Thanks once again to Surender Kandhari and family for their generous support of the Hankook Greensomes event with goes from strength to strength each year; it is always oversubscribed, attracting players from many other clubs around the Gulf and it is always a great weekend of socialising and fun (and good golf too, by many of the participants!) We often take some of the Club events for granted but they happen and run smoothly thanks to our colleagues in the Golf Office who put everything together - the draw, arranging the on-course special prizes and general organisation of each event. Thanks to the entire team at the Golf Office, also to the F&B department and to Rhys, Cian, and Jonathan who deal with registration, checking of cards and post-tournament press releases. We are nearing the end of our season; it’s incredible how quickly the time has flown and we are now moving towards the very hot summer months so many members will soon start heading out to cooler climates; however, there is still a lot happening at our fantastic Club to keep you all busy if you are here, so check out the golfing and social events and try to support them. Although there will be one more issue of Club Life after this one..the summer issue...which sees us through to the beginning of the new season in September, I would like to thank all the contributors for their help throughout the season. I know I hassle you all for material and set you deadlines, but I really appreciate all your efforts, in particular, Club Captain, Paul Byrne, Lady Captain, Sulafa Hamdan, GCM Superintendent Matt Perry, Recreation Manager, Andy Meech, the Bespoke Wellness team, Sarah Dufton, PR for SensAsia Spa, Stephen Deane and all the Professionals Executive Chef Nicholas Cuomo, Barney Coleman, Golf Services Manager Rhys James as well as Cian and Jonathan who are always my ‘go-to’ guys when I am missing photos or information. Special thanks also to Dubai Golf Publishing, especially to Ganesh, Vinod and Eugene who are always so obliging and hard-working and who are often under pressure to do rush jobs.

Dear Members, As we draw to the end of the season, it would be remiss of me not to reflect on 14th April 2019 and the awesome performance of one Tiger Woods to clinch his 15th Major title. The Spike Bar was a full house to see our two-time Omega Dubai Desert Classic champion clinch his 5th Green Jacket …fantastic! I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate our Captain Paul Byrne for hosting a fabulous Captain’s Day on 26th April; it was truly one of the best days I have been part of at the Club in 13 years. Well done and thanks to all the members who supported the day. The Omega Dubai Moonlight Classic was well received by Professionals, Amateurs and Sponsors; hats off to Matthew Perry and his Golf Course Maintenance team for presenting the Faldo course in the best condition it has been since opening in 2006. We now move into May and the last official month on the golfing calendar. Off the course, our Ramadan Tent is definitely worth a visit and look out for the summer extension to our Carine restaurant as we increase our dining capacity over the summer months. MEMBER QUESTIONNAIRE Thank you to those members who took the time to complete the member questionnaire - the feedback is much appreciated. Throughout my time as Club Manager, I have been committed to listening to feedback and working with the Members’ Consultative Committee to promote positive change, where applicable, to benefit the membership as a whole. Please find below some of the frequently raised points with my responses. If you feel any specific feedback that you forwarded through the questionnaire has not been addressed, please do not hesitate to contact me and we can talk through at the Club.

Finally, thank you to everyone who takes the time to write to me with comments about Club Life - these are much appreciated.

you are, on or off the golf course, please forward your photos to jaxdubai@ gmail.com (high resolution, if possible please!) With the high temperatures already upon is, don’t forget to keep yourself hydrated on the golf course, slap on the sunscreen and drink plenty....of water!

Who could not have been impressed by Tiger Woods’ win at the Augusta Masters last month. It was an incredible comeback and a superb win, putting Tiger back in the spotlight again when he had been written off by many. It was a moment that many sports fans thought would never happen after a series of back surgeries pushed Woods to the brink of retirement.

1. Availability of weekend tee times – Majlis course We understand that the majority of members would prefer to play the Majlis at weekends. By hosting shotgun starts, it allows us to maximise the number of 18 hole rounds a day. Two full shotguns for example at 8am and 1pm can accommodate 208 golfers. Based on this number being the maximum, not every member can be guaranteed a weekend game on the Majlis and will have to book on the Faldo. We recognise that we still allow a member to play with guests at weekends; the reason for this is that we feel it is a membership benefit to be able to invite three friends to your Club. However, the percentage of member-guest play on weekends (as below) is less than 10%.

Thanks to his 15th major win, Woods is now ranked No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

This was a fifth win at Augusta for Woods, but the most recent was 14 years ago. It is his longest gap between Masters wins ever and it has been almost 11 years since Woods won his last major tournament (2008 U.S. Open).

Slow play has been discussed more and more within the Club over the past few seasons. I would like to confirm that the marshals have the full support of Club Management and they have full authority on the course. However, on many occasions they are not always given the respect they deserve. Ultimately, by the rules of golf, it is the responsibility of the golfer to play without any undue delay, to rake bunkers, repair pitch marks. However, if a course marshal speaks to you regarding any of the above, please grant them the level of respect they deserve, knowing that the decisions they make are being backed and supported by Club Management.

3. Challenges of booking weekend tee times online at 6am?

As mentioned in point 1, there is a large volume of members logging on at 6am on a Tuesday and Wednesday to book for the weekend ahead in 10 days. Our feeling is that members within the same 4-ball are logging in to give themselves the best opportunity to get their desired tee time. If, for example, three of the members are successful, they will need to cancel two bookings. Please bear this in mind and if unsuccessful, please call the reservation team and ask to be put on the waiting list and you will be called as soon as a vacancy becomes available.

4. Why don’t you show all the tee times and players on the online booking system. This is possible but impractical. Online booking was originally introduced to counteract the queuing system whereby members lined up in person to book popular weekend times. The main frustration surrounding online booking are for Fridays and Saturdays, 10 days in advance. Over 40 tee times can be booked in less than five minutes; showing all the times and the names booked would impact the speed and efficiency of the system. By the time the screen shows all the times and your fellow members’ names it will have already changed as it is in constant transition. Once you consider the screen, it will be out-dated by the time you are ready to book. This is also the reason why we are showing and blocking one tee time as opposed to showing six tee times as we did in the past.

