hat an absolutely fabulous month we had in March with some of the major events in our social and golfing calendar, namely, Club Captain’s and Lady Captain’s golf days. Our first big event was our 30th Anniversary party on March 8th. What a spectacular evening it was and one of the best to date. I honestly don’t think anything could have been improved upon; the setting/lighting was fantastic and the whole club looked magnificent; the food was delicious..so much of every type of food that was all perfectly cooked and presented; the entertainment was so very good and the speeches too! Congratulations to everyone involved in making this all happen and especially to the F&B team.

30 years on and Emirates Golf Club still feels like a ‘second home’ to many of us and the Club is at its absolute peak - the courses are in great condition, the facilities are top-notch and the club now has superb outlets, all beautifully designed and fitted out, so it really is an absolute pleasure to spend so much time here! The club is, without a doubt, the best in the region. Our incoming Vice-Captains for 2018-2019 were announced on the evening of the party. Congratulations to Ishu Rupani and Yana Jamieson, two very popular choices! The next event was Ivan’s Captain’s Day which was on Friday 16th March which saw a full field of of players take to the Majlis course for a betterball competition and 40 ladies playing on the Faldo course. Everyone had so much fun and we were treated to some extraordinary food tastings brought to each group by Chef Tomasz and his assistant who were flown in from Slovenia especially for the weekend…mini-rolls containing foie gras and also egg shells filled with potato, foamed egg and topped with freshly grated truffle. I am not doing this justice with the description but, believe me, it was all delicious. As well as this there were food stations at the 4th and 12th of the Majlis as well as numerous drinks stations. The main bar however was Ivan’s ‘Ice-Bar’ at the 12th which was one of his own company’s refrigerated trucks containing a bar and two benches sculpted out of ice; this was amazing…and very, very cold!! The evening continued with a superb array of food including special Slovenian dishes and drinks, a band and even a magician. Thank you Ivan for everything…the F&B, shirts, pouches, and chocolates (for the ladies)! Three days later was Najla’s Captain’s Day which was another brilliant afternoon and evening. Again we were treated to some excellent oncourse food and beverages and as we moved into the evening event, there were plenty of treats in store. Thanks to Chef Nicholas and the entire F&B team for the delicious Lebanese fare. Traditionally the Lady Vice-Captain puts together a skit for the Lady Captain which was wonderfully done by Sulafa with the help of a number of the ladies. In addition, Sulafa had arranged a ‘flashmob’ later on in the evening which was fantastic. I know she worked tirelessly on this along many of the ladies as well as Paul Byrne, Rhys, Cian, Will, Sean and Patrick, who attended many practice spring sessions. Well you pulled it off and it worked …the look of surprise on Najla’s face was priceless!

he Indian Invitational yet gain produced a full field and a big thank you to the Indian Community for hosting such a fabulous event and raising funds for the junior colleagues. A specific mention and thank you to Surender, Vipen, Rekha and Jayshree for your support and leadership of the event. Captains’ Days - Ladies Show How to Party! The run of high profile events continued in midMarch with Ivan hosting his Captain’s Day on Friday 16th and Najla hosting the ladies three days later on Monday 19th. Both Ivan and Najla hosted superb events with considerable time, effort and finance spent on the planning and hosting of their respective days. Thank you to all the members who participated, 120 men and 40 ladies competed in Ivan’s day with over 100 ladies celebrating with Najla on the Monday. I saw first hand the effort that was injected into each day but there was one stark contrast between the evening celebrations. The ladies celebrated late into the night of Monday 19th March; in contrast, it was noticeable that at approximately 9:15pm, half the guests had left the celebrations early on the Friday. I appreciate that we all have social commitments in Dubai and any outdoor events have to be pushed into an eight to nine month period but I would encourage all members to check the tournament calendar when it comes out in August and block your diary seven months in advance so that, if possible, you can avoid double-booking social events (especially Captain’s Day) on the same night. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed as both events are fabulous evenings of entertainment.. well done to Ivan and Najla! Colleague Update Unfortunately there is some good and bad news in terms of the management and professional team at the club. I am sad to inform you that Craig Haldane, Director of Golf Course Maintenance, will be leaving Dubai Golf at the end of April. Craig has been offered a fabulous opportunity at Gleneagles, in Scotland, the host of the 2014 Ryder Cup. Craig joined Dubai Golf in 2006 from Bahrain and spent his first years at Nad Al Sheba before moving across to Emirates Golf Club and then taking on a Director’s role overseeing Dubai Creek in addition to Emirates Golf Club. Craig will be missed and it has been a pleasure to work with him. He always put the needs of the membership first and his open communication with Golf Operations and the membership is one of the main reasons for his success together with the quality of playing surfaces produced.

