (collecting excess breads from bakeries and to channel to orphanage homes), Stand By Me (for fundraising to JCIPJ-UMMC Leukemia and Childhood Cancer Trust Fund) and many others.

JCI PJ is also experienced in organizing JCIM National Awards, having hosted the JCI Creative Young Entrepreneur Awards (JCI CYEA) since 2009-2016 on behalf of JCI Malaysia, and JCIM Sustainable Development Award in 2018. Through these award programs, JCI PJ has built strong relations with various ministries, youth organizations, NGOs and media in Malaysia.

Internationally, JCI PJ has 3 sisterhood pact with JCI Higashi Iruma (Japan), JCI Taoyuan (Taiwan) and JCI City (Hong Kong), as well as 1 brotherhood pact with JCI Tawau (Sabah). JCI PJ is also the Founding Member of Commonwealth Asia Alliance of Young Entrepreneurs (CAAYE - now rebranded to CAYE-Asia).

CAYE-Asia is a network of organizations focused on youth entrepreneurship development from 8 countries (Bangladesh, Brunei, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Pakistan) and 1 observer nation (Nepal). It was formed by the mandate given from the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and is now recognized as a best-practice network by the Commonwealth Secretariat. JCI PJ had the honor to co-host the 1st CAAYE Interim Summit in July 2012 at KL and hosted the 4th CAYE-Asia Young Entrepreneur Summit from 30 Oct - 1 Nov 2015 in Putrajaya.

MESSAGE FROM Bruce Ban 2021 JCIM NATIONAL EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

Thank you for your contributions to the community during the 3rd quarter, JCI members. There are a total of 20 local organizations participating in the area initiative - Together We Rice. Over RM120,000 in total funds has been raised and 1500 bags of food have been delivered to the needy in the area central south. We are sad to see that there are still many families who do not have income and have been desperately seeking assistance until now. When we host projects, we emphasize sustainability, sending food bags is not the ultimate solution to the problem we had in the community. However, many people around us have lost their faith since they have no income, live in a very challenging environment, and wouldn't be able to survive without your help. We are all humans with limited strength, but together, we can change the world. Thank you for helping those in need.

The year is coming to an end, which means your office term is coming to an end as well. Every officer's goal during their term is to leave a beautiful score sheet. However, the result might mean nothing to the other's after many years.

What are you planning to do to leave a good legacy to your organization that would lead it to an entirely new level?

For each position, JCI leads for only one year and there is no way you could have the same chance twice. Therefore, it might be a good time to review yourself and leave a good legacy for the successor who might take over your office position.

Coaching is another skill we practice at JCI; your best ideas might differ from your successor, so coaching them with skills might be more effective than telling them what to do.

In the society, there are many strong and active associations that train leaders as well.

JCI is not just a place where knowledge is transferred, but also where we take action and practice.

We might spend more time here at JCI because of the projects, meetings, training, conventions, and conferences. But as we go through these actions, we discover our shortcomings, whether it is lack of knowledge or lack of soft skills. To transform into a better version of yourself, you need to know your true self. That is why one must serve as a local board of directors and even as a national officer in JCI. Because the more we do, the more chances we have of getting to know ourselves better and improving.

MESSAGE FROM Oscar Tiu 2021 JCI PETALING JAYA LOCAL PRESIDENT

Dear JCI Petaling Jaya members, by the end of this year, my term as President of JCIPJ will come to an end. This is my last e-newsletter message and I would like to start it by sending my best wishes for a very prosperous and peaceful year 2022.

I hope you enjoy your journey in JCI Petaling Jaya in the 3rd quarter of 2021.

Leaders are made, they are not born. So where does one find a good source for leadership development? JCI is the ideal schools for leadership. The experience is an opportunity for learning an array of leadership and business skills that will have long-term benefits. To serve our membership and advance our mission it requires a board of directors. Our board and committees are made up of dedicated volunteers.

Volunteer service is an honour. I’ll be honest, it does require an investment in time and energy to fulfill expectations. Our members have entrusted us to make decisions that advance our organization mission.

