EMIRATES GOLF CLUB SENIOR MANAGEMENT

This is the summer issue of Club Life magazine already - how did that come around so quickly? I am sure that our two current Captains, Paul and Sulafa cannot believe that their year is almost over. They are still in office until 31st August but, as we all know, the summer is very quiet and not a lot happens. Paul said that he would love to have done another year because he enjoyed it so much. I think that’s a good indication of how much he enjoyed this season. However, others are waiting ‘ in the wings’ for their opportunity to get involved so one year it is! Paul, Sulafa, you have both had an amazing season, culminating in your end-of-season Captains’ trips overseas and, by the sound of the reports, these went exceptionally well (there are a couple of reports in this issue about the trips). The next issue of Club Life will be at the beginning of next season, in September, so I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Paul and Sulafa for their incredible enthusiasm and for making it a fun-filled year from start to finish! I know you will both feel that something is lacking next season when you are not involved …and you won’t have that precious car parking space!! However, it will be time for our incoming Captains to shine…Ishu and Yana who are sure to have an absolutely superb year with a lot of fun along the way. You will, of course, receive a lot of support from the members so enjoy every minute - it really does fly by! We have an incredible facility and wonderful colleagues here at Emirates Golf Club….there are so many competitions and social events, great dining outlets, sports facilities, spa and beauty salon. As well as that we have a senior management team that is approachable and progressive thinking with 100% support from wasl. What a superb Club of which to be a member and we should all consider ourselves so very privileged; one of our members recently played at a course overseas and expected that his clubs had been loaded onto the mini bus, as would be the case at our Club and, only when reaching his hotel, did he discover otherwise…we are so spoilt here and many of us take for granted all the little extras that make our Club so special. Embrace it, enjoy it and love every minute. As we come to the end of the season I would like to thank all contributors to Club Life magazine; every colleague at the Club is busy and I know they all dread getting the ‘Jacqui Barry’ email asking for their material for Club Life. Some need a little reminding here and there but everything manages to come in on time somehow and I really appreciate everyone’s input. Thank you all and I hope you enjoy your couple of months off over the summer.

AGER’S CLUB MAN LETTER

4

Dear Members, As we move into June, the official golfing calendar draws to a conclusion to make way for the hot summer months. I wish you all an enjoyable summer vacation for those of you heading out of Dubai.

Paul and Sulafa, our Captains for this past season, officially end their term in office on 31st August so still a few months to hold onto the precious parking space! Since this is the last Club Life prior to the September edition I would just like to once again thank them for being fantastically passionate and supportive Club Captains this past season - it has been a pleasure working with them both. Yana Jamieson and Ishu Rupani take the helm from 1st September with Boyd Edmondson and Naima Maya as their Vice-Captains; good luck to you all and please ENJOY! The Members’ Consultative Committee (MCC) has been very supportive over the past nine months so a big thank you to our Captains plus Mike Mezei, Ashley Anderson, Iain Everingham, Leonardo Sissmondi, Lionel Smith and Tej Chhabra. We will be looking for some ‘new blood’ from August 2019 so if being part of the MCC appeals to you please drop me an email. I would also like to congratulate the Omega Matchplay Champions on their success: Anil Shivanna & Glory Xavier: Omega Mixed Matchplay Champions Anil Shivanna: Men’s Singles Omega Matchplay Champion Glory Xavier: Ladies’ Singles Omega Matchplay Champion Sanjay Dhandsa & Kooros Daneshvar Men’s Pairs Omega Matchplay Champions Amber Waite & Fatima Rizvi Ladies’ Pairs Omega Matchplay Champions The main team competitions were once again keenly contested affairs with our Scratch League squad, led by Mike Mezei, finishing runners-up to Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club. This was a hard fought final on both the Majlis and Dubai Creek courses which produced a 4.5 – 3.5 victory for our sister club Dubai Creek with the final putt on the final green. Well done to all involved. The Ladies’ team went one better and lifted the Inter-Club trophy once more; congratulations to Sulafa and all lady members who competed over the season! Barney Coleman Club Manager

Summer Projects Driving Range and Short Game areas

The Academy Team, Matthew Perry and I met with Pete Cowen recently and agreed on the changes required for the practice facilities. Over the summer months, you will notice a number of changes including: Majlis Short Game area – re-designed, enlarged, more chipping space provided • Majlis far end – driving range modifications to increase width of hitting lines plus modifications to the chipping green. NOTE: hedge will be replaced to divide tee box two and the driving range. • Faldo short game area (near Par 3 course) – changes to improve short game practice options. • Majlis driving range – bunkers reduced in size to aid ball collection and aesthetics of range.

Members on the Creek Hyatt activities

Topgolf Construction officially started in March 2019 due to unforeseen delays. These included changing the orientation of the building (guests will now drive past the Par 3 course, park at the far end, and hit towards the Marina skyline) and the discovery of utility lines under the driving range footprint. TOPGOLF Dubai is currently scheduled for a May 2020 completion and should be operational in June.

carine Extension Later in 2019, the Carine kitchen will extend outwards towards the main car park. Due to the success and popularity of the restaurant, the extension is necessary to maintain standards and to cater for an increased volume of guests.

Plastic Campaign During Quarter 4 of 2019, we will no longer be giving out plastic bottles of water at the cart staging area. Each member (and vising guest) will receive a reusable flask similar to the National Geographic one you have, enabling us to reduce plastic consumption by approximately 220,000 bottles per year.

Andy Meech After 17 years working for Dubai Golf as our Head of Sport and Leisure, Andy Meech left Emirates Golf Club on 31st May. Andy has been an outstanding ambassador for Dubai Golf over his tenure and we wish him the very best of luck in his future career. Andy has grown the leisure facilities at the Club substantially over his time here and has left the offering in a very strong position. Please join me in welcoming Dougie Gair as Andy’s replacement. Dougie has been working at Dubai Creek for the past two years and will oversee Sport and Leisure across the two clubs as per his predecessor.

Golf Operations From 1st May I am delighted to announce that Rhys James was promoted to Director of Golf and Cian Hurley was promoted to Golf Services Manager. I am sure you will agree that both promotions are fully deserved and I would like to thank you for your continued support of their management of the golf operation.

