THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF

IS PROUD TO HONOR

RECIPIENT OF THE ESTELLE & ALLAN EISENKRAFT Z”L FOUNDERS AWARD

FOur Honoree OUR "STAR OF DAVID" KIRSCHTEL

or the past twenty-five years, David Kirschtel has served as the chief executive officer of JCC Rockland, overseeing the expansion of the J from a small “mom-andpop”-style organization into an $8 million operation in West Nyack, New York. Today, the J serves the Jewish and broader Rockland communities through its Russin Fitness & Wellness Center; the Deborah Koenig Early Childhood Center; a bustling summer camp; the Chazen Center for Adult Life; and many other cultural, social and educational programs for all ages. For the last three years David has additionally served as the General Manager for JCC of Northern New Jersey.

Among his proudest achievements is his work on the Minute of Silence for the Munich 11, the Israeli athletes and coaches murdered by Palestinian terrorists at the 1972 Olympics in Germany. Working with Munich widows Ankie Spitzer and Ilana Romano David galvanized the JCC and Rockland communities behind this effort, which reached around the globe. In 2012, they presented a 112,000-signature petition to the head of the International Olympic Committee asking for a minute of silence remembering the Israelis at the 2012 London Olympiad. Although that effort did not result in recognition, IOC leadership memorialized the 11 Israelis within the Olympic Village in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. In 2021, the Olympics finally held a minute of silence in Tokyo Japan.

David began his work at the JCC as a member of the board of directors in 1992. He moved into his professional role at the non-profit after working in business and for himself for many years. Seeking a change, he took inspiration from the example of his late brother-in-law, Leonard Zakim, who had served as head of the Anti-Defamation League in New England and was known for building bridges between communities. Raised in Newton, Massachusetts. David received his bachelor’s degree from Bentley University (then College) in 1981. He and his wife, Elayna live in New City and are parent’s to Aaron and his wife Michal, Jason and his wife Erica, and Naomi.

A Message from THE JCC CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Dear Friends:

It is really extraordinary for me to be honored for 25 years of service to JCC Rockland. That’s a quarter of a century! Just think about how much the world has changed since the turn of the century: The internet was still shiny and new; there was no worrying about promoting things (or not) on social media; smart phones didn’t exist and I certainly wasn’t driving an electric hybrid.

So of course, the JCC has also changed in that time. We have moved, and adapted so that the J could become the organization we once only imagined.

Being at this juncture has, of course, given me cause to reflect on my tenure at the J. And while this is not the first time I’ve been honored, each time in the past has been at a critical moment in JCC Rockland’s evolution. And while that path ahead wasn’t always certain or defined, I always had confidence that working together with the community, we could achieve great things.

I was first honored in 2007 after serving as executive director for seven years. The organization was still the JCC-Y and we were in the process of building the Rockland Jewish Community Campus. “The Future is Now” was the theme and our bold vision was to not only move from a 26,000-square-foot building to our current 135,000-square-foot campus, but to also become the central welcoming address for the entire Jewish community. With your support we got it done.

When we then celebrated the JCC’S 25th anniversary in 2013, we did so amidst a whirlwind of activity and excitement. We had just hosted the JCC Maccabi Games, which brought 1,200 teens to Rockland County to compete in the Olympic-style competition. Hand-in-hand with this effort, our Minute of Silence campaign drew international attention to the failure of the International Olympic Committee to appropriately recognize the murder of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics. To say that some were skeptical we could pull off either of these things, much less in the same year, is putting it mildly. But again, with community support, we did.

Things did not always stay so rosy. In 2014, our bank at the time told us to find another lender — despite our never having missed a loan payment! We were desperate. With community support, and that of the Koenig, Garelick and Iser families, who agreed to guarantee a portion of our loan, Orange Bank & Trust agreed to loan us $9 million. They were the only bank in the country to come forward! To this day, we are incredibly grateful for their community spirit and their belief in the JCC & Jewish Community Campus.

