ethos The enduring relevance of architecture lies in its distinctive capacity to recognize and respond to the prevailing conditions with which it engages while maintaining a delicate and grounded balance between saying and doing. My praxis is profoundly dedicated to cultivating spatial environments that exalt the diverse lived experiences of the individual while remaining grounded in the communal act of making. The cornerstone of this ethos lies at the intersection of sustainability, resilience, and identity. From this perspective, comes my ambition for integrating experience, intention, and the physical act of making to design buildings that actively regenerate the natural world and enrich the human experience. This approach calls for a deep ecological understanding and a commitment to design for community-based resilience. This position on sustainability invites others to view the built environment holistically, embracing ecological, economic, and social dimensions simultaneously. Equity, in architectural practice, entails not only environmental stewardship but also the promotion of local economies, the spatial distribution of resources, and the nurturing of community interconnectedness.

Resilient architecture, as I see it, must empower communities to adapt to all changes, offering spaces that can be reconfigured to serve a multiplicity of futures. By fostering a sense of ownership and social cohesion, dedicated to the prioritization of embodied experiences and community-scaled design, my designs seek to contribute to the resilience of the communities that they serve. My agency, and the civic responsibility that I feel for my community as a practitioner, will carry the conviction that architecture should always elevate the fabric of communities, both at the local and Tennessee regional levels, toward resiliency. 01 Peace and Goodwill Community Collaborative Typology: Missing Middle Housing, Community Design Location: Parkridge, Knoxville, Tennessee

The peace and goodwill community collaborative is part of a research venture between the UT Housing America studio run in partnership with Professor Tricia Stuth, FAIA, her acclaimed practice, CURB, and the city of Knoxville government. The project is inspired by the Nehemiah Project, a non-profit housing model. The intent was to explore how Churches in Knoxville can develop their vacant land into missing middle housing to meet the enormous housing demand facing Knoxville and many other sun-belt cities today. The Peace and Goodwill collaborative specifically proposes an implementation in Parkridge, a former streetcar neighborhood of Knoxville, on the unused land portions of the Park Lane Baptist Church.

The project proposes 8 rowhouses and 2 duplexes to be developed by the local church that will result in 8 below-market rate housing units, and four church-owned and rented housing units in addition to addressing issues of shade and food scarcity through a community agriculture garden and community event space. The units are developed with single-person households in mind ( a growing trend) and feature flexible plans designed to maximize their space through strategically designed flexible zones and casework that allow the dwellings to be modified, used as makeshift storefronts, home offices, guest rooms, workshops and more, in the spirit of the surrounding neighborhood kit houses. Ultimately, the project aims to create community resilience by keeping development in the community and for the community, to create housing that meets direct needs, to invite the community in, and to serve as a model for other religious institutions to develop their own land in the future.

What does prescriptive design do to create “character” in light of the existing neighborhood character? How can we do better?

After analyzing over 100 existing dwellings in the neighborhood, it is clear they do not follow any sort of prescriptive pattern, roof slope, proportion, feature, etc. The “character” described is largely an ensemble of designed anomalies.

Prescriptive design standards like those set forward in the Missing Middle Ordinance do not connect with the existing neighborhood fabrics, are not site-specific, and only restrict design and “character” we appreciate in neighborhoods like Parkridge.

The architecture of Parkridge is highly contrasting, by proposing homogenous character features, we are disbanding this fabric.

Historic forms were designed for different technology and strategies: tall, lofty attics and unoccupied forms are irrelevant today, and a waste of money - we must find new ways to form-make, informed by our appreciation for the old.

We can do better by removing prescriptive design guidelines from the Missing Middle Ordinance, and by providing more agency to designers to create sitespecific designs that engage with the neighborhood while adapting to todays needs which may have aesthetically contrasting, but still relevant forms.

There isn’t a defined, prescriptive character at play. This isn’t working for today... We can do a lot better...

The approach to Site Design reflects a desire to incorporate the neighborhood of Parkridge into the greater mission of community stewardship set forward by the Church. With this in mind, the site attempts to, beyond housing, provide three necessary community utilities: shade, gathering, and garden. These three utilities are traditionally not equitablly available to all in the community, and will be provided to further the mission of community connection. A system of wander paths are aggregated across the interior courtyard of the rowhouses along with native grass vegetation and Relocate d Park ing ample shade trees providing a community park, further amplified by the creation of a community garden and community gathering room, which can also be utilized by the Church for programmed community events.