Dubai Creek Resort Combining the golfing expertise of Dubai Golf, with the hospitality expertise of Park Hyatt, the Dubai Creek Resort will bring benefits and synergies to enhance members’ experience. We welcome Stephan Schupbach to our team as Managing Director, and with Stephan on board we are well on our way to realising our vision of creating a worldleading golf and leisure resort at Dubai Creek. Stephan has a wealth of global and regional hospitality experience, having held key positions within the One & Only Group, Ritz Carlton and Jumeirah Hotels and Resorts. I am personally very excited by these developments and look forward to working closely with Stephan and his team on the synergies available, which will enhance your overall membership experience. As a Dubai Golf member, the five-star golf experience and Club atmosphere that you are accustomed to remains. Your membership benefits and reciprocity with Dubai Creek continues and has also been enhanced. With immediate effect, your membership benefits have been extended to a 25% discount across all of the Park Hyatt dining facilities.

Director of Golf, Craig Waddell, will still be based at the Creek Clubhouse and along with his team, remains members’ key Club contact. He will work closely with Stephan and the Park Hyatt team for the golf operation and membership. Remy Milana will be promoted to head up the golf course maintenance team at Dubai Creek, with support from Matthew Perry at Emirates Golf Club and Mark Tupling from Jumeirah Golf Estates. I will also still actively support the operation – in particular from a membership perspective, to ensure the overall membership experience continues to meet your needs and expectations. To avail of your membership discount at any of the Park Hyatt Dubai dining facilities please present your membership card on arrival and settle your bill at the time of purchase. We will continue to work hard to ensure the Club remains one of the best in the Middle East and that your Dubai Golf experience remains the five star experience you are accustomed to! CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE

Rhys and Cian have been a fabulous support to me with Nishanthi assisting in organising all our events. Thanks to them all and their wonderful teams.

Dear All I honestly have to pinch myself and ask where the year has gone. It has been an unbelievable year but the fastest I have ever experienced. My time as Captain of this wonderful place is something I will always cherish and never forget. From day one, the kindness and support from everyone has been overwhelming and very much appreciated. We are all very lucky to be part of the membership here and the facilities we have on our doorstep all year round. The competition year is almost at a close although the Captain’s role continues until 31st August but, in reality, nothing much happens over the hot summer months. Congratulations to all our winners over the season; we had plenty of competition offerings which gave all the members many opportunities to participate and win. Our final mixed competition finished with Captain’s Team v Lady Captain’s Team at the end of May and I must say congratulations to Sulafa and her team who gave my team a good beating. It was so nice to see many members stay for the presentation afterwards. We had the Club Matchplay trophies to present and congratulations to all our winners but I must mention Anil and Glory who completed the double of winning the Mixed together and Men’s and Ladies’

The Club would be nothing without our superb colleagues who make our experience on and off the course even better. Each and every one of them makes a huge contribution to the Club, spoiling us with the course set-ups and our F&B delights. I got to know them a lot more during my Captaincy and I can honestly say they work so hard and take pride in what they do. Thank you. An integral part of the Club now is our Club Life magazine. This gives all of us members and visitors an update and information on all that happens in the Club during the month. The magazine is produced to the highest level and this is all due to the hard work and dedication from Jacqui Barry. I’m sure you will all agree that it’s great to be able to catch up on monthly activities in the magazine and Jacqui’s professionalism in getting all the articles and updates on upcoming events is a great contribution to our Club. It’s not an easy task to get all the contributors to do our monthly write-ups but, with plenty of reminders from Jacqui, we somehow get it done on time. Thanks Jacqui for all you do on a voluntary basis for the magazine and I now look forward to relaxing and reading our new Captain’s articles. As my time is coming to a close, a new chapter will start with our new Captains. I wish all the best to Ishu and Yana and I can assure them that it will be a fantastic experience. Also best wishes to Boyd and

SATURDAY 11TH MAY 2019 Saturday 11th May saw the return of the Black Tee Challenge which was played on the Majlis course. Our champion was Nathan Fisher from Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club, having carded a fantastic total of 70, 2 under par. The runner-up was Toby Bishop from Trump International, after his great round of 73 and in third place was Simon Fast, representing the Emirates Golf Federation, with a solid score of 75.

Naima on the Vice-Captaincy roles who will, for sure, be a great support to our Captains. Thank you to my partner in crime, Lady Captain Sulafa. I think it’s fair to say that we both enjoyed our year and we definitely brought a fun factor to our Captaincy. A breath of fresh air and always a smiley face, I feel very lucky to have had Sulafa with me throughout the year. During the Captaincy one’s time is consumed because our presence is required at the Club most weekends and also mid-week, I could not have done this without the fantastic support of my wife Aisling and family. Our weekend schedule was very limited but we still worked around my commitments and they fully understood my limited home time. I will be forever grateful and I look forward to getting back to a normal family life again. I would like to send my best wishes to my golfing buddy Scott who is leaving the Club after a long time. The Saturday gang will be at a loss and we wish Scott and Carol all the best for the future. As Captain I have organised a trip to my beautiful home country of Ireland for 24 members. I’m sure we will all have a brilliant time playing five rounds of golf and hoping we get blue skies for our visit. I’m looking forward to showcasing Ireland to many of the guys who will be visiting for the first time. I can guarantee lots of fun and maybe an odd glass or two of Guinness but I can’t predict what the weather will hold but I don’t think that will bother us too much!! Finally, thank you to all our members for the support and kind words throughout the year. I really appreciated it and I felt so honoured to be the Captain of this marvellous Club. May I wish you all a fantastic summer wherever you will be and hopefully, I will see you all safe and sound in September. Paul Byrne Club Captain - 2018-2019

I would like to say a big thank you to all members, and especially to the ladies’ section, for the generous support and donations throughout the year. Thank you also to all colleagues and management who made this year so very special and a big thank you to Paul who made this year more fun than I had imagined. Sadly, there was not enough time to accomplish all the tasks that were planned for the year; one of them that stayed close to my heart was working alongside Andreja to bring awareness on Rett syndrome which was going to be the Lady Captain’s charity event that unfortunately we couldn’t bring to life! The end of season concluded with the much anticipated matchplay between the Captain and the Lady Captain’s teams. I do have a confession…yes, I bullied Mr Captain in the

DUBAI GOLF LADIES’ PAIRS EVENT FIXTURE 5 Tuesday 11th June 2019

On what was a hot and humid summer’s morning, the fifth and final instalment of the Dubai Golf Ladies’ Pairs event took place over the Earth course. The format of the event this time around was a Pairs Texas Scramble, and, with exciting prizes to be won, courtesy of Project Beauty, the ladies headed out onto the course hoping to return triumphant. With an impressive 59 (-13) the winners on the day were Beatrice Galeppini and Retna Scheppens, the duo from Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club who were four shots clear of the rest of the field and it could have been even better it had not been for dropped shots at the tricky 18th hole. With three pairings all scoring 63 (-9) a card play-off was required to determine the runners-up and third places with the pairing of Sheila McIlroy and Ursula Lotti from Jumeirah Golf Estates taking the runners-up spot. Eventual third place were Janet Kim and Sa Jo from Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, the duo also winning three of the four nearest the pin events, with Janet winning on the 13th hole and Sa Jo taking the 4th and 17th. The remaining nearest the pin was won by Emirates Golf Club member Sulafa Hamdan on the 6th hole. Stephen Hubner (Director of Golf Operations) “Our ladies’ sections are continually growing and this series has provided the membership with further opportunities to all get together, not just for a game of golf but also to socialise, which is all part of the fun. It’s great to see the camaraderie on and off the golf course and we are extremely grateful to our sponsor, Project Beauty, who help us to make these events possible.”

