What Will the International Situation and Foreign Policy Look Like After COVID-19?

He also stressed the need for independent promotion of foreign policy through capacity building.

He started the lecture by explaining the current world in which time and space have converged and the time and cost required for long-distance movement and communication have been greatly reduced because of the development of technology. He said that this led to the rising of the political and military tensions within and between countries, and COVID-19 exacerbated tensions between regions. He also added that in this situa-

n April 13, the Jeollabuk-do Center for International Affairs (JBCIA) held the first outreach understanding class for international affairs at Jeonju Yuil Girl’s High School.

On that day, Jeong Ki-jong, former ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Qatar, delivered a lecture on the topic of “Changes in foreign policy and the international situation after COVID-19” and emphasized the following two points.

ife amidst a pandemic has changed the way we travel. Travelers tend to stay local for a weekend getaway to get fresh air, sunshine, exercise, and help their mental health — and put a little money into the local economy.

Jeongeup has many cool places to visit for local travelers, including a musical fountain near Naejang Mountain. You’ve definitely heard of the majestic fountains of Bellagio and the Magic Fountain of Montjuic, but now you can add Naejang Mountain Water Park in Jeongeup to the list.

Its fountain has 14 displays such as a water screen, weeping fountain, heart fountain, and fog fountain. The songs change depending on the time of the performance. The fountain plays Korean pop music from the 70s and 80s, children's songs, movie soundtracks,

and more. The fountain performs regularly in summer from May to October. The show is about 30 minutes long and it is usually best enjoyed from 5 p.m. onwards.

The park is so big and there are other facilities that people can enjoy while waiting for the colorful and lively fountain show. There’s the leisure camping ground, family entertainment center, and a stage where concerts and performances are held.

There are also bike rentals, space to practice in-line skating, a convenience store, free parking, restrooms, and a lot more.

for English-speaking attendees. At the same time, other events had no English translations, and some films, especially in the Korean Cinema section, featured poor translations that distracted from the quality of the film.

Since 2000, JIFF has been introducing South Korean audiences to both domestic and international works, especially films with experimental production or contents.

This year, a total of 217 films from 57 countries were screened as a part of the festival. Though the festival only expected 60 international guests and 2,000 domestic guests, about 50,000 attendees joined the festival. As a result, it was easy to feel the festival vibe, in both good ways and bad. For example, the Q&A sessions were entertaining and featured live translations

Despite having attended JIFF since 2018, I was most disappointed with this years’ festival and I felt an exclusionary feeling which I had never experienced before. I think that this festival is “international” in that it invites international films and includes international guests to be members of the jury. Except for this, the festival is designed for a Korean audience, and it is not always going to result in a positive experience for non-Korean attendees. One South African who attended the festival was especially disappointed in the opening ceremony, which included a comedic rendition of the classic Disney song “Circle of Life” from the film “The Lion King.” To some foreign audience members, this ceremony seemed to mock other cultures and use stereotypes that are a part of non-Korean culture in a negative way. For a festival that highlights films exploring feminist, queer, or other experiences, this ceremony was uncomfortable to say the least, and even offensive to some.

hat makes a festival worthwhile? For Jeonju International Film Festival, or JIFF, it’s the ability to mix and mingle with the creators and actors working hard to produce incredible independent films for audiences around the world.

Despite the continuation of the pandemic, for 2022, JIFF reopened a fully in-person experience, including question-and-answer sessions with the audience. Sung Moon, a programmer of JIFF since 2019, was interviewed for this article and agrees that one of the main benefits of the festival is the chance to interact with members of the film industry.

Thankfully, the negative experience of some audience members was not felt amongst international guests of the festival. Writer, director, and actor Kit Zauhar, whose film “Actual People” premiered in Asia at the festival, said the staff was really wonderful and that JIFF was “probably one of the most plannedout and organized fests” Zauhar ever attended. This sentiment was repeated by actress Mari Oliveira from the film “Medusa,” who said that walking the red carpet at the opening ceremony was one of the most positive experiences she had, and that she was overcome with emotion upon hearing the cheers and support from the audience. Director and screenwriter Clarisa Navas, whose film “One in a Thousand” won the Best Picture Award at JIFF in 2020, said that she was happy to be in Jeonju to experience the festival since she was not able to participate in 2020 because of the pandemic.

