Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Beginning Fall 2015, Baker College is implementing a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative for all on-ground classes. This means that students will be bringing a device to class. Devices are defined as portable lap tops or touch screen tablets. Cell phones/smart phones do not fulfill this requirement. This is an exciting opportunity for collaboration and connectivity with other campuses, teams, students, faculty, and employers. The device, as a tool to enhance classroom learning, will allow students to take notes, connect to Blackboard, access Google products, access eBooks, collaborate with others, access academic resources, and conduct research - all without you or your students needing to leave your classroom! As part of this initiative the campus bookstores, through Barnes and Noble College, will be selling a variety of devices to students, staff and faculty. The Bookstore will stock a Hewlett Packard 15.6” laptop and an Asus 10.1” Transformer Convertible tablet. For details on these two devices, please go to the EdTech Guide, BYOD tab at http://guides.baker.edu/edtech. Other devices can be ordered via their online store. The Instructional Design and Educational Technology team also has a variety of effective resources currently available on the EdTech Guide at http://guides.baker.edu/edtech. Feel free to contact me or your Program Director if you have any questions regarding the BYOD initiative.

Responsible Use of Technology - See Mini-Workshop Below As we encourage student to use mobile technology & social media in the classroom, it is also important to discuss responsible use of these tools with students. Let’s increase the likelihood that our students will not engage in poor “Netiquette” by using their devices in inappropriate ways, such as making negative online posts about faculty and other students, engaging social media when not related to the classroom lesson, and incessant texting during class. I am scheduling a special two-hour, mini workshop on “Encouraging responsible use of mobile technology and social media on campus” for interested HUS/CRJ/ECE faculty. This mini-workshop will give you a crash course on understanding social media, learn how as a faculty member you can avoid being a target of digital conflict/cyberbullying, encourage positive use of technology in the classroom, and ensure students/faculty are aware of the Baker College Social Media Policy. The special MiniWorkshop will be held Friday, July 17th at 3:00pm - 5:00pm in the Community Room on the Clinton Township campus. This workshop is strictly voluntary and space will be limited. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to janet.joiner@baker.edu before 12:00 noon 7/13/15.

Important tips regarding submitting final grades Please make sure to use the correct grading scale. Everyone in our Division should be using the “Standard Grading Scale” which appears first on the syllabus template. You should NOT use the “Health Sciences Grading Scale.” Although the deadline for submitting final grades is Monday, June 15th at 9:00am, please take a moment to double check mathematical calculations and each student’s grade you enter before you click the final “Submit” button. If students are concerned about when final grades are posted, best practice is to tell students that grades are viewable late Tuesday or early Wednesday after classes end even though we know final grades post as soon as you enter them it helps to give yourself some flexibility in the event a grade needs correction, etc. Note: Just because grades are entered and calculated through Blackboard, does NOT mean that instructors have completed submitting grades. All instructors must still go to SOLAR/ORBIT and enter final grades (on the same page where attendance is entered). Make sure to keep clicking through the screens until you receive the message “Thank you for submitting grades”. Please note that all grade changes need to be forwarded to my attention. Grade change requests must be completed for each individual student. For example, if an instructor inadvertently uses the wrong grading scale (discussed above), he or she would need to complete and submit a separate grade change request for each and every student whose grade was miscalculated. Due to privacy issues, grade change requests for one student cannot contain grade information for another student. To minimize the need for grade change requests, please double check all assignments and calculations before submitting final grades.
