Dolce Vita ~ Trendy, Good Quality, Affordable The Sweet Life Indeed By Diego Phillips Who says babies and young children can’t look chic? Dolce Vita Children’s Boutique in New Hartford Shopping Center aims to dispel that notion. Owner CaSandra Packard of Rome says her 3-year-old daughter, Elasandra, is the inspiration for the items she carefully selects to bring into her store. “Our boutique name means ‘The Sweet Life’ in Italian, and our idea is that children and the way they dress are what make life sweet,” CaSandra says. With an eye for fashion, the owner says she always had the goal opening a children’s clothing store, which is now past its second year in business. “After my daughter was born, I noticed a void for the type of items I was searching for for her,” CaSandra says. “Fun, stylish, unique and affordable children’s clothing.”

Sunnycrest Orchards A Long Standing Family Owned Business By Diego Phillips

are used for many purposes, from culinary to health tonics,” Laurie says.“We will be opening an online store in March to market the vinegars to a larger audience.”

Customers with a hankering for local artisanal vinegar need go no further than Sunnycrest Orchards, located at 7869 State Route 10 in Sharon Springs. The farm is just a few miles north of the village, intersecting with East/West State Route 20. The original farmstead was settled in the 1800s by the Kling family, who used the property to raise fruit and vegetables, as it still does today.Through the years, the farm passed on to a series of stewards. In 2013 Laurie Schilde Schmitt and Timothy Schilde purchased the family farm from their parents, Milton and Carol Schilde, who bought the property in 1975 as mainly an apple orchard with a free-standing cider mill and seasonal roadside stand. In 2014 the siblings re-purposed an old ice creamfast food business into a cider mill and cidery, and

Laurie says that one popular best-seller is Fire Apple cider vinegar, which is a robust blend of herbs, horseradish, jalapeno pepper and honey. Laurie says the ingredients used in the vinegar production are all local. The herbs are grown on the farm and the berries are grown nearby as well. This new product is marketed under the trademarked label of Sharon Springs Farm Girl artisanal vinegars. “These all natural products

Spring and summer are the growing season for the multitude of crops sold at the farm, including popular Heirloom tomatoes and apples, peaches trucked

Fall season brings many special events, including a well-known Garlic Festival and craft shows in November that have become a family tradition. The farm market anchors the year-long gift shop and a garden center that is open 10 months a year, seven greenhouses and the cidery.

The gift shop offers house wares, candles, and framed art—in short, everything from the practical to the whimsical. Laurie sums up the future for Sunnycrest Orchards: “Our goals are to continue to offer healthy options to our customers and their families, and to offer the friendly family service our parents started over 40 years ago.” T

Ice Hockey: The Toughest and Most Physical Sport in America By Daniel Baldwin

By Pat Malin Hey sports fans, old man winter is settling in.

Many sport fanatics believe that indoor and outdoor games are the toughest and most weight losing sports throughout the country.

Does that mean you’re plopped on the couch, lazily watching the NFL playoffs or highlights of Yankees’ captain Derek Jeter’s farewell season on TV?

“Basketball is a good weight losing sport,” New York City native Jason Rodriguez said. “You’re running up and down the court non-stop for a long period of time. Football, on the other hand, is more of a strength building sport.”

If you’re a hearty Mohawk Valley resident, you’re out skiing or snowmobiling, maybe jogging and eyeing the long countdown to the 2015 Boilermaker. Perhaps you’re standing in line, trying to snare a ticket to a sold-out Utica Comets hockey game?