We wish Craig, Aneisha, Haydn and Zara well in their new Scottish adventure! I am sure Craig will be thankful of any ‘cooler climate’ advice, having previously worked in South Africa, Bahrain and the UAE! A further announcement will follow in terms of replacement and any relevant structural changes but, rest assured, the playing surfaces will remain at the level expected. On a more positive note we welcome back a familiar face to the Peter Cowen Academy as James Williams returned as a teaching Professional from 1st April. James will bring great experience, knowledge and passion to the club in his role as Golf Professional and he joins a highly successful team at a very exciting time in our development. We are soon to move the Academy to the Majlis range in a more central position in the operation, as the construction of Topgolf will begin this summer on the Faldo range site. James was the first Director of Golf at Emirates Golf Club back in 1988 and he has taught many of our current members, in more recent years at Jebel Ali. He is delighted to be back as part of the team at his ‘second home’. carine Update carine will operate seven days a week. Opening hours are as follows: Lunch: 12:00 to 15:00 (Thursday to Saturday) Dinner: 19:00 to 22:30 (Daily) Breakfast and further lunch timings will be introduced and members will be informed when these are added. Dress code Breakfast and lunch: Dress code is casual. Open shoes, baseball caps are tolerated; however beachwear is not allowed. Dinner: Dress code is smart casual. Emirates Speed Golf Challenge

s part of Emirates Golf Club’s 30th Anniversary cerebrations the club took on the challenge of playing the quickest round of golf in history over the Majlis course. With the current record, according to Guinness World Records, standing at 13 minutes and 42 seconds, the team had their work cut out. The strategy to get around the course in the quickest time possible was to have our golf professionals hit tee shots and approach shots into each hole, leaving the putting and chipping to members. Beginning a little after 11.00am the opening tee shot was hit by Head Golf Professional Stephen Deane, and the challenge was under way. With everyone moving in perfect synchronisation the challenge began with ease, and the front 9 was quickly completed in a mere 39 strokes, with some very good golf being played under severe time constraints. It continued in the same fashion into the back nine, even with the odd birdie being made. A little after 11.20am, the challenge was complete. With a team of 30 players, a round of golf over the Majlis course was completed in 21 minutes 39 seconds, in 83 strokes. Not quite the Guinness World Record that was hoped for, but a UAE record was settled for! Congratulations to all participants for their fantastic effort!

he members’ party on 8th March was great, playing golf in the afternoon followed by a wonderful party. Just before the afternoon shotgun, we had our first trial of ‘speed golf’ on the Majlis course when a team of our Pros and members finished 18 holes in just under 22 minutes. Celebrating 30 years of Emirates Golf Club was a big event. I am sure you all enjoyed it as much as I did. The next day was the Indian Invitational which was again played on both courses. All our colleagues at the club did a fantastic job as they had just two to three hours to clear and clean everything from the party the previous night - some of us stayed until early morning - and the club and the courses were back to normal operations again. The following week, on Friday 16th March, was my Captain’s Day. With my drive just three yards longer than my Season Opener drive-in, there was not much improvement. I hope you all enjoyed the day though as I tried to put some Slovenian flavour to it. Let me say again, thanks for coming and for all your support. Congratulations to all winners. The Talker Cup (Europe v North America) took place on 23rd March which was another exhausting, full day and evening, but really enjoyable. I was invited to

play for Team North America (yes, I am Slovenian!!). It was won by Team Europe but it was very close. It’s always a great event in the season’s calendar. Congratulations to all winners of the March tournaments. Don’t forget that we have the Monthly Medal at the end of the month as well as the Easter Scramble. See you at the club for those events. I am introducing ‘The Major Championship Trophy’ on 8th April, the final day of the US Masters which will be a competition between 36 Professionals living in Dubai and 36 Emirates Golf Club members. The details of this event are in this issue. The Masters is always special, but with Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy playing well lately, it will be even more exciting. Of course, we should be hoping for a win by Haotong Li who will be trying to make it third time in a row for a Desert Classic winner to win the US Masters in the same year. Good luck Li. I would like to wish you a lot of enjoyable golf during April; hopefully the weather will continue to stay as it is now making it a great time of the year to play golf in Dubai. MEN’S COMPETITION RESULTS MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

