Season’s Greetings

1

3 Another busy month has just flown by at the Club and there seem to be so many events happening and certainly Club Life magazine comes around so very quickly (as all our contributors will tell you!) and with so much happening it increases in volume too!

The month of December is very busy as we head into the festive season. We have just recently had Diwali, Thanksgiving and National Day celebrations, and now Christmas. Isn’t it wonderful that we all embrace these occasions, regardless of our religion or nationality, which certainly makes living in Dubai so unique. There are going to be many festive events taking place in December at the Club so please check what’s going on

It’s the time of year too when we all have lot of family and friends visiting, mostly because they want to be with us, but also because it’s the best place in the world to be at this time of the year with this wonderful weather. The Majlis is a walking only course now until mid-February and it’s fantastic to be able to be out in perfect weather conditions and walk the course which is now in peak condition. Thank you Matthew and the Golf Course Maintenance crew who do such a great job! In January, we will be focusing on the Omega Dubai Desert Classic which, like everything else at the Club, gets bigger and better. This takes place 23rd-26th January when we will be welcoming many regular players of this event including many of our past Champions. It should be an exciting tournament which will be preceded by the Abu Dhabi championship so we will all be watching golf more than playing it next month. The Member/Colleague Scramble takes place on Wednesday 11th December; all our hard-working colleagues really look forward to this competition and it’s great to play a fun competition with them so if you are able to play, please support this event as it means so much to everyone. Best wishes to everyone for an enjoyable festive season. See you in the New Year!

I think our ladies’ section must have the biggest and best collection of fancy dress attire world-wide. Just looking at the last month or so, our ladies got dressed in pink for the Yas Links Charity Golf day followed by our own Pink Charity Golf Day (possibly the same outfits for some). That was followed by the Diwali Scramble when our ladies all got dressed up in traditional and colourful saris for the evening function - very impressive indeed! Two days later was the ladies’ Halloween competition and there were some amazing outfits - ghouls, witches, devils and the like. We still have the Christmas Scrambles to come when there will be more impressive outfits I’m sure. There will be be even more events to come in the New Year with Valentine’s Day, Easter etc. Well done to you all. Years ago, we would have made a token effort at Christmas and Easter... Christmas with perhaps some Christmassy earrings and some tinsel, not forgetting Margaret Bain’s reindeer that was always attached to the buggy and still is to this day for the Christmas events; at Easter we might have worn some Easter/spring colours with a minority of people making an effort with bonnets. How times have changed but well done to all the ladies!

and don’t forget to book early, especially for New Year’s Eve which has gone from strength to strength over the last few years and tickets sell out fast.

Top three favourite courses you have ever played: Apart from the Majlis course, my other favourites would be Loch Lomond, Centenary Course Gleneagles, Arabella Golf Club near Hermanus South Africa Funniest thing that has ever happened to you, not specifically in golf: I stumbled over a hedge whilst leaving Dubai Offshore Sailing Club after an enjoyable wedding celebration and I could only be identified by my high heeled shoes sticking out of the hedge..or so I was told! This could also come under the most embarrassing heading! Most embarrassing moment not specifically in golf: At a New Year’s Eve event in Le Classique I decided to do the actions to the song “I believe I can fly” on top of the table...unfortunately I fell off so it was not a pretty sight and I could hardly walk for week! Your most abiding golfing experience or memory: This was when our son Ross, a pro golfer, qualified to play in the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 2007 and finished as the top Scottish player in the field which was nerve-wracking to watch.