Despite the hardships that JIFF and other festivals have undergone during the pandemic, film goes on. In the case of programmer Moon, she realized that her lack of skill in directing as a young filmmaker was made up for in her ability to manage relationships and complete various tasks. As a result, Moon started her career with JIFF in 2004 as a staff member and eventually worked up to the level of programmer. As a programmer for the festival, Moon helps to select and organize the artistic direction of the films chosen to be screened at the festival. Furthermore, Moon and the other programmers ensure that the events at the festival match the best interviewer for the session so that the experience of discussing film carries on after the credits finish scrolling.

This year, a total of 217 films from 57 countries were screened as a part of the festival. Though the festival only expected 60 international guests and 2,000 domestic guests, about 50,000 attendees joined the festival.

Overall, the films at the festival were varied and provided audiences the chance to see many different movies, such as the heartwarming “Room Sharing” directed by Lee Soon-sung and featuring the famous actress Na Moonhee. Her depiction of a hard-hearted elderly woman won over audiences with her silliness and chemistry with actor Choi Woosung. The Canadian film “Geographies of Solitude” showed the life of researcher Zoe Lucas in a quiet documentary that highlighted the uniqueness of the “island” Lucas has lived on since the 1970s. “Geographies of Solitude” won the grand prize for the international competition this year at JIFF. This year, immigrant issues seemed to be a common theme with films such as “TOKYO KURDS,” “The Exiles,” “CHOSEN,” and more showing various issues faced by immigrants.

Since the COVID pandemic, rates of theater-going have plummeted, and now for the first time most audiences in the United States

prefer streaming a movie rather than going to a cinema. As a result, festivals such as JIFF are trying hard to find the future of film, especially among younger generations. According to Moon, this led JIFF to launch the Cinephile JEONJU section so that festival attendees can “revisit past films worth discussing from the present point of view to save them from oblivion, and to establish a new context for film history through new films dealing with the past.”

While life in a post-pandemic world continues to move on, this festival still needs to grow before it can be widely recommended. However, in Korea, it is one of the few chances to see such a huge collection of independent movies.

While the Jeonju Dome has been a symbol of the festival for years, this is its last year, as a new independent movie theater will be built in its place. Hopefully, the new theater will be as welcoming to various people in real life as it displays on the screen.

eonju’s nature and architecture have been a source of inspiration to many, including Peng Yucong, who is pursuing a doctorate in painting at Jeonbuk National University. Yucong came to Jeonju as an exchange student from China, and her recent solo exhibition at Gyo Dong Museum of Art in Jeonju Hanok Village from May 23-30 was a reminder that anything old can be new again when viewed through fresh eyes. Her paintings gave an impression of Jeonju at once familiar and unfamiliar, a feeling easily understood by anyone who has tried to find home in a foreign country.

Yucong explained that she decided to come to Korea after meeting a Korean exchange student in art school in China and becoming fascinated with their distinctive style of art. “I came because I wanted to study Korea’s unique beauty,” she said, and her interpretation of that unique beauty was reflected in the works on display at “Walk: Through Nature Into the Journey of Life.”

One series of paintings was based on the mountains surrounding Jeonju. “During my first lonely months in Korea, looking at the mountains always reminded me of home and gave me comfort,” said Yucong, who belongs to the Tujia ethnic group and grew up in China’s Hunan Province. She picked Moaksan as her favorite nearby mountain because “Moaksan’s ‘mo’ is from the Chinese character for ‘mother,’” and just as a mother is always nearby, the mountain was a comforting presence whenever she saw it from her window.

Many pieces had a wonderfully intricate texture made using traditional lacquer techniques that can be found in both Chinese and Korean art.

Aside from the mountain series, one of the most impressive pieces was a multi-part work inspired by the hanok village. Elegant rooftop curves were surrounded by the brilliant reds and golds that can be found in the village’s fall foliage. Up close, the piece had a wonderfully intricate texture made using traditional lacquer techniques that can be found in both Chinese and Korean art. As for why she chose to assemble the work from multiple smaller pieces, Yucong said that it reflected her experience of the hanok village. “Even though I’ve been to the hanok village many times, each time I notice something new and get a different impression,” she said.