ongratulations to Arkesh Bhatia on becoming the Men’s Club Champion. With two days of competition over both the Faldo and the Majlis courses, Arkesh scored rounds of 68 and 76 to post a clubhouse target of 144 which was matched by Mike Mezei in an incredibly exciting finish! Both players were tied coming down the final hole, the par 5 18th, and after popping a wedge shot close and holing the putt, Arkesh found himself in the lead by one stroke. However Mike, the experienced competitor that he is, found himself with a long-distance, two-putt birdie attempt to tie the game. Subsequently, Mike carded scores of 71 & 73 to match Arkesh’s total of 144 to take things to a sudden death play-off which was on hole 17. Arkesh pipped Mike to the prize by making an impressive birdie as Mike carded a par. Finishing in third place over the two days was defending Club Champion, Sanjay Dhandsa who produced two very consistent scores of 76 for a total of 152, eight shots back from the leaders.

In A Division (0-12 handicaps) it was Rakesh Shah who claimed the winner’s prize by narrowly beating Rajinder Razdan. Rakesh scored net scores of 74 & 71 making a total of 145, narrowly beating second place Rajinder who scored a total of 146 net (70 & 76).

March is over and it was really busy at the club.

Toby Waite secured top spot in B Division (13-24 handicaps) with net scores of 82 & 72 for a total of 152. It was quite a convincing victory for young Toby, claiming a six-shot victory within the division over Sudhir Vora, who scored 82 & 86 to post a total of 158. There were also daily prizes with best gross and best net prizes for each day on offer. On day one, it was Tejan Fadlu-Deen who won best gross, scoring 77 on the Faldo course. Winning the net prize on the Faldo was Jon Vail. Day 2 saw Connor Forbes fire a wonderful 74 gross on the Majlis to claim best gross on the day with Eric Koeman winning the day’s net prize with a score of 70.

he concept behind this event came from one of our young up and coming Academy students, Aaron Leitmannstetter.

We had just played the grand final of our popular Members’ Pro-Am Series in May last year. Whilst sitting with the then ViceCaptain Ivan, Peter Jamieson and Aaron, the discussion turned to ideas for Ivan’s Captain’s year and how much the members enjoyed playing with the Professionals. Aaron quickly picked up on this and suggested there should be in event in which members play against the Professionals! This idea quickly created a spark in the conversation and a Members v Professionals match was born!

We realised it would be difficult to have 36 Professionals in town to play so the inclusion of the Club’s scratch league team worked perfectly. We also wanted to create a theme around the event and, with a couple of Omega Dubai Desert Classic champions going on to win the Masters, it made sense to host it on Masters Sunday each year! As you know the Masters Champion, as well as receiving the green jacket, also receives a beautiful silver-plated Augusta National Clubhouse replica trophy. Ivan was extremely keen to do the same and the wonderful Major Championship Trophy was created.

riday 16th March 2018 saw the members of Emirates Golf Club come together to celebrate Ivan Fornazaric’s Captain’s Day which saw golfers take to both the Majlis and the Faldo to play a pairs stableford format. With the men playing the Majlis, it was the pairing of Ishu Rupani and Anand Lakhiani who finished on top by a convincing three points with a total of 45 which was a great effort. Finishing in second place with a points total of 42, was the partnership of Rajinder Razdan and Dileep Kumar. Finally, squeezing their way into third place was Tej Chhabra and Ghanshyam Manghnani with 41 points, earning third by virtue of a better back nine score. The ladies also took part in the proceedings on the Faldo course playing the same format. The winners were Mitsuko Emmerson and Ingrid Lind who proved too hard to beat, scoring 42 points followed by Josie Tracey and Nancy Wingate with 39 points. The ladies also had on-course special events with two nearest the pins on offer. Collecting the prizes were Fiona Berry (hole #2) and Viv Caley (hole #12). The on-course winners for the men were Anand Lakhiani (hole #4), Gurinderjit Singh (hole #7), Mickey Chopra (hole #11) and Tej Chhabra (hole #15). The last of the on-course prizes was one of the more unique special events the Majlis has ever seen, with a ‘Hit-the-Truck’ challenge on the 14th hole, courtesy of GORICA. With the truck being parked 200 yards away, it was Vipen Sethi who won this prize of accuracy! A fantastic and memorable prize-giving dinner presentation was staged that evening on the Clubhouse Terrace hosted by our Captain Ivan.

