t’s 30 years since Emirates Golf Club opened its doors for membership. What an incredible journey. There are very few of the original founder members around now and that’s no surprise given the transience of Dubai. What Emirates Golf Club, and indeed Dubai, has achieved in those years is nothing short of incredible. The expansion of the city has been huge as well as the developments at the club over this time too.

EMIRATES GOLF CLUB SENIOR MANAGEMENT3

His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister and Vice-President of the UAE came up with the initial idea to build the first grass course in the Middle East and, as soon as a suitable site was found and approved, work got started and Emirates Golf Club was created opening up for membership in 1988. I’ m sure everyone has seen the photograph below of the original one kilometre square of green in the middle of the desert. The main Dubai-Abu Dhabi ‘highway’ consisted of two lanes in each direction, unlit at night, with numerous potholes and a sandy waste area as the central reservation where we could u-turn at any point or just drive off-road! The club in those days was situated so far out of the city with not a single building nearby. Now, when one looks at ‘the site’, it is surrounded by housing developments, hotels, offices, Dubai Marina, the Palm Jumeirah and it is so central to many places around. When the very first Dubai Desert Classic was held, it was an unknown destination for many professionals who travelled here back then and today, the Dubai Desert Classic attracts some of the world’s best players. What incredible progress, not only of the Club but also of Dubai! Thinking back to 1988, the club opened with the clubhouse, a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, practice facilities and a tiny gym situated in what is now a small part of the ladies’ locker room. Roll on thirty years and we now have two fantastic courses, a par 3 course, the Peter Cowen Academy,, a top of the range gym, complete with physiotherapy/osteopathy centre, a spa, tennis, squash and swimming, Padel tennis courts, two driving ranges, as well as numerous dining outlets. In addition we have dedicated colleagues, an excellent senior management team, membership services, our very own publishing team and golf course maintenance. Wow, the list is endless.

I think it’s fair to say that we members become very blasé about what we have here. Just think through your day when you arrive for a game of golf… your clubs are dropped at bag drop and delivered to a buggy (or a caddie), you check in at the first tee where you’re given tee pegs, water, towel, score card and wished all the best for your round. During your round, you visit the refreshment huts and avail of the huge selection of food and beverages, you’re marshalled throughout the round and kept informed of any slow groups ahead or requested to speed up if you have lost some ground. Come into the club after the round, clubs and shoes are cleaned and you have numerous options for your post-round dining and refreshments not forgetting the wonderful service by all colleagues throughout. Most visitors to the club are totally overawed with what the club has to offer - it is truly a fantastic hub for golfing, socialising and/or networking. Thank you to everyone who makes it all possible. Welcome back to Past Captains, Trudi Green, Sue Connor, Jean Sullivan, Nancy Wingate, Jim Carrigy, Mike Connor, Simon and Jackie Blenkinsop, Nova and Ken Matheson, Alwyn and David Nesbitt, Bill Gandy, Malaysia’s and Suresh Subberwal, Scott Doak, Cheh Ngim and Steve Ratcliffe. Dear Members,

I

hope you enjoyed the 30th Anniversary Members” Party, another memorable and iconic night in the history of our great club. Thank you to all members who joined us for the celebrations and for your kind feedback Our new Carine restaurant was used as a welcoming venue for the Members’ Party; we are looking forward to welcoming our members and guests to dine at Carine to enjoy the great menu that Chef Izu has created when it opens officially in the next two weeks. The restaurant will be officially open for reservations from 18th March but I am pleased to announce that our members can book from 12th – 17th March and avail of an opening week special of 50% discount as opposed to your standard 25%. If you would like to make a booking please contact reservations@carine.ae and Diana, our Guest Relations Manager will be delighted to assist. We have also introduced some great new dining promotions at the Club. In Jones the Grocer our Grape and Cheese Nights with Live Jazz on Thursdays have proved to be very popular, along with our BBQ Chillin’ and Grillin’ Saturdays. In addition, Spike Bar hosts The Ultimate Sports Quiz every Sunday with popular Dubai Eye presenters Chris McHardy and Robbie Greenfield and we have recently introduced a Curry Club on Tuesdays where a starter and main course from the Hari Ghotra menu, along with a selected beverage, is just AED 100 per person. OMA Emirates have been a key partner of Dubai Golf since 2015; they are now the headline sponsor of the Men’s Monthly Medal with i-Insured coming on board as a supporting sponsor and official insurance partner of Emirates Golf Club. It is fantastic to welcome Palazzo Versace as our new sponsor of the Ladies’ Monthly Medal, I know that the prizes have been very well received and we are delighted to have them on board as a new partner of the club. In addition, we have strengthened our partnership with Peter Cowen; in becoming a Peter Cowen Academy our Golf Professionals now have even greater access to the world’s top performing golf coach. We will shortly be launching a series of 30-minute quick fix lessons in conjunction with Peter Cowen, which are designed to help with specific areas of your game in just 30 minutes and this a great way to brush up before you play a round. Further details of the packages will be announced shortly. We were delighted to see the Majlis course regaining the top spot as the best course in the Middle East in the recent Golf Digest course rankings. The course was also voted as number one in the readers’ choice award which is testament to the hard work put in by Craig and the Golf Course Maintenance team. Dubai Golf also had a very successful evening at the 59 Club Annual Awards, which took place last week at The Grove in London. Dubai Golf was presented with the Golf Group of the Year and Emirates Golf Club was presented with a Gold Flag Award, Cian Hurley was presented with an individual award for the Leading Golf Membership Performance for 2017. Thank you Barney Coleman Club Manager

30th Anniversary Party: Club Manager’s Speech The ‘Desert Miracle’ opened 30 years ago today on 8th March 1988 under the guidance and vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. I am confident that all those who gathered on that landmark day would be proud to know that three decades later 200 members (representing 26 nationalities) competed today in our Anniversary Golf Day over the Majlis and Faldo courses with 800 members and their guests assembled within our iconic Bedouin tent designed clubhouse. Many of you here this evening have been members for multiple years with 18 founder members still holding an active membership today. Standing proudly in front of you as Club Manager today, I have to say that the view from here is breathtaking, a vibrant clubhouse with the Dubai Marina back drop and I urge you all tonight to relish the experience as we celebrate our great club. As always at Emirates Golf Club the evening is action packed with an address by Captain Ivan Fornazaric followed by some important presentations including the acknowledgment of our founder members here tonight. CEO Chris May will say a few words and Captains for the 2019-2020 season will be announced. Golf day winners from today will be awarded, and our long serving colleagues (the heartbeat of the operation) will be recognised for their loyalty and dedication. The traditional auction and raffle will take place followed by fireworks and entertainment.. Last year I recalled some of the highlights of the previous season. If I were to even contemplate recalling the highlights over the past 30 years, for sure it would be a long night of speeches… and you will be relieved to hear I won’t be doing that.. Emirates Golf Club has always been a leader of the region, a pioneer - we are all proud of our history and we are also motivated to not stand still but to build on the legacy that is Emirates Golf Club We are very thankful to our owners wasl Asset Management who took ownership in 2008. Under the guidance of H.E Hesham Al Quassim (CEO of wasl) and Mustafa Al HAshimi (Chief Hospitality and Leisure Officer, wasl) we have seen dynamic growth with a further peak in the past six months. The investment in the Food and Beverage operation has been extensive and we thank all members for your patience since the summer as we have listened to your feedback and introduced welcome

changes to the facilities. Spike Bar moving upstairs plus the addition of Jones the Grocer have been well received and we eagerly anticipate the official launch of Carine from 18th March under the guidance and expertise of Chef Izu. The official opening of Carine is Sunday 18th March but I am pleased to announce that our members can book from 12th to 17th March and that you can avail of an opening week special of 50% discount as opposed to your standard 25%. Thank you to wasl for your pioneering approach; night golf was introduced to the Faldo course in 2010 and we look forward to an exciting future as we open the first Top Golf facility in the Middle East in quarter four of 2019. I would like to finish with a few further thank yous, most importantly to you the membership… Dubai is a dynamic city full of busy individuals with family and leisure time seemingly in shorter supply. We thank you for choosing and supporting Emirates Golf Club to spend your valuable leisure time. A member once told me that Dubai for them evolved around family, work and Emirates Golf Club which highlighted to me the importance of the club (a second home) and the responsibility of my team to constantly provide the experience you deserve. We will endeavour to maintain and surpass this standard. I would like to thank our Captains, Ivan, Najla, Paul and Sulafa plus the Members’