Three years later, we honored Orange Bank & Trust, along with Ilse and John Lang and myself. The Lang’s have always been here for the JCC, and their deep support is essential. John Lang was sent to England on the kindertransport after the Nazis unleashed Kristallnacht in 1938. John understands that strong Jewish organizations build strong Jewish identity, are essential to a vibrant Jewish community and serve as a bulwark against antisemitism.

Which brings us to tonight. Thank you for honoring my 25 years as CEO of JCC Rockland — and helping to raise more than $1 million! Unbelievable! The real honor has not been the events and journals, but the privilege to steer such a phenomenal organization and work with so many dedicated and talented professionals and lay people over my career here.

I could not have done this without the enduring support of my wife, Elayna, and my family, who have put up with more night meetings and interrupting phone calls than anyone should ever have to endure. I turned 65 last summer and plan to work another five years — who knows, maybe you’ll be honoring me a fifth time when I retire?

Most of you know that my email signature includes the English and Hebrew for “anything is possible.” But before I added that beneath my signature, I signed off with Theodore Herzl’s “If you will it, it is no dream.” The JCC was once only a dream for this community, but with a great deal of vision, hard work and perseverance, we have willed it into being — a magnificent place in which we should all take pride.

And we did it together. If we continue to dream, who knows where we will be in another 25 years.

Thank you.

A Message from THE JCC PRESIDENT

Dear Friends:

I have had the pleasure to write a number of these letters to the community, but this year is different in a good way, as we get to honor my friend, and outstanding community leader, David Kirschtel, for his 25 years of service.

I am honored that David asked me to serve the JCC and the community for a second (and final) time. I could never say no to David.

We are fortunate to have a strong and passionate leader in David. His email signature says it all “Hakol efshari, everything is possible”. And everything is possible. Under his leadership, the JCC has become a premier organization and the central Jewish address for the Jewish Community and the greater community as well.

Under David’s charge:

• Our Deborah Koenig Early Childhood Center has grown from 18 children when it opened 11 years ago to enrolling more than 115 children next September.

• The Chazen Center for Adult Life is a home away from home for hundreds of seniors daily.

• The Russin Fitness & Wellness Center and Eisenkraft Gymnasium serves more than 3,000 individuals.

• Our JCC Rockland summer camps serve more than 450 children each day every summer.

• Honoring David, this Founder’s Celebration is by far our most successful event in JCC history, raising more than $1,100,000!

Even with all the great things happening at the JCC, our job is not done. We still need to ensure the long-term future of the JCC and the Jewish Community Campus. When you are called, and you will be called, please join me and so many others in our community, with a resounding “Yes.”

Our vision statement “Welcoming all into the heart of Jewish life in Rockland County” was crafted with all of you in mind. Thank you for supporting David’s “Silver Anniversary” and the JCC.

With appreciation & admiration...

Growth

The first Wall of Giving is unveiled with $80,000 in contributions all to support the growth of the J. The standout “WE ARE ONE” Hanukkah festival held at Rockland Community College united 8,000 community members and raised $20,000 for Israel’s Emergency Fund, demonstrating strong community support and solidarity.

Under the new leadership of Executive Director David Kirschtel, the newly renamed JCC-Y of Rockland launched impactful programs like Youth Sports and the Chazen Senior Center, serving both youth and seniors.

Rockland Jewish Community Campus, a home for Jewish Federation of Rockland, Rockland Jewish Family Service and the JCC-Y. To support this growth, the ‘RJCC’ launched a $20 million Capital Campaign, fueled by five major seven-figure gifts.

Memory Lane Momentum

In addition, the first Jewish Film Festival attracted 3,000 attendees, and 65 local teens participated in the Maccabi Games alongside 6,000 others from around the world.

Milestone

The new Jewish Community Campus grand opening on December 2, 2006 was a historic event, drawing over 5,000 attendees despite a driving snowstorm. During that month, 275 membership units were sold, and the dedication of the Eisenkraft Gymnasium marked another significant milestone for the community.

