MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT REMAINS AS OUR MAIN FOCUS IN 2021. WE RECEIVED MANY ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATIONS IN THE AREA CONVENTIONS’ PUBLIC SPEAKING AND DEBATE COMPETITIONS.

Greetings to all JCI Malaysia members!

As time flies, now we are almost at the end of Quarter 2 of the year 2021.

I would like to congratulate all the Area Chairs the 4 persevering National Executive Vice Presidents in executing their respective Area Convention successfully together with their dedicated area colleagues.

In Quarter 2, we have conducted various virtual events, especially in the pillar of personal development. This is a great movement in JCI Malaysia as I could personally witness how our local organizations are aligned to JCI RISE by strengthening the current workforce as well as elevating demanded skills to combat Covid-19 pandemic.

Moreover, there are local organizations who constantly put up their determination to improve their current progress and never let this pandemic halt their activities.

Overall, JCI Malaysia membership has increased throughout these first 2 quarters despite the pandemic challenges. It is important for our JCI Malaysia leaders to walk the talk in achieving the victory. Members feel the excitement and involvement when they are being given ownership by the local organizations to make their respective events successful.

One of the Area Incentives - The Top Recruiter is a recognition to appreciate members who have shown great commitment to recruit their friends in joining the JCI family. They practise the true meaning of recruitment even though our events are only conducted virtually. We may have been demoralized by the pandemic at the beginning, but I believe all of us are strong enough to adapt and to continue showing the best of JCI to the community.

Lastly, I hope all JCI Malaysia members stay safe and healthy during this lockdown period. I am sure that we will be meeting up again soon whether via virtual platform or physical events.

2021 JCI Malaysia Secretary General As we march into the beginning of the 3rd quarter of the year, it is my honor to share a few thoughts for my beloved organization, JCI Malaysia.

First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, from the National Board of Directors to the Area Officers, Local Organization Presidents, Board of Directors & members who work together as colleagues, sharing and executing our JCIM Plan of Action as well as doing our best to strive for higher achievements.

Although due to strict lockdown during this Pandemic period, we as JCI members, never stop. When we can’t meet physically, we meet virtually; when we can’t talk face to face, we are one phone call away.

If there’s a will, there is a way. Let's never forget our ultimate JCI Mission - To provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change.

2021 JCI Malaysia National Publication Commission Chairperson Time flies and half of the year of 2021 has passed. How’s life so far? I would say good as we are still alive, waiting for the day to meet physically, flying around the globe. I would also say bad as we are still living terrifyingly as we don't know the time for the pandemic to be over. So, why not cherish the moment, embrace the new norm, live without worries and stay safe?

It is always good to have e-Pemimpin quarterly to rewind the memories that we left remarkable. In this edition of e-Pemimpin, we proudly introduce to you the 3 main awards from JCI - JCI TOYM, JCI CYEA & JCIM SDA! Junior Chamber International About Junior Chamber International: Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a global membership-based non-profit organization of young active citizens ages 18 to 40 who are dedicated to creating positive change in their communities. Through projects in more than 5000 communities across more than 100 countries, members seek targeted solutions to local problems, creating a global impact.

The JCI movement started on October 13, 1915 by one active citizen, Henry Giessenbier, who had a passion for positive change. Since then, millions of other young active citizens have united together to create sustainable impacts in their community.

Junior Chamber International MALAYSIA About JCI Malaysia Junior Chamber International Malaysia (JCI Malaysia) is a National Organization of the Junior Chamber International in Malaysia. JCI Malaysia was chartered in 1976 and is affiliated to Junior Chamber International (JCI), a global leadership development organization for young active citizens aged 18 to 40, founded in 1915 in St Louis, US by Henry Giessenbier. JCI Malaysia is managed by its National Board of Directors who are all volunteers, serving based on JCI’s “One Year to Lead” value.

Membership There are over 2400 members from 73 local organizations affiliated to JCI Malaysia, from Area North, Central South, Sabah and Sarawak. JCI membership is open to all nationalities, races and religions.

WHAT IS JCI TOYM? The Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians Award (TOYM) program originated from the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP) award. It was developed by Durwood Howes (Jaycees President, USA) in 1930 and adopted by JCI in 1982.

The TOYM program serves to recognize up to ten individual Malaysians between the ages of 18 and 40 who exemplify the best attributes of the country’s young people. Honorees of TOYM will have an opportunity to represent Malaysia to be nominated for the International TOYP Award against 122 other countries. The award takes place at the annual JCI World Congress.

