Message From

JCI Malaysia National President

Greetings to all JCI Malaysia members! Thank you for taking the time to read this issue of e-Pemimpin. It has been a great compilation of information that will assist us as a recruitment tool, a welcoming gift for new members and a supporting material when you meet prospective sponsors and partners. So, leverage it as much as you can! I would like to congratulate all the Area Chairs, the 4 hardworking National Executive Vice Presidents in carrying out the area conventions together with their dedicated area colleagues. Following the JCI “One Year to Lead” concept, it has enabled JCI Malaysia to continually be active and demand the National team to go all out in making a significant impact in our term of office. I am indeed fortunate to have many passionate leaders in my team, who have sacrificed so much for the advancement of members and the organization. This year has been a year of new records, a year where our unity is tested, a year where we have to face a new challenge in JCI Malaysia's history, a fully virtual year. And yet, we made it through with flying colors. Thank you to each of you dear member.

2021 National President JCI SENATOR CHEW HOOI MEI

Time flies and we are entering the last quarter of 2021. In this challenging time, with the persistence & leadership demonstrated by every JCI Malaysia member, from both local and international standpoint, we have certainly achieved some milestones.

PETRUS G. YOUNG

Message From 2021 JCI Malaysia Secretary General

In the 2021 Virtual ASPAC, we were the Top 3 delegations registered to the conference and every member showed active participation in almost all the program sessions as well as winning JCI Awards & JCI Creative Young Entrepreneur program (ASPAC Level). Also, we had 2 winners for the JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the world. JCI Malaysia Virtual National Convention is around the corner. There will be a lot of awards & competitions going on, some will win & some certainly lose, but one thing for sure, as blue blood JCI members, we celebrate everyone's success like our own success. Nonetheless, the National Convention is the time of the year when we make important decisions to conclude all that we have done for the year. It is also the time of the year where we bring out the best team in leading JCI Malaysia in 2022. I would like to wish everyone a fruitful convention ahead. Looking forward to working with you and seeing everyone in our 2021 JCI Malaysia Virtual National Convention!

It has come to the 3rd quarter of the year, which is less than 100 days to the end of 2021. What have you done thus far? Have you accomplished your goals? Always remember, what you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals. Reflection always enables us to evaluate the experience, learn from mistakes, repeat successes, revise and plan.

2021, a year that reminds me of appreciation. People come and people go. Life is a lot more fragile than we think. Treat others in a way that leaves no regrets, fairly and if possible, sincerely. It’s too easy not to make the effort, then weep and wring your hands after the person dies. Always be grateful, be blessed and be thankful. Thank you for still being around with us, dear readers. Stay safe and take care.

Life is full of ups and downs

Many people underestimate their ability and what they can achieve in life, including me. Potential is the difference between where we are now and where we could reach and it often leads to success. My 15-year JCI journey is a journey that discovers and unleashes potentials in me, taking me from where I was before to realising my dreams and goals now. It’s a process of releasing me from what is holding me back from the life I want and success.

I have faced different challenges throughout my service in JCI. When I face particular challenges, especially during the 2 years of Covid-19 pandemic, I tell myself this is life and I have to accept it as accepting challenges helps me to let go of stress, anxiety, and fear. While I take a step away from my feelings to plan, I am able to decide how to act more objectively. Taking action is one of the biggest steps in overcoming challenges. It’s likely that a big part of whatever we’re facing feels like a challenge because we have an underlying fear. Try to recognize and define what we fear in a situation. Then, we can act to mitigate that fear. We tend to exist in our comfort zones. So, when something new happens or is presented, we may feel like it’s hard to deal with. By practicing gratitude, we can reframe our definition of a challenge. We will also be more happy overall. Just need to remember: Everything happens for a reason; you may feel like you have it all figured out one day in the future.

I remember my very first experience in 2015 JCI ASPAC. I remember vividly that - at a limited number of places, I experienced meeting people from different nations. The trainings in the ASPAC were multinationals, and I was part of ASPAC Malaysia Night where we hosted

2. Do you face any challenges in your position in JCI during this pandemic? And how do you overcome it?

Hi, I’m JCIM National Secretary General in 2021.

I’ve been a JCI Riam member since early 2013. I joined because I was interested in community work and services, and JCI Riam was 1 of the non-profit organizations that was doing it. Also it’s because I have a few friends who are already JCI Riam members.

Academies & Conventions Attended

other

Besides, I had the opportunity to join JCI APDC, where I served JCI from another country, in which, I was assigned to JCI Timor-Leste as a development officer. Within these 2 years, as part of JCI Malaysia National Board of Directors, I’m still learning to serve with different leadership approaches while being tasked with different positions.

Over the years, as an active JCI member, I’ve been travelling to many places either domestically or internationally, and surely I enjoy it. All of us are grounded during this pandemic & forced to find different ways to live JCI life. Since last year, we have become accustomed to virtual life. As the NSG, my team and I work mostly using computers. And with online tools such as WhatsApp, Zoom and JVC (jvc.jci.ccc), we are easily connected in many ways. As active citizens, we should set an example and call for herd immunity.