The JCC-Y officially rebranded as JCC Rockland, marking a new chapter in its growth. An exciting JCC Dinner Dance was held at The Rockleigh honoring Lynn and Shelly Goldstein for their major philanthropic support and the Community Service Award presented to Steven Silverstein. By June, the center had over 1,900 fitness membership units, representing nearly 3,800 members, showcasing its expanding impact in the community.

Memory Lane

The JCC initiated a world-wide effort along with their new dear friends Ankie Spitzer & Ilana Romano and global Jewish organizations for the Minute of Silence Campaign, gathering over 100,000 signatures to honor the Munich 11 victims with a moment of silence at the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

Resilience

The Virtual Founders Celebration brought together supporters in a new, innovative way, showcasing the JCC’s commitment to connection and growth. In September, the campus safely reopened in innovative ways, thanks to a dedicated staff, task force, and Board of Directors who went above and beyond to make it possible.

For the first time, JCC Rockland was forced to shut their doors. Quickly adapting to the challenges of COVID-19, they reimagined serving the community virtually.

All Day at the J became a full-day program that provided students with a safe, supportive space for learning and connection during remote schooling from the pandemic. The Founder’s Celebration entitled “New Beginnings” joyfully resumed again outdoors honoring Lisa Green, Judge Alfred & Doris Renee Weiner and Elena Heydt.

Revitalization

Sadly, on October 7th we once again had to pivot. Together with the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County, we rallied, we mourned, and today continue to support Israel and one another.

Following the challenges of COVID-19, we continued to rebuild with strength and purpose—adapting to new needs and finding innovative programs and services to serve our community. In 2023, our Founders Celebration honored our 13 Past Presidents, recognizing the leadership that shaped our path forward.

A trip down memory lane…

The early years

Celebrating with us

One of many honorings

We are so grateful…

David, our father saw so much promise in you 25 years ago. Today, you should be proud. You’ve grown the Y on 45 to the J where people stay. Our parents’ smiles were beaming underneath their masks when they made their last payment to the JCC and handed it to you in person. You inspired them just as much if not more--than they inspired you. As Mom would say, you are a true friend, a mensch, who has done a yeoman’s job. Here’s to the next new member…they won’t know what hit ‘em. Mazel tov, David, on this well-deserved honor.

All our love, Sharon, Meryl and Debbie

What a professional and personal achievement! So much to be grateful for and so much to be proud of!

Through the years you have exhibited extraordinary qualities of wisdom, leadership, compassion, perseverance, courage and strength. Your ideals and actions always spoke volumes. Your determination to reach your goals was admired and appreciated. You’ve been a role model and have earned the respect of your colleagues and community.

Through the many programs at the “J” for pre-schoolers through seniors and everything in between, you have been able to educate, entertain and inspire.

You have illuminated hearts, enlightened minds and brought joy and stimulation to so many.

This honor is a testimony to all that you have accomplished and we are all so very thankful and appreciative! Mazel Tov!

With respect, admiration and friendship,

DAVID, 25 YEARS AT THE JCC

Time moves so swiftly—can it really be twenty-five years?

Let’s take a look back, through laughter and tears. Before JCC Rockland, it was the JCC-Y, Before that LDM, CMS, and BFI.

It’s been quite the journey, in the blink of an eye, Through lows and highs—it’s been you and I.

A beacon of light in this community’s heart, With vision and purpose, you’ve led from the start.

A builder, a dreamer, no challenge too tall, You’ve made the JCC a home for us all.

Through struggle and triumph, you’ve stood strong and true, In the darkest of times, the spark was still you. A moment of silence, for the brave and the lost, You lifted their voices, no matter the cost.

Our children, now grown, found their roots here too Aaron, Jason, Naomi, with memories true. Now Mia, Michal, and Erica too, This family is stronger because of you.

