Courtney, Director of Formation and Spirituality I wonder if…perhaps like Esther in the Bible, we who are living through this time of quarantine and pandemic were “raised up for such a time as this.” The Body of Christ is really being called to do the work now; we are being called to be the Body without touching, socially distanced and isolated. How can we do that?

You have probably noticed that we have been “doing church” a great deal more these days, despite the restrictions of pandemic and quarantine. In fact, if you wanted to you could listen to Dean Kate’s short and simple message at 6 a.m. guiding us through the Easter

I don’t know about you, but I certainly could never have participated in Formation like that in the old world. We have offered our Quiet Garden Mornings virtually as well as Wisdom flow and Spiritual flow Yoga with our favorite Yoga master Megan Cochran.

Season with a word and a reflection. Then you could join our coffee pot group at 7 a.m. for reflection on the word of the day and some conversation. Each day there have been various offerings including our Youth and Children Director’s Contemplative Word and Godly Play videos.

We have been preparing Youth and Adult parishioners for confirmation in three separate offerings on Tuesday evenings, Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings.

And every evening, our beloved Lewis Hunt has offered my favorite service in the prayer book: Compline. If you haven’t participated in that holy offering, you should give it a try.

Having “practiced resurrection” during the Easter Season, I invite you to move with us into the season of Pentecost as we celebrate the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ and the coming of the Holy Spirit among us. In the strangest of ways, we have been given more opportunities than ever before to be the Body of Christ. Let us know how you have responded to God’s call to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the world, and let us continue together as a stronger congregation, molded and shaped by God during this time of quarantine.

Many years ago at Kanuga, the Christianity and Literature conference was a favorite to attend.

Two wise and seasoned priests and teachers led it, the Rev. William Barnwell and the Rev. Sam Lloyd. I attended several times and became deeply interested in the study of how literature engages Christian thought, experience and practice. Though the conference is not offered anymore, I have long wanted to share this interest at the parish level, and so with a little nudging from Father Bob Dannals, we are offering a class this summer called Summer Reading: A Faith and Literature Series.

Each class will be about 45 minutes on Sundays.

Please stay tuned for time and location, either in the Cathedral or online via Zoom meeting or both.

Father Bob Dannals will kick off this new series with a look at Dante’s Divine Comedy on June 7. John Ragsdale has already chosen to talk about Flannery O’Connor’s short story Revelation and Douglas Dupree will be presenting some of W. H. Auden’s poetry. I will explore an excerpt from Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton. Please watch for more details coming soon in the Eagle! We are looking forward to sharing several wonderful literary works with you and exploring how their authors and poets have woven the gospel message through them.

VIRTUAL EUCHARIST: IS IT POSSIBLE?

And yet, in this unprecedented time of virtual reality, there is a spiritual communion that is possible online. Each Sunday, as I celebrate communion from the altar of the Cathedral here in Jacksonville, I invite all those who watch online to bring with them the Book of Common Prayer, a candle and a piece of bread. I implore them to be more than just spectators of this celebration, but to participate in it, to kneel and stand and respond, to read the Psalm aloud, and to break the bread with me.

That’s what a Catholic nun asked when she heard that I was an Episcopal priest. My answer was yes. Yes, yes, yes! I believe in the mysterious presence of Christ in the bread and wine consecrated in the company of other believers. I believe that when two or three gather in Christ’s name, God is in the midst “YES, YES, YES! I BELIEVE IN THE of them. I believe that the presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist has shaped my life. My friend the Rev. Christopher Martin, author of The Restoration Project, teaches that all Christians must meet in small discipleship groups to experience the fullness of our faith. He insists that these discipleship groups be “doggedly incarnational.” In other words, he wants people to meet face to face and not over conference calls or online, at least not always.

The Eucharist is also doggedly incarnational. It demands that we touch it. God is feeding us with real food in real-time, and there is no substitute.

Today is indeed an unprecedented time of spiritual growth and development. Let us give thanks for the mysterious and manifold ways that God becomes known to us, both online and live. Leave it to the Holy Spirit to surprise us every day!

SINGING GOD’S PRAISES IN A CHALLENGING TIME

by Timothy Tuller, Canon for Music The coronavirus pandemic has presented unique musical challenges to churches, congregations, and church music leaders not seen before in any of our lifetimes. By its very nature, sacred music making is social activity: choirs, instrumental ensembles, and congregations sing their praises assembled together, in groups. Indeed, we make music in precisely the types of groups that cannot gather at this time. Along with clergy and lay leaders, organists and choir directors have had to scramble to figure out new and creative ways to adapt to a reality where choirs and congregations cannot come together in large groups and have often found themselves working in the less-familiar medium of recorded or livestreamed worship services. The challenge for all has been to maintain musical and liturgical integrity while remaining within the constraints required for health and safety.

If we look to history, we will find many examples of composers and musicians who met the challenge of producing sacred art in times of great societal illness and death. In the fourteenth century the French composer Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1377) went into isolation during the Bubonic Plague. When he emerged, he had produced one of the most pivotal compositions in the history of Western Music, the Messe de Notre Dame. This groundbreaking work exists as the first known example of a complete musical setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer. It heavily steered the direction of sacred composition from that point onward, and its influence can be traced right down to the present day.

