Port Huron - Clinton Township

Week 7 - Spring Quarter

** Please Inform Your Students ** WHEN:

Monday, May 18th - Thursday, May 21st

Please remind your students to take advantage of this great opportunity to register for summer and fall courses during the 7th week of the Spring Quarter. Students can get great advice and assistance registering for their courses that will help them stay on Rotation for their program, thus graduate as expected. Registering early will provide students with more course time/day selections. Students with 30 earned credit hours or above can register Monday, those with 13 earned credit hours or more can register Tuesday, and students with 12 or more earned credit hours can register beginning Wednesday.

Did you Know Research Show Lectures are Ineffective for Learning? There is an ever-growing body of research investigating effective instructional methods for delivering course content to college students. Much of this research argues lectures are boring and ineffective, making them no longer an ideal technique for providing material. To learn more, visit http://ht.ly/3knhz8 (this link will provide you an article with several embedded links crammed with great information) .

REINSTATEMENT PROCESS *** INSTRUCTORS - PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING *** Reinstatements can only be officially accepted if the online process is followed. For example, a student will not be automatically reinstated into class per the Instructor’s verbal request, email request, handwritten request, or having a student visit the Administrative Office and indicating, “My Instructor said it’s okay.” . STEPS TO REINSTATE A STUDENT INTO A CLASS: PLEASE complete the Application for Reinstatement Process by first logging into the SOLAR System Section Utilities page on the ORBIT System. If there are any students who have applied for reinstatement since the last time you (the instructor) logged in, a message will appear in red at the top of the page saying, Student Request for Reinstatement into Class. The Instructor should click the Enter Link in the Request for Reinstatement section. The Instructor will approve or deny the request for reinstatement and enter a plan for completing missed course work, projected date for completing missed course work, etc. As the Instructor, you are asked to please leave clear and concise comments explaining the decision to approve or deny the request for reinstatement. The Academic Office will run a daily APPLICATION FOR REINSTATEMENT EDIT that will list all student applications for reinstatement that need to be acted upon. If you have approved the Application for Reinstatement, the Academic Office will add the student back into the class.

Entering Course Attendance Data Each morning, Baker College emails an update to each Dean if Faculty under their academic areas have failed to enter course attendance data. This email includes the individual Faculty member’s name and course information. Student attendance (and the accurate recording of their attendance) has a direct impact on student financial aid/continued eligibility, as well as Baker College’s ability to accurately monitor and record actual student enrollment. We rely heavily on our Faculty and their ability to record ALL student attendance data in a timely manner. Faculty must enter/accurately submit ALL student attendance data within 12 hours of the class ending for the day. Incorrect or inaccurate recording of data will “trigger” a notification process involving the Dean. The Dean or her designee (Program Director) will contact the individual Faculty member immediately upon receipt of the notice indicating the Faculty member has failed to enter attendance data prior to the deadline; the Faculty member will be asked to enter attendance immediately. If after you submit your attendance data you discover an error in your submission, simply access the link titled, “Contact Academic Office” and this link will provide you details on how to arrange for correction of the data. We thank you for your support as data entry is a critical part of our ability to serve students, while also meeting our institutional reporting responsibilities.

Student Attendance Issues Student Attendance Issues: Please direct Student Attendance issues to: dawn.schlitt@baker.edu.

Incomplete Grades. Please review the requirements for Incomplete Grades very carefully. Most students will not be eligible for an “I”. Contact your Program Director or me with any questions about Incomplete grades prior to discussing it with the student.

**** HUS Courses in A Hallway at CT Campus **** Beginning fall quarter 2015, all CT campus HUS courses will be located in the A Hallway.

Technology Tips Many of us have used texting polls, like Poll Everywhere in the classroom to survey students, gather feedback, and assess student learning. Did you know there are other tools (text messaging based assignments) that allow us to embrace using the cell phone responsibly in the classroom? To learn more visit, http:// www.emergingedtech.com/2012/05/embracing-the-cell-phone-in-theclassroom-with-text-messaging-assignments/

Are you looking for a viable, creative alternative to PowerPoint and Prezi? If so, consider using Emaze. Emaze offers a variety of free templates to bring your presentation slides to life and it’s easy to use. If you have a PowerPoint presentation already created you can simply upload the entire PowerPoint presentation directly to Emaze with ease. To learn more about Emaze, visit: https://www.emaze.com/

Don’t forget to use Google Hangout. I know Google Hangout has been mentioned in this Newsletter during an earlier quarter; however, it is worth repeating. As you are aware, Baker College has fully embraced BYOD system-wide and beginning fall 2015 all students will be encouraged to use their smart devices in the classroom to take lecture notes, interact with the Instructor and fellow students using tools such as active polling and others. Students will find it convenient to use their devices to contact their Instructors using traditional email, Google Instant Messaging (IM), texting and possibly Google Hangout. If you would like to improve interaction and student learning, consider scheduling Virtual Office Hours with students using Google Hangout. For classes that require students to engage in group based assignments outside of class, encourage students to use Google Hangout so they can meet remotely. To learn more about how to use Google Hangout, visit: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=hM3dGaRq9D8

Please Check Your Faculty Mailbox As a friendly reminder, Port Huron faculty are asked to check their mailboxes when on campus. We recently noticed items in several of the boxes that are a week or more old. While most of our communication is electronic, there are times that we also communicate time-sensitive information, such as Graduation and other important events via faculty mailbox. Thank you for your support.