I cannot believe that it is December - time is certainly flying by. Our much awaited Diwali Scramble tournament was held on 1st November which proved to be a very popular event again with almost 120 players participating. The golf day was followed by an amazing function which was full of fun; many members came in colourful and traditional outfits to vie for the best dressed prize. Dear All, It seems that we are at the peak of the season and our ladies are all geared up to play and win! Last month our Monday events included Halloween (what fun to see so many ladies dressed up for it), Medal and the two rounds of the Heritage Trophy. My congratulations go to all the winners. The Medal was very well subscribed and took up all of the Faldo course including a double-up on a few holes!! Most of the ladies are now very eager to play the Medal as each of us is trying to accumulate some points to qualify to play in the famous Curtisy Cup (Rest of the World against Europe!) The Heritage Trophy (a two-day tournament) brought in some fantastic scores. Mihoko Takahashi won the Heritage Trophy with two great scores; Hala Suleiman, who only played the second round, scored 43 points and she only joined our ladies’ section at the end of November. Both Mihoko and Hala played last year in my beginners’ group so I am very happy for them! There were also great scores and handicap reductions for Viv Caley,

Caroline Sabbagh, Helen Srivastava and Jasamin Fichte. There were many members at the DP World Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates last month; my money was on Tommy Fleetwood but Jon Rahm was just that little bit better. We are so lucky to have these tournaments on our doorstep and to get the chance to be right next to some of the best players in the world. Now I am really looking forward to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in January. As I am writing this I have just heard he sad news of the unexpected death of Gary Rhodes. I’m sure many of you have dined at his restaurants and probably had the chance to meet him… he was certainly charismatic. The weather is now just perfect for golf, from an early morning walk on the Majlis to an evening round on the Faldo. Tom Luig (thank you) and I have been busy organising our ladies’ trip for next April. We looked at the pros and cons of Germany, Spain, Bulgaria and we finally settled on Turkey. 36 of us are going - Cian and 35 ladies! Cian should get instructions from Rhys who has done it brilliantly in the past. Hopefully, it will be a fun trip. It’s now official that we raised AED 128,000 for the Pink Ball Charity.

LADIES’ Halloween TOURNAMENT Monday 4th November 2019 The annual Ladies’ Halloween Tournament took place on Monday 4th October on the Faldo Course. On this scary day of great fun, it was Ingrid Lind and Cathy Lajotte who won with an outstanding score of 70 points. The runners-up who finished two points behind the winners (68) were Shiba Khan and Glory Xavier. The individual winner was Viv Caley with 36 points and a better back 9 than Wendy Robinson who was runner-up. Our special “Breast Booby Prize” went to Annette Little, Maria Toriello, Liz Berry and Anita Jopp. The special nearest to the pins were won by Rekha Bandopadhyay on hole 2, Anne Bouigue on hole 9, Christiane Sprunck on hole 16 and Sue Hopwood on hole 17. While all ladies made a great effort to dress up, the best dressed team with the most creative costumes went to Amarjeet Radia and Jayshree Gupta, the ‘Cereal’ Killers of the day. My personal thanks again to all the sponsors and members for this brilliant support for a very worthy cause. Golf is certainly where you can meet interesting people. Peter and I were about to tee off for our evening ‘friendly’ 9 holes on the Faldo when we were joined by Magic Mike from California. He was certainly in good form as he blasted his drive about 200 yards past me. When I eventually caught up with him he introduced himself as Dr Michael Wasilisin, the founder of the extremely popular online MoveU exercise programmes. Mike was in Dubai to run a series of workshops as part of the MEFIT CLINICS. He kindly invited us to a couple of workshops on body alignment which were excellent, practical, fun and very well attended by lots of beautiful bodies. I will ask Mike if he could give a special golfers’ workshop when he is next in Dubai, Check out his website http://www. moveU.com … he is a really nice guy and the programme is very helpful! So to all our members as well as management and colleagues, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a special New Year…and of course, how could we forget that there is the UK election and Trump’s impeachment to add to the season’s entertainment. My name is Carlotta Scialanga and I am twelve years old. I was born in Lugano - the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. Golf is my passion; I started playing with my father and my brother when I was seven years old. When I was little I liked playing golf, mainly because I spent time with them, but now I am crazy about the sport. My passion grew when I began to take part in tournaments and I started to win. 14th NOVEMBER 2019

Emirates Golf Club hosted the 5th Peter Cowen Junior Tour by OMA Emirates event of the season on the Faldo course and, with the largest field of the season to date, 38 juniors in total, a superb afternoon was in store. It was Jay Chinchankar who claimed victory courtesy of a superb score of 33 (-3). Despite starting with a bogey on the first hole, Jay followed this up with an eagle, two birdies and 5 pars to secure the win. Hugo Garcia’s solid front nine of two birdies and a solitary bogey was enough to win the gross category with a score of 35.

