MAGGIE CENTRE PROJECT : Final Year Project LOCATION : Wolverhampton, UK INSTITUTION : University of Wolverhampton

Who was Maggie?

Maggie was a writer, gardener and designer. When she was 47, Maggie was diagnosed with breast cancer and five years later, in May 1993, on a visit to the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, she was told that it had returned.

After hearing this, Maggie and her husband Charles Jencks were moved to a windowless corridor where they were left to process the news. They discussed the need for somewhere 'better' for people with cancer to go, outside of but nearby to the hospital.

Maggie felt that her diagnosis and treatment was as hard on her family as it was on her, so she created a new type of support, a centre that could make the experience of cancer more manageable for everyone.

Maggie also wanted to bring people together in a calm and friendly space

Maggie and Charles designed the blueprint for the centres together, enlisting the help of some of their friends from the architectural world. The first Maggie's opened in Edinburgh in 1996, and they now have many centres across the UK and even some abroad.

Thomas Heatherwick Maggie's Centre

The London-based designer plans to create a building that looks like a group of giant pot plants in the grounds of St James's University Hospital in Leeds, providing a drop-in centre for anyone suffering from or affected by cancer.

Described as "a collection of stepped planter elements", the design comprises a series of curved structures with plantcovered roofs. A mixture of private and communal meeting spaces will be framed within.

As only a mere concept I have taken a liking to this.

The way that nature has been incorporated into the design has made some thing that is very attractive.

From my design I would like to create something that incorporates a lot of natural elements water, plants, sunlight. Here it also seems that the designer has used an unusual material for the external cladding.

SANAA river-inspired building

Called The River, the 83,000square-foot (7710 square metres) structure is a series of five pavilions linked by a curved roof, which descend a gently sloping hillside on a former farm site in New Canaan.

Each space includes a different function: a sanctuary, library, gymnasium, orientation centre, and a commons with a cafe. An existing barn on the property has also been transformed, to create an open-air garden and welcome centre.

Concept and Initial Ideas These are some of the initial ideas running through my mind while developing the overall concept for the site and initial building

It would be ideal to create a legible main entrance into the site. It would be beneficial if the site had some form of protection which would help give patients peace of mind.

The entrance is directly off the main road which is not attractive. It might benefit the site to have an entrance away from the main road which could help to soften the visual impact on the overall site

The relationship between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ is important.

A house protects you from the ‘outside’.

Equally the ‘outside’ of a garden is a buffer to the real ‘outside’. It is a place where you can feel sheltered but enjoy a bit of the kinder sides of nature.

If the site had more of a connection with the river it could make for good design. Incorporating water into a design is known to relax users of the design, “Water in the landscape can create a soothing feeling, mask unwanted noise, and provide water for bees, birds, and butterflies”.

On the site is what appears to be a tent, the site is currently being used by the homeless for shelter. All areas of the site will need to be redeveloped so some form of surveillance can be implemented which would solve the homeless issue.

Also being so close to New Cross hospital it would be ideal if patients are not able to see and be reminded of the hospital every time they look out the window. As mentioned before the site is directly off a main road and visually this is not appealing so some sort of intervention to block or remove this is necessary.

The main driving concept behind the building was the idea of a Tree after looking at Traditional Japanese architecture. Using this concept I broke down the parts of a tree and used that to develop my design.

The trunk- The tree trunk is its main core and stability. In terms of my design this would be the main communal / functional space.

The Branches- In terms of design this would be all the other ancillary spaces which helps the main core keep its function.

The fruit- In the design this would be the garden spaces this is also why it was very important that the relationship between the outside and inside is as seamless as possible.

THE LIGHT BOX PROJECT : Chances Glass Work LOCATION : Smethwick , UK INSTITUTION : University of Wolverhampton

Chances Glass Chance Brothers was founded in 1824 in Spon Lane, Smethwick. During the 19th century it became one of the most important glass works in Britain. It manufactured sheet glass, including the panes for the Crystal Palace of 1851, window glass in different colours and optical glass including the lenses for lighthouses.

Here is the entrance into the courtyard the white door next to it is the main entrance which we used to get inside the building. I want to turn the entrance of the courtyard into the main entrance into the building as it more credible than the current white door.

London's V&A museum

Stirling Prize-winning architect Amanda Levete and her firm AL_A have completed a new porcelain-tiled entrance and underground exhibition hall at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The V&A Exhibition Road Quarter comprises an alternative entrance to the museum, as well as extra gallery space and a courtyard.

