From the Designer

This new year brings a few changes to Jeonbuk Life magazine, and with new changes, a new design was in order.

First, rather than printing every season, we are now printing only three times per year. So going forward, we will use volume numbers by year.

Second, additional translation languages will be provided in the future - beyond Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese. Therefore an entirely new font family was needed in order to accomodate the new languages. For the redesign, I’ve selected Google’s Noto font due to its versatility. The font was designed for over 1,000 languages and 150 writing systems, and will therefore be the most “future proof” for additional languages.

Finally, inspiration for the new layout comes from Time magazine, Dream Escape magazine (a luxury travel magazine in the UK), and the 2018 redesign of National Geographic magazine, which won the National Magazine Award for Design in 2021.

I hope you enjoy reading the new magazine as much as I enjoyed creating it!

The purpose of this project is to enhance the image of Jeollabuk-do and increase the influx of foreign students by revitalizing Korean language education by supporting the operation of Saemangeum Korean Language School in Vietnam, Laos, Russia, and Myanmar.

We aim to strengthen the internationalization capabilities of Jeollabuk-do residents by improving access to various foreign languages and world cultural contents.

We promote global talent development by providing opportunities for domestic youth to participate in development cooperation projects and strengthen their job competencies.

• Support for preparation for the Test of Proficiency in Korean through Korean language education for locals • Host the Korean Culture Day by opening and operating culture lectures to promote the culture and history of Jeollabuk-do

• Introduce various attractions in Jeollabuk-do for opinion leaders in related fields such as foreign missions in Korea and international experts

We discover the networks of organizations wishing to exchange international exchanges in the province and support that they strengthen their capabilities, to promote public diplomacy in Jeollabuk-do.

• Promote public diplomacy in Jeollabuk-do through the selection of private organizations wishing for international exchange and customized consulting support.

The purpose of this tour is to promote the charm of Jeollabuk-do by inviting domestic and foreign opinion leaders to Jeollabuk-do and visiting various attractions in 14 cities and counties.

• Promote the charm of Jeollabuk-do by inviting SNS influencers and support them for FIT (Free Independent Traveler, individual traveler) type of travel.

2. Projects for Developing Jeollabuk-do as a Global frontier ① Jeonbuk-type development cooperation project

The purpose of this project is to promote the development and mutual exchange and cooperation programs with developing countries and expand our contribution to the international community in Jeollabuk-do through agriculture and traditional culture, which is the strength of Jeollabuk-do.

• Build ‘Dak Lak Friendship Village’ to support the economic and social development of Dak Lak Province, Vietnam, a friendly exchange area with Jeollabuk-do • Discover and commercialize of new Jeollabuk-do development cooperation projects • Hold an Official Development Assistance (ODA) forum for university students to raise awareness in the field of development cooperation

② Overseas emerging exchange expansion project The purpose of this project is to expand the scope of exchanges in Jeollabuk-do through emerging exchange areas and networking of institutions.

• Operate cultural exchange programs such as Jeollabuk-do traditional performances and cultural experiences • Establish cooperative relationships with relevant domestic and foreign organizations and private organizations related to international exchange and promoting the signing of Memoranda Of Understanding (MOU)

4. Projects for Establishing a Friendly Jeollabuk-do ① Jeollabuk-do English PR magazine Jeonbuk Life production The purpose of this magazine is to raise awareness of Jeollabuk-do by providing information on various issues of Jeollabuk-do from the perspective of foreigners residing in the province.

• Publish an English magazine three times a year and deliver information by translating it into various languages such as Korean and Chinese.

• Write articles related to various topics such as history, culture, and language.

② Jeonbuk-friendly foreigner support project

We carry out various projects to improve the quality of life and enhance a sense of belonging in Jeollabuk-do through customized support projects for foreigners in the province.

• Operate foreigner club support project to support events organized by foreigner clubs by hobbies and interests • Host the event ‘Harmonious Courtyard for Foreign Workers’ that raises a positive perception of Jeonbuk by holding local community events for foreign workers.

• Host a video content related to Jeollabuk-do contest for foreigners residing in Korea, in order to build a positive Jeollabuk-do image.