I dedicate a lot of my time to golf, playing four days a week and taking part in tournaments at the weekends. My friends tell me that golf is really easy because you just have to hit the ball but I always explain to them that it is not as easy as they think. Golf is a mixture of technique and concentration. I really enjoy long shots with drives and this is when I play my best. Now I am living in Dubai with my family and we are members at Emirates Golf Club where I am in the Peter Cowen Golf Academy. I like my coach Stephen Deane and hopefully I will manage to improve my short game and putting. I have had a good start to the season in Dubai and I hope to keep up the good results for the rest of the season.

I am Edoardo Scialanga and I will be 16 years old in December; I was born in Switzerland and I have Swiss-Italian origins. I am very passionate about golf, having started playing at the age of six with my dad. I remember that he used to sneak me onto the course secretly because I was only allowed on the driving range. Today golf is my great love and, as I often say, golf is my life. My path in golf has been wide-ranging I have been in the Swiss Elite team since I was 12 and I have participated in several tournaments which has led me to reach a handicap of 3.6 My favourite player is Jordan Spieth because his style and his way of playing have taught me a lot. I spend many hours playing golf and every time I play my goal is to improve and enhance my techniques in order to hit the ball better. In addition to being my passion, golf has led me to build great relationships with my teammates too, sharing many enjoyable moments during training and competitions. Now I have moved with my family to Dubai, we are members of Emirates Golf Club and I am a part of the Peter Cowen Golf Academy along with my sister Carolotta. My coach is Stephen Deane and I am positive that I will improve my technique with him; the best part of my game is the long game at the moment. I started the season here in Dubai with good results and I hope to keep up the good work!

My special half an hour

with His highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum Saturday 16th November 2019 was indeed a very special day for me - it was my day off but yet I was duty bound and I decided to get some work done. At around midday I got a call from Sandy Tinari at Sales & Marketing to tell me that HH Sheikh Hamdan would be coming to our Club that day to dine at Carine. Immediately, I sprung into action and met the Royal Protocol Officers, who came well in advance, to ensure that everything was in order for the visit of His Royal Highness. I spoke to the Royal Protocol Officers regarding the lunch and arrangements and I was told that HH was coming over for a private lunch and so no photography would be allowed. However, they told me that they would let me know if HH change this mind. HH Sheikh Hamdan arrived at the Club with his small entourage at 1.00pm and, instead of going straight to Carine using the outside entrance, HH stepped into the Club reception which is when the golden, overwhelming moment of my life unfurled. For me, this was a moment of great honour when HH Sheikh Hamadan turned towards me and asked me to show him around the Club; I was, of course, very proud to be able to do this and I took him to Jones the Grocer and the reservations area. After looking around, HH very politely asked me whether I

could get him a golf cart; in any case, I had earlier arranged for a six-seater golf cart to be kept ready in the reception area soon after Sandy’s call, thinking that it might be needed. As we were walking towards the cart, HH asked me if he could drive it. I told him that it was all his and as he jumped in, he asked me to get in also. He said, “Let’s go around the golf course”. I must say, I couldn’t hide the big smile that lit up my face. HH drove the cart around the putting green area, went down the 17th hole then the 18th and back to the Club. While coming back HH took a photo of the clubhouse with the Dubai Marina in the background. On our way back, HH turned the cart into the exit area of the reception road and that’s when he saw the ‘no entry’ sign so he immediately reversed and said that we should never break the rules. A good lesson for us all! We headed back to the reception area and when we were walking in, the Royal Protocol Officer asked me whether I ever got to take a photo with HH. I replied that I take a lot of photographs but that I had never had the opportunity to take one with His Highness. HH asked me to stand with him to take a photo. I couldn’t believe my ears or eyes. There I was, standing next to the most charismatic, powerful, humble and inspiring leader of the future, the Crown Prince of Dubai, HH Sheikh Hamdan. This was my most memorable, blessed, golden moment indeed. “When a person really desires something, all the universe conspires to help that person to realise his dream”. Paulo Coelho