Other pieces in the exhibition were influenced by Chinese traditional art, especially the ancient murals in the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang. But even these paintings gave a sense of the international student’s journey. From the titular series “Walk,” various animals from traditional Chinese painting jumped across the canvas, and Yucong explained that their movements reminded her of the frantic dance of modern life to persevere through hard times and keep moving forward. “If we run fast enough, we can start to fly,” she said. For international students like Yucong finding inspiration in Jeonju, the city is a place to spread their wings.

by Agatha Christie reflects one of the most unique aspects of this dependable — yet often taken for granted — mode of transportation.

For people who live in fast-paced modern cities, trains are nothing but a means to get from point A to point B, with people cramming into them during rush hour, while some simply ride with their eyes glued to their phones. But if you take a moment to look outside the train’s windows and glimpse the people coming in and out of its doors, what the English writer said is true. Trains can allow you to see life.

In Wanju, a county in Jeollabuk-do known for its beautiful natural scenery and its distinct slow lifestyle, a train has stood the test of time — and perhaps has become a witness to an important part of Korea’s history.

It is located in Bibijeong Village, a sprawling area in Wanju that has the perfect combination of the past and the present. Surrounded by mountains, fields, and traditional houses overlooking the Mangyeong River, this village has undergone a successful restoration project to revitalize its travel and economic sectors. The village has several attractions for curious adventurers.

The Sangsaeng Nanumsup Forest (상생나눔숲) is a place where hikers can go to enjoy their nature respite, and the Samnye Culture Art Village (삼례문화 예술촌) consists of the Design Museum, Visual Media Art Gallery, Kim Sang-rym Carpentry Shop, and Book Museum and offers a variety of programs during exhibition events and art festivals.

The Bibijeong Art Train But one of the main attractions of the village is the Bibijeong Art Train (비비정예술열차), an old railway used during Japanese colonial times. In fact, many of the destinations in the Bibijeong Village have a cultural significance. The Samnye Art Village was once used as a granary and an official residence during the Japanese administration.

The Bibijeong Pavilion, which is located on a hill next to the train, is a remnant from the Joseon dynasty and was rebuilt in 1998.

The railroad that sits atop the river is often called the Bibi Romantic Road because many people who go here will surely fall in love with the breathtaking views and peaceful atmosphere.

In the past, people enjoyed riding boats and swimming on the Mangyeong River from Bibijeong Village. The train overlooking the river now consists of a restaurant, cafe, and a traditional crafts shop.

The Bibi Nak-an Cafe Another reason to visit the Bibijeong Village is the Bibi Nak-an Cafe, a scenic cafe that became more popular because it was one of the filming locations of BTS in their 2019 Summer Package. It is run by the village women's association in the Samrye area, and they get ingredients from various local farmhouses. Aside from coffee, you can enjoy traditional dried teas and organic fruit smoothies.

A Train to History THIS TRAIN STATION IN GUNSAN IS A REMINDER OF KOREA’S DARK HISTORY DURING THE JAPANESE COLONIZATION ERA.

unsan, a seaport city in Jeollabuk-do, is not only a harbor connecting many neighboring islands and other ports outside Korea. It’s also the site of many historical landmarks that have been preserved up to this day.

Trains of the Gunsan Line are a staple in the daily lives of the local residents. In the past, early trains were used by students to commute daily from their homes to schools in other regions. Women from the countryside rode trains to cities to sell their vegetables, while the men took the train to work.

The Gunsan Line was one of the first symbols of Korean industrialization and modernization.

You can learn more about the history of the Gunsan Line at a museum inside a converted train in Impi-myeon. Located on the eastern side of Gunsan, Impi-myeon has long been known for its prosperous and fertile land perfect for rice cultivation. In ancient times, the area was one of the 54 emerging nations of Mahan, later becoming part of the kingdom of Baekje. The name Impi means “adjacency to an embankment,” because there was an embankment in the area blocking the seawater.

A Landmark of History Impi-myeon was witness to many Japanese atrocities in the 1920s.

The station stood as a significant route that carried agricultural products from Jeollabuk-do to Japan. The Japanese accumulated wealth by seizing land and forcing Korean farmers to plant and harvest rice to be distributed to the Japanese. A farmer’s association resisted against the Japanese farm owners, staging one of the most famous uprising movements, called the Okgu Uprising of Peasants. The uprising in Gunsan marked the largest anti-Japanese movement by Korean citizens.

Meanwhile, on the Gunsan Line, the Japanese railway businessmen would discriminate against Koreans and charge them higher fares than Japanese passengers.