Encourage the people around us to get vaccinated. And let's hope for the best that we can overcome this pandemic very soon.

With one year to lead, JCI has turned me into a better person, furnishing my leadership, management & communication skills. I’m always excited to meet new like-minded friends where JCI expands my network of friends & business contacts locally & across the globe. Overall, JCI has gifted me countless opportunities in enhancing aspects of personal growth, business & networking, community development & most importantly I have learnt to be a young & energetic community leader to create positive change & reaching out to my community for humanitarian services.

2. Do you face any challenges in your position in JCI during this pandemic? And how do you overcome it? As the 2021 JCI Malaysia National Treasurer, I would like to thank the National President JCI Senator Chew Hooi Mei for having faith in me to execute this position. I’m well aware that this position is considered the most important function on the board to safeguard all aspects of financial management of the organization. During this pandemic, we have to embrace new skills and develop new behaviors which improve the way we manage our assigned tasks. With millions of people being forced to stay home to help stop the spread of Covid-19, Zoom has played an important role to me and the National Board as a whole for planning and executing regular meetings & trainings. There is no denying the way we work has changed, but in many ways, it has changed for the better. Covid-19 has given a significant boost to the digitalisation of banking all over the world. The number of those using online banking services for the first time during the pandemic continues to rise year on year. In the beginning of 2021, we have launched our JCI Malaysia e-Store where members can purchase any merchandise at www.jcimalaysia.cc & even JCI programs are available for subscription. The e-payment system is not only providing a level of ease and speed but eliminating accounting errors, increasing transparency & accuracy. We have to adapt to this new norm and I will continue to do my best as the National Treasurer in this organization.

Let’s know more about me 1. How many years have you joined JCI and how has JCI benefited you? I joined JCI in 2011 and I don't realise that I have been active in this beloved organization for 10 years! Thanks to the National Publication Commission Chair for giving me this opportunity to review my JCI journey by having the chance to write for this E-Pemimpin edition. JCI has benefited me a lot! However, the most valuable thing that JCI gives to me is experience. JCI always provides development opportunities to me in growing and transforming into a better me.

2. Do you face any challenges in your position in JCI during this pandemic? And how do you overcome it? I never define those as challenges but it's an opportunity for me to improve myself in utilizing technology to adapt to a new normal life, a new way in growing my communication skills in listening to others and expressing myself, and also a new way for me to "feel" the people that I meet through the screen.

Hi, I’m JCIM National Immediate Past President in 2021.

1. How many years have you joined JCI and how has JCI benefited you? I joined JCI in the year 2011 and since then I have had a major change in my life which I thought it would be. JCI has a very clear mission, vision and values that lead us to be better. In our life, we may face a lot of challenges and many disappointments when things turn out of our expectations. From human relationships to achieving goals in life, JCI has taught me that everything is possible when we have a powerful positive mindset and a clear vision. JCI is an organization that gives me many chances to be a leader even though I am not born to be. From working alone to working with a team and walking far, this is how JCI benefits me.

2. Do you face any challenges in your position in JCI during this pandemic? And how did you overcome it? During the pandemic, which came without any signal, this has given me a chance to rethink and reset my goal. The challenges that I am facing are not only how to carry out these duties but more on how to be flexible on the Plan of Action, reallocating resources, listening to members’ voices, serving members’ and communities' needs. Leading a team has not been this hard before this pandemic and health is threatened. The only thing that keeps me motivated and moving on is “faith” and “love” that I put in this position.

Ba c k t o S c h ool 5 ( JC I M C E ) Back to School is a program that has been running for 5 years consecutively in Malacca, Malaysia. The program aims to serve as a platform to collect and consolidate company and personal funds as a temporary financial relief for the poor and underprivileged students and their families. Every year, JCI Malacca City Entrepreneur (MCE) works with the Union of Heads of Schools – Malacca Branch to identify underserved families and students from over 65 primary schools in Malacca to receive assistance and subsidies in the form of school bags, uniforms, shoes and school supplies. To date, more than 2 600 students have benefited from the program. Throughout the years, JCI MCE’s “Back to School'' program is one of the most well-recognized annual projects and platforms for public-listed companies, private companies, and individuals to channel their funds and care to underprivileged students and families in Malacca. Most importantly, “Back to School '', an annual and continuous program has created an awareness in the local community to acknowledge the local underprivileged group in Malacca and their equal rights in receiving quality education. The long-term objective of this program is aligned with the UNSDG Goal 4 – Quality Education. JCI MCE aims to provide a conducive environment for all regardless of their financial status to obtain quality education. Although the primary education in Malaysia is free and is made compulsory for children aged between 7-12, some underprivileged families still find it challenging with the associated additional expenditure required to send their children to schools. As a result, the financial and family stress arise and has substantial negative impacts on a child's ability to learn and

subsequently involved in problems ranging from drug addiction and family problems to bullying and depression. Hence, JCI MCE is committed to become an organization that raises community awareness on the matter and then uses connection and network in the community to channel the funds and resources available to assist primary school students and their families that are currently in need of financial relief. JCI MCE hopes that the program will not be a one-off or temporary financial relief, and instead become the kick starter to long term sustainable community movement to care for the underprivileged students in ensuring the provision of quality education for our next generation.

