TheRedCrosssoughttodevelopa trainingfacilitythatcouldhost seminarsandclassesduringthe summermonths.Inadditionto trainingspace,thesiteneededto offeraccommodationsforguests stayingatthetrainingcamp.

Giventhatthesiteislocatedina resortareaofthecountry,itwas identifiedthatthe accommodationscouldberented outduringtheoff-seasonto generateadditionalincomewhile thetrainingfacilitywasnotinuse. Thisapproachwouldmaximisethe utilisationofthesite,makingita morefinanciallysustainable venture.

Maggiewasawriter,gardenerand designer.Whenshewas47, Maggiewasdiagnosedwithbreast cancerandfiveyearslater,inMay 1993,onavisittotheWestern GeneralHospitalinEdinburgh,she wastoldthatithadreturned.

Afterhearingthis,Maggieandher husbandCharlesJenckswere movedtoawindowlesscorridor wheretheywerelefttoprocess thenews.Theydiscussedtheneed forsomewhere'better'forpeople withcancertogo,outsideofbut nearbytothehospital.

Maggiefeltthatherdiagnosisand treatmentwasashardonherfamily asitwasonher,soshecreateda newtypeofsupport,acentrethat couldmaketheexperienceofcancer moremanageableforeveryone.

Maggiealsowantedtobringpeople togetherinacalmandfriendly spacethatwouldhelpthemtofind comfortintheexperiencesofothers.

MaggieandCharlesdesignedthe blueprintforthecentrestogether, enlistingthehelpofsomeoftheir friendsfromthearchitecturalworld. ThefirstMaggie'sopenedin Edinburghin1996,andtheynow havemanycentresacrosstheUK andevensomeabroad.

DesignPhilosophy

Thedesignofthisprojectfocuses ontherelationshipbetweenthe interiorandexteriorspaces,witha keyemphasisonconnectingwith nature.

Traditionally,ahouseservesasa protectivebarrierfromtheoutside world.Similarly,agardenactsasa bufferbetweentheinteriorspace andtheoutsideenvironment, offeringasanctuarywhereone canfeelshelteredwhilestill experiencingthenaturalworld.

Incorporatingelementsofthe naturalenvironmentintothe designiscritical,asresearchhas shownthatexposuretonaturehas apositiveimpactonhumanwellbeing.Specifically,the incorporationofwaterfeatures andnaturalelementscancreatea calmingeffect,maskunwanted noise,andprovideahabitatfor wildlifesuchasbees,birds,and butterflies.

ChanceBrotherswas foundedin1824inSpon Lane,Smethwick.During the19thcenturyit becameoneofthemost importantglassworks factoryinBritain.It manufacturedsheet glass,includingthe panesfortheCrystal Palaceof1851,window glassindifferentcolours andopticalglass includingthelensesfor lighthouses.

Brief

Theclient'sobjectivewasto revitaliseaGrade2listedbuilding andrepurposeitintoafunctional space.Thebuildingwouldbeused tohouselocalartisans,providinga spaceforthemtocreateandsell theirwork.

However,duetothebuilding's listedstatus,theexteriorofthe existingstructurecouldnotbe altered,whichposedauniqueset ofchallengesinthedesign process.Despitetheseconstraints, thelimitationsultimatelygavethe designteamthefreedomto developaschemethatmaximised thebuilding'spotentialwithinits originalframework.

Throughcarefulconsiderationof thebuilding'shistoricfeaturesand structurallimitations,theteamwas abletocreateadesignthat fulfilledtheclient'svisionwhile maintainingthebuilding's historicalintegrity.Theendresult isavibrantspacethathonoursthe pastwhilesupportingthelocal creativecommunity.

DesignPhilosophy

Afterconductingathorough analysisofthebuildingandits history,itbecameclearthatany newdesignneededtopay homagetothesite'srichheritage.

Toachievethis,thenewextension wasdesignedtodirectlyreference thefactory'sprevioususeasa lighthouseglass-makingfacility. Thisdesignfeatureservesasanod tothesite'spastwhilealso bringingacontemporaryelement tothebuilding.

Inadditiontohonouringthe building'shistory,thenew extensionalsoservesasabeacon forthesurroundingarea.The extension'sprominentlocation adjacenttotheM5highwaymakes ithighlyvisible,signallingthe importanceofthesiteanditsnew purposeasacreativehub..