But that is not the case from a statistical standpoint. According to Livestrong. com, players are more likely XS WXE] ½X ERH PSWI [IMKLX when they play a sixty-minute period of ice hockey When a 185-pound person plays one hour of hockey, he or she burns 710 calories, according to the Harvard Health Publication. That is greater than basketball (700 calories per hour) and football (594 calories per hour). During a professional or minor hockey game, players have to constantly skate up and down the ice. They also have to use their upper body to pass the puck, to other players, and shoot it into the net. This sport requires a lot of energy and concentration. A majority of players also get slammed against the glass boards (which separates the ice from the fans). “They’re (hockey players) constantly moving around and everything instead of stopping a few minutes,” Westmoreland resident Ryan Dunning said. “They’re constantly skating at a fast pace, picking up speed, and slowing down. There is a lot of high intensity stuff.” Eddie Olczyk is the assistant men’s hockey coach for the Utica College Pioneers. Before coming to Utica, Olczyk played for the Bloomington Thunder of the Southern Professional Hockey League. He also played varsity hockey at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Olczyk said hockey is HI½RMXIP] XSYKLIV ERH JEWXIV

than football or basketball. “Hockey skating isn’t easy,” Olczyk said. “It is different than riding a bike and there are no out of bounds. In football, they’re a lot of penalties and breaks. But there are not a lot of breaks in hockey. This sport is fast.” Shooting the puck and skating are not the only elements that a player needs, in order to achieve in this sport. It is also important, for hockey players, to eat a light meal before every game. Olczyk said the Utica College hockey players have a TVIKEQI QIEP ½ZI LSYVW before a game. The players stuff up on pasta, chicken, fruits, and vegetables. According to the Peak Performance website, food is basically the fuel towards giving hockey players’ the speed and agility they need on the ice. If a player does not eat before a game, then he or she will not have enough energy to play a sixty-minute hockey game. He or she would be tired and not have the ability to skate fast. “It’s important for our players to eat before every game so that they can have the energy to skate and play well during a game,” he said. “We tell our players to eat fruits and vegetables before every game and draw away from junk food.”

Time is another reason why hockey players burn more calories than football or basketball players. Each team, both minor and major, plays a total of 60-to-80 games during the regular season. Football players, on the other hand, play 12 to sixteen games during the regular season. The players also take the time to practice before each game, and there is also postseason. During the hockey season, Olczyk and the rest of the Utica College hockey team spend one-to-two hours, each day, practicing on the ice. Although the amount of practice hours increase near the end of the season. “We have two hockey games on every weekend,” Olczyk said, “so we have four days of practice before every game. But once [I KIX XS XLI ½REP [IIOW of the regular season, we increase our practice time in order to make a push towards the playoffs.”

is expected to draw about 10,000 people throughout the weekend. Registration opens online on Nov. 1 and often within two weeks, the open division has reached its limit of 40 teams. Each team pays a $600 fee and is guaranteed to play three preliminary games. The opening rounds are played on Friday, with the medal round scheduled to start about mid-day on Saturday. The championship game will be played under the lights on Saturday. The winning team earns the coveted wooden bear trophy.

There’s another major sporting event in the area that truly stands out like a cold nose on a moose in Old Forge. It’s the annual Adirondack Ice Bowl pond hockey tournament on Fourth Lake in Inlet, which will be held Jan. 23-25.

In 2012, O’Brien and the AIB board created a master’s division for players SZIV EKI ERH XLEX ½IPH MW RIEVP] ½PPIH F] XLI WXEVX SJ the new year. There is also a women’s division. A youth hockey skate is held on Saturday afternoon prior to the tournament’s medal round.

This event turns back the clock and “gives adults the opportunity to feel like kids again,” its Facebook page proclaims. With four authentic ice ponds serving as rinks, XLI -GI &S[P VI¾IGXW LSGOey’s true roots and attracts amateur hockey teams from throughout North America.

All Ice Bowl games are played in a four-on-four, no-goalie format. Games consist of two 15-minute halves with a 5-minute intermission.