The TOYM program was launched by Junior Chamber International Malaysia (JCIM) in 1985 to commemorate the International Year of the Youth. JCIM then decided to enact this program as an annual project.

The main objective of TOYM is to provide recognition to Outstanding Young Individuals, thereby serving as inspiring examples and incentives to Young Malaysians. It is our hope that these individuals forge ahead to greater heights of achievement in the spirit of selfless dedication for the further development of the community.

WHO I S ELIGIB LE T O JOI N ?

Any individual or registered organization in Malaysia can nominate any young Malaysians aged between 18 to 40 years old, with outstanding achievement or contribution in one of the following categories: 01 Business, Economic and /or Entrepreneurial Accomplishment 02 Political, Legal and /or Government Affairs 03 Academic Leadership and /or Accomplishment 04 Cultural Achievement 05 Moral and /or Environmental Leadership 06 Contribution to Children, World Peace and /or Human Rights 07 Humanitarian and /or Voluntary Leadership 08 Scientific and /or Technological Development 09 Personal Improvement and /or Accomplishment 10 Medical Innovation

WHY MU S T I JOIN? 01 The entire review and scoring process is very rigorous, and will not allow people who do not meet the criteria to win the award in the cause of raising enough ten places. In previous years, it happened that only 5 to 6 people won the award.

Money, fame and influence cannot buy you this award. This award mainly commends young people who have outstanding performance in professional work or who have made contributions to the society.

What else can I do if I missed the registration? You can understand the background of previous awards and prepare for the next one. The good news is that our registration deadline is extended to August 31st. So, don't miss it! Do submit the information soon.

There is an age limit for this award, which is between 18 and 40 years old. Please don’t miss it if you are eligible for it. The nominee has to be nominated by another person and not yourself.

The award is divided into ten categories. The winners chosen are recognized as best of the best in each category. Most importantly, the winners also have the opportunity to participate in the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP).

WHAT IS JCIM SDA? Endorsed by JCI Malaysia National Board of Directors in 2016, the JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award is an unprecedented award in Malaysia, granted to projects organized by Malaysian Companies and Organizations (non-profit organizations and government agencies) that advance on any of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The objective of this award is to raise awareness to the 17 UNSDGs to the public and to recognize sustainable projects that bring impacts aligned to these goals.

The 1st Malaysia Sustainable Development Award was held the following year at Sunway Putra Hotel, recognizing impactful projects. The National Global Goals Commission Chair, Celine Khor was the Organizing Chairlady of the event and made it a huge success with the collaboration from all areas and members from various local organizations.

This award allocates two award recipients for each SDG (e.g. 1 for company category and 1 for other organization category) , except for SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals. The SDG 17 award is given to the Best of the Best project that has the most sustainable partnership program.

There are 33 award trophies to be presented.

WHO I S ELIGIB LE T O JOI N ?

All companies, non-profit organizations, government agencies, trust funds and educational institutions that are incorporated in Malaysia are encouraged to join JCIM SDA. Other eligibility criteria include: 01 The nomination must not be a duplicative work of others 02 Nominees must not be involved or related in illegal activities 03 All nomination entries must be submitted in English

2021 JCI Malaysia Area Central South Convention (ACSC) was a legendary story. In this convention, we experienced many difficulties, uncertainties and forced deferment due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, we still showed our determination, positivity and unity. Eventually, together with the area committee and hosting LO JCI Austin Perdana, we successfully made everything happen. Therefore, we themed the convention as

“LEGEND BEGINS : UNI TE D SO UT HE R N” The plan never kept up with the changes even though we had started our plans and worked early at the beginning of the year. Initially, we planned everything for a full physical convention. Then, we switched to a semi-virtual convention by limiting the number of delegates and physical sessions after the pandemic got worse. Two days before the convention, we had no choice but to switch to a full virtual convention due to the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO). After we had decided to run a full virtual convention within 48 hours, we were still determined to do it positively and differently to provide a better experience and dual way connections between the delegates and speakers all the time.

The convention was held in 8 days with 20 different sessions. From 11th April 2021 until 24th April 2021, preliminary rounds and then semi-finals until the final round for speech competitions and oregon debate competitions were completed before the convention.

In the early morning of 7th May 2021, the convention officially began. On the day, the Local Presidents’ Summit, Team Meeting and General Assembly ran smoothly with the help from the committee, especially the technical team from the hosting LO JCI Austin Perdana.

