Now that the Majlis is a walking only course, take advantage of the pleasure of having a caddie with you for your rounds of golf. The caddies all undergo training and they’re very enthusiastic. If you need to book one please contact Ummer or Jega. Some important dates in December are the colleague/member golf day on Tuesday 12th December…please make an effort to participate in this event if you can; our colleagues enjoy this day so much and they love being part of a team with members. The Mixed Christmas Scramble, dinner and raffle will all take place on Saturday 16th December and all proceeds from this go to the Junior Colleagues Fund. If you are able to donate prizes, please do so through membership services and/or buy raffle tickets leading up to the event. It’s sure to be a very enjoyable day of golf followed by a sumptuous dinner on the terrace afterwards. With just less than three weeks to Christmas, the festive activities are about to get started at Emirates Golf Club so don’t forget to check out the dates for the Christmas competitions and functions. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Dear Members and Friends,

N

ovember has come to an end and time is flying; things are moving very fast at Emirates Golf Club and, as well, the festive season approaching.

At the clubhouse we now have two new beautiful refurbished restaurants to enjoy. Jones the Grocer on the ground floor is getting really busy and is sometimes overbooked which is great. I believe we are getting a lot of guests from outside but it has been well received from members as well. At the end of November our new Spike Bar on the first floor, where we always wanted to be, just opened, with a members’ lounge inside and a members’ area outside. I hope you like it! I am hearing only good initial comments from members. It is also up to us, the members to put some atmosphere into it. Please come for prize presentations and stay a bit longer after your game. From the beginning of November the Majlis Course has been walking only; it’s getting a bit tough for some; but it’s also great for some additional exercise but caddies are available. The course is good shape,

ready for 12th Omega Dubai Ladies Classic. Please come and see the Lady Professionals in action. I would like to congratulate all the winners of November tournaments; the OMA Monthly Medal - Jignesh Sangani, Ladies Medal - Amarjeet Radia, Junior Open Boys – Arjun Gupta, Junior Open Girls – Hyeonji Kang, Clubhouse Trophy - Gaurav Verma, (our Vice-Captain came close, runner-up - he is in form), Prime Legacy Pro Am – Kylie Henry (Pro), Lynne Dickinson, Martha Wong and Naima Maya. We are looking forward to the December tournaments - please make sure you sign up. We have a Christmas Scramble on 16th December, followed by a raffle, and proceeds will go to our Junior Colleagues at the Club which is a good way to acknowledge their service. Some colleagues we don’t often see, but they are there behind the scenes so please buy tickets. At the end of this, my December letter, I wish everyone a wonderful festive season and a Happy New Year 2018. Good health and a lot of good golf in 2018! Ivan Fornazaric Club Captain 2017-2018

inally the cooler weather is upon us. We are starting to enjoy our rounds and being able to walk the Majlis without complaining about the heat and the humidity! After the Majlis reseeding, which saw us play on sand and long grass with very slow greens, we are now starting to feel the great change in the condition of the course and it has become a joy to play it.

I am very proud to announce that we have won our second Inter-Club match which was played on the Faldo Course. We are now sharing the lead in our pool with Abu Dhabi City Golf Club. Well done to team who played exceptionally well on the day!

It has been busy at the Club with two of our venues now fully refurbished and opened. Our long awaited members’ lounge and terrace are both finally here to be enjoyed by all. This was apparent when the first tournament, the Clubhouse Trophy, was played just after the opening and, most of the members who played, stayed back for the presentation to enjoy the lovely buffet that was prepared by the F&B team displaying some of the dishes from their new menu! Some of our ladies were treated to a first-hand experience in the new Spike Bar, which started with a complimentary lunch that showcased some of the dishes from the new Indian menu, followed by a live cooking class with London-based Indian Chef Hari Ghotra! All those who participated were taught how to prepare vegetable samosas from scratch! For the ladies who missed the lesson, you can go on Hari’s website where you can find all of her recipes with a step-by-step YouTube version.

raffle will take place after the Christmas Scramble competition, which will be held on December 16th. Our traditional ladies’ Christmas lunch will be held on December 10th with a Christmas market on display. Please note that the participants on the day will donate 10% of their sales to our Junior Colleagues Fund It is a great day with delicious food, some quizzes organised and food hampers to be won! Members’ guests are welcome to join! The Legacy Prime Pro-Am was a huge success once again with some of the Ladies European Tour Professionals playing since they were here to prepare for the Omega Dubai Ladies Classic! Congratulations to the team Martha Wong, Naima Maya and Lynne Dickinson with their Professional, Kylie Henry, who came first on the day with an amazing score of 19 under.