“We’ve got a team from Mexico,” said Charles Frey, owner-operator of Woods Inn Resort in Inlet, the host for the Adirondack Ice Bowl (AIB). Jim O’Brien IV and his friends created AIB in 2009. Thanks to social media, the XSYVREQIRX ½IPH LEW KVS[R larger and more popular every year. The tournament

Teams can carry up to six players and only one substitution is allowed per team, so any injuries can be costly. Players can only play on one team. “Although there aren’t any goalies, goals are no easy dump-in,” the tournament website explains.“The AIB’s custom pond hockey (format) make(s) players work for each goal.” The goal posts are just four feet wide and six inches high, with one-foot wide

openings at each end. In lieu of a goalie, there are the two-feet wide shot blockers that serve as advertising billboards. Even in the coldest weather, the ice surface deteriorates with use, so the AIB uses two vintage Zambonis to resurface the ice.“We go to great lengths to provide the best playing surface at our tournament,” AIB adds. Shootouts between games also give spectators an opportunity to compete for free merchandise and other prizes. Despite the weather, the setup at the Wood’s Inn has turned the event into a popular tailgate party atmosphere. Two shuttle buses transport fans and players between Inlet and Old Forge, stopping at local establishments and hotels. Fans can warm up with refreshments from the AIB Shanty or belly-up to the ice bar. Games can also be viewed from the comfort of The Woods Inn’s dining room and via webcams. The heated party tent has beer and food specials, in addition to hosting live bands on Friday and Saturday night. Frey, who became the owner of Wood’s Inn with his wife Nancy last July, has built a permanent pavilion above the ponds, which is also wrapped in sheeting and provides comfort for fans. Admisison is free. This year’s major sponsors include Hamilton Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and F.X. Matt (Saranac) Brewing Co. T

Boulevard Trailers, Inc.

Football, basketball, and hockey have a big difference in the weight burning statistics. But that is not the case when it comes to preparation. “The training for football and basketball is pretty much similar to hockey,” Olczyk said. “The players in all of these sports do as much as they can to make sure they’re ready.” T

How to reduce your injury risk when exercising Exercise enthusiasts look to avoid injury like the plague. Injuries are akin to kryptonite for athletes, who tend to be averse to inactivity and unaccustomed to life away from the gym. But injuries are a legitimate threat to athletes of all ages. One of the easiest ways to suffer an injury while exercising is to dive into vigorous exercise without first preparing your body. · Recognize your limitations.Whether you are beginning a new workout regimen or already have an established routine, you still need to recognize your limitations. If you’re just starting out, don’t push yourself, as your body will need time to adjust to regular exercise. If you already have a set routine, it’s also important that you recognize any limitations you might have. shorten during a weightlifting regimen thanks to the repeated contractions they undergo as the body does repetition after repetition. Stretching helps the body return to a more natural position, reducing the likelihood that you will develop tight, sore and stiff muscles.

· Stretch at the end of each workout. Soreness and stiffness should not be a regular byproduct of your workouts. While novices will almost certainly experience some soreness and stiffness at the onset of their routines, such feelings are normal because you are exercising muscles that likely have not been worked out in quite some time. But as your body becomes acclimated to routine exercise, that soreness and stiffness should go away. If it does not, that’s likely because you are not stretching enough at the end of your workouts. Muscles

· Take time off. Even the most accomplished athletes in the world take days off from their exercise regimens.Tired, overworked muscles are more susceptible to injury, so make sure your body has enough time to rest and recover. Skip a workout if your muscles seem stiff and sore, or change up your routine so you aren’t taxing the muscles that don’t feel up to snuff. The risk of injury is always present for exercise enthusiasts. But there are several ways to greatly reduce that risk. T