About Me A nomad of the new world with a golf bag as my companion, my name is Christopher Jammal; I was born in Dubai 15 years ago to American-Lebanese parents and our journey has taken us to nine countries before bringing me back to my birth place, Dubai. I have lived in Dubai for the past two years and nowhere has affected my golf like Dubai has. My introduction to golf was from my dad in Egypt way back when I was five years old. The second that I picked up the club I fell in love immediately. My dad noticed I had a natural swing and decided to pair me up with a coach who really got me started on the game of golf and he was the first coach to see that I could become a golfer.

Emirates Golf Club, or as I call it ‘my second home’, literally, is the best golf club I have ever been a member of. The Club has allowed me to explore the game of golf in a much different aspect than I normally would. It is this Club that got me exposed to competition, to failures and success, which makes this Club the best in teaching lessons and rewarding success. Another thing that Emirates Golf Club has provided for me is an AMAZING coach in Stephen Dean, Steve is one of the main people who has allowed my game to develop from being good at golf to being great and, without him, I don’t think I would be where I am today.

Hello, my name is Andrew Jammal and I am 12 years old. I am an American of Lebanese descent and I have lived in nine countries, playing golf in most of those places since the age of six. My inspiration to start golf at such a young age came from my Dad. He used to take my brother to the golf course, and I would always come in the cart and watch both of them play until my Dad finally decided to let me try the game. From that day on, I knew golf was the sport for me because after the first swing I took, it felt natural. I am very dedicated to golf and I am on the golf course five hours a day, six days a week, mainly with my brother and my friends. I have been playing internationally ever since I started at US Kids Golf in Austin, Katameya Heights junior tour, and attending junior golf camps and much more. My dream is to become a PGA Tour major winner and to excel in my golf skills to one day become the greatest player in the

The Support Last, but no least, the support that I get from the people around me; although my Dad is the one who really got me into the game of golf, I don’t think that I would be where I am today without my Mom. She is constantly having to drop me off at the Club and pick me up every

Tournaments Throughout my nine year golf journey I have participated in several tournaments like Men’s Opens, Junior Opens and Club Championships, but out of all the tournaments that I have played, the one that really sticks out is the 2018 Junior Open at Emirates Golf Club on the Faldo course. It was one of the biggest junior events that I had participated in and was definitely the toughest competition in all of the UAE. It was actually the first Junior Open I was in and I ended up shooting my lowest round on the Faldo which resulted in a 4 under and first place gross in the tournament.

Who Is Your Favourite Golfer? A question that I am often asked is “Who is your favourite golfer?” and there is only one way that I could respond to that which is Dustin Johnson. He is the type of golfer I aspire to be; he is always the farthest hitting player,

single day which can be very tiring for her but yet she still does it to support my game. She is also my number one supporter in golf and in everything that I do. Another supporter is my Dad despite having him travel a lot he always finds a way to make time for my brother and me and our golf. No matter where he is, his first question is always “How was school?” and “How was golf?” and thanks to him and my Mom, I am always provided with love. Finally, I must mention the members of Emirates Golf Club who are the coolest and nicest members ever; they always congratulate me on my wins and they are always willing to have conversations with me. As I get ready to move on to the next chapter of my life I always know that Emirates Golf Club will have a place in my heart. Until next time…

world! Watching the Omega Desert at Emirates Golf Club has given me the motivation to work harder to one day participate at the golf club where my parents made the great decision to become members. Golf is not just an expensive stressful sport, but it is an entertaining, unpredictable one. When I started golf, I used to watch these amazing players such as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy and I always thought to myself, “How do they take divots? How do they hit it so far? How do they never duff shots?” After years of practice, now I personally ask “How do they hit bad shots, How do they miss short putts?” My friends always say, “Golf is so easy” or “Golf takes no skill” but I like to explain to them that the ball is tiny and the target is tiny but the huge field with all the challenges that are faced is a skill-based sport. Playing golf for almost my whole life has thoroughly educated me as a person when I am on the course adding up scores, finding slopes on the putting green and so on. The most important thing to do is to keep a positive mindset because everyone will have one or two bad holes but if the negativity continues then scores will get higher and higher. Before participating in a tournament I always focus on forgetting my opponents and instead, competing with par; this gives me the boost that I need because when I play these tournaments, I will always encounter someone who is more experienced than I am and competing with them is moving out of my boundaries which can easily ruin my consistency. Coming to Emirates Golf Club has led me to meet one of the greatest coaches, Stephen Deane, who also is the Junior Elites’ director. He has

been a very helpful teaching source to both my brother and I and has been helping my game the whole way since the day I arrived at Emirates Golf Club. Steve has just been a boost to both my brother and to me ever since we came here; he enhanced my game and now I am trying to hit the ball 300 yards and trying to shape my shots thanks to Steve! Just recently I joined the Junior Elites where we practice together and have competitions on Thursdays and Fridays, enjoying our day together as a group while competing. I look forward to playing more golf in the future but I will always keep a connection to Emirates Golf Club even though I am finally returning to my home in the US this month.

Golf Trip to Ireland

organised by Club Captain Paul Byrne

“What’s the Craic Emirates Golf Club?”

The mighty K Club delivered a marvellous pint of Guinness, so good that it would have been rude not to start the day with a couple of the same. Niall Quinn, the famous football player and Vice-Captain of the Club convinced Young Black of its medicinal properties which was all the convincing that was required. The group was faced with a two to three club wind on the day, and indeed this played into the home team’s hands. Young Black and Keith ‘The Gimp’ Prosser faced off against Big Niall. The game was all done with five holes to play and it was then clear that Niall’s Guinness ploy had worked on another gullible duo. Young Black went on to win the group points on the day. A fantastic reception was put on by the club where various gifts and trophies were exchanged. Dev did not come last! All tucked up in bed by 8pm

participate in the Captain’s trip to Ireland.