5. Visitors have more rights; members should have priority at weekends!

While you are travelling this summer, please take some photos of you and your families for the ‘Where were our Members this Summer’ feature. It’s always a fun and interesting feature in Club Life I think, so wherever

2. Slow play and poor etiquette - marshals have no power and need to be given more authority?

Member play on the Majlis course on weekends (Friday/Saturday) for the past two seasons from 1st October to 30th April is 86% with another 9% being member - guest rounds. This is largely due to our Club’s policy, adopted in December 2013, that Friday and Saturday tee times were allocated to members and their guests in peak season periods, ensuring as many tee times are available as possible for members at the weekends, which is reflected in the Majlis statistic above. If you are unfortunate to secure a tee time then always ask Francis’s team at Reservations to put you on the waiting list. Also entering member tournaments (e.g. Monthly Medals) will guarantee you a tee time and you will then avoid the 10-day booking.

Members have a 10-day booking window. Nonmembers (e.g. through Tour Operators) are able to book a specific allocation of tee times in advance; other visitors including Emirates Golf Federation members may book seven days in advance. Also note, as above, no advanced visitor allocation has been allowed on the weekends since December 2013 (prior to this, six tee times were reserved for visitors on a weekend)

6. Still many non-members are seen at the weekend; there is a perception that certain individuals have preferred booking rights.

The only non-members, particularly on the Majlis course, will be members’ guests. Certain members do have preferred booking rights as below: • Current captains and Vice-Captains may book 14 days in advance • Past Captains may book 14 days in advance on six occasions during the season • Any member competing in a matchplay competition may book 11 days in advance

7. Tee times are held back/blocked from members on weekends.

The only time this happens is for Member/Open tournaments. There are occasions, if the entries are lower than expected, that times are released back to members post the 10-day booking window. When this occurs, members on the waiting list are contacted first. Many cancellations give the impression that times are held back but this is not the case.

8. Late cancellations resulting in gaps on course. The cancellation policy is actively enforced; constant offenders are now also monitored

9. It is impossible to book at short notice.

This is correct, particularly for weekends, as your fellow members will have booked up to 10 days in advance.

10. Online booking should open later than 6am. In the past, we have had a number of members request not to move later than 6am due to conflict with school, work and other commitments.

11. Majlis course is closed for corporate events. A number of corporate events are staged on weekdays, generally a 1pm shotgun start. No corporate events are hosted on weekends. Thursday is a popular afternoon but we generally host only two corporate events per month on the Majlis on a Thursday. We also acknowledge that the Majlis course walking period is extensive from 1st November to 6th February. It is essential to adopt this practice to present the course in peak condition, not only for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic but, more importantly, for member play throughout the winter months. Note, any future changes and improvements to the Majlis course will consider including a cart path throughout the course to nullify this drawback. Please also note the Omega Dubai Ladies Classic did not happen in December. It was moved to the Faldo course from 1-3 May. This resulted in nine more days play in December for the membership on the flagship Majlis course. In addition, the over-seeding reduced from a five-day closure early November to a two-day closure in December (3rd and 4th). The fairways and greens were not over-seeded resulting in less disruption. Therefore, the changes to the previous season were 14 days better playing conditions in November and 12 days less closure (in peak season) due to professional events. These initiatives were adopted to improve the member experience.

12. There are not enough members’ lockers and inadequate space for members’ guests to change in the visitors’ area.

The male locker room does need to be increased in size. With time we plan to increase the capacity by knocking through to the bag storage area which will increase lockers by 100. We are also looking at options to add a steam room to the ladies’ locker room.

13. Fewer shotgun starts.

Particularly during peak season when daylight hours are short, shotgun starts maximise the capacity of the Majlis course. This is essential due to the main complaint of poor availability of the Majlis at weekends. Whenever we host an afternoon member or guest tournament we have a morning shotgun preceding it. A two-tee start prior to an afternoon weekday shotgun is another option. This will give members the option of teeing off between 6:40am-8:20am as opposed to 8am.

14. Sometimes difficult to book because of many tournaments

The tournament calendar is busy and full of events; this has been reduced over the years to maintain the most popular events and free up weekends for members who are not interested in participating in tournaments. NOTE, all tournaments on the Majlis course over weekends are members’ events or the occasional Open Championship.

15. No weekday tournaments

Weekday tournaments have failed in the past due to poor entry levels but very shortly you will see Dubai Golf Weekday Medals advertised. We hope that by opening the Weekday Medal up to all members across Dubai Golf then entries will increase. Also, it will provide the opportunity for members to play all five courses under Dubai Golf management PLEASE ALSO NOTE: we recently changed the Weekday Membership privileges by offering reciprocal access at Dubai Creek and the Fire Course from Sunday – Wednesday between May to September.

16. One driving range is now a challenge as it is very busy; we also need an upgraded short game practice area. The Academy Team, Matthew Perry and I met with Pete Cowen recently and we agreed on the changes required for the practice facilities. Over the summer months you will notice a number of changes including: 1. Majlis short game area – re-designed, enlarged,

more chipping space provided 2. Majlis far end – driving range modifications to increase width of hitting lines plus modifications to the chipping green 3. Faldo short game area (near par 3 course) – changes to improve short game practice options 4. Majlis driving range – bunkers reduced in size to aid ball collection and aesthetics of therange.

Last month was another extremely busy month at the Club with some major events having taken place, namely the Hankook Greensomes over two days, Easter Scrambles, Talker Cup, Curtisy Cup, Annual Captains’ dinner. Master’s weekend at Augusta and just last week, Paul Byrne’s Captain’s Day. Although I was not there for Paul’s day, I have heard that it was a superb, fun-filled day and evening - what else would you expect? Thank you Paul for putting on such a tremendous day which I know took a lot of time and effort to organise.

During the season we decided to opt for wraps as opposed to sandwiches as we felt that wraps maintain their freshness and they are easier to eat whilst continuing your round. We received a number of positive comments on these. Unfortunately, the planned GPS food ordering couldn’t be launched due to signal and reliability issues. The coffee still seems to be a bone of contention on-course and we will look to resolve this.

18. F&B pricing and service

• We price all our menu items competitively with other restaurants/bars/golf clubs in the region before the members’ discount is applied. • Attentiveness of the F&B team has been mentioned on numerous occasions; we will work with the team to improve this area so you are not wasting time trying to get the attention of a waiter. The service to outdoor areas has also been highlighted and we will strive to improve this. • General service in Spike is monitored through our mystery golfer collaboration with ’59 Club’ which can help us focus on areas of weakness.

