Message

Welcome back!

It's the beginning of a new journey.

First, I would like to say it has been a wonderful first quarter being able to meet many of our members in Area North. The switch back to physical activities have no doubt boast our morale after a challenging two years period.

It has been a busy first quarter as we start to relearn new knowledge and adopting to changing behavior. I am optimistic with our Area's growth in 2022 but I need all of you to pitch in.

This publication reflects the collective effort of all my team members and I invite anyone who share our goal in developing enterprising leaders to join us!

Message Firstly, it is an opportunity and honor for me to be part of the 2022 Area North Team as the Publications and Linguistic Director!

I appreciate our Area Chairman Wei Jian for inviting me to this learning experience with his team.

My Publications portfolio is to publish 3 issues of Area North E-newsletter this year.

As for Linguistics, I was tasked to motivate and promote JCI contest such as Oregon Debate, Debate and Public Speaking competition to our JCI Malaysia Area North members As a JCI member, we are ready to adapt to new changes and adapt to the new norm! We hope to see everyone soon in physical events.

That is all for now, I hope you enjoy reading this issue of the area newsletter.

Intro to Area North As JCI Malaysia Area Peninsular achieves rising growth in terms of membership and chapters, the area was split into JCI Malaysia Peninsular North and JCI Malaysia Area Peninsular Central South in 2012.

In 2019, the word "Peninsular" was dropped and henceforth the area is known as JCI Malaysia Area North.

Area North Theme

The Unity Legacy

Even before the beginning of their term. all Area Chairperson will be tasked with coming up with a theme for the year that will reflect the overall focus or mood of the area. The theme naming situation in Area North is rather special as "Unity" have been used since 2016 with different variation on the tagline.

In 2022, the theme for Area North will be Unity: Step Forward; the messaging is clear, it is to call upon all aspiring leaders to take the Step Forward and be the change we wish to see in our community.

Proudly present the 2022 Area North Committee The Area Committee is the executive body which oversees and administers the operation of JCI Malaysia affairs within then Area and to execute the objectives as per the National Plan of Action, Mission and Objectives.

This year, the committee is comprise of a total of 17 voting members with 8 members as the Executive Committee (EXCO) and the rest being regular members whom are all Area Directors.

Each Area Director will be in-charge of one or multiple portfolios that works closely with the National Commission of the same portfolio.

Composition of Area Leadership GENDER The gender ratio at the leadership team is 24% women to 76% men. In contrast to the overall membership gender composition in Area North, women members are underrepresented in the leadership team by approximately 20%.

Local Impact

JCI Butterworth City

Beach Cleaning JCI Butterworth City collaborated with the Penang Youth Development Council (PYDC), Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai and Majlis Belia Negeri Pulau Pinang to carry out the beach cleaning activity. This project involved 62 youth volunteers and 30 MBSP workers.

This event successfully collected around 4 tonnes of rubbish on the beach. ''Lately there have been flooding and many natural disaster. As a JCI member, we hope to contribute and play our role to protect the environment" - Yu Jin, Organizing Chairperson It is also a great opportunity that JCI Butterworth City is able to have a great bonding with other youth organizations during the beach cleaning project. They hope that trough-out this project, the community and the youth are able to self educate themselves by knowing how to classify the garbage and do not litter to make our surroundings cleaner.

Fundraise For

JCI Kinta

Kampung Tawas On 30th January, JCI Kinta was informed of the severe wind storm that hit Douhua New Village, directly causing many of the residents to suffer heavy losses or even worst facing displacement. On the very next day, JCI Kinta members hit the ground to assist the victims with relief efforts.

JCI Kinta Local President Jasper Ngai and Vice President Randolph Tan shared that at the same time through JCI Kinta's network, EK Charity Team delivered plastic roofs, roof sheets and other construction materials from Selangor for the purpose of rebuilding the home of those affected. The items were received by the Storm Relief Task Force Advisor, Ipoh City Councillor Mr. Albert Ho Wai Mun. Upon assessing the situation, JCI Kinta launched a fundraiser and they have managed to raised RM30,083 in a short span of 12 days doubling their target. The funds were hand over to the Disaster Relief Committee which consists of Kampung Tawas residents and multiple NGO.