After the liberation of Korea and its rapid economic upturn, the number of train riders diminished over the years, with many people moving to bigger cities. This led to the closing of the trains on the Gunsan Line. Since 2008, no trains have stopped at Impi Station. Now, the well-developed and high-speed Gunsan KTX connects this wonderful city to the rest of Korea.

outh Korea dominates modern Olympic archery and has won the most medals in the sport. This is not surprising, as archery has been practiced in Korea for thousands of years. Their short but very powerful hornbows allowed Koreans to defend the Korean peninsula from frequent raids by Japanese pirates from the north, the Chinese from the west, and from the south and east from the ancient tribes.

The history of Korean archery is a fascinating tale. Koreans defeated their own conquers with their incredible archery skills and took back their land. Korean archers deserve the title of archery masters. Today, Korean traditional archery, or hwalssogi, is practiced as a form for teaching self-discipline, etiquette, and physical exercise.

I first became interested in Korean archery history when I moved to Korea in 2008, but I didn't have a chance to learn about hwalssogi until last year. I was lucky to find out about Cheonyangjeong in Jeonju, where people can learn and practice archery. I still remember my first visit to that place where people were shooting arrows. I was impressed with their skills and I wanted to be a part of that. The thought of standing up and raising a bow at Cheonyangjeong was a motivation for me. Finally, on May 1, the most important event for me as an archer was acceptance into the Korean traditional clubhouse at Cheonyangjeong.

고 있다시피 하고, 수많은 메달을 획득했습 니다. 수천년을 이어온 한국의 활쏘기 전통 이 있었기에 이러한 사실을 놀랍지 않습니 다. 한국의 전통 활인 각궁은 길이가 짧지만

아주 강력한 위력을 지니고 있어, 예로부터

남쪽에서의 왜구, 서쪽에서의 중국 그리고 남쪽과 동쪽에서 침략하는 야만인들로부터

한반도를 방어할 수 있었습니다. 필자는 한 국 궁사들의 재능을 매우 대단하게 여기고,

한국 궁사들의 문화, 역사 그리고 궁술에 대 단한 흥미를 느끼고 있습니다. 한국의 궁사

들이야말로 명사수라는 칭호를 받을 만 하

다고 생각합니다. 오늘날, 활쏘기는 정신 수 양, 체력 단련 그리고 예를 배우는 하는 방법

으로 여겨지고 있습니다. 전주에서는 천양정

활터에서 활쏘기를 연습할 수 있습니다. 천 양정은 전라북도 문화재자료 6호로 1984년

에 지정되었으며, 300년의 역사를 지니고 있 습니다. 천양정은 “버들잎을 화살로 꿰뚫는

다”는 뜻으로 뛰어난 활 솜씨로 이름 높았던 태조 이성계의 고사에서 유래한 말입니다.

们的文化、 历史和弓术非常感兴趣。 我认为 韩国的弓箭手们才值得被授予神枪手的称 号。 如今， 射箭被认为是精神修养、 体力锻 炼和学习礼仪的方法。 在全州可以在穿杨

History of Korean Archery I met coach Lee Chan Ho, who is an experienced and certified coach. He has been teaching Korean traditional archery for many years and told us about its history. ? Can you tell us the history of hwalssogi hwalssogi?

Traditional Korean archery has been designated as a national intangible cultural heritage. It is assumed that bows, which were the basis of our nation's historical activities, were first used in the Korean peninsula and Manchuria from the Late Paleolithic to the Neolithic periods. Arrowheads have been found at the Gosan-ri ruins in Jeju and the Suyanggae ruins in Danyang. However, some scholars claim that bows have been used for about 100,000 years.

While living in a settled life in a clan society, Koreans used bows and arrows as weapons, which continued to be developed by various tribes. If we look at Samguk Sagi [the historical record of the Three Kingdoms], it says that Buyeo had bows, arrows, and spears that were used as weapons It also says that bows were used in Jinhan, Mahan, and Byeonhan. The Dangung was originally used from the Gojoseon period, and it was produced in the land of Yeye and used in the Nakrang area and other regions.