Congratulations to our new Club Champions,

Arkesh Bhatia & Viv Caley

Consultative Committee for your hard work and dedication. With today being International Ladies’ Day, a special mention must go to our ladies’ section who once again reinforced their claim as the biggest and best ladies’ section in golf throughout the region and beyond. One of the season’s highlights witnessed over 100 members compete in the Pink Ball golf day with AED 118,000 being raised for Breast Cancer awareness… well done to Najla and Sulafa for leading the ladies’ section in typical Dubai fashion...with innovation and passion. Our members’ magazine, Club Life, encapsulates the soul and community at Emirates Golf Club… a wise member once told me that to be happy you need health, passion, dreams, meaningful work, and a community of like-minded individuals ..we have this in abundance and thank you to our Club Life editor and founder member Jacqui Barry for recording this each month and bringing it to life through script and colour. My last thank you is to my team of 312 colleagues and their families. I would like to thank each of you for your dedication, passion and endless hours for making Emirates Golf Club such an iconic club. Additionally we have the husbands, wives, partners of many colleagues here tonight, I know that time with your loved ones is sacrificed due to the demands of the operation so thank you for your loyalty and support - it is hugely appreciated.

was out of Dubai for half the month of February, missing some of the tournaments in the club. Congratulations to all the winners - there were some amazing scores.

Golf is a gentleman’s game but during February, a few members approached me and expressed concerns and doubts over some members not playing off the correct handicaps, which is the result of them not having posted the correct scores after their rounds of golf (i.e. submitting scores higher than what they actually had). I believe that in some cases unfortunately, they might be right. There have been some results, especially in the team events, such as scrambles, that have been amazingly low. At the same time, we have honest winners who are competing fairly whom we we have to congratulate. As per our handicap system, every round should be registered and should be registered correctly. There is nobody really checking what scores you put in - it is up to you and down to your own honesty and integrity and everybody believes that you will enter the score you actually had. I will try my best to take this up with Club officials and with the EGF as well, to monitor the handicaps more rigidly and to be stricter with the misuses and manipulating of the handicap system…in other words, cheating! I have also noticed during my captaincy that, for the same reason, some members unfortunately do not play club competitions. We would like to see everybody play Monthly Medals and other club individual competitions.

Anyway, let us celebrate; we are celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Emirates Golf Club with a big members’ party on 8th March. Celebrating 30 years of the golf club, especially in the Gulf and the Middle East, is wonderful. We should be proud of our club; it’s one of the oldest ones in the area, having been the first ever grass course; it’s recognised all over the world, and it is by far the best club. It is great being somewhere in Europe, USA or elsewhere, mentioning Emirates Golf Club Dubai and people have heard about it and, of course, the Dubai Desert Classic as well. The owners of the club are investing a lot of money with the refurbishment of all the restaurants and other facilities and I would like to sincerely thank them for this. At the same time I hope the club retains its feel of being a club for members. The only negative thing that we, the members, would like to see in the future, is to avoid building the hospitality chalets for the Dubai Ladies Classic and the Dubai Desert Classic, blocking the view from and to our beautiful clubhouse. I am preparing for my Captain’s Day on 16th February - hopefully I can add a few yards to my drive. Please sign up for this as I’m sure it will be a great day and…. I have a few surprises for you. ongratulations to Arkesh Bhatia on becoming the Men’s Club Champion. With two days of competition over the Faldo and Majlis courses, Arkesh scored rounds of 68 and 76 to post a score of 144, which was matched by Mike Mezei in an incredibly exciting finish! Both players were tied coming down the final hole and, after hitting a wedge shot close and holing the putt, Arkesh found himself in the lead by one stroke. However Mike, the experienced competitor that he is, found himself with a long-distance, two-putt birdie attempt to tie the game. This month, although short, has seen a big number of tournaments and activities around the club. The weather is still lovely and playing our course is pure pleasure. We started our Monday competitions with a friendly, yet unusual stableford format game, Three Blind Mice! Three holes are selected randomly from the course and nobody knows which have been selected. At the end of the round, the scores from those holes are removed from the total. The 15 holes that remain are added up to create the Three Blind Mice score! It was great fun and only frustrating if you happen to play well on the selected holes and not the opposite as was my case! We then bid farewell during the lunch and prize presentation to one of our members, Dr. Zarina Chinchanwala, who left Dubai to live in the UK to be close to her son and his family. We will miss Zarina and her husband Abbas. We wish them all the best.

lavish breakfast on their beautiful terrace. We were very spoiled by their generous hospitality, warm welcome and impeccable service. Moreover, we were very impressed by the incredible array of delicious food choices that their breakfast buffet offers. On 15th February, over 60 ladies joined in for Lynne Dickinson’s farewell golf game and lunch! We all had a lovely morning that continued until late into the afternoon for some! We will miss Lynne who is a very popular lady member and a huge supporter of our ladies’ section. She has also been very involved in the Omega Dubai Ladies Classic and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic where for years she has efficiently and tirelessly assisted in managing the volunteers who marshal in both events. We wish Lynne and Dicky all the best on their new adventure.

Lastly, on a rainy and stormy Sunday morning we played our first round of the Club Championship on the Faldo. From day one, and despite the harsh conditions, Viv Caley took the lead with an unbelievable 78 (gross) with Mitsuko Emmerson, Naima Maya and Martha Wong trailing behind. On the second day Mitsuko and Naima built up the pressure, closing the gap on the front 9. However, Viv brilliantly managed to keep her calm and her lead until the end! It was a tough battle that saw Viv triumph with a six points lead to clinch the trophy. Well done to Naima and Mistsuko who gave a great fight and ended up in second and third places respectively. Congratulations to our new Champion Viv Caley and to all the winners on the day! The coming month promises to be incredibly busy with, our club’s 30th Anniversary as well as Captain’s Day on 16th March and Lady Captain’s Day on 19th March. We truly hope that you will all be able to join these events which we will strive to make memorable.

