hat a superb weekend of golf at the Ryder Cup. I won’t go into detail as I am sure that almost everyone would have been glued to the television watching the whole event. It was also a great result for Europe, a superb venue and course, (though it looked incredibly tight and difficult) and…what an atmosphere!! I was in Paris at the Ryder Cup each day which was quite an experience. I know that people say there is more to see on the television but to be there and witness the brilliant atmosphere was amazing. Furthermore, the course set-up was such that viewing was really good with the shape of the course and the steep slopes around each hole affording spectators really good views of the holes and the players! Well done to Europe Captain, Thomas Bjorn, his Vice-Captains and the entire team but commiserations to Jim Furyk and Team USA.

Our season at Emirates Golf Club is well underway with the Ladies’ Season Opener having been played today and the Mixed Season Opener due to be played on 12th October. Medals, Members’ Pro-Ams, Scrambles, Opens etc are all on the cards for the coming months. Please check the Member Zone on www.dubaigolf.com to keep up to date with everything that is happening here at the Club. Our Club website has been revamped and is much more user-friendly and full of useful information. The Majlis course will soon be walking only (from 2nd November until 6th February) by which time the temperature will have dropped and the humidity levels will be low so it will be perfect walking weather on our superb Majlis course. Don’t forget to make use of Emirates Golf Club’s caddies; not only is it great to have the luxury of a caddie at a very reasonable price, but it also means our colleagues earn a bit of extra money on their days off. Caddies are usually in great demand so be sure to book early through Golf Operations Supervisor Ummer or through Jega. We recently had the announcement of the addition of Jumeirah Golf Estates to Dubai Golf’s management portfolio, totaling five courses. In addition, there are a number of benefits to Emirates Golf Club members so please check out the article in this issue. Enjoy all the forthcoming events at the Club, both golfing and social.

Dubai Golf Announces Management Deal of Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Golf Operation, Leisure Facilities and Dining Outlets

D

ubai Golf has signed a long-term management deal with Jumeirah Golf Estates (JGE), the world-class residential golf destination, to manage JGE’s Clubhouse with its leisure facilities, and all dining outlets, along with the two championship golf courses, Fire and Earth. The new agreement, effective 1st October 2018, means that Dubai Golf now offers five championship courses for residents and overseas visitors to enjoy across its portfolio, which includes Emirates Golf Club and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, both of which celebrated significant anniversaries this year – 30 years and 25 years, respectively. Yousuf Kazim, CEO of Jumeirah Golf Estates says: “We are all eagerly anticipating the opportunity to work with Dubai Golf who have a long-established history within the region. It is an exciting time for Jumeirah Golf Estates as we look forward to welcoming a significant number of golf players to the Earth course in November for the DP World Tour Championship from 15th-18th November,

as the Race to Dubai celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.” He added: “Jumeirah Golf Estates continues to be one of the world’s premier golfing destinations, and we aim to set an unrivalled level of customer service to our members, residents and guests. By partnering with industry leaders such as Dubai Golf, we are able to enhance the experience of our Clubhouse members and provide the highest quality and service to our residents and members.” Christopher May, CEO of Dubai Golf, added: “We are proud to announce the addition of Jumeirah Golf Estates Clubhouse and Golf courses to the Dubai Golf management portfolio. The prestigious club will sit alongside the magnificent Emirates Golf Club – which is home to the annual Omega Dubai Desert Classic – as well as the renowned Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. We approach this exciting relationship with optimism and extreme enthusiasm, and will continue striving towards delivering the very best golf and leisure experiences for our members.”

Home to the annual DP World Tour Championship, which is the culminating event of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai, Jumeirah Golf Estates Golf courses are comprised of both the Greg Normandesigned Earth and Fire Championship Courses, alongside an impressive clubhouse, and presents a range of premium services for golfing, dining and leisure enthusiasts alike. As part of the management deal, Dubai Golf aims to look at all aspects of the operation. “Apart from a great opportunity for Dubai Golf, this is an extremely positive move for the members of all three clubs, as they will be exposed to a number of benefits across all three properties,” says May. Dubai Golf has been at the forefront of golf and golf related services since its inception in the Emirates. It currently owns and manages two prestigious golf clubs, with facilities that include three golf courses, a marina, 11 restaurants and other extensive leisure facilities. The company is proud of its responsibility and seeks to continue to innovate and lead the industry in future.