Fit Lab

1. Gym needs updating, particularly the changing rooms. This is correct - the Fit Lab changing rooms are small and this issue will be addressed in the future development of the clubhouse. Note, the new swimming pool bathroom and family cubicle has taken some pressure off the Fit Lab changing rooms. 2. I would like to see a dedicated stretching area in a safe place in the gym. This has been requested previously but space is limited. 3 Tennis booking process Ways to make this more user friendly will be considered

Members’ Consultative Committee Action points since September 2018:

• Online booking now searches backwards as well as forwards for closest available time • Automatic registration for games on the handicap system • Plastic reduction commenced (cups, straws, bottles, bags) • New pool furniture • Stricter cancellation/no-show policy for golf rounds • LED lighting on Faldo course, Par 3 and driving range • Option to book JGE on-line • Local rule for balls hitting lamppost changed

Areas identified for improvement

Parking for Emirates Golf Club members – available spaces will be increased over the summer. Cap-Ex investment to adopt a member-only parking area is on hold but planned for future developments. Wi-fi: in the coming days you will see a new process whereby members log on once per device and you will be automatically remembered and logged on to the wi-fi. Dubai Golf APP developments – to include new features such as redeeming electronic reward vouchers Caddies – to be classed as Caddie or Bag Carrier depending on ability Reduce plastic water bottle consumption – we hope to be in a position shortly to announce a sponsor to allow us to give all members and visitors a refillable flask, allowing us to remove plastic water bottles at the cart staging area I welcome further feedback on the above points and any additional topics not covered to improve your member experience. Please drop me an email on bcoleman@dubaigolf.com or we can catch up in person at the Club. Kind regards Barney Coleman

Dear All What a busy April and May we have had at the Club and I hope everyone had a chance to partake in some of the events. The Hankook Greensomes had a full field as always and it was a wonderful event. For the oldies in the Club we had the Porsche Seniors Open which I was lucky to defend. Congratulations to Gary Black who captained the European team to victory in the Talker Cup which was followed by a great night of celebrations. The Easter Scramble had a fantastic turn out and some nice yellow golfing attire was noted during the day too. Congratulations to the ladies representing Europe in the Curtisy Cup who defeated the Rest of World team in a very tightly contested competition - a nice double victory for the men’s and ladies’ European teams in the two big events. Then we were onto my Captain’s Day which took place on 26th April. What a day from start to finish and my thanks go to everyone who played on the day and partied through the night. All the men at check-in received a Nike tee shirt, sponsored by ABB as well as a beautiful golfing gift pack, sponsored by Swiss Global. My intention was to have a funfilled day with some unusual ideas on certain holes. The day started with my drive-in and I got the ball away off the tee, thank goodness (261 yards). The format of the day was a two-person scramble for all the players with the men on the Majlis and the ladies on the Faldo. We had plenty of novelty events during the day starting with the second hole and Pauly’s Pikey Pub to have a little tipple before you hit your shot. There was a Hankook challenge to land the ball in the

tyre from 121 yards. On the fourth hole was where Dubai Duty Free got the players to try a baby Guinness; thanks to Bryan Smyth who was responsible for the club selection to the pin. You had to select a club from a blind draw and whatever club you selected was the one you had to hit to the green. The club selections were a driver, PW, 7 iron and putter. There were some great laughs watching some of the shots.

Guinness, was a busy station.

The highlight of the day for many players was on the sixth hole where we had a water dunk tank set up where you had the chance to dunk our Lady Captain Sulafa, Lady Vice-Captain Yana and our GM Barney by hitting the bullseye with a baseball. If you were successful, you moved up to the ladies’ tee to hit and if you missed you teed off from the black tee. There was a lot of concentrating going on and I’m not sure if was to get an advantage on the tee or the chance to dunk one of the three willing volunteers. It proved to be a fun-filled activity with a lot of laughs and screams from the three volunteers when they were dunked.

The evening was outdoors at the Royal Majlis by the 8th green which was perfect and the food and entertainment was enjoyed by all. The food theme was Irish and I’m sure I have converted some people to gammon and stew. Thanks to Barney for organising a signed framed picture with Shane Lowry and also to our fabulous ladies who entertained us with a version of “Reach Out”. Paddyman entertained us for the night and, judging by the dance floor, he certainly got everyone moving and grooving.

On the seventh hole, to hit the green you had to use an opposite handed putter. Some of the attempts were not pretty but they were funny to watch. When you got to the ninth tee, you could again visit Pauly’s Pikey Pub and then attempt the football dart board. This was a huge inflatable dart board which had to be hit with a football from 12 yards away. If you hit the black part of the board you had to tee off from the black tee, but if you hit the white you moved up to the ladies’ tee which is a huge advantage on that hole. It was funny to watch people kicking or should I say, not kicking, the ball at the target. There were some divots which were bigger than if a wedge had been used. Thanks to Rhys and Cian who manned this and made sure no one cheated. The eleventh hole had a snooker cue challenge. On the green you had to use a snooker cue to putt the ball in the hole. I’m not sure which was funnier, watching the guys lying down to use the cue or watching them trying to get back up. The twelfth tee box had the usual pit-stop for food and drinks; many thanks to Steen and his team for laying on a fantastic spread. I could see that our biggest Irish export,

Finally the fifteenth hole had a Ford Mustang on offer for a hole-in-one. Thank you to Al Tayer and RSA for providing this with all the players trying harder than normal to hole out. Unfortunately we did not get a hole-in-one on the day. Thanks to Matt who set up the course in immaculate condition for my day. Everyone loved the fast greens…I think!!

Thanks again to everyone at the Club who assisted me before and during my day and thanks to all our members who participated. We just finished the Ladies’ Moonlight Classic on the Faldo which I have to say was a brilliant event. I was lucky enough to play in the Pro-Am over two days and I have to say that the Faldo was presented in unbelievable condition. I didn’t think Faldo greens could ever be as good as the Majlis but I have to compliment and say a huge well done to Matt and his team for the conditions. The Professionals I spoke to had nothing but high praise and what a finish to the tournament with the result coming down to the 18th. Congratulations to all and I’m sure this is the future of more ladies’ events.

Finally hard luck to our Scratch Team, captained by Mike Mezei, who narrowly got beaten in the final against Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. It came right down to one match which was halved which gave the Creek victory. Well done to all the team and for knocking on the door once again which I know will result in a final win soon.

PAUL BYRNE’S Captain’s Day

Congratulations to Team Europe on winning the 2019 Talker Cup last month This was started in May 1988 by Richard Chiarantona and, since then, it has gone from strength to strength. There were two events in 1988 so this year was the 33rd one. Well done to both teams in what was a great day, played in true Talker Cup spirit with Europe ultimately winning the trophy this year.