RECIPROCAL CLUBS LAGUNA NATIONAL SINGAPORE Laguna National is one of Singapore’s premier golf and country clubs which boasts two 18-hole championship courses that have won prestigious accolades and hosted international championships, including the European Tour’s Singapore Masters, the Korean LPGA’s ADT Caps Tour Championship and European and Asian Tour co-sanctioned event, The Championship at Laguna National. Following a multi-million-dollar facelift, Laguna National has developed a state-of-the-art union of a world-class golf club and a 198-room and suites Dusit Thai-branded hotel with full facilities including a spa, a learning and practice facility, a fitness centre, as well as memberexclusive areas with private locker rooms, members’ lounges and country club facilities. In close proximity to the airport, beach, malls and with a private clubhouse and hotel, golfers will find the world at their fingertips at Laguna National Golf & Country Club. The Classic Course layout, affectionately known locally as “The Beast” due to its formidable challenge, unfolds over dramatic, hilly terrain that is unique to any course in Singapore. The Classic Course has many colourful flourishes. An island green on #17 draws inspiration from TPC Sawgrass and is the site of many dramatic finishes over the final holes. Back to back 600+ yard holes at #13 and #14 demand long and accurate shot making. First crafted in 1993, it underwent a full redesign in 2010 establishing its dramatic reputation. Most recently in 2017, a full reconfiguration and renovation was undertaken to renew authenticity, soften angles, shape faster greens, enhance playability and modernise fairway and tee grasses. The addition of two new holes and a rerouting of the renovated holes has given it a challenging yet enjoyable feel. Drive-able par 4’s, lengthy par 5’s and devilish par 3’s characterises the refreshed layout.

BY Matthew Perry - Golf Course Superintendent

Dear Members, I hope you have all enjoyed the pleasant change in the weather and that you have capitalised on this by getting out to play more on the Majlis and Faldo Courses, both of which are in great shape!

Well what a month November was; the courses got a huge amount of water at the start of the month with heavy rainfall, which helped us save a lot of water in the process. The pictures show what it was like and was showing evidence of what I said last month with the greens having no drainage. This also helps with flushing of salts in the greens and it gets the grass growing a lot better.

The Faldo course will be overseeded on the 15th December this year. This will be the tees and the rough areas and again this helps us present the course to the best possible standard.

For Foursomes Matchplay, they state that 50% of the difference between the combined handicaps of the two opposing pairs will be awarded to the pair with the higher combined handicap.

We do hope you have enjoyed the course over the last month as the greens have started to become quicker due to slow growth, which will continue now through to March.

The most important points to note here are as follows:

This decision, further to our communication on the same topic throughout last season, was discussed at the Members’ Consultative Committee (MCC) level and it was eventually brought in to begin the 2019/2020 season Club Matchplay Championships. This is the new handicap system for all Emirates Golf Club Matchplay Championships moving forward.

Should you have any further questions or wish to discuss any of the above points further, please be sure to catch me around the Club on your next visit!

A DAY OF RAIN AT THE CLUB

Recently we updated the Faldo course local rules. You will see this on the back of the Faldo scorecards.

From everyone at the Golf Course Maintenance Department we wish you a Happy Festive Period and see you in the New Year.

JANUARY 2020

Relief granted

The USGA states that for Singles Matchplay and Doubles (Fourball) Matchplay, each player will receive the full handicap difference, from the lowest handicap golfer in each circumstance.

