I don’t know about you, but its always so hard to find the right atmosphere to read in! It’s time we change that and set out around the Cedar Falls area to find the best locations to do so.
My favorite place to read is my room, specifcly in my reading chair. I have spent many hours locked away in my room reading from dusk till dawn. It’s so comfortable but gets a old very quick using the same space for readng. Follow me around CF to dicover the perfect reading nook!
As
I set out on this jounrey to find the best readng nooks around Cedar Falls, I had to consults some back up. Some of my best friends are readres so they know the best places to get out of the house and enjoy their current read. Kathrine loves local coffee shops for the dence coffee bean smell and the faint chill music that plays in the background. The closest coffe shop option to her apartment is SideCar. She says the dim lighting and the smaller shop feel makes her feel more emersed in her books. She has a rutine of coming in after class to take a small break for a cofee and some reading time.
This libary can be a little intimadating becuase of how large it is and the amount of people around on the weekdays. To combat this, move to the second or third floor where it is almost silent. Small areas between the stacks and by the large windows as pictured below are easy to find and less utalized.
There were also many open areas where grand artwork was displaed like to the right.
The next place loved by many students is Rod Library. Rod has many hidden areas and comfy seating to relax and do your homework or curl up with a good book. As we explored the librarry’s nooks and crannys, we found bean bags in sunny nooks and what felt like lots of space. Its clean smell and silent floors are best to digest your most complex reads on your TBR.
A place recomeded to me by my friend Anna is the Cedar Falls Libary. The atmostphere is quite and warm yet the perfect place to read. If you like a place with a little bit of foot trafic and some minimal background noise, this is the perefct readng place for you.
Pictured on the left is this very comfortable couch which we loved. This section is a little out in the open, so if you want a more quite nook head to the back where you will find small desks with lots of natrual light. (Pictured above)
Maucker Union is a place all students have been at least once in their time here but only a select few spend a lot of time here. Maucker Union is like a second home to me so I know all the secretes about this building.
My favorite place to get away from the hussle and bussle around the main floor is pictured to the right. It is locted behind Chats Coffee House, all the way back on the left-hand side. It is the perfect tucked away paridice for any reading position possable.
The photo picture above is located right outside of the CME and is one of the compyest couches in the union. It’s the best place to spend a little time reading between classes or even o the weekends.
The faint smell of rich coffee, soft natrual light, super kind workers, and a beautiful environment? Say no more!
You can find this at Cup of Joe. This coffee shop loctaed downtwon CF is one of my all time fvorite places to knock out a few chapters of my book. It has compy seating and vintage vibes that are always in style.
The last stop on our book nook search was The Tea Cellar. The Tea Cellar is also located in Down Town CF. This place was recomended to me by many students and I knew I had to check it out.
The picture at the top of the page is the check out and it suits the whole style of the business. Its dark colors and melo vibes serev the best enviornment for reading.
There is so much seating for customers and they welocme stuents and readers kindly. The strong tea aroma and the craftsman like interior work so well together and suprized me how much I enjoryed it.
Get the first insight into the fans of Alexandra Brackens book tour for her New York Times Bestselling novel, Silver in the Bone.
On April 6th, 2023, Alexandra Bracken and Susan Denard visited Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville, Illinois on Bracken’s book tour for her new novel Silver in the Bone. This new novel is fuelled by love, revenge, curses, Arthurian lore, and a lot of adrenaline. It follows the main character Tamsin Lark who breaks into ancient crypts against sorceresses to gain treasure but only comes away with a curse.
Because these two authors had been so real with the audinace, I thought it would be fun to get to knew a few avid Bracken readers. I Got to know then and how they ended up at this event.
Alexandra Bracken is a New York Times Bestselling Author of many novels including The DarkestMindsSeries,Passenger, Wayfair,Lore , and now Silver in the Bone. Susan Dendard is also a New York Times Bestselling author of the Blood Witch Series who happens to be close friends with Bracken.
Through this two-hour-long event the audience got to learn all the inside secrets about the making of Bracken newest book and her other most popular releases. This tour started on April 4th, 2023 and ended on April 15th, 2023. Her tour locations are as follows: Plainville, MA, Fairfax, VA, Nashville, TN, Decatur, GA, Naperville, IL, Vernon Hills, IL, Frisco, TX, Houston, TX, Orem, UT, Los Angeles, CA, and Phoenix, AZ.
Many of these tour dates were conversations with other popular Young Adult Authors includ-
ing Holly Black, Susan Denard, Patrice Coldwell, J. Elle, and Victoria Aveyard. I was lucky enough to attend the event with Susan Denard.
As I arrived with my sister Noelle and one of my good friends Heather, we were sparkling with excitement.
Heather, Noelle, and I had met Bracken on a different occasion during her novel release of The DarkestLegacy so we were excited to be a part of yet another one of her events.
Heather is studying to be an English teacher at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana because she has always had a connection to stories of all kinds. Since she was a kid, she has always loved to read and write. For the past few years she has been working on her own novel.
“I hope to publish my manuscript someday,” said Heather. “It’s my dream to teach literature but it’s my calling to be a published author.”
She added.
Noelle has been an on and off avid reader for as long as I can remember. She has always enjoyed a good audiobook and has recently gotten deep into the fantasy genre.
“Alex’s past books have been great but now that she is writing a new fantasy book, I am so ready to dive in,” Noelle said.
“Events like these keep me motivated with my own work,”
There were people everywhere looking around and shopping before the event had started.
A few minutes later, a line started to form in the back so we hopped in it to wait for the authors to come out.
At these kinds of book events, the ticket comes with a copy of the book and the opportunity to get it signed at the end. One of the workers at Anderson’s Bookshop started to ask for names and passed out books. As she passed out books, we met a few other fans in line.
