Dear JCI Malaysia Area North Convention Delegates, First of all, on behalf of JCI Tanjung Bunga & Area North, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 2021 JCI Malaysia Area North Convention! As much as all of us would like to meet each other physically, due to the pandemic we are confined to organize this convention virtually two years in a row.

Despite that, my team has worked hard in ensuring our delegates and guest will find this convention as enjoyable and memorable as a physical convention.

Lastly, I would like to thank our Gold Sponsor, Danai Wellness, Brand Consultant Mood Design, partners, sponsors and advertisers for your kind support and guidance rendered to us in ensuring a well organized and successful convention. They say bad times bring out the best in people and I for one truly believe that. The pandemic may be wearing all of us thin, but our members have been doing extraordinary work since the beginning of the pandemic helping our community, empowering our members and continuing to serve. Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang for his tremendous support of this convention and we convey our deepest appreciation for his contribution and time to empower the young leaders of our organization. YAB CHOW KON YEOW CHIEF MINISTER OF PENANG The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted all levels of our community making it more important than ever to be resilient and innovative. I commend the team led by the Area North Chairperson, Mr. Matt Ngai, Convention Director, Mr. Bernard Ong and the hosting chapter President, Mr. Jia Dic for embracing the new normal by transitioning from an annual physical convention to a hybrid (physical & virtual) version of the convention.

The Area North Convention brings together over 100 delegates from Area North (Kedah, Penang, and Perak), as well as guests from all over Malaysia, to network, exchange knowledge and ideas, review strategies, make decisions, and to celebrate accomplishments. I am confident that the young leaders of JCI will together make this convention a productive and memorable one.

The Penang State Government is pleased to see JCI local organizations actively collaborating with the state government to address community issues, particularly during this time of crisis. JCI members have helped to uplift the livelihoods of underprivileged communities, contributed personal protective equipment (PPE) to our front liners, organized virtual seminars that are helpful to small medium business owners and much more.

Looking forward to strengthening civic participation, and as a state that emphasises people empowerment as a hallmark of our administration through the Penang2030 vision, the Penang State Government hopes that JCI will continue to attract more young people and prepare them to take on the challenges of today and tomorrow.

With that, I extend my best wishes for the 2021 Junior Chamber International (JCI) Malaysia Area North Convention.

GUEST OF HONOR MESSAGE SAUDARA JUFITRI JOHA MALAYSIAN YOUTH COUNCIL PRESIDENT

Peace and Regards, I was informed that this year is the second year that the JCI Malaysia Area North Virtual Convention is held virtually. Convid-19 is really changing the way we work especially involving youth organizations. Congratulations to the entire JCI Malaysia Area North team as you quickly adapt to the new norms that are sweeping the globe.

This change should be used as an example to other youth organizations in Malaysia.

On the part of MBM, indeed, the cooperation of the program must be continued to ensure that the future of the youth in this country continues to be excellent and protected. I hope the leadership of JCI Malaysia North Area will continue to play an active role, especially in efforts to improve the socio-economy of the youth. I believe, these youths should be guided and exposed to the agenda based on the country's Constitution to form a competitive idea, regardless of religious, racial and cultural differences.

MBM also needs support from JCI Malaysia as a whole in contributing the idea of formulating a New Model of Youth Development that will be used by all youth organizations in Malaysia. The involvement of JCI Malaysia is important because JCI Malaysia is seen as a movement that is quite active, especially at the grassroots level apart from having a caliber of leadership.

Once again, on behalf of MBM and the affiliates under MBM, I would like to congratulate the leadership and the entire staff of JCI Malaysia North Area on their determination to produce the E-Magazine in conjunction with the 2021 Area North Convention. This copy certainly has its own historical value for your organization.

JCI SENATOR CHEW HOOI MEI 2021 JCI MALAYSIA NATIONAL PRESIDENT MESSAGE Dear JCI Members and Friends, Greetings from the Pearl of Island.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Area North for giving me the opportunity to pen down a few words and warm greetings in the newsletter. The first quarter of year 2021, Malaysia face another spike of cases due to the covid19 pandemic and has cause many uncertain changes in the area planning especially the area academy which has been planned a year ahead.