We ladies started the month playing best front 9, best back 9 and best overall golf competition followed by a photo shoot for our ladies’ section cookery book which is now on sale and copies are going fast. We then played our Medal after which, a few of us departed for a three-day golf staycation in Abu Dhabi where we played Saadiyat, Yas and Abu Dhabi National. We just had time to come back and participate in Ivan’s Captain’s Day event on 16th March; what a life! Although we were not playing in the main competition, Captain Ivan spoiled us with giveaways and treated us to a lavish dinner that was prepared by a Slovenian chef who was specially flown in. I must say that the Ice Bar at the 12th tee, which was brought in especially for the day too, was incredible and a first for our club. Well done to Ivan who organised a memorable and amazing Captain’s Day!

LADIES’ COMPETITION RESULTS

arch was another busy month at our club! What a fantastic 30th anniversary party we had! The organisation was phenomenal, down to the last little detail. We all had a blast and the next morning when we came back for the Indian Invitational competition, all was back in its place as if the party had never taken place. What an amazing job by our colleagues who worked tirelessly overnight to make it happen! The events on that day started with Emirates Golf Club Speed Golf Challenge, which saw us racing around the Majlis course together with our Pros to try to play the quickest round of golf which we concluded in just under 22 minutes! What a great achievement it was and so much fun too. Adrenaline was still pumping as we started our 30th anniversary competition right after! That same weekend we participated in three golf tournaments, the 30th Anniversary, the Indian Invitational and our Ladies Amateur open. Phew!

With seven ladies having more than 40 points it was Kiyono who finished on top, beating Hilary Wynter who scored 45 points. The party atmosphere continued with my Lady Captain’s Day which took place the following Monday! I was pleasantly surprised when I reached the club to see a unique display of retro golf fashion worn by our ladies who went to so much effort to dress up so elegantly! The day went by like a dream as we were treated from the first tee by Steen and the F&B with a special cocktail and then with succulent Lebanese food on the course.

Thank you all for making me feel so special and for going to so much effort and hard work to produce such an amazing show! Also a huge thanks to Nova, Nancy and Barbara who flew in to be with me during this special occasion! I hardly had time to get over my Captain’s Day before we were off to Yas to play in the last fixture, before the final of our Inter-Club competitions! Not only did we make it to the final but we also beat Yas on their home turf and came first! I couldn’t be any prouder of our team! Well done to all the ladies who participated from the start of the season; this is a culmination of all our efforts put together!

EMIRATES LADIES’ AMATEUR OPEN Saturday 10th March

ongratulations to Kate Bibby (The Els Club) on her triumphant win in the Emirates Ladies Amateur Open. Played over the Majlis course, Kate shot a very impressive 73 gross to take the trophy by virtue of a fourshot win with Natalii Gupta (Emirates Golf Club) scoring 77 to secure second place. With the early section of the field finding it tough with the strong winds, it was an intense finish with the winners coming from the closing groups. Completing the gross prizes was Chantal El-Chaib (Abu Dhabi Golf Club) who fired a gross 78 to finish in third place.

LADY CAPTAIN’S CHARITY DAY

onday 26th March saw the ladies take to the Majlis course for this year’s Lady Captain’s Charity Day. The aim of the day was to try to raise as much money as possible for the Lady Captain’s chosen charity, and in excess of AED 20,000 was raised on the day. The format was a Texas Scramble which was very well contested with 15 teams taking part. Finishing on top of the leaderboard was the team of Christiane Sprunck, Yana Jamieson, Mitsuko Emmerson and Anne Gely Bougie with a fantastic score of 61.6. Finishing in second place was Najla Bartette, Maura Duggan, Naima Maya and Martha Wong with a score of 63.2. Third place was won by the team of Fiona Munro, Katrine Karlsson, Jane Vail and Sandra Chia with a score of 63.8. The best guest team prize was won by the team of Eunjung Kim, Esther Kim, Heejin Na and Y.S. Yang with a score of 66.7. There were also special event prizes for each division - two nearest the pins won by Rekha Bandopadhyay (hole #7) and Eunshim Heo (hole #11). Winning the longest drives were Sandra Chia (hole #3) and Naima Maya (hole #12).