02 Ephemerality and Locality: F i n n i s h C u l t u re H a u s S u o m e n l i n n a Typology: civic - culture house, art installation Location: Suomenlinna UNESCO World Heritage Site, Helsinki, Finland

A three-week charette during my time studying in Finland, the Finnish cultural center at Suomenlinna is a speculative project engaging the ephemeral qualities of locality, specifically related to the unique sensual qualities of the Finnish climate and culture. The project frames a culture house installation at Suomenlinna, a UNESCO world heritage site dedicated to illustrating the varying sensory experiences unique to Finland and its varied diurnal and visual conditions, from the scarcity and abundance of seasonal light, to the uniquely vivid colors of the sky due to the regions exceptionally clean air, emphasizing the value of environmentalism and care for nature. The project also represents unique appreciation for the Aurora Borealis, and the tradition of the Sauna. The project sets up three programmatic houses nestled under a protective, parametric timber “jacket” sitting atop the rocky shore on pilotis. Each house contributes a different experiential condition of Finland, the house of light, the house of color, and the monochromatic house of refuge. The space invites visitors to experience the embodied and grounding nature of Finnish culture and the variety of sensations that are highly valued in the country.

thesis: architecture can articulate enclosure to distill light and water; to filter and compress sensory perception into concentrated experiences - “a place not to step away from the world, but to see it microscopically” Architecture, akin to an ecological system, should modulate itself in a way that surveys, classifies, and filters light, water, and other environmental stimuli in a concentrated, minimal, and engaging experiential system. My research intends to engage architecture’s potential to harness modular, cellular, absorptive structures to sort, distill, and assign distinct experiential qualities from sensesaturated environments and dissipate these into curated, beautiful, and sustainable experiences. This architecture should percolate, retain, and sustain its environment to improve experiences and engage the senses in a dynamic and responsive way.

03 Resilient Regionalism: Tennessee Institute for Biosphere Sustainability Typology: Institutional - Residential Research Laboratory Location: Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park Recognition: AIA Middle Tennessee Integrations Design Award Nomination + Honorable Mention

Cades Cove, nestled within the picturesque Great Smoky Mountains National Park, has undergone a profound transformation over the years, transitioning from a thriving natural wetland pre-colonization, to a congested tourist hotspot plagued by car congestion and a pioneer pastiche of a monocultural fescue landscape. In response to this environmental degradation, the National Park Service (NPS) launched a program in 2004 to restore the Cove’s wetlands and native grasses, a process which is estimated at its current rate to take a staggering 360 years. To expedite this monumental restoration effort, advanced hydroponic farming and other cultivation techniques are employed, representing a pioneering approach to reviving the Cove’s ecosystem.

At the heart of this revitalization endeavor lies the Tennessee Institute for Biosphere Sustainability (T.I.B.S.). This monumental structure serves as a linchpin for scientific scholarship, community engagement, and ecological conservation. T.I.B.S. aims to replace the Cove’s prevailing mono-ecology with a diverse, thriving ecosystem. The T.I.B.S. campus boasts laboratories, educational facilities, residences, and more, all dedicated to preserving the natural balance that once defined Cades Cove.

The innovative design of T.I.B.S. extends beyond its architectural prowess. It also functions as a barrier and storage device for visitor automobile traffic, a critical move to mitigate the impact of cars on the pristine environment and ease pedestrian access to the site. The architectural design of T.I.B.S. , inspired by regional materials such as limestone and timber, significantly reduces its embodied carbon, and ozone depletion potential while paying homage to the critical architectural vernacular of the region.

In conjunction with its architectural significance, T.I.B.S. stands as a testament to how human intervention can work in harmony with nature to restore and conserve ecosystems. By employing advanced hydroponic techniques and a vegetative plinth, T.I.B.S. accelerates the par kv restoration of Cades Cove’s natural habitat. The Cove’s transformation isit ors from a congested tourist destination to a thriving natural wetland represents a balance between monumental infrastructural innovation and the preservation of ecological diversity built on the legacy of the T.V.A. and other New Deal projects.

Cades Cove’s history, from a flourishing wetland to a tourist magnet, now undergoes a compelling reversal, with T.I.B.S. spearheading the journey toward rewilding and conserving this remarkable natural landscape. As the years pass, the vision of Cades Cove being restored to its former glory becomes increasingly tangible, illustrating the power of innovation and dedication in the realm of ecological restoration.

One of the critical decisions in the project was the choice to create a bold stereotomic plinth to serve as a barrier and storage device for automobiles in the park. This deals with the issues of car-tourism, and protects the landscape within. The design of the plinth created selective opportunities to create sunken apertures into the landscape, and to contrast the stereotomic palette of post-tension concrete structure and gabion baskets with the landscape

04 M i n d f u l n e s s , R e t re a t , a n d D w e l l i n g : B E N T O m a s s - m a n u f a c t u re d w e e k e n d re t re a t Typology: Residential - Manufactured Modular Weekend Dwelling Location: No Specific Site - Designed for all U.S. climate zones with options / adaptations to suit

“BENTO” sparked out of a desire to revive the kinesthetics of daily life in an increasingly digitally engulfed world.

This endeavor aims to reconnect individuals with nature to enhance their mental well-being. This involves designing user-conditions that heighten awareness and require conscious input, enabling one to meet their own physical and psychological needs. The outcome is a modular, prefabricated retreat designed for all U.S. climate zones, offering rapid deployment options for both individual and community-scale use, while promoting tenants of subsistence - true sustainability.