Dengue has significant economic consequences because of the burden on hospitals, work absenteeism and risk of death of symptomatic cases. To combat this deadly disease, JCI Kuala Lumpur Mandarin created Action Against Dengue Community Empowerment Program (AADCEP) to create an awareness about the dangers and negative implications of dengue to individual, family and community, advocating the involvement of each individual in the community as the prevention and control of dengue is a shared responsibility where everyone plays a role. Numerous activities were carried out including a Clean Swipe Program, collaborations with the local authority, hospitals and NGOs, the distribution of free dengue test kits and massive public relations and media strategies. “Leadership is unlocking people’s potential to become better” through ACTION, not position. Even from the start of President Senator WIlliam See's JCI career, he always led by example and was a man of action. He didn't mind getting his hands dirty even when he was a President. It is not easy to become the leader of JCI Kuala Lumpur Mandarin (KLM) as there are many members who are more experienced and powerful than President William. Even though he is a young President, he is able to earn their respect and admiration by: Listening to members Integrity Empowerment Appreciation He sets the vision and understands what is needed to achieve it and takes the lead by giving his board of directors goals and directions to members and making tough decisions when facing challenges. WIlliam is a leader that comes once in a lifetime. Being a man for others, he leads with his heart, always putting others first. He is a selfless leader, who finds himself at home serving other people. From formal events to community projects, every moment with William is an example of his selfless leadership. Thus, during the Covid-19 pandemic, he directed and guided members in completing 152 projects and 383 project meetings using the JCI Action Framework.

NGO - A place full of politics NGO - A place that gathers all people with personal agenda Are those really true? Part of it and in fact, politics are everywhere; you can only live with it and settle with it. In the end, those that have personal agendas will be isolated and eventually quit the game. All I want to say is there's no such thing as a good or bad platform; it all depends on how you see the platform. As long as you are willing to serve, any NGO is a good organisation, and I choose JCI, which gathers a bunch of people who are willing to serve.

In these 11 years of service, I'd like to thank all my mates, partners, trainers, mentors, and friends who believe in me. This award is for all of you. I'm not going to shout out everyone's name because it's probably going to take another 3 pages. Last but not least, I'm not too free to make myself busy but I'd rather spend my precious time at the right place, with the right person, on the right thing. So HAPPY SERVE, HAPPY LOVE, enjoying every moment is the best thing in JCI! With love and peace, we'll meet again real soon.

FOOD HERO

Officially launched on 15th July 2019,

Food Hero was initiated by JCI Petaling Jaya as a sustainable long-term project which channels food supply to needy groups in the Petaling Jaya community. Food Hero provides daily bread to 75 children from 3 orphanage homes and several poor families and currently partners with 4 bakeries and 2 delivery companies. The project was designed as per the JCI 2019 Plan of Action and JCI Active Citizen Framework. Through deepening engagement with partners, organisations who have never heard of JCI are now partnering with us to make a difference. We also receive support from the youngest ADUN, YB Jamaliah Jamuluddin, the Guest of Honor in Food Hero’s Press Conference.

At an approximately discounted value

of RM2.50 per bun, this would add up to savings of

RM30 000 for

Food Hero beneficiaries in a duration of 18 months.

The project still continues until today and even during MCO. Throughout the course of this project, we notice many of the partners and beneficiaries engaged in Food Hero are young citizens. Many who had previously not heard of JCI were impressed with the mission of JCI and have wilfully decided to partner with us. We are positive that Food Hero will provide development opportunities to the beneficiaries and partners, thus empowering them to create positive change.

ZERO VIRUS!

is one of the flagship projects of JCI Kota Kinabalu since the Covid-19 pandemic started to hit us globally in early 2020.

Alan Moo - who deeply believes that prevention is better than cure, has kicked start the project by successfully providing free disinfection services to unaffordable pre-schools around the community with the support and sponsorship of A Plus Pharmacy. Till date, Zero Virus! 2021 successfully visited and disinfected 6 pre-schools, primary schools and also elderly care homes around Kota Kinabalu. Other than providing free disinfection services to the schools and elderly care homes, the team also shared proper hand wash procedures and increased the awareness of hand, foot and mouth disease to the public by providing video and posters to spread around the community. This has also attracted our Sabah Chief Minister's Political Assistant, Dr. Roland Chia and his team to join one of our disinfection service and awareness programs in Tabika & Taska Kemas PPAK Kg. Unggun Jaya.