• Operate Technical Education Program for Foreigners to support foreign workers and foreign students in Jeollabuk-do to acquire technical qualifications that are easy to obtain visas.

Cherry Blossoms

HE JEONGEUPCHEON Cherry Blossom Road creates a spectacular sight in spring from Sangdong to Yeonjidong along the Jeongeup River. The local government usually holds a variety of programs that both citizens and tourists can enjoy. You can enjoy the beauty of cherry trees by day or night as the government installed night lights along the road that change into different colors to show off the beauty of the cherry blossoms.

You can also see more cherry blossoms around the Naejang Mountain Reservoir and the Cherry Blossom tunnel on the way from the Maple Ecological Park to Naejang Mountain. These are considered some of Jeongeup’s hotspots that you definitely shouldn’t miss out on.

만연한 봄, 정읍천을 따라 정읍 상동지역에서 연 지동까지 이어져 오는 벚꽃이 만개한 둘레길은 멋진 장관을 이룹니다.

정읍시는 시민들과 여행객들이 즐길만한 다양한 프로그램들을 준비하고 있습니다. 다양한 색으로 변하는 야간 조명이 설치된 길가는 만개한 벚꽃 의 아름다운 자태를 즐길 수 있습니다.

단풍생태공원에서 내장산으로 이어지는 길목의 내장산 저수지와 벚꽃 터널주변의 만개한 벚꽃 또한 경험 할 수 있습니다. 이 곳들은 정읍에서 꼭 잊지 않고 경험해보아야 할 장소로 손꼽힙니다.

Vào mùa xuân, dọc theo dòng suối Jeongeupcheon, hoa anh đào nở rộ từ khu vực ga Sangdong đến Yeonji-dong ở Jeongeup là con đường đi tản bộ rất đẹp và ngoạn mục. Thành phố Jeongeup đang chuẩn bị nhiều chương trình khác nhau cho người dân và khách du lịch đến thưởng thức. Bạn có thể thưởng thức vẻ đẹp rực rỡ của những bông hoa anh đào nở rộ dọc hai bên đường nơi những chiếc đèn đổi rất nhiều màu vào ban đêm được lắp đặt để nổi bậc thêm vẻ đẹp lộng lẫy . Ở công viên sinh thái cây lá chuyển màu bạn cũng có thể trải nghiệm hoa anh đào nở rộ quanh hồ và đường đi bộ đầy hoa Anh đào trên con đường dẫn đến Naejangsan.

Những nơi này được tính là những nơi bạn sẽ không quên và muốn trải nghiệm ở Jeongeup.

Jeongeup’s Ssanghwa Cha Street

eongeup’s Ssanghwacha Street is in Jeongeup’s Jangmyeong-dong on the road leading from the police station to Jeongeup Tax Office. There are 13 traditional tea houses along the road. Nokdukkot Tea House is one of my favorite tea houses in Jeongeup. The owners are very accommodating, and they speak English too.

Ssanghwatang, also known as ssanghwacha, is a traditional Korean tea with a deep brown color and slightly bitter taste that is made by boiling down a number of medical herbs.

It was considered an herbal health tea and consumed in the morning and at night during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Korean teas are enjoyed not only for their taste but also for their medicinal properties and health benefits. They are usually served with nurungji or roasted karetteok.

My second favorite tea house is Suwoldam Hanok Cafe Tea House. It is located near Geumsansa Temple in Gimje, where you can try a templestay or enjoy hiking.

Experience and feel the beauty of hanok while enjoying the amazing view of the Geumpyeong Reservoir and rejuvenate with your own traditional ssanghwacha. There is also a campsite nearby.

Hyuaen Dadam Hanok Cafe in Jeonju Innovation City is another hanok cafe that offers traditional handmade teas.