MIXED COMPETITION RESULTS

26th Indian Invitational Golf Day F riday 9th March saw the return of the ever popular annual Indian Invitational Golf Day, which is supported by the Indian members of Emirates Golf Club. In its 26th edition, the tournament was played by 184 players over both courses, the format being the best two scores from teams of four in both a stableford and shamble format, played over the Majlis and the Faldo courses. With each team playing on both courses, the draw was split into two groups, A and B. Congratulations to the overall winning team of Sanjay Raina, Saransh Raina, Valdemar and Viktor Kofod-Olsen on their fantastic winning score of 97 points. In second place was the team of Mitsuko Emmerson, Anvita Kapoor, Dileep Kumar and Tauseef Khan with a final total of 94 points. Finishing in third place was Manmeet Bedi, Jay Pangarkar, Ashok Kumar and Mukesh Kochhar with a fine total of 92 points. In the group section, the winners of Group A were Jugwinder Brar, Rajest Sethi, Rajesh

Verma and Fadi Mehio with a score of 88 points. Winning Group B was the team of Amithab Swarup, Sandeep Saighal, Suresh Shewakramani and Arjun Khanna with a total of 91 points, winning by a virtue of a better back 9 score.

During the evening, there were also prizes for blind partners which were drawn after all scorecards were collected. The winners, with a combined score of 173 points, were Ingrid Lind, Christine Baltussen, Anand Lakhiani, Nelly Amarnani, Mohit Khatwani, P.T Jain, Gurmukh Ghuldu and Thabang Tawrima. Finishing in second place in the Blind Partners draw, with a total of 169 points, was the team of Tim and Fiona Berry, Akash Kumar, Anand Kapoor, Nishith and Mahesh Patel, Aditya Judge and Ashish Nanda. The prizes did not stop there as each course had special events on offer for both groups of players. With two nearest the pin prizes on both courses, it was Anthony Dols (Majlis #4), P.T Jain (Majlis #15), Rajinder Razdan

The final special event prizes, for the longest drives on each course, were claimed by Saransh Raina (Majlis #3) and Veronique Rossett (Faldo #5). Awarding the prizes were Emirates Golf Club Men’s Captain Ivan Fornazaric, Lady Captain Najla Bartette, Surender Singh Kandhari and Ambassador of India to the UAE, H.E. Mr. Navdeep Suri. By tradition, the organisers of the tournament Surender Kandhari, Vipen Sethi and Rekha Bandopadhyay presented AED 26,000 cash to Barney Coleman and Nishanti Balasuriya towards the Junior Staff Fund which was money collected from raffle tickets sold on the day.

here is no denying that I am very excited and really looking forward to returning to work at Emirates Golf Club, a place that personally holds so many fond memories...being Head Professional and part of the small team that opened the first grass golf course in the Middle East in 1988, involvement in the inaugural Desert Classic and the many other high profile tournaments, events and developments at the club. However, having opened Jebel Ali Golf Resort and having thoroughly enjoyed working there for many years I am very grateful for being provided the wonderful opportunity to return to Emirates Golf Club working alongside a great team and doing what I love most - interacting and assisting members and visiting guests to enjoy the time they spend at the club, whether that be through my teaching or any in any other way I can, as we all know ultimately that it’s the people who make a golf club. I have stayed in touch with the club while I have been away and I have seen and have remained in contact with many of the longer term members so I look forward to rekindling old friendships and of course, making new friends with members who I have not met before. I have found my old golf clubs, dusted them down and I hope to see if I can still play a half decent game after playing very infrequently over the last few years; more importantly though, I am looking forward to being able to help you to improve your scores and your enjoyment of this wonderful game. After the recently staged Ladies’ and Men’s Club Championships, Friday 23rd March saw the juniors take to the course to play in our Junior Club Championship. Playing traditional stroke play over a testing Majlis course, the stage was set for an exciting tournament!

