HONORING OUR THIRTEEN

SUNDAY, MAY 21, 2023
Mark Karsch z”l moved to Rockland County with his wife Michelle z”l in 1972. He quickly established himself as a leader in the local business community and the Jewish community.
They moved to Orangeburg (subsequently moved to New City) and he did not understand why there was not a “Y” in the community. He felt there needed to be a place where Jews, young and old, could meet, socialize, learn, and further strengthen their Jewish roots. Unlike many people who merely talk about doing something. Mark made a commitment to himself and to the Jewish community that a “Y” would be established.
Mark asked his Rabbi at Orangetown Jewish Center why there was not a “Y” and Rabbi Krauss referred him to Allan Eisenkraft z”l who he said was working to form one. Mark led by example and he became the first president of the Rockland YM-YWHA. The “Y” began without a facility and then Mark and his partner Bob Silverman provided 6,000 square feet in their building and it became the first permanent home of the “Y”.
Following his presidency he became the president of the UJC/Federation now known as the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County while serving on the board of the New City Jewish Center.
Mark was all about commitment. He was married to his wife Michelle for 34 years until she passed away in 2006 and you could say he was “married” to his business partner Bob Silverman for more than 40 years. Together, they grew their business Cresco from a nine person company to a fourteen hundred person company.
Mark and Michelle had three children Adam, Jodi, and Evan. Mark passed away October 2, 2021 and was married to his second wife Debbie Karsch for 8 years. Mark lived for his family, children, grandchildren and of course his beloved New York Yankeees.
Allan graduated from Baruch College (CCNY) with a degree in business. He met Estelle in the Catskills and married soon afterward in 1962. They moved to Nanuet, NY to raise their family.
You might say that the JCC was conceived in Estelle and Allan’s living room more than 40 years ago when a group of Jewish leaders got together to discuss their idea for a Jewish Community Center in Rockland County. In the years that followed, Estelle & Allan’s enthusiasm and generosity never wavered.
Allan was the second and fourth President of the JCC serving on the Executive Board, Board of Directors, and the RJCC Board since inception. Allan’s involvement in Community service began soon after Estelle and he moved up to Rockland County from the Bronx with their family in 1970. He has held leadership positions with the Jewish Federation & Foundation of Rockland County, B’nai Brith Youth Organization, and the Nanuet Hebrew Center as Men’s Club President, where he was duly recognized as a Lifetime Board Member. Both Allan & Estelle are members of the Major Donor Society of HADASSAH hospital in Israel too. Allan was honored by Jawonio with the inaugural North Star Award recognizing him for over 35 years as an invaluable Board Member.
In his professional life, Allan retired in 2005 as CEO of Yonkers Industrial Development Corp. after over 50 years in the Real Estate profession. A CCNY graduate, Allan served as President of its School of Business Alumni Society, House Plan Alumni Society, and as Board Member of The City College Fund.
Allan Eisenkraft z”l passed away on August 5, 2022, at age 86. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Estelle and three beautiful daughters, Sharon Rappaport, Meryl Post (Jeff), and Debbie Rolan (Marc), grandchildren Brian (Gaia) and Josh (Marisa) Rappaport, Riley and Zach Post, Maya and Cooper Rolan, and great-granddaughter Nava Rappaport.
Arnie Garelick is a founding member of JCC Rockland. He served two years as president from 19911993. More importantly, he has always been available to lend his expertise and help. He has watched the JCC grow from infancy, and takes pride in what the JCC has become.
Arnie originally got involved in the beginning as the Jewish community was growing. He commented that it was critical for a “Y” to have a central address so that we could be a Jewish Community instead of a community of Jews“. As a builder and developer, he was extremely busy yet during his presidency at the JCC he was also president at New City Jewish Center where he has been an active member for many years. At New City Jewish Center, Arnie served as a member of the building committee and the board of directors and held offices as a trustee, and vice president before becoming president. He has been honored by UJA (Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland) and Israel Bonds.
Of all his involvements, one of the causes that is closest to his heart is Bayit Lepletot, a home for underprivileged and orphaned girls in Jerusalem.
