JCI Malaysia National President Warmest greetings to all JCI Malaysia members!

It is with great pleasure that we present to you the 1st JCI Malaysia e-Pemimpin for 2021.

Ever since stepping into the office along with my National Board of Directors, it has been a very colorful journey. The new set of challenges during the pandemic helps each of us grow better resiliency as we serve and steer the organization to the right path.

The National Officers have been busy implementing their action plans for 2021, and one of the most significant events is the National Vice President (NVP) Dialogues through physical and virtual platforms. Also, JCI Malaysia website is being revamped with added new features. Two NBOD meetings were conducted, followed by the National Officers Trainings, Executive Meetings, Leadership Summit and Asia Pacific National Meeting before we hit the 1st quarter of the year.

The new initiative of kicking start JCIM Enabling Program is the collaboration with Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC). JCI Malaysia has conducted 13 sessions of eSPO that place the plan of action to be realized and they also benefit the members in regards to their leadership positions.

Sincere congratulations to all the newly-installed Local Presidents and Board of Directors. Together with other National Officers, it is with pride that we are able to witness your installation ceremonies.

Technology has brought us closer during this pandemic. As such, JCI Malaysia encourages LOs’ effort and initiatives to be continued by creating impactful projects in the respective LOs’ community.

In conjunction with 2021 programs, respective Area Conventions will be held starting from Area Central South (23-25th April), Area North (30th April – 2nd May), Area Sarawak Convention (7th – 9th May), and lastly Area Sabah (21 – 23rd May). I am looking forward to meet with all fellow members at these Area Conventions either physically or virtually and I strongly urge all members to participate in your respective area convention. This is your opportunity to build network with other JCI members from various states, to attend trainings, as well as to strengthen your knowledge of the parliamentary procedures.

Lastly, my deepest gratitude to all Past National Presidents, JCI Senators and members for all your support, assistance and encouragement, as we continue to work and bring JCI Malaysia to greater heights.

The pandemic has hit us hard since early 2020. I therefore foresee that 2021 will still be a challenging year for most of us. However, I believe that our JCIM local organizations & members are very high-spirited & persistent. By supporting our 2021 National President Plan of Action – Enabling Leaders, let’s together Rebuild, Invest, Sustain & Evolve, JCIM can be a much stronger youth organization that represents the voice of our local community.

2021 JCI Malaysia National Publication Commission Chairperson It’s such an honor to be the Editor of 2021 JCI Malaysian e-Pemimpin. Quarterly e-Pemimpin connects JCI Malaysia members with information, upcoming activities and also recaps past events. e-Pemimpin showcases JCI Vision, JCI Mission & JCI Malaysia organization chart, to name a few.

This helps new members to easily understand what JCI is all about.

Definitely we know that during this global pandemic of Covid-19, we are still unable to host events like how we used to. Most of the events are done virtually. However, we hope that our JCIM Local Organizations can continue to keep the spirit

of JCI and to host events more creatively through online platforms to impact our local community.

Junior Chamber International 2021 FACT SHEET About Junior Chamber International: Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a global membership-based non-profit organization of young active citizens ages 18 to 40 who are dedicated to creating positive change in their communities. 2021 Junior Chamber International Malaysia FACT SHEET About JCI Malaysia Junior Chamber International Malaysia (JCI Malaysia) is a National Organization of the Junior Chamber International in Malaysia. JCI Malaysia was chartered in 1976 and is affiliated to Junior Chamber International (JCI), a global leadership development organization for young active citizens aged 18 to 40, founded in 1915 in St Louis, US by Henry Giessenbier. JCI Malaysia is managed by its National Board of Directors who are all volunteers, serving based on JCI’s “One Year to Lead” value.

Membership There are over 2400 members from 73 local organizations affiliated to JCI Malaysia, from Area North, Central South, Sabah and Sarawak. JCI membership is open to all nationalities, races and religions.

JCI Malaysia Leadership Summit is an event that is held yearly early of the year in order to kick start the new year. Due to the global pandemic, this year JCI Malaysia held the first ever Virtual Leadership Summit. We attracted over 400 young active citizens from all over Malaysia including 2021 JCI Malaysia National Officers, Local Presidents & Board Of Directors.

In the Leadership Summit, 2021 JCI Malaysia National President, JCI Senator Chew Hooi Mei enlightened the whole organization with 2021 JCI & JCI Malaysia Plan Of Action. This is to ensure everyone in the organization is aligned with the same direction. This year, we also invited guest speakers from overseas to share more on the latest JCI Rise & Action Framework in order to widen JCI Knowledge to all our members.

“ Your Best Year Yet ” These 2-day Virtual Academy attracted 112 young active leaders from 14 Local Organizations in Sarawak and 12 Local Organizations in Sabah. In order to deliver an effective academy, the host invited 12 experienced speakers from all over Malaysia to provide valuable knowledge and motivation to the members. The program management team together with the speakers led by Head Trainer JCI Senator Velvet Ooi prepared various ice-breaking sessions and practical activities to ensure the engagement and interaction among members were achieved during the training.

Hosted by JCI Entrepreneur Metropolitan (E-Metro), this annual event’s core objective is to prepare area north members for leadership opportunities and community work.

However, the setting was very different than previous years.

This year, we embrace Covid-19 and took it in stride with our first ever virtual academy. Our participants were inquisitive and creative, making this academy an experience of excellence.

