I would also like to welcome the 2016 BOD and new members. We have great successful history and more to come in this year. I strongly believe our members are the key factor in our success now and in the future. I would like to encourage every member since she/he contributed in our growth in Saudi Arabia to invite all others to our events and programs and become members.

To sustain our success and growth, we will continue focusing on the following areas:1-

Grow international and internal members

Diversify SAICSC-ACS activities and expand it to reach other areas of our country

Call for Abstract Submission The Saudi Arabian International Chemical Sciences Chapter of the American Chemical Society (SAICSC-ACS) is pleased to invite you to submit your abstracts and participate in the 10th International Conference and Exhibition on Chemistry in Industry (ChemIndix 2016), which will be held during November 20-24, 2016, in the Gulf Convention Center, Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain.

The conference theme is

“Sustainable Energy Industry through Innovative Chemistry” The conference hosts a large gathering of scientists and professionals from around the world, and focuses on cutting-edge advances in the energy industry. The SAICSC-ACS is honored to announce that Mr. Ahmad Al-Khowaiter, Saudi Aramco Chief Technology Officer, will be the Executive Conference Chairman for ChemIndix 2016.

ANNUAL GATHERING The 2015 SAICSC-ACS Annual Gathering was held on December 2015 ,16 at Le Meridian Hotel, Khobar. The gathering attracted different executives from Saudi Aramco and major local companies, SAICSC-ACS board of directors, and society members.

The agenda of this gathering included a presentation by the SAICSC-ACS chair Dr. Mazin Fathi highlighted the main accomplishments and achievements during the year 2015. Followed by an appreciation

letter from for the ACS president Dr. Diane Grob Schmidt was read

by Chair elect Mr. Ibrahim AlGhamdi.ACS president expressed her gratitude for our chapter’s remarkable activities to raise the profile of chemistry science in Saudi Arabia as well as in the Gulf region A video tape by the society chair Dr. Mazin Fathi has been delivered to the audience highlighting to them the major chapter’s activities during the year 2015.

It was well received from all

the attendees. Nobody denies that our local sponsors are real partners in our success stories.

The gathering was a chance to recognized them and express our sincere appreciation for their continuous support which has played an important role of achieving the society objectives.

JANUARY 2016 TECHNICAL DINNER MEETING Saudi Arabia: As New Comer Country to Nuclear Energy The Saudi Arabian International Chemical Sciences Chapter of the American Chemical Society (SAICSC-ACS) held its January 2016 edition of the monthly technical dinner meeting on 31st of January 2016 at Le Meridien hotel, Al-Khobar.

At the meeting, an important lectured was delivered by Professor. Mohammed A. Garwan, Director of the Atomic Energy Sector King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Garwan deliver a wonderful talk on the KACARE role of developing alternative energy sources in Saudi Arabia.

He explain the importance

alternative energy to the Kingdom and challenges associated Nuclear energy. Dr. Garwan also outlines the global view of the international nuclear energy scene and the outlook for the nuclear energy future. Audience were more interactive with Dr. Garwan when he briefed on the pedagogical glimpse on the prescribed IAEA methodology for newcomer countries.

Dr. Garwan is leading the KACARE and he is the Liaison Officer for Saudi Arabia for Technical Cooperation with International Atomic Energy Agency. Prior to join KACARE, Dr. Garwan was a professor at physics department, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals,

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He was the founding Dean of Dammam Community College, Dammam, and the founding dean of the National Institute of Technology, Jeddah. He was also Director General of Sultan bin Abdulaziz Science and Technology Center (SciTech), AlKhobar. He provided consultancy to many government and private sectors in Saudi Arabia and GCC.

FEBRUARY 2016 DINNER MEETING The world’s Leading Synthetic Macromolecule The Saudi Arabian International Chemical Sciences Chapter of the American Chemical Society (SAICSC-ACS) held its February 2016 monthly technical dinner at Movenpik Hotel on February 24th 2016.

A lecture titled “The world’s Leading Synthetic Macromolecule” was presented by Dr. Trevor J. Hutley Dr. Hutley is a Consultant with broad technical and business experience in the global polymer and petrochemical industry,

across many organizations based in the UK, Switzerland, Hong Kong and more than 9 years in the Middle East.

Dr. Hutley obtained his PhD in polymer engineering, an executive MBA in finance and marketing. He is a visionary and creative technical leader; an insightful, analytical, penetrating, inquisitive, strategic and lateral thinker. His recent assignments includes: Research and Innovation advisor to the GPCA, corporate business development

consultant for PGH. Polymer technology commercialization consultant at Dhahran Techno Valley Company. Technical and mangemetn consultant to a Swiss technology provider Polkem Sarl.