Our Heritage Trophy was played over two rounds last month, one being on the Faldo and one on the Majlis! Congratulations to Sue Hopwood who was the overall winner! We have started selling our Christmas raffle tickets; please support us in buying some, as all the proceeds will go to our Junior Colleagues Fund. The

The Omega Dubai Ladies Classic is now being played. This is a great occasion to follow and watch some of the best female players on the European Tour as well as to exhibit our Club and our favourite sport to family and friends! Round two followed with some very good scoring on the day.. With three overall prizes up for grabs, it was Jenny Ayres who finished in third position with a combined 71 points over the two days. In the battle for the top prize, it came down to a better final round score, with Josie Tracey taking second place with a points total of 75 after two very

Currently I am taking lessons once a week with Dong Lee at Emirates Golf Club who always gives me confidence. I practise for about three to four hours a day and I play a few times a week. My future goal is to become a Professional golfer like Sung-Hyun Park. I am looking forward to seeing how I will change and improve to become a golfer at that level. Aside from playing golf, I spend time drawing or listening to K-POP music which is my only way to relieve stress as I wish I could enjoy playing golf and studying without any stress. The thing is not to go too fast but to reach the destination I want to achieve. Please watch me grow up.

Pro’s Tip of the Month by Senior Golf Professional Alastair Brown Dear Members, It’s been an exciting month at the Academy which is now fully under the Peter Cowen umbrella. This means we will have much more hands on input from Peter in our tuition packages and lesson structure, meaning a higher standard of Tour knowledge and coaching for you to help improve your own game.

For more information on the article please contact Senior Teaching Professional Alastair Brown at the Peter Cowen Academy.

Here are some basic positions for your reference.

The Set-Up

Top of the Backswing

Balanced posture with feet, knees, hips and shoulders all parallel to club-face. The arms are hanging under the shoulder line.

Shoulders have fully loaded in the coil, left arm has remained strong and straight with wrists cocked and club under control.

Before Impact Shoulders have rotated back down and are pushing the arms and shaft into strong delivery position. This pressure can be held through impact and all the way to the finish of the swing.

Finish Position Right shoulder has rotated to the target, arms are to the left of the body and club shaft across the back of the head. The body feels balanced and coiled in the finish.

Rake it, by Rhys!!!

hys

O

ver the first few months of the season there has been plenty of feedback suggesting that golf course etiquette has not been up to the standard expected here at Emirates Golf Club. This is a topic which is heavily discussed worldwide, and not just here at our Club, as well as topics such as pace of play, raking bunkers, repairing pitch marks and player safety to name a few.

rulEs by r

BY RHYS

This month we will focus on raking bunkers. Many will be quick to blame visiting golfers but there are also times when this feedback has arisen on weekends on the Majlis course which is played by members and members’ guests. In the golfing world, not raking bunkers is considered a rude act, disrespectful to fellow members and a behaviour that we wish to remove from our fantastic Club. The saying goes that “golfers should leave the golf course in the condition that they wish to find it.” No golfer has ever hit a ball towards a sand trap and hoped it was in a footprint. Every golfer expects to find the ball lying nicely, with the exception of a plugged ball or other causes that we can associate with any hazard, such as loose impediments affecting the lie of the ball. Our Club Captain, Ivan Fornazaric often speaks about golf course etiquette so please support him and Emirates Golf Club in our attempt to improve the current situation. In order to assist you with this, we aim to provide a sufficient number of rakes to make the task as effortless as possible, particularly given the size of some our bunkers. Moving on to the tools for the job - the rake. Much has been discussed about the positions of bunker rakes. Here is the opinion of the R&A on whether rakes should be positioned inside or outside bunkers.