Some side effects of obesity may surprise you

Being overweight or obese can contribute to a host of potentially debilitating ailments. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 40 percent of the United States population is now considered obese, while an additional 34 percent are considered overweight. In Canada, 25 percent SJ XLI TSTYPEXMSR MW GPEWWM½IH as obese and 41 percent are SZIV[IMKLX 8LIWI ½KYVIW illustrate a potentially grave future for Canadians and Americans alike, as the consequences of being overweight or obese include diabetes, heart disease and even death. Cancer The National Cancer Institute says each year thousands of new cases of cancer in men and women can be linked to obesity. Some researchers feel that excess fat cells increase hormonal activity, which can lead to tumor growth. High blood pressure Overweight or obese people have a greater chance of developing high blood pressure. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries while the heart pumps blood. High blood pressure can weaken the heart over time, causing it to work less IJ½GMIRXP] ERH QE] PIEH XS aneurysm, heart failure or stroke. Infertility As with cancer, the potential correlation between obesity and infertility requires further study. But there is some evidence that points to obesity as a contributing factor to infertility. Overweight women tend to have a harder time getting pregnant, and some researchers feel that is because fatty tissue may

cause hormonal changes that impact conception. Type 2 diabetes When a person has type 2 diabetes, his or her body cannot use insulin properly. Over time, the body cannot make enough insulin to regulate blood sugar level. About 80 to 90 percent of people who are obese also have type 2 diabetes, and it’s believed that being overweight places extra stress on the body’s ability to maintain proper glucose levels in the blood, creating a greater need for insulin. This can create a vicious cycle, as insulin use itself can lead to weight gain. Osteoarthritis Overweight individuals frequently develop pain in the joints of their knees, hips and lower backs. The condition occurs as tissue that protects the joints wears away. Extra weight also can wreak havoc on the feet that are forced to bear those extra pounds. Premature birth A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that overweight women are at a greater risk of having a preterm delivery.Too much fat can weaken uterine and cervical membranes. Trouble sleeping Obese and overweight people can have problems sleeping, says the American Sleep Foundation. Obesity can be linked to sleep apnea, a condition in which a person gasps for air or momentarily stops breathing while asleep. This condition can result in frequent interruptions in sleep and an overall poor quality of sleep. T

Yoga and Wellness by Al Dorantes Marchell Scarano s Yoga and Wellness yoga studio is located at 27 West Main Street, Little falls, NY. Yoga and Wellness opened its doors on August 18, 2014 and Marchell explained that the space, Called to me and built itself. From the floor to the walls. Since August Marchell has introduced more people who want to learn about yoga. She added, The thing that interests me is that people are willing; willing to try. Marchell has been teaching yoga for over 30 years. She taught aerobics 70-90 s and brought step aerobics to little

falls when she worked with Little Falls Y. Marchell even trained with legendary Jack Lalane in 1971 and is a certified yoga instructor, certified massage therapist, and certified Tahai yoga massage therapist. Marchell explained that there are 3 parts to her yoga classes regardless of the experience level. The classes start off with PranaYama . Prana means life force and Yama means breathing. Prana Yana is the beneficial movement of breath. After the breathing session Marchell moves on to the second phase of the class; Asana. Asana is the yoga postures. Marchell finishes the class with Savasana which is meditative guided relaxation meant to relax and restore the body mind and spirit. Marchell said, this is when we go on a journey. Yoga and Wellness s yoga classes are mostly women but, some men (approximately 10% and growing) attend. The yoga classes are low impact with positive strengthening of muscle and bone. Yoga releases stress via breathing. Yoga and Wellness has all the mats, blocks, bolsters & straps required for beginners to more experienced practitioners. Marchell is registered with Yoga for Vets and veterans will get their first 4 classes free, That s my commitment to veterans. Yoga and Wellness offers different levels of yoga classes from beginner to experienced. Besides Marchell s yoga classes the studio offers tai chi taught by Fred Chico Urich and belly dancing by Hanahdi Layali

Marchell explained that Yoga and Wellness is a nonjudgmental studio. She said, This studio is not just for perfect yoga bodies. It s for everybody. My idea was that flexible people will always practice yoga or exercise. I want to bring others to yoga. Open your mind to yoga. Stop into Marchell s Yoga and Wellness yoga studio and start your yoga journey. T