Friday 26th April 2019 Paul Byrne’s Captain’s Day was hosted on the Majlis course on Friday 26th April 2019 which was a pairs scramble format with many special and novelty events hosted on-course.

from Team Europe Captain, Gary Black I would like to thank the European team and also our North American counterpart for our recent encounter. It was a whitewash on paper, but the day swung back and forth and it really was more competitive than the score reflected. Both teams looked great in colours and were well matched, but Team Europe found the extra gear and we were able to get it over the line. Thank you to my team for supporting me as your Captain. There is a lot of work that goes on in the background, but all team members were always there to provide guidance.

Congratulations to the overall winning team, Mike Kaye and Chris Asher, scoring a fantastic net score of 55.6. Taking the runnersup position was the team of James Scallon and Graham Pascal with a net 61.9. Achal Ghai and Harshdeep Munjal took third place with a net 64.4. Scott MacPherson was the lucky winner to have guessed the Captain’s drive of 261 yards and Darren Cole claimed the Hit the Tyre prize on hole 2.

Thanks also to the North America Captain, Chris Gould and his Vice-Captain Mike Mezei. It was difficult at times to get together and plan the event, but it all came together on the day and it worked out really well. Mike Tracey as always was the gel that pulled the whole thing together. His cabaret act at the evening event outshone his performance on the course by some margin. Thanks Mr Mike! Big thank you to our colleagues at Emirates Golf Club for making the event possible. Both courses were in fantastic shape, and the food at the evening event was some of the best that we have experienced.

In the Ladies’ Division, which was held on the Faldo Course, the winners were Anvita Kapoor and Mitsuko Emmerson who carded a great net score of 62. Congratulations to all players and to all winners and also a massive thank you to Club Captain Paul Byrne for hosting such a fantastic day filled with fun and laughter for all involved - a most memorable experience without doubt.

All that is left to say is, “Best of luck to next year’s Captains Joe Smith (God help us) and Mike Mezei and their Vice-Captains elect.

from Team North America Captain, Chris Gould, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the 2019 Talker Cup. I received wonderful support from my team, as well as all the hard work that Vice-Captain Mike put in during the preparation for the day. Congratulations to Gary Black and his European team for retaining the cup and we very much look forward to next year’s event. Special thanks need to go to our colleagues at Emirates Golf Club, especially the F&B team, the Golf Office, Rhys, Cian and Jonathan, the bag storage and range guys. Also I would like to thank Mike Tracey whose MC’s abilities gave everyone a wonderful, entertaining evening. I was very proud and honoured to be the Captain for Team North America and, although we did not regain the cup, the winners on the day were all those who participated in the way golf should be played - with honour, integrity and sportsmanship.

Once again, I consider myself extremely lucky to have attended the colleagues’ party and to witness their talent show. So many gifted people surround us - well done to all the performers. I think you may have outdone previous performances which have always been incredible as well.

So many great events have taken place since my last write-up, starting with the much anticipated Members’ Party. This was undoubtedly the most discussed social event in our ladies’ group chat: Is it happening? Is the weather going to improve? I am going to the hairdresser, should I cancel? Wednesday 27th March witnessed unprecedented rainfall, all day and night, and our party was cancelled just a few hours before it was due to start. A big applause must go out to the all our colleagues at Emirates Golf Club, from the top down, who magically handled and rescheduled the event for the following day, making it a great night to remember. Thank you to all members who donated prizes for the colleagues’ raffle and, believe me, being able to see the faces of joy on the lucky winners was a prize in itself. Ladies’ section news: • Throughout the year our ladies compete in the InterClub Championship when 12 great clubs from across the UAE battle it out in their leagues. We are so proud to say that once again we brought the trophy home. Well done to all the ladies who got us to the finals.

• Jonathan Laws is going back to Exeter University in September and will be missed by our ladies’ section. He has spent a very memorable and happy time here during his internship at the Club. Curtisy Cup: • Well done to both Captains, Amarjeet Radia and Ingrid Lind for continuing the great spirit and sportsmanship that this event is renowned for. What a day and evening! Well done to Team Europe who, in a nail-biting finish, took back the cup. The cup went missing once again, a tradition started by Ashley…but who was the victim who found the cup hidden inside her bag later on that night when she got home?

• The Easter Scramble cannot be missed from my write-up. What a wonderful turnout for the ladies, all dressed in yellow and pastel colours with the most creative bonnets and bunny ears I have ever seen. The looks from members and visitors was real proof of the fun the ladies have.

Finally, Paul Byrne’s Captain’s Day wrapped up all the fun. We were entertained throughout the day by the dunk tank, the dart board, the Pauly truck, as well as the people who attended and who made the day as joyful as the night when we were entertained brilliantly by Paddyman. Well done to the Captain who showed his true fun spirit in this unforgettable event.

• Sadly we had two farewells last month - our lovely and bubbly Past Captain, Elise Hanson will be leaving us to start a new adventure in the UK as well as

Curtisy Cup 2019 The Curtisy Cup is an annual event played over 36 holes between Europe and the Rest of the World, this year captained by Ingrid Lind (Europe) and Amarjeet Radia (Rest of the World); this was the 28th event which was keenly contested and a very close result with Europe winning the trophy by a mere half a point. Eligibility for the teams is through Order of Merit points gained from Medal competitions so if you did not qualify this year, make sure you play the Monthly Medals next season as the Curtisy Cup is now one of the highlights of the ladies’ calendar. The morning rounds are always greensomes and the afternoon rounds are fourball butterball matches - a format which has not changed since the inception of this event. Without a doubt, the Curtisy Cup is an event in which everyone wants to play.

Picture the scene (two days before the tournament)…a mellow evening gets stirred up by the arousal of two teams of women, who are both equally driven to write history - Team Europe and Team Rest of the World. The ROW Team, captained by Amarjeet Radia, dressed like ‘Knights in White Satin ready to hear the gladiators’ pairing against the Brexitless Bunch of Europe. The end result was a bacchanal of 40 ladies roaring about their upcoming duels, rounded off with a table-dancing contest: the dice were cast. The day itself started with early arrivals of two spectacularly geared out squads. Team ROW were equipped with newly branded golf-bags, whereas Europe kept it simple with a towel (to dry potential tears) and Tiger-chewing gum for utmost concentration. Cian, as starter and referee, fulfilled his task fervently, emphasis to it being the most important event of the ladies’ calendar.