Farewell to Zarina & Abbas

On the 12th February we played our Monthly Medal on the Faldo and we are fortunate to now have our new sponsors on board, Palazzo Versace! EMIRATES GOLF CLUB UNDER CONSTRUCTION

I

t was in 1988 that His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-president and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, began his radical expansion plans for the region, including the construction and subsequent opening of Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis Course. Today the club sports two of the city’s finest must-play courses, including the Faldo course, which is also the only 18-hole course in the region to offer night golf. Both courses combine the natural rolling desert terrain for a serious golfing test, while the signature clubhouse in the shape of Bedouin tents, remains the most eyecatching in the region. Tagged the ‘desert miracle’, over its 30-year history; Emirates Golf Club has welcomed many of the world’s top players who have competed in the European Tour sanctioned Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

EMIRATES GOLF CLUB PRESENT DAY The inaugural Dubai Desert Classic in 1989 saw professional golf played in the Emirate for the first time on the Majlis Course, and the Karl Litten designed masterpiece has been the foundation for the tournament to grow in stature and become one of the leading events on the European Tour International Schedule. The Majlis Course has been presented with numerous accolades over its 30-year history, the most recent of which in 2018 are: • Best Golf Course in the Middle East Emirates Golf Club, Majlis course - Golf Digest • Best Golf Course in the Middle East Readers Choice, Emirates Golf Club, Majlis course - Golf Digest • Cian Hurley – Leading Golf Membership Performance 2017 • Gold Flag Award 2018 Did you know… Designer Florida-based Karl Litten’s main aim and ambition for the Majlis was to preserve as much of the land’s natural character, with numerous patches of desert and natural vegetation that are consistent with this terrain. Majlis course record… The course record of 61 is held by Ernie Els (in 1994), three-time winner of the Dubai Desert Classic. Flora, desert and water… The Majlis course features hundreds of indigenous species of flora and fauna, beautifully complemented by meandering fairways and seven fresh and saltwater lakes that come into play on 10 holes. Commemorative book launched to mark club’s Silver Anniversary In 2013 Emirates Golf Club and Motivate Publishing released Rodney J. Bogg’s much-awaited book ‘The Desert Miracle’, marking the occasion of the golf clubs’s 25th anniversary. Rod Bogg was the first General Manager of Emirates Golf Club.

Congratulatory Messages from Club Captains on the 30th Anniversary of Emirates Golf Club

The very first society formed at the club was called The Desert Rats, headed by a King Rat which consisted of 12 members only and who met for golf and dinner once a month, raising money to purchase electric wheelchairs for handicapped children in UK. In those days the international snooker players used to come to Dubai to play in a Dubai Duty Free sponsored snooker championship, at the end of which they would play golf against the Rats and join them for dinner after the game. They called themselves the Rat Catchers!

Dubai Desert Classic winner, Fred Couples who came into the Spike Bar after his round and rang the bell to buy drinks for everyone there.

Congratulations to Emirates Golf Club on reaching your 30th Anniversary. Where have all the years gone...and the original members and colleagues? To be First Lady Captain (88-90) was a great privilege but I also had the added challenges of assisting with setting up our golf section from scratch! It has been wonderful to witness the ongoing growth and development of our club, making it, in my opinion, the best by far in the MENA region. Well done!

Congratulations to Emirates Golf Club on your 30 year milestone! What great memories!

Dare I say...Ian Walton again!!!

I remember during our Thursday fourball one of our members, David Clark was driving the golf cart with me as co pilot. On the fourth hole he hit his tee shot into the lake; he drove the cart to the side of the lake and went forward to look for his ball while I proceeded to the green. The cart obviously did not have the brake on so it continued moving and in no time it was submerged in the lake. We retrieved his bag, called for another golf cart and we continued our game . The next morning the lads were queuing at reception for the Friday competition but one member was carrying a snorkel and mask and I asked if he was going diving with his children later. He said, “No, I’m sharing a golf cart with David Clark!” Since I left the club I know there have been many celebrities visiting but even in the early days, before Dubai was the destination hotspot it is today, we had a number of celebrities there…the King of Nepal, King of Malaysia, Jasper Carrot, Russ Abbott, Nigel Mansell, Jackie Stewart, Tim Brook-Taylor, Maggie Thatcher, Bobby Charlton and Frank Carson who, when playing, continued to tell jokes all the time except when he was hitting a shot and he did not repeat one of the afternoon jokes at the dinner in the evening. He even presented me with a pencil golf bag with an inscription on it, “STOLEN From FRANK CARSON”

Congratulations Emirates Golf Club on reaching your 30th Anniversary! From your inception (and many thought it was impossible!) you have grown so much in stature worldwide and you certainly put Dubai on the golfing map. We had such fun there and the facilities were second to none. So many things have changed in Dubai that it’s really lovely to watch golf and recognise all the holes albeit with a lot more greenery than in the early days! I was privileged to be Lady Captain there and it was an experience I thoroughly enjoyed. I was also fortunate to have Alf Johnson as the Men’s Captain during the year of my captaincy. I’m sure we all remember Alf’s legendary skill as a raconteur......he dearly loved to tell us stories and jokes - you name it. Sadly, due to a stroke 16 years ago, his speech didn’t recover though typically he remains in good spirits. The way we were.......

It is difficult to praise too highly the decision by the Royal Family to give Dubai a world class golf course with input provided by a number of suitably qualified personnel at all levels, to give us the magnificent club we have today. This is pioneering at its best. Many have tried to copy, but few have achieved the degree of excellence exhibited at Emirates Golf Club. I am proud to have had the honour of being Club Captain in 1990-91, (the only year there was no Desert Classic due to the Gulf War.) In the intervening years friends have come and gone but Emirates Golf Club is still here, still improving and still a market leader. Congratulations to all involved, past and present.

The vast majority of members enjoying a round on the Majlis Course today cannot imagine the impact that this course had on those of us lucky enough to become founder members of the club in 1988. It was being built on land way out of Dubai as we knew it, and word was that no-one would drive that far for a game of golf. How wrong they were! From the outset it was a miracle and every year we watched as it expanded and its reputation grew, firstly among the sand courses in the Emirates and then the wider world, initially bringing the golfers on the British Caledonian tour and then the European Tour itself! It is rightly one of their favourite venues, and I was very privileged to have been the fifth Lady Captain. Mike and I are looking forward to joining you all on 8th March to celebrate 30 years of this great Club.

Congratulations to Emirates Golf Club on its 30th anniversary. The opening of the club was highly anticipated and it did not disappoint from a golf course point of view or on the dining front. If you look at an aerial photograph taken at the time, the green course is in stark contrast to the desert surrounding it and then the sea, and there are no buildings in between. I remember the opening ceremony in March 1988. The world champion UAE parachute team landed in front of the dignitaries with one carrying a gold-shafted driver. All seven Crown Princes of the UAE were present along with four top golf professionals while the first official shot was hit by the then President of Pakistan. It was quite an event. I was Captain of Emirates Golf Club in 1995/6 and have very fond memories of that time and we still regularly host Dubai Duty Free tournaments there. In fact we had the very first Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup at the Club, which attracted 24 executives from the duty free industry. I remember acting as tour guide on the way to the course but there was very little to see between the Metropolitan Hotel and the course, so it was an easy job. I was also Captain of Dubai Creek Golf Club in 2007 and by coincidence my Captain’s Day drive at Emirates Golf Club and my Captain’s drive-in at the Creek were both on January 5th. The only difference was that in 1996 my drive was over 250 yards and I scored 76 or 77 in the tournament. In 2007 my drive was 160 yards and my score was 92, I think something bad must have happened to technology in the meantime!

On the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of Emirates Golf Club, it gives me great pleasure to extend my best wishes to the management, members and colleagues. As the first grass golf course in the Middle East it is now known worldwide and has hosted the best golfers in the world .The club is truly an amazing success. Every moment spent at Emirates Golf Club has been a special memory for me. Best wishes and congratulations.

I would like to wish Emirates Golf Club many congratulations on reaching its 30th Anniversary. I just wish we could be over there to celebrate with all of you on what will be a special occasion at a special club with some very special members and colleagues.

30 years of Emirates Golf Club! Where did the time go? We joined as soon as the club opened (even though I didn’t play golf then) and what a great decision that was way back then. I wonder if we would have stayed in Dubai as long as we have if it had not been for the club. It has served as our ‘hub’ for golfing and socialising and, over the course of the 30 years we have made so many good friends, many of whom left a long time ago but they became lifelong friends. When I think of all the fun times, the many fantastic colleagues, the excellent facilities and the great golfing moments, I consider myself to be so fortunate to have been part of this great journey of 30 years... from the ‘patch’ of green in the middle of nowhere at that time, to the magnificent, world-acclaimed club that it is today. Congratulations to everyone who has been involved in this incredible 30-year journey of the ‘Desert Miracle’. I feel so very proud of the club and especially to have been Lady Captain during this time.