Foods that pack a nutritious punch A healthy diet is essential to long-term health. When coupled with routine exercise, healthy diets can be an effective way for men and women to reduce their risk of contracting a variety of diseases, not to mention the positive impact that such a healthy lifestyle can have on an individual s quality of life. The following are a handful of easily found foods that pack a nutritious punch. ¥ Whole wheat and multigrain pasta: Once difficult to find, these low-calorie alternatives to traditional pastas are now available in many large chain grocery stores as well as organic marketplaces. That s good news, as a typical two-ounce serving of whole wheat or multigrain pasta typically includes about seven grams of protein and six grams of fiber. ¥ Nonfat Greek yogurt: Nonfat Greek yogurt is a great low-calorie source of protein, making it a great snack option for men and women who want a snack that can boost their afternoon energy levels without compromising their waistlines. Single serving containers of Greek yogurt tend to be right around six ounces, and that six ounces can include 120 grams of protein or more. ¥ Russet potatoes: If baked potatoes are a side dish you typically only enjoy in restaurants, you might want to consider eating more of them at home. One medi-

um-sized Russet potato is roughly 170 calories and includes three grams of fiber, five grams of protein and 25 percent of your daily recommended dosage of potassium. Russet potatoes also are high in vitamin C and iron. ¥ Fresh spinach: Popeye was on to something, as a four cup serving of fresh bagged spinach is just 20 calories and loaded with vitamins and nutrients. Just one serving of fresh bagged spinach can provide 160 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin A and 40 percent of the daily value of vitamin C. Spinach is also a great source of folic acid, which can help prevent heart disease, stroke and certain types of cancer. ¥ Dried lentils: Dried lentils make great additions to salads, soups and stews and pack a nutritious punch despite their relatively small serving size. A single serving of dried lentils is 1 4 cup, and that serving includes 10 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber. ¥ Brown rice: A single 1 4 cup serving of brown rice has roughly 20 less calories than a similar serving of traditional white rice, and brown rice is also a much greater source of dietary fiber (1.8 grams) than white rice (0.4 grams). Brown rice also is rich in selenium, which can reduce a person s risk of developing arthritis, certain cancers and heart disease. T

What would your mother say? - Broken New Year’s Resolutions By S.D. Shapiro In the fast paced 21st century we ve traded common sense for the ability to quickly look up information on the internet. We ve forgotten our manners and civility. How do we get back to our roots? Can we get back? Food for thought . . . By now, all your new year s resolutions have been broken. You have not stopped smoking. Your weight remains the same and the exercise you were going to start on the first of the year is still in a box somewhere. And forget about saving money. Humans are creatures of habit and those habits are hard to break. It is so hard to stop smoking because it is not simply a conscious decision. You are fighting a chemical reac-

tion. When nicotine makes its way into the brain it activates the part of your brain that produces feelings of pleasure and reward. Nicotine raises the levels of a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Dopamine, sometimes called the pleasure molecule, is the same neurotransmitter that is involved in addictions to other drugs such as cocaine and heroin. That is just one of the chemical reactions that you will be fighting if you put quit smoking on your new year s resolution list. Saving money or saving more of it is always a big resolution theme. The problem is; everything costs more. Inflation keeps going up but wages keep going backward. And most of us have to deal with the bills that have stacked up preparing for the joyous holiday season. If you are lucky you will save some quarters in a bottle.