Phố Jeongeup Ssanghwacha

Phố Jeongeup Ssanghwacha nằm ở Sangmeon-dong, kéo dài từ Sở cảnh sát Jeongeup đến Sở thuế. Có 13 quán trà truyền thống liên tiếp trên con phố này, và quán Bean Tea House là quán trà yêu thích của tôi. Chủ quán trà không chỉ tiếp đón tôi ân cần mà còn nói tiếng Anh Ssanghwathang, còn được gọi là Ssanghwa Tea, là một loại trà truyền thống của Hàn Quốc được pha với nhiều loại thảo dược khác nhau.

t is easy to take things for granted when they have always been there. And sometimes, it can be hard to find something special in the mundane: from places like the neighborhood supermarket that has been around for 50 years and the historic church that time and everyone pass by, to a boy riding his bike every morning or a couple slowly walking hand in hand.

For Sungmin Park, each stroke of his pen recreates a scene to immortalize on paper the beauty of simple moments and places. Each illustration evokes a sense of nostalgia and quiet wonder. His works prove that he is a master of observation, fleshing out the intricacies of architecture, expressing many emotions, and opening stories for interpretation with one drawing. He makes daily life seem extraordinary with each line, curve, and shade. In this interview, he shares his thoughts about making Jeonju one of his main inspirations and the emotional power of this genre of art.

Hello, I’m Sungmin Park, a local illustrator who is active in Jeonju, the city with the most Korean history of 1,000 years. ? Why the name “Sensitive Minute?"

My name Sungmin has the initials S and M. And my childhood nickname was “emotional” Min. I was absorbed by music, scenery, and art that other boys my age weren’t interested in, so I often heard that I was emotional. So, I chose the name Sensitive Minute with love for the moment when I was sentimental. ? When did you discover your talent for drawing?

I have always liked drawing since I was young. When I was four years old, my mother saw my scribbles of flowers and butterflies and wanted to develop my artistic talent. I started studying at an art academy at the age of 17. I don’t think I’m talented, but I think I’m a person who practices and strives a lot. ? Why are so many of your drawings of historical Jeonju landmarks?

I was born, raised, and live in Jeonju.

Jeonju, a historic city, is the most Korean city that combines the past, the future, and the present. I recorded this wonderful place through my illustrations with my knowledge and feelings.

I started drawing it in the hope that many people would come. ? Your store is very popular with tourists in Jeonju. How do you feel that your work brings happiness to people?

Thank you for saying that my store is very popular. All the small picture postcards I sell are evenly purchased, and popular works among foreign travelers are Jeonju Hanok Village attractions such as Hanok Village View, Gyeonggijeon Hall, Omokdae, Jeondong Cathedral, Jeonju Hyanggyo Local Confucian School, and Pungnammun Gate.

I am posting pictures of old places in Jeonju on social media. People who have seen the pictures remember the old space and leave comments saying that they are moved by memories. And every time I feel rewarded that I am making people’s hearts warm with my drawings. ? What message do you want to deliver with hand drawing?

I know that all places and landscapes remind people of different images and feelings. The message of my drawing will only be felt by the person looking at it. ? This style of illustration is popular on social media and was recently introduced in detail in the drama “Our Dear Summer.” What do you think about this growing popularity?

This painting is a genre called pen drawing. The male protagonist, who became famous for starring in the movie “Parasite” in Korea, seems to have further increased its popularity. Thanks to this, many people seem to have started paying attention to this art genre, but I have been drawing works with a pen for a long time. Many people are surprised when they see my drawings because the character in the drama exists in reality.

Inspirations from a Blank Page KOREAN TRADITIONAL PAPER HANJI PROVES THAT THE MEDIUM IS INDEED THE MESSAGE

s I start writing this story, I stare at the blank Microsoft Word document in front of me, with the blinking cursor waiting for words to come out from several taps on the keyboard. In this highly digital world, it’s so easy to delete words, copy and paste blocks of text, and most importantly, send the document with just one simple click. I could only imagine living in the Joseon dynasty, using hanji, or traditional handmade paper from Korea, along with a bottle of ink and a pointed brush. How much harder would it have been to correct a single misspelled word? How much longer and farther must one piece of paper have been transported to reach its recipient?