At night, we had the Welcoming Night that had a list of programmes such as march-in session and speeches. However, it was not a perfect night due to technical problems. After the session had finished, the committee gathered immediately to have a review meeting for Day One so that they could improve on the second day.

In the early morning of 8th May 2021, all planned sessions such as General Assembly, Area Business Networking Event, SDG Dialogue and Quiz and Digital Marketing Seminar ran smoothly. On the night of Gala, the delegates were able to interact with each other; Presidents were given the chance to speak during the march-in, award winners were able to give their award speeches and delegates were spotlighted randomly to say "Hi" to the audience. The night was remarkable. In the early morning of 9th May 2021, all the rest of the planned sessions went on smoothly and the convention finally ended at 2p.m. There were 402 delegates who participated in this convention virtually.

To all delegates, we not only knew each other better, but also learnt something more about JCI through this convention. To the area team and committee, everyone of us had not only gone through a special life experience, but also made us become better friends by getting to know each other deeper throughout the preparatory work of the convention. To the hosting LO JCI Austin Perdana: we have better friendship, better understanding about JCI, and also better hosting experience for the next bidding of area projects.

The theme for our 2021 JCI Malaysia Area North Convention (ANC) is

“ TIM E TO B LO O M ” Just like how flowers bloom, it is the time of the year for Area North members to show how much we have developed, both individually and collectively, alongside our local organizations.

With ANC held virtually due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the Area North Team worked with JCI Tanjung Bunga, this year’s hosting local organization (LO), to provide an interactive experience of congregation for all delegates.

The 3-day convention was designed to fulfil the objective of engaging our members in every possible way. As soon as the Opening Ceremony was held, we started with the annual Local President Summit before hosting an Area Team Meeting after lunch. Both Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Quiz and Parliamentary Online Quiz followed prior to ending the day with a talk on Road to Senatorship.

We got up as early as, if not earlier than, eight in the morning for the second day of ANC. This year’s Labor Day was celebrated at home by Area North members as most of us witnessed or joined a total of two debate championships and three public speaking championships in different languages. After dinner, it was our National President Forum and Trainers Arena Forum. The highlight of the night continued with Area North’s very own version of Talent Show: JCI Got Talent! We watched as participants from different LOs performed what they are good at and showcased their talents in front of our virtual judges.

The final day of ANC started with JCI Junior & Youth President Summit.

Then, Day 3 was fully spent on attending General Assembly 1 and 2.

We discussed pending matters involving our area and made important decisions as members of JCI Malaysia Area North before finally indulging ourselves with the Closing and Awards Ceremony of this year’s Area North Convention.

The theme for our 2021 JCI Malaysia Area Sabah Convention (ASC) is

“ UN ITE D T O G E TH E R” JCI Lintas hosted the 2021 JCIM Area Sabah Virtual Convention from 4th to 6th of June 2021. The Area Team meeting was held on 3rd June 2021 as the pre-convention program.

Two workshops were held on the first day of the convention. The first one was Trainers Arena with NSDCC Zelt Kueh, followed by Action Framework & SDG Workshop with NSDCC Zelt Kueh and NSDGC Maegann Yap. An SDG Quiz was conducted afterwards with a total of 35 participants.

Saturday, 5th June 2021, was a great day of program from morning till evening. To name a few, we had the Opening Ceremony, Local Presidents Summit, NP Forum, JCI RISE Mental Health Talk, Road to Senatorship, and Strategic Planning Committee Workshop. Four final competitions were also conducted, which were: Chinese Oregon Debate, Malay Public Speaking Competition, Mandarin Public Speaking Competition, and English Public Speaking Competition.

General Assembly 1 was held on the last day of the convention, starting at 8.00 a.m., followed by Parliamentary Quiz preliminary and final.

General Assembly 2 then convened at 1.00 p.m., with 2022 candidate indications and project biddings being one of the highlights in the meeting.

The convention ended with the Awards & Closing Ceremony where all winners were announced via Facebook Live Stream. Congratulations to all winners!

In support for our beloved Area Chairman Emily Bong’s theme of “Development, Navigation, Achievement” (DNA), 2021 JCI Malaysia Area Sarawak Virtual Convention was successfully held in Miri from 6th to 9th of May 2021 with the theme of

“BRINGING PE O PL E TO G E T HE R ” We had nearly 130 participants who attended this eventful annual convention. Area Sarawak Team would like to thank and congratulate JCI Riam for hosting 2021 JCI Malaysia Area Sarawak Virtual Convention.

