Al Dobowi Mixed Amateur Open

Winners: Najla & Pascal Bartette

MEN’S SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP Winner: Paul Byrne

LADIES’ SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP Winner: Yana Jamieson

Past Captain, Paul Byrne, who only qualified for the Seniors last year, produced a fantastic score of 73 gross to win the event, followed closely by another ‘young senior’, Darren Cole, who unfortunately found the water on the 18th hole to come in with a 75 gross, securing runner-up position. In the ladies’ section, Lady Captain (another newly turned senior) produced an excellent score of 84 to win the seniors on a count-back from Mitsuko Emmerson. Well done to all. Do we not have a super-seniors event yet? Maybe something to look into for those of us who are well over the 50 or 60 mark ! Emirates Golf Club ladies’ section raised a remarkable AED 120,000 for ‘Brest Friends’ charity which was a great effort by members who donated prizes and/or bought raffle tickets leading up to the Pink Golf Day. Well done to Lady Captain Yana and to Lady Vice-Captain Naema for the enormous amount of work they put in to make this event such a success.

Thankfully, we have now got to the best time of the year weather-wise with perfect temperatures during the day and that little ‘coolness’ in the air early morning and late evening. There’s nowhere better at this time of the year! Not only do we have the great weather, but we also have many events coming up, including the DP World Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates 21st-24th November which features the top 50 finishers on the European Tour at this season-ending event. The Race to Dubai, spanning 47 tournaments in 31 countries across four continents, is a season-long competition to crown the European Tour’s number one player. As we head towards the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in January, the Majlis course will be a walking course only. Make use of the many caddies available who all work in various departments within the Club who are willing to work as caddies on their day off. Please book in advance through Ummer or Jega as the caddies are in great demand during our winter period. Enjoy the experience it’s certainly the best way to play golf. Enjoy our courses, the wonderful weather, everything the Club has to offer in terms of social events, golf and also the recreation and spa side of the Club…we are truly well looked after so make the most of it all! Happy Diwali to all those celebrating.

The month of October was exceptionally busy when we had with some of the season’s ‘major’ events, namely, the BMW Open, the Al Dobowi Mixed Amateur Open, the Men’s and Ladies’ Seniors Championships, the Ladies’ Pink Day when funds were raised for breast cancer charity ‘Brest Friends’, as well as the Monthly Medals and fun competitions. There were some excellent results so congratulations to all. The Mixed Amateur Open was, as usual, a very well subscribed event; of course this event happens thanks to Al Dobowi and especially Surender Kandhari and family who continue to support this, not only through sponsorship but on a very personal level also. It is not an easy format so well done to all those who played and hopefully, if you played with your spouse, you’re still on speaking terms. It’s al-ways a great event and the taking part and being so well looked after makes the ‘stressful format’ worthwhile!

5 A busy month culminated with the Ladies’ Pink Ball Golf Tournament on 28th October. It is always a highlight of the season and a massive thank you to all members and sponsors who contributed in raising approximately AED 120,000 for the Al Jalila foundation to support breast cancer. Congratulations to the ladies’ section headed by Lady Captain, Yana Jamieson, for showing such passion and commitment for an excellent cause. As we move into November we also transition into the walking period on the Majlis golf course. Please be reminded that the Majlis course is walking only from 3rd - 20th November; carts are then allowed from 21st November to 3rd December. We have reduced the walking period by two weeks this season following feedback from the membership. The Majlis course will be closed for overseeding on 4th and 5th December; following the re-opening, the Majlis will be walking only from 6th December until 5th February 2020.

Caddies at Emirates Golf

As many of you will be aware there are no full time caddies at Emirates Golf Club. The caddie programme is made up of all Emirates Golf Club colleagues, who show a desire to fulfil the role, attend a training programme and pass a test. Our caddies include colleagues from all departments including Golf Operations, Golf Course Maintenance, Food and Beverage, Recreation and more. A number of the colleagues have caddied for five to 20 years and perform the role fantastically, as you may agree. We do admit however, that the caddie programme (as it is not a full-time service) is not positioned the same, as for example, the caddie programme at St Andrews. As a result, members and guests may well experience differing levels of skill and experience from caddie to caddie For the 2019-2020 season we will be introducing a Caddie Feedback programme. The main aim of this strategy is to improve the quality

