We have just come off a highly-successful fundraising month.

February 4, was our most successful gala to date. I guess folks in Jamestown were ready to get out; “Stepping out for the Arts” was a blast. And we are beyond grateful for the support of our community!

A gala highlight for me was our young artists working with Linda Roesch on their pieces and then auctioning them off during the live auction. It highlighted two of our cornerstone programs, Arts After School & our Artist in Residence program.

I want to thank our Gala Committee for all of their hardwork this year: Mary Lou Urquhart, Jolene Sjostrom, Joleen Reiland-Lorenz, Hunter Braunberger, Taylor Barnes, Tara Steinberger, Kelsey & Shane Ost and Alyssa Falvey.

The following week we had our most successful Giving Hearts Day. The generosity of our community is incredible, again, I am beyond grateful.

As you can see in this newsletter, we have a lot going on this spring, back by popular demand is a few more Charcuterie classes. Last time we had to turn folks away, so sign up early.

One more Perfectly Paired for the season and we are busy planning for the next Downtown Arts Market season.

If spring ever comes, check out the Hansen Arts Park. Longtime supporter, Ken McDougall, is spearheading a project with Pheasants Forever. It will enhance the park experience and bring something more to downtown.

FROM HERE TO HERE

By Matthew Anderson & Michael Conlan Exhibits: March 3 – April 16, 2022 From Here to Here is a two person show in which North Dakota artists, Matthew Anderson and Michael Conlan respond to and represent Great Plains landscape.

Michael Conlan strips the idea of landscape down to its basic formal elements of shape and color.

Matthew Anderson uses an intuitive mark-making process describing the landscape he sees before him.

Michael Conlan is originally from Williston, ND. He received his BFA from Portland State University, Portland, Oregon and his MFA from the University of North Dakota, Grand Breaking the Cycle, Michael Conlan, screen print and graphite on paper Forks, North Dakota.

Matthew Anderson is originally from Gackle, ND. He received his BA from Northern State University, Aberdeen, South Dakota and his MFA from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND.

DEMARCATIONS: PAINTINGS & DRAWINGS

by Mark Zimmerman Exhibits: April 21 – June 4, 2022 Mark Zimmerman searches the open space of the high plains for inspiration, journeys into the mountains for thin air and the badlands for solace, and returns to his studio to produce abstract paintings and drawings that capture something of the feel of the western landscapes he loves.

Paintings and drawings with ink transfers of watercolor and graphite are Mark’s exuberant expression of the landscape he will be featuring in Demarcations: Above: Chalk Hills, Mark Zimmerman, acrylic Paintings and Drawings. Mark, And from the cover: Orange Sunset - Burning, Mark Zimmerman, acrylic (detail) once an executive director of The Arts Center now calls the Black Hills and Northern Great Plains home. His paintings and drawings are “his way of advocating and speaking for the stark beauties of these imperiled lands.”

At Minnesota State University (Moorhead), Mark began a serious pursuit of fine art informed by earlier diverse interests. Graduating with a BFA in printmaking, Mark continued his education at Illinois State University, earning an MS in printmaking and an MFA in painting.

By chance, rather than by choice—as life often unfolds—Mark returned (fortuitously) to North Dakota, eventually taking a position at a combined art gallery / performing arts space. Unaccountably, it was there that he met another artist, Mary Wipf. Today, married, they live and work in the Black Hills of South Dakota, a much-beloved environment that enriches and informs their lives together and lives as artists.

Admission to The Arts Center gallery is free and open to all. Gallery hours are: Monday – Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturdays from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

SPRAY PAINTING with Linda & Dustin Saturday, May 21 starting at 5:00 pm $75 / $60 for Arts Center Members Learn how to create fantastical art using spray paint! Students will make their own outer space scene or earthly landscape, using common spray paint techniques that can translate to other designs. Then, use Posca paint pens or oil pastels to add additional details and line work to your spray painted masterpiece. Beginners to advanced artists are welcome! We will be working outside, so dress accordingly.

3D CREATIONS with Bill Nybo

February 28 – March 11 No School 9 – 11 Create 3D sculptures of your choice using clay and other found objects. Learn and work on the art of hand building with clay artist Bill Nybo. Space is limited.

ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE with Linda Roesch

March 14 – 18 Students will learn how to draw more realistic landscapes by using one point perspective.

Students will learn about vanishing points, horizon lines, and spatial depth while drawing various landscapes and city scenes.

THE WORLD OF JIMMIE WONKA with UJ

March 21 – April 1 We are excited to partner with the University of Jamestown in creating Willy Wonka’s factory for “Jimmie Wonka” their Dine and Bid Event held April 23. We will create Wonka’s factory, his wild and crazy candy world with the UJ crew. Our creations will be part of Jimmie Wonka.

EARTHSHIPS & GAUDI HOUSES with Linda Roesch

April 4 – 8 Students will learn about the artist Antoni Gaudi and will construct their own Gaudi inspired miniature buildings after viewing Gaudi’s architecture. Students will also learn about completely self-sustainable homes known as “earthships” that are constructed from recycled materials such as bottles and tires, and see how these modern structures often have a Gaudi-esque flair.