One thing’s for sure: “Hanji has acted as a framework supporting the establishment of Korean philosophy and spirit within history, culture, modes of the era, and lifestyles.” This was the central theme that pervaded the Jeonbuk Museum of Art’s first special exhibition of 2022 called “Lunar Sonata: Hanji Works and Contemporary Art.” Echoing this theme were philosopher Friedrich Hegel’s words posted on the wall of the exhibit’s entrance: “The spiritual attitude of contemplating the past has its objective in integrating history and the present through contemplation, by thinking about things of the past and mediating them to life in the present.”

Overcoming the Passage of Time Hanji is made from the paper mulberry tree and is produced by traditional methods of sheet formation that have been passed down from one Korean generation to the next. The process of creating hanji is an art form, which compacts fibers and lessens ink bleed. Not only is hanji known for its durability and ability to stand the test of time, it is also widely used for its simplistic beauty.

Hanji has been useful as a tool in Korean history in the production of royal documents, legal texts, historical records, maps, Buddhist scriptures, and other books. It has also permeated the daily lives and homes of Koreans, as it has been used as a material in books, fans, walls, windows, doors, and other household items.

Along with the ji, pil, muk (paper, brush, and ink) and si, seo, hwa (poetry, writing, and painting), the exhibit aimed to “retrace how hanji connects tradition and modernity in the present.” The different sections of the exhibit showed hanji in its many diverse art forms: through paintings, digital art, sculptures, and decorations, among many others. Hanji, once considered a background, is now in the foreground. The sections reinforced the “need for a new approach to hanji, focusing on its potential as a medium of artistic expression” and “expand its applications to fields such as architecture, fashion, interior design, video art, and installation.”

“Hanji has acted as a framework supporting the establishment of Korean philosophy and spirit within history, culture, modes of the era, and lifestyles.”

Symbolisms of Hanji Hanji is more than just a medium for writing or a background for art. As the exhibit displayed, ancient texts depict how Koreans compared the color of mulberry and hibiscus pulp in the paper-making process to the color of the moon. Hanji’s unique off-white color symbolizes purity, or the worship of white in Korean spirituality. Other than its conceptual value, hanji’s simple color enables other colors to shine more vibrantly, as can be seen in paintings and sculptures that used it as their base.

FROM THE MOMENT you enter Lim Eun-hee’s hanji studio in Iksan, you’re surrounded by eye-catching items on all sides.

Tables are covered with tools and materials for hanji crafting classes, and the shelves lining the wall display a variety of hanji items such as decorative boxes, miniature figures, and framed artwork. During our interview, Lim emphasized wanting to show people the diversity of hanji and the various roles it can play in our everyday lives.

A Healing Hobby, a Life-Changing Passion Lim’s interest in hanji, the Korean traditional art form of making paper, began after she left a stressful career for health reasons and got a fateful piece of advice to learn about hanji as a form of art therapy. She enjoyed the natural feel of hanji paper and experienced it as almost a living thing. Lim found that through hanji, her mental and physical well-being improved tremendously. As she began to pursue hanji in earnest, she also discovered that in a society with constant pressure in everything from earning top grades to getting married to reaching financial achievements, simply following one’s passion can be the truest form of success. You can’t fail as long as you’re doing what you want, she said. And it turned out that hanji was exactly what she wanted.

Korean culture are more likely to seek out unique hanji souvenirs or join a hanji experience program and see the various ways hanji can be used in making practical and affordable items for everyday use. Lim said she hopes to break people’s stereotypes about hanji and see it become more popularized for modern consumers.

There’s plenty to recommend about products made from hanji. Hanji is formed from the bark of paper mulberry trees, or daknamu — Jeonju hanji is particularly famous because of the abundant and high-quality daknamu grown in the region. This makes for extremely durable paper, as documents written on hanji have survived for centuries. During our visit, Lim invited us to hold a 100-year-old piece of hanji that was still sturdy and supple without a single shred.

Hanji is breathable and can withstand water exposure, making it suitable for use in clothes and other wearable accessories. Lim showed off a colorful bag crocheted from yarn spun with hanji, an example of putting the traditional craft to a nontraditional use.

Jeonju hanji is particularly famous because of the abundant and high-quality daknamu grown in the region.