There is not a perfect answer for the position of rakes, but on balance it is felt there is less likelihood of an advantage or disadvantage to the player if rakes are placed outside bunkers. It may be argued that there is more likelihood of a ball being deflected into or kept out of a bunker if the rake is placed outside the bunker. It could also be argued that if the rake is in the bunker it is most unlikely that the ball will be deflected out of the bunker. However, in practice, players who leave rakes in bunkers frequently leave them at the side which tends to stop a ball rolling into the flat part of the bunker, resulting in a much more difficult shot than would otherwise have been the case. This is most prevalent at a course where the bunkers are small. When the ball comes to rest on or against a rake in the bunker and the player must proceed under Rule 24-1, it may not be possible to replace the ball on the same spot or find a spot in the bunker which is not nearer the hole. If rakes are left in the middle of the bunker the only way to position them is to throw them into the bunker and this

causes damage to the surface. Also, if a rake is in the middle of a large bunker it is either not used or the player is obliged to rake a large area of the bunker resulting in unnecessary delay. Therefore, after considering all these aspects, it is recommended that rakes should be left outside bunkers in areas where they are least likely to affect the movement of the ball. In summary to all of the above there are two key points: 1. Rakes to be positioned outside bunkers in areas where they are accessible and least likely to affect movement of the ball. They should be facing in the direction of play is key as the narrower target of the pole is less likely to cause interference. 2. Please use them to “leave the golf course in the condition that you wish to find it” From myself, the Marshals and all of the Golf Management team we thank you in advance for your co-operation. If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply Email your query to rjames@dubaigolf.com

Dubai Delight

leven UAE golf and club industry professionals recently received their Club Management Diplomas. The Diploma is awarded across Europe and the Middle East by the Club Managers Association of Europe (CMAE) as a key qualification in its Management Development Programme’s (MDP) education pathway. The eleven successful recipients were Abdulla Al Noon of Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, Jonathan Craddock, Stephen Deane, Craig Haldane, Rhys James and Bryan Smyth all of Emirates Golf Club, Phillip Dobson from The Track Meydan, Martin Duff from Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club, Ed Edwards from Abu Dhabi National & Saadiyat Beach Golf Clubs, Chris Ng’ang’a from Body & Soul Health Club and Howie Roberts from Yas Links. All eleven attended MDP Parts 1 and 2 over a two year period, and attained their Diplomas by passing the end of programme exam, successfully fulfilling the requirements of an executive case study (that takes place during the week of MDP2) and submitting and passing a work based assignment on a

problem at their club that they resolved by applying the key learnings from the MDP curriculum. Stephen Deane, Marcus Casey, Nic Davies, Abdulla Al Noon, Chris May, Fiona Smith, Jonathan Craddock Bottom left to right: Phil Dobson, Ed Edwards, Chris Ng’ang’a . W, Craig Haldane, Bryan Smyth, Rhys James Launched in 2011 the highly regarded MDP Pathway has already been promoted and delivered in Scotland, England, Ireland, France, Spain, Italy and United Arab Emirates. Each course delivers top class education to club managers and club industry professionals on the ten core competencies of modern club management. Christopher May CCM, Chief Executive of Dubai Golf who organized the programmes in conjunction with CMAE said of their success “it gives me pleasure to hand out the Diploma certificates to industry peers. I have seen them work incredibly hard during their time at MDP, and then apply that knowledge in their clubs. They are putting their knowledge and experience to great use in the UAE and are growing the quality and professionalism of the clubs here.”

Commenting on his success Craig Haldane the Golf Course Superintendent at Emirates Golf Club said “As a Course Superintendent I am ultimately responsible for the product, however our roles today have become a lot more inclusive in all aspects of running a club. I highly recommend this qualification to give a rounded perspective of the nuances of club management at all levels and the additional value in networking that this brings beyond the classroom, is invaluable”. Ed Edwards, General Manager at Abu Dhabi National and Saadiyat Beach Golf Clubs added “Having the opportunity to complete MDP1 and MDP2 in the UAE and subsequently achieving the Club Managers Association of Europe Diploma has been beneficial from a professional growth standpoint and has allowed me to expand my peer network in the region and beyond. Furthermore, the CMAE structured educational program not only enables existing club managers to enhance their management tools, but also creates an internationally recognized foundation to inspire and develop talent within our industry, which can only be of benefit to the regional clubs in the long term.”