In 1723, Johann Sebastian Bach wrote his Cantata No.25 in response to the Great Plague of Marseille, which during the preceding couple of years had claimed some hundred thousand lives. A portion of text from the piece boldly affirms, “My plague cannot be healed by any herb or ointment, other than the balm of Gilead.” When Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff and his family relocated to America in 1918, he and his daughters became afflicted with the Spanish Flu. In debt and in need of income, Rachmaninoff managed during his sickness to produce many fine transcriptions in preparation for a major subsequent concert tour.

During the coming months and years, as we move forward and out of quarantine, the ways in which people will have experienced worship will have been dramatically expanded beyond the boundaries of physical church buildings and traditional liturgies. This pandemic has forced churches, including their musicians, to radically reconsider how to offer worship, how best to employ technology, and how to fulfill the spiritual needs of congregations in entirely new ways. This profound re-think of how we worship together may yet yield great new modes, styles, and musical and liturgical creativity. As it has throughout history, great art will arise out of great adversity!

RESURRECTION PA R A D E Cheryl Bowen, St John’s Parishioner

One of my favorite memories of being a parent of young children is Easter shopping, dedicating a whole afternoon, after school, to THE shopping experience of the year. My list would include not just the princess-type dress or the little-man suit, but all the perfectly matched accessories, too!

As my own children grew too old for those preEaster dates with Mom, I turned my energies toward showing off other church families’ children, by coordinating Resurrection Parades on Easter Sunday.

With this pandemic, I had to ignite my imagination to have a parade, and the St. John’s parents REALLY came together to make it happen! In the midst of schooling at home, they set aside time for their children to create an Easter sign to hold for the virtual parade. Then, they put on the Easter Sunday best and took photos of their children with their creation. It made my heart leap to imagine the looks on the faces of the parishioners, younger and older, to see these MOST gorgeous kids, on Resurrection morning!

I hope everyone gets to refresh their Easter celebration spirit, by watching the parade again and again! (It’s a SURE way to add a smile, during quarantine time, too.)

For two days I folded palm fronds, taking care to follow the instructions given by an older woman and her daughter-in-law in a YouTube video. The task required origami preciseness of my stubby fingers, as I worked to become proficient at this task that had been assigned to me by a new friend at the Cathedral.

“You should be able to knock out a hundred in forty-five minutes,” said my friend. Not likely. The fronds were uneven in width, wouldn’t always make it through the pocket without peeling off the edges. Soaking them in warm water helped, but the water soon grew cold and the air conditioner blast over

For over thirty years as a priest, I received these crosses, made by others, ordered from a company in Africa or delivered by the altar guild or church school. Today I find them dried and holding their shape tucked among brushes in my art studio or resting with pens in a mug in the kitchen. No two are alike.

I had trouble with the palmetto palms. I grabbed some of the larger fronds that my neighbor had cut from the trees in his yard. Maintaining proper distance physically in this virus/quarantine time, he dumped them in my yard. Now I sat on the porch with them at my feet. Until I managed to get a rhythm going, I felt awkward and not well-suited to this craft that has been done by many all over the world to mark the Holy Week journey with Jesus.

Blithely I said that I was going to wrap each cross in prayer as I made them. In reality, it came down to blessing them when they were all done, hoping as they went to each household in the parish that they became a source of strength, a reminder of community, a permanent marker of a faith that often takes us where we did not intend to go.

The crosses we are carrying and suffering with are the virus and isolation, but the other crosses we live with have not gone away. They are still green and shaping us.

by Lewis Hunt, St. John’s Parishioner Since January, when my wife Terry died, nightfall has been a tough part of my day. I turned to evening prayer for help.

Prayer was good, but social isolation and having a daughter locked down in Spain worked against me. I craved the company of friends.

In early March, I turned to my Book of Common Prayer and read Compline to myself. The Holy Spirit led me to gather a group by live streaming on the Cathedral’s Facebook page. I am so grateful to the Cathedral for supporting me in this. Now, anywhere from 10 to 20 people join together

each evening for Compline or Night Prayer accompanied by live music. Some are Cathedral regulars; others live far away, even as far as Brazil!

I pray that everyone gets as much out of the time together as I do. It is therapy for me. Though I cannot see or hear them, they are with me. And I love seeing everyone say hello, greet each other, or type out a prayer in the comments. I feel their presence and their love, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. I will carry on and I hope you will join in!

R E T H I N K I N G C O M M U N I C AT I O N S IN THE TIME OF COVID-19 Nancy Purcell, Director of Marketing and Communications

On March 5, I attended a one-day “COMMference” for church communicators at Chet’s Creek Church.

The first speaker talked about the prevailing fear that online worship would mean the end of in-person church. “Virtual” worship has been present for about a century, beginning with preachers giving the first worship broadcasts on radio in the 1920s, followed by television mid-century.

After showing statistics corroborating that church attendance is on the decline in the 21st century, he suggested that church attendance was not so much declining as it was decentralizing. In other words, the people of God are convening in many spaces now. As the month of March unfolded, we would all experience this truth.