Arnie donated two years of his time to oversee the construction of the Jewish Community Campus. In November, 2007 the Cornerstone at the Campus was dedicated to him for this effort.
In 2003 when Sue and Arnie were honored by the JCC with a community service award they shared that they had a vision for the JCC. They hoped to see the campus expand to include a complete child care facility, space for increased senior programming, a theater for speakers, shows and cultural events, a sports facility with a gym and pool, and a home where teens will come together socially and jewishly. “We see and we continue to dream” said Sue and Arnie at that time. Many of those dreams have come true and they continue to believe in the future.
Arnie has been married for 54 years to the love of his life, Sue and they have three children, Jamie, Jeremy and wife Samantha, and Carri and 8 amazing grandchildren. They also have six amazing grandchildren from their adopted daughter Nava and Inon in Jerusalem. They always say that they are truly blessed.
Steve Rosenzweig was born and raised in Spring Valley and he has spent a lifetime contributing to the Rockland community. His JCC presidencies ran from 1994 -1998 and again from 2014-2016, serving on the board for an incredible 32 years. Whether giving time to the Jewish Federation of Rockland County, where he also served on the board for over 20 years, or serving as a longtime supporter of his synagogue Temple Beth El, he has given generously—in time, money and spirit. He recognized early in his community involvement that a JCC, or at that time, a YM-YWHA, would benefit and welcome Jews of all levels of commitment, and provide a much-needed focus for a variety of social, educational, athletic and cultural activities for the entire community. Under his leadership during one of his stints as president, the JCC purchased its first permanent home on Route 45 in the town of Ramapo.
In addition to being one of the founding members of the JCC, he was very involved in the groundwork that went into building the Rockland Jewish Community Campus 16 years ago, which the JCC and many other Jewish organizations today call home.
Steve and Gwen were married in 1969. Steve had met his match, when it comes to community service. She has given her time to many past fundraisers for the JCC.
Steve’s daughter Stacey, is married to Marc Fromowitz, and has two children, Joshua 23 and Zachary 20, who have participated in the JCC’s sports programs, in JCC Maccabi and worked in the JCC’s camp. His daughter Felice is married to Jonathan Flitt. They have two sons, Jeremy 16 and Dylan 14 who are also active at their local JCC.
Steve was a principal owner of Kraft Hat, a manufacturer of men’s and women’s cloth hats for many years. They lived in Rockland County for 49 years and two years ago moved to Boca Raton, Florida. Steve enjoys his down time, relaxing on his boat where he lives in the summer, scuba diving, playing pickleball, spending time on the beach, eating ice cream and of course spending time with his grandchildren.
Steve still considers JCC Rockland his home and he and Gwen are committed financially long term to its continued growth.

Linda Russin was truly an accomplished leader in the Rockland Jewish community for the 32 years that she lived here with her husband Barry.
Over the years, she held leadership roles at Nanuet Hebrew Center, on the editorial board of the Rockland Jewish Reporter, Florence Melton Adult Mini School, Women’s Campaign of Jewish Federation of Rockland County, Jewish Community Campus Capital Campaign, and past board member, executive board member and vice president of Jewish Federation of Rockland County.
Linda has always had a passion for the work of the JCC and she began her service on the board in 1997. In 2000, she became the first woman president in the JCC’s history. Linda was known as the person who established the most successful fundraising concept in the JCC’s history, the annual Wall of Giving and as vice president of fundraising raised the bar for fundraising. Her presidency focused on improving the fiscal situation at the JCC and she ended her presidency with a balanced budget.
After Linda’s presidency, she took on a leadership role as a board member of JCC Association of North America, the umbrella organization for all JCC’s. In her 21 years on the national board, she has served on the executive committee and served as vice chair of the organization.
When the Rockland Jewish Community Campus was purchased in 2004, Linda took onthe responsibility of campaign president and led the most successful capital campaign helping to raise more than $13 million dollars for the new Campus. She and her husband Barry made a leadership gift and dedicated the Russin Fitness & Wellness Center. Linda is passionate about the important role that the JCC continues to play in the Rockland County community. Although she currently resides in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and New York City, she and Barry continue to support the JCC and she has continued to serve on the board as an honorary board member.