Dr. Hutley lecture emphasizes the discovery, development, future of polyethylene. He also present a new overview of the -80years history of polyethylene and development of polymer science with innovation and future challenges.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE FEMALE STUDENTS VISIT TO SAUDI ARAMCO RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CENTER In collaboration with the Saudi Aramco Research & Development Center, SAICSC-ACS organized a visit to the Saudi Aramco R&DC for 37 Community College female students on February 24, 2016.

The visit was well-organized and an excellent technical program was established to enhance the chemistry science among the students. The students had an exciting time where they enjoyed the presentations, experiments and labs tour prepared for them.

STUDENT SECTION OF SAICSC-ACS VISIT TO KAUST Generously supported by the local Saudi Chapter of the American Chemical Society and SABIC, the Student section of SAICSC-ACS organized a visit to King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Thuwal, in January 12 and 13, 2016. The visit was aimed at discovering KAUST, a leading research university in Saudi Arabia, and participating in the annual Winter Enrichment Program (WEP). Furthermore, an integral component of the trip was to visit the research centers of SABIC and Aramco, located in KAUST, and recognize their ongoing and future projects. In a word, the trip was successful.

Seven members of the Student Chapter were to participate in this event, but one member was not able attend the visit due to an unfortunate circumstance.

The participating students are: Husam Bahlouli, Ahmed AlJameel, Yahya Rawas, Asem Alenaizan, Ayman Alluhidan and Mohammad Assallomi.

The members arrived at KAUST in the morning of January 12 and were welcomed by the WEP team. The theme of the program was Sustainability. The program included periods to walk around the campus, to visit many exhibits, and to attend technical and scientific sessions.

Specifically, the students enjoyed

the architectural magnificence of this young university and the exquisite appearance of its areas, including its outlook on the Red Sea. Several exhibits were available. For example, one exhibit showed the desert agriculture and the research conducted at KAUST to sustain the food in Saudi Arabia.

Another exhibit showcased artworks on the Saudi culture.

A third visualized artistically and scientifically the impact of global warming on the ices of the glaciers around the world. A museum viewing the contributions of the Islamic civilization on the advancement of science was also visited.

Scientifically, posters of KAUST students displaying their research work showed the diversity of the research conducted at KAUST. The program was concluded with a keynote speech on “How Can Global Oil & Gas Industry Survives the Next 85 Years�.

In the following day, January 13, the research centers of SABIC and ARAMCO were visited. The team visited the three sectors of SABIC research center and were introduced to the research projects and facilities. First, Dr. Duncan Rowe discussed the role of microalgae in the green production of certain chemicals. Second, Dr. Khalid AlMusaiteer introduced the catalysis research and took the students on a tour in the research laboratories.

The last sector showed exciting research projects addressing the synthesis and production of new materials, such as membranes and electro sensitive materials that can be used in electronic devices. In the afternoon, the team visited ARAMCO research center at KAUST. It consists of two parts, Intelligent Systems and Chemicals. Dr. Ali Alshehri introduced the work environment at the center and the future projects and arranged the visits to the research laboratory. The Intelligent Systems section addresses the advanced electrical and mechanical instrumentations related to oil drilling and production. In the Chemicals section, Dr. Mohammed Al-Daous, a former faculty member in the Chemistry Department at KFUPM, introduced the ongoing research projects and emphasized the need for chemists for the petroleum and petrochemical industry.

In conclusion, the team benefitted greatly from the visit in the academic, industrial and cultural dimensions. The visit, moreover, enabled the Student Chapter and its individual members to build a network with the leading academic and industrial professionals.

STUDENT SECTION OF SAICSC-ACS PRESENTATION AT SCHOOL The student section of Saudi Arabian International Chemical Sciences Chapter of the American Chemical Society (SAICSC-ACS) organize a school visit to Imam Saud AlKabeer School in Dhahran on 7th December, 2015. A general chemistry awareness talk was delivered

by Mr. Ahmed S. AlJameel to school students. He highlighted the importance of chemistry education and he shared his undergraduate research experience at Spain.

RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM AT CHEMSITRY DEPARTMENT, KFUPM Chemistry Department at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) organized a Research Symposium on 14th December, 2015. This event was supported by the society, the symposium highlighted research projects accomplished by the graduate and undergrad students of the department in the form of posters.

SAICSC-ACS board of directors and College of Science Dean, Prof. Suliman Saleh Al-Homidan and Vice Rector for Academic, Prof. Mohammad Saad Al-Homoud of KFUPM and industries from Dhahran techno Valley attended this symposium.

At the end of the symposium, cash prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners by the Chairman of Chemistry Department Prof. Abdulaziz Alsaadi.