The project’s design involved over 52 formal iterations, emphasizing applicability to passive, climate-responsive strategies and modular construction techniques. The construction combines cross-laminated timber (C.L.T.) for walls and floors with a wood-trussed double roof and structurally insulated panels (S.I.P.). The foundation adapts to varied topographies, delicately floating

above the ground on pilotis to minimize impact on the landscape. The design process which involved addressing every detail from trusses to casework, light switches to fenestration was integral to the project, with a strong emphasis on materials research to reduce embodied carbon.

The modular dwelling can be transported on a standard tractor trailer and meets highway clearance requirements. The project’s passive performance strategies, which required extensive research due to the non-site-specific nature of the project, are designed to suit all U.S. climate zones, includes cross-ventilation, double roofs, S.I.P.S, thermal mass, and strategic shading to enhance energy efficiency.

The design process involved addressing every detail from interiors specifications to structural piers and connections with the ultimate goal of offering retreat, resilience, and affordability. Today.

05 F r a m i n g C o m m u n i t y Vo i c e s : C a r s w e l l G ro v e R e m e m b r a n c e M e m o r i a l Typology: Civic + Community - Memorial and Community Space Location: Millen, Georgia

Carswell Grove is the site of a historic Black Church that experienced racial lynching during the Red Summer of 1919, in addition to two horrific arsons, with one as recent as 2014.

The goal of this project was to take the site of a former institutional community backbone, and restore its dignity by acknowledging the atrocity that was, while framing a space for the community to speak its own truth and rewrite its future. The ultimate CLT design addresses the agrarian site, frames a ghost structure around the ruins, and creates a space for the community to address its future.

My efforts included a research stage and a design charette that centered around the program of a contemplative garden, hall of remembrance, ruins site, chapel, and public speaking space. The research utilized site data, national historic registry data, and primary source accounts to understand the history of Millen, the Church, and the events. The charette consisted of developing a detailed forming logic, the creation of modular CLT structures, parametric fenestration patterns and elements, and form-fitting installations.

This undisclosed, monumental institutional project encompasses the creation of facilities for a coral reef restoration farm in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the project invites the public through various civic programs to engage with the restoration work at hand. My role in the studio included modeling various aspects of the project including gallery tunnels, hospitality amenities, retail design, facade design, underground parking infrastructure (while collaborating with ARUP), in addition to creating renderings of the project in enscape for client presentations.

This 38-story hybrid concrete/timber high rise tower rises prominent in Sydney’s new technology district and stands as a partnership between SOM (tower designer) and Fender Katsaitis (podium designer). The project consists of three commercial towers and a public amenity - the condenser, all adjacent to a new rail transit hub. The project is aiming to achieve WELL and LEED Platinum and utilizes strategies like PV facade panels, shading devices, vegetative roofs, and a hybrid timber floor system. My role included prototyping facade iterations, reducing complex facade geometries, developing presentation renderings, construction documents, diagrams, and assisting in creating a proprietary 3d model for published renderings for our rendering consultant, Norviska. I was also responsible for engaging in client and consultant meetings with ARUP and WSP, facilitating my understanding of the profession and its multi-disciplinary nature.

This flagship hospital is poised to redefine the standard of care and comfort for children throughout the greater Seattle region, and is poised to become a leader in healing. With such lofty ambitions, ESa was sought out to reimagine what’s possible for the existing site, which due to its strange shape, tough existing infrastructure, seismic challenges and rail rights of way had many existing challenges.

My role in this project was primarily centered around supporting our technical architects through detailing, coordination, and extensive Revit modeling. I was responsible for developing the majority of the many proprietary core + shell details on the project in accordance with firm standards. This included modeling and detailing fire terminations, UL assemblies, helipad clearances, shaft wall assemblies, roofing systems, and slab edge detail plans. Additionally, I worked directly with engineering and envelope consultants to keep the project on budget and on schedule, which allowed this project to make it smoothly through CD’s in a timely manner.

ESa: Tower Concept Design

04 Earl Swensson Associates: R e s i d e n t i a l To w e r C o n c e p t D e s i g n Typology: High-Rise Residential Location: Confidential - Southeast U.S.

During my co-op internship at ESa, I was given the opportunity to serve on the design charette team for a bespoke residential tower coming soon to the Southeast. As part of this process, I was chosen to develop initial concepts for the tower portion of the project, which was located in an industrial warehouse district. The project had lofty aspirations to adapt to its context and support the environment, creating an opportunity for a unique design.

From my previous experience working on tower projects at SOM, I was able to propose a hybridized tower, offering both standard and penthouse floor types, utilizing a unique superstructure, partially offset core, and reduced embodied carbon through leave-in-place CLT formwork. The project connects to an industrial district through its expressive structure and terracotta colored, metal-panel facade, all the while interpreting new opportunities.

The project reinterprets the organization of a typical high-rise, where the most valuable units land on the roof, and emphasizes the roof as a communal amenity for all residents to enjoy.

Amenities are spanned between floors to reduce travel distances, and penthouse floors are introduced on multiple “reveal” levels, providing increased unit value for the developer.

My role in this brief, two-week charette consisted of parti development, diagramming, materials research, concept modeling, renderings, and presentation design for the client.