What a coincidence that Emirates Golf Club Saturday Group’s ‘Wee Blogger (WB)’ would be in the same vicinity as the guys who travelled to

It all started in the various Dubai airport lounges and Duty-Free outlets. Purchases were made in an obvious attempt to overcome the anticipated,

Day 1: St Margaret’s Golf Club Emirates Golf Club team flexed their considerable muscles as they faced off against Captain Paul’s best friend and indeed the Captain of St Margaret’s Golf Club. Young Mr Black confessed that our Captain, although throwing mud at the opposing Captain as the banter flowed, had made a worrying statement on the bus. “We are going to get pumped by these guys”, while shaking his head in defeat which was not a very confident attitude from our Captain who has won almost everything at our Club during his tenure. Alas, Captain Paul’s prediction was spot on! The team were not “pumped” but it was indeed a win for the opposition. However, Captain Paul and Young Black

Day 3: The K Club

From the shadows, your WB made the below observations as the week progressed.

adverse weather conditions that were ahead of the group of people who typically reside in warmer climes. Vice-Captain Ishu, (or should we call him ‘The Whiskey King’) and Joseph ‘Don Julio’ Andrade need not have been concerned. The group turned out at the beautiful St Margaret’s Golf Club wearing shorts for the first event of the week.

Mmmmmmm!!!!

The weather had finally turned, and the Emerald Isle began to bare her teeth. We were now at four degrees Centigrade and three men down with ‘Man Flu’. We probably should not name them, but Aly ‘Gentleman’ MacMillan, Dave ‘Sicker Note’ Moody and of course the original ‘Sick Note’ Dazza Cole. The day got off to a great start with a couple of pints of the famous ‘black stuff’…again! The great start ended at this point. The rain was horizontal on the first tee, the sky was black, and the wind was cutting through the group. Most had never experienced the likes, but those who had, were also suffering. Cian ‘This is my Job’ Hurley settled for a 10 at the first hole and he was apparently happy with the result. Mike ‘Three Balls’ Tracey walked off halfway down the second hole - he didn’t even take his clubs as they were abandoned until someone from the club braved the storm to collect them. Mike was apparently eight Irish coffees to

Day 5: Luttrelstown No challenge match today other than the scramble for points from the group as nobody wanted to go home with the dreaded wooden spoon at the end of this trip. Once again, the weather was magnificent with most of the group turning out in our Emirates Golf Club uniform (shorts), having done the pre-match preparation of two pints of Guinness each which became the theme for the week ahead. Druids Glenn lived up to its fabled expectations. Many of the group elevated the track into their global top 10. We had a full complement of golfers participating but the home knowledge of young Tom Barry shone through, resulting in him coming first, with Darren ‘Sick Note’ Cole coming a very close second. Cian ‘This is my Job’ Hurley would have come last if it had not been for Dev. All tucked up in bed by 9pm Maybe just the WB again! The group all dashed back to the hotel in buses and after quick showers and a change, they adjourned to the adjacent premises to watch the Champions Cup Final sprinkled with copious pints of the ‘black stuff’ and pub grub. Some team called Liverpool had a fortunate win.

Day 4: The Island

did hand out a firm thrashing to the opposing Captain which seemed to be a very satisfactory outcome for Paul - not selfish at all then! Dev came last! Cian ‘This is my Job’ Hurley won the points on the day!

GOLF TRIP

GOLF TRIP

18

This is a beautiful parkland course in the middle of Dublin town. A weary bunch fell off the bus already wearing four layers of clothing. Dazza ‘The Original’ Cole had to be different and wear six layers; he looked like the Michelin man and snivelled and whined like a little girl all the way round. Luckily, we started the day with a couple of fine pints of the ‘black stuff’. Dazza was the leader in his fourball after nine holes and dead last in the group after 18. There was an altercation on the last hole that sent the young lad over the edge. He hit his second shot down to the water on the par 5, 18th hole. Young Prosser hit an almost identical shot, but there was some confusion when they came to identify the balls. They were using the same type of ball, right down to both having Dazza’s quite obvious personal mark. Prosser burst into a fit of girly giggles, and confessed that he had lost zero balls, as he had been stealing them out of Dazza’s bag all day. Young Black and Prosser took the money in the fourball, but we never heard the end of it for the rest of the day/ trip. Captain Paul pulled a rabbit out of the hat and shot an unbelievable 41 points on the day which was exceptional golf given the wintery conditions. Dev was last, as Tracey was a noshow. Cian ‘This is my job’ Hurley was second last. This really is your job Cian! All tucked up in bed by 8pm

Are you joking WB! What a night it was! Up the mountains in a bus to the highest pub in Ireland, where the whole group was treated to a night of Irish music and dancing ( the group on stage - most certainly not the guys on tour!) and absolutely unending supplies of the black stuff and other tipples!! A fitting end to the tour!!

the good by the time he was reunited with his clubs. This is all, of course, speculation and can only be confirmed by the man himself. Captain Paul and his group packed in after nine holes. Only two groups were man enough to finish the round so it was therefore decided to scrap the points for the day in case the Captain would be negatively affected in his plight to win his own event. If counted, the resilient Tom Barry would have won the day, with Cian ‘This is my Job’ Hurley coming a close second. Well done to those who soldiered on. Shame on you to those who bottled it (Mark Thomson from Canada?). Dev would have been second last to Mike “One Hole’ Tracey. All tucked up in bed by 9pm The WB that was! We tourists all convened for a fantastic dinner with vino in a wonderful restaurant called Peploes on St. Stephens Green. A long night but so worth it! Much later - back to bed!

In summary, the group seemed to have a great time in Ireland, the country that was apparently invented by the Scots. There were 24 people thrown together; some were friends before, some only nodded heads in the past but it was clear that all were friends by the end of the trip, which was special to see (from afar). We lost some people over the course of the week due to family issues, illness, broken heart (Moody Dave), but all in the trip will be marked down as a roaring success. Bring it on Vice-Captain Ishu - you have some work to do to beat this. PS - Unbeknown to the Wee Blogger, an advance party had arrived a day early and managed to play at the famous Old Portmarnock golf course which was in tip top condition as it was due to hold the Amateur Open there a couple of weeks afterwards. A day with little rain but with gale force 3-4 club winds which, even so, led to some “reasonable” scores, the best being from, appropriately, the member who was good enough to introduce us as guests. A pleasant surprise was meeting the relatively new Club Manager, none other than Andrew Whitelaw, Emirates Golf Club previous Club Manager! - who obliged us with a photo with the group!! A wonderful dinner at Paul’s Mum’s house followed the golf. Thank you Patsy!