This year, Area Sarawak focuses on the spirit of togetherness and we truly hope our Area Chairman can achieve her goals by the end of the year. This 4-day virtual convention was meaningful to our members.

We had 15 great activities like Local President Summit, General Assembly, National President Forum, Public Speaking & Debate Competitions, Parliamentary Quiz, Sustainable Development Goals Quiz and seminars. What makes our area proud is not the number of participants that took part in the convention, not about how much money or how many sponsors that we had, as well as not how many trainings we organized in this convention. What makes us proud is how the development opportunities help the Local Organizations to grow positively.

During the convention, Area Sarawak members had the General Assembly to review the plan of action for the past few months; we are happy and proud to say that most of the items in the plan of action are DONE!!!

Love Brings Protection & Digital Makeover 线下企业大翻身

Love Brings Protection Early this year, the Covid-19 cases in Klang had shot up to nearly a thousand a day. On 1 Feb 2021, JCI Bandar Klang took the initiative to launch LOVE Brings Protection fundraising campaign, with a target of raising 10 000 PPEs in a month to extend our deepest appreciation for the hard work and tireless efforts shown by the frontliners to keep us safe. The fundraising goal was far exceeded by the closing date on 28 Feb, bringing the total amount collected to RM45 000 from the caring public. 100% of the contribution was utilized in the procurement of 18 000 pieces of PPE for the frontliners.

This project was endorsed and supported by Pejabat Ahli Parlimen Klang and also witnessed by our Member of Parliament Y.B. Charles Santiago during the handover ceremony. Apart from that, we were also acknowledged by the Deputy Health Minister of Malaysia Y.B. Dato' Dr. Haji Noor Azmi bin Ghazali.

We are blessed that this project had 13 supporting partners and we even composed a project theme song that went viral at Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI1lH881 xwE The bodies benefited from the fundraising initiative were Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Klang, Klinik Kesihatan Pandamaran and Majlis Perbandaran Klang.

JCI Bandar Klang - Digital Makeover

线下企业大翻身 In response to the MCO imposed by the government from March to May 2020 to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, JCI Bandar Klang, together with TDG Asia Branding Agency & 8tivation had launched Digital Makeover for Offline Business Campaign – 线 下企业大翻身 with the aim of helping SMEs with their brand development. A total of 19 live sessions had been conducted to help the offline businesses establish a good online presence.

In the past 19 live sessions, we invited many SMEs who have successfully transformed their businesses from offline to online. We also shared a lot of tips and techniques about the transformation of offline companies to digital presence, online brand deployment, skills for live broadcasting, the effects of virtual event to business expansion, marketing for organizations, online strategies for personal branding and also motivation talk to encourage those traditional business owners to digitalize their business.

The Clean Water Movement

Clean Water Movement is a flagship project by JCI Padawan with a timeline of 5 years (2019-2023). Our main objective is to distribute water filters to communities that do not have access to clean water. In Borneo, there are still a number of areas facing this difficulty. Since the beginning of our Clean Water Movement project back in February 2019, we have reached out to more than 1000 individuals from different villages across Borneo which required an average of 6-hour drive from the Kuching city.

The villagers need an average of 2 to 3 hours just to reach any nearby town to get clean water from convenience shops. That is truly very inconvenient and not economical for locals to travel back and forth. Having an access to clean potable water minimizes their need to travel constantly to get clean water for their daily use. We usually gather at the Tuai Rumah along with a few men to demonstrate how to set up and use the water filters.

We are told by the villagers that they rely solely on river and rain water for their daily usage and will just boil the water to make it into drinking water. The rain water is insufficient to last them a few days let alone during drought season.

The Clean Water Movement is awarded as the Winner for 2019 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award with our main goal aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal #6 Clean Water & Sanitation. We sincerely hope that the water filters will make an impact in the villagers' daily lives as we believe everyone deserves clean water.

Our first international project was a collaboration with JCI Bahcesehir, Turkey in order to provide an international platform for JCI members from Malaysia and Turkey that encourages business sharing and collaboration. Members were given the international opportunities to export and expand their businesses.

10 members from Malaysia and 10 from Turkey presented their businesses via Zoom. There were 28 opportunists attending it.

The second international project was a collaboration with JCI East Java, Indonesia to provide an international platform for JCI members from Malaysia and Indonesia.

A total of 46 members attended as both opportunists and presenters from both local organizations. There were good interactions among the members as they participated actively in the project.

It was a great sharing for everyone. Thank you to the Organizing Chairlady Khew Ee Hung for making it successful.