Also, this was the beginning of the Korean Mokgung, the Dangung. During the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo was ruled by King Jumong, who was a legendary archer and founder of the Goguryeo dynasty. All of the following kings had archery as one of their principal virtues. Also, the wall murals in Muyongchong Tombs in Goruryeo (now

in China) show scenes of everyday life for the rich. The fact that one panel shows archers hunting deer and tigers means that it was an important aspect of their lifestyle.

The mural shows skilled archers riding expertly after their quarry. ? Where can people learn and practice Korean traditional archery in Jeonju?

Here in Jeonju there’s Cheonyangjeong pavilion. It was designated as Jeollabuk-do's Cultural Property No. 6 in 1984 and has 300 years of history. Cheonyangjeong means “hitting the willow leaf with an arrow,” which originated from the historical event of King Yi Seong-gue, who was famous as an expert archer.

This pavilion was built at the archery ground where young people practiced during the Joseon dynasty. The building was originally located at the west side of Daga Stream, but it was washed away by a flood. Nine years later in 1722, a pavilion was erected at the foot of Daga Mountain and was used as an archery ground. In 1830, another pavilion was built and named Cheonyangjeong pavilion after the old name. Since then, Dagajeong facing north was used by young people, while Cheonyangjeong was used by the seniors. However, the archery practice at Dagajeong and Cheonyangjeong was abolished under the Japanese occupation. Today, you can join as a member if you would like to join to learn and practice archery.

n the middle of the field, you stand still. The wind moving the distant flags tells you to hold your hand.

Eyes on the horizon and mind in the pointy arrow, take a deep breath…

Gungdo or gungsul, as archery is known in Korean, is an integral part of the Korean soul whose origins are lost in the mist of time. Records date the presence of the bow in the peninsula as far back as 5,000 BCE. We can see the inherent relationship between archery and the Korean identity by the fact that Korean people were called dongyijok by the ancient Chinese, which can translate to “Eastern people who master archery.”

The practice of archery in Korean history was not merely reserved for the military class; rather, it was seen as a fundamental activity for any person seeking to develop themself, from the royal class to the commoners. Because of the high influence of Confucian principles and values in society during the Joseon dynasty, archery was present as one of the six arts of an educated citizen. In this sense, according to the book of rites, archery was seen as the way of benevolence, since introspection and self-awareness are necessary skills that must be mastered by the archer.

The technique for traditional Korean archery differs from the Western one in many aspects. First, the Korean bow is shorter but with strong tension. Second, the bow is gripped with the thumb instead of the index and medium finger. These two characteristics indicate that the Korean bow was also used on horseback.

In general, the posture when drawing the bow must be so that the archer stands stable, allowing to stress the bow from an upward position and then pulling the string down while aiming. The holding arm must be slightly curved and not straight as in Western archery. This will ensure better aiming and reduce the risk of injury when releasing the bow string.

Practicing Korean traditional archery is not only an excellent way to keep our bodies and minds healthy, but it also gives us the opportunity to connect with the spirit and heart of the Korean people.

Nature’s Therapy There are so many reasons why hiking is considered “nature’s therapy.” One obvious reason is that the physical effort of walking uphill is good exercise and therefore good for one's health. Another benefit of hiking is that it soothes and clears the mind away from the hustle and bustle of the city. According to Greater Good Magazine, “not only does [hiking] oxygenate your heart, it helps keep your mind sharper, your body calmer, your creativity more alive, and your relationships happier.”

Forest Bathing In Korea, “forest bathing,” or salim yok, became a popular term for de-stressing and improving well-being by being surrounded by nature. Experience forest bathing in the vibrant green trees and deep blue skies in Jinan, a county known for being the only highland plateau in Korea. Three rivers meet in Jinan, particularly, the Geum River, Seomjin River, and Mangyeong River. The harmonious combination of rivers and mountains makes this county famous among mountain climbers, with Unjang Mountain, Gubong Mountain, and Mai Mountain being three of the most popular destinations in the area.

n many cultures, the lotus flower is spiritually symbolic. It is often associated with rebirth and enlightenment, just like how it submerges every night into the water and blooms fresh again in the morning. In Jeonju, the sea of lotus plants and flowers have become the inspiration of many written poetry from the past.

The Deokjin Lotus Park first opened in 1938, and at the center of the park is the famous Deokjin Lake, which dates back to the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). The park includes nine stone monuments to commemorate historical figures, engravings of Shin Seok-jeong and Kim Hae-gang’s poetry, and a statue of General Jeon Bong-jun.