Dear Members, Since my last update there have been some big golf stories of which you are now fully aware. It was fantastic to see our 2001 Omega Dubai Desert Classic Champion, Thomas Bjorn, lead the European Team to a 7-point triumph in the Ryder Cup in Paris! Well done to Thomas and his team, including honorary members McIlroy, Garcia and Stenson for a fantastic three days of golf. RYDER CUP DINNER We are thrilled to announce that we will host a Ryder Cup dinner with guests Peter Cowen and Dominic Bott to provide members and their guests a glimpse of ‘inside the ropes’ of the 2018 Ryder Cup matches and life on Tour. Peter Cowen is regarded as one of the best coaches in world golf; during the Paris Ryder Cup matches he looked after Henrik Stenson (3 points from 3 games), Ian Poulter (2 points from 4) and Brooks Koepka (1.5 from 4). Peter will be joined by Dominic who caddies for Thorbjorn Olesen who was five-under par for 14 holes to take down Jordan Spieth 5&4 in the singles. Dominic has caddied for 25 years, carrying Peter Cowen

for the likes of Montgomerie, Casey, Bjorn, Westwood and now Olesen. The details of the event are below: Date: Saturday 10th November Time: 7:00pm Venue: Emirates Central, Emirates Golf Club Dubai Golf Member (EGC, DCGYC, JGE): AED120 (Inc. dinner buffet and welcome drink) Non-member: AED 180 (Inc. dinner buffet and welcome drink) To book please contact Emiratesdining@dubaigolf.com OMEGA DUBAI LADIES CLASSIC You may have read in the local media that big changes to the Omega Dubai Ladies Classic were announced in September. Emirates Golf Club has proudly hosted the Ladies European Tour event since 2006 over our Majlis course and produced some fantastic champions including Annika Sorenstam in the first two years and Shanshan Feng on four occasions. The new reformatted event will take place as below: • 1st-3rd May 2019, no event in 2018 • Faldo course NOT the Majlis • 3-day event consisting of 56 LET Professionals • Pros to play three rounds • Rounds 2 and 3 will be a Pro-Am format similar to the Alfred Dunhill Links event which took place last week in Scotland. Reasons for moving the event and restructuring: • The December date has always been such a busy part of the Dubai sports calendar competing with huge events on the run up to the December date including the DP World Tour Championship, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and Rugby 7’s plus National Day and the festive run-in which has resulted in slightly lower crowds than expected. • Golf in Dubai, the organisers and promoters of the event are also motivated by promoting golf in Dubai later in the year not just November to January. • Social events are planned each evening to enhance the engagement of the players with the sponsors and guests. The Pro-Am format also fits this goal. • It would also be the first Professional event played under lights as the afternoon rounds are scheduled to finish under our Faldo lights. From an Emirates Golf Club point of view, the Majlis course will be under slightly less strain this season with the course only being prepared for one Tour event and not two only six weeks apart. Additionally you, our members, will benefit from nine days more play on Majlis course including two weekends; the extent of closures over previous years has been noted. Furthermore, the 9th and 18th green hospitality build will take place in midNovember as opposed to early October. The structure will be taken down post Omega Dubai Desert Classic as in previous years. Also note, golf in Dubai have been working hard to provide new hospitality structures - visuals will follow in the next issue of Club Life. FALDO LIGHTING For those of you who are regular players of the Faldo Night golf course you may well have seen improved lighting on holes 2, 8 and 12; we are currently testing three suppliers with the plan to replace all lights with energy saving LED bulbs in Q1 of 2019. OFFICIAL STARTER MARSHAL You will also soon meet, if you have not already, our new Official Starter Marshal, Steve Holmes, Steve joins us with excellent experience from the UK and will assist Neri and his team to enforce our pace of play policy. However, his primary role will be to improve golf etiquette. For far too long now, members and guests alike feel it is acceptable to leave bunkers unraked and they also fail to repair pitch marks. Steve has my full backing to improve this side of the golfing experience that is currently below par Best Regards, Barney Coleman Club Manager Dominic Bott

M

y inaugural month as Captain has been extremely busy. So much has been happening at the Club that I felt as if I was residing here 24/7.

Of course, the rest of us who watched at the Club, were treated to a wonderful atmosphere in Spike Bar for the three days. The place was packed each day inside and out. Not a spare seat was available for anyone who turned up late. Well done to Jaco and his team for the service they provided over the three days. We had plenty of tournaments in September with the Seniors Open, the Mike Gerbich Cup, the OMA Medal and also the Barclays Member/Guest competition. Congratulations to all the winners; it was great to see so many members participating. It was also pleasing to have so many members stay for the presentations - hopefully it will stay like this for all our events. I was lucky enough to have a good day in

We also had the announcement that Jumeirah Golf Estates is now under the Dubai Golf banner. This is a superb addition and opens up more opportunities for game time for members. We now have five courses to choose from which shows great value for money in being an Emirates Golf Club member. The month of October continues with the many activities and events at the Club. The biggest event for me is creeping up as the Season Opener with be on October 12th. This is usually the kick-start for the event calendar year, when the Lady Captain and I will be trying to hit a decent drive down the first. I will know, on a smaller scale, how the players at the Ryder Cup may have felt hitting their first shots. The thought of so many watching my efforts to find the fairway is already making me nervous. It will be a very proud moment for me and one I want to cherish and enjoy on the day…even if the first drive doesn’t go too far. I hope to see as many of you participate on the day. Sulafa and I have put an emphasis on the day being fun and we hope that everyone will enjoy it. All will be revealed on the day. I want to wish Lady Captain all the best as she has two drive-ins this month . It’s bad enough being nervous once, but twice - she has ice running though her veins! With so many tournaments happening I suggest logging on to the Dubai Golf Members’ site and registering for the events. They can fill up so quickly but I know Nishanthi is always accommodating in getting everyone in on tournament day. You may also have noticed that the site now has had a revamp and is more user-friendly with more information. Well done to all involved on this.