They first clicked into a few ice-breaking events on 15th and 16th January. The intention was to group all the participants and get everyone acquainted with their teammates. This 2-day Pre-Academy started with a session on the Parliamentary Procedure before flipping into a pair of our official courses, JCIM Inspire and JCI Discover, the next day.

One week later, on 23rd and 24th January, our Area Academy took place in Zoom.

Head Trainer, Past National President JCI Senator Velvet Ooi, steered us towards a communicative and well-designed academy with her panel of trainers. We also witnessed both the introduction and installation of our 2021 JCI Malaysia Area North Committee.

Developing and joining our own virtual academy was not a fluke. If anything, 2021 Area North Academy was a meld of individual commitment, collective teamwork and stewardship delegation.

JCI Malaysia Area Central South (ACS) Academy is an annual event that enhances knowledge and essential skills to prepare members for their roles in managing local organizations, sharing the ACS Plan of Action and encouraging inter-Local Organization networking and collaboration to enhance bonding.

Due to the pandemic, the 2-days 1-night academy was hosted virtually by JCI Malaysia ACS Team and JCI South Key. With the slogan “Together We Rise”, the Trainers' Team had prepared several special modules and programs for the Academians.

The Trainers’ Team was led by Our Head Trainer, 2017 National President JCI Senator Nurul-Huda M Afandi, who was assisted by 2 Assistant Trainers:

2021 JCI Malaysia National Deputy President Ellen Lu and 2020 JCI Malaysia National Treasurer Viviane Tong. With four invited Guest Speakers: 2002 JCI Malaysia National President Velvet Ooi, 2019 JCI Malaysia National Secretary General Tan Wei Jian, 2021 JCI Malaysia National Skills and Development Commission Chairman Zelt Kueh and 2020 JCI Malaysia ACS Skills Development Director Zare Lee. In this year’s academy, we had a series of module to help our Academians to set their goal for this year, how to lead and manage their organisation, what JCI Protocol is, how to recruit and retent membership and how to host a virtual event. We also had a lot of interesting energiser activities and a virtualize picnic which bonded all the Academians. On 30th Jan 2021, all the Academians successfully hosted 2021 JCI Malaysia ACS Team Installation Night which only took 2 hours of preparation.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". The SDGs were set in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by 2030. They are included in a UN Resolution called the 2030 Agenda or what is colloquially known as Agenda 2030.

JCI Malaysia Moves in Action with SDGs Aligning the direction given by JCI HQ, we conduct SDG Workshops to educate the local organisations in applying the appropriate SDGs in their JCI RISE and also other projects that are carried out under each pillar.

On top of that, we are aiming to carry out the Sustainable Development Goals Summit in July 2021 with the aim to connect with corporate, government, NGOs and social entreprise that carry out their operations and projects by applying SDGs

Though the goals are broad and interdependent, two years later (6 July 2017) the SDGs were made more "actionable" by a UN Resolution adopted by the General Assembly. The resolution identifies specific targets for each goal, along with indicators that are being used to measure progress towards each target.

In line with JCI MISSION & VISION, We, create positive change by walk in schools and communities to promote this movement, cooperating with partners to enhance the public's knowledge to stop using plastic straws as there are always environmentally friendly alternatives. Our project also acts proactively to gather youth, F&B merchants, public to spread awareness and knowledge. We build a platform to share the idea behind why we started LastStrawJohor. This network will help shape the active citizens framework on facilitating the knowledge on impact of plastic straws and magnify the impact to the community.

Every Phua Chu Kang Action was submitted to Ocean Conservancy (International NGO) using Clean Swell App to record all the collected coastal rubbish. To date, PCK Action has cleaned up 9000 plastic pieces, 1000 glass bottles, 1340 cigarette butts, 4990 miscellaneous

rubbish, 252 plastic food containers, 152 straws & lids, 75 styrofoam containers, with a total of 551.61 kg.

Making Penang Breastfeeding Friendly MPBF initiative is advocating for supportive workplace conditions that enable breastfeeding, by developing and implementing a workplace accreditation scheme. This call for employers to create a breastfeeding-friendly workplace is supplemented with many actions such as

(1) promoting the availability of supportive healthcare system (2) ensuring that information and support for breastfeeding at the community level is in place (3) working towards enabling breastfeeding in public spaces and (4) ensuring full compliance with the Malaysian Code of Ethics for the Marketing of Infant Foods and Related Products.

Breastfeeding is one of the best investments in saving lives and improving the health, social and economic development of individuals and nations. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life, with continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond, with the introduction of nutritionally-adequate and safe complementary foods at 6 months.

Breastfeeding provides every child with the best possible start in life. It delivers health, nutritional and emotional benefits to both children and mothers. And it forms part of a sustainable food system. But while breastfeeding is a natural process, it is not always easy.

Mothers need support – both to get started and to sustain breastfeeding. Skilled counselling services can ensure that mothers and families receive this support, along with the information, the advice, and the reassurance they need to nourish their babies optimally. Breastfeeding counselling can help mothers to build confidence while respecting their individual circumstances and choices.

Counselling can empower women to overcome challenges and prevent feeding and care practices that may interfere with optimal breastfeeding, such as the provision of unnecessary liquids, foods, and breastmilk substitutes to infants and young children.

Skilled breastfeeding counselling can be provided by different actors including health care professionals, lactation counsellors and peer support providers, and in a variety of settings– in health facilities or clinics, through home visits or community programs, in person or remotely.