of caddies and also to differentiate between a caddie and a bag carrier. From November onwards we will be asking all members and guests to rate their caddie by allocating a score between 1 and 5 (5 being very good). Our caddie master (Ummer or Jega) will inform you if you have a caddie or a bag carrier in advance of play. The caddie fee for the coming season will be AED 160 per round and for a bag carrier AED 130. Please note, we will use the feedback to improve the caddies and the service we provide. Following your round you will receive the caddies I.D card and we will ask you to return it to a feedback box, scoring the colleague between 1-5. For any marks of 1 or 2 out of 5 please complete the small feedback form so we can improve and train the individual. As this is a new scheme, all colleagues who have passed our caddie test will start the season as a caddie. Please note that an Emirates Golf Club caddie would be expected to fulfil the following: • Have a good level of English • Improve your experience on the course • Keep up with play • Be well presented • Knowledgeable of facilities (F&B stations, toilets etc.) • Know the course layout • Know the driving lines off the tee box • Perform caddie functions including:cleaning clubs/ball, raking bunkers, repair pitch marks, fill divots, provide yardages to the pin using the on-course markers • Carries clubs • Assist with ball searches • Adds to the enjoyment of the round • Not a distraction to anyone in the group NOTE we don’t expect caddies to read putts on the greens but many will if asked. We don’t expect caddies to know the Rules of Golf We don’t expect caddies to club a player (recommend what club to use based on a golfer’s ability)

Single Use Plastic

will be provided to you prior to your round at the driving range. Your refillable flask should become part of your golf equipment moving forward. If you forget the bottle then the paper cups on course can be used at the igloo stations for your hydration. Please see some FAQ’s regarding the campaign: Why is Dubai Golf launching this scheme across Emirates Golf Club, Dubai Creek, Golf & Yacht Club and Jumeirah Golf Estates? 40% of all plastic produced is used just once 15 minutes is the average lifespan of single-use plastic 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans each year 200,000 bottles at Emirates Golf Club alone will be cut by launching this initiative

What if I lose my bottle?

We have ordered superior stainless steel bottles for our members. Unfortunately if you lose the bottle then a replacement will have to be purchased from our Pro Shop. Note, we will continue to provide paper cups on the course as standard. If I bring a guest to play every week do they receive an aluminium visitor bottle for every game? No, the objective is for regular visitors to bring their golf club water bottle every time they play, the same as our members. Note, if you have a visitor who plays all three clubs then they will receive a bottle from each club.

You will notice the construction hoardings to the left of the main entrance. We will soon be commencing the extension to the back-of-house facility of our Carine restaurant. This construction will eventually result in a larger kitchen to support the increasing covers of our popular restaurant plus support functions. Note we don’t anticipate any closure to the restaurant during this initial construction period. Carine will be open as usual. The works will be completed by the summer of 2020 when a small closure will facilitate the extension.

have always had a section where you can report feedback to the Members’ Consultative Committee but we have now added a section for Colleague Recognition. If a colleague excels and exceeds your expectations out of their ‘normal routine’ we would welcome you to log onto the Member Zone and record the name, department of the individual’s and what they did. We will use this information to recognise our star performers.

Etiquette on our Courses

Recognition of Colleagues

Internally Emirates Golf Club has always had a system in place to recognise colleagues who exceed the expectations of members and guests and occasionally provide that WOW, above and beyond, experience or service. Following discussions with our Club Captain, Ishu Rupani, we have decided to provide an electronic platform so that our members can provide feedback on colleagues who excel. It is important that these acts are reported so that we can acknowledge and reward colleagues, in addition to motivating them to strive for service excellence. On the Member Zone we

In last month’s Club Life I discussed the crisis that is golf etiquette across the Majlis and Faldo. The marshals have witnessed, reported and distributed yellow cards to four individuals over the past three weeks all for NOT RAKING BUNKERS. Three of them were members and one was a guest … SO YES IT IS OUR MEMBERSHIP that is guilty. I personally

witnessed one incident and it was an example of disgraceful behaviour on our Faldo course in terms of bunker behaviour. One member said... “I didn’t know I had to” and another said “I normally do”. Please note we will be clamping down on this issue to try and eradicate this problem. Please note, for those of you who maybe misunderstand the RULES OF GOLF, if your ball ends up in a footprint you have to play the ball as it lies. If you move the ball to a flat lie and play the shot it is an immediate two shot penalty. This is why it is so important to rake bunkers and care for YOUR COURSE. Please don’t be the next member to receive a disciplinary letter from me, I don’t want to get to a stage where we publish names in Club Life!

Happy golfing! Barney Coleman Club Manager

Members’ Consultative Committee

Is the water offered on the course, at the igloo stations, mineral water (e.g. Oasis or Masafi)? No, Emirates Golf Club do not supply mineral water on the course. The water is from DEWA and is softened and filtered on site. We test the water periodically to make sure it is perfectly safe to drink. Are the water igloos left out overnight? No, the marshal team within Golf Operations set-up the water igloos each morning, maintain them throughout the day and then remove them each night in preparation for the next morning. Our marshals make sure the igloos are clean before they go out the following day.