Whether you are a player, a Vice-Captain or Captain, it is always an honour and a pleasure to participate in this exciting event; our colleagues at the Club do their utmost to make it a great day with flags on carts, scoring, tee time allocation F&B etc…and the rest is entirely up to the players. What makes it such an eagerly awaited day?…the build-up to the event with team meetings and socials, the unique atmosphere on the day and the support and camaraderie amongst friends and team-mates. Win or lose, I cannot recall an occasion when players have not joined in with the celebrations afterwards; the camaraderie is second to none, the singing, the dancing, the laughter and the fun. Congratulations again to Team Europe and well done to all players!

first four matches, resulting in with wins with another match halved. At this stage, ROW only needed another half a point in order to retain their title but there were still three more flights out on the course. A nail-biting finish followed with all players and supporters assembled on the last hole in order to get a glimpse of the live action. Almost simultanously the three flights came in but initially the outcome was not clear. It turned out that all three matches were won by Europe meaning that they snatched the Cup by the slightest of margins!! What a finish and what a fantastic day was had by all. I would like to thank our Club for giving us the opportunity to have the Majlis course all day to play this fantastic event and many thanks must go to the Spike team for arranging all the catering. Amarjeet, my fellow Captain, I enjoyed our meetings and strategic planning; well done for getting your team in top form.

What followed was a stream of matches, greensomes in the morning and betterball in the afternoon, both matchplay formats. The morning matches were played in good spirits and ended with a slight advantage for Europe. After enjoying a lovely lunch, prepared by the ever-dedicated colleagues in Spike, both teams re-engaged with the competition.

Fiona Berry, my Vice-Captain, your support in the build-up and on the day was a great boost to our success: I now hand you the Captain’s band as you prepare to lead us to the next battle; and, of course, Team Europe…what a team spirit. Thank you for believing in yourselves and for bringing this cup back, although I am not sure of its whereabouts as we speak.

Both Captains opted not to play as they had made the prior decision to drive around together in one buggy to cheer on their respective teams.

Well done to all on the fair play and cameraderie… and the bubbly-shower party in the ladies’ locker room: what happens in there remains in there.

The afternoon looked very much in favour of Rest of the World. They excelled in the

Firstly, I would like to congratulate all the participants of the Curtisy Cup who worked so hard throughout the year, to get their points and qualify for this very special day! I was honoured to lead a great ROW team this year, all of whom fought hard throughout the 36 holes, losing by just half a point! Europe, came through with an incredible set of scores and so special congratulations to the winning and deserving Team Europe! No doubt we will be back fighting next year! The entire process was an experience I will cherish, thanks to the support and bond I was able to develop with my fellow Captain, Ingrid. From the very start, we put our heads together to ensure a unified and fun tournament for both teams. A highlight for me this year was definitely the joint evening the teams enjoyed on 21st which allowed both teams to let their hair down and get into a united spirit before the Curtisy Cup! I would like to thank all those involved in making this event happen - all the hard work from the entire Emirates Golf Club team make an event like this possible! Thanks to Rhys and Cian, for your continued support and guidance on the rules! The F&B surpassed all our expectations thanks to Chef Nicholas, Chef Dayan, Steen and Sri Raj. I would like to say a big thank-you to Atlas Group, Amit, my dear husband who sponsored the lunch and the dinner on 24th April. Thanks also for all the support behind the scenes and for being there every step of the way. I am very grateful! Last but not least, I would like to thank Jayshree Gupta who stepped in as my Vice-Captain due to Noemy’s travel commitments! As always, Jayshree went above and beyond and I cannot thank her enough for all the commitment and encouragement! Now Noemy and Fiona take over the Captaincies of Curtisy Cup and we would like to wish them the best in leading their teams to victory. We are always just a swing away if you ever need anything! NURIA CREATES NIGHT FEVER AT THE INAUGURAL OMEGA DUBAI MOONLIGHT CLASSIC

Won the Pro-Am at Omega Dubai Moonlight Classic 2019. Simply Awesome !!! Thank you to my playing partners, Golf Professional Camille Chevalier, Omega, Emirates Golf Club and special thanks to my home club Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club for providing the opportunity Glory Xavier

“It’s amazing to win again and I’m so excited,” said Iturrios, who became the first player to capture consecutive titles since Aditi Ashok at the Indian and Qatar Opens in 2016. “Congratulations to Esther, Olivia and every player in the field. It was so cool. I loved playing in the first day-night tournament and I hope to come back next year.” The LET order of merit leader began the final round tied for the lead with Henseleit, but the rookie professional admitted to feeling the pressure on the first tee as she contended for her first title. Iturrios birdied the second and third holes to quickly build a three stroke lead, but bogeyed the sixth and then dropped into a share of the lead with Ireland’s Leona Maguire after a double on the seventh, where she found the water off the tee. However, she regained the outright lead at the turn by rolling in a simple birdie putt on the ninth green. She birdied the 10th, but then three-putted the 11th before picking up another shot at the 14th. She came to the last with a one stroke lead and both Henseleit and Cowan had birdie putts to force a play-off, but Iturrios two putted from eight metres to earn the title, an Omega watch and the famous Dallah trophy.

Congratulations to Spaniard Nuria Iturrios who claimed the 2019 Omega Moonlight Classic with a three round total of -10 over our Faldo Course. With this win, Emirates Golf Club is delighted to welcome Nuria as an honorary member of Emirates Golf Club. Nuria lifted the Dallah Trophy and won the first ever professional day-night tournament It was great to have welcomed the Ladies European Tour players under our new LED Lights and we hope this leads the way for more tournaments to be held in the evening on floodlit courses!

Warm-Up Many amateur golfers still believe that warming up before you play can be a bit of an inconvenience but on tour this procedure is vital and very detailed. PGA tour players will conduct a specific warmup routine that they stick to prior to every round which, on average, is about 115 shots over 50 minutes.

Concentrate on aspects such as balance and rhythm (80% shots) - it’s too late in the day to be thinking about swing mechanics.

A good practice routine has many benefits; before you play you need to get a feel for your swing and the ball and improve your strike pattern. This will enhance your confidence going onto the course. Try to use many of the clubs you will typically use during the round. If you follow the same routine weekly, this will set you up perfectly for your game and offer good time management.

Sand wedge 6 x ¾ swing Pitching wedge 6 x ¾ swing 8 iron 8 shots at specific target 5 iron 5 shots at specific target Hybrid (no tee) 4 shots in between 20 yard targets Driver 7 shots in between 30 yard target (thinking of my tee shot ahead) If it is a shotgun and you are opening up with a par 3 go to the club you will use and hit three shots. Total 36 shots

I have been through this structure with many of my clients before a course playing lesson/game analysis and the results of many players have shown significant improvements in scoring.