Linda
Barry was born in the Bronx and moved to Rockland County in 1967. After his junior year at Spring Valley High School, Barry was accepted to Harpur College at SUNY Binghamton and graduated from there in 1982 with a BA in Political Science. Barry attended Boston University School of Law where he was honored as a Paul J. Liacos Scholar and Edward Hennessy Scholar. He graduated cum laude, with a Juris Doctor degree in 1985 and immediately returned to Rockland County to practice law. Thirty-eight years later, Barry is the Senior Managing Partner of the multi-state law firm of Kantrowitz Goldhamer & Graifman which has been representing the people of Rockland and Bergen Counties for more than 4 decades.
Barry is a graduate of the first class of Leadership Rockland (1990-91.) He Joined the Board of the “Y” in 1996. It didn’t take long for him to join the Executive board, and he was president of the JCC from 2002-2004. At the end of his term with the JCC, Barry became President of the RJCC, the entity that owns the entire campus. Barry was a driving force in the acquisition, construction and development of the JCC’s new Campus in West Nyack. Barry later served for two years on the board of the national JCC Association which is the continental umbrella organization for the Jewish Community Center Movement.
Barry and his wife Sharon, an attorney who practices family law, provides mediation services, and is a court appointed attorney for children, have lived in New City for the last 23 years. Their son Daniel is a junior at the University of Maryland and their daughter Michelle is graduating from Clarkstown High School North and will soon be attending the School of Nursing at the University of Rhode Island. Barry’s oldest son, David, is the Athletic director of the Putnam Valley School District. David and his wife Jenna, a special education teacher in New York City, recently celebrated their son Mason’s first birthday. Barry’s older daughter, Melissa, lives in North Carolina where she and her husband Justin both work in finance. They welcomed a baby girl, Natalie this past November.
Barry credits his parents, Daisy and Walter for his dedication to the growth and success of the JCC. “My parents were always involved in the community and led, and continue to lead by example. Work hard, play hard and give back is what I was taught from a young age.“
I was born in Rockland County. From an early age my parents (z”l) instilled in me a passion for Judaism and the state of Israel. They were deeply involved in the New City Jewish Center, as well as a number of other Rockland County Jewish organizations At that time the Jewish community was growing rapidly and I clearly remember even as a young tween, attending social programs and activities in a few temporary makeshift Y’s ,while I heard my parents murmuring about individuals who were working diligently to put something permanent together for the community.
Years later Jay and I married and settled in Rockland, where the Jewish community was thriving. There were many forums for Jewish community building, including synagogues, day schools, an active federation with the famous Falafel the camel walkathon mascot, Hadassah, Israel Bonds , then Rockland Jewish Family Services , and the JCC Rockland, no longer a JCC without walls, but in a building on route 45. We chose to raise and educate our children in the wonderful Reuben Gittelman Hebrew day school. There were numerous opportunities for immersion and collaboration between the school and the many organizations working together to build a stronger community.
My involvement in a few of the Rockland Jewish organizations was truly a labor of love. It yielded an opportunity for me to learn from and collaborate with talented, dedicated individuals and community members who strove to make a difference in the Rockland County landscape.
At the time, the JCC continued to grow and expand its services and finally needed to search for a permanent home. At the JCC I had the privilege of getting to know a group of hard working visionaries and many generous individuals, both staff and lay leaders who were working to create a unique gathering place for new programs and services that families wanted and needed. I am grateful to have worked with many of them on the JCC and RJCC Boards during this exciting period of growth and the creation of the campus and all that it has to offer. I impart my heartfelt wishes for its continued success in the years ahead.
As Jay and I watch our grandchildren grow, we wish for them a community as warm, as welcoming and as impactful as the one where their parents were raised.