TRACKMAN NUMBERS AND DISTANCE OFF THE TEE

e are all aware of the current controversy regarding the distance Tour Professionals are hitting the ball, especially with the driver. Yes they are strong with technically sound mechanics but it’s their numbers at impact that tell the story. In the last month or two, the club has been very busy with members’ events and the Academy has conducted several trackman long drive competitions throughout the day. The numbers we are seeing in general were mostly negative AoA (Angle of Attack) and why so many players are restricted in distance with the driver. As we position the ball towards our front leg with the driver, this opens the shoulders and stacks the weight forward leading to a down and left (right hand player) swing. These impact factors create low launch, high spin and usually a slice; even with fast club head speeds of 100mph the ball will not travel as far as one would like. You will see above, both Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy have a positive angle of attack, and Rory’s swing path is plus 4.4 to the right. So how do we achieve this? Follow these three steps below to improve your AoA for greater distance.

Congratulations to our new Girls’ Champions Hyeonji Kang, who won in style scoring a very impressive 74 gross over the Majlis course. In the boys’ section, it was Bradley Mogire who successfully defended his title by finishing on top by one stroke. Continuing the good scoring over the Majlis was our runner-up in the gross section, the winner of last year’s Girls’ section, Natalii Gupta with a fine score of 77. Finishing in third place with a score of 78 and the better back 9, was Kabir Nanda. In the net section, winning the Girls’ Division with a fantastic net 67 was Fatima Zafar Rizvi. he courses were prepared for both the Men’s and the Ladies’ Club Championships last month which both proved to be exciting events this year!

The Faldo has really presented well this season with the greens performing particularly well. You will notice that we are currently digging down trenches at certain greens, on the perimeters in particular. With USGA specification greens, the subsurface drainage is very important and we are simply exposing the outlet pipes to ensure that the system is working properly. You may ask, “Why do they need drainage in this part of the world with no rain?” Well, the irrigation water we apply needs to evenly distribute across and down through the surface. With the quality water we use on a daily basis it is therefore also important that unwanted elements are flushed through and away. If not, these will subside in the subgrade and translocate back up

into the root system causing us issues, such as sodium and bicarbonates. So, forgive the team as they systematically go through and check the functionality of the system which is just part of a very important process of our maintenance regimes throughout the year. March suddenly warmed up didn’t it? Aneisha and I were married 10 years ago on April 4th and we held our reception on the terrace at the club around 2pm. I am not sure if this would be possible in this heat 10 years later. The climate has, without question, shifted and this affects the timing of certain practices on the golf course as well. We have already started to do some deep tine aeration in the roughs on the Majlis to start waking up the Bermuda in anticipation for an early transition this season. The Ryegrass is hanging in there but if these temperatures continue to soar, it won’t be long until the Rye is under too much strain and starts to wither away. Our summer maintenance plans are in place and behind the scenes my team of mechanics are ensuring that the equipment is set and ready to go. A lot of preventative maintenance is done in

our workshops, led by our Fleet Manager, Donal Mulvey who has been with us since January 2017 and he has certainly been a great asset to our department. He oversees all of our turf maintenance equipment as well as all of the EZGO fleet vehicles. We maintain all of our equipment in-house so with his team of nine dedicated colleagues, he keeps very busy throughout the year indeed. Donal has really settled in well and I am sure you will see him in and around the club so don’t be shy to say hello the next time you bump into him. Take advantage of the coming weeks before the weather really kicks on. The courses are playing well and we are at the peak of the season in terms of how busy the property is and how the turf is performing. Golf’s Modernised Rules Released • Pace-of-play support: Reduced time for searching for a lost ball (from five minutes to three); affirmative encouragement of “ready golf” in stroke play; recommending that players take no more than 40 seconds to play a stroke and other changes intended to help with pace of play.