Indeed, Lim has found plenty of success following her love of hanji. In 2019, she became the first artist from Iksan to be officially designated as a national hanji master. In addition to offering classes at her studio, she has also led hanji activities in many schools and festivals around Iksan. Lim shared some of her experiences contributing to hanji projects on the international scale as well, including hanji interior designs for Korean embassies in countries like Vietnam and China and for athletes’ dormitories at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

Hanji Traditions and Modern Developments Interestingly, Lim explained that in her experience, foreigners are often more interested in hanji than Koreans. Many Korean people have a fixed idea of hanji as an old-fashioned craft used in making expensive art pieces, she said, while foreigners who are interested in learning about

With the growing interest in Korean culture around the world, Lim hopes to see hanji get more attention as well, and joked that she would like to tap BTS as the next hanji ambassadors. In the meantime, Lim is doing her part to help hanji thrive for the next generation.

NATALIE THIBAULT’S love for hanji arts and crafts began back in 2010 when she led her class in creating a hanji paper mache craft. She’s always been fascinated by the colors, patterns, and designs in hanji, and admitted she often has trouble leaving a hanji store without buying something. In 2011, when she was visiting Jeonju Hanok Village, she noticed a shop that sold such crafts. Inside she met the woman who would become eventually become her mentor in hanji art.

? Can you tell me about your background? What brought you to Korea? How did you get into Hanji art?

I have lived in Iksan for more than 15 years. I first arrived in Korea in 2004 and started my teaching career in a hagwon. I transitioned to public school teaching after a few years, and I am now an assistant professor at Wonkwang University. When Korean people ask me where I am from, I always reply, “I’m from Iksan!” which instantly makes them chuckle! For real, I consider Iksan my home, and I feel very lucky to have settled down here.

I started doing hanji art in 2010. I was fortunate to meet a Korean hanji artist who taught me and showed me the ropes in the most inspiring way. She gave me both freedom and guidance to work with the material and let my creativity flow.

After only a few lessons with her, I decided to start doing hanji art on my own, experimenting and learning through trial and error; it has been my modus operandi ever since.

Even now, after more than a decade, I am still learning how to improve and refine my craft. I do not believe the learning will ever stop, and I am grateful for that! ? Jeonbuk Life did an article on you in a previous issue. Has anything changed since then? What are you working on now?

A lot of things have changed for me since 2016. Even though I am still creating small décor items, accessories, and jewelry that are available in my Etsy online shop, I progressively moved away from the festival and craft fair scene here in Korea. The most interesting development for me is the pursuit of artistic projects. I had the chance to participate in three collective art exhibitions, one in Iksan and two in Jeonju. These have been priceless experiences for me, and most importantly, they gave me the opportunity to connect with fellow artists of different disciplines and walks of life. Connecting with other gifted photographers, painters, poets, and videographers has been wonderful and inspiring, as it pushed me to challenge myself and explore new aspects of my craft.

The “Speechless” exhibition, held at the RedBox Gallery in Jeonju in 2017, was my first occasion to work on two-dimensioned works. My three artworks were inspired by foreign words that do not have any literal English translations. For the “Artists Assemble” exhibition, organized by the Jeonju Art Museum in the fall of 2020, I was invited to reflect and express my belongingness to the province of Jeonbuk. In both those projects, I had the chance to work alongside incredibly gifted artists from the area and experiment with different aspects of hanji art.

? Have you faced any particular challenges that you've had to overcome? Did COVID impact your Hanji art in any way?

The pandemic has impacted all our lives and has forced us to rethink some of our well-established paradigms. Being confined at home and not being able to travel abroad somehow “unlocked” free time I could dedicate to my hanji! In addition to having more time to allocate to my art, I have been pushed to connect with other artists and artisans through social media rather than in person; handmade markets and art shows where we can mingle have been replaced with Facebook pages and group chats where we exchange ideas and insight. It is important for me to be connected and involved in artistic communities, and COVID has forced me to rely more on virtual exchanges rather than in-person ones. ? What is your future outlook for Hanji art? Where do you suppose it will take you? In Korea? When you leave Korea?

With the increasing curiosity and attention towards Korean culture, I foresee a renewed interest for hanji art!

