Did you know October 19th - 25th is National Digital Citizenship Week? In honor of this week celebrating digital advances and the responsible use of technology and social media, please find below Apps & tools we think you might find helpful. Baker Blackboard App: Baker College began requiring all faculty to use Blackboard in their courses this fall, but did you know you can use Blackboard “on-thego” with your mobile device? You can view student Discussion Board entries, post announcements, videos, documents and more using the Blackboard App. Simply visit Google Play (Android) or the (Apple) App Store for details.

Weebly: If you would you like to build a unique and eye catching personal website, consider Weebly! If you are comfortable using technology or are technologically challenged, you’ll love using Weebly! Weebly can even be used in the classroom as a tool to teach your students how to effectively develop/share community resources, create electronic portfolios/resumes and much more while building their basic digital literacy skills. Weebly offers simple “drag and drop” functions to build content. To learn more about Weebly, http:// www.weebly.com/about/#

Google Hangout: Do you wish you could engage (speak and see) more than one person at a time on your cell phone, desktop, laptop or tablet device? Try Google Hangout! Google Hangout is FREE and allows you to actively engage up-to 10 different people at one time (it’s like meeting with the “Brady Bunch” on your device). With Google Hangout you can share your screen with others, watch YouTube videos together and more. To learn about Google Hangout, visit: http://youtu.be/hM3dGaRq9D8

Blurb: If you have ever dreamed of writing, publishing and/or distributing your own book, consider using “Blurb”. Blurb is an online tool that allows you to create and manage your own book project from start to finish, including designing the jacket, internal content, format and quantity ordered (digital and/or print). Consider creating a book to share as a gift or an educational tool. To learn more about Blurb, visit: http://www.blurb.com/

Focus for this week: Week #4:

Empower your students Many of you use electronic grade books and students have access to them 24/7. I have observed that, unless you frequently direct your students to review their grades, they will typically rely on you to keep them updated.

Early Dismissals It has come to the attention of the Academic Office that some classes are being dismissed early. Students are paying for an entire class session; accreditation bodies require that class hours are met. Please do not dismiss classes early. Baker College is on a quarter system which means we only have ten weeks to meet our Student Learning Outcomes. If you need assistance planning learnercentered lessons so that students help construct their own learning, please contact me or Dr. David Hultgren, Instructional Effectiveness Specialist. Dr. Hultgren can be reached by email at: david.hultgren@baker.edu

Career Relevance This is a great time to share with your students how they will be able to apply the skills and knowledge learned in your classroom to their future careers. Students need to know that what they are learning now is important, useful, and relevant! Helping students make this connection is what makes Baker College unique! We often hear the skills taught in our classes help students prepare for their LIVES as well as their careers, so please share examples and your own experiences with students to help them make the connections!

Faculty Password Expiration Process When you receive the email prompt to change your password, be sure to do so immediately to keep it from EXPIRING. Allowing your password to expire will result in additional action to reinstate it. If your password expires, within one month you are asked to call the IT Solutions Center (800-6458350) to request reinstatement of your password. You will not be able to access your email (or any password protected areas) until it is reinstated. If more than one month has passed since your password expired, you are asked to contact me, as your Dean. I will then send a request to the IT Solutions Center to request reinstatement of your account. The reinstatement process could take up-to 48 hours and you will not be able to access your email (or any password protected areas) until it is reinstated.