Car Parking

Our new refillable flasks for members and guests, sponsored by Dell Technologies, will arrive in Dubai on 15th November. As soon as these are received and personalised we will distribute and STOP all supply of plastic bottles at the driving range/cart staging area. This campaign will be adopted at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club and Jumeirah Golf Estates also. To reiterate, NO PLASTIC BOTTLE

Carine Kitchen Extension

We are now hitting peak season at the Club and we acknowledge that there are many non-members on site especially at the weekends. We are in constant communication with the yoga participants to force them to park in the Par 3 car park and, over the past two weekends, our security guard has been instructing vehicles without member car stickers to park in the overflow car park. Please assist us with this policy by displaying your member sticker in the window of your car. If you haven’t got one please ask the membership team to provide one. We feel that this will increase the number of spaces for members in the main car park closest to the clubhouse.

The Members’ Consultative Committee (MCC) was formed as a result of Emirates Golf Club becoming a part of Dubai Real Estate Corporation (now known by its brand name ‘wasl’), and the management of both teams recognising the role that the Membership of the Club plays in its success, both financially and in creating a good ‘Club spirit’. As such, a cross section of members were invited to take part in a Members’ Consultative Committee, which meets regularly to discuss the general

operation of the Club, to hear feedback from members, and to provide a link between members and management. We have created an online forum specifically for the purpose of enabling our members to: • Be able to view the minutes taken from each meeting and comment accordingly through a related message board. • Have the ability to contact any one of the Committee Members directly via email with your constructive comments and ideas.

Jayshree Gupta

• The Committee will not be involved in the actual administration or finances of the Club, but will concentrate on service and facilities, and how we, as managers, can best serve you as a member of the Club. This does not mean that the management team is no longer directly approachable - quite the reverse in fact, as we will continue to operate our ‘open door’ policy to ensure that every member has a voice and enjoys a sense of belonging to his or her Club.

6 Dear Members,

Captain’s Message

On 18th October we had our Men’s Seniors Championship won by the outgoing Captain Paul Byrne. He hit only five drives on the fairways yet had an amazing round of gross 73. Congratulations Paul on winning yet another trophy! On 19th October we had the Al Dobowi Emirates Mixed Amateur Open and this time it was my turn to take the runners-up trophy together with Shiba, my playing partner. Congratulations to Najla and Pascal Bartette on winning the tournament!

MEN’S COMPETITION RESULTS

Emirates Golf Club BMW Open 2019 FRIDAY 11TH OCTOBER 2019 On Friday October 11th, Emirates Golf Club hosted the 2019 BMW Open on the Faldo course. On a day of difficult scoring in humid conditions on the Faldo Course, it was Alberto Rubio from Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club who became the Champion with a remarkable score of 40 points! Alberto certainly impressed his fellow Spanish supporters, and he will now enjoy BMW Hospitality for the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates, set from 21st to 24th November. The runner-up was Jung Won Seo from Emirates Golf Club, who also scored 40 points but finished with an inferior back 9; however, he will also be attending the DP World tournament at Jumeirah Golf Estates. The third best result of the day, who received the last two hospitality passes for the DP World Tour Championship, were won by Beatrice Galeppini from Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club with a score of 39 points; this great performance made her the Lady Champion of this year’s BMW Open. In third place was Glory Xavier, also from the Creek, with a close score of 38 points. In A Division, Frederick Engelhardt just beat Mitsuko Emmerson to the title. Both members of Emirates Golf Club, Frederick’s 38 points total was one more than Mitsuko in a very close division of scoring. In B Division, Shiba Wahid was victorious with 37 points. Finishing one point behind Shiba, in the runner-up spot was Muhammad Siddiqui with 36 points. Liang Wei Liu claimed the winner’s prize in the Junior Division with her score of 36 points. A huge thank you goes to our sponsor Ayan Olcer, the CEO of AGMC - BMW for another fantastic tournament and for their continued support of Emirates Golf Club.

On 1st November it will be our Diwali Scramble and we are all looking forward to a fun filled day. In our last Members’ Consultative Committee (MCC) meeting our Course Superintendent Matthew Perry gave us a good briefing regarding the Majlis Course. Being a course without an effective drainage system, the Majlis course has done well overall so thanks to Matthew and his team. Let’s enjoy the good weather, the golf tournaments and more fun at the Club. Cheers

It has been an eventful month of October at the Club with so many tournaments.

Another exciting tournament on 28th October was the Ladies’ Pink Ball Charity competition which I am sure our Lady Captain Yana will write more about. Well done Yana for this competition and the funds being raised for breast cancer.