With today’s busy schedules, it can be difficult to find people with enough time to serve. But without qualified volunteers we would be a weak organization. The opportunity to serve is an honour.

You may not realize the underlying benefits of volunteering.

What you learn can enhance personal and career skills in your life.

Therefore, I urge members to grab the opportunity available in JCI and make use of it.

All you need to do is start doing, jump out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to appreciate the 2021 board of directors, committees, founders, past presidents, members and alumni that have contributed to JCI Petaling Jaya and made it what it is today.

As the 2021 E-newsletter Editor, it is such a great pleasure to present you with our JCI Petaling Jaya #Issue 3 newsletter, which is designed to update our activities that we have done from July to September.

In these 3 months, we have organised business activity: 10 X Pitch; fruitful seminars: effective communication; International event: International Children Drawing Contest (ICDC); Community event: Together, We RICE (Rise); GMM, etc. These events have achieved successful and has empowered everyone in JCI PJ to learn various skills such as communication, negotiation, leadership, teamwork and event management.

I hope you will enjoy reading this E-newsletter and reminiscing those events and programs that JCI PJ had worked out with sweat and tears. The focus of this E-newsletter is not only allowed JCI members to understand JCI PJ but also inspire youth to actively participate and organise impactful event, make good use of this international platform to widen network and expand vision.

Great moment with family & friends.

I wish to restart my park adventure, hiking adventure and discovery adventure. I started these adventures a few years before the pandemic strikes. My park adventure brought me to almost all the parks in Klang Valley, we have many beautiful parks. I frequently went hiking in Wawasan Hill for exrercise and wish to explore other hills in Klang Valley. Finally to explore Malaysia and overseas.

Precious time with my family ;)

Visited sister chapter JCI Higashi Iruma (Japan), the trip was very memorable.

I don’t have any specific funny story throughout my JCI Journey but rather fun and memorable ones. But I would said one of the “funny part“ of my experience in JCI is that I was able to speak my mandarin even more fluently and better (I was from English educated). In JCI, people usually tend to improve their English better especially in JCI PJ. However for me, my mandarin improved after I joined JCI PJ and many of them mistaken that I was from Chinese school. I am truly happy and blessed for that.

However, the worse situations also tends to bring the best out of many people.

We are please to announce that as at 14.07.2021,

managed

raise

total

donation money amounting to RM7,228.00 in the space of 10 days (since our first post on 05.07.2021), and on behalf of the families who have benefited from the donation, we hereby express our utmost gratitude to all the generous patrons who had funded this project.

With the donation collected, we assembled ONE HUNDRED (100) Care Packages which all have been distributed to the specified beneficiaries on 14.07.2021.

International Collaboration #1 INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN DRAWING CONTEST X DRAGON AMBASSADOR This year International Children Drawing Contest (ICDC) was organized by JCI Petaling Jaya & JCI Tawau and crossover with another project called Dragon Ambassador that cooperated with JCI City from Hong Kong. This objective of this contest is to allow children from 10 - 12 years old to showcase their creativity through drawing and have the opportunity to achieve international recognition. Top 30 winners will be selected to display the drawing at Hong Kong during the Dragon Ambassador closing Ceremony on 8th August 2021.

The topic of the ICDC 2021 is "My Dream”. The purpose of this topic is to encourage children to discover and chase their dreams. Participants are required to draw about their dreams in a hexagon shape for participation. The top 30 will be given a hexagon drawing board and draw their artwork on it. The 30 hexagon boards were then delivered to Hong Kong for exhibition. Top 3 out of 30 artworks were selected as the top 3 winners of the contest.

International Collaboration #2 JCI ASIA-PACIFIC CONFERENCE JCI Asia Pacific Conference is an annual international event held every year where JCI members in the Asia Pacific areas meet to discuss issues on development and growth of the organization, the World, as various relevant community services ideas. Besides meetings, members enjoy training programmers by JCI certified trainers of high caliber and also fellowship with different Asian cultures. The 2021 Online Asia-Pacific Conference Taichung, Taiwan is hosted by JCI Cultural City from 19 to 22 August 2021.The theme for this year’s ASPAC is “RISE and Shine, Our Promising Future” – in alignment with the JCI RISE initiative.