Hopefully, an influx of artistic interest will push hanji art into new territories. While I sincerely hope that the precious traditions of hanji art remain protected and cherished, I believe that there is room for new insights and inspirations coming from different artists who can bring a fresh perspective to this millennial form of art.

As for me personally, hanji has been such a significant part of my life that I know for sure that it will always remain at the heart of my creative work. My art is fueled by the material itself; its textures, colors, softness, and incredible strength never cease to amaze me. I am eager to work on new projects that could possibly combine different materials with hanji paper, including wood, glass, or concrete!

The possibilities are endless, and I am eager to continue learning and experimenting.

나탈리 티볼트 씨는 전라북도 익산시에서 15년째 거

공예 작품은 지난 2016년 전북라이프 매거진에 수록된 적이 있는데, 이번 발간호에서 한지공예가 특집을 발행 하면서 나탈리씨를 다시 만나 최근 그의 작품들을 다시 볼 기회가 있었습니다.

나탈리씨는 2010년 한국인 한지공예가를 만난 후

처음 한지공예를 시작했습니다. 그를 가르쳤던 공예가 는 나탈리씨로 하여금 스스로 자유롭게 매체를 탐구하 면서도 한지를 이용하는 방법을 가르쳤으며, 그가 스스 로의 창의성을 펼칠 수 있도록 했습니다. 수업이 몇 회 차 지나지 않아서 나탈리씨는 스스로 한지공예를 하기

시작했으며, 여러 시행착오를 거쳐 실험하고, 배워나갔

FOR LEE IN-OK, president of the Hayerang Institute of History and Culture in Jeonju, “history is life.” During JBCIA’s recent visit to the institute, Lee shared her philosophy of history education and her passion for developing educational programs and materials since 2004. She noted the problem that history education which focuses only on passing exams by memorizing names and dates is a process that can be boring and difficult for students.

For Lee, studying history should be a process of building connections and finding one’s place in the world. “I can’t live properly if I don’t know history, and I can’t live properly if I don’t know my own roots,” she explained.

The Hayerang Institute offers educational materials about two notable battles in Jeollabuk-do, the battles of Ungchi and Ichi in 1592. Ungchi and Ichi are two mountain passes around Jinan and Geumsan, respectively, and passing through either would have allowed the Japanese army to take the fortress in Jeonju and control the Honam region. At the battle of Ungchi, Japanese forces were held off through two waves of battle before finally breaking through the pass, but their losses were so heavy that they were forced to retreat anyway before taking the fortress.

The battle of Ichi similarly ended in failure for the Japanese military, which then gave up on trying to occupy Honam and eventually lost the war.

Throughout our visit, it was evident that Lee’s guiding principle is bringing Korean history alive for learners.

Rather than learning about history as something distant, students can feel connected to history and view themselves as a crucial link between the past and the future.

The Hayerang Institute achieves this through a variety of learning tools developed in-house. 玉最近在全北国际交流中心访问期间说“历史就

是生活” ，并分享了她对教育项目和媒体发展的 热情，以及对历史教育她的独特哲学。

研究院通过可以一边学习一边旅行的旅行指

unsan is known as a city with many contrasts. It boasts the best of both worlds: the natural beauty of the Geum River spilling into the Yellow Sea, and hightech facilities that make it a flourishing manufacturing city. But there’s also another duality that makes Gunsan even more captivating for visitors: it thrives with history and modernity at its forefront. Tourists flock to Gunsan to explore the landmarks that symbolize Korea’s modern history.

Several remains from the Japanese colonial period exist as reminders of the country’s dark past. They not only strengthen Korea’s nationalism but also deepen the young generation’s knowledge about the atrocities of war.

From the outside, you might think that this place is simply a big warehouse because of its tall facade and rustic exteriors. But once you step in, you’ll realize that it’s a complex art gallery, cafe, and cultural space where like-minded artists gather to display their works.

The huge cafe occupies two floors, with a mix of antique and modern interior decor. If you open the back door, you’ll find a terrace with a remnant of one of Gunsan’s old railroads in front reminding locals of the past.

In the same complex, there’s another building that houses regular themed exhibitions featuring local artists. The works of art often feature the beauty of Gunsan in all its mysterious secrets and glory.