OMA Emirates September Medal 2018

F

riday 28th September saw the return of the OMA Emirates Medal Championship, in association with i-Insured, which was played on the Majlis course. Our overall winner was Club Captain Paul Byrne having carded a solid 71 net strokes. This score meant Paul claimed the ‘Luckiest Ball on Earth’ prize, for his chance to play in the DP World Pro-Am at Jumeirah Golf Estates in November. Paul’s score was also good enough to take the top prize in A Division (handicaps 0-10), beating Imran Qayyum and Anil Shivanna who both shot 74 net, with Imran winning the scorecard playoff on the back 9. Best gross on the day went to Connor Forbes with a 3 over par 75 total and a better back 9 score.

In B Division (handicaps 11-20), finishing on top of the pack was Tauseef Khan with a great score of 72 net. Mandeep Vohra came second with 74 strokes which was good enough to hold off the challenge of Rajesh Verma by one stroke. In C Division (handicaps 21-28), our winner was Paolo Pedroni, scoring a net 77. Dalip Tripathi claimed the stableford prize in the Medalford format with 33 points. The Ladies’ Stableford winner was Liang Wei Liu who had an amazing 41 points for her round!

4

For those of you playing the Majlis recently, we are seeing the course in pristine condition already. Matt and his team have done a wonderful job on the course set up and this can only benefit all of us. Just remember to keep raking the bunkers for the next group behind you and repairing your pitch marks. Also note that it’s the policy of Emirates Golf Club to leave the rakes outside bunkers and not in them.

Captain’s Message

I suppose I couldn’t start my write up without mentioning the Ryder Cup. It was fantastic from start to finish with the standard of golf sublime. Congratulations to the European team on the result. Thomas Bjorn was an inspirational Captain and I’m sure he will greeted with high regard and respect when he visits for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. The camaraderie and friendship within the European team shone through and was a deciding factor in their win. For me the winner was Le Golf National course. It was tailor-made for an event like this with fantastic matchplay holes and excellent viewing areas for spectators. The first hole cauldron is the best I have ever seen and the energy and buzz from it was unbelievable. I know there were many Emirates Golf Club members at the event and they all said it was the best golf event they have ever attended. It will be great to watch some of these heroes at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in January.

the Medal winning the overall prize. I say that could be my winning highlight of the year as apparently, being Captain does not assist your game throughout the year.

You should check out all the special evenings going on at the Club. Happy hours, Around the World in a Curry and BBQ nights on Fridays. The Oktoberfest is happening also and is sure to be a great event at Emirates Central. All the information on these events is available in the Spike Bar. Ask Jaco and the team and they will advise. Best of luck to all players in the Tri-Nations which is taking place this month. This is possibly one of the oldest events in the Club and is keenly fought between England, Ireland and Scotland. Finally, if you have any issues or ideas on how to improve your experience at the Club, please let he Members’ Consultative Committee (MCC) know and we will aim to improve all aspects at the Club. No suggestion is too small or too big so please feel free to comment. The MCC has been very constructive in taking members’ comments and turning them into reality. We had our first meeting in September and you will see some great initiatives being rolled out soon to make our Club a more environmentally friendly place. Thank you all and enjoy your golf. Paul Byrne Club Captain 2018-2019

I

f you could hear me now you would witness a huge sigh of relief. The first few weeks of my Captaincy have been busy and productive; the first speech is well out of the way and I have successfully managed to pair the green jacket with a few outfits for the upcoming presentations. I’d like to take you through a typical week in the life of the Lady Captain and her Vice-Captain in the ladies’ section. Our roles do keep us incredibly busy and this is something we love. Our week often begins with both of us at the back of the driving range, early on Sunday morning, gearing up for the tournaments ahead. You don’t need to be the best player to become a Captain - it’s just not part of the job description. It’s a known fact actually that this role can hold back your game but it gives me great pleasure to tell you that our Lady Vice-Captain, Yana Jamieson, proved this theory wrong by

winning two weeks in a row. What a great start! Certainly by now you may have noticed that there is always a huge turnout of competitive ladies on the driving range on the Mondays for the 8.30am shotgun start. The Monday tournaments are followed by a relaxed lunch and a prize presentation. A big thank you to all the ladies who stay around; your support means a lot. The Tuesday morning Beginners’ Group with the Vice-Captain is a great programmes that was initiated many years ago. This is, without a doubt, the best opportunity for ladies who are new to the game, to learn the golfing rules and etiquette in a fun and friendly way on the Faldo course. Meanwhile Martha, our wonderful Tuesday evening social event organiser, is continously on the lookout or the best deals in town for our monthly social evenings.