On Friday October 19th, Emirates Golf Club hosted the 2019 Mixed Amateur Open, sponsored by Infinity, powered by Al Dobowi, on the Majlis course. On a very enjoyable day for the 24th staging of this event and the challenging format of Greensomes, there was some very close scoring and almost nothing to separate the winners. The champions were Najla and Pascal Bartette, a formidable partnership for sure, who managed a team total of 68 net which saw them claim the winning trophies. The runners-up were Shiba Wahid and our Club Captain Ishu Rupani who carded an impressive 69 net. Only 0.2 strokes behind and finishing in third place, was the pairing of Hannah and Roy Alan, totalling 69.2 net with some very good golf! The best gross score was decided by a back 9 scorecard play-off, and it was Glory Xavier and Subhojit Biswas who claimed the title! A wonderful day was shared by all. A huge thank you goes to our sponsor Al Dobowi for another exceptional tournament and for their continued support of Emirates Golf Club. All of this would not be possible without Past Captain and long-term member, Mr. Surender Khandari. Congratulations to all players for taking part and to all winners on the day! It was also great to have everybody stay around for the dinner and prize-giving on the Members’ Terrace.

10 Well the Season Openers are behind us but I will always cherish the memories. October is the busiest month for the ladies and all the events were well attended. Unfortunately, during the past two years many of our ladies have moved out of Dubai and many new members have joined but, since many of them have only just started to play golf, they are reluctant to play Medals so we encourage them to play the Medal with the option to sign for the Stableford at the same time. Anita Jopp, who decided to play her first Medal last month, was not only in the prizes but she was also a winner of the Luckiest Ball on Earth (the chance to play in the DP World Tour Championship Pro-Am! Well done Anita! I hope this will encourage our new ladies to participate in every tournament! We had our first Inter-Club competition at Abu Dhabi National last month

Ladies’ Pink Day at Yas Links A large group of Emirates Golf Club ladies ventured to Abu Dhabi to play in their Pink Charity Day competition which was a very successful and enjoyable day. Thank you to the Yas Links ladies.

(a really long course for us) and we came second to the home team so that was a great effort and I would like to thank all the ladies who played. Last month was certainly the busiest month as Lady Captain as there was a lot of organising to do for the Pink Ball Charity Day. Over the years our Lady Captains have raised a considerable amount for a very worthy charity, which again this year was the Al Jalila Foundation and Brest Friends. 96 ladies teed off to support Breast Cancer Charity and we still had a number on the waiting list. Different events on the course made it more fun too! BMW sponsored the hole-inone giving all players the chance to win a Mini Cooper; Precision Golf LLC (Rohit Gupta) sponsored the putting competition. Golf was followed by an excellent lunch in Carine (thank you to the team at Carine) Thanks again to Barney, Cian, Nishanthi and the entire team for making this all work so perfectly for all the participants. Our members and guests were superb in donating over 100 raffle prizes and buying tickets. We even took advantage of selling extra tickets to the happy rugby fans when England beat the All Blacks (my favourite team, maybe because of the Haka). I would

especially like to thank our sponsors and main supporters: HSBC, INDIGO (Paul Kavanagh), EGA (Walid Al Attar), Falcon and Associates (Simon Corkill), Tom Luig and BMW for their generosity and kindness. For the first time in our history Emirates Golf Club featured in Times Square in New York as a message about Emirates Golf Club united with Nasdaq in the fight against breast cancer was beamed on the Nasdaq building. A big thank you for this to our member Michele Carlsson. Brilliant! We are still finalising the accounts but I’m very proud to announce that we raised over AED 120,000. Another special event was the Al Dobowi Greensomes that was hosted by our good friend Surender Kandhari. As always this popular event was a great success.

LADIES’ COMPETITION RESULTS

Ladies’ Monthly Medal 2019 In Silver A Division (handicaps 0-14), it was Monica Palao who picked up first prize with a great net score of 71 with Viv Caley finishing runner-up with a score of 72 net. In Silver B Division (handicaps 15-23), Martha Wong claimed the division medal with a net score of 72, beating the runner-up, Antonia Ludvigson, over a better back 9 count-back! Maribel Xammar was this month’s lucky prize raffle winner. All winners will now enjoy various lavish experiences courtesy of Palazzo Versace Dubai.

I need to send this off to Jacqui now as I still have to find my sari to play in the 2019 Diwali tournament that marks the end of a really great month. at Emirates Golf Club…and then we hit November. Kind regards, Yana Jamieson Lady Captain - 2019-2020

LADIES’ GROUP PROGRAMMES STARTING SOON

SPOTLIGHT ON…. Emanuele Galeppini

Register today for the one of our Ladies’ Group Programmes and learn to play golf in a friendly and relaxed environment.

Junior Links

Over a period of ten weeks, your group will be taken through various aspects of the game by your PGA Professional.