From Route 45’s modest start, to this bright, shining star, Look how far we’ve come, how proud we are. Through thick and thin, hand in hand, we’ve been, Celebrating each milestone, every win.

And soon I’ll retire, my own chapter’s near, Though I started first, you’ve always been here. We’ve built this together, with passion and grace Who could’ve imagined we’d come to this place?

I am so proud of all that you do, And grateful for this life I share with you. With love and pride, I raise my voice You are my partner, my heart, and my choice.

I love you,

DEAR ELAYNA,

It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 40 years since that Jewish singles dance at the Marriott Long Wharf in Boston, the night everything began. From that moment on, our journey together has been extraordinary. And now, as I reflect on 25 years as CEO of the JCC, what stands out most isn’t the milestones or achievements, it’s you.

In what feels like the blink of an eye, we’ve built a life grounded in love, partnership, and purpose. You are the love of my life. We’ve created an incredible family together, both at home and within the walls of the JCC. Every step of the way, it’s never been about me, but we. Us as a family. Us as a community.

We’ve been fortunate that as we worked to grow the JCC for others, it also became a home for our own children. Youth sports, summer camp, Israelis from Hod Hasharon, the JCC Maccabi Games, our kids thrived here, and so did we. You gave so much of yourself, first as a volunteer, and then, for the past 18 years, as a site leader at New City Elementary School through the SACC and BTB programs. Your dedication left an imprint on generations, and now, with Mia at the Deborah Koenig Early Childhood Center, that legacy continues.

Picture for David’s side (right side of spread)

You may be retiring from your role at the JCC, but the work isn’t finished. In the years ahead, I remain committed to securing the future of this place we’ve helped shape. I think often about how we started, a 26,000 square foot dream on Route 45 that seemed impossible to afford. But we didn’t give up, and instead, we ended up with 135,000 square feet in West Nyack, supported by a community that believed in us, because we believed in it.

I carry that same resolve, inspired by people like Ankie Spitzer, Ilana Romano, and of course, the State of Israel. Never give up. From Jason’s Bar Mitzvah on Masada, to Aaron and Michal’s Israel foundation, to Erica and Jason and Naomi, our love for our homeland, and for our people, is woven into everything we do.

And through all of it, it always comes back to you. As Jerry Maguire famously said, “You complete me.”

I love you more than words can say. And as Lenny taught us, Hakol efshari. Everything is possible.

Forever yours,

David

Dad, for the past 25 years, you didn’t just lead, you inspired, and made believers out of us all. Since the very beginning, this was never just a job, it was a way of life. We’ve been there through it all, the late-night phone calls, endless meetings, the community events, not just watching you work, but growing up inside the very place you poured yourself into.

WITHOUT YOU…

I’d have to write a book to express my gratitude for the JCC Rockland - A place where my kids and I called home for 9 yrs.

Without you David, we may not have survived some very rough times - but as my dad taught me “a smooth sea never made a good sailor” and we are a family of winners and strong sailors - my gratitude runs deeper than I can express. So thank you from the bottom of my heart. The trials and tribulations of a person’s journey and growth are often met with fierce resistance and pain.

Without you David and the JCC as a backbone - we would have had no footing. Communities are what sustains us. You’ve built a beautiful one that embraces all Jews with love. Mazel Tov to all your hard work David!

With love,

Thank you, David

THERE ARE NO WORDS...

Big enough to capture the gratitude we feel—but we’ll try. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. You have been so much more than a familiar face at the JCC—you’ve been a light, a constant, and a friend who’s become like family. You created a space where everyone feels seen, cared for, and safe. Thanks to you, our children have a second home—one filled with joy, kindness, and belonging.

It’s not just the programs or the events—it’s the heart behind it all. Your heart. The way you’ve poured your spirit into the JCC has left an imprint not just on the building, but on all of us. They call you the Star of David, but we think that falls short. You’re not just the star—you’re the heart.

With endless love and appreciation,