Losing weight is another losing battle. More than one third of adult Americans are obese. We eat too much, portions are too big. Just like holiday credit card bills the holiday eating usually leaves a little reminder around our waistlines. What do you do to fight back? There are only 2 ways to really lose weight; diet and exercise. Unless you are already physically fit or your name is Arnold you tend to avoid gyms. The weather in January in Upstate New York is less than conducive for outdoor exercise. How do you exercise? The one resolution we should all try to make is to be less of a jerk to our fellow humans. It is harder than it sounds but if we can offer up just a little extra civility everybody’s day will be a little better. Let’s go back to, if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything, and let’s start using the golden rule; do unto others as you want them to do unto you. When it comes down to making a new year’s resolution just say no. Just try to be a nicer person and see how that does for you. Stop and think, What would my mother say? She would say, Resolutions are hogwash. But, you should stop smoking and lose a little weight while you’re at it. T

your mood may influence the flavor you crave.Tak-

ing a more mindful approach will let you savor what you eat and give you a more satisfying snack experience. Mindful eating is all about being more aware of what foods you choose — such as the connection to your senses and emotions. Hone in on your senses of taste and touch with these ideas so you can sit down and savor your next snacking session: Sweet Enjoy the natural sweetness of fruit with a parfait by layering your favorite fruits with plain or vanilla

yogurt and topping with a handful of granola. Top a slice of banana bread with a smear of rich, creamy spreadable cheese, such as The Laughing Cow Creamy Swiss, and add a crunchy protein punch with walnuts. Salty Slice a potato in paperthin pieces and bake in a single layer at 400¡F for about 15 minutes, flipping half-way. Sprinkle with a dash of sea salt before serving either alone or with dip. Jazz up plain popcorn with an assortment of lightly salted nuts and dried fruit. Crunchy Dip pretzel sticks in a light coating of melted chocolate (roll in crushed nuts while chocolate is still wet for extra crunch). For a fresh take on traditional veggies, top mini bagels with a creamy sun-

dried tomato and basil spread, such as the Creamy Mozzarella, SunDried Tomato & Basil Flavor by The Laughing Cow, and add your favorite veggies (cherry tomatoes, roasted red pepper, mushrooms, etc.) for a delicious white pizza. Creamy Treat your taste buds with a richly flavored cheese spread, such as those available from The

Laughing Cow, smeared over a thinly sliced baguette or multi-grain muffin. Can beer boost brain power? There is newfound reason to indulge in a pint or two of your favorite beer, and it s not just to catch up and share a few laughs with friends. New research has shown that a chemical compound in beer may be able to im-

flavonoids, such as those found in red wine, blueberries and dark chocolate, may play a role in helping a person form memories. The mice were given very high doses of the flavonoid. A person would have to drink roughly 2,000 liters of beer a day to equal what the mice consumed to show improvement. However, should a supplement hit the market down the road, it may just be possible for men and women to consume a potentially beneficial amount of xanthohumol without bellying up at the bar. One of the goals of the xanthohumol study was to examine its potential efficacy at treating age-related deficits in memory. Xanthohumol also may benefit those with metabolic syndrome, a condition associated with obesity and high blood pressure, as it can speed metabolism and reduce fatty acids in the liver.

Dental Sedation is it for you?

By Malissa Allen To the dentist you go

Ah, the joy of going to the dentist. It’s that time again to go climb in that chair and let the dentist drill and dig around in your mouth like Bob the builder. Sure they give you shots in the mouth that numb the area being worked on, but those aren’t exactly pain free.

The doctor of the future will give no medicines, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the causes and prevention of disease. ~Thomas Edison

Many people experience severe anxiety just at the thought of going to the dentist before they even get there. For these people is GER FI E LSVVM½G I\TIVMIRGI More and more dentist offers their patients different options of what is known as sedation dentistry. These procedures can range from simple numbing to being unconscious. All dentists offer some means of comfort, depending on your dentist as to what option they use. When making your appointment it is crucial that you let your dentist know if you have any anxiety or fear of the procedure you are having. Not telling them could lead to you having an unpleasant experience. Some people have been known to experience medical emergencies.

gives the medication time for the patient to be sedated upon arrival, assisting with anxiety. Options for sedation dentistry • Novocain-Otherwise known as Procaine Novocain is an anesthetic that is used to numb a local area before surgery or a dental procedure. It’s effectiveness stems from causing numbness, or loss of feeling of the mucous membranes and skin. Novocain is giving by injection prior and during surgery or the dental procedure to ensure the patient feels no pain.