ACADEMY

Beginner: Complete beginners or ladies returning to the game, this level is structured to cover the fundamentals of golf. Intermediate: For the player who wishes to improve their technique and knowledge and playing around the Par 3 in less than 50 shots. Advanced: Designed for ladies who would like to further their game and improve their scores, both on the Par 3 and 18 hole course and dedicate time to improving their overall game, with individually focused lessons.

Hello, my name is Emanuele Galeppini, I’m 10 years old and I’m Italian, from Genoa, but I’ve been living in Dubai since I was a few months old.

Italian and he won The Open at Carnoustie. I was so lucky to be able to watch him. I always like to watch his best shots on the internet.

I started to play golf when I was four years old, when my family used to buy me plastic golf clubs to play so they could start to introduce me to golf when I was a baby. I remember the first golf bag, I received which was for Christmas when I was four years old and now my little brother is using it.

I now need to say thank you to my best supporters, my dad and mum, dad because he always helps me, teaches me when something is wrong with my swing and explains to me that golf is primarily a gentleman’s sport…no cheating, respect other people and even if you are not playing well on the day you have to behave; mum, because is always there for me, dropping me off, picking me up, organising and playing with me even from the beginning when I needed to learn to be on a golf course; she always tries to give us the maximum she can so thank you mum, you are the best in the world!!!

My dad had been playing golf since he was very young so I did the same and at the beginning I didn’t like this sport, but I’m very grateful, because he pushed me to play and now I love golf. My dad is the Dubai Creek Club champion 2018. I’ll be there one day soon! I got my handicap when I was eight years old and since that time, the progress has been very good. I was playing once or twice a week and now I have lessons three times a week, plus I play two rounds of golf at the week end; if I’m off from school I try to play every day. I find golf beautiful, especially because I’m spending a lot of time outside in the open air and it’s great when you go on holiday and play other courses. Since I was nine years old my parents have been sending me to a golf camp in Scotland, at St. Andrews for a couple of weeks in the summer where I have made lots of friends from around the world and I have played amazing courses, plus I play for a few days with

my dad as well before he drops me there and these are very special times with him. I can’t wait to go back next summer. This summer, I’m also going to be spending one month in Switzerland, Crans Montana, where I will try to play every day (and escape hiking)! Every tournament I am able to watch on television I do and I’m very confident that one day I’ll be there too! My favourite golfer obviously is Francesco Molinari because he is

Now, I just want to write few words about my best friend, my little brother, I can’t wait to take you around to the big course and spend lot of time together because now you are still enjoying the playgrounds and I’ll finally be able to drive the buggy! I would to thank Stephen Deane for giving me the opportunity to say some words about myself. Thank you so much for improving my game. Since Stephen started teaching me my game has just got better and better. I recently won a junior tournament at Yas links which I wouldn’t have won without Stephen.

Rules of Golf

GREENKEEPER’S CUTTINGS BY Matthew Perry -

1. In the following three scenarios, you no longer need to ask your playing partners to witness your actions when lifting your ball that is in play. • To check if the ball is damaged • Lifting your ball to identify it – during a search • Lifting your ball to see if it lies in a condition where relief would be allowed

Dear all, I would like to address a few items this month concerning the golf course and why we have had some issues on the greens surrounds and bunkers. I am going to explain what we have currently on the Majlis course so that you can fully understand.

However, you MUST still mark the position of the ball before lifting and you MUST have good reason to be lifting the ball – without good reason a one shot penalty will apply.

Greens The greens are what we call ‘push up greens which means that they were pushed up with native sand back in 1987 and grass was planted on top. The greens do not have any kind of drainage which has affected us over the years since we water the course with water that has some salt content and this salt can cause the grass to stress out and can die as a result. We relieve compaction and make sure we add silica sand to combat this but sometimes it does not always work. This is a huge reason why we need to re-turf when it does die off. The lack of drainage causes the water to move from the greens to the edges and thus cause us problems.

The bunkers also do not have drainage and this causes the sand to become compacted. The misconception that there is no sand in the bunker is wrong, because it is just very compacted as the water from the irrigation goes into the bunker and doesn’t go out through a drainage system.

How are we going to solve these issues? We are starting the planning to re design the greens in the future but a date has yet to be confirmed. This will help with the issues of dying turf around the greens and increase pin positions and spread wear. This project is an extensive one but one we feel is important so we can get the green complexes to the standards expected for Emirates Golf Club by using modern day technology and processes which simply were not available in 1987.

THE NEW RULES OF GOLF – More changes explained… by Cian Hurley

Following on from last month when we explained the 20 Must Know Rule changes for 2019, this month we will look to explain some of the lesser known rule changes introduced by the R&A and the USGA.