Happy 30th Anniversary to Emirates Golf Club and congratulations to you all. The amazing accomplishments, always producing high standards in service with warmth and always with a smile and patience. When we return to Emirates Golf Club just for a short visit, we are always overwhelmed with the friendliness and kindness we receive from dear friends, members and colleagues. It could only happen there; it is, and always has been, a very special place where people meet in the gym, for a coffee or at a golf competition and end up life-long friends. To have been chosen as Captains was a great honour and I really enjoyed the experience immensely. All the wonderful memories that occurred over the years are simply indescribable We simply love the place and we miss the camaraderie of spirit that it embodies. Thank you Emirates Golf Club for making our life in Dubai a much better place - we are forever grateful … and here’s wishing you continued success for the next 30 years.

Happy Anniversary to all colleagues and members of Emirates Golf Club. We have fantastic memories and it is always a privilege to visit the club as founder and life member and feel welcomed by everyone.

It was the ‘mirage in the desert’ 30 years ago and now it’s the ‘jewel’ in the Middle East. 30 years of pleasure it has given, not only to us golfers in Dubai but in the Middle East, Europe and indeed, the world. Memories of times and people (members and colleagues) are too numerous to mention but we’ve all had great time in this wonderful club of which it has been a privilege to be a member.

I was actually at the opening of Emirates Golf Club in 1988. I remember the fanfare of Sheikh Mohammed arriving and the parachutists coming down from the planes delivering a golden driver to the late President of Pakistan, Zia Ul-Haq. It was a glorious day and I will remember it forever. There are so many fabulous memories but most of all the club’s trust when they appointed me Lady Captain in 2001. It was a great honour and I will treasure my time, at least 20 years, of being a member of Emirates Golf Club. I also had the honour of winning a few tournaments in the UAE but most of all the Ladies’ Club Championship in 2002. We had wonderful times with the New Year’s parties, the fabulous dinners and dances, the tennis and squash tournaments, the superb gym and the wonderful, wonderful staff who served our needs. I met some fabulous ladies and, and of course, nothing can replace marshaling at the Dubai Desert Classic. I was there watching when the four top Pros started with a drive at the same time as the opening; we mixed and mingled with the best players in the world......there will never be another place or memory like this for me. Even though I am now Lady Captain at my humble course here in Trinidad, it can’t ever compare to Emirates Golf Club. Thank you all so very much for all you did for me and my family. I wish you all many many more happy anniversaries....wish I could be there to celebrate with you all.” Good luck with your celebrations...I will be with you all in mind and spirit.

Congratulations Emirates Golf Club!

Congratulations to Emirates Golf Club on its 30th anniversary. I have heard from so many people that the club is unique and I would have to agree wholeheartedly. It offers everything you would want in a club - great courses, wonderful staff, an iconic clubhouse, a range of excellent facilities and very enthusiastic members. My years as a member were most enjoyable and I always look forward to visiting as a life member.

I would like to take this opportunity on this 30 Year Anniversary to pass on my congratulations to all current and past members, management and colleagues of Emirates Golf Club Having recently watched the Desert Classic on the Golf Channel it is clear to see and evident that Emirates Golf Club and, in particular, the Majlis course, has continued to weather the test of time maintaining its prestige as not only the best course in the Gulf, but measuring strongly against others on the European Tour. On this 30th Anniversary I cannot help but focus back recalling so many great memories, whether it be playing friendly Thursday fourballs with cherished friends, competitive rounds in numerous events or the very ‘social gatherings’ that the club so masterfully planned and staged. It is a great atmosphere for the entire family and our family was fortunate, like so many of you, to share it together. Truly a unique and cherished club atmosphere for all to share, creating lasting memories and friendships for a lifetime. For those who attend the 30th Anniversary, the management and colleagues, enjoy this occasion and let it be one more of your great memories from a very special club. Judy and I wish you all the very best.

Congratulations to Emirates Golf Club on its 30th Anniversary. With its friendly atmosphere everybody is made to feel welcome. For me the club makes Dubai one of the best places in the world to live. I spend a lot of time there and I love our fantastic ladies’ section. Wishing Emirates Golf Club all the best for the years to come.

Mick Brett 2005-2006

Wow 30th Anniversary - doesn’t time go quickly? In all my time at Emirates Golf Club I have so many great memories, one just being the Captain of a great club and a very special Captain’s Day with the girls dressed in St Trinian’s outfits serving the drinks between the 9th and 18th green. (Jacqui Barry, Joan Legnar, Michelle Cotton, Cherry Ward and Maria Carrigy) Along with this other highlights include winning the Club Championship and being presented with the trophy by the late Captain Ashok Bakshi and playing in the Pro-Am with Lee Westwood and Jim Davidson. I could go on for ever as there are so many memories and I met so many wonderful people there

Congratulations on the 30th Anniversary. It is a testimony to the vision of the management and staff that, despite the increase in number of golf clubs, Emirates Golf Club still remains the premier club in the region. The club has gone through many changes over the years and continues to look fresh and maintain the ‘wow’ factor. Well done on maintaining excellent high standards over the last 30 years.

We’ve had the privilege of being members since the club opened in 1988 and I have so many happy memories of wonderful times spent there. I had my first golf lesson with James Williams when Adrian Flaherty was an assistant pro and there were probably 15 of us in the ladies’ section - things have changed a little since then! However, it’s still the same warm, welcoming, fun environment which is what makes our club so special and unique. Many congratulations on the 30th Anniversary of this great club.

The highlight of my Captaincy year was having Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam win the Desert Classic and Ladies Masters respectively. The fact that they were both World No 1 at the time just underlined how prestigious the club had become in such a short span of time and how Emirates Golf Club had led the way for the amazing growth of golf in the region. From a personal perspective, I am sure all Lady Captains will agree that we have the most wonderful group of lady members, who have been great supporters of the club, providing wonderful companionship and lasting friendships.

I joined Emirates Golf Club as one of its very first members 30 years ago. I was starting to learn to play golf back then, and now, I am still learning how to get a hole-in-one. As Captain, I enjoyed hosting several dignitaries and meeting the nicest people on the golf course. I still remember my very first day at the club. It was a feeling of awe seeing a field of grass in the middle of the desert. Seeing the club now hosting superstar golfers in the midst of a bustling city, makes one realise how time flies. Many things have changed yet the very same feeling of camaraderie among members is what makes the club very special to me. My sincere appreciation to the management, the junior colleagues and all members of the club for making 30 years of Emirates Golf Club truly exceptional - a world class golf course that is bound for greater heights. Congratulations!

Elise Hanson 2008-2009

Congratulations to Emirates Golf Club for 30 years of great golf in Dubai and in the UAE. It was an honour to have been Lady Captain of such a great club. The ladies’ section is probably the best in the world and has a great togetherness. Throughout the whole club the camaraderie would be hard to beat. Thank you Emirates Golf Club for making life more fun.

Congratulations to the management and colleagues of Emirates Golf Club for 30 years as the # 1 golf facility in the region. It has been a privilege to have been a member of this fantastic operation and I look forward to many more years of enjoyment and friendship.

It was a privilege to be nominated Lady Captain of our prestigious Emirates Golf Club. I felt exceptionally honoured to be given a second chance after I turned down the first offer due to family commitments.