What sort of work do you do now? I am still in Real Estate, no longer as a broker, but running a family office for a wealthy European investor; I just set up an investor and boutique property portal in the UAE which is really exciting!! My activities in the local golf community like the Senior Amateur Tour or being the distributor for the famous handmade German etrolleys, juCad, are more like a hobby, something I really love to do! Tell us about your family. My parents, who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversarey last year, my sister, nieces and nephews are still living in my home town, a small city in Germany, close to the border of the Netherlands and to Düsseldorf! I am really looking forward to seeing them at Christmas. What’s your favourite childhood memory? I had a great, happy childhood with lots of freedom, fun with my friends but lots of trouble and headache for my parents, so much more then one memory only. What is your best young adult memory? For sure my time in the army - I went as a boy and left as a man! What was your first job after University? I joined a property development company close to my home town and I learned everything there was to learn about real estate from my boss who is now one of my best mates! What has been your best job ever? I’m not sure if you can call it a job, but to run the Senior Amateur Tour is for sure something I really enjoy and Ilove to see my “boys” enjoying playing in these events and having a great time! What is your favourite Dubai pastime after golf: Years ago, I taught a little boy to swim at my local pool; some parents saw that and a week later I had 11 little monkeys between the ages of three and six years of age twice a week for lessons! They are not on the way to the Olympics, but they survived Which is your favourite golf destination? I went to Costa Navarino in Greece a couple of times! My happy place - great golf courses, superb resort, lovely, friendly people, a place to live...

What is your earliest golf memory: I started playing golf only eight years ago, but I got involved with lots of the boys from the European Tour from early on and they signed so much memorabilia for my friends at home! One day I had more than I needed, so, a few years ago, I decided to set up a memorabilia charity page called excellencies-of-golf.com to sell them for charity or give them for auctions at different golf events! What is your best golf shot memory: I had a terrible tee shot at the 14th Majlis but I was happy that I made it to the fairway. I couldn’t see the green so it was a case of ‘hit and hope’. I took a rescue wood and what can I say…it went in for eagle! What has been your greatest on-course golf accomplishment? Reaching a single digit handicap some years ago was something really special for me! What was your favourite golf trip? I went as a fan to the 2011 US Open in Bethasda/ Maryland! Rory won his first Major and I had the privilege to be part of his private party on the Sunday night at the hotel! I was not allowed to post pictures but the USB stick is by far the most valuable I have at home. Lifetime memories and not to mention that I missed my flight next morning! What has been your best golfing experience as a non-golfer? Definitely it was to be a caddie for my mate Joel Sjoholm which was a great, exciting experience! What was your most exciting golf encounter? After I lost my younger sister a few years ago, I organised a Charity Golf event at my home club! Joel Sjoholm and Dominic Foos came to entertain my guests to help to raise money for the hospice where my sister spent her last days! That’s something for which I’ll be grateful for rest of my life; I can’t thank them enough as well as other sponsors like Atlantis the Palm and Mercedes.

ofilE

What was your first job in the Middle East? I came to Dubai early in 2004 as General Manager for German Real Estate broker Engel & Völkers to set up their office in the UAE.

MEMBER PROFILE

What is your first memory of Emirates Golf Club: I wasn’t a golfer but I came to watch the Omega Dubai Desert Classic every year! One day I met the legendary Mike Gerbich when walking the course! We had a great chat and it was so much fun to listen to him and his golf stories that I decided to start playing this amazing game! I will always be grateful to the late Mike Gerbich who was so kind to me when I joined as a member, like my dear friend Kamal Kosta; they introduced me to so many people in the Club! As part of the Members’ Consultative Committee I must say that we are lucky to have our Senior Management of Barney and Chris! They have brought so much with them along the way and they are very open-minded and helpful when it comes to increasing the value for the members of the Club! What do you love about Emirates Golf Club? It’s no secret that I call it my ‘second home’! I love the entire atmosphere, meeting members and friends anytime I come, playing as many events as possible and, for a single man living at the course, it’s the easiest way to get a lunch or dinner I am a really proud member and I love to be at the Club!