However, I would like to compliment the efficiency of JCI Malaysia members into taking measurement to aligned the 2021 JCI Malaysia’s Plan of Action. The commitment made by the members nationwide has showcase the capability and spirit as a proud JCI member.

The focus in 2021 in Enabling Leaders. JCI Malaysia believes that enabling JCI members with leadership skills is the way to drive our organisation forward and beyond in 2021. To achieve the goals, the main FOUR focus on DOTS will connect each of us together and rowing into the same direction.

D-Development, JCI Malaysia believes that leadership development program will nurtures new talents and enhances the current talents to maximise the potential of JCI in different levels to create global impact. O-Opportunities, with competent leaders at local levels, JCI Malaysia will provide collaboration platform to ensure Local Organisations able to explore different stakeholders and partners through various entrepreneurship programs. T-Transform, with the core pillars of JCI, JCI Malaysia will transform members through enrichment programs and evaluate the performance systematically to ensure S-Sustainability of your local organisation and JCI Malaysia.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate Area North team lead by NEVP Matthew Ngai for striving together with the whole organisation. I believe with the theme “Unity – Towards Excellence”, Area North will unite the members with strong passion and strive through this pandemic together.

MATT NGAI CHEE HAU 2021 JCI MALAYSIA NATIONAL EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT CUM AREA NORTH CHAIRMAN MESSAGE

The period between late April and early May is usually the middle of the Spring season. It is the time where flora is nourished after enduring the challenging Winter season. It is a time where leaves grow and flowers blossomed. It is the Time to Bloom.

Just like the flowers blooming in Springtime, the theme “Time to Bloom” captures the spirit of 2021 JCI Malaysia Area North’s Convention and the hosting local organisation, JCI Tanjung Bunga.

While this year’s convention could not be held in a full physical format due to the ongoing pandemic, the entire Area North Team together with the hosting local organisation continue to adapt and work together in order to provide participants with the fullest engagement opportunities while ensuring adherence to the health regulations in place. This adaptability and cooperativeness show the spirit of Unity among all members in Area North.

As we conclude the first quarter of the year, it is important that members continue to face the upcoming challenges head on and to strive for excellent work, which is aligned to the Area theme this year, Unity: Towards Excellence. Unity without excellence can lead to unthinking conformity, while excellence without unity often results in purposeless pursuits. When both are in place, great work can be achieved while ensuring the benefits of everyone.

Finally, I would like take this opportunity to congratulate Convention Director Bernard Ong and his team for serving as the backbone of this convention, the Area North Committee for executing the programs and all the participants for coming together to make this a truly wonderful experience.

OF JCI MALAYSIA AREA NORTH

As JCI Malaysia Area Peninsular achieves rising growth in terms of membership and chapters, the area was split into JCI Malaysia Area Peninsular North and JCI Malaysia Area Peninsular Central South in 2012. In 2019, the word "peninsular" was dropped and henceforth be known as JCI Malaysia Area North and JCI Malaysia Area Central South as we know today. ONG TENG BOON JMW PMP AMP LLB (BOND) ACIARB (UK) BOND HOLDINGS SDN. BHD. CEO For approximately 64 years now, Junior Chamber International Malaysia (JCIM) through its many dedicated members have been serving the Malaysian community diligently. Since it’s inception back in 1954, JCIM has recruited and trained tens of thousands of young leaders to be involved in our continuous nation building process. At JCIM, members are continuously working hand in hand, supporting each other in continuously creating innovative training programs and networking platforms amongst each other and various stakeholders.

Every year, leaders elected (may it be national or LOM levels), and are given one year to lead. They would do so with full dedication and passion in bringing JCIM to greater heights.

For the year 2021, we observe many challenges which the world has never seen before. Continuous uncertainties with the pandemic and global movements have threatened and hindered the progress of mankind. However, at JCIM Area North we have witnessed what true leadership is all about. Under the stewardship for Area North Chairman, JCIM National Executive Vice President Matt Ngai and his team, they have managed to organise many wonderful programs, for example first ever Area North Virtual Academy, Area Training School, Social Media Program to Encourage Vaccination Registration, collaboration program with University Sains Malaysia and the Area North Virtual Convention. They are no easy feats.