Golf Course Superintendent

Bunkers

19

Some tips from the R&A on pace of play How players can minimise round times: Be aware of your position with regard to the group in front and keep up with that group. If you feel that your group is losing ground, tell the other players in your group.

The main reason behind this change is to entrust the integrity of the player in line with all other aspects of the game and to speed up play. It was also agreed that more often than not, an opponent would decline the opportunity to actually observe the process, so why bother anyway…The penalty for lifting without good reason should be enough to prevent abuse of the rule.

If your group is behind, try to catch up.

2. Replacing Ball when Original Spot is not Known In a situation now where a ball is moved and must be replaced, it will ALWAYS be replaced (not dropped). Regardless if the original lie is known or unknown. If the spot is not known, it will be ESTIMATED and the ball will be replaced as it was before it was moved, including being under or against any growing or attached natural object.

Be ready to play your shot. While exercising due consideration for other players in your group, put your glove on, check your yardage, pick your club and line up your putt while others are playing.

3. Touching Line of Play on Putting Green In the new rules, there is no penalty if a player touches the line of putt. It was determined that no real advantage could be gained. Also, with the introduction of repairing spike marks and other damages, it makes sense to eliminate this entirely.

If you lose a clear hole and are delaying the group behind, or if there is no group in front of you and you are delaying the group behind, invite the group behind to play through.

At the green, speed up your exit by positioning your bags on the way to the next tee. Move off the green as soon as all players in your group have holed out and mark score cards at or on the way to the next tee. Play a provisional ball if your ball may be lost outside a hazard or out of bounds.

Here is a reminder of the top 10 must know changes: The bunkers will also have drainage put in during this time and a possible change of sand as well. Going forward we have changed our procedures on the bunkers and now put a tractor and tiller machine in the bunkers every week to help remove compaction. Extra effort during tournaments where we re rake the bunkers is now happening so we can present them to the best possible standard.

Tournament Touch Up I would like to just make you aware of something I introduced when I came back to Emirates Golf Club last year and that is Tournament Touch Up. On weekends and at any time we have a tournament we send a crew of colleagues back out onto the course to do several things. • We re-roll the greens to help present a smooth surface and increase speed.

1. New dropping height. All drops must be from knee height.

6. Ball or ball-marker moved on green. No penalty for accidental movement of ball or ball-marker on green.

2. New dropping procedure. Ball must land in and come to rest in relief area.

7. Ball accidentally moved while searching. Replace ball with no penalty.

3. Time reduced for search. Ball is lost if not found within three minutes.

8. Loose impediments in bunker or penalty area. Removal of loose impediments in bunker or penalty area now allowed.

4. Putting with flagstick in. Hitting unattended flagstick in hole now allowed when putting.

• The cups are checked and painted for the tournament.

5. Spike mark repair on green. Repair of almost any damage to green now allowed.

• Bunkers are re raked and bunker rakes re-set around the bunkers. • Tees are cleared of old tee pegs and tee markers are moved to a clean area. This is to present the course in a standard that is necessary for you and I hope that this helps your enjoyment on the course. Happy Golfing

9. Touching line of play on green. Touching line of play on green is now allowed. 10. READY GOLF In stroke play, the new Rules actively encourage ready golf. *N.B. We at Emirates Golf Club also support this new rule within our club competitions/tournaments and general play. If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply Email your query to churley@dubaigolf.com

PRO’S TIP OF THE MONTH

RECIPROCAL CLUBS

21

By Golf Professional MATTHEW STEVENSON

RECIPROCAL CLUBS

Performing a warm-up prior to play allows you to be at your best from the moment you step onto the first tee, which is critical in avoiding injury whilst participating in sport. Additionally, it can allow you to take part even when perhaps experiencing some niggling discomfort. A stiff lower back will only benefit from some sports specific movements and mobility drills, allowing you to play more freely. Some golfers like to have a good 20-30 minutes working through their bag and limbering up before setting out, and there are those of us who are usually rushing to the first tee trying to tuck our shirt in and get the other shoe on whilst on the hop. Regardless of which one you are, here are four simple and effective exercises that will get you ready for the round ahead...

Pro’s Tip

SPOTLIGHT ON….

ARABELLA GOLF COURSE Location: The golf course is situated near Kleinmond which is on the Western Cape’s Whale Coast, and close to Hermanus. The Estate is home to one of the top ranked golf courses in South Africa, with pristine grass, tricky sand traps and challenging water hazards. Designed by Peter Matkovich, he ensured that the 18 holes encompassed the Mountain backdrops, lagoon frontage and forests on the estate near Kleinmond. These provide for links, parkland and coastal aspects, while the individual fairways provide natural corridors as vantage points to savour nature’s true beauty. The golf course has been enjoyed by celebrities such as Samuel L. Jackson and professional golfers like Ernie Els and Gary Player. The fabled 18-hole, Par 72 Championship course has consistently been ranked in the top 10 courses in South Africa. The 8th hole has been described as one of the most beautiful par 5’s in South Africa and the 18th hole was rated one of the finest finishing holes in the country.