A big S2B day was set up on the Friday at the DP Championships with a special F&B package which escalated into a fantastic day while watching world class golf! In other news one of our long term members Richard Aybar got married on 24th November to the lovely Ana at the Kempinski on the Palm. An absolute success! Thanks to Emirates Golf Club for the new location overlooking the pool and for the canapés served to last Monday’s attendees. We look forward to our new home and please be aware there will be an ‘all you can eat roast dinner buffet’ for AED 75 per person available every Monday from now on in the Spike Bar! He has been residing in Dubai since 2009 after years of living in Sweden, Switzerland, United States, France and Austria. He currently works at OSN heading up the company’s Trade Marketing activities in the MENA region. When he’s not at work, practising golf or trying to pretend that squash is his next big thing, he wakes up in the wee hours each day and takes his one year old daughter Nola on a bike ride around the Marina. Final snippet on Filip is his part-time acting and modelling career, where you will see him appearing in advertisement and tourism videos around the world. Oh he is also an amateur magician – a multi-talented individual! 1st: 2nd: 3rd:

The Golfer of the Month award is calculated by the best three scores combined by each player on Mondays. Filip had a great November starting off with a win by four shots shooting 22 points. Filip claims the fourth Golfer of the Month award sponsored by Hawas Gaddafe, joining Ahmad Fakhreddine, Jorg Muller and Darren Hooker. Rob Duczenko (Mr Consistent) was, this month, runner-up for the second time so watch out for him again this December!

On November 25th, S2B team 2 had their second game of the Conares Matchplay when Ahmad, David, Joerg and Hawas all sealed victory for S2B Team 2. In S2B team 1’s first fixture, Kristi and OB Sealey remain undefeated and they also won the best betterball stableford of the day with 41 points – what a couple!! Dave Minchin and Russell Yeomans were defeated in the other game so both teams are well placed in their respective leagues. The next fixture will be on December 16th.

Greenkeeper’s Cuttings

T

he overseeding went very well this year and I would like to thank all our members and guests for their patience during the process. Managing the irrigation during the grow-in is always essential as, without the right amount of water during this crucial time, we simply can’t get the results we desire. You will have noticed that as the Ryegrass germinated, we didn’t mow any of the fairways, tees and approaches for some time. I was doing my morning rounds when an individual simply shouted to me across the 16th fairway that “the grass is too long, cut it”. Well, if you cut it too soon it’s gone for the entire season meaning your golfing experience is

hindered for the rest of the year. Needless to say it was due its first cut within two days, only 12 days since applying the seed. By mowing too soon the juvenile plant gets ripped out and we put the entire process at risk. It’s a game of patience growing in a golf course for a full season. Everything is calculated, including the nutrition, mowing regimes, irrigation cycles and applications of any required products to ensure a healthy stand of grass for all to enjoy. “Do you do this just for the tournaments?” is another stock question I get asked to which I continue to reply, “This is for the membership and guests of Emirates Golf Club! The respective Tours benefit from us, not the other way around”. December is a busy month! A lot of tournaments mean a lot of traffic. Please continue to assist our teams with filling in

Great to have my entire team across both clubs together for an appreciation BBQ to thank them for all their hard work and dedication this season! Thank you Nick Brown and #jacobsen for funding and being part of the get together!

your divots on fairways (in particular on the Majlis as this has a mixture of seed to help recovery quickly), repairing of pitch marks and raking of bunkers. Repairing pitch marks is essential housekeeping and when done correctly will heal inside of 24 hours. An unrepaired pitch mark bruises the plant, gets scalped by the mowers and takes weeks to repair looking unsightly and disturbing ball roll. We appreciate the membership who have inherited their golf holes for the season and look forward to seeing you all take pride in your given areas this year! As always, if you have any questions just ask. I enjoy sharing information and getting feedback both positive and negative. We can only improve by communicating with each other, something I truly enjoy doing. Craig Haldane Director - Golf Course Maintenance

Turkey Kebabs • • • • • • • • • •

500g turkey mince 1 medium onion, minced ¼ green pepper, finely diced ¼ red pepper, finely diced handful of fresh coriander, finely chopped 1 tsp cumin seeds, ground 1 tbsp corn flour 1 tsp pink salt (or chaat masala) 1 tsp chilli powder 1 tsp garam masala