Over 50 glamorous Emirates Golf Club ladies invade the best places in town. Men, you definitely don’t want to be there!!! The social Wednesday is often dedicated to sign-ups with friends. This quiet intermission is a respite from the active first half of the week and a welcome pause to prepare for the weekend of mixed tournaments. Thursdays are dedicated to doing the draw for the Monday tournaments. Our task is to make sure that all ladies who would like to play have signed up, trying our very best to have a draw that’s agreeable for all. That’s our week in a nutshell. Sulafa Hamdan Lady Captain 2018-2019

Improve your posture and arm hang for a better golf swing

n often overlooked fundamental of the golf swing is the posture we adopt in setting up to the ball. It’s no coincidence that the world’s most successful players all have great posture.

Start your season off by improving your posture and find how much better your balance and, in turn, your body movement improves throughout your swing. Perfect posture makes body rotation easier to achieve enabling you to swing on a better plane and swing path and ultimately with more power and accuracy. Drill for perfect posture and arm hang -

Picture 1

Stand tall and in balance with your body straight up and down and your feet shoulder width apart. Place a club across your hips and locate your hip joints with your thumbs.

Picture 2

Bend forward from your hips (not your waist) without hunching your shoulders with your weight towards the front of your feet. Your legs (in particular your hamstrings) should feel stretched up and the sensation that your heels are coming off the ground.

Picture 3 Arm hang

Once you are in the perfect posture simply let your arms hang down naturally and freely and in front of your body. Relaxed arms, not tense, are a must to achieve optimum speed and efficiency from your swing

A common mistake is the tendency to sit back on your heels when your knees are flexed. Always feel your balance is maintained underneath your sternum and on the balls of your feet.

Finally flex your knees, feeling pressure on your thighs. This movement will bring the balance to the balls of your feet and calves giving you a solid and dynamic sensation with your balance all round your feet.

“A GOOD SWING IS BUILT ON SOLID FOUNDATIONS!” Peter Cowen Academy, Emirates Golf Club.

We may not achieve a swing as good as the world’s greats but we can all improve our posture and open the door to an improved and more consistent swing – Have an enjoyable and successful season.

Bunkers on Majlis Course What we are now doing and have changed since Matt Perry came on board at the start of the summer

T

he bunkers get very hard mainly due to irrigation water; they compact and can go like concrete. What we have started to do is tiller these bunkers a lot more often. There is an attachment on the bunker rake that is called duck feet which gets pushed down into the sand when raking, tillers the sand and softens it.This is being done every day currently.

FAREWELL TO

J

We hand-rake all bunkers around the greens after the machine has been in there. In the big fairway bunkers we use the bunker rake with spring rakes on the back which presents them just like hand raking. We are just finishing off our big bunker tilling where we get in the bunker with a big rotary tiller and then push the sand back up against

GERRY & SELMA

ust a short note from us to say goodbye and to thank everybody at this great Club where we have been members since our arrival in Dubai in early 2013. Five and a half years of golf enjoyment, great tournaments and fantastic Club camaraderie. Saturdays were special for me, while Selma favoured Mondays, but there was always plenty of golf and excellent Club life in between. We leave Dubai with mixed emotions, sad to leave the UAE and especially Emirates Golf Club which we have enjoyed so much, but at the same time, excited to return to our adopted home, Houston Texas. Hopefully we will return some time to visit Dubai again, or perhaps while passing through to another destination. A special thanks to the management and colleagues at Emirates Golf Club who make a dedicated effort to make life at the Club such a great experience, both on and off the golf course. We will always miss the wonderful moments we have had here. Farewell, Gerry & Selma Kehoe

ARABELLA GOLF COURSE, SOUTH AFRICA

T

he Arabella golf course in South Africa is ranked by Compleat Golfer magazine as the number one golf course in the Western Cape. It is also featured in Golf Digest’s USA’s Top 60 courses outside of America in 2007. Designed and built in 1999 by celebrated South African golf course architect Peter Matkovich, who is also credited with the design of Western Cape courses de Zalze and Steenberg, this classic parkland course has spectacular views across the Bot River lagoon and across the Kogelberg mountain range.

The pristine fairways are Kikuyu, while the greens, which frequently receive high praise from professionals in the game, are Dominant Bent. The golf course has been refined in the past six years with the addition of several bunkers and the revamp of the par-four 6th hold in order to rid it of its blind tee shot. Awarded Five-Star Golf Experience for the first time in 2002, the course is complemented by a luxurious clubhouse with bar and halfway house, as well as a fully stocked pro shop and excellent practice area with two resident teaching professionals.

The Arabella Golf Club has been the annual home to the Nelson Mandela Invitational Charity Golf tournament from 2003, hosting the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Samuel L Jackson, Ronan Keating, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Tim Clark, Lee Westwood and Sam Torrance. These and other top names have made a valuable contribution to Gary Player’s initiative to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Foundation and the Player Foundation. There is no doubt that a round of golf here ranks with the best experiences anywhere in the world.