Below is my structured routine – 73 shots over 35 mins approx. (over 50% on short game)

OVER TO THE CHIPPING GREEN Sand wedge 6 high 25 yard shots 9 iron 4 low running chips Bunker 8 shots Total 18 shots PUTTING GREEN 5 putts from 5 feet 5 putts from 10 feet 5 putts from 10 feet moving clockwise around the hole 4 putts from 30 feet (I see many players putting from hole to hole and 15/20 feet is not the length to practise as your success rate is low. Focus on make-able putts you will have to save on the course, then finish with a few speed putts. Total 19 putts Total shots 73 Time total 35mins Off to the first tee!!

We’re certainly not about clubhouse cliques, old-fashioned dress codes or petty rules. After all, this is the 21st century. We like to think we play a different game: more relaxed, more welcoming, more about you and your enjoyment of two great golf courses.

At Archerfield Links, it’s definitely not golf as usual

The historic 17th Century Mansion House, which can include names such as Winston Churchill and Mary Queen of Scots in its history, is the jewel in the crown of the 70 bedrooms offered across the 550 acre estate. Golf Archerfield Links comprises two 18 hole golf courses, the Fidra Links and the Dirleton Links, both of which were designed by European Seniors Tour player and Ryder Cup Vice-Captain David J Russell. Fidra Links Home to the 2015 Scottish Senior Open. The par 72 Fidra Links is

a mixture of pine forest and fast running links, on land where golf has been played for over 100 years. In more recent years the Fidra Links has played host to the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open, Gary Player European Invitational and charity events for Sir Ian Botham, Darren Clarke and Ian Woosnam. Dirleton Links The Dirleton Links, also a par 72, is more of a traditional Links course with the front nine holes passing the back of the imposing Archerfield House and nearby village of Dirleton, from which the course takes its name. The Dirleton Links offers a different challenge to the Fidra, with menacing bunkers and undulating dunes bordering the fairways. Spa Now offering far more than just golf for those visiting the property, Archerfield House opened the

acclaimed Fletcher’s Cottage Spa in March 2012 and it has fast become a ‘must visit’ destination in the UK. Fletcher’s Cottage Spa, is a rustic yet luxurious spa, offering peace and tranquillity for those looking for the perfect spa retreat. Whilst the ethos of Fletcher’s Cottage focuses strongly on health and wellbeing, the treatments all use natural and organic brands including Sisley, Aromatherapy Associates, Spezia Organics and VOYA, guests are still very welcome to tuck into a brownie and sip a glass of Billecart-Salmon Champagne. FITNESS ACTIVITY SCHEDULE 2019

2. Re-establish your goals

Set yourself realistic fitness goals. By doing this you always have a plan and this will help you attain your fitness targets. Setting targets can provide motivation and focus.

3. Set time scales for your progress

As soon as you have set your targets, you should then set time-scales and deadlines, monitor and review your goals to allow for constant improvement. As you achieve your goals, set new ones, and keep up the momentum of success.

4. Do more sprint training Including sprint training in your routine can improve your speed and muscle strength as well as helping with weight loss. Sprint work helps improve metabolism, which means you’ll burn more calories. It can improve your physique, making you leaner and more toned. It works the legs, glutes and core, burning the fat and building muscle. It’s high intensity, so it’s important that you train safely and sensibly.

5. Try something new

Doing the same fitness routine each day not only leads to boredom but it also does not challenge your body. Look into slight changes like lifting more, running further, running faster or even starting a class that involves something totally different. Mix things up a bit - it will keep you motivated and, at the same time, it will improve your fitness level.

6. Find something new to motivate you

There are many fitness apps which could be useful for trying something different or for varying your programme, Several apps also give you the option of competing against other athletes. There are even apps for weight loss, one of the best I have come across being ‘My Fitness Pal’; this allows you to enter all food you eat during the day which then displays the number of calories consumed and it also lets you log your fitness activities, as well as sharing information with others.

7. Track your improvements

By tracking your improvements, you will be able to see what progress you have made, whether it be fitness levels or weight loss. Weigh yourself at the start of any ‘healthy kick’. Check your fitness levels by times for your running, number of reps of exercises, amount of weight lifted etc. I hope the tips I have outlined will help with your fitness. If you require any additional help, please contact me or one of my team. Andy Meech Head of Sports & Leisure

Summer – A not so impossible feet!

Alas, summer is upon us and as we prepare for the inevitable heat and sticky months ahead, we cannot forget to take care of the one thing that will be carrying us through the dreaded months…our feet! While flip-flops are our natural go-to footwear, over-wearing this summertime staple can cause stress fractures, heel pain and even tendonitis! We must remember that these are not shoes that we should be wearing from 8am to 8pm and here’s how you can make flip-flops a safer footwear choice: • Look for a pair with a thicker sole as these tend to provide more arch support. • The more straps the better! Straps can help reduce the need for toe stress and gripping to prevent the sandal from slipping off! • If your flip-flop bends in half, it’s not providing enough support! • Reserve the ultra-thin ones for the locker room or pool. Hygiene, hygiene, hygiene! Having sweaty feet is very common, however, the associated odour is usually unwelcome! This can be intensified for those still powering through the gym, rounds of golf and fitness sessions during the hotter months and so it is important to be more vigilant in preventing the build-up of bacteria and fungi! What are the health implications of sweaty feet? Sweaty feet can mean an increased risk of developing infections such as athlete’s foot and fungal nails. Dampness can also lead to maceration and blistering of the skin which can be painful and take time to heal. Those with health issues such as diabetes need to take extra special care as the risk of developing more serious infections becomes higher. THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT SWEATY FEET AND THE SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED, IS TO ADOPT GOOD FOOT HYGIENE HABITS AND FOLLOW THESE DOS AND DON’TS. Do wash feet daily and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes. Using a hair dryer is a good way to ensure between the toes and the nails are completely dry.