1. Blitz the onion in a blender until fine (not paste) or dice very finely. 2. Mix together the turkey, onion, peppers, coriander, all the spices and corn flour. Combine it together with your hands if it feels too wet add a little more cornflour. 3. Refrigerate it for and hour or so, meanwhile soak your wooden skewers. 4. Form the mixture into flat oval shapes in your hands about 1-2cm thick. Hold the meat flat on your hand and thread the skewer into the meat and place on a plate. This should make 8-10 skewers. (You can refrigerate the mixture again if it becomes too loose and hard to work with). 5. Refrigerate the kebabs until you are ready to cook them. 6. Heat a large frying pan with a little oil and gently pick up the meat (not the skewer) of a kebab. Place it in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes each side until golden.

MAKING THE BIRYANI To make the biryani for the family you can layer it into a casserole dish as per the method below or you can use a ring to make individual portions. Place the lid on the casserole dish and place in the oven at 180oC and cook for 30-40 minutes until piping hot and fragrant.

Roseleaf recipe of the month Christmas in Australia and New Zealand is a very different experience than for ‘northerners’. BEAT THE DIABETES WALK It was great to recently attend ‘Beat the Diabetes Walk’ event. We had over 50 Dubai Golf colleagues attending and the atmosphere was immense with over 20,000 people participating. A big well done to all colleagues who attended and thank you for your support.

Thoracic Spine Mobility is a great exercise not only for golf but for general wellbeing and helping to keep your whole body mobile, plus can help prevent back injuries. The idea behind rolling your thoracic spine is to increase thoracic extension. Try not to roll up and down endlessly as this will not create the desired effect of your thoracic spine. These are three variations of the exercise which you can use to help facilitate thoracic spine extension (see photos) Relax your spine over the roller to produce mobility in the vertebral joints. Fit Lab Member of the Month. Ishu Rupani is an avid gym goer and has done amazingly well over the years in keeping his fitness up. It really is admirable to see what Ishu has achieved. He has always maintained his health and fitness and credit to him as he is a fantastic example for everyone. Well done Ishu - keep up the great work. Healthy Regards Andy Meech Head of Sports & Leisure

GOLF SCREENING AT UPANDRUNNING REHABILATION CENTER Golf screening is now available through our golf specialist physiotherapists at Emirates Golf Club, Dubai. A biomechanical screen for golf breaks down some of the key components of the swing to allow us to assess them. From the screen report, we can then target areas for improvement more objectively. The screen assesses two main components: 1. Mobility: range of motion (in the foot and ankle, the pelvis and hips, the thoracic region and the shoulders) and flexibility (in key areas including around the hips and the posterior chain musculature). 2. Stability: This includes assessment of balance, strength, and control in the main muscles involved in the movement chain The information obtained from the screen can be shared with your golf professional/ coach and can then be used by your physiotherapist or strength and conditioning specialist to plan a more targeted conditioning programme to improve your game. To book an appointment please call 04 518 5400 or visit upandrunningdubai.co

FOR HIM… If you are looking to buy something special, this Anser putter is the gift for this year. Yes, it’s more expensive than an ordinary production putter, but this putter is so much more than a club you putt with. The putter lover will gush over this limited release. The PING 50th Anniversary Anser putter brings the history of Karsten Solheim and his sons with it. The design set the stage for so many putters that came in the decades after its inception. It speaks to the brilliance of the initial design, and also to PING’s work to make that design better in the years that followed. The Anser is the foundational putter design for the past fifty years, and it is the “most copied” equipment design perhaps in all of golf. Just imagine if it never happened. A fun fact on how the Ping putter got its name: the name was inspired by karstens desire to find an “answer” to the popular putter of the time. his wife, louise, suggested he call it “answer” but karsten was concerned it was too long to fit on the toe. she told him to leave out the “w” and the rest is history. specs: ping 50th anniversary anser

Whether as a coffee table mainstay or gift to a fellow golf lover, And The Putter Went… PING Book, written by Jeffrey B. Ellis (author of The Clubmaker’s Art: Antique Golf Clubs and their History), provides a glossy history of the transformative family-owned company that began in Karsten Solheim’s garage in 1959. The 530-page tome is packed with nearly 1,000 photographs, details the conception and execution of the iconic Anser putter and Eye2 irons, and covers the “square groove” debate from the late 1980s.