Ladies’ Trip to Vietnam 2019

21 by Marie Benson

What a time we had on the Emirates Golf Club ladies’ golf tour to Vietnam! From start to finish it was fun, fun, fun, with everyone getting truly involved in, not only the golf, but also experiencing the culture, shopping, tailors (almost everyone had something made!) and Vietnamese food, all of which was excellent. Many of us tried the Pho, Vietnamese breakfast soup consisting of noodles and chicken or pork, which was an excellent start to the day, and set us up for our rounds of golf. We played three rounds of golf on very different courses…some tougher than others, some prettier than others and some in better condition than others, but all in all, a fun three rounds for our tour competitions. When the official tour was over, we all went our separate ways, some going straight back to Dubai, and others heading

off to explore more of Vietnam. Six of us, Catherine, Maribel, Mags, Phyllis, Jenny and myself all headed to Hanoi for one night before a four-hour minibus journey to Halong Bay. We had an adventurous 24 hours on board our cruise ship, where we were able to kayak around some of the spectacular islands in the bay, sail through a fishing village built on stilts, visit a pearl farm, take a Tai Chi class at sunrise on the top of the ship, and even have a competition with all of the guests to make the best spring roll. Suffice to say, two Asian ladies won that competition! On departing from Halong Bay, Phyllis and Maribel headed off to Ninh Binh and the rest of us returned to Hanoi for the next leg of our exciting adventure, and what an adventure that was. Catherine found a tour to explore Hanoi on the back of WW2 motor bikes and experiencing

Hanoi the way the locals do. We raced around town, dodging cars, bikes and tuc-tucs, visiting traditional eateries; one particularly interesting one was when we were standing on the railway line on a bridge, having a beer in train street, and having to quickly pack our chairs away and stand in doorways to avoid being hit by the train! The whole experience was truly exhilarating. We all said our goodbyes that evening as Jenny headed back to Singapore and Mags to Dubai the following morning. Catherine and I then set off for Ho Chi Minh City. The weather was more inclement here than in the north. Instead of visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels, as planned, we visited the War Remnants Museum which was rather harrowing to say the least.

The following day we visited the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation. We were met by Piers who gave a very informative insight into the background of the Foundation and Christina’s life. We were then given a tour of the facility and shown first hand some of the amazing work the Foundation does every day. From health care and education to nutritional rehabilitation and vocational training, CNCF offers a lifeline to so many children in impoverished communities. The Foundation also acts as an orphanage for approximately twenty babies and toddlers who had been abandoned on the streets, some due to having disabilities caused by Agent Orange. We were privileged to be allowed to interact with these precious children. This is one very special haven, and what a reality check for Catherine and myself. It was one of the most uplifting experiences of our lives. Please go and check out the website . https://www.cncf. org/ . During our last evening together with the entire golf tour group, Sulafa

informed everyone that we would be visiting the CNCF and that we should take a donation from the ladies. We were fortunate to be able to donate $1060 to the foundation, which was very gratefully received. After Ho Chi Minh City, we flew to Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Immediately we felt rather uncomfortable and, true to what the guide books had said, it was not a place to wander around on your own! We took a ten-hour tour which took us to the famous Killing Fields and S-21 Prison, now Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, established by the Khmer Rouge, (both too sad for words). Our tour continued on a lighter note with a boat trip past the floating villages and a stop at the village of Prek Bongkong on Silk Island where we visited a family of a mother and three daughters who made, spun and wove their own silk products…it was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours, chatting to the ladies and even trying our hand at weaving! To end the tour we enjoyed a pleasant sunset sail

down part of the Mekong River. Next was a five hour private car ride to Siem Reap, home to the very beautiful and famous National Heritage site of Angkor Wat. As photo opportunites go, this trip was simply incredible, stunning, spectacular….every superlative I can think of! On another note, and something I cannot miss out here, we found a fabulous little eatery, where we had the tastiest fish amok, a traditional Cambodian dish, accompanied by salad and a couple of bottles of water, where the total bill was…. $9! And so our adventure was almost at an end…one more flight to Hanoi, a night and a day in Hanoi, and then our final flight back to Dubai. I cannot thank Sulafa enough for choosing Vietnam for this year’s ladies’ golf tour. I would never have explored Vietnam and Cambodia the way I did if it hadn’t been for Sulafa with this choice of destination, and also Catherine with her adventurous spirit and choice of destinations and tours. Thank you so much both of you for the adventure of a lifetime.

Golf Course Superintendent going forward. Huge credit to the team and the hours they put it, was long days leading up to and during and they all did Emirates Golf Club proud. After the tournament we started to switch our focus to transition on the courses and project works. Transition has slowly started and the encouragement of Bermuda grass on the Majlis is well under way. You may have seen sand being put down in rough areas and this is there to help the Bermuda grow and move into their sparse areas. On the project side of things we have started to increase the size of the members tee at the end of the Driving range. Now we have only one range we wanted to increase this in size so we can accommodate more people and spread wear.

What a few months we have had with the season coming to an end and the Omega Dubai Moonlight Classic on the Faldo course. Everyone at GCM hopes you had a great season and enjoyed the courses that we have prepared for you during that time. The Moonlight Classic was an event we were looking forward to as we know how good the Faldo course can be. The preparation that went in to it was very much like the Desert Classic on the Majlis, with bunkers being brought up to standard and a lot of extra cuts

to all areas on the golf course. The greens and fairways especially showed what a great looking golf course it is. The greens were running at 11.8 on the stimp meter which worked out well as everybody loved the increase from the normal speeds we get on the course. This isn’t easy to do though with us performing 6 to 8 cuts a day on them and 4 rolls. Paspalum grass, which is the grass on the Faldo, does need a lot work to get speed, but happy we got there in the end. The fairways were the best I have ever seen them, and want to keep such standards high for them

We will also be changing the chipping green this summer and re designing it so we have more space to chip and also change the grass to the same as the Majlis course so we have some consistency when chipping. This will mean the chipping green will be closed for a few months but we are planning to let you chip around the Faldo putting green so there is somewhere to practice this. Thanks again for the great feedback we have been getting on the courses, this always gets passed on to the team and great motivation to continue presenting courses to the highest standards. Happy Golfing!