Once the course is overseeded, the team will concentrate on tidying trees throughout the property and all perimeter areas are cleaned. This is very important to make sure it is presented in the best possible way during a very busy time for the Club.

Monday 9th

Also, please bear in mind that if the player feels that their ball might strike a floodlight, this also does not allow them to take free relief.

stance or swing, that the player may take relief. This would be ‘nearest point plus one club length’ relief and a free drop. If the pole in question is interfering with the player’s line of shot, or line of sight, then this does not allow for free relief to be taken.

Please allow me to address a couple of recent changes here at Emirates Golf Club:

We are now very much looking forward to overseeding the golf course after the National Holidays and the seed arrived recently so we are busy calibrating the equipment to be ready to apply seed. We are doing the same as last year with the tees, approaches and rough being over seeded. The fairways will not be done again this year, so we have firm fast fairways like last year and the contrast is amazing during the winter months.

2. Faldo Course – Floodlight Rule

- The player will not be penalised at all if this happens. - The ball that struck the floodlight itself does not have to be found. - There is no choice offered as to whether or not the stroke can be replayed or if the player can take the ball as it rests after striking the floodlight. The stroke must be replayed under all circumstances. - With regard to taking relief from the floodlight poles, it is only when the pole in question impedes your

PRO’S TIP OF THE MONTH DON’T PRACTICE ‘TRAIN TO LEARN’ by Professional Richard Dunsby

Three things a golfer should add into their training: Spacing, Variability & Challenge

SPACING By incorporating the spacing effect to your training, you are effectively increasing the time you take between each rep. This creates cognitive stress as your brain – or more specifically, your working memory – is challenged to recall previous successful reps (more so than if there is little or no time between shots). So, rather than simply machinegunning balls down the range, you are actively teaching your brain to induce a deeper degree of learning.

VARIABILITY

Drill No.3

Take your 7 Iron and hit a shot with your right arm only.

Adopt an athletic set up position, Let your arms hang down from the shoulder joint into a natural relaxed position and place your hands together.

Right (Trail) Arm Only The purpose of this is again to gain awareness of the mass of the club and how it wants to move around your body naturally.

Train To Learn Drills

You should be able to feel signs of unwanted tension, if you’re struggling to make solid contact.

Incorporate these three drills into your range training routine.

Trail Side Wrist Hinge & Arm Fold

Once your hands are placed together, allow your trail wrist to hinge back so it creates an angle at around 45 degrees (right handed golfer right wrist). Allow the trail arm to fold so that the palm of the hand faces the sky, setting the position for the top of the backswing. Apply some pressure from the right shoulder so the palm of the right hand meets the left hand. Synchronising the downswing is so important for a consistent impact position.

Drill No.1

Through The Ball Move Take your 7 Iron and hold it horizontally to the ground, allowing it to simply hang at your knees. Holding the club head in the lead hand, rotate to the top of the backswing keeping your hands in the same position. Then, as you begin the downswing rotation, imagine you’re trying to pull the head of the club off (an action which allows your lower body to move left and upper body to rotate).

Some significant neurobiological research from Stanford University has provided a bit of bad news for the way most people practise golf – namely, the evidence that suggests our brains need variety if we are going to learn. In other, more golfing terms, learning through repetition is, in most scenarios, ineffective. Instead, constantly changing the nature and application of tasks is vital for successfully learning and mastering any new movement – such as a golf swing – as this conscious variance is far better when it comes to engaging memory recall and creating cognitive stress.

CHALLENGE Increasing the spacing and variability in your practice will, in turn, increase the challenge point it presents. So, the more space and variability your training contains, the higher the challenge point – and the more purposeful and rewarding that practice session has become. Setting outcome goals is another way to elevate your own challenge point, with more complex and testing self-targeting representing a higher challenge point.