Run with Flying Colors

#BreakTheBias In conjunction with International Women's Day 2022, JCI Pearl brings to us the 6th edition of its' flagship project - "2022 Run With Flying Colours - Pass It On #BreakTheBias". This project is supported by the Penang State Government and sponsored by OMNE nutridrinks.

The Organizing Chairperson, Kar Tien shared that they have achieved a few breakthroughs this year. Firstly, JCI Pearl have took the initiative to compose and produced a theme song for this project. The theme song's main purpose is to motivate the runners and to amplify the messaging of the run which is to promote gender equality.

Secondly, they have received more than 1,000 registrations for this run with the youngest at the age of two. Notably, there are a few International registrations which is out of the organizer's expectation.

Besides the run, other activities such as virtual Zumba (Zoomba) and Instagram Reel Contest is also introduced to further engage with members of the public to promote the project's objectives. The closing of the project will be on 3rd April 2022.

Area North Leadership Retreat 15-16 Jan, Tanjung Bunga - A Area North Leadership Retreat was organized to synchronize strategy and to align goals with the newly appointed Area Committee. This retreat is attended by most of the Committee members and multiple goals and target were set for Area North in 2022.

The National membership growth target is 25%, but during this session the Area North Leadership were challenged to aim higher at a growth target of 35%. Let the record shows everyone in attendance were committed to this higher goal.

The committee were coached by 2003 JCI Vice President JCI Senator Velvet Ooi and 2019 Area Chairperson JCI Senator Catherine Chang was invited as a guest speaker.

Shine Bright Like Diamond 22-23 Jan, Alor Setar- After two years of activities being held virtually. The 2022 Area North Academy is the first major event being held virtually.

This year, the Academy is hosted by JCI Sungai Petani at Star City Hotel, Alor Setar. The event saw the attendance of 84 members from 16 Local Organizations.

For the first time, the JCI Empower module is adopted for the syllabus of the Academy with the focus to help Local Officers to kick start their year with all the fundamental skill sets and know how.

The Head Trainer is 2017 National President JCI Senator Nurul-Huda assisted by Matt Ngai and Raymond Goh.

Area Happenings Area Committee Installation 22 Jan, Alor Setar- The 2022 Area North Committee Installation is held during the Area North Academy organized by the participants of the Academy as part of the JCI Empower module. To highlight, this ceremony was held in both English and Bahasa Malaysia as part of a new initiative in Area North to improve proficiency of the National Language.

The installation is graced by the President of Majlis Belia Kedah, saudara Mohd Amir Murshidi bin Samsuddin and the National President, JCI Senator Ellen Lu.

Area Happenings Press Visits

21 Jan, Alor Setar & 8 Feb, Penang- Press relations are one of the most important focus for JCI Malaysia Area North. In conjuntion with the Lunar New Year celebration, the Area North committee and Local Organization paid courtesy visits to multiple news outlets in Kedah and Penang.

The delegation were well received by all the Press Media and have managed to get some feedback on how to improve bilateral relations with them. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our friends in journalism and media for their support and dedication to their profession.

Meeting the Deputy Minister

Gerak Belia 27 Feb, Penang- JCI Malaysia Area North was invited to attend a dialogue session with Dato' Sri YB Senator Ti Lian Ker, the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport at the Penang Youth & Sport Office.

During the dialogue, the Deputy Minister encouraged the youth organizations in Penang to actively take part in the Ministry's programs for youth as he noticed that the participation rate for certain organizations are low.

During the meet, JCI Malaysia Area North committed to the Deputy Minister that we will do our best to promote Youth & Sports programs to our affiliates.

22 ANC MOU Signing & Courtesy Visit 12 Mar, Ipoh - With the assistance of Immediate Past Area Chairperson Matt Ngai, a MOU signing ceremony and courtesy visit to Majlis Belia Perak was held.

A dialogue was held with President of Majlis Belia Perak President saudara Muhammad Puhaz Saleh on the transition of the amendment to the Youth Act.