YANA JAMIESON

Men’s VICE-Captain 2018-2019

Lady VICE-Captain 2018-2019

Ishu started his career in 1975 in Tokyo, Japan with his elder brother. In 1979 he moved to Hong Kong and started his own trading company in Consumer Electronics followed by a move to Dubai in 1992 with the same trading business. He now does consultancy work in the Real Estate Market in UAE. He joined Emirates Golf Club in 1994 with a starting handicap of 28 which is now 10.3

I grew up in the beautiful city of Saint Petersburg and graduated in economics and finance. I came to Dubai over 22 years ago with my family to set up a trading company. Later I met Peter who introduced me to that rather strange game called golf and I got the golfing bug...and nothing is better than having the whole family share that same golfing passion!! From the very start I was so fortunate to have met some of the very special ladies like Jacqui Barry, Paula Johnstone, Joan Legnar and Margaret Bain who have become very good friends of mine over the years. I have enjoyed our Club and the lasting friendships, but in particular there is nothing to beat our ladies’ section. Our past Lady Captains have done us proud. I’m extremely honoured to be the Lady Vice-Captain and I am already enjoying working with and learning from Sulafa, (and of course the main men.. Paul and Ishu).

Michael Mezei

Leonardo Mochi Sismondi (aka Leo), grew up in Rome, and after 16 years in London, he moved to Dubai in the summer of 2014 where he managed to squeeze in just under 350 rounds of golf …with mixed results. Leonardo is a Senior Sales Executive for Bloomberg, focusing on Middle Eastern financial markets and he has been with them for over 18 years.

Now retired from a career in the oil industry, Ian’s final position was President/Chief Executive of Shell Oil Products Africa where he was responsible for the strategic direction and management of the 36 African country marketing companies in the Shell Africa portfolio. He was raised in Scotland where he learned to play golf as a schoolboy since when the fascination with the game has remained. In the UK he is a member of the Wisley Golf Club in Surrey. Married to Francoise with three married daughters and six grandchildren he is always busy. Both Ian and Francoise have been active in the Club since 1999 (except for the three year period when they were based in Africa).

Mike Mezei was born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. He and his wife Bianca have called Dubai (and Emirates Golf Club) home since late 2014 after they moved via a work transfer with Packers Plus Energy Services. Prior to that Mike played professional golf on many international tours for nine years (2005-2013) and graduated in 2004 with a BA in Economics from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Rules By R

9 Holes of Rules...

In this month’s article I will answer nine questions that will help to recap and brush up on your basic knowledge for the next time you head out to the course 1. What does the term “Equity” mean? Equity means to treat like situations alike. Some situations are not covered by the rules of golf, thus the decision must be made according to what is fair under the rules. Equity is NOT a substitute for the proper application of the rules. 2. Can a player place a club on the ground to help alignment? Yes, provided the club is removed before playing the stroke. Otherwise the player is penalised 2 strokes. 3. If my ball lands in a bunker can I rake it before I play my shot? Yes, provided that it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course. For example, your ball lies on the left hand side and after retrieving the rake you smooth your footprints in order to keep the bunker tidy before moving to your ball. There are no penalties providing that the smoothing does not improve: • The lie of the ball. • The area of your intended stance or swing. • Your line of play for a stroke.

4. May a player clean a ball by rubbing it on the putting green? Yes, provided the act is not for the purpose of testing the surface of the putting green. However, It is strongly recommended that a ball be cleaned in other ways to eliminate any questions as to the player’s intentions. 5. A player’s ball is lying on the fairway and in taking a practice swing, he accidentally moves the ball. Does he incur a penalty? The player did not make a stroke, as they had no intention of making a stroke. However, the ball was in play and the player has caused the ball at rest to move. The player incurs a one stroke penalty and must replace the ball.

6. May stakes defining a water hazard or lateral water hazard be moved? A water hazard stake is an obstruction. Therefore if such a stake is movable it may be removed without penalty. Please note that white Out of Bounds posts MUST NOT be removed! 7. Where can a player deem his ball unplayable? A player can deem his ball unplayable anywhere on the course except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether his ball is unplayable. 8. Must a player announce that he intends to change his ball between the play of two holes? It is not required by the rules to inform anyone what type of ball he intends to play at a hole. However, such an announcement is highly recommended to avoid any possible confusion. 9. Can I remove sand that lies on the putting green even though my ball lies off the putting green? Sand and loose soils are loose impediments ONLY when they lie on the putting green. Provided that the sand and loose soil lie on the putting green and NOT the surround, it may be removed. If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply email your query to rjames@dubaigolf.com

Emirates Golf Club is delighted to welcome Steve Holmes as our official Starter Marshal for the season ahead. Dear Members,

The Dubai Fitness Challenge commences on October 19th until November 17th. DFC started last year as a citywide initiative of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman Executive Council for Dubai Government. His goal is to challenge every resident and visitor in the city to exercise continuously for at least 30 minutes for 30 consecutive days, turning Dubai into the most active city in the world.