Steve Gold has been a community leader for many of his 30 years as a member of the Rockland community. Steve grew up in the Catskills in Fallsburg, NY. His parents, Ruth and Emanuel Gold, were Holocaust survivors. They had a very busy lifestyle as they worked their egg farm, but they always made time for Jewish causes and organizations. They instilled the importance of giving back and community in Steve.
He served for many years on the board of the Rockland County Holocaust Museum and Study Center, and New City Jewish Center.
Steve served on the board of JCC Rockland from 2001 through 2013, held the post of fundraising vice president, and became the president of the JCC in 2007. When the new Jewish Community Campus and JCC opened their doors in December of 2007, Steve stood proudly as president when Rubin Josephs affixed the mezuzah on the front door.
In 2012, he co-chaired the JCC Maccabi Games opening ceremony at Rockland Community College. As part of hosting the JCC Maccabi Games, Steve led a unified countywide and JCC Rockland effort to attempt to secure a minute of silence in memory of the Israelis murdered at the Olympics in 2012. He traveled to London, England for a press conference. Steve attended a meeting with the president of the International Olympic Committee where the minute was denied but his leadership helped to secure the minute at the Olympics in Tokyo in 2021. Steve looks back proudly and that history was changed through this effort. Steve has been honored twice previously by the JCC, first in 2002 as JCC’s Man of the Year and in 2010 with his wife, Helene.
Steve has been a longtime board member of the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County.
From 2017 through 2019, Steve chaired the Federation’s Community Relations Council (CRC). He and his colleagues worked vigilantly to seek out anti-Semitism, address vandalism incidents, and racist and hate-filled comments. CRC members worked with other religious groups, community organizations, government officials, educators, and the media to inform and educate. They initiated dialogues to bring greater understanding and tolerance to our county.
For the last three years, he has served as co-president of the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County.
Steve is the lead partner of Peace of Stage, transforming the original main stage from the 1969 Woodstock festival into unique 50thanniversary collectibles. He also owns Yesteryearwear.com, a web store that features iconic logged merchandise for the height of the Catskills borsht belt era.
Steve and Helene have two sons, Griffin, married to Emma and Austin.
Joel Zbar has never sought the limelight. As an Executive Board member and past treasurer of the JCC, he preferred working in the background. But when Steve Gold, JCC Rockland’s then president became ill in 2009, Joel stepped into the role , serving for more than two years as the president and one year as co-president with Pam Greenspan.
Joel has served as a board member for more than 20 years and in a weak moment actually came back to serve on the board after he had to take a year off for term limits. That is what can happen when you are friends with David Kirschtel, the CEO of the JCC.
Joel first became involved in the JCC through coaching his kids sports teams, and he wanted to give back to the community. In 2010, he traveled to Israel for the first time, on the JCC’s first leadership trip to the Jewish homeland.
Prior to his involvement in the JCC, he served as treasurer of Orangetown Jewish Center for 12 years and has always been involved in support of Surprise Lake camp where he met his wife Anne as a teenager who he has been married to for 42 years.
Joel is a partner at Eisner Advisory Group and leads the New York Family Office practice.
Pam Greenspan has been involved in Rockland County’s Jewish community since she joined ORT when she moved to Rockland in 1984. Since that time she has been President of Hadassah’s Ohr Chadash chapter, President of JCC Rockland, and is currently the Israel Bonds Women’s Division chair for Rockland County. Pam was honored by Israel Bonds with the Young Leadership award in 1999 and by JCC Rockland in 2008. As President of the JCC from 2011-2013, she presided over the JCC Macabbi games. She helped garner support for a minute of silence for the Munich 11. As a Board member she played a leadership role in the development and opening of the Deborah Koenig Early Childhood Center.
Pam is a doctor of Audiology with a private practice in Briarcliff Manor. She is married to Fred and they have three wonderful children, Daniel, married to Jen, Rachel married to Brendan, and Jared. She has three beautiful grandchildren, Olivia, 5, Natalie 2 1/2, and Benjamin 1 1/2.
Mitch served on the JCC Rockland’s Board of Directors board from 2010-2022 and only departed due to term limits. He was president of the board from 2016-2019. Mitch currently serves as the Chair of the Rockland Jewish Community Campus Capital Campaign.