The fact that the courtyard has been used as the main design and circulation space is very important as this project has a courtyard without a function so giving a use would greatly improve its current condition.

Here the roof light still looks up at the main historical section of the building. It gives the sense that even though they are separate elements they are still connected.

Dublin Dental Hospital

The project takes on five contiguous Protected Structures in central Dublin and converts them as the offices, library and gallery of the Dublin Dental Hospital.

Older finishes, opes, doors and windows are all retained where possible. A series of new light-wells are dropped through the fabric to bring light to the lower levels, forming niches and spaces around an expanded modern central corridor intervention used for the display of the Hospitals collection of art; the spaces literally work as a gallery as well as a circulation space. The rooftop is transformed by the addition of dramatic new ‘pods’ overlooking Trinity College containing a library and art display spaces.

The way the extension contrasts the main building is attractive, saying this I would also like have the roof extension be discovered. So if that means setting it back on some elevations and having it visible on others.

I like that they used a lightweight material. I would like to do something similar as the building structurally does not seem to be in the best condition so it would be wise to not overload it.

The first floor is held up by 300mm by 100mm thick steel beam by Rainhams additionally to this a beam support slab is also implemented in holding up the floor. The 200mm thick poured on site concrete slab.

Below the slab is a 50mm thick rock wool insulation sheet. under the sheet is a 28mm air gap. to finish of a 10mm thick suspended ceiling is used which is attached to a 10mm thick steel cable holding up the ceiling. On the top of the slab there is a wooden levelling and support frame to finish a 28mm grip decking with will be nailed to the support frame.

Second Floor Construction.

The first floor is held up by 300mm by 100mm thick steel beam by Rainhams additionally to this a beam support slab is also implemented in holding up the floor. The 200mm thick poured on site concrete slab is topped by a 75mm thick layer of sand screed, on top of that is a 28mm thick slab of screed board. An 11mm thick PVC tile is used as a final finish. Below the construction is a 175mm thick air gap, which can be used for service wires. A 10mm thick suspended ceiling is used to finish the construction off.

Exterior wall

The outside wall is made up of 250 mm thick reinforced concrete slab which has been shuttered to make a wall after this is a 315 mm ridged

insulation. The insulation will go between the steel column which is 424 by 474.6 mm thick. To finish this off is a 13 mm thick plaster board.

The internal wall is made up of two layers of 100 mm by 225 mm concrete commons block. Manufactured by Thomas Armstrong. between the two layer is a gap of 250 mm. On each face of the block work in the gap is a layer of 50 mm thick rock wool insulation sheet.

Ground Floor The ground floor is made up of 160 mm thick compacted hardcore which is topped by a 75 mm layer of rolled. On top of that is a 200 mm poured on site concrete. On top of that there is a 50 mm rock wool layer of insulation.Then the damp proof course, then a 75 mm thick concrete slab.

Foundation The foundation is comprised of a bolted column plate at 610mm by 1224mm which rest on a dual pile foundation which span has determined to be about 3 meters deep. A steel column 424 by 474.6 mm is bolted to the column plate.

The first floor is held up by 300 mm by 1036 mm thick steel beam by Rainhams additionally to this a beam support slab is also implemented in holding up the first floor. To accompany this another smaller beam that is 200 mm by 499 mm. this beam is used for support so that there is extra renforcement on the long spans the floors cover. The 453.9 mm thick poured on site concrete slab is topped by a 75mm thick layer of in situ concrete. Below the slab is a 572 mm thick air gap, which can be used for service wires. A 10mm thick suspended ceiling is used to finish the construction off.

Internal block wall.

The outside wall is made up of a 30mm thick black powder coating aluminium sheet cladding, which is held by a 20mm by 20mm steel strut. This is then backed by a 250mm by 100mm concrete common block. Followed by 100mm thick rock wool insulation. There is then a second layer of Block work to finish the wall.

The internal wall is made up of two layers of 100mm by 225mm concrete commons block. Manufactured by Thomas Armstrong. On each face of the block wall there is a 25mm thick piece of MDF

To top all of that off is a 200 mm thick reinforced poured on site concrete

The ground floor is made up of 150mm thick compacted hardcore which is topped by a 75mm layer of rolled. On top of that is a 200mm poured on site concrete. then Then the damp proof course, on top of that there is a 50mm rock wool layer of insulation. On top of that insulation is a 75mm layer of sand screed with a 28mm screed board finish.