Dentists that offer sedation dentistry use different methods. You may be offered medications or nitrous oxide, otherwise known as “laughing gas”. For those with a fear of dentist the dentist will usually administered anxiety medications that make the patient sleepy. What you need to know about Ebola Ebola has been ravaging residents of West Africa for quite some time, but the virus hit closer to home when the disease touched down in North America in September of 2014.The presence of the Ebola virus in the United States sparked immediate panic, but many concerns surrounding this potentially deadly virus are unfounded. What is Ebola? Ebola is a rare and deadly disease caused by infection with a strain of an Ebola virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Though Ebola primarily affects humans and other primates, it also can be passed by bats and other wild animals. Ebola viruses are contained in five different varieties: Ebola virus (formerly Zaire virus), Sudan virus,Ta Forest virus, Bundibugyo virus, and Reston virus. Little is known of how the virus first passes to humans, but it could be through interaction or consump-

tion of infected wild animals. Human-to-human transmission is to blame for the epidemic in Africa. How is Ebola contracted? In humans, Ebola spreads only via direct contact with the bodily fluids of a person who has developed symptoms of the virus. Fluids that may contain the Ebola virus include saliva, blood, mucus, vomit, feces, tears, breast milk, urine, and semen. The World Health Organization says only people who are quite sick are able to spread Ebola through saliva, and more studies are necessary to determine if the virus can be transmitted through sweat. Many people are infected when they come in contact with blood, vomit and feces from infected individuals.Vomiting and diarrhea are main symptoms of the disease and prolific transmitters of the virus. It s important to note that deceased bodies remain infectious, and people handling human remains have contracted the virus from burial rituals and embalming. Even if a person has recovered from Ebola, the virus may still be able to persist in semen or breast milk of survivors for up to seven weeks. Caution is always suggested to prevent additional transmission. What are Ebola symptoms? The incubation period for Ebola is between two and 21 days. Many infected persons exhibit no symptoms during this time.Typically, the first symptoms of the virus to appear are the sudden onset of fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat, according to the WHO.Vomiting, rash, diarrhea, and symptoms of impaired kidney and liver function may eventually appear. In some cases, internal and external bleeding may occur. It can be very difficult to distinguish Ebola from other infectious diseases. Several tests are required to confirm Ebola is the culprit behind symptoms. How is Ebola treated? Many nations do not have the necessary medical care facilities and equipment to treat Ebola or contain the disease. There are currently no proven treatments

available for Ebola, nor a vaccine. However, supportive care in the way of rehydration and treatment of specific symptoms can improve a patient s chance of survival. Experimental treatments with blood products and immune therapies also are being evaluated. At press time, two Texas nurses, who contracted Ebola while treating the late Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, were recovering quite well. Process for avoiding Ebola and containing the virus Successful outbreak control relies heavily on case management, monitoring symptoms, good laboratory services, and safe burials. The CDC recommends practices of careful hygiene, including washing hands with soap and water. Avoidance of blood and body fluids is key. Anyone who has had contact with someone suffering from Ebola is at risk. The virus can enter the body through broken skin or unprotected mucus membranes in the eyes, nose or mouth, and the CDC released updated guidelines for people who might have been exposed to the Ebola virus. The new guidelines increase the level of protection by outlining different levels of exposure and outlining different public health actions that can be taken for each of those levels of exposure, said CDC Director Dr.Tom Frieden. Direct contact with infected body fluids, for instance, would be classified as high risk. Someone would be considered low risk if he or she traveled on an airplane with a person showing symptoms of Ebola. At press time, no travel restrictions to North America from West Africa had been implemented. However, travelers should expect screenings for symptoms at airports. While Ebola has a high fatality rate elsewhere in the world, health advisors want to reiterate that pneumonia and the flu are responsible for more deaths in the United States than Ebola. T