Do some heavy-duty moisturising! Your heels are prone to overuse and so they tend to dry out and crack more easily. The thicker skin around the heel means that it’s less penetrable and therefore a more intensive moisturiser is required. Our Margaret Dabbs Foot Lotion and Foot Oil (non-greasy and fast absorbing) are the perfect combination in providing intense nourishing and hydrating benefits. You will see instantly visible, long lasting results that repair very dry feet with thin and cracked skin. They are also excellent to alleviate tired feet and painful joints due to their anti-inflammatory properties! Do remove the hard skin from the soles of the feet with a Project Beauty pedicure. These areas become an ideal home for bacteria when they become soggy and damp and that’s why at Project Beauty we always file on dry skin! Do swab the feet with surgical spirit if you notice any odour. Bacterial infections are normally the cause of this but the smell can by neutralised with the use of rubbing spirit. Don’t be tempted to wear shoes without socks as the sweat from your feet goes straight into the fabric of the shoe ruining them, and drying out your skin at the same time. It may be trendy but cheat a little and wear trainer socks that can’t be seen – it is so much healthier. Don’t allow nails to become over-grown. Keep them short and clean and cut straight across to prevent fungal infections from developing. Don’t wear footwear made of synthetic materials as this will trap sweat and moisture. Also, try and swap shoes daily to give them a chance to air. Putting a little talcum powder in worn shoes can help absorb the extra moisture and keep the odours at bay! Last, but definitely not least, do invest in our bestselling which is a multi-tasking balm developed with active ingredients to combat the symptoms of athlete’s foot, relieve itchy, sore, dry, blistered skin and discoloured nails. Emu oil nourishes and promotes skin renewal and Tea Tree oil provides anti-fungal and anti-bacterial benefits!

WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCYI Watch out for the next First Aid course being conducted at UPANDRUNNING at Fit Lab here at the Club One of our members, John Ashcroft, recently became a local hero after saving a man’s life who had been choking. Fortunately John had done a course at Dubai Offshore Sailing Club and a life was saved! ‘Finding John’ was mentioned on the Dubai Eye hourly news the following day! Once ‘John’ was found, there was an interview with Tom Urquhart in the Dubai Eye studio with Survivor Peter and his wife thanking John, who by then was in the UK. Unaware of the ‘Looking for John’ campaign, he had flown into London the previous day for an evening with his daughter before continuing his journey on to Antigua for the Caribbean 600 sailing race! He was rather relieved to have been away from all the hype!

Visitor takes to radio to find passer-by who saved him from choking SURVIVOR TRACKS DOWN HIS MYSTERY SAVIOUR THROUGH A RADIO APPEAL Gulf News15 Feb 2019 BY ASHLEY HAMMOND Chief Reporter A South African visitor who choked on a piece of onion says he wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for the efforts of a passer-by, who dislodged the blockage by performing lifesaving CPR. Peter Greiner, 77, was with his wife Karin, 73, at Meadows Town Centre on February 10th to collect their grandchildren from school. Greiner, who lives an hour from Durban and was visiting his son in Dubai, bought a burger and choked on his first bite from an onion that wasn’t properly diced. The elderly couple, made their way to a nearby pharmacy to try to get help. By that time, he was unable to breathe and was turning blue. Dubai resident John Ashcroft, 71, from Godalming in UK, saw the incident and despite having not brushed up on his first-aid training, he stepped in to help the man. Ashcroft initially tried the Heimlich manoeuvre, which involves abdominal thrusts from behind with both arms clasped around the choker’s stomach, pulling tightly to force the obstruction up. However, this didn’t work and Greiner stopped breathing and collapsed on the floor, prompting Ashcroft to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Eventually, the onion came up and Peter regained consciousness. Soon afterwards, paramedics arrived and he was treated at the scene. By that time Ashcroft disappeared before anyone could thank him. Armed with only the hero’s first name, Greiner’s family launched an appeal to ‘Find John’ through the Facebook page ‘Mums in Dubai’. This got picked up by the Dubai Eye Radio Station, who were then messaged by Greiner’s son Adam. The couple was then able to reconnect and an emotional Greiner was able to thank Ashcroft live on

air on Wednesday, albeit via a phone call, as Ashcroft was by now in the Caribbean taking part in a yacht race. “Thank goodness for John because if it hadn’t been for him I wouldn’t be here talking to you,” Greiner told Gulf News on Thursday. “He had about 30 seconds to a minute left,” Ashcroft told Gulf News by phone, “He had stopped breathing and had gone blue, so I knew I had saved his life. “I had a busy evening ahead, however, so I didn’t stick around and I didn’t tell too many people about it besides my wife,” added Ashcroft, who was preparing to catch a flight ahead of his yacht race. Ashcroft’s wife Judy told their son Adam, however, and Adam’s wife Sophia, who didn’t know about the incident, heard the radio appeal. When the couple met, the penny dropped and Adam contacted the radio presenter leading the appeal Tom Urquhart, who just so happens to be his friend. “It was only until I was having breakfast with my wife the next day, that I realised Peter was probably doing the same, and if somebody hadn’t stepped in to help he probably wouldn’t be here,” added Ashcroft. The incident shines a light on the UAE’s new draft Good Samaritans Law, which absolves first aiders of legal consequences if

something goes wrong. “My case brings it all out in the open,” said Greiner, a former captain in the merchant navy. “I think the government here has done the right thing with the new law. More and more people should read this and do a first aid course; it only takes an hour but you could save someone’s life.” Ashcroft, a long-time Dubai resident and former businessman, agreed: “If I hadn’t stepped in and done something I would have felt absolutely mortified if something had happened to Peter, and I think others would want to avoid that situation.” Greiner’s wife Karin added: “John definitely needs an award because if it wasn’t for him Peter wouldn’t be here, he had turned as blue as my jeans and his eyes were closing.”

Rules By R

With the recent limelight being on the Faldo course during the OMEGA Dubai Moonlight Classic I have been asked on a few occasions what is the situation on hole 6, left side up near the green where the sand area becomes increasingly narrow. To allow for this, we introduced the following local rule in 2015. Additional Local Rule - Hole 6 Extension of Cart Path, Immovable Obstruction - Rule 16-1 The sand areas within the white spots and white stakes on the left hand side of hole 6, primarily nearer the green are now deemed as “an extension of the cart path” and relief is available under rule 16-1b. The player must lift the ball and drop it, without penalty, within one club length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief.

through towards the cart path as the backswing towards the barasti is irrelevant. Please Note: Objects defining Out of Bounds such as walls, fences, stakes or in this case the barasti, are not obstructions - they are deemed to be fixed and there is NO free relief provided under the rules of golf.

As we draw close to the end of yet another season, we, at F&B can honestly say that it was a very eventful and successful season once again, and this is, to a large extent, thanks to our wonderful members who support our outlets day by day. In return, we like to give back too, in the form we know best with some more great deals and promotions for everyone to enjoy. Despite all the new and latest promotions from Spike Bar, as mentioned in the previous issue, we have now also included two all-day deals which are perfect to beat the heat as the temperatures start rising.