Best wishes for the future and heartfelt thanks to all who have made us feel welcome over the years.

I started off not knowing what to expect or what was expected of me. As it turned out, with the tremendous support of club management and all my fellow golfers in the ladies’ section, I came through with some of best memories of my life.

2009-2010

2009-2010

The fact that we were without a proper clubhouse for most part of the year as it went through a major renovation did not dampen my Captaincy in the least. In 17 years as a member of Emirates Golf Club, I have witnessed significant changes as the club has grown from strength to strength. As we celebrate the 30th Anniversary, I wish the club continued success under the capable care of its professional management team and colleagues.

Having been part of the journey from the start I suppose it is inevitable that my abiding memory is from the opening event when Zia Al Huq , the President of Pakistan, was handed a golden driver to play the first shot, delivered to him by a parachutist, and he promptly shanked his shot! Nonetheless the Majlis was well and truly opened and I offer all who have been involved in the journey, whatever the length, my warmest congratulations on our 30th Anniversary.

Unfortunately I will be unable to attend the party but I am sure that the club will host a fantastic evening of celebration. Where does one start to describe the best of 30 years of life at Emirates Golf Club? Was it the competition golf up against a youngster called Ross Bain who went on to be the first player from Emirates Golf Club to join the touring professional ranks? Was it the team events? To play for Europe in the Talker Cup and to play in a Scotland shirt in the Tri-Nations was such an honour and a privilege. Was it my first of three holes-in-one? Was it playing in Ladies’ and Men’s Pro Ams with top European stars? Was it the memory of playing with legendary Manchester United player Ryan Giggs? Was it the memory of walking into the Men’s locker room during an early Desert Classic to find one of golf’s greatest, Seve Ballesteros in his underpants and a vest doing sits ups on the floor? Was it the honour of being appointed Club Captain in 20112012? Was it having special friends like the late Mike Gerbich? Actually the best memory is of the many hundreds of wonderful people, colleagues and members alike that I have befriended over the years. A big thank you to everyone who made my time special at Emirates Golf Club and the best of wishes for the next 30 years!

Emirates Golf Club has been a premium golfing destination, not only in the UAE, but also in the Middle East over the last many years, and each and every person associated with the club is privileged to be in that position. I have been a member for about 10 years or so, and it is more than a second home for Rena and myself. We enjoy the club, the company of the playing members and we also enjoy entertaining our guests on the premises from time to time. All those who visit the club are in awe of the splendid facilities and surroundings that exist in the heart of Dubai at Emirates Golf Club. The team of David Formas, Sandra Chia, Glory Xavier and Maureen Platt finished a mere 0.2 strokes further back.

A

s part of Emirates Golf Club’s 30th Anniversary cerebrations the club took on the challenge of playing the quickest round of golf in history over the Majlis course. With the current record, according to Guinness World Records, standing at 13 minutes and 42 seconds, the team had their work cut out. The strategy to get around the course in the quickest time possible was to have our golf professionals hit tee shots and approach shots into each hole, leaving the putting and chipping to members.

As well as the team prizes that were up for grabs during the tournament, there were also numerous on-course special events, the main prize being AED 30,000 for any player having a hole-in-one on either the 15th on the Majlis or the 17th on the Faldo. Unfortunately there were no holes-in-one on the day so the prize was raffled. Selected from the raffle drum by our longest serving colleague at the club, Neri Battung, the eventual lucky winner was Kamal Kosta.

Beginning a little after 11.00am the opening tee shot was hit by Head Golf Professional Stephen Deane, and the challenge was under way. With everyone moving in perfect synchronisation the challenge began with ease, and the front 9 was quickly completed in a mere 39 strokes, with some very good golf being played under severe time constraints. It continued in the same fashion into the back nine, even with the odd birdie being made.

Other special events included Beat the Pros on both courses, with Rajesh Sethi and Bipin Bhatia beating the Pros on the Faldo course, and Michael Kaye winning both on the Majlis course. Nearest the pins were also up for grabs on each course, and on the Faldo (hole #8) it was Gaurav Verma and on the Majlis (hole #7) it was Renuka Sood claiming the prizes.

A little after 11.20am, the challenge was complete. With a team of 30 players, a round of golf over the Majlis course was completed in 21 minutes 39 seconds, in 83 strokes. Not quite the Guinness World Record that was hoped for, but a UAE record was settled for!

On hole 12 on the Majlis it was the longest drive challenge where there were prizes for men and ladies. The longest driver amongst the ladies on the Majlis was Naima Maya (211yards) and Arjun Manghnani (311yards) for the men. The same challenge was played over on the Faldo (hole #16), in which Glory Xavier (226yards) and Paul Donovan (329yards) were the biggest hitters.

greens and unique style bunkering amongst its various features. The front nine offers a par-3 with an island green while the closing holes are built around a quarry and a large lake with massive rock formations. Strategy is the key to successfully negotiating the course, which can play very differently depending on the tees you play from. Golfers can choose to play from six different tees – Gold, Black, Blue, White, Red and Yellow.

The Arnold Palmer course at the DLF Golf & Country Club was opened in 1999, and is the first AP signature course in the country. The 9-hole parkland style design, is floodlit and is the first to offer night golf. The par-36 course features gently sloping fairways and deceptively contoured greens. The true Palmer style design is a challenge to play on for golfers of all levels. Golfers may play from Black, Blue, White, Red and Yellow tees.

The DLF Golf Academy is the first professional golf school in the country. The Academy was opened in 1999 and over the last decade and a half has been instrumental in providing golf instruction to most of the DLF Golf Club members, juniors, corporates and to many top amateurs and professionals in the country. A panel of highly trained instructors teach golf in a structured manner, yet cater to needs of every individual golfer. The instructors recognise that students learn golf for a variety of reasons and the pace of learning is unique to each student. Programs are designed to suit all levels of golfers. The Academy has a panel of six highly qualified golf instructors. All instructors are certified by the National Golf Academy of India, and come with more than 15 years of teaching experience. The team specialises in junior programmes, and in the use of golf teaching technology for all levels of golfers

INTERVIEW WITH

tom barry

Where are you from?

I was born in Dublin, Ireland and I spent all my youth and teens there, only leaving after I graduated from University College Dublin as a civil engineer

Tell me a bit about your family

I met my lovely wife Jacqui here in Dubai over thirty years ago, playing squash, believe it or not. We got married here, had the reception at the club and we have lived here ever since. Our son Ross was born here in February 1992 and he went to Dubai English Speaking School and Dubai College, after which he went to Edinburgh University, graduating with an honours degree in Economics and he now works in London. Jacqui is a very good and enthusiastic golfer; in her youth she was an International basketball player and she swam and played hockey at County level.

Williams Ross & Robbie

We travel a lot and we really enjoy our lifestyle, especially since I retired over seven years ago. Dublin, Singapore, Mauritius Maldives and the Seychelles are some firm favourites and of course, we love being in Portugal, our other home, where we a have wonderful house; we have made many friends at Quinta do Lago Golf Club where we are members - another life!

playing with my younger brother Kevin upstairs in our house. It was summer and hot so all the windows were open; we were messing about on a window seat upstairs when he gave me a push and I fell out of the window onto the path below! Luckily I only broke my arm!!

What is your professional background?