Body weight squats

Trunk and shoulder rotations

This is a great way to increase the heart rate and get the blood pumping to major muscle groups of the lower body. They also help to wake up the hips and have them switched on which will help when shifting weight and turning back into the ball. If you find them difficult you can use a club out in front for some support.

This is a variation of a favourite. Hold a club at each end but rotate your right arm internally so that your palm is facing upwards (left hand for the lefties) and turn to the top of your backswing a few times. You will feel a nice stretch at the shoulder and down into the side of your back and hips.

Wrist and arm rotations

Practice swings (feet together)

This is an excellent way to get the wrists and forearms engaged, hold two clubs together firmly in the middle of the shaft with your arm in front, and rotate fully in one direction to the next repeatedly.

If pushed for time and in a hurry this is a great way to find your rhythm and tempo before a round. It will feel strange and unnatural, however it encourages you to slow down a little and really rotate through the hips, trunk and shoulders

The Golf Club offers a fully stocked Pro Shop, warm up range, putting and chipping green, halfway house and golf club bar, as well as secure lockers rooms and showers, golf carts and golfing clinics and coaching by our Pro.

Anti-rotational exercises and why they are important for your golf swing So what is an anti-rotational exercise? Put simply, it is about keeping your body (your hips specifically) in a neutral position, stabilising the spine while being acted upon by rotational forces. Why is it useful? Well, contrary to popular belief among golfers, the ability to keep a rigid spine throughout your swing helps with force production when striking the ball. A loose or ‘disengaged’ spine over time, be it from a golf swing or ineffective ways of accomplishing everyday tasks, can lead to injury and/or poor joint position which can affect the motion of your swing. A great example of an anti-rotational exercise is this resistance band tap out. So how so you perform it? Start in a high plank (or push up) position with your feet shoulders width apart (The narrower your foot position, the more difficult the exercise) and very slowly tap the hand out to the side, palm flat on the ground, whilst maintaining a neutral (or flat) position with your pelvis throughout. To make this exercise more challenging you can try adjusting the position of your feet or using a higher resistance band. One caveat to this is that these exercises need only be performed if there is an obvious deficiency. Ask me at the Fit Lab if you’re unsure.

YOGA FOR GOLF

THE IMPORTANCE OF IMPROVING EMPLOYEE HEALTH & WELLBEING

Fit Lab

by Renee Knowles

CORPORATE WELLNESS AT UPANDRUNNING UPANDRUNNING helps clients, from small businesses to major corporations, improve their employees’ health and well-being. As a result, they are helping to develop a workforce which is motivated to make healthier and more sustainable choices for their well-being.

As a golf enthusiast, you already know that you can enhance your game spending a lot of time on the putting green and the driving range and you probably already have. A physiotherapist will tell you, “You are what you do most”, but did you know that you can improve your game even further by practising some simple yoga postures? Not only does it assist with mental and physical conditioning, but it also gives you the tools to generate more power, speed, consistency, balance and concentration which are all fundamental components in golf performance.

Six ways yoga improves your game: The cost of poor health and well-being can be significant to both individuals and organisations.

1. You will reduce the risk of ‘throwing out your back’. Your core muscles are required to stabilise your spine. The intrinsic one-sided repetitive motion of a golf swing requires good ‘rotational control’.

Changes to the way we work are contributing to inactive lifestyles, unhealthy living and workplaces that are increasingly sedentary. Compounded by a growing consumption of fast food and general life stresses, the result is a negative impact on our health and wellbeing. A balanced and healthy lifestyle is profoundly beneficial for your body and mind, and reduces the risk of chronic disease sweeping the world such as high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Staying active with adequate nutrition helps people maintain their strength, flexibility and endurance as they age. WHY IS CORPORATE WELLNESS IMPORTANT?

2. Yoga is about symmetry of movement and is

practised in both directions, meaning it can affect the ‘centering of your swing’. A stance that is offcentre can affect the under or over playing of your swing, and hence affect accuracy,

4. Flexibility allows you to channel rotation and power to hit that long drive.

5. You can do 18 holes and be up for more! Yoga uses breath as vital energy; not only does it calm your mind and improve concentration, but it also allows you to relax through the swing and ultimately conserve energy.

The role of preventative medicine is an important factor in achieving overall health and wellness of company employees, as well as increased productivity. By working with a fully integrated clinical team, like UPANDRUNNING, employees can achieve early diagnosis, followed by appropriate and individualised treatment.