SEWING FOR STARTERS with Lindsay Ostlie

April 11 – 22 No School 15 &18 In this class we will create a series of fun, useful projects that will introduce students to the art of sewing. Each project will progress in difficulty, giving students the opportunity to practice the skills they learned while introducing new techniques. Both hand and machine sewing will be covered. Space is limited. ***NOTE: If you sign up for this class you can’t sign up for Bill Nybo’s class on April 11-22. They are taking place at the same time and date.

ARTS AFTER SCHOOL CONTINUED

CLAY, CLAY, CLAY with Bill Nybo

April 11 – 22 No School 15 &18 Come and create with Bill Nybo in the Hansen Clay Studio. Learn and work on your handbuilding techniques, pinch and coil pots. Space is limited. ***NOTE: If you sign up for this class you can’t sign up for Lindsay Ostlie’s class on April 11 – 22. They are taking place at the same time and date.

GRIFFINS, FAERIES, DRAGONS, ELVES, GOBLINS AND MANY MORE with Mr. Billy

April 25 - May 6 This class will feature the fundamentals of drawings and painting, by exploring fantastical creatures from folklore, stories, and legends. Students may even create a few fantasy creatures of their own invention. The class will involve uncovering stories and understanding through art, with a focus on small details, texture, colors and composition.

Each day students will begin a new fantasy creature drawing (as voted on by the popular vote) and will be created step by step together with options for unique customization or modifications. The painting stage of each drawing will teach a new technique or style to try, which will accumulate a wide range of skill in mixing colors, using different sized brushes, understanding layering and blending and stippling. If the star align, each student will walk away from class with a stack of impressive creatures, and a story to go with each one.

NOTAN with Dina Laskowski

May 9 – 13 Notan is a Japanese term which literally means “light dark harmony”. Artists use “notan studies” to explore different arrangements of light and dark elements in a painting, without having the distraction of other elements like color, texture and finer details. Spend the week with Dina learning how to use the balance and positive/negative space in your papercutting creation. Space is limited. ***NOTE: If you sign up for this class you can’t sign up for Printmaking on May 9 – 13. They are taking place at the same time and date.

PRINTMAKING with Anna Jacobson

May 9 – 13 Learn the basics about relief printmaking. How to create an image in black & white, how to carve your block and to print it using a printing press. Space is limited. ***NOTE: If you sign up for this class you can’t sign up for Notan with Dina Laskowski on May 9-13. They are taking place at the same time and date.

FIRST STEPS INTO ANIMATION with Sam Larson

May 16 – 27 An introduction to the world of Animation. Students will learn about some of the core principles that help bring animated characters to life.

JAMESTOWN OPTIMIST CLUB

Our Arts After School program is supported in part by AAUW, United Way, Hugo’s Marketplace, Walmart, Optimist Club and BNSF Railway.

New - Writers Club 2nd Monday of the Month from 6:30 – 8:00 pm This group welcomes all writers or those just looking to explore writing. Share what you’re writing with some fresh ears.

Critique and help one another along in the process. Get helpful tips from some of the more experienced in the group and move your own project along.

Open Mic Night

March 31, April 28 & May 26 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm Poets, writers, musicians, comedians, solos, duos, and any and all performers are welcome to share your talent with the community at our monthly open mic night. There will be a sign up sheet at the door. Please limit your piece to 10 minutes.

A P.A. system, bass amp, guitar amp and music stands will be provided and facilitated by local musician Steve Kuykendall.

Woodcarvers Group Thursdays at 6:00 in the Hansen Studio Stop by and whittle away! The local Woodchippers club meets Thursday nights at 6:00 pm. All skill levels are welcome to join in. If you are just starting out, this group is always willing to share and advise for your development and success working with wood. It is free to attend, no reservations are necessary.

Buffalo City Photo Club Third Tuesday of each Month in the Hansen Studio The local band of photo enthusiasts will be meeting again.

You can join them the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Hansen Arts Studio for a photography adventure. Topics are focused primarily for DSLR camera users. Free and open to anyone.

Dakota Spotlight: The House on Sweet and Seventh Thursday, April 7th at 7:00 pm at The Arts Center Dakota Spotlight: The House on Sweet and Seventh, is an Emmy Award-winning documentary examining an unthinkable 1998 crime in North Dakota. The hour-long film documents the heartbreaking murders of Barbara and Gordon Erickstad, who were brutally killed in their home by their son, 18-year-old Brian Erickstad, and his friend, 27-year-old Robert Lawrence in September 1998. The documentary was produced by Click Content Studios, which is part of Forum Communications.

The House on Sweet and Seventh was written and narrated

by James Wolner, producer of Dakota Spotlight Podcast, and was shot and edited by Derek Fletcher. The film includes insightful current-day interviews with law enforcement investigators as Wolner attempts to untangle and understand how a tight-knit group of young people knew about the murders but did not immediately come forward to the police.

In the film, one investigator describes the crime as “Manson-esqe,” a reference to Charles Manson and the infamous ‘Mason Family’ responsible for nine murders in 1969.