This new Local Rule clarifies that a ball

You can now enjoy the legendary Spike burger and fries with a pint of Heineken for only AED 89!

lying on the sand area within the white spots and the white stakes that define this area (Pic 1) will be now be classed as part of the cart path; relief may be taken in the same way for a ball lying on an immovable obstruction, under rule 16-1b.

Reason for the Rule These two areas on the 6th hole of the Faldo course, where the sanded area in-between the cart path and the barasti fencing (Out Of Bounds) are so narrow, it becomes difficult to play a shot without having interference to either your stance or your swing by the cart path. In the diagram below we are focusing on the follow-

The correct procedure is to mark the ball, then simulate your stance and address position at a point that is not nearer the hole and then drop within one club length of that point. IMPORTANT: This nearest point MAY be on the green side of the path OR on a sanded area adjacent to your ball outside of the defined area with white stakes and white dots so it is whichever is deemed to be the nearest point of relief.

Our breakfast, lunch and dinner timing will remain the same during Ramadan with seasonal options that you can enjoy throughout the Holy Month, including special menus as well as Ramadan or Eid hampers. For enquiries, please contact us on 044179999 or visit www.dubaigolf.com/jones

Also, now that the famous Aperol Spritz is becoming more and more popular on a daily basis, we have decided to introduce an Aperol garden on Spike Terrace with some great new cocktails to choose FALDO FLOODLIGHTS… As we are focusing on the Faldo, please be reminded that since 1st April we have changed the local rule if your ball strikes a light pole. The NEW rule is: If a ball strikes a floodlight pole, the stroke MUST be cancelled and replayed without penalty. (Rule 14.6) If the ball is not immediately recoverable, another ball may be substituted. If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or email your query to rjames@dubaigolf.com

from and also a mouthwatering promotion – you get two Aperol Spritz cocktails and any pizza from Spike Bar menu for only AED 99 which is perfect for sharing …or being selfish! During the Holy Month of Ramadan, all our outlets will be operating on normal timings, so don’t miss out on all the sporting action and also the Champions League semi finals and the final on 1st of June. At Jones the Grocer look out for the Ramadan Special Menu, large cakes, Iftar dessert box, Iftar gourmet to go box as well as the Ramadan advent basket for gifts. At Jones we will still continue the Cheese & Wine nights but without the entertainment. For the Holy month of Ramadan, we have also erected our Dallah Lounge so everyone can experience an extraordinary Ramadan at Emirates Golf Club. This will be open daily from sunset until 3am; this dedicated Ramadan Tent offers a delicious Iftar buffet served daily.

Price: AED 150 inclusive of Iftar buffet with selected soft beverages. For every booking of 10 guests, two dine for free.

FROM THE KITCHEN OF CHEF NICHOLAS CUOMO THE FOOD OF RAMADAN

Ramadan is the 9th and holiest month of the Islamic calendar, when Muslims across the world fast during the hours of daylight.

Ramadan (also known as Ramazan, Ramzan, Ramadhan, or Ramathan) is the 9th and holiest month of the Islamic calendar, when Muslims across the world fast during the hours of daylight. After dusk Muslims break their fast with a meal called the iftar, often eaten with family members or with the local community at a mosque. Another smaller meal known as suhoor is eaten just before dawn.

only served during) Ramadan. Most contain plenty of complex carbohydrates, which release energy slowly, and are low in fats and sugar. Foods that hydrate and don’t take long to make (like soups) are common, while spicy dishes such as curries are avoided.

Because these meals need to provide enough sustenance throughout the entire day, many dishes are associated with (and sometimes

It’s important that the food for iftar looks the part, since before breaking their fast Muslims can only feast with their eyes. Despite what you might think, many Muslims actually eat more food during Ramadan than other times of the year. For example, in Egypt consumption of food rises by about 50% during the holy month.

Traditionally iftar begins with the consumption of dates, which are excellent sources of fibre, sugar and slow carbohydrates. Dates are also believed to be the food that the Islamic prophet Muhammed broke his fast with during Ramadan, along with camel milk and water. Iftar generally contains foods from all food groups; fruits and vegetables, grains, nuts, beans/meat and dairy. Hydrating vegetables and fluids are also commonly consumed. Some traditional meals for iftar include: • Mahshi (Egypt) – rice stuffed into eggplant, peppers, tomatoes and zucchini • Biryani (India) – a mixed rice dish made with spices, egg, meat and vegetables • Tabbouleh (Levant) – salad made of soaked bulgur, parsely, mint and tomatoes • Harira (Morocco) – a rich brown soup made of lentils, chickpeas, rice and meat stock • Maqluba (Palestine) – meat, rice, and fried vegetables placed in a pot, which is then flipped upside down • Mansaf (Jordan) – lamb cooked in yogurt, served over rice and garnished with almonds and pine nuts

Suhoor is a simpler affair than iftar but still needs to be wholesome to provide enough energy to last during the long hours of fasting. Protein-rich foods are preferred here, including eggs, meats and dairy. Foods such as oats which are slow to digest but high in fibre are also common. Some traditional meals for suhoor are: • Egg Brik (Tunisia) – whole egg in a triangular pastry pocket with chopped onion, tuna, harissa and parsley • Ful Ramadaan (Egypt) – a variation on Egypt’s national dish fūl or ful medames, a traditional bean stew made from cooked fava beans with olive oil, lemon juice and garlic • Aloo ki Bhujia (Pakistan) – made with spiced potatoes and eaten for suhoor during Ramadan Experience an extraordinary Ramadan at The Dallah Lounge, Emirates Golf Club. Open daily from sunset, the dedicated Ramadan Tent offers a delicious Iftar buffet served daily. The daily Iftar buffet offers a selection of traditional Arabic, Middle Eastern and international dishes. Reserve your table for 10 guests, and 2 will dine for free

The end of Ramadan is marked by a big celebration called Eid al-Fitr (also called “Id al-Fitr” or “Hari Raya”) the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast. Special food is cooked for the occasion, including a particular focus on sweets. Some traditional Eid foods include: • Ma’amoul (Levant) – shortbread pastries filled with dates, pistachios or walnuts • Laasida (Morocco) – buttered couscous served for breakfast • Seviyan (India) –vermicelli noodles made with milk and sugar and flavoured with cardamom • Kuih (Malaysia) – colourful bite-sized cakes made with butter, wheat, eggs and sugar • Kahk (Egypt) – cookies filled with honey, walnuts and pistachios Price AED 150 per person for buffet with seasonal mocktails and water AED 75 per child (5 to 12 years) Timings Iftar buffet Sunset to 9.30pm Shisha is available from 9pm