After my first season at Emirates Golf Club, I have taken pen to paper to provide a perspective from inside the ropes! Firstly what an incredibly busy and fun place to be! There is never a dull moment for sure and there’s always something exciting happening or about to happen. The teamwork required to facilitate the smooth running of such a hectic calendar is incredible! On a number of occasions, it has been said to me that the marshals should be empowered to be more influential on the course. In parallel I have read a number of articles (in this fantastic magazine!), from the Club Management team confirming that the marshals have the full backing of management and, as such, are their representatives on the course. Unfortunately, personal experiences have shown me that the missing ingredient is respect. On many occasions I have witnessed and have been subjected to a lack of respect from a number of players. On approaching a group in a red marshal buggy, and before being able to speak some players will say, “Don’t speak to me!” or “We’re ahead of schedule” or “What are you doing about the group in front?”…before the marshal can say a word he is being disrespected. Please believe me when I say, the marshal can be your best friend on the course if you would just allow him to do his job. The constant radio communications between all marshals ensure that there is absolutely no one better placed to understand what is going on over the golf course at any particular time. “Don’t talk to me” Why? You don’t know what he’s going to say. As an example there are so many belongings misplaced on the course every day that he might just be trying to source a lost item or ask if you would be so kind to look out for something (remember it might be you who loses something one day)

“We’re ahead of schedule” Excellent if you are aware of the expected pace of play and that you are playing to those expectations; however, please remember, your position on the course is behind the group in front you. If they have pulled away and there is a gap, you may be causing a bottleneck that holds up the course behind you.... the marshal knows what is happening on all the holes. “We started on a par 5 and the group in front started on a par 3.... we will always be one hole adrift.... don’t talk to me” This was said by someone who was two and a half holes behind the group in front. “What are you doing about the group in front?” The marshal will treat everyone in a consistent manner and will know what is happening in front of you and behind you. If asked, he will be able to provide an insight as to what is happening ahead and it may be even two or three holes in front where the issue is.... you can be assured he will be working to improve the situation with his colleagues. I know that many of you have formed good relationships with the marshals over the years and as such, you realise that they are genuinely helpful, happy and positive team members who only want to assist you in having an enjoyable round of golf in fantastic surroundings.

I am so proud to be part of such a wonderful team but it is pitiful when I see how some people speak to them. Etiquette! All I will say here is that a golfer should never leave a bunker in such a condition - this is appalling. If you’re playing with someone who does this, please remind them it’s not acceptable. In the new season we will try to put measures in place to stop this behaviour. A true golfer would never leave a bunker without raking it or a pitch mark not repaired. This photo was taken on the Majlis 17th fairway bunker on Thursday 30th May at midday...... if you did this you should be thoroughly embarrassed. I am already looking forward to starting again on 1st September ready for the new season. Hopefully my observations have struck a note with some of you and you might reconsider how you interact with your marshals; we have a great team who (given the chance) can make your round as pleasurable as possible; between them they have over 150 years of experience at Emirates Golf Club. You will find me either in and around the Majlis starter hut or out on the course Sunday to Thursday and occasionally at weekends. Enjoy your summer and see you again from 1st September.

C) Ball Forward

A) Ball Back

The ball position closest to my back/ trail foot creates a more forward shaft lean. This is the traditional way we play the chip shot. The angle of attack is steeper and swing arc width shorter at the bottom of the swing and can dig into the ground easier. The outcome is a low launch ball flight and the ball rolling across the green. I would use this shot to flags placed with plenty of distance from the edge green.

B) Ball in Centre

The ball is directly in the middle of my stance and has its natural shaft lean the way the club has been designed. The angle of attack is shallower and swing arc width medium at the bottom of the swing. The bottom of the club doesn’t dig in, but bruises the ground. The outcome is a mid launch ball flight and the ball stopping within 4 or 5 yards of landing. I use this for all types of flag positions especially when the flag is closer to the edge of the green.

The ball position closest to my front/ lead foot creates the least shaft lean. This is a slightly more high tariff position and can unnerve some golfers. The angle of attack is very shallow and swing arc width wide at the bottom of the swing. The ability to hold the club shallow and wide through impact is the skill to develop here. The bottom of the club should glide across the ground. The outcome is a high launch ball flight and the ball stopping within 2 or 3 yards of landing. Can be used for all flags especially flags tucked away in corners or behind bunkers. Hit five balls from each position trying to feel the changes. Then hit one ball from each position as you get better, generating a more realistic scenario.

Dear Members,

FIT LAB

For the last 18 months, under Andy’s guidance, I have been operating the recreation facilities at Dubai Creek

Born and bred in Edinburgh, fitness and exercise has been my life. From a sporting background, I played football competitively at a part-time level until I moved to Dubai two years ago, and now I will generally play any sport that is available to me. I bring with me over 16 years of experience in the fitness industry, and I have previously owned and run my own Personal Training & Massage Company. More recently, I have overseen a lovely new extension to our Creek gym facility, and I have been working hard making other

changes to the leisure area, including new sun loungers and freshening up the pool surroundings. There won’t be any immediate changes to the facilities here at Emirates Golf Club, however, I will look at continuing the fantastic work that Andy has done over the years as well as bringing a new look and a few of my own ideas to freshen things up. I hope that you are all enjoying a fantastic summer, and whether you are travelling, or you are hard at work here in Dubai, I hope your fitness levels are being maintained! I look forward to meeting you all! Dougie Sports & Leisure Executive