he R&A and the USGA finalised golf’s new Rules this month after an extensive review that included a request for feedback from the global golf community on the proposed changes. Golfers can now access the official 2019 Rules of Golf by visiting RandA.org or http://www.usga.org/rules The process to modernise the Rules began in 2012 and was initiated to ensure that the Rules are easier to understand and apply for all golfers and to make the game more attractive and accessible for newcomers. While the majority of proposed Rules remain intact in the final version, several important changes to the initial proposals and further clarification of many Rules were incorporated. The most significant adjustments made following review of the feedback received from golfers around the world include: • Dropping procedure: When taking relief (from an abnormal course condition or penalty area, for example), golfers will now drop from knee height. This will ensure consistency and simplicity in the dropping process while also preserving the randomness of the drop. (Key change: the proposed Rules released in 2017 suggested dropping from any height). • Measuring in taking relief: The golfer’s relief area will be measured by using the longest club in his/her bag (other than a putter) to measure one club-length or two club-lengths, depending on the situation, providing a consistent process for golfers to establish his/her relief area. (Key change: the proposed Rules released in 2017 suggested a 20-inch or 80-inch standard measurement). • Removing the penalty for a double hit: The penalty stroke for accidentally striking the ball more than once in the course of a stroke has been removed. Golfers will simply count the one stroke they made to strike the ball. (Key change: the proposed Rules released in 2017 included the existing one-stroke penalty). • Balls Lost or Out of Bounds: Alternative to Stroke and Distance: A new Local Rule will now be available in January 2019, permitting committees to allow golfers the option to drop the ball in the vicinity of where the ball is lost or out of bounds (including the nearest fairway area), under a two-stroke penalty. It addresses concerns raised at the club level about the negative impact on pace of play when a player is required to go back under stroke and distance. The Local Rule is not intended for higher levels of play, such as professional or elite level competitions. (Key change: this is a new addition to support pace of play) David Rickman, Executive Director – Governance at The R&A, said, “We are pleased to be introducing the new Rules of Golf after a collaborative and wide-ranging review process which has embraced the iviews of golfers, rules experts and administrators worldwide. We believe that the new Rules are more in tune

Presented in digital, text-based form today, the new Rules will also now be translated into more than 30 languages and readied for final delivery via print and digital formats, including searchable Rules of Golf official apps developed by The R&A and the USGA. with what golfers would like and are easier to understand and apply for everyone who enjoys playing this great game.” “We’re thankful for the golfers, administrators and everyone in the game who took the time to provide us with great insight and thoughtful feedback,” said USGA Senior Director of Rules & Amateur Status, Thomas Pagel. “We couldn’t be more excited to introduce the new Rules ahead of their education and implementation.” Major proposals introduced in 2017 that have been incorporated into the modernised Rules include: • Elimination or reduction of “ball moved” penalties: There will be no penalty for accidentally moving a ball on the putting green or in searching for a ball; and a player is not responsible for causing a ball to move unless it is “virtually certain” that he or she did so. • Relaxed putting green rules: There will be no penalty if a ball played from the putting green hits an unattended flagstick in the hole; players may putt without having the flagstick attended or removed. Players may repair spike marks and other damage made by shoes, animal damage and other damage on the putting green and there is no penalty for merely touching the line of putt. • Relaxed rules for “penalty areas” (currently called “water hazards”): Red and yellowmarked penalty areas may cover areas of desert, jungle, lava rock, etc., in addition to areas of water; expanded use of red penalty areas where lateral relief is allowed; and there will be no penalty for moving loose impediments or touching the ground or water in a penalty area. • Relaxed bunker rules: There will be no penalty for moving loose impediments in a bunker or for generally touching the sand with a hand or club. A limited set of restrictions (such as not grounding the club right next to the ball) is kept to preserve the challenge of playing from the sand; however, an extra relief option is added for an unplayable ball in a bunker, allowing the ball to be played from outside the bunker with a two-stroke penalty. • Relying on player integrity: A player’s “reasonable judgment” when estimating or measuring a spot, point, line, area or distance will be upheld, even if video evidence later shows it to be wrong; and elimination of announcement procedures when lifting a ball to identify it or to see if it is damaged.

Three important publications, to be distributed in September, will help players as well as officials and provide interpretation and guidance in how the Rules are applied: • The Player’s Edition of the Rules of Golf: An abridged, user-friendly set of the Rules with shorter sentences, commonly used phrases, and diagrams. Written in the “second person,” The Player’s Edition is intended to be the primary publication for golfers. • The Rules of Golf: The full edition of the Rules will be written in the third person and include illustrations. It is intended to be a more thorough version of the revised Rules. • The Official Guide to the Rules of Golf: This “guidebook” replaces the Decisions book and will contain information to best support committees and officials. It includes interpretations on the Rules, committee procedures (available local rules and information on establishing the terms of the competition), and the Modified Rules of Golf for Players with Disabilities. It is a comprehensive resource document intended as a supplementary publication.