I graduated as a civil engineer in 1970 and I immediately went to work in England, becoming one of the ‘McAlpine’s Fusiliers’ as we were called, working for Sir Robert McAlpine. Whilst I was there I met a person called Riad Kamal who persuaded me, in 1976, to come to Dubai as he was forming a construction company called Arabtec. So, I did and through ups and downs, we built Arabtec into one of the biggest construction companies in the region, employing 52,000 people in the early 2000s. We were the first construction company to go public, launched on the Dubai Stock Exchange in 2005 when I was CEO with Riad as Chairman. During my time with Arabtec we built some very prestigious buildings, like the Emirates Palace Hotel, the Cayan Tower in the Marina (which twists through 90 degrees through its height) but the real feather in our cap was building the Burj Khalifa which we built as a joint venture. This was a five-year world beating project, on completion of which I retired in 2010

What did you enjoy in Dubai in the early years of your time here? From 1976 until the 1990s life in Dubai was all about home entertainment, dinner parties and generally just having the ‘craic’. I think the ‘craic’ was much better and life was less stressful in the earlier years. We had more fun!

What is your earliest childhood memory? One that sticks out in my mind is when I was about six years of age and I was

Other than golf, what sports have you participated in? Golf has been a major sporting interest for me since I first took it up at the age of 12. I had a few enforced breaks from it due to work and I did not even start to play in Dubai until around 1985. At that time

we played on sand golf courses, hitting our shots off little squares of astroturf… providing the ball was on the fairway. There were no greens, rather ‘browns’ which were formed by compacting sand mixed with oil. Interesting and amazing! 1979 Exiles Rugby Club tour to Sri Lanka

Other sporting interests have been rugby which I played at school, University and in Dubai too when we played on sand pitches. I did a lot of sailing which I took up in Dubai in the early years and I became Commodore of Jebel Ali Sailing Club which has now ceased to exist. I used to run, mostly with the Hash House Harriers and I also played squash which I did for many of the early years in the Dubai Squash Leagues (where I met Jacqui as she played in the men’s squash leagues back then).

When did you join Emirates Golf Club?

I joined the club as soon as it opened in 1988. We golfers couldn’t wait to play golf on grass after persevering on sand for a number of years. Mind you, we thought they were stark raving mad to build the course so far out of the city (then!) as it was in the middle of nowhere. Now look at it surrounded by residential areas and high rise buildings. Incredible!

How much has Emirates Golf Club changed in 30 years?

As a golf course the layout has hardly changed, maybe just a few different bunkers here and there BUT the big difference has been the maturing of all the trees and vegetation which has made the golf course much more difficult than in the early days. The clubhouse though has changed with additions made to the original structure with a few interior refurbishments. The latest ones are probably the best as we finally have a spike bar and terrace overlooking the course and in particular, the 9th and 18th holes. It’s still a home from home for me (and for Jacqui) and when we are in Dubai, we spend a lot of time (and money) there.

What is your best and most memorable golf shot you have played?

Only one shot comes to mind and it has to be my hole-in-one on the 15th at Valderrama. Eight of us from the club were on a golf trip in Spain and all eight witnessed my shot onto the green and into the hole 205 yards away. There was champagne all around afterwards…it doesn’t happen very often.

What have been your golfing highlights over the years?

Now that’s a difficult question! I played well enough a few years ago to have my handicap down to 6.9 - my lowest ever, but now it’s 10.5 and probably going up more! I have won some tournaments along the way but I have never won a Medal at Emirates Golf Club (although I did in

Other enjoyable highlights have been playing in the many Talker Cups at the club which is our version or the Ryder Cup, featuring Europe v North America. We have had many good times with this fun, yet

competitive tournament played between friends, mostly from our Saturday group. The biggest achievement however, and a major highlight in my life was to have been appointed Club Captain of Emirates Golf Club 2001-2002. It was a huge honour and I really enjoyed the year. It does seem a long time ago now but I’ll never forget it. No wonder I just love Emirates Golf Club!

35 ofile

That is definitely Augusta although I have never played it. Jacqui and I have been US Masters with Mike & to the US Masters Francie Gerbich three times and we just love that event. It has got to be the best golf tournament in the world and, believe it or not, it is so easy to see the golf and walk around the course.

Portugal last autumn). The most enjoyable win for me has got to be winning the Dubai World Championship Pro-Am (Race to Dubai) playing with Mike Sim and Mike Tracey with Padraig Harrington as our Pro. What a wonderful day!

Playing the Wrong Ball

P

laying the wrong ball (Rule 15-3) in golf is a simple mistake but a costly error. However, the good news is that you can avoid any penalties by following the simple recommendation below.

Ultimately, it is the player’s responsibility to play the correct ball. To assist you and your playing partners, the rules of golf recommend that you put a unique identification mark on your golf ball before commencing play. Despite the above R&A recommendation, this rule is broken time and time again across fairways around the globe and a player who breaches this rule will be penalised as follows.

MATCHPLAY

• If a player makes a stroke at a wrong ball, he loses the hole. • If the wrong ball belongs to another player, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played. • If the player and opponent exchange balls during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at a wrong ball loses the hole; when this cannot be determined, the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.

A

STROKEPLAY

• If a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two strokes. • The competitor must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or by proceeding under the Rules. • If he fails to correct his mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground or, in the case of the last hole of the round, fails to declare his intention to correct his mistake before leaving the putting green, he is disqualified. • Strokes made by a competitor with a wrong ball do not count in his score. If the wrong ball belongs to another competitor, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played. Please note that as an exception to this rule, there is no penalty if a competitor makes a stroke at a wrong ball that is moving in water within a water hazard. Any strokes made at a wrong ball that is moving in water within a water hazard do not count in the player’s score. If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply Email your query to rjames@dubaigolf.com

IMPORTANT NOTICE : HANDICAPS!

pologies for mentioning this again but I will keep repeating the message until more members are following the USGA and EGF handicapping guidelines correctly and consistently.

Regardless of handicap/playing ability, ALL games must be registered for either a GENERAL play or a TOURNAMENT score unless playing matchplay, scramble/shamble, playing alone or playing less than seven holes.

We are able to compare the number of games on the Emirates Golf Club tee time booking system against the Golfers Card system to see which members are recording their games. Once games are being registered, we trust that accurate scores are being recorded for both General and Tournament scores. For clarity, we also know that many members are following the guidelines correctly and can disregard this message.

Golf Industry Show in San Antonio

T

his time of year is always a steady time for the GCM team as we focus on keeping conditions consistent through the very busy season that always follows the Dubai Desert Classic Internally we do a lot of training with the team to ensure we stay on top of our skills whist helping with the development of any newcomers to the department. In February I was fortunate to participate at the Golf Industry Show in San Antonio

where I attended some great educational seminars. This year I was asked to present our story to a group of 400 industry professionals which was, without question, the highlight of the trip for me. We forget the interest we have from an outside audience and the engagement during and after the talk was sincere and engaging. As colleagues we are so very proud to work at Emirates Golf Club and in Dubai. As members you too should be immensely proud as, from the outside looking in, this remains one of the most sought after places to be.

we are already proactively looking at areas to improve over the year ahead. Our planning stages for the summer maintenance practices are in full swing and it promises to be another busy year ahead for all.

We had a great Ladies’ and Men’s Club Championship this season and we were proud of how our golf courses presented. The team continue to work in detail and

The Tee It Up Vision

Through partnerships, our aim is to give all children between the ages of 6 and 16 the opportunity to experience golf in school for a sustained period of time through educational programmes.

Mission

The Tee It Up Initiative begins focusing on the age category for children from 6 to 9 years of age named Tee It Up Smash. The programme will provide all schools with the tools and training to activate the game of golf internally by 2020. Teachers and parents will be trained and qualified to activate the game internally through physical education sessions, lunchtime sessions or during after school activity sessions. Parents will play a key role in improving the grass roots culture of the game in the region, learning first hand what it takes to become competitive. The Tee It Up Programme has also developed a programme working with simulators to cater for children aged 10 to 16 named Tee It Up Discover and Tee It Up Enhance. The Tee It Up Discover programme aims to give those children, who may not have ever experienced the game, to give it a try whereas Tee It Up Enhance provides students with the ability to enhance their golfing skills within school environments.