In the past, the lotus park was the site of the Dano Changpomul (Water Iris) Festival, an event held on the day of Dano, a Korean traditional holiday that falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Newly Opened With New Attractions Over the past couple of years, the park has undergone major renovations. The old steel and wooden arch suspension bridge has been replaced by a new and safer bridge that offers visitors a better view of the lotus blooms.

Other renovated parts of the park are the children’s park, which now includes more play areas; more hanokstyle viewing decks and pavilions; and photo zones added to ensure that visitors can take that picture-perfect shot. There is also a new garden called the Yeollin Jeongwon, which is filled with plants and flowers.

While much of the park seems new, many well-loved attractions remain the same. The Yeonju Gate, which is the main entrance of the park, is considered special because its entrance signboard was written by the famous calligrapher Song Seong-yong. The Chwihyangjeong Pavilion, which was once a shelter for Koreans during the Japanese colonial period, was built by Park Gi-soon and can now be found surrounded by lotuses. In the summer, many visitors anticipate the music fountain show.

The lotuses bloom from early July to early August, but the new garden and revitalized attractions now enable visitors to enjoy the park all year round.

eonju, the city of books where books become life,” declares the Jeonju Municipal Library. While Jeonju has its fair share of standard neighborhood public libraries, these days residents and tourists alike can also enjoy a variety of creative new libraries sprinkled throughout the city, with more to come.

Each space is designed around a unique concept that seeks to break the boundaries of what defines a library.

The Poetry of Nature Haksan Forest Poetry Library (학산숲속 시집도서관) in Pyeonghwa-dong is nestled on a hill overlooking a small reservoir and walking path. Although there is a paved road up to the library, it’s narrow and full of foot traffic, so it can be easier to park below and take a short walk up the hill to the library. Approached by foot, the poetry library comes into view between the trees with a simple silhouette and wooden shingles on the exterior, a fairy-tale cottage that welcomes visitors inside for a break from their adventures. The forest cottage theme continues in the library’s calm and cozy allwood interior. To the right of the entrance, you can head upstairs to a tiny loft just high enough to sit or lie down with a book, or you can go down to a more spacious sunken reading area with inviting floor cushions.

that line the shelves of the library are all poetry books or literary journals. In addition to Korean poetry books, the library has a plentiful selection of foreign books in languages like English, Chinese, and Japanese, from ancient classics by Homer to modern classics by Audre Lorde. I recognized a few books from my own library, including a hefty volume of the complete works of Edna St. Vincent Millay. Settle in with a book and pause between each poem or two to look out over the forest and water while feeling the poetry of nature.

Hello St. Travellers’ Library (첫마중길 여행자도서관)

Although Hello St. Travellers’ Library is perfectly situated to welcome visitors to Jeonju, it sends them right away again on exciting journeys to other worlds.

For visitors arriving to Jeonju by train, Cheotmajung-gil, or “Hello Street,” is a themed street directly across from Jeonju Station that stretches west into the city. Developed as a culture street, the space hosts various events and markets throughout the year and is also home to Hello St. Travellers’ Library.

In contrast to the quiet, natural attraction of the poetry library, this library is vibrant and modern, made of two bright red shipping containers connected by a rooftop terrace. The books on offer are similarly vibrant — one of the rooms is full of books about art, travel, and film, along with wonderfully illustrated fairy tales and comic books. My superhero-loving husband settled in with a book on DC comics, while I was pleasantly

surprised (but mostly scared!) to find two books of H.R. Giger’s artwork after having rewatched “Alien” just the night before.

Although the library is perfectly situated to welcome visitors to Jeonju, it sends them right away again on exciting journeys to other worlds. The books in the first room are almost entirely in English, while the second room has Korean texts, including local books and books on travel. There are also postcards, coloring pencils, and empty notepads for visitors to make their own souvenirs or leave a message as a memory of their trip before heading back to the train station.

More to Come: Yeonhwajeong & Ajung Lake Libraries

With the popularity of Jeonju’s recently developed libraries, more are opening this year. Yeonhwajeong Library in the center of Deokjin Park just opened this June. Housed in an elegant hanok building overlooking the park’s lotus pond, the library is sure to be the most serene spot in the city when the flowers are in full bloom, usually around July. The library’s books focus on introducing the traditional beauty of Korea. Another popular outdoor spot is Ajung Lake in southeast Jeonju, with a boardwalk around the entire lake completed last year. Now construction has begun on a new lakeside library set to open at the end of this year. The design calls for a 100-meter-long wooden library, which will be the longest of its kind in Korea once completed.