Six reasons why you should row 1 – Rows develop back thickness like nothing else. The lats have a unique muscle fibre orientation that’s neither completely horizontal nor completely vertical. Instead, they have a diagonal muscle fibre orientation good for both vertical and horizontal pulling. To maximise development of the lats, it’s best to pull vertically (chinups, pulldowns, etc.) and horizontally with row variations for maximum hypertrophy. So by rowing with both volume and load, you’ll maximally develop thickness in the lats. 2 - Rows allow you to practice the hip hinge. The hip hinge is a primal movement pattern that deserves a place in every good training routine. The hinge is vital to maximise lifting performance on deadlifts, swings, Olympic exercises that build high performance muscle, and strength in general. The supinated or underhand grip bentover row, however, reinforces the ideal hip hinge position, helping you load the glutes and hamstrings for hypertrophy and developing explosive hip extension for maximum power in exercises like sprinting, jumping, and cleans. 3 – Rows make you a better deadlifter. The most common sticking point in the deadlift is below the knee, which is the same position you hold while performing barbell bent-over rows. During the deadlift, most lifters that get stuck below the knee are either using too much weight or they lack the trunk and core stability to hold the position. They end up rounding the spine and collapsing into a ball of fail. It’s not worth the risk to miss a lift and risk a flexion-based back injury due to lazy technique. Instead, use rows in general to reinforce technique under load and hold position to keep the lumbar spine out of excessive flexion. Not only will you protect your spine, you’ll turn a previous weakness into a strong point and develop a bigger deadlift. 4 – Rows reinforce stability in the hinge position. You have to maintain a flat back position when you row. In most cases, this means the bar is situated close to the body and slightly below the base of the knee from the hinge position to reduce shear stress. To prevent lumbar flexion, you’ll need to brace the abs and hold that position while driving the elbows back and pulling the bar to your torso, building a resilient core in the process. 5 – Underhand bent-over rows are an awesome biceps builder. You want bigger arms? The underhand

grip requires significant work from the biceps and provides higher direct loading than any isolation exercise. Since most guys train the biceps with lighter, higher-rep sets, they’re not placing the muscles under a lot of tension to spur new growth. Underhand Barbell Row While metabolic stress and longduration sets play a role in hypertrophy, it’s important to stimulate fast-twitch fibres with heavy loads. The underhand bent-over row does a good job of this. 6 – Underhand rows allow for higher training loads. The supinated grip makes you as much as one-third stronger due to increased activation of the biceps. Using heavier weight will provide greater overload in the primary pulling muscles. In other words, you’ll build greater strength in the traps, rhomboids, lats, and biceps due to greater training loads. How to Underhand Row: Grab the bar/handle with a double underhand grip, slightly outside shoulder width. Hinge over by pushing your hips back with the abs braced and shoulders retracted to weld your spine. The bar should sit slightly below the knee as long as the lower back stays flat and the trunk engaged.

may struggle to hold a pain-free position with a loaded barbell in front of the body. It’s essential to pull the bar tight to the body, brace the abs to ensure neutral spine, and eliminate body English to minimise problems due to shear stress. Also, be conservative if programming heavy rows with squats and deadlifts in the same workout.

27 FIT LAB

As you may have noticed, it’s a different picture from what you may be used to at the top of this page, and since the launch of Club Life, possibly the first time anyone other than Andy has contributed to the Fit Lab pages. Everyone moves on at some point in life, and for Andy, after 17 excellent years at Dubai Golf, 2019 was his year for a change of scenery. Andy has been a massive part of the growth that Emirates has seen over the years and I know he was a friend to many of you and will be sorely missed.

Golf & Yacht Club and I am delighted to now be a part of the Emirates family. Initially, I will be splitting my time between the two clubs and I intend to spend around three days a week here at Emirates Golf Club.

Pulling the body to the bar instead of pulling the bar to the body. Let your muscles lift the weight, not your ego. Most lifters have a tendency to excessively load the bar and end up using way too much momentum to move weight. While their intentions may be good, losing position, raising the chest, flexing the spine, and doing total body convulsions to complete the lift do more harm than good. Hold solid joint position, drop the weight a bit, and train what you mean to train! Pulling the elbows too far back. When rowing in general, some lifters pull the bar too far past mid-line. While you might feel a better “squeeze” in the muscles, the humerus may migrate forward into the anterior socket of the shoulder, potentially causing impingement and dysfunction.

EXERCISE TIP OF THE MONTH

Drive the elbows back until they’re even with your body and the bar nears your abdomen. Remember to stick your chest out while pulling the shoulders down and back. Squeeze for maximal muscular contraction for a one-count, and then slowly lower the weight under control to the starting position. Overall, it’s imperative to hold position with eccentric control and stability through the trunk while the limbs are moving – a true function of a strong core. Potential Issues with the Row Shear stress on the spine. Lifters with flexionbased back injuries

What you need to know... Supinated grip (underhand) rows require significant work from the biceps and allow higher direct loading than any biceps isolation exercise. The underhand grip makes you as much as one-third stronger due to increased activation of the biceps. Supinated-grip rows build a powerful core, as you need to brace the abs and hold position while pulling the bar to your torso. Rows allow you to reinforce technique under load and hold position, which reinforces deadlift performance. Rows reinforce the ideal hip hinge position, helping you load the glutes and hamstrings for hypertrophy and develop explosive hip extension for exercises like sprinting, jumping, and cleans. Rows (of any variation) are a great exercise to address common technique weaknesses and flaws such as trunk stability and strength in the hinge position. However, when you do them with a supinated (underhand) grip, there’s a greater overload stimulus on the biceps and you turn conventional barbell rows into an exercise that truly has a strong purpose.

Available in Spike Bar for only AED 47 Ingredients: Gin 50ml Elderflower Syrup 30ml Lime or lemon fresh Juice 20ml Mint 12 leaves Soda water 120ml Garnish: lime wedge and mint

I like to use a highball glass, but feel free to use your favourite one. Add the elderflower cordial, lime juice, mint leaves and your favourite gin to the glass. I like Bombay Sapphire but Gordon’s is wonderful too. Top with ice and soda water and stir well to combine. A sprig of mint and a lime wedge is a beautiful finish though it is not necessary, although I think it does add another wonderful dimension.

RHYS RULES BY

As we approach the end of our golfing season I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you a reminder of the 20 major changes that took place from 1st January 2019. I hope you have all enjoyed playing under the new rules so far, please continue to read and take an interest in them over the summer as many of the changes are linked to simplifying and speeding up the game, which in the long run will have a positive impact on our sport.

Relief Area: The area where you must drop a ball when taking relief under a rule.

Firstly, to help with the understanding of the rule changes, here are some newly defined terms that can be found in the ‘definitions’ section of the rule book.

3. You must now drop in and play from the relief area. When taking a drop, you must always have a reference point. From there you will measure the one or two club lengths in which to drop. That radius will be your “relief area” that the ball must stay within; if it rolls out then it should be re-dropped a second time before then being placed.