Tee It Up: 10 Core Values

FUN, Equaility, Respect, Teamwork, Leadership, Imagination, Intergrity, Sportsmanship, Confidence, Perseverance.

History

The Tee It Up SMASH model is inspired by the Golf Foundation UK Tri Golf initiative that has been very productive in the UK for a decade. The successful model has generously been shared with the Tee It Up Initiative to grow the game in our region.

Plan

There are currently 183 nationalities studying in 173 private schools. With the support of KHDA we plan to conduct training in 60 schools eventually and to create a minimum of 120 activators per year. The programme will cover all private schools by the year 2020 and will qualify 500 teachers and parents to activate the game creating visibility of the game to a quarter of a million families.

PETE COWEN’S SIGNATURE DRILL ANALYSED IN EXPLICIT DETAIL

This month we’ll look at a Pete Cowen signature drill called ‘Chinese fighting stick!’ It’s a great way to understand the correct hand, arm and club movement during the swing alongside feeling how your body matches this movement. For this drill, you can obviously use Chinese fighting sticks but a flagstick, a pole, a broom handle or anything that is longer than a golf club will still work and will allow you to see and feel the movement. In this article, I’ve used an exercise pole which we like to use with our students.

C

hef Izu Ani and his wife, the eponymous Carine Ani, may be the biggest drawcards of the exciting new venture at Emirates Golf Club, but behind every great restaurant is a charismatic front of house team. Billed as a brasserie-cum-bistro-cum-café-cumboulangerie, the highly-anticipated Carine

opens its doors to the public this month. We meet the friendly faces of the restaurant; as the first (and last) point of contact for guests, they are the ones that make the dining experience. With an ecosystem made up of many components: a charming front-of-house team, shrewd managers, and a motley crew of unstoppable chefs, running a great restaurant will always be stressful.

It’s the role of the guest relations manager, restaurant manager and beverage manager to keep a cool, calm and always-smiling façade and to ensure the atmosphere in the restaurant is just so. Which is why Chef Izu Ani has been at pains to put such a sterling team together. They’re young and they come armed with limitless energy. They also share Izu’s passion and dreams.

It was a feeling that Diana missed when she left to work for another restaurant. “I missed his philosophies, concepts and his food so that’s why I came back.”

personality. It’s all about her tastes, what she likes and what she represents. She’s French, so it has a very French / Mediterranean feel.”

It’s no coincidence that Izu has selected the pretty, bubbly blonde from Transylvania, Romania used to be his Guest Relations Manager. Having originally joined Izu’s opening team as a hostess at La Serre five years ago, Diana says her time working for Izu has been one of her best experiences in Dubai. “It’s not only the way Izu cooks; he’s amazing with the guests and with his staff. He brings soul to a place and as soon as I joined his team I felt like family.

Diana originally studied child psychology, a perfect skill for the hospitality industry. “I think having people skills and being able to interact with all types of people definitely helps in the hospitality industry. I didn’t set out to work in hospitality, but I have the right skills for it and I really enjoy it.” Diana is confident, given both the fantastic location and Izu’s dedicated fan base, that Carine is set to become one of the hottest venues in town. “Izu has a lot of followers and I am used to interacting with them. I’ve welcomed them and served them, so it will be like reuniting with them!” With Chef Izu constantly travelling around the world, he always has fresh ideas for new ventures. “To this project,” says Diana, “he brings Carine, his wife. The most difficult part of her job? “Sometimes dealing with guests is tricky. I’ve been training myself over the years to read the guest and to know how to react in a particular situation. In Dubai you have so many different nationalities so you have to deal with different people in different ways. Every nationality has different characteristics and it’s my job to understand these. It’s all about getting to know them and knowing what pleases them.” Being a naturally friendly person helps, but, she concurs, it all boils down to being nice. “You have to be nice all the time – you don’t get any opportunity not to be nice! Keep smiling and come up with solutions.” Favourite dishes at Carine: “I’ll start with fried calamari, cherry tomatoes and goat’s cheese, tuna carpaccio… I could go on. And then I’ll go for the lobster linguini which is my favourite. And the lamb chop; I’m not really a fan of lamb, but I love it here!”

Costas Sitaridis: Restaurant Manager

Having studied hospitality in Greece, followed by a stint of working in hotels, it was when he began to work with Izu at Le Serre that Costas really got to grips with the art of hospitality.

Costas Andriopoulos: Beverage Manager “I wanted gastronomical cocktails. I want cocktails that go along with Chef Izu’s food. We’re French / Mediterranean so of course we do wine pairings too, but the cocktail pairings are something more unique,” says Beverage Manager Costas – not to be confused with Restaurant Manager Costas.

It’s not just the chef’s great personality that Costas admires. “He’s a good mentor; he’s had a team of people that have been following him in Dubai for many years since he opened La Petite Maison and this means a lot – especially somewhere like Dubai.” But he’s no pushover. Izu can be tough when he needs to in order to keep the team on track.” Aside from the opportunity to work with his mentor, Costas was also blown away by the setting of Carine. “This is a great location. When I first walked out onto this terrace I was wowed. It was a lovely surprise and I knew that it was the perfect location for Izu – especially for Izu’s breakfast! Then again, it’s a very romantic location for dinner too.”

a mix of both Emirates Golf club members and Izu’s loyal followers. Costas worked with the project manager on the French / Mediterranean concept which is based on four pillars: brasserie, bistro, café and boulangerie. Given Carine’s background in a bakery – it was in a bakery in France where the pair first met and fell in love – there is a big focus on bread; there is even a bread corner. Izu also has his own olive oil from Greece– named after the couple’s eldest son Thèo – and diners will get to taste that too.

43 Carine

Costas’ job is to ensure that everything runs like a well-oiled machine – no mean feat considering there are a total of 260 covers including the bar and terrace, with approximately 150 in the restaurant.

“It’s not just about working with Izu, it’s about being with him. He’s such a great person that you admire him even when he’s not there. I feel like I can truly represent him.”

“We use a mix of suppliers from around the world. The most important thing for Izu about the base product is the quality. If the quality is there it’s a lot easier to make something tasty. He would never work with something that he doesn’t like.”

With Carine being an all-day dining spot, the setting and décor are clearly on the mark – “I love the marble finishes” – and Costas is convinced that the place will be buzzing with

Favourite dishes at Carine: I think the whole roasted chicken with foie gras and truffle butter is my favourite for now but I’m sure this will change tomorrow.”

butter, olive oil – ingredients usually reserved for cooking. We want our guests to see how these ingredients can work in cocktails to help bring balance to a meal.”

When it came to selecting the wines – of which there are 60 varieties on the menu which they’ll keep rotating and adding more options to – there were two main points to consider: the pricing strategy and the geographical approach.

The creativity doesn’t stop there. “We also have another section on the menu with barrel aged cocktails, which are aged in French oak barrels so they start to get an oaky flavour. Our third section,” he continues, “is the gin and tonic section. G&T is one of the most famous, classic combinations and you can create lots of variations with it. We have a large range of gins and tonics and use ingredients like candied bergamot, juniper berries, strawberries, vanilla, bitters, celery, rosemary, clove, anise, thyme, basil, spearmint leaves… we took mainly what nature offers us and implement them in our recipes.”

With the focus being on fresh Mediterranean fare, the wine list incorporates a lot of old world wines, moving around the Mediterranean from France to Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. But they’ve also included a few new world options. “A lot of considerations went into the selection, specifically the pricing. We don’t just want to fill the menu with loads of expensive items. We want diners to be able to have an affordable glass of wine that’s of a good quality. We also have fine wines, but we have tried to find really unique ones.”