Shihan Wayne and his family went back to Australia over the summer and, as well as relaxing, he had the pleasure of coaching the Australian branch of our Karate club who once again dominated at the Australian National Titles. Big things are also ahead in the UAE for our Karate students with a new belt grading which is fast approaching at the end of October followed by a two-day Black Belt Grading in December! We also say farewell to Clayton Sensei who is heading back to Australia with his family; we will miss him immensely and we thank him for the sensational effort he has put in to help launch KBIUAE at the Club. He is excited about continuing his love of KBI in Adelaide with the launch of his own Dojo. Good luck Sensei.

Here at Emirates Golf Club we will be hosting a YogaFest by Artistic Yoga on October 19th at 6.30am on the lawn. This will be free of charge and we welcome you to bring any friends or guests. We will also be inviting our colleagues and our goal is to get 500 plus people to attend so please support this event. We will also be doing a walk around the Golf Club; I will update you on the date and timing once confirmed. Your support for the Dubai Fitness Challenge will be greatly appreciated; please download the app to subscribe As mentioned to you in the previous Club Life issue, we always strive to keep on evolving month on month and for those of you who don’t know Wayne Macdonald, it gives me great pleasure to introduce him. Wayne is a very humble guy and he won’t mind me saying that he is a former World Number 1 Karate Black Belt Champion. We

Massage We work with our entire body that includes our heart, nervous system and our organs. Some exercises are designed to massage the heart, the viscera to remove any tension that may be caused during the strengthening time. Because we get to manipulate our internal organs with our breath and movement, this action stimulates our intestines and also helps us lose weight.

Fit Lab

I’m sure you are now back into your routine after the summer break and it’s great to see so many of you using the facilities at Fit Lab. I would like to welcome existing members back to the Club and welcome all new members. If you have any queries regarding our prestigious facility please do not hesitate to contact me or my team.

are fortunate enough to have Wayne and his fantastic team teaching here at the Club; Karate has started extremely well this term with some excited new faces and all the former students getting rid of the cobwebs after a long and much needed summer break.

Decompression Our joints absorbs the weight of gravity and the rolling and unrolling decompresses each joints and contributes to better mobility. Lengthening Stretching is only holding the muscles in one position while lengthening takes into account the tendon and the ligament making them more pliable and resilient. This kind of dynamic stretching improves circulation and corrects wrong posture. Each exercise in Pilates creates a complete harmony in the human body from head to toe, because we need to concentrate on what we are doing; each time we are in class, we increase our focus attention and attention span.

If you are in the process of looking for a positive, healthy physical activity that also delivers essential life skills for the family then please call Wayne on 050 6206767 or email wayne@masterclassmat.com

EXERCISE TIP OF THE MONTH BY CHRIS MALLET

The Kettlebell

W

hether your goal is to lose weight, build some muscle, get stronger or just improve your overall fitness, one thing is for sure and that is, that it requires more than one style or method of training. It is said that the definition of stability is building strength in different planes of motion and stability should always be of paramount importance in any training programme. So what are the different planes of motion? Well there are three, the Frontal plane which divides the body from front to back, the Sagital plane which divides from left to right and the Transverse plane which divides from top to bottom.

Jeanique Pilates is a fully equipped studio with three Reformers, four Towers, one Cadillac, four chairs and one barrel to support individual needs and preferences in either group, private, duo or trio sessions. Classical Pilates is for everybody! We look forward to seeing you at Fit Lab!!!!. Healthy Regards Andy Meech Head of Sports & Leisure

When used correctly the kettlebell can work through all planes of motion and help improve exercises such as the squat, the deadlift, overhead press and more. It can also be used to challenge your cardiovascular endurance and improve muscular imbalances which may lead to injury if not corrected. Common exercises include the ‘swing’ which is great for firing up the glutes, hamstrings and core; the ‘front squat’ which engages the quads and obliques; the ‘manmaker’ which challenges hip stability; the windmill which challenges your deep core stabilisers and strength through the shoulders. Give these a go in your next gym session. If you’re not sure how, contact me at The Fit Lab and see how you can make kettlebells part of your weekly exercise routine.

CHEF NICHOLAS CUOMO

Malta & Olive oil F&B

BY CHEF NICHOLAS CUOMO Dear Members,

M

alta and its sister island Gozo possess something which very few olive-growing Mediterranean countries can lay claim to – lack of space!

While this doesn’t sound like a notable ingredient for success, it certainly adds to the distinct character of the olives; but we’ll get onto that later, firstly let’s look at these beautiful islands’ relationship with the fruit. As you’d expect, olives are present in many of the traditional Maltese dishes, from the rich tomato sauces served with the local fish lampuki to the ubiquitous rabbit stews.