Myth... Repetition leads to better swings and better scores If this news has unsettled you (we know plenty of golfers and coaches who would sooner burn their bag than listen to this sort of heresy) let’s think about it in another way. Imagine being in school and the teacher ask you the following sequence of questions, 5+5=? and 5+5=? and 5+5=? and 5+5=? and 5+5=? and 5+5=? Even as a child you would suspect this type of math test is not making you a great deal brighter. We’ve already touched on the limitations of mere repetition – namely the absence of spacing, variability, challenge and, of course, cognitive stress. Simply put, it’s too easy, yet this is precisely what many golfers are habitually, even ritually, doing as ‘practice’.

Do one rep of this drill and then hit 1 ball trying to feel the same movement. Repeat 5 times before changing drill. Do one rep of this drill and then hit one ball trying to feel the same movement. Repeat five times before changing the drill.

Do one rep of this drill and then hit one ball trying to feel the same movement. Repeat five times before changing drill. To view these drills in action and get some additional ideas on how to add spacing, variability, and challenge to your “training to learn” practice Visit the Peter Cowen Academy here at Emirates Golf Club to book your lesson with Richard today.

WHAT’S COOKING? FROM THE KITCHEN OF CHEF NICHOLAS CUOMO F&B Update

MULLED WINE WINTER PUDDINGS Method • 45 Minutes Infusing + chilling overnight • Makes 6 • Easy Mini winter puddings with mulled wine - perfect for feeding your hungry guests over Christmas. Ingredients • frozen black forest fruits 600g, defrosted • caster sugar 75g • lemon ½, juiced • red wine 200ml (something fruity like shiraz or malbec) • star anise 1 • cinnamon stick 1 • cloves 2 • orange peel 2 strips • white bread 10 slices

To book your table, visit dubaigolf.com/jonesxmas or call 04 417 9999

• crème fraîche to serve, (optional)

STEP 1 Put the fruit, sugar and lemon juice into a pan and cook over a medium heat for 5 minutes or until the fruit has released a lot of juice but has only just started to break down. Pour the mixture into a fine sieve set over a bowl and put aside for 20 minutes or until all the juice has drained from the fruit. STEP 2 Put the fruit syrup into a small pan with the wine, spices and orange peel. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes before covering and putting aside for an hour to infuse the flavours into the syrup. STEP 3 Line 6 small pudding moulds with cling film, leaving enough overhanging to cover the puddings later. Use a 5cm round biscuit cutter to cut 6 discs from 2 pieces of bread, to fit the bases of the moulds. Using the remaining bread, cut out 6 x 7cm discs for the lids and then as many rectangles, roughly 4cm x 5cm wide, as you can. Dip the smaller circles in the syrup then put into the bases of the moulds. Repeat with the rectangular pieces, fitting them around the sides of the moulds and making sure they overlap a little so they stick together. Fill each mould with fruit right to the brim and top up with a tbsp or so of the syrup. Finally, soak the larger discs of bread in the syrup and put on top of the puddings, then cover with the overhanging cling film. Chill any remaining syrup. STEP 4 Put the finished puddings onto a baking tray in the fridge and set a second tray on top with something heavy to secure it in place. This weighting will help seal the puddings and make sure they come out in one piece when served. Leave the puddings in the fridge for 6-8 hours or overnight before serving.

STEP 5 When ready to serve, unwrap the moulds and turn the puddings out onto plates. Top with any left-over syrup and a dollop of crème fraîche, if you like.

We are a very anterior-dominant society since we sit for so much of our day. All that forward hunching will lead to poor posture and is likely to cause pain further on down the line in some part of your body. The reverse fly trains the back part of your body, which will help you maintain better posture. When you strengthen the posterior muscles, as shown in this exercise, it will not only help you look better and shape your body, but it will also save your back problems down the road. Doing sets of the reverse fly will target your posterior delts (rear shoulders) as well as your rhomboids, trapezius, and latissimus dorsi (back) muscles. Not only will these exercises help balance out the forward nature of your daily tasks, but they’ll help counter-balance a lot of other anterior-focused workout moves. For example, shoulder presses, push-ups, and bench presses all work the front of your body. Doing a reverse fly along with all these other exercises helps keep everything in balance. To scale down, or if the standing version of the exercise hurts your lower back, try lying prone (facedown) on a bench or exercise ball which also engages the muscles better. You can also try the reverse fly with dumbbells, a resistance band or a cable machine. Keep in mind that this exercise is all about targeting the correct muscles, versus powering through it. Start with small weights and get the movement right before you worry about progressing to more weight.