We walked in the bookstore and it was buzzing with excitement.Pictured Above: The crowd at the tour event. Pictured Above: The front table display at the event.
Andrea was the first person I introduced myself to. She is from Naperville and regularly attends Anderson Bookshop. She told me all about her love for the reading community and Alexandra Bracken’s writing.
She said, “I absolutely love being able to live in a place where I am lucky enough to get to attend all the book tours that come through here. I have met Alex three times now and I always love her events.”
Andrea is such a huge fan that she brought a stack of books by her that are yet to be signed so that they can be. She also knows Susand Denard and is an avid fan of hers.
She states that she loved the Blood Witch series and absolutely adores Denard as a person. She has followed all her book releases as they have come about.
“This is truly a once in a lifetime event for me” she said.
There were so many others like her at this event. I even got to meet Liviy, the author of Bracken’s Wiki Page for her book Lore . These pages are fan run but the creators do a lot to manage and complex all the information known about the novel.
“Lore is my all-time favorite book,” said Liviy.
“From the first page I knew this book would destroy me”.
She decided to attend this event because she had never had the opportunity to meet her in the past. Her excitement was contagious about Lore and she was hoping to get some of her unanswered questions answered at this event.
As we all sit down in the audience, we are all ready to listen and ask questions. The authors came out and a roar of applause ripped through the small audience. The two authors sat in the very front of the audience and began with descriptions of their latest books.
Since Bracken and Denard are so close the conversation was so funny to follow along with. They met through their writing and went on many trips dedicated to brainstorming and developing their current books in a new environment.
Most of their conversation in the first segment was about writing craft. Many audience members asked questions about motivation and drive to write as an author on deadline.
Burn out is easy with creative intensive jobs so finding a reset is a must.
Next they took a lot of audience questions. A few questions had to do with Bracken selling the rights to a Lore movie and how she wrote this new novel. A few secrets into her process and lots of sneak peeks into the book were shared. This open conversation with Bracken and Denard was lots of fun and was filled with many great answers to audience questions.
Bracken’s advice was to “find your creative reset”.
After the conversation we all lined up to get to speak with these amazing authors one-on-one and get our new books signed. When my group walked up, Bracken took our books and immediately recognized us from our last visit.
She asked us how old we were now and what we have been up to. It was so heartwarming to know that she remembers her fans and makes a huge effort to get to know them as best she can.
Each person that came up also got free prints from Bracken and a free signed map from Denarad.
Book events are always so great to attend because you learn so much and get to make relationships with all the people that love the same thing you do. I highly encourage every book lover to try and attend these kinds of events for their favorite authors because it will surely be a day to remember.
The very first Harry Potter novel made its appearance on the shelves in 1997. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone flipped the reading world upside down. All ages read these books from start to finish. Art, movies, plays, theme parks, fan fiction, museums, and more all stemmed from this era. To this day, people still create content about the vast cast of characters introduced throughout the series. For many, this era will never end as it has made its mark throughout the world and will forever be their reading sanctuary.
Mythology, cabin personality tests, and Camp Half-Blood t-shirts were all the rage starting in 2005. This epic series about Greek mythology took over the middle-age reading world by a storm with the chosen one trope, witty characters, and epic adventures to last you a lifetime. The popularity of this series still sustains till this day. There were two movies made about it, a broadway show, and many new sister series’ were born from Percy Jackson’s popularity. This series created millions of online communities and a safe place for many to express their love for Percy and the rest of the gang.
In 2008 a huge chunk of newly released series with vampires, werewolves, angels, witches, love triangles, and more came to peak popularity. From middle aged moms to young teenagers, these novels pulled at everyones heart strings. Series like The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer, Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick, Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, and Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater consumed the reading world. Many books, movies, tv shows, fanfictions and more developed from this trend. Twilight being the most popular, had people all over the world asking: are you team Edward or team Jacob.
Wiches, wizards, assassins and powerful leaders started to take their place as popular characters to follow. Fantasy books by Cassandra Claire, Sarah J. Mass, Leigh Bardugo, Holly Black, and Brandon Sanderson took over the shelves. Authors even took liberties of connecting all their books into a single world so that everyone’s favorite characters would always make an appearance somehow in their new books. To this day, people love the many fantasy worlds that make up the genre and the popularity does not seem to be going away any time soon.
The dystopian era took the reading community with them and ran. TheHunger Games by Suzanee Collins, Maze Runner by James Dasher, Divergent by Veronica Roth, TheDarkestMindsby Alexandra Bracken, Legendby Marie Lu, and many more became popular between the years of 2008 and 2017. These books created huge followings online and off. The wide age range of audiences that these stories reached, latched on to them. They made personality tests, fan fiction, movies, tv shows, and more. These stories were all anyone was talking about for years on end and still to this day do people discover these books.
Life got boring so the readers gravitated toward those books that they could relate to or learn from. The heavy topics took charge and even initiated some change. Words are powerful and many listened to these ones. Books like The FaultinOurStars by John Green, TheHateYouGiveby Angie Thomas, and Simonvs.theHomosapienAgendaby Becky Albertaily were rising in popularity. They were so popular in fact that movies were made from them and were very popular among the readers and non-readers.
As the world got crazier, all the book world wanted to be is crazy in love. This era features very popular books in the romance genre such as Bookloversby Emily Henry, TheTwistedHateSeriesby Ana Huang, Unhoneymoonersby Christina Lauren, and just about anything written by Colleen Hoover. The list goes on. These books are easy to read and let their readers escape into a beautiful romance story. A big following reads these books but no huge communities were created as a result.