I hope that you have had an enjoyable summer; we have been working hard in the F&B department to prepare for the upcoming season. We are looking forward to welcoming back some popular favourites as well as introducing some new items to enhance your dining experience even further at the Club. Some of the highlights are detailed below:

SPIKE BAR

• A new menu has just been launched that also includes an introduction of some Korean favourites • Our special events including the BBQ Night, Curry Night, Meat Grill and the popular Quiz will all return • The cooler weather has seen the re-opening of the terrace and we will continue to showcase the best sporting action live from around the world on our 16 screens • We look forward to introducing an enhanced lunch buffet

Recent archaeological finds have proved that the Romans were producing oil here 2,000 years ago and this has led to an exciting new era in Maltese olive oil. You can only see this in Malta! A white olive tree with fruit of such pearlescent beauty that it would have seemed a crime to pick them. They would make great oil, but we have so few that it simply would not be worth it.

JONES

This tree holds the key to success in gaining recognition for the country’s produce on the global scene up against it, as the olives grown in Malta were generally of Puglia origin or recognised as another country’s olive, so the oil produced wouldn’t be permitted a ‘Maltese Olive Oil’ label in the eyes of those controlling food’s geographical origin - it would have to have been an ‘Italian Olive Oil produced in Malta.

CARINE

Several serendipitous archaeological finds and lab tests later, it was proved that two varieties of olive are in fact indigenous to the islands – the white olive, and the bidni olive. So in 1997 re-production began on Maltese olive oil. The oil is so good for several reasons, but mainly because of the small island, never really far from the coast in Malta, which means the briny air from the deep waters of the surrounding Mediterranean blows its saltiness into all produce grown here. This gives everything a satisfying tang in its raw state – including the olives and the grapes and therefore the oil and the wine. But the small island also means transportation times are kept to an absolute minimum; ‘tree to press’ is a matter of hours or even minutes. Freshness is key.

• The popular Jazz, Cheese and Wine nights have now restarted. • Jones the Grocer at Emirates Golf Club is now available on Deliveroo • We have been working on a series of cooking classes and the schedule will be shared shortly • The new menu will be introduced in September, alongside a special dinner menu • We are introducing a new beverage and wine menu • Daily specials and additional seasonal dishes are also now available at Carine • Breakfast is available on weekends and public holidays • Lunch is currently available from Wednesday to Saturday • We are looking forward to the re-opening of the terrace which will offer great cocktails as well as music from our resident DJ.

HUTS

• We are introducing a new menu for the season ahead which includes some new additions such as hot soup

POOL

• A new pool menu will be introduced soon I hope that you enjoy the changes that we have made and I look forward to seeing you during the season ahead! Chef Nicholas Cuomo

Pace of Play - The Basics

I

’m sure that everyone will agree that a round of golf is far more enjoyable when the speed of play is flowing nicely and every group stays in position for the duration of the round.

What Influences Pace of Play? • The players • The management of play • Golf course design and set-up Very few golfers will admit that they are slow players but I’m sure we can all do our bit to play a little bit faster, below are some basic guidelines that can help us do just that.

Be Ready to Play: • While you are waiting to play, use this time wisely so when it is your turn to play you are ready. • Ready golf - Be ready to play as soon as it is your turn to play • Leave your bags/cart in such a position to enable quick movement off the green and towards the next tee. • Immediately leave the green on completion of the hole • Do not mark your scorecard when it is your turn to play • Whoever has the honour on the next tee should be ready to play • Be aware of your position with regard to the group in front, don’t concern yourself with the group behind • Assess the wind strength and direction • Decide on the type of shot you’re going to play • Select your club • Don’t wait until it is your turn to play before putting your glove on • Don’t wait until it is your turn to play before calculating a yardage • Look at your own line of putt while your fellow competitors look at theirs (within the bounds of normal etiquette)

ALL OF THE ABOVE CAN USUALLY BE DONE WHILST WAITING FOR YOUR TURN TO PLAY.

• When it is your turn to play, play promptly. • Consider your pre-shot routine - saving even a few seconds will help. • When the play of a hole has been completed, leave the putting green without any delay.

Play at a Good Pace: • Make every effort to keep up with the group ahead. • Always play a provisional ball to save time if you think your ball may be lost outside of a water hazard or is out of bounds. • Play from the tees that reflect your ability. One of the reasons behind different tee options is to cater for all abilities. • Be mindful of your position on the course. Be more conscious of the group ahead rather than the group behind... especially relevant if you are a 4-ball following a 4-ball etc!! • Follow any guidelines/policies set by Club management. BARNEY

AND RHYS WELCOME ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE ON OUR POLICIES HERE AT THE CLUB.

On the Putting Green: • DO assess your line, repair pitch marks and remove loose impediments whilst others are playing. • DO move away from the green once all players have holed out. • DO mark scorecards on the way to or at the next tee.

Emirates Golf Club Time Allocations for 4-Ball Groups: • Majlis Course: 4hrs 6minutes • Faldo Course: 4hrs 10minutes • Faldo Night Course: 4hrs 20minutes PLEASE NOTE that our policy states that these are only guidelines. It’s the pace of play on the day, the number of players in the group and any gaps between groups that will determine any decision made by our marshal team. We kindly ask for your assistance and co-operation with our course marshals. They are there to help and for the benefit of all golfers.