Mitch also shows his passion for Judaism through his work at his synagogue, Orangetown Jewish Center (OJC). He currently serves on the OJC Budget and Finance Committee and has been the OJC Youth Chairperson since 2001.
As if his volunteering is not enough of his day, Mitch is a Managing Partner and founder at Altium Wealth Management LLC.
Mitch is married to his wonderful wife Robin and they reside in New City. They have three wonderful children, Morgan, Mia and Michael.
Mitch in an attorney and holds a Masters Degree in the Science of Financial Services. He is a Certified Financial Planner, a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy and has a degree in Exit Strategy Planning.
Jeffrey Degen is the immediate past president of the JCC, having handed over the metaphorical gavel to Aimee last year. He has always been involved with Jewish organizations--attending programs at his local synagogue from elementary school on, and serving on the NewYork Regional Board of the National Conference of Synagogue Youth while he was in High School. Though retired from the JCC Board, he continues to be involved in Jewish life in Rockland county, serving on the New City Jewish Center Board and Youth Committee.
The JCC and his synagogue are equally important to Jeffrey who believes that, for a Jewish community to thrive, there must be opportunities for those who want a more formal religious affiliation, and also more secular Jews who seek to be involved with the Jewish community and Jewish programs without going to a synagogue.
Jeffrey lives in New City with his wife Jill of 22 years, also a past honoree and very active in the Jewish Community, and with their two sons: Zach, 17, who aspires to run a non-profit children’s theater, and Ben, 14 who intends to be a chemist.
JCC Rockland is dedicated to the enrichment and continuity of Jewish life and to the preservation and celebration of our rich heritage. The center shall strengthen individual awareness and connection to the Jewish community, the state of Israel, and the community at large through recreational, physical, educational, social and cultural programs.
Today, we honor our 13 past presidents at JCC Rockland’s 35th Founders Celebration. These incredible leaders had a vision about what a Jewish community center could look like in Rockland – and we are the lucky beneficiaries of their capacity to imagine and execute.
Our past presidents, Mark Karsch z”l, Allan Eisenkraft z”l, Arnie Garelick, Steve Rosenzweig, Paul Adler, Linda Russin, Barry Kantrowitz, Brenda Lender, Steve Gold, Joel Zbar, Pam Greenspan, Mitch Brill, and Jeff Degen, each faced unique challenges during their terms, but with their perseverance and commitment, they helped bring us to where we are today.
It may be hard to believe, but in 35 years, these Presidents steered the JCC from a “Y” without walls, to our first facility with only 6,000 square feet, to an elementary school, to an office building, to a 26,000 square foot unfinished medical building, and finally to our present home, a 135,000 square foot Campus in West Nyack. Over that time we changed from a “Y” to the JCC. We are honored to share the Campus with the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County, Rockland Jewish Family Service, and Israel Bonds. We are now in our 16th year in West Nyack and the JCC continues to expand its programming and work on engaging the broader community.
In 1988, the JCC had 200 memberships. We hit a high of 2,600 pre Covid-19, and after dropping to 1,799 during the pandemic, we are back over 2,150 memberships. Our activities and offerings continue to grow and evolve to meet our community’s needs. The Deborah Koenig Early Childhood Center opened just 9 years ago with 18 children in 3 classrooms. Today there are 118 children in 11 classrooms and a long waiting list. In the past 10 years our JCC Rockland camps has grown from 40 children to over 535 children each day. We owe a debt of gratitude to our past presidents who inspired the JCC to expand into new ventures and who helped guide the growth of these programs.
As most of you know, there have been many years that finances were extremely tight. We are especially grateful today for the Past Presidents that guided the organization through those most stressful times. Their leadership and generosity made sure that we survived so that we can continue to serve and support the Jewish and greater community in Rockland.
Thank you to all of you who supported the journal. You have honored our past presidents by surpassing our initial, stretch and super stretch goals. We are proud to announce that the journal raised more than $250,000.