Take a Tour Haksan Forest Poetry Library, Hello St. Travellers’ Library, and Yeonhwajeong Library are just a few of Jeonju’s many special libraries. he buildings that make up Book Village Haeri in Gochang are what remain of a former school closed in 2006 that could have easily fallen into permanent disuse and disrepair. Instead, the book village was opened in 2012 and breathes new life into a space that still offers educational opportunities, albeit in a different form.

Although the book village briefly closed during the pandemic, it is open once more on weekends and makes a charming day trip for families with children who love to run and explore, or for adults who want to enjoy books against a nostalgic backdrop.

Book Village Haeri has a unique admission fee: the entry price is one book per person, which can be purchased from the bookshop at the entrance.

The shop covers two rooms and has a nice selection of picture books, novels, and young adult books. I went home with a children’s book about a ghost hunter, the perfect match for my reading level and interests! After you choose a book, you can spend time enjoying it in the cafe adjacent to the bookshop or you can start your journey around the village.

A few eye-catching buildings immediately stand out, like a giant owl with a ladder inside leading up to a window between the owl’s eyes, or a climbing wall and swing in front of a wooden treehouse.

Enjoy these playful recent additions to the village, or head back to the older buildings.

The largest and oldest building is divided into three spaces inside — one full of old books on topics like politics and philosophy, one about the history of Korean book printing with old-fashioned presses and printing equipment on display, and one that highlights local books of Gochang and Jeollabuk-do.

Other buildings include a large children’s reading room, complete with a loft area and some foreign children’s books in languages like English, Thai, Japanese, and German. There is also a cozy comic book reading room toward the back of the complex where you can find the familiar faces of your favorite illustrated characters.

Book Village Haeri hosts events and offers experience programs for students. Check their blog or instagram page for more information. The village is also a short drive from the seaside, so enjoy some seafood and a beachfront sunset after your visit!

veryone who lives in Jeollabuk-do knows that the cities provide convenience, but that the countryside evokes deep appreciation for living in Korea. This is especially felt in the secluded hanok villages located in the outskirts of Jeonju nestled among the mountains.

In Wanju’s Sanggwan-myeon, the newest village is not “new” at all, but is a mix of relocated and reconstructed hanoks overlooking a nearby lake and beautiful forested mountains. The crown jewel of the neighborhood, Li An Jung, is an accommodation relocated from Gyeonggido. While moving a house may seem unusual to some, this is a practice that is made possible thanks to the traditional method of hanok construction.

These wooden houses are built without nails, allowing them to be disassembled and reassembled as necessary. As a result, the current owners were able to move the building to the top of the neighborhood without losing any of the hanok’s original charm.

This 200-year-old hanok was originally constructed for an aristocrat. The owner’s prestige resulted in a hanok incomparable to others. The roof possesses unique curves, the breathing nature of the wooden structure has immeasurable charm, and everywhere you look, distinct features require you to stop and appreciate the natural beauty of this house.

The tigerwood beam in the main bedroom is one of these features that make Li An Jung such an incredible structure.

Recently, photographer Adeline Merrick stayed at the accommodation for one night and was able to spend her time gazing out the windows, eating nourishing miyeok-guk, and taking photos. As her partner, I was able to just enjoy being in nature, lying on the grass, and listening to the chickens in the back garden clucking. The owners made us feel right at home with the wife’s homemade dinner and the husband’s musical taste. Li An Jung can be reserved online for your own relaxing escape in the countryside. While the small hanok only has two bedrooms to properly accommodate four people, additional guests may sleep in the living room. The barbecue grill on the patio means that you can make wonderful memories, and it’s only a 15-minute drive from Jeonju Hanok Village.

The current owners, a lovely couple who have a tourism company focused on Europe, have used this space to showcase art and focus on the nature around them. The wife has embroidered all of the floor cushions and curtains with delicate flowers. One end of the house boasts an imported sound system that allows you to enjoy any type of music with exceptional sound quality.

While most of the original features of the hanok have been maintained, the groundlevel kitchen was renovated into a lovely bathroom with a tub ideal for relaxation.