With no less than 10 signature cocktails on the menu, it would almost be rude not to try one. Of course, if guests want something more classic they’ll oblige, but Costas will try to steer them towards trying one of the signature cocktails.

Having studied and worked in Greece, Costas left his home country specifically for this project and is new to Dubai. “I knew of Chef Izu’s work, his philosophies and the projects that he’s worked on. The fact that I would be working with him was a deciding factor for me moving here. I’m also excited to be involved in a project with Dubai Golf. I like watching golf but not playing it!”

“We use ingredients like homemade syrups, homemade jams – Carine’s homemade pear, apple and plum jam – infused spirits with herbs,

With his philosophy being: “As long as we live, we learn,” Costas says he is training his palate every day.

Favourite dishes at Carine: “The Burrata and the passion fruit cheesecake…”

“I’m so excited to be working here,” says Mustafa. Hailing from a town near Istanbul, Turkey, the passionate barista laughs that coffee is in his blood. “I grew up in a very traditional Turkish family so Turkish coffee was a big part of our lives – it’s the centrepiece of our culture: you have to drink coffee, you have no choice! I drink at least three coffees a day, more if I get the chance.”

But even if you haven’t fallen in love with the dark roasted bean, there are other innovative options to try. “Aside from the coffee I’m also bringing in a couple of my secret recipes, one of which is an all-natural homemade lemonade – my late grandfather’s recipe. It’s made the traditional way and it has a kick! It’s a beautiful sun yellow colour, but without the food colouring. “

The coffee at Carine comes from Ethiopia which Mustafa describes as the most romantic type of coffee as it is “where coffee was discovered.”

The other is the recipe for a detoxifying iced tea. Catering for everyone – as well as their intolerances – Mustafa says: “We have a range of alcohol-free, gluten-free and lactose-free drinks to ensure everyone is happy.”

Mustafa Emre Gugen: Head Barista With a special coffee blend created just for Carine, the venue plans to set a whole new standard when it comes to coffee culture.

Carine even has a signature coffee. “It’s called Blueberry Coffin because it’s a flavour to die for! It’s an award-winning recipe. It tastes like a warm and cosy blueberry muffin in a cup – you’ll fall in love with it.”

So, while the beverage menu offers something for everyone, it’s overall aim is to keep people coming back. “You don’t need expensive, extravagant ingredients like caviar,” insists Costas. ‘Chef Izu tends to simplify things. His approach to simplicity within his recipes is something that fascinates me.”

Carine will be opening at Emirates Golf Club in March.

Dear Members,

F

fit lab

it Lab is still buzzing with activity these days and it’s great to see so many members continuing with their frequent exercise programmes. We have something on offer for everyone including personal training, group exercise classes and, even if working out in a gym is not ‘your thing’, there’s

always, tennis, squash, swimming and Padel Tennis. If you have never been a gym lover but you would perhaps like to start using the gym, it can be a daunting prospect to get started. The team at Fit Lab would be more than happy to do an orientation of the gym with you to show you the equipment and its usage so don’t hold back, just contact us and get going. This month the club celebrates its 30th Anniversary. Although I have not been here since the opening, I think that the gym has come a long way in those years. On opening, it was a very small room, part of what is the ladies’ locker room now and because it was being used so much it eventually got moved to its current site; it has been

expanded a few times since being there which is testament to how important gym facilities are these days, especially for golfers. I mentioned in last month’s report how so many of the European Tour Professionals used the gym during the Dubai Desert Classic compared with a few years ago so it has become a very important part of their daily routine. Congratulations to all present and past members, management and colleagues on making this club what it is today - the number one club in the region. Enjoy the celebrations! Andy Meech Head of Sports & Leisure

Member of the Month: Michael Kogeler Michael consistently trains three times a week and puts in 110% every time. After recently smashing his Personal Best at the Dubai Marathon 10K race, he’s on the road to bigger and better races.

e all love sipping on fruit smoothies bursting with goodness. However, only recently I learned something very important while feeding some of our health and fitness loyalists at Roseleaf FitLab - it’s really important to include some form of protein with every meal and snack, especially if you are an active gym goer.

EXERCISE OF THE MONTH

The Turkish Get Up Here is why you should care about the TGU: • Shoulder stability and mobility: • Thoracic extension and rotation: • Linking motor patterns: • Functionality:

Taking this on board, we have now introduced three new protein powders to add to our smoothies and acai bowls from the good people at Amazonia and the best part is that it’s both vegan and organic!

Top tip...I’ve been adding a scoop of RAW Pro-biotic ‘Women’s Multi’ whey protein powder to my Berry Bonanza Smoothie and I have noticed that I stay fuller for longer and with increased energy throughout. If you frequently visit the gym, the added protein also helps your muscles recover from post workout tension...basically it’s a winwin all round!

EXCEPTIONAL BALL SPEED FROM THE JAILBREAK EFFECT Rogue employs improved Jailbreak Technology with new, hourglass-shaped titanium bars that are 25% lighter, while fulfilling their function to stiffen the crown and sole. The stiffer body allows the face to take on more impact-load to promote faster ball speed, and makes possible our new X-Face VFT face architecture, which promotes fast ball speed across an expansive area of the face. Together, Jailbreak and X-Face VFT work together to create what we call the Jailbreak Effect, which promotes a remarkable boost in ball speed and distance.

PREMIUM SHAFT SELECTION AT MULTIPLE WEIGHTS Callaway offers a wide range of premium aftermarket shafts at 40g, 50g, 60g, and 70g weights, including Aldila Synergy, Aldila Quaranta, Project X EvenFlow, and Project X HZRDS Yellow.

TUNGSTEN WEIGHTING FOR OPTIMAL FLIGHT AND CONTROL Tungsten Weighting allows us to position the CG in each of the long irons with extraordinary precision, promoting optimum launch and control at each individual loft. The tungsten, twice as heavy as steel, concentrates significant weight into a small space in the form of an intricately shaped part, which is key to precisely controlling CG location.

MORE MOI AND FORGIVENESS FROM OUR TRIAXIAL CARBON CROWN Callaway is the leader at using carbon composite materials to enhance metalwood performance. Our proprietary triaxial carbon composite is extraordinarily light and strong, saving substantial weight. We’ve redistributed that weight into the head’s perimeter to significantly increase MOI and forgiveness, which helps preserve distance and direction on offcentre hits. Rogue has the largest triaxial carbon crown of any Callaway driver ever.

INDUSTRY-LEADING BOEING AERO PACKAGE Boeing and Callaway collaborated to develop the Speed Step technology used in past Callaway metalwoods. In Rogue, we worked with Boeing to redefine the geometry of the leading edge to improve airflow to promote faster head speed.

60 FACE CUP AND VFT Rogue irons combine our renowned 360 Face Cup technology with Variable Face Thickness (VFT) technology to expand the portion of the face that delivers fast ball speed. Face Cup employs a shallow, flexible rim around the perimeter of the face that flexes and releases at impact to increase ball speed. VFT also influences how the face itself flexes to promote more ball speed on off-center hits. The combination of these two technologies promotes ball speed and distance.

URETHANE MICROSPHERES FOR PHENOMENAL SOUND AND FEEL The upside of a thin clubface is faster ball speed and more distance, the downside is excessive vibration that generates an unpleasant sound and feel. Urethane can be used to dampen vibration to improve sound and feel, but it can also greatly reduce the face’s ability to flex, lowering COR and ball speed. Our elastic-urethane microspheres provide the sound and feel benefits of urethane without compromising COR or ball speed.