• Mark your calendar: tick the calendar on the days you go to the gym which benefits by showing how long it has been since you were last there. Keeping a steady number of ticks on your calendar is an easy way to motivate yourself. • Work out with a partner: the benefit of this is that you improve by pushing and encouraging each other. In addition, if you know that your partner is expecting you at the gym, it will certainly push you to turn up

• Timing is important: don’t put exercise time in a place where it will easily be pushed aside by something more important. First thing in the morning, before or straight after work are often times to consider.

TALKER CUP was very proud to have been Captain of Team North America for the 2018 Talker Cup. For anyone unfamiliar with this event, the Talker Cup and TriNations are tournaments that have taken place on an annual basis for almost as long as Emirates Club has existed. Despite narrowly losing, I am very proud of my team who gave it their best after having dug ourselves into a big hole. The great sportsmanship and spirit in which everyone played on both teams was by far the most rewarding thing to witness and truly reflects what the game is all about. Well done to Ian Scott, the Captain of the Europeans and his team for managing to hang on with some truly awesome golf. Chris Gould who is the

next Captain for Team North America and his Vice-Captain Mike Mezei are already plotting their revenge. The question is, can the European Captain Gary Black and his Vice-Captain Joe Smith rise to the occasion and defend the title? To me, this is without a doubt, one of the best events of the season. Although it is organised within our own group of friends, the club supports it whole heartedly as they have for other Annual Tournaments held at the club. I would like to acknowledge everyone involved including Nishanthi, Rhys, Cian, Will, Sean and Patrick and a special thanks also to all our colleagues on the range and the marshals for decorating the carts and for keeping everyone moving after a twohour fog delay.

he Talker Cup was started in May 1988 by Richard Chiarantona and, since then, it has gone from strength to strength. There were two events in 1988 so this year was the 32nd one. Well done to both teams for what was a great event played in true Talker Cup spirit with Europe retaining the trophy this year.

Any great golf event is not a success without gathering together after the event to share in some of those memorable moments that took place over two rounds. The Master of Ceremonies was Mike Tracey and, as always, he excelled in keeping everyone entertained. The F&B was exceptional so huge thanks to Chef Nicholas and his team, especially Miles who closely watched over the live cooking stations. Everything was superb! Congratulations Team Europe for winning the Talker Cup against Team North America

What a day!!! irstly the fog delay brought back memories of last year and I just hoped play would go ahead and we would be able to play a full 18 holes morning and afternoon.

There were the highs of being 4-0 up in the morning and 8-4 up in the afternoon but then the anxious moments of being pulled back to 4-4 in the morning and 8-7 in the afternoon. The result clearly shows that the teams were evenly matched and it really could have gone either way. David Formas was a great opposing Captain. We agreed on everything in the run-up to the day and I’d like to thank David for making the whole build-up pleasant and enjoyable. Every match was played in the spirit of the game of golf and also of the Talker Cup and is a testament to a truly great team event. The article which Jacqui Barry wrote in the November 2017 issue of Club Life on the

sad passing of Paul Thornberry after his battle with cancer struck a chord with me. He was a former Captain and European Talker Cup stalwart and, in my capacity as Talker Cup Captain this year, I wanted to do something to help others who are fighting the same battle. Due to the generosity of the sponsors Alistair Mcmillan of Brewer Smith & Brewer Group and Scott Macpherson of Keltic Golf, none of the team had to contribute to the cost of kit this year. I therefore asked if each member would give a donation towards Cancer Research and to highlight what we were doing I dressed the guys in pink shirts, just as the Tour players do on Pink Friday of the Dubai Desert Classic. Everyone enthusiastically contributed and we raised AED 4,800 on the day. Nobody can force anyone to give charitable donations but hopefully future Captains of the Talker Cup, on both sides of the pond, will try to do something similar, possibly for the charities of their choice.

I’m sure everyone would be on board with the idea. What a fantastic day, all made possible by the players, Ummer, marshals, F&B colleagues for the absolutely fantastic food...I think the best we have ever had for a Talker Cup event...the superb service, the MC’ing by Mike Tracey (second to none and so much effort put in) and for all players and partners who came for dinner. Win or lose, we all manage to have a great time at the apres-golf event. Here’s to next year and continuing this fantastic event - who would want to miss it? Best wishes to next year’s Captains, Chris Gould (North America) and Gary Black (Europe).