Who would have imagined on Sunday March 9, that within a week St. John’s would be holding three services but encouraging people to stay at home and watch online? Or, even more incredibly, that within two weeks (by March 26) we would halt all in-person worship and offer virtual, online services only. What an unprecedented and abrupt shift in worship! All these changes happened just weeks before what is one of the most important weeks on the church calendar – Holy Week – the week between Palm Sunday (April 5) and Easter (April 12).

Thankfully St. John’s was ready to handle it because of our live stream capabilities and an already strong communications team. During Holy Week, St. John’s hosted 18 services on our YouTube channel with a total of 10,334 views. The Palm Sunday service was viewed by more than 1,200 people and the Easter service, more

than 2,100. Just to put those numbers in perspective, prior to March 9 the average number of online views for our livestream was 160. Prior to the pandemic, we gained about 7 new subscribers to our YouTube channel per week; throughout the pandemic, we have added an average of 27 subscribers per week.

We have live stream capabilities at St. John’s Cathedral thanks to a gift from Helen Lane and to the vision of Fouad and Karim Zabaneh, Father Raja’s sons, to begin a media ministry.

They started broadcasting services in 2016. The Cathedral has four cameras, a Vaddio ProductionVIEW HD Camera Control Console and Open Broadcast Software (OBS) for video recording and live streaming. Today the communications team pushes out notifications for St. John’s livestream across multiple communications channels including the website, social media, email and the Realm app.

If we’ve learned anything from our virtual experience, it is that people need to be together. And, more importantly, that church is a place where we find connection and community. When we were no longer able to meet in-person, we sought and found each other online. John F. Kennedy said, “When written in Chinese the word ‘crisis’ is composed of two characters.

One represents danger and the other represents opportunity.” This pandemic has certainly created an incredible opportunity for us to use channels of communication in new ways. It has given us the opportunity to make connections online—with each other and with God. I believe that after the pandemic has passed, we will not abandon these channels, but continue to embrace them.

St. John’s has created a shepherding ministry composed of 45 individuals calling, texting, and emailing 700 members of this congregation. This amazing team has been checking weekly to make sure that anyone living alone, and all those over the age of 65, are getting the care and resources they need. It is our way of looking out for the potentially vulnerable members of our flock and comforting them through these difficult days. The contacts have made it possible for us to provide direct care for folks who needed help with food and medicine, to bring last rites to a member in the terminal stages of Parkinson’s disease, and to offer prayer opportunities to dozens of members and their families.

Of course, there is a lot of excitement about an eventual return to some type of in-person worship and fellowship at St. John’s. But it is important to state clearly that your Pastoral Care team will continue to focus on the needs of our members who may not be able to return to Church until there is some type of advanced treatment or a vaccine. With this in mind, we are creating an online cancer support group, preparing an online course for 12-Step recovery, and developing new ways for small groups to meet in a virtual setting.

These and all other worship, Christian education, and fellowship offerings will be done in parallel with any activities on our campus so that no one will be left out.

SIGNS OF NEW LIFE

I N T H E C AT H E D R A L D I S T R I C T The Very Rev. Kate Moorehead, Dean Easter was just days away when we heard the news. Our application to the City of Jacksonville for the planting of 60 trees had not only been approved, but the treeplanting would begin the next day! Just when we needed a bit of hope and new life, it came to us in the form of trees.

Herman Hesse wrote, “Trees do not preach learning and precepts. They preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life.”

These trees will give new life and hope to an area of the downtown that has long been forgotten and overlooked. They will bring new life to a neighborhood where 50% of the land is surface parking lots. Birds will come, leaves will fall, and passersby will be able to stand for a moment in the shade.

In this time of pandemic, think of the trees. They root themselves and live longer than a human lifetime. They give us so much beauty, so much wisdom.

This pandemic will end, and we will emerge from our homes with a new appreciation for life itself. When you are able, please come downtown to the Cathedral District and see the trees.

The trees are for you, for the whole of Jacksonville. Remember that, in a moment of despair and loneliness, they brought us new life.

C AT H E D R A L A R T S P R O J E C T (CAP) EXHIBITION Jay Wright, St John’s Parishioner

The pandemic halted our plans to have a reception for this exhibition and to hear the CAP String Ensemble in our Sunday worship service.

This year’s CAP exhibition is divided into two segments, representing different aspects of CAP’s growing arts program.

V I S UA L A RTS S H OWC A S E The Visual Arts Showcase is a traveling exhibition, which is presented at various venues in the area.

The opportunity to exhibit is a well-deserved reward for students’ hard work and reinforces the self-confidence and maturity fostered in CAP classes. The young artists are proud to share their work which spans a variety of artistic media.

KIDS HOPE ALLIANCE Kids Hope Alliance is a program for 12 to 17-yearold boys at The John E. Goode Pre-Trial Detention Facility. These large, color-filled canvases are gestural in the manner of Abstract Expressionism.

In the process of making the paintings, the boys learn communication and social skills, non-violent self-expression and new approaches to painting.

These collaborative works help them experience the joy of making art while opening new horizons and new possibilities.