3. It improves balance which grounds your feet

better to control those ‘one footed shots from the rough!’

flowing through postures which challenge several muscle groups to work better together and support your body weight can only do positive things!

Based in Fit Lab, we provide a thorough musculoskeletal assessment of strength, flexibility and balance. Whether through education, screening, physical training or various assessment programmes, corporate health programmes can achieve the following results: • A reduction of the impact of chronic disease and painful musculoskeletal conditions in employees. • Better management of stress related illnesses. • Earlier detection and treatment of many diseases and conditions. • Optimal management and control of those with existing chronic diseases or illnesses. • Improvement to the physical and mental performance of your team.

Our specialised and multidisciplinary team offers a range of health and wellbeing talks to help educate your employees on topics such as workstation ergonomics, posture and pain prevention, nutrition and human function, sleep, and more. First Aid Training Providing first aid courses teach lifesaving skills and give the confidence they need to act appropriately if and when an accident arises. Services include: Tailored Medical & Performance Checks Our individualised corporate medical checks are a valuable service and provide a snapshot of a person’s current health status. This service is beneficial in reducing employee insurance premiums and identifying common health issues in your work environment. Workstation Ergonomic Assessments Ergonomics forms a fundamental part of the UAR corporate wellness programme and is a technical term for a workstation assessment of your desk set up to optimise posture, health and to minimise the risk of pain and injury.

Research has shown that investing in corporate wellness can increase productivity, emotional resilience and the sense of value among employees, thus optimising your ‘best assets’, and creating a healthy and vibrant workplace culture.

WHAT’S COOKING FROM THE KITCHEN OF CHEF NICHOLAS CUOMO CHICKEN KALE WALDORF SALAD WITH AVOCADO & GOAT CHEESE

Ingredients

1 cup white whole wheat flour or whole wheat pastry flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon cardamom 1/4 teaspoon ginger pinch of cloves 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, plus more if necessary 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 tablespoon olive oil (or sub melted butter) 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3/4 cup mashed, cooked sweet potato (about 2 medium sweet potatoes)

Instructions

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and spices. In a medium bowl, combine almond milk, egg, oil, maple syrup, vanilla, and mashed sweet potato until smooth. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Batter will be thick, however if it is way too thick add in a tablespoon or two of milk. Lightly coat a large non-stick skillet or griddle with olive oil and heat over medium. After a minute or two, drop batter by 1/4 cup onto skillet. Cook until bubbles appear on top, about 2 minutes. Flip cakes and cook until golden brown on underside, 2 minutes. Wipe skillet clean and repeat with more oil and remaining batter. You may need to reduce heat to medium low on the pan to prevent burning. I usually do this after my first batch. Makes 8 pancakes, 2 pancakes each.

Spike Bar has had some sporting celebrities visiting over the past couple weeks, Francois Pienaar, 1995 Rugby World Cup winning Captain for South Africa, and Boris Becker, tennis legend and two time Wimbledon winner.

INTRODUCING OUR NEW INTERN, ARNAUD CHALMERS

Helen and Maya Srivastava recently went on a trip to Sri Lanka which was a trip that Maya had won at last year’s Pink Day Charity Tournament; the prize was three rounds of golf and three nights stay for two at Victoria Golf & Country Club near Kandy. The holiday company that arranged it all were absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond all expectations. They also caught up with past member of our Club, Linda Harris, who lives next to the course there.

Hello everyone, It was great to meet some of you at the Mixed Season Opener, but for those who couldn’t attend, here’s a short background about me. A face from the past…welcome back to former colleague at the Club Mohammed Al Shaibani, pictured with Boyd Edmonson

Check out Jones the Grocer for the best breakfast in town!

Congratulations to our members for raising approximately AED 120,000 for the Al Jalila Foundation to support breast cancer awareness. We had fantastic support, including a special mention on the Nasdaq sign in Times Square, New York.

I’m from Belgium, so I can also speak French and Dutch; for all those who miss speaking their native language, don’t hesitate to have a chat with me! Furthermore, I graduated from the University of Birmingham in Applied Golf Management Studies which I combined with the PGA. During my studies I had the opportunity to work at Quinta Do Lago and Gleneagles. I hope I will be able to make your time at the Club more enjoyable and if you have any queries be sure to let me know. Looking forward to meeting you all, Arnaud Cramers

It was indeed a great honour and privilege to hoist the UAE National Flag on the FLAG DAY on 3rd November at Emirates Golf Club, in the presence of our colleagues.

Big Day Out at Emirates Golf Club last month proved to be a hit, attracting very large numbers of people, including many families, for a day of golf, F&B, entertainment and many other activities. Well done to everyone involved on a very successful day.