Historical Japanese house

Several structures from the Japanese colonial period have been restored and opened as museums for visitors in Gunsan. Some of them include the Old Gunsan Customs Museum and the Gunsan Modern History Museum, as well as old Japanese-style restaurants, banks, and houses.

One house that is considered a hidden gem in Gunsan is the Hirotsu Japanese House in Sinheung-dong. It’s a traditional Japanese-style mansion with trees that are several hundred years old, garden ponds, and statues. It became National Registered Cultural Heritage No. 183 on June 18, 2005. This house was a residence for the wealthy class during the Japanese occupation period. It has also previously been used as a drama or movie set.

evant is a Middle Eastern fusion restaurant recently opened in Jeonju’s bustling Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Old Gate area. It is the only restaurant in Jeollabuk-do that serves a full range of Middle Eastern and eastern Mediterranean dishes. Levant’s cuisine includes dishes from Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Palestine, and parts of Iraq and Greece. The menu is made up of halal meats and delicious vegetarian and vegan options. Levant’s spice-imbued lamb kabobs are slow-cooked over an open flame.

The chicken shish tawook has a similar presentation to lamb kabobs and is marinated in spices before being slowly roasted. Levant’s meat dishes are a complexity of flavors com-

bined with a slow-cooked tenderness. The menu also includes a diverse set of plant-based dishes, making it ideal for people seeking a vegetarian or vegan option. This includes Levant’s freshly made walnut and roasted garlic hummus, which can be eaten alone or enjoyed with handmade pita bread. Levant’s pita is made from scratch minutes before it is served fluffy and warm to the touch. Other vegetarian options include Levant’s baba ganoush and falafel. The baba ghanoush is an eggplant-based dish sharing a similar texture to hummus and is made from an assortment of fresh vegetables. Levant’s chickpea-based falafel, created with a myriad of herbs and spices, is their vegetarian favorite.

Levant is the only restaurant in the Jeollabuk-do Province that serves a full range of Middle Eastern and eastern Mediterranean dishes.

The common theme with all the food on Levant’s menu is the complexity and richness of flavors. Yara Abu Dakka, Levant’s owner, explained that while there could be as many as 15 different spices in a dish, the dish isn’t necessarily spicy. Levant’s diverse cuisine seems to reflect the cultural background of its owner. Yara was raised in Dubai by her Palestinian father and Syrian-Turkish mother. Her family’s ethnic diversity combined with the cultural diversity of her hometown—Dubai, a cultural melting pot— exposed Yara to the full range of Middle Eastern and eastern Mediterranean cuisine. Yara has a practical, intelligent, and warm disposition. She came to Jeonju as a graduate engineering student at JBNU focusing on sustainable energy. When asked about her motivation for opening Levant, she sensibly explained that she missed food from her homeland.

Yara is passionate about sharing her culture through food. Her eyes light up and her voice grows choked as she talks about the experience of help-

ing customers understand her homeland’s cuisine.

Levant’s cuisine is distinct from Korean food because of its complexity of flavor. Yara stated that sometimes her biggest challenge is her customer’s lack of reference for Middle Eastern and eastern Mediterranean cuisine. Regardless of any first-time customer’s confusion about the taste of the dishes, Levant’s menu has been welcomed with open arms by the Jeollabuk-do community. If you go to Levant on any weekday, it’s busy with tables occupied by customers excited to experience something delicious.

Levant’s atmosphere is warm thanks to the friendliness of the three-member team whose nationalities range from European to Central Asian. The Levant team members smile easily and are eager to serve customers. Yara’s passion for her homeland’s cuisine seems to have had an osmotic effect on her employees, who demonstrated an in-depth knowledge of the menu and food-making process.

Yara explained that the name Levant comes from an ancient reference to the eastern Mediterranean and central Middle Eastern region. Given her diverse cultural and ethnic background, Yara seems to come from a homeland that covers an entire region of the world and is not relegated to one specific country. What makes Levant unique is the passion that goes into each dish. This passion seems to emanate from Yara’s desire to share good food and, even if in a small way, share a meaningful part of her homeland and diverse cultural story.
