A Word From Our Director Upcoming Classes New Exhibit: What Was — What Is by Kenneth Andersen Upcoming Special Events Summer Events in the Park Special Thanks

From the director’s desk:

Taylor Barnes Executive Director

As Mark Twain said, “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated”… actually not my death but my retirement. As reported, I planned to retire on June 30th, however, plans are just that—a thought about how things will go. The search for an executive director has been extended allowing a number of interested applicants to apply. This is an exciting time of change which will bring new energy to the work accomplished through the Arts Center. When I think of the Arts Center’s accomplishments, I know a lot of programming has been created but more important are the changes that have been created. We have changed individuals as well as the face of downtown with the renovations and the beginnings of an art park. This green space in the middle of downtown has been referred to as the art park, community gathering spot, activity center, etc. It doesn’t matter what it’s called; but how it will function. It’s going to be a public place of beauty anchoring downtown; focusing the arts as a catalyst for renovation and development which will influence how residents imagine creative possibilities for change and growth.

kenneth andersen: What Was — What Is June 26 – July 26, 2014 Andersen is a master craftsman and a professional construction manager by trade but is an accomplished photographer who has elegantly documented the passage of time in and around his ND family homestead. A patient photographer, Andersen captures the subtleties of light and shadow transforming the commonplace element or landscape into the extraordinary. His photos are a study of light, shadow, texture, form and tonality found in old farm buildings and agricultural related implements from times past that have developed their own unique texture and patina. These tell a fascinating story of agriculture and farming practices at a much earlier time and bring many questions to mind when you carefully examine the details of these remnants. In 2011, he started this project photographing with a large format view camera, of once-used agricultural objects that are just lying around in the fields and shelterbelts. To challenge himself, he placed constraints on this project and selected an area within a 3-mile radius of his registered North Dakota Centennial Farm located in western Cass County. He plans to record as many images as he can locate. It is a challenge that will take several years to complete, if it can ever be completed. “This is the type of vast landscape you drive through because there is nothing to photograph. You have stop and look down at your feet and you will find textures and form all around, too much to take in at one time.” Learn more about this exhibit: jamestownarts.com/exhibit

gallery talk He uses a large format view camera. At times the light changes or the image is not what he likes so he takes everything apart, packs it up, and comes back another day without making an exposure. Andersen says, “It is all in the light and the control of the light, whether natural or manmade. Light is Light.” He processes the film with an early 1900’s pyro staining developer, the negatives are scanned and printed digitally on a special printer that is set up for black and white printing with 7 shades of black/grey inks and no color inks. Andersen says, he doesn’t find a conflict in combining old and new technologies. With this approach he is able to combine the best of both worlds. The exhibit includes 29 black and white large-scale photographs. Lovers of nostalgia, history, art photography as well as local photographers should enjoy this exhibition.

IN THE LOBBY: Works by member artist Mary Craft On display through July 19th After working with oils, Mary discovered the freedom of acrylic paints. In her mixed media collages she uses layered colors, textures, and found objects. She also incorporates the use of stencils and digital elements. Mary often begins with a color theme and then lets the piece evolve looking for patterns and colors and how they play against each other. She says, “I enjoy experimenting with new techniques and tools and adding everyday objects in my collages. The process of discovery makes it so much fun!”