By this, I would like to congratulate the whole Area North Team and members for your dedications. All your efforts are true testaments that our nation’s future are in the good hands of today’s youth.

LIM JIA DIC 2021 JCI TANJUNG BUNGA PRESIDENT MESSAGE Welcome to the 2021 Area North Convention. On behalf of JCI Area North and JCI Tanjung Bunga, I welcome you to this remarkable event where all JCI members gather, connect and formally assemble for discussion of and action on particular matters of common concern.

With the on-going pandemic, personal safety is a main concern for all. Therefore the convention team have decided to host this year's convention online. For those who are attending together with friends at a place physically, I would like to remind that please maintain social distance at all time and wash your hand frequently. Last year, we had the honor to host the first ever Area North Virtual Convention.

The team has no experience in hosting virtual convention and it was a great learning opportunity for all the convention team. We have since improvise the planning of the event and I hope that all of you will have an extraordinary experience and a memorable one.

First and foremost, I would like to congratulate the convention director, Bernard Ong on successfully organizing this convention twice. There were many challenges faced by him and the team, in delivering the indistinguishable experience to the participants compared to physical events.

Secondly, I would like to convey my gratitude to the Area Chair, Matt Ngai for the help and guidance throughout the preparation.

Thirdly, my sincere gratitude also goes to all those who helped in this convention.

Tanjung Bunga

BRIEF HISTORY A Heritage In Its Own Right It started with the idea towards the extension of a Tanjung Bunga chapter by the Penang Jaycees evolved from a gotong-royong project back in 1983. In September 1984, a pro tem committee was formed headed by Mr. Han Oo Kwang. In 16th October 1984, Kelab Jaycees Tanjong Bungah, Pulau Pinang was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS). The Charter Night was held in 1985 with JC Han Oo Kwang installed as its Charter President at the Orchard Sun Hotel.

Since then, the chapter have groomed leaders, organized impactful projects, won awards and undergone multiple transformation to stay true to the JCI purpose to develop young leaders for a changing world. JCI Tanjung Bunga is committed to advance the JCI Vision, Mission and Creed and make our world a better place.

We, JCI Tanjung Bunga, picked a floral theme for this annual convention. I like to congratulate our Convention Director Bernard Ong, 2021 Local President Lim Jia Dic and all members for making this happen. Not once, but twice.

Being the 2020 Local President of JCI Tanjung Bunga, I was part of our team that witnessed a virtual convention due to COVID-19. I’m happy that we learned how to cope with the challenge and manage our role of presenting ANC to all of you as your hosting local organization.

We appreciate the willing and continuous support by both groups of our 2020 and 2021 Area North Committee. They were of great help to JCI Tanjung Bunga and we thank our leaders for your thoughtful contributions every so often last two years.

Regretfully, we are yet again forced to participate in the 2021 JCIM Area North Convention virtually. This, however, does not equate to a virtual experience. Every challenge represents an equal opportunity for betterment, and adapting to the new norm proves to be a worthy opponent.

JCI Senator Milton Lim Sou Shing Immediate Past Area Chairperson cum Awards Chairperson It is my honor to be invited to pen a few words in the 2021 JCIM Area North Convention souvenir magazine.

This will be my final message to the Area Convention souvenir magazine as Area Committee. I would like to say thank you to JCI for giving me this wonderful experience and journey. I can't imagine what my life would be if I missed out in joining JCI in year 2012. Next year will be my last year as a JCI member and I will be moving on to another journey, I wish every blue bird member especially new member to enjoy your JCI journey; be open minded and keep improving yourself and try be the best leader you could ever be in JCI. You won’t regret it.

As the Awards Chairperson, I would like to encourage all the Local Presidents in Area North to introduce and promote the Area Incentive Awards to your members and encourage them to nominate themselves. Award is a great way to recognize your member’s hard work and effort and to promote your Local Organizations success. This will in turn help to motivate your members to continue their journey in JCI. Remember, a person who feels appreciated will always do more than what is expected.

I would like to convey my congratulations to JCI Tanjung Bunga and CD Bernard Ong for successfully conduct yet another Convention. It is amazing that you are the first LO to conduct our convention virtually in JCIM Area North history, you guys are awesome!