Golfing etiquette states that ‘it is a

group’s responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If you lose a clear hole and are delaying the group behind, you should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in the group’ (R&A Rules of Golf 2016, page 27) One misconception is that the above statement is irrespective of your PACE

OF PLAY IN RELATION TO TIME. For example two hours is perfectly acceptable for a 4-ball to complete 9-holes of golf BUT if they are delaying a full course behind with a two-hole gap ahead of them, then the above statement should be adhered to. If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply email your query to rjames@dubaigolf.com

CONGRATULATIONS TO PAST CAPTAIN, SURENDER KANDHARI ON THE PUBLICATION AND LAUNCH OF AUTOBIOGRAPHY, ‘TEMPLE OF MY DREAMS’

His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan launches Surender Kandhari biography “Temple of My Dreams is a tribute to hard work and commitment”, says Minister t a glittering ceremony at the Atlantis Hotel last month, His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Cabinet Member and Minister of Tolerance UAE, released Temple of my Dreams, the autobiography of philanthropist, businessman, long-term resident of Dubai and Past Captain of Emirates Golf Club, Surender Singh Kandhari. A select gathering of Emiratis and expatriates, including the Indian Ambassador to UAE Navdeep Suri and Consul General of India Vipul were present on this occasion. Sheikh Nahayan praised the book, published by Motivate and said, “The story of his achievement, so well told in this engaging autobiography, reveals how the spirit of tolerance, evoked by Sheikh Zayed, encouraged skilled and ambitious people to take a chance in the UAE. Surender has helped our country prosper and has

A

confirmed the wisdom of Sheikh Zayed.” The book has four major strands. It stands as testament to the creation and development of an industrial empire that now employs over 2000 people, gives one an inside look into the tyre and battery industry on a global scale and provides signposts to young entrepreneurs on how to set up their businesses. The book is also a personal account of an extraordinary life and these factors are bound together by the inspiration derived from construction of the Guru Nanak Sahib Guruduwara in Dubai and how this incredible house of worship was conceived and turned into reality, that being the core basis for the title of the book. Sheikh Nahayan also added, “Most significant to me is his moral tier that exhibits a degree of tolerance which demands our admiration and gratitude. His is a life that inspires us all.” Ambassador Suri expressed his admiration

for the effort and said that it was evidence of the bond that exists between the UAE and India and a book like this is testament to that sense of brotherhood. One of the special relationships the author explores is that of India and UAE which is why he said he chose Dubai for the primary release of the book. Among other celebrities who flew in from various parts of the world were former Indian cricket captain Bishen Singh Bedi, tennis ace CGK Bhupathi and the British Business Group Chairman and classmate Christie Cherian. Thanking his guests for being present, Surender Kandhari said it had been an incredible year and he thanked the Minister and the government of UAE for promoting tolerance, interfaith harmony, and cultural identities while making 140 plus nationalities feel at home. He said his book saluted this exceptional nation and its priorities and the privilege of living and working in the Emirates.

TRIP TO SLOVENIA WITH 2017-2018 CLUB CAPTAIN, IVAN FORNAZERIC written by Professional Bryan Smyth

• A truly amazing five-day golf trip to Slovenia, home to 2017-18 Captain, Ivan Fornazaric was organized this summer. The trip included world class golf, warm hospitality, outstanding local cuisine, breathtaking scenery, stunning architecture and rich history. • Accommodation was in a 5-star castle dating back to 1252 • Slovenian cuisine was on a par with the world’s best, including a visit to Hisa Franko, home to Ana Ros, voted worlds best female chef 2017. • We also had an unforgettable wine tasting experience at Movia. • We played stunning mountain golf at Otocec and Cubo Golf. The golfing highlight was underpinned with a match against Royal Bled Golf Club and we are looking forward to welcoming the Royal Bled members to Emirates Golf Club for the return match. • Slovenian culture was amazing…we were treated to a capital city tour of Ljubljana and its medieval castle, constructed in the 11th century and a visit to Lake Bled, home of the breathtaking Bled Island Chapel. Finally, we were cordially invited to visit Ivan’s home town, Nova Gorika on the Slovenian/Italian border before returning to Dubai via Venice, Italy. • On Saturday 13th September we has a reunion dinner at Carine to reminisce and celebrate a truly world-class trip.

OMEGA DUBAI LADIES MASTERS SIGNIFICANT CHANGE! Andy Meech

Past Captains, Tom & Jacqui Barry, Joan & Rai Legnar

The Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, which started in 2006, will undergo a big change in format and will also be renamed the Omega Dubai Moonlight Classic. Traditionally played as the last event on the Ladies European Tour schedule, it will now move to May 2019 and will be played on the Faldo course, both during the day and under floodlights. However numbers will be significantly reduced with only the top 35 on the LET moneylist together with 21 sponsor invites. The format is unique in that the Professionals will play their first round on 1st May during the day and, for the final 36 holes, they will be joined by three amateur players for the next 36 holes, one round of which, each player will play under floodlights.