There are still many challenges ahead. In honor of our past presidents and their families, and with the support of our future presidents, the board and the community, we remain focused on the founders’ vision to provide a full service JCC for the Jewish and greater community of Rockland County. We are proud that we serve people of all ages and interests and have created a place that promotes our Jewish core values of physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth. We are so grateful for our Past Presidents that supported the mission of the JCC to help members of our community reach their full potential. We literally would not be here without all of them.
B’Shalom,

ANNE ZBARWe are extremely grateful for the Jewish community that the JCC provided during our childhood. We grew up in a town and attended schools in which Jews were few and far between. Because of this, it was important to our parents for us to be able to meet other Jews close to home and the JCC provided us this opportunity. Our parents encouraged us to be a part of the community by assuming active leadership roles, taking us to JCC events, and enrolling us in the JCC’s sports leagues and Maccabi Games. This was particularly evident with our Dad who coached each of our JCC basketball and football teams. Aside from our Dad’s perk of showing off his 3-point shot at our weekly basketball practices, for us as players, the leagues forged a connection to a relatable and welcoming peer group in Rockland, which would not have been possible without the coaches who volunteered their time week after week and season after season. Also for the Maccabi Games, due to our family’s passion for sports, traveling to cities across the country to play soccer while simultaneously representing our Jewish community was extremely special.
We have always been proud of our Dad’s involvement in the JCC and his term as President because without the leaders who oversee the organization, families like ours would not have had similar opportunities to connect with other Jewish families in Rockland.
Dad, we love you very much and are so proud for your ongoing support of and contributions to the JCC.

Congratulations on this great honor! As kids, I don’t think we understood or fully appreciated why this work that you didn’t get paid for was so important to you. As adults, we certainly appreciate and admire it now.
Your dedication to the JCC and Jewish causes as a whole have shaped our family by providing a connection to Judaism that we may not have otherwise had. The things that you have accomplished and the countless lives that your hard work has touched is truly inspirational and amazing. We’re so proud of you!
Mazel Tov!
We’re proud to see you being recognized for your work on behalf of the JCC. All the planning, meetings, and hours in front of the computer helped create a legacy that lives on in Rockland County’s Jewish community, helping to ensure a vibrant space for the generations that followed us.
Thank you for being such a wonderful mother and grandmother, and for leaving a lasting imprint through your good work. We’re delighted to be here celebrating you among the thirteen visionaries of JCC Rockland.
And all the 2023 honorees, on their hard work and dedication to JCC Rockland
BARBARA & LARRY ROSENZWEIG & OUR FAMILY
We are honored to support your dedication and the great work of JCC Rockland.
To many more years of continued success in Rockland County
We are grateful for all your contributions to JCC Rockland and the greater Jewish Community.
Here’s all you need to know about tonight’s honoree, as compiled by the guys who know him best:
Mitchel Brill• Was accepted early admission to the Eagle Scouts!
• Pays his taxes on March 15th!
• Rotates other people’s tires!
• Worked his way through college as a notary public!
• Crosses his t’s, dots his i’s, and uses a protractor to make his k’s!
• Uses his turn signals when exiting his driveway!
• Actually likes the taste of kale!
• Thinks Warren Buffett is financially reckless!
• Prepares for triathlons by doing biathlons!
• Lives entirely off the prudent investments he made with his bar mitzvah money!
• Racked up zero credit card reward points in 2022!
• Backs up his backup hard drives!
• Always gets his annual flu shot on his way to vote!
• Keeps an abundance of caution in a dry, safe place!
• The guys from Lowes stop by his house to ask him how to do stuff!
Let’s put it this way: If Dudley Do-Right, Ned Flanders, or Bob Villa were Jewish, they’d be Mitchell Brill. But because we’ve got him on our team, Mitch puts his powerful probity and can-do skills to work for JCC Rockland. And as anyone who knows him well can tell you, Mitch Brill is an upstanding person you can rely on.
Congratulations Mitch! You will always be the guy we turn to bail us out from a tight spot.
Love, Craig, Jon, Mark, Mike & Rich
Before he was the JCC’s sober, responsible adult-in-the-room, Mitch Brill was our designated driver.