Over the 4 day conference, all delegates will live and breathe the theme, RISE being to Raise, to Imagine, to Salute, and to Excite!

Each day we will incorporate these theme elements within our program. To Raise – we will get ready to raise up and energize ourselves to kick off the conference. Then we will Imagine – brainstorm, be creative, and put our imagination through its paces.

While we enjoy the conference program, we must also remember to Salute, not only to ourselves and fellow members for the efforts we have done during this year, but also especially to our leaders, and our mentors and seniors for passing on their experience and wisdom.

JCI Malaysia invited few experienced speakers such as David Lim Heng Rui from MaGic, Siew Ming Yan and Amanda Loh to share on the topic of startup and social innovation ecosystem, enhancing activities with technology and the mindset and subconscious mind respectively and many more speakers.

1. What is the impact of your project towards the society?

Project I2I targeted impact is aligned with the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) because we want to develop entrepreneurs that not only do well financially, but also maximize the impact that this program bring towards the society. Throughout the program, we will bring them from zero to ONE through the 3 pillars of our program Coaching & Mentoring, Self Development Workshops & Pilot Project. We know that the hardest is always the first step and hence why we focus on exactly that to help them bring their ideas to life. Our goal is really to create more successful entrepreneurs in Malaysia that can indirectly boost the economy.

2. What is your background, personally and professionally?

I work as Data Analytic Engineer who focus on Channelling, Storing and Analysing data. I will channel relevant data from machine and store them into database. Data that stored will be analysed for preventive maintenance or even predictive and prescriptive analysis. By doing this, we will be able to minimize the unplanned downtime of the production line, at the same time minimize the cost.

3. Have you managed a project in this field/industry before?

NO. This is fairly new to me and I have not participated in any project in area before. The reason why this project was born was because me and I2I OC – June Lee wanted to contribute to help increase the awareness of Impact Driven Entrepreneur in the society. We know many might be familiar with Non Government Organiazation or Traditional For Profit Organisation's business model, but not many are aware of the Socially Responsible Business Model. We believe that Impact Driven Entrepreneurship is the future of business models as it the only sustainable business model that can help organizations to do WELL and do GOOD! We believe that entrepreneurs are individuals that add value to the community while filling an existing gap to make the world a better place and should not soley focus on profits but creating an impact to the society and environment.

We know that we cannot possibly do EVERYTHING, but we are doing what we can, with what we have in where we are.

1. What is your encouragement to the team or to the aspiring young entrepreneurs out there?

Something I hold very close to heart which I want to also share with more people is “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” To me, it means, live a life that sets an example for others even though you are younger in age and might lack the experience in life but that does not mean we cannot set an example in the things that we do and say.

We may lack the experience & the knowledge, but we do not lack the passion & ambition to do great things!

2. What people think is NOT possible and why we think is possible?

I think this is a fairly new project concept in JCI and many might not have confidence in the success of the project. Some of the common obstacles others foresee in the program is the long program period and a less popular target market.

For me personally, I don’t see it as an obstacle to the success of the program, because the team is trying to deliver as much impact as we can to the participants through the program period, we strive to be different from the other programs out there by helping our participants to take action instead of just feeling motivated at the end of the program period. If we truly understand the outcome of the program, which is to help participants to kickstart their own enterprise, the program period wouldn’t seem that long because entrepreneurship is not something you can learn in a 2 hour session, there are a lot of different skillsets and knowledge involved and we hope to be able to provide a holistic program to our participants. We know we are never going to cover everything because after all it is the experience that matters, but we want to help them start off with a strong foundation because a good beginning is half the battle won.

Why Impact Driven Enterprise or Social Enterprise specifically? Because we believe this is the future of the business landscape, and we want to contribute to increasing awareness and visibility of this business model.

I may be too optimistic about it, but I don’t see it as an obstacle, I see it as an opportunity to stand out!

3. How many entrepreneurs that you target to produce from your project?

We target to reach out to 500 aspiring Impact Driven Entrepreneurs in the next 5 years!