b. Keeping core engaged and maintaining a slight bend in the elbows, exhale and lift dumbbells up laterally in a wide arching motion until they reach shoulder height. Focus on squeezing shoulder blades together. c. Pause at the top, then inhale and slowly lower dumbbells to return to starting position.

Reverse Fly Form Tips Don’t swing or use momentum to get the weights up. Instead, move in a slow and controlled motion on the way up and down. Keep back straight (neutral) during the entire movement. Rounding the back will place too much stress on your lumbar spine (lower back).

While you can improve the situation using a standing desk dubaigolf.com or by taking walking breaks, there’s not much you can do about the fact that you are likely to need your fingers on a keyboard (and/or smartphone) for many hours of the day. What you can do though, is incorporate preventative exercises into your routine to combat all that “desk body” and that’s where the reverse fly comes in.

Low back pain is the most common injury suffered by golfers at both amateur and professional levels of the game. The research shows that as many as 33-55% of golfers will experience a lower back issue at some point in their golfing careers. As well as the pain and functional limitations, low back injuries also lead to significant time lost from golf play and practice. There are a few physical factors that have been identified, which can increase the risk of low back injuries. By improving in these areas you will stand a better chance of getting through your practice sessions and rounds unscathed. (1) Posterior chain flexibility: Flexibility has been shown time and time again to correlate with performance and injury rates in golfers. The muscles and connective tissues at the back of the legs, buttocks and back need to be flexible to allow us to achieve the correct set up posture and to allow adequate range of motion during the different stages of the swing. Poor setup and poor swing mechanics not only hinder performance, they can result in overuse of the structures in the lower back. Improving your flexibility: Lying on your back, wrap a belt around your foot on the target leg. Hold onto one end of the band in each hand and slowly pull your foot towards you until you feel a stretch in your hamstring (back of thigh region). Do not be over aggressive with the stretch and release it if you feel any pain, pins and needles or numbness in the leg. Hold for 20 seconds, repeat three times on each leg in the morning and evening.

(2) Hip internal rotation: An efficient golf swing requires us to rotate internally around the trail hip on the backswing, transfer our weight and then internally rotate at high velocity around the lead hip on the down swing and follow through. A reduction in hip rotation can cause a number of swing faults such as a reverse spine angle and can lead to increased loading of the lower back. PGA Tour Professionals have an average of around 45 degrees of hip internal rotation whereas, us mere mortals are aiming for around 30 degrees.

(3) Thoracic (upper back) rotation: The upper back is a key area that helps you create rotational power/torque during the swing. This is especially true for the modern golf swing, which looks to create as much separation between the torso and hips as possible (the X factor). Poor thoracic spine mobility into rotation can limit the range of motion and power available to you and often leads to golfers trying to compensate in other areas including the lower back. A good range of pure thoracic rotation is around 30-35 degrees in each direction.

Improving you hip internal rotation: Lying on your back with the legs bent, pop your left foot across and rest it just above the right knee. Using your right hand, slowly pull the left thigh towards the right, which will stretch the hip into internal rotation. Ease off if you feel pain in the hip, groin or lower back area. Hold for 20 seconds, repeat three times on each side in the morning and evening. Improving your thoracic rotation: Lie on your side with both arms straight out in front, knees slightly bent and the head supported. Cross the top knee over so it is contact with the floor. Take a deep breath in and when exhaling take the top arm across the body as you rotate your trunk as far as you can comfortably. Keep your gaze on the moving hand so that your neck rotates too. On breathing in, rotate back to the starting position. Repeat 10 times each side, morning and evening.
