This newsletter I am going to take a point of personal Atprivilege.thebottom of this page there is a picture of a wonderful Arts Center patron, Mary Smith. Almost every Thursday night at the Downtown Arts Market, you could watch Mary dance in the park. Mary loved music, loved art, loved people and most importantly she loved life and made a difference. If you had the privilege of knowing Mary you are a better person, I know I am. Last week I was able to share her celebration of life and send off with my daughter. What a gift as I send Madison off to her freshman year of college. Mary was a true inspiration and I can only hope Madison will live life like Mary and make an impact on this world as a tribute to our friend. Godspeed my friend and Go Get Em Madison. “May your sail always be unfurled.”

This is why I choose to, and am proud to, work at The Arts Center. We provide a space—a safe, inspirational and creative space—for all to enjoy and explore. The Arts Center is happy to serve the community, and we (obviously) cannot thank every person that has made this space what it is. Just know that you are greatly appreciated... you know who you are.

Sincerely,

Special thanks to Richard Ovind, Beth and Roger Dewald, Ted Cowardin and Jodi Larson for their special gifts in honorable memory of Mary Smith.

THE ARTS CENTER THANKS THESE ORGANIZATIONS for their generous support of The Arts Center and the Downtown Arts Market. Please thank them for helping bring these amazing events to our community.

“Where did the last year go?! It has been a year of change for the Arts Center, the arts community and me. Last October the Arts Center hired me to be the Director of Education and Exhibitions. My very first task in my new position was to take down the 57th Annual Show, Sally Jeppson’s last curated show at the Center. Now I am getting ready to install the 58th Annual show. I am excited and nervous. The anticipation of unwrapping the art work, the excitement of creating the story this work will tell and displaying everyone’s hard work creates an energy that feels like Christmas. I remember that same feeling of excitement and nervousness as a kid seeing the presents, smelling the food, and waiting for the family to arrive at Grandma’s house. I am feeling those very emotions as entry forms and artwork arrive bearing the names of old friends and new ones. We are excited to feature artists from around the state in varied mediums including painting, drawing, mixed media, fiber, and Thissculpture.yearThe Arts Center is honored to display one of Don Paul’s last finished pieces. Don Paul’s death, May 6, 2022, was a great loss to his family and the arts community. I once received a little manilla envelope in the mail addressed with Don’s handwriting. Inside were a collection of colorful copper test plates along with Don’s copious notes on technique. A few months prior, Don and I had discussed my current work on copper and how I might get different colors. This was not just a one off, Don’s unselfish help was freely given to many fellow artists. Don’s spirit lives on in of his example of generosity as well as in his sculpture, and in his jewelry. Please come see Don’s sculpture and the many other talented artists’ work at the 58th JFAA Annual Show, The opening will be September 15 at 5:30 pm. Refreshments will be provided. “ by Anna Jacobson

Fine art printmaking involves the creation of a master plate from which multiple images are made. There are four main types of printmaking. The process and materials of these techniques influence the appearance of the final print. We will be learning about three of the four processes: Relief, Intaglio and screen printing.

In this class we will create a series of fun, useful projects that will introduce students to the art of sewing. Each project will progress in difficulty, giving students the opportunity to practice the skills they learned while introducing new techniques. Both hand and machine sewing will be covered.