Embedded: When your ball is in its own pitchmark made as a result of your previous stroke and where part of the ball is below the level of the ground. General Area: The area of the course that covers all of the course except for the other four defined areas: (1) The teeing ground of the hole you are playing, (2) all penalty areas, (3) all bunkers, (4) the putting green of the hole you are playing. *previously defined as ‘Through the Green’. Penalty Area: An area from which relief with a one stroke penalty is allowed if your ball comes to rest there. There are yellow penalty areas = two relief options (previously known as a yellow water hazard)

2. Measure the area in which to drop your ball with the longest club in your bag (except a putter). When taking a drop, the size of the relief area will always be measured by the longest club in your bag, except your putter, whether one or two club lengths, depending on the type of relief being taken. However, you don’t need to actually use your longest club for this and then go back to your bag to get a pitching wedge, for example. If the longest club in your bag for the round is 43 inches then a club length is 43 inches for you for that round.

20 MUST KNOW RULE CHANGES:

16. In bunkers you cannot touch the sand with your club in the area right in front of or right behind your ball, during your backswing or in taking practice swings. Despite the rules in a bunker being relaxed (as 15 above) you STILL CANNOT touch the sand with your club near the ball or make a practice swing.

7. No penalty for a double hit – it only counts as one stroke. (Good news for those with the dreaded golfing yips…)

17. Free relief is allowed if your ball is embedded on the fairway or in the rough (but ‘embedded’ means that part of your ball is below the level of the ground). This rule has been extended to all ‘General Areas’ that include both the fairway and the rough. This has been introduced as an embedded ball lying anywhere is not considered part of the normal challenge of playing golf.

8. No penalty if your ball hits you or your equipment accidentally after a stroke. If your ball hits you, your bag, your cart (equipment) after making a stroke you must then just play the ball as it lies for your next stroke. 9. No penalty if your ball strikes the flagstick when you have chosen to leave it in the hole. You can now choose to have the flagstick left in as well as attended or removed. Your intention must be clearly stated before putting, you cannot change your intentions once the stroke has been made and the ball is in motion.

12. Ball marked, lifted and replaced on putting green is moved by wind to another position – replace ball on original spot. If your ball is moved by an outside agency such as wind or any other natural forces such as a slope then: If you had not marked your ball yet then play from its new position. If you had marked the ball and replaced it then replace the ball back on the same spot.

1. You must now drop your ball from knee height (NOT shoulder height). A simple one to understand and to do. The aim is that dropping from a lower height will result in less re-drops from the ball bouncing and rolling too far away.

There are red penalty areas = three relief options (previously known as a red lateral water hazard)

4. When dropping back on the line, your ball cannot be played from nearer the hole than your chosen reference point. If taking relief by going back in line with the flag (example: penalty area or unplayable ball), you must identify a mark on that line to measure your ‘relief area’; once that mark is identified and the ball is dropped you cannot play if the ball rolls nearer the hole and out in front of your measured “relief area”. *connected to point 3 above. 5. Time to search – 3 minutes (NOT 5 minutes). Search time reduced from 5 to 3 minutes. As before, your time starts when the player, his/ her caddie, partner or partner’s caddie begins to search for it. The reason for the change is obviously to speed up play but, based on the assumption that if a ball is to be found, it will normally be found sooner rather than later.

18. Unplayable ball in bunker – extra option to drop outside the bunker for TWO penalty strokes. By going back as far as you want in line with the flag outside of the bunker, but this will cost you two strokes. Previously you could only drop outside of the bunker by going back to where you played your last stroke for only a one stroke penalty, but that could have meant going back 150 yards, for example.

13. Penalty areas replace water hazards and you can move loose impediments, ground your club and take practice swings in penalty areas, just as you can on the fairway or in the rough. A big change that now allows us to act the same in a penalty area as we can on the fairway or rough as listed above. No longer do we need to panic about grounding the club or touching or moving anything. 14. You can’t take relief from a penalty area unless you are at least 95% certain your ball is in the penalty area. The number 95% has been introduced in line with being ‘known or virtually certain’ that your ball is in a penalty area. If there is still a small doubt, the ball is deemed as lost. 15. In bunkers you can remove loose impediments. The rules have been relaxed to allow you to remove leaves, twigs, stones or any other loose impediments in a bunker. So no longer do you need to check the back of a scorecard for the local rules to see if stones are movable obstructions in bunkers.

31

Recommendations are: • To be more prompt in preparing for and making each stroke i.e. BE READY • To be more prompt in moving from one stroke to the next i.e. WALK FASTER • To be more prompt in moving to the next teeing ground after completing a hole i.e. CLEAR THE GREEN IMMEDIATELY

When it is your turn to play: • 40 seconds is the maximum recommended time per stroke. This time begins when you are free to play without any interference or distractions

10. Spike marks and other shoe damage on the putting green can be repaired. If your ball lies ON or OFF the putting green you are entitled to repair any damages such as spike marks, shoe marks, animal damage, turf plugs and seams of cut turf. The fixing and repairs must be done promptly and must not improve the line of play beyond the repair of the initial damage. 11. Accidentally move the ball on the putting green? There is no penalty and the ball is replaced. If there is any accidental movement of the ball or ball marker by yourself or anyone else then simply replace the ball or ball marker with NO PENALTY.

able to play quicker than that) and READY GOLF in stroke play is encouraged. The rules now emphasise a prompt pace of play. The rule reminds golfers that their pace of play will affect how long it takes others to play their rounds, both in their group and those in the groups behind.

RHYS

Rules of Golf THE NEW RULES OF GOLF TOP 20 MUST KNOW REMINDERS

6. If you accidentally move your ball when searching for it, replace it without penalty. A fair change to this rule that there is now NO PENALTY if you move your ball whilst searching for it. If moved, the ball should be replaced. If the spot is unknown you must estimate it, and when placing the ball try to recreate the lie of the ball as much as possible.

RULES BY

30

Playing out of turn: • Is allowed in stroke play; you are now allowed to play out of turn in a SAFE and responsible way to save time…also known as Ready Golf! • In matchplay, you can play out of turn IF AGREED between both players to save time. I appreciate the above can be a lot to take in all at once, please take some time to digest just a couple of the changes at a time. At each Club event you will be given the list of these 20 key changes as a reminder for you whilst on course; the new rule books, which I’m pleased to say have been simplified, and now include diagrams to make easier to understand are also readily available at the Club. Please don’t worry or stress about the new changes this is a great opportunity to grasp a better understanding of the modernised rules of golf and we, at the Club, are here to help you to do that.

19. You cannot have your caddie or your partner standing behind you once you begin taking your stance. Therefore no assistance can be given with a player’s alignment by anyone. The player must rely on his own skill to get this correct. 20. Pace of Play – it is recommended that you have no longer than 40 seconds to make a stroke (and usually you should be
